Meanwhile, Back Up on the Street

The drunk you passed two blocks back said the sick hospital was this way. But he was a drunk...

You stop at an intersection and wipe sweat off your brow. The heat of the day is already oppressive and it isn't even noon yet. The slight breeze is more of an insult than a relief. All it does is waft the smell of rotting fish and desperation from the piers of this section of Korvosa inland. This city...

You look around for this sick hospital. It's supposed to be the headquarters for those physicians the Queen hired on and serve as their main treatment facility. If you can locate it, it would be valuable knowledge before you make your rounds.

So why is it so hard to find?

You decide to walk down one of the streets and see what's around the next corner. The worst that will happen is you'll just get more lost. And maybe you'll get lucky. Maybe.

Just as you step into the next intersection you hear a scream. Startled you look in the direction it came from. Across the way is another warehouse, though it appears to currwntly being used for different purposes. From inside a number of people, many obviously ill with the plague, are stumbling...in some cases crawling...out the door. Several of the plague masked, trench coated Queen's Physicians are running between them. Three to be exact. At first it seems the doctors are trying to help the patients stand. But then, as you watch horrified, you realize it is just the opposite. Hey are trying to lay them down. Permanently.

One woman, her face badly scarred by the boils that come in the second stage of the plague and crawling on the ground, screams as one of the doctors comes up behind her and kicks her in the side of the head. Another doctor wields a sharp scalpel and slashes the arm of an elderly man. The third and last doctor is choking a young woman.

Ypu seem to have found the sick hospital. And it is indeed quite sick.

Chandanar stares appalled at the doctors as they attacked the diseased. His hesitation is only brief though, feeling his anger rise.
"Stop this at once!", he shouts as he closed in.

The young cleric quickly prays to Iomedae to stop the doctor from choking the young woman.

How far to reach the nearest doctor ?

You are twenty feet away from the scene. We'll say it's twenty feet roughly to each doctor. Do me a favor and give me your DC to save when you cast a spell. For you it should always be Spell level+Wis bonus+10

Doctor Chokey stiffens in mid choke. The woman falls out of his hands and starts to crawl away.

The other two Doctors look up at you. One of them makes a hand sign at the other. Four fingers held aloft with the thumb set across the palm. The other Doctor nods and turns, rushing at you.

Your move.

The Doctor ducks and then pivots, more a dancer than a fighter. But he still manages to avoid the swipes of your blade. You knock one of his counters away, but he lands one across your side as you try to recover your stance.

Behind him more patients are coming out from the sick hospital. Fortunately, the doctors seem to be more concerned with you at the moment and so ignore them.

The knife thrower tosses off his next blade. It somehow manages to get over the top of your defense and smashes ahainst your left shoulder. Fortunately it is the hilt that makes contact. You can see the edge glint in the sunlight as it whips upwards and feel a slight sting against your ear. But then the knife is clattering on the road behind you.

The doctor moves to avoid you...or tries. One of the patients is in his way. It hampers him long enough for you to slam into him. He manages to stay on his feet...

Re: Meanwhile, Back Up on the Street

Chandanar shakes his head as he wipes off the blood on his blade on the cloak of the felled man.
Despite his repeated appeals these doctors had been unwilling to talk to him. Had they gone insane ? Why ever would they kill the plague afflicted ? Surely that was no way to deal with the Blood Veil. He wonders if they had acted on command by the city authorities, some sort of deranged plan to contain the plague. Only then does he realize that said authority would be the Queen herself.
He ponders healing the least wounded doctor and bind him to be interogated later, but there were more pressing issues at hand, namely the sick who fled from the fire.

Chandanar stoops down to one of the patients.
"What has happend here ? Do you know why the Queen's doctors attacked you ? Or who set the building on fire ? Are there still people inside ?", he asks the badly scarred woman.
But there is only stark terror in her eyes and so he repeats the most immediate question.
"Are there still people inside ?"
The woman, however, is only focused on leaving and stares back numbly at him.
Muttering an expletive at the strange turning of events, Chandanar makes for the building to check out for himself. If there were still people inside they would need to be released, even if that meant risking further spreading of the disease.

Chandanar runs to the door and cautiously opens it...

Re: Meanwhile, Back Up on the Street

A few more people are scrambling out the door as you make your towards it. They are more patients and hurry past you as quickly as they can.

Inside the scene is urgent. A few patients are still inside, apparently too weak to rise form their beds. Other patients are laying on the floor, dead not from disease but from stab wounds.

A doctor is busy stabbing another woman who is laying in her bed. She is screaming, "I didn't hear! I didn't hear!" With a thrust of his knife, the doctor makes sure she will never tell.

The interior is a wide open space filled with rows of beds. You would guess it is a converted warehouse. In the back is a sealed off area, probably a storage space. The smoke is coming from there.

In the back corner of the room there is yelling. Not the cries of people in pain, but an urgent shout, "Just get all the papers for now. Seal off the entrance below. They'll be fine."

You can not see the one shouting from where you are, but the voice sounds like Davalus. The expert physician brought by the Queen to lead the effort against the plague.

The doctor who stabbed the woman has noticed you. He flips the knife in his hand upwards and makes ready to throw it.

He is about twenty feet away. Roll init and state your action please.

Chandanar's thoughts are a swirl of agitation. Why was Davalus in here and why did he not prevent the atrocities of his subjects. He must have ordered them to do exactly that, there could be no other reason. And what papers would they store in this sick house? Maybe something to prove these evil deeds? And what kind of entrance were they talking about.

The smoke pours out from doors in the back of the room. It appears a fire has been set in a back room used for storage. To one side is what appears to be a lift and staircase. The smoke may be suffocating, but it provides you a bit of cover. So you can creep fairly close.

At the bottom of the staircase if Davalus. He, two doctors, and one of those awful Grey Maidens are standing before the lift. The doctors have climbed up on the sides of the lift shaft and have a large saw slung between them. They are using it to try to saw through the cable that allows the lift to be raised and lowered.

Davalus shifts a large attache case from one hand to the other and says to the maiden, "This should trap them below. The fire will block them from climbing out. I can't believe they got as far as they did. But no matter. Once the fire is out, you can lead a unit in to finish them."

The maiden says nothing. Davalus turns back to the doctors. "Hurry. And then fall back to the fencing academy. We'll finish off all these meddlers today."

Re: Meanwhile, Back Up on the Street

I meant the COP to attack one of the sawing doctors.
Since that saw is large enough to require two men to handle and since there is the lift pit (assumed to be ~10'x10' max), I was assuming that the two doctors are standing right at the edge of the pit and that thus a drag of 5ft would spell one doctor's doom, i.e. he would fall into the pit... hopefully taking the saw with him, or at the least making it impossible to continue the sawing of the cord/cable. Perhaps he even tries to hold on to the saw and drag the second doctor into the pit, too OR keeps dangling there temporarily occupying the second doctor, too. Unless Davalus or the Grey maiden pick the other handle, of course.
Sorry for not being clear.

Re: Meanwhile, Back Up on the Street

You were clear. I was just being an idjit. I'll amend the post.  Sorry about that. However the two docs are standing on the lip of the walls, sawing away. That won't change much though as the rolls were in your favor...

Davalus is standing,,staring at the space the mising doctor was occupying. He begins to make hand signs to the other doctor, who avoided going with his partner by letting go of the saw.

Then suddenly, Davalus falls over, wrenched off his feet. He lands backwards on the floor right before the edge of the lift.

The maiden stiffens and then springs forward in your direction...

She is charging your position. Davalus is fighting the drag. Your move.

Re: Meanwhile, Back Up on the Street

Chandanar anticipates the armoured figure's charge and strikes out with his blessed blade.

The magical chain tries to hook Davalus and drag him to the same fate as the first doctor, but the hook misses.

You loose sight of the lift entrance as the maiden blocks your view. She takes the hit and then smashes into you with her blade...

Re: Meanwhile, Back Up on the Street

Chandanar grunts in pain as the grey maiden drew blood. She surely was a much better fighter than him. Still, for the first time ever since he found the warehouse, he fears he had taken abigger bite than he woild be able to swallow. He had trusted in the protection of his goddess, but it looked as if the soldieress did not bother about the protective magic.
He strikes back, but his blade glances off the metal armour.
The magical chain continued to drag Davalus to his death...

rolled 11,6 using 1d20+6,1d8+2. attack, damage.

Re: Meanwhile, Back Up on the Street

Perhaps yoi have not been abandonded. The Maiden makes a sharp grunting sound as you strike. It throws off her counter and you manage to side step the thrust she was aiming under your shield

At the same moment, Davalus disappears over the lip of the shaft...

Re: Meanwhile, Back Up on the Street

For whatever reasons unknown the second doctor who had held the saw had not taken any action except stare in abject fascination as the magical chain dragged his companions down the lift pit. The chain whips about and hooks him beneath the arm pit, starting to drag him to the same fate.
However, the magical chain would soon expire and Chandanar still faces the featureless female warrior. So he swings his blessed blade hard against her again, realizing that she probably did not even know of her companion's seeming demise given the divine spell that still blankets the room in silence.

rolled 26 using 1d20+7. Perception
Did Bane (human) have an additional effect, i.e. more severe wounds/dented armour ?

Hit AC19 for 9 damage
Hit human AC21 for 15 damage

(COP) Combat Maneuver: drag 2nd doctor
rolled 30 using 1d20+10. COP Drag vs 2nd doctor
A natural 20... anything special about that ?

Re: Meanwhile, Back Up on the Street

Weren't you adding in damage from the Bane? Sorry. Not sure what you're looking for.

She swings and lands a wild blow off your temple withthe flat side of her blade as your own blade strikes home. She makes a choking gasp and falls over backwards, landing like a overturned tinker's stall.

The fire has caught the wall seperating the storeroom from the main room. The smoke is making it hard to see. But you can not see the remaining doctor at the lift.

Re: Meanwhile, Back Up on the Street

I always addded the Bane optionally, not really for sure if she is in fact human (might be e.g. a half-elf beneath that helmet for all I know)
Chandanar did not see through the smoke and because of the silence he was not able to determine if his conjured magical chain had been successful in deleting the threat of the doctor. He made sure to stab his sword into the the armoured figure, just to make sure that this threat at least was ended.
Carefully he stared into the smoke, anticipating further foes.
rolled 9,4 using 1d20+6,1d8+2. attack, damage
Not sure if she's dead, so I try to make sure.

Re: Meanwhile, Back Up on the Street

Okay. I'm with you now. As far as you can tell, she is human. Without taking off her armor though it's hard to tell.

She does not move. The smoke is starting to sting your eyes, but from what you can tell, you seem to be alone at the moment. Outside of the dead bodies.

Re: Meanwhile, Back Up on the Street

Only now does Chandanar realize a minor mistake in his plan: Davalus had probably been dragged down the shaft, now it was impossible to search him.
The doctor had mentioned papers and the smoke might mean that they were about to burn any evidence of the vile actions they had done, most likely in the name of none other than the Queen herself.
First though, he carefully approaches the shaft and looks down to the lower floor, hoping to see three bodies down below.

Re: Meanwhile, Back Up on the Street

You can't see much in the room around. Fortunately the shaft hasn't filled with smoke yet. You look downwards...

(Okay. Let's hook you up with the others. Move over to the Hospice thread please.)
