Off To The Cinderlands

The fog is fairly thick on the river. You take a break from the oars to look back one last time.  Behind you lie the walls of Korvosa.  From here nothing looks different.  The walls stand as they usually do.  High.  Forbidding.  Behind them you can make out a few high roofs and towers.

But that is all just a trick of the night.  It's too dark to see that those roofs are burned. That those towers are broken.  There aren't any fires raging in the city tonight, so there's no billowing cloud of smoke rising above it all.  These days, that in and of itself is the sign of a peaceful night in Korvosa.

Tarrov and the Chamberlain saw you out through the Akronas private dock. Tarrov knew of a small pier used by smugglers across the river, so that's your destination.  You scrounged what goods you could from the Arkona estate.  The servants must have been spying on the whole thing somehow.  When you went back inside, you found they had already looted the estate and were gone.

Typical.

Chandanar sighs and turns back to rowing.  He seems tired, but he has spent the last twelve hours healing you and breaking curses.  So he probably is due a little weariness.  He says in a fairly dull voice, Just to make sure I got everything, we're going to the Cinderlands to try to find this Thousand Bones guy you helped before.  Right?  The name 'Thousand Bones' means nothing to you Zuni.  But both Selvin and Izzick remember the Cinderland shaman who owes you a debt.  The two of you and Tarrick had entered the lair of a necromancer to rescue the body of a fallen barbarian prince for both Thousand Bones and the Korvosan Watch.  That seems so long ago.  You know you'll have to travel north.  But more than that none of you have much knowledge of.  Somehow, somewhere along the way, you'll need to pick up the necessary intel to find Thousand Bones and his clan, the Skoan-Quah.

Well.  At least you don't have to worry about the Queen's crazed killers coming after you.  You hope.

Chandanar stops and points.  Is that the dock ahead?

You look in the direction he's pointing.  From Tarrov's description, it seems to be your target.  A small river port with three docks, set back from the main body of the river on a small rock outcropping.  Oddly there are no lights on in the two buildings built to one side of the dock.  It is late.  And these are supposed to be smugglers.  But you would think there would be someone up still.

Lots of info thrown at you right there.  Let me know what questions come up.  Thanks

Off To The Cinderlands

In reply to The Dealer (msg # 1):

Your boat glides forward.

There are two piers running off a central platform.  A rowboat is tied to the eastern one.  The western one has a stack of crates at one end.

A stairwell runs up from the platform to a clearing on the bank.  Two buildings sit on opposite sides of the clearing.  A larger one, probably a warehouse, has a large sliding door at one end. More crates are stacked up against the other end of the warehouse.  The other building has a sign set up outside.  Moonlight spilling across it allows you to read the name 'High End Life'.  A tavern maybe?

No one seems to be about.

Re: Off To The Cinderlands

Selvin was uncharacteristically quiet on the way to the boat and during the boat ride. He seemed lost in his own thoughts, perhaps thinking about the person they were going to meet. The guy had been...creepy and intense, and he was worried that the barbarians might not wait to see that they weren't enemies before attacking.

He nodded to Chandanar's summing up. "That's about the size of it, yes."

Selvin gave another nod and took to the air, carefully so as not to overturn the boat. He landed on the dock and walked a bit ahead of where the boat would be arriving just to make sure nothing was going to jump out at them. But then he turned back to catch a rope if tossed so he could tie the boat up.

In reply to Selvin Larst (msg # 3):

As Selvin lands, a raccoon goes scuttling away from the crates.  As you approach you can see one of the crates has broken open.  It was full of apples.  Now the apples are withered, brown, and moldy.  A smell of cider wafts from them.

Chandanar hefts some of your bags onto the dock as the elf ties off the boat.  He glances at the apple mess and mutters softly, You'd think someone woulda cleaned that up.  Assuming anyone was around to.  He glances towards the buildings.  Still.  Seems odd someone would leave apples here.  Smuggling them into the city would bring a good price these days

Re: Off To The Cinderlands

Zuni had sat comfortably in the bow of the small boat, leisurely dipping her hand over the side and into the water.  It wasn't often that she had a chance to get out of Korvosa.  It wasn't as though there was anything out here for her.  Occasionally she would look back at Selvin, who seemed oddly quiet.  What could weigh so heavily on his mind, she wondered.

"Is there anything that you all want to tell me about this Thousand Bones person?" she asked as the boat was pulled up to the dock.  Zuni hopped off of the boat and tied one of the lines to the dock.  She frowned at the mess left of the apples. "What a waste of good apples.  Seems awfully quiet about..."

"Honestly, I'm not too sure myself. I was one of the folk they rescued from the necromancer - I wasn't really privy to who sent them or why, however." Izzick stood up onto the dock, looking towards Korvosa as long as it was visible. It felt like any moment the whole place would go up in flames or be the site of a second starfall or any other number of calamities. "It would have to be Selvin who tells you any more detail than what we did."

The boat is tied off.  Chandanar mumbles something while working his prayer beads.  I don't pick up on anyone living around.  I think we're safe to poke around.  Though I think if we follow the river upstream, we might find a more...uh...'living' trade post.  We could get directions and supplies there.

Re: Off To The Cinderlands

Selvin looked thoughtful for a long moment before he spoke up to Zuni's question. "After...Lamm....we were working with the City Guard. One o'the things we did involved Thousand Bones. He was part of a...what'd ya call it....diplomatic envoy?...Anyway, his nephew was the chieftain's son an' apparently not only got killed in the city but the body somehow got sold t'a necromancer!!" He shook his head in disbelief and disgust.

"So we got sent in t'the necromancer's lair, which was SO much fun!" Obvious sarcasm there. "We not only got the body back but picked up a certain half-orc spellcaster while we were in there. We returned the body t'Thousand Bones. I mean, all in all, a lil' creepy older guy decked out in bones but he was reasonable enough t'let us go in an' handle it rather than like start a diplomatic incident or anything. An'...he said he was in our debt afterwards which is why we have t'go see 'im specifically."

Zuni let all of what Selvin had said sink in.  "So he's not likely to try and skewer us as soon as we walk in the front door.  I can live with that." she mused.  The docks seemed to be deserted and some scavenger part of her wanted to check the around and see what they could loot.  Old habits really die hard.  "Since we're here, let's take a look around.  I'm not one to pass up a chance to...acquire...supplies."

Keeping an eye out, Zuni started up the dock.

As you suspected, the larger building seems to be a warehouse.  The door is broken open, the thick padlock which once secured it is ripped into two pieces and laying on the ground.

A sign in front of the other building reads Orl's Worms n' Such  Below those words are printed Beer and Fresh Fried Fish.  There are no lights inside but the building seems intact.

Which one first?

Peering through the spaces in the partly broken door, you can see the warehouse was ransacked. Crates appear to have been clawed open or were thrown against the wall.  Scratch marks on the walls show it was definitely a beast that did it, though they would have rather large claws.

There are a few crates that appear undamaged.

There seems to be no one or nothing around

If the door did have traps, they went off when who- or whatever mooked through the first time.

The crates contain some interesting goodies.  Dried apricots.  Salt packed smoked salmon.  Some mushrooms that you don't know the name of but are probably worth a hundred coins an ounce.  These smugglers seem to have been moving high end groceries.

You do find a serviceable looking heavy cross bow.  And one of crates has probably enough crossbow bolts to last you the rest of your life.  Three hundred of them maybe.  The bolts looks fairly high end.  Consider them masterwork.

There's a note in the bolt box.  For shipment/Paid.  To C. Lander

Otherwise, that seems to be it for the warehouse.

Re: Off To The Cinderlands

The food stuffs were a surprise find, especially with the pile of rotting apples outside.  Zuni picked up one of the dried apricots and took a bite to see if it was still any good.  She then sniffed at the dried salmon.  Oh, how nice a meal this would all make, she thought as her mouth started to water a little.  After all that time scrounging for supplies in Korvosa, this was an unbelievable find and she wanted to take it all.  She could think of a few townsfolk who would love to make a meal of all of this, including herself.

Zuni hefted the crossbow and felt the weight of the weapon.  It was certainly heavier than her bow and felt more unwieldy.  From the looks of it though it might be able to give her bow some competition, not that her bow was anything special.  Resting the crossbow against the crate, she next pulled out one of the bolts and examined it in the magical light.  She let out an appreciative whistle. "Nice quality.  This is not something that I would expect to be lying around in such numbers."

She looked back at the others.  "It would be a real shame to leave this here.  Anyone want a crossbow?  Izzick?  Chandanar?"

Zuni hands the crossbow to Chandanar, along with a handful of bolts.  She was pretty sure that he could gather up as many as he needed.  She went back to the crate with the apricots and took another handful to munch on.  They were too tasty and sweet for her to pass up.  Some of the salmon along with more of the apricot disappeared unapologetically into her pack.

"Let's check out the next building."  she said, her words slightly muffled from her chewing on the dried fruit.  "Anyone else want some?  The fruit and fish are still good.  Spoils of the adventure and all that."

The tavern, since that's what it seems to function as, seems much more intact than the warehouse.  It is roughly an L shape, with the main door in the middle of the long section.  The back end is probably the kitchen and private quarters.  It looks like there is a separate entrance around the side.

As you get closer, you can pick up an odd smell.  Sadly, it's one you've all become used to in the past month.  The scent of decaying bodies.  You would guess there will be quite a charnel house inside.

It seems to be coming from beyond the main door, which you would assume leads into the bar and common room.

It appears a fight broke out.  It's tough to tell, what with all the watery eyes and dim moonlight, but you would guess the fight was about a week ago.  The dead men and women were probably the owners, servants, and guests of the post.  There are twelve of them in total.

The rest of the room is filled with broken tables and chairs, dried blood stains thick enough to mistake for garish carpeting, and other remnants.

The people were killed with sharp objects.  At first you think they might have been claws of some wild animal, but you dismiss that.  They look more like the marks of someone with a clawed cestus.  A couple of people died of sword blows and one shows signs of poisoning...you even find the blow dart on the back of his neck...but most of the carnage was by someone who has an identity crisis with a badger.

Under the rubble from one of the tables you find a red glove.  A mark is on it.  One you've come to love so well.  The Red Mantis.  Your friends in the death cult were here before you.

He studies the bodies a moment.  He nods at one that seems better dressed.  He might be the owner.  Or a merchant.  That one... he nods at another body which seems to be equipped with the best armor.  ...is probably the best warrior out of all of them.  At least by appearances.  So he may have noticed something about the group's tactics or some such.  And she... he indicates the body of what you guess would be the tavern's server.  ...may have been pretty observant.  At least I think anyone who has to sling drinks in a place like this would have to be to stay healthy.  You guys decide which one we want to talk to.  I'd suggest since we have four questions and there's four of us, we each ask one question.  Fair enough?

Chandnar nods and studies the scroll a moment.  He then starts to chant.

The air inside the room turns a bit colder.  Chandanar's breath puffs out in small clouds.  At the end of his chant, one of those clouds wafts away from him and settles on the lips of the dead woman.  It sinks into her mouth and after a moment, you hear a faint wheezing noise, as if her breathing was labored, though there is no sign of her chest rising or falling or color returning to her slashed cheeks.

Chandanar leans over and says distinctly, What did the people who did this to you look like?

After a moment the wheezing becomes more rhythmic.  You can hear the sound of a woman's voice, distant like she was not in the room, but not far away either.  Almost as if maybe she was standing just behind you.

Woman...with spear.  Four men.  Red.  Had steel claws.  Another woman.  With teeth.

The assassins were still close.  A day is not that much...

Zuni whirled around as she heard the roar and the crashing of the door.  "Belgar?" she said, surprise in her voice for she had thought her Dwarves companion had yet to recover from the Arkonas venture. Here he was though, and he was not alone.  Zuni drew her blade.  "At least you saved us the trouble of having to look for the killers."

Re: Off To The Cinderlands

Izzick looked confused, he'd been certain the Dwarf had died, but with his hands casting he began his spell as the mob formed for them. It had come to him recently - and his cursed blood quickly began to empower his tattoos to form two electrical orbs in front of him. Each moved forward into the crowd.

Let's try out my new spell: Ball Lightning

I summon two ball lightnings for 10 rounds. If a globe enters a space with a creature, it stops moving for the round and deals 3d6 points of electricity damage to that creature, though a successful Reflex save negates the damage. Creatures wearing metal armor take a -4 penalty on this Saving Throw.

So hitting two creatures. If any of them are wearing metal, I'll go for them first, otherwise one at the caster and one at someone else from the 5. Reflex Save DC20 (-4 penalty if metal armor)

Seeing the Red with the wand, Zuni immediately changed her tactics.  She wasn't going to wait for them to come to her, not when that wand could unleash any sort of spell.  Unfortunately the Red clad opponent was too far for her to throw a dagger at him, which left one weapon with which she could reach out and slap him with.

In a blur of motion, Zuni sheathed her blade and unslung her Composite Longbow.  She pulled two arrows from her small quiver attached to her pack and drew, aiming at the opponent with the wand.

Interesting move Belgar

The two Reds on the roof come apart under Selvin's various appendages of doom. Izzick's 3 glowing missiles slam into the sniper, knocking him off his aim him onto his back. Meanwhile the wizard's sizzling globes bounce off the backs of their targets, sending the smell of charred flesh eating 8nto the air.

The Wand Red goes Erk as Zuni's find his chest znd throat. He then goes flying as anot her Red hurdles into his back courtesy of Belgar

It is then there is a tavern shaking KA-BOOM, sending an intense wave of heat and flying debris into Zuni and Izzick's backs...

It seems at least one of the Reds that jumped to the ground on the other side of the tavern has a bit more umph than these others. Because someone just blew a hole in that wall.

Zuni and Izzick, 14 pts dam/Reflex save for half. Selvin and Belgar, you hear it and see it but are not directly effected. Wand and Belgar's Bouncy-Toy Red are prone but alive. Crossb9w is only living Red on roof with Selvin. Other Reds are out of sight on the other side of the exploded tavern wall. For the moment. Selvin would have to go over the roof on that side to get to them. Belgar would have to either run around the side of the building or charge back inside and through the hole in the wall. Zuni and Izzick can trunk to face the hole in the wall. Best guess is three or more Reds outside the hole in the wall.

Selvin grabs the the incapacitated assassin that he had and flew down to the ground to see if the others needed help - but it looked like they had it under control. "Is everyone alright? I managed to keep one alive." He noted that Belgar had as well and gave a nod to the dwarf.

Re: Off To The Cinderlands

You have two:  Crossbow and Red Leader.  Red Leader has a split lip and boot print on his face, as well as some soot marks.  Otherwise he seems okay.

Crossbow has a deep gash in his side, but Chandanar is applying enough hooha to keep him alive.

The two cultists glare at each of you, letting you know they won't give away anything.

In reply to Zuni Runesong (msg # 82):

The Reds devotion must be based on faith, because there sure isn't a lot of coin in their pockets.  You do find a purse on the leader with two gems and a few coins 150 gp total.  You also find a cache of potion bottles.  Four filled with purple liquid-healing-and three filled with a black, tarry looking goo.  From the smell it seems to be some kind of poison.  A last bottle contains a reddish liquor.  Some kind of concoction designed to help withstand the element of fire Fire resistance.  Two draughts worth.  The healing potions are all Cure Serious.  The black goo will add an extra 1d20 dam to slashing or piercing attacks.  12 uses total

The wand you had been threatened with is a dud.  Just enchanted to have a magical aura on it.  Probably was created to force your attention on the one holding it.

There are three light crossbows, all of master work quality.

Red Leader appears to have the choicest bits.  He has two rings, one enchanted to help keep one's movements limber and one which seems to kick in to protect the wearer during falls Ring of Free Action and Feather Fall.  Lastly, he has a necklace depicting a preying mantis.  It is made of silver and inlaid with ruby.  Chandanar frowns at it.  I think it's the symbol of his diety

The necklace is a holy symbol worth 350 gp

"I'll grab a healing potion. Seems I've been needing those more and more every day," Izzick says as he reaches out for one of the purple vials. "We can split the gold evenly if that works out for everyone." But the spoils weren't all they had, and soon he was looking towards their living assassins. "Who wants the first go at trying to open up their traps? I doubt they're just going to be giving up answers." He certainly missed Tarrov now.

He then put on his 'war face' and slowly stalked towards the assassins. "I know. Yer tough. Yer scary. An' ya think ya won't talk ever. But I'm bettin' after I finish eatin' the firs' one o'ya the secon' one'll talk." He grinned widely as he moved closer and his symbiote started to growl. "An' we're...SO...HUNGRY!"

Crossbow kind of studies you all.  He seems a bit more wavering in his faith.

Also, his roll was not so good.

You think Crossbow might break.  If you could just push him over the edge...

Crossbow might be more susceptible to the monster scare now Selvin.  Or whatever else ya'll might think up.  Next post, besides the rolls for intimidate or what have you, please give me the questions you want to ask.  Everyone can chime in.  I'll assume you don't ask if the roll is low.  That will help speed things up.

"The leaders not going to talk no matter what you say so let me take a crack," Izzick says as he raises his hands up, a soft glow from a channeled spell. "It's easy enough to make someone talk with a spell. More they fight it, more likely there is to be damage afterwards." It was a bluff, but a damn good one as his fingers pressed against the head of the skull of the leader. "We'll get one of them still able to talk I'm sure."

Casting Touch of Idiocy on the leader, not actually in hopes of making him talk but mostly as a fear tactic against the Crossbow guy.

The Cinderlander is a fairly infamous mercenary operating within the Cinder Lands.  But the specifics of why he's so infamous aren't well known.  Supposedly he has some kind of feud with some of the Barbarian Clans.

Zuni hid a chuckle behind her hand as Belgar imitated a woman's voice in response to the Red Leaders pleas.  It was just too humorous a scene.  The fierce dwarf playing mother to a Red Mantis Assassin.  She took a moment to clear her throat regain her composure.

"Maybe he has an army of his own?" she replied to Selvins words.  "If it's just a group of Red Mantis assassins then maybe we can deal with them, but Queens guards?  With all the turmoil going on in the city, why send forces outside to attack the Cinderlander?"

Belgar keeps to himself at the bazaar and does a bit of people watching.  Trying to pick up how the locals deal with the local climate.  He then works his way out to the edges of town and tries to get a lay of the land and assess what supplies they may need in this strange place before heading back for a bit of shopping.

At the bazaar, he'll first try and locate an amulet of natural armor.  After that, he'll see if he can find anything that would help them survive in the cinderland wilds such as a belt of foraging.
