At the crack of dawn the surviving Blue Llama folk, Wandering Rangers and Agimori move on, escorting the large herd of Bisons, High Llamas and Sables.

The funeral fires of those that fell had burnt down to beds of coals and ash; the remains of the three Blue Llama braves and two of the Agimori hunters having been carried off by the summoned wind.

A sombre mood lay over the people of Prax as they moved off towards the nearby cliff and the slope that would take them down into the plains before the Rhino Rocklands and hopefully before the day was spent, to the Giant Finger Holes....

Passing a jumble of rocks festooned with dew covered webs and filled with dark pools of shadow they discover a relieved looking Hoskar and Melock  astride their mounts.

In reply to GM (msg # 1):

Tarnessh gave his condolences to Cantalas and the Agimori. "They died in the most honourable possible way, fighting Chaos to defend others." He noted.

"Aye" replies Cantalas "Though it worries me why such a large group of these creatures were here."

The Agimori say nothing and jog off ahead to scout the way.

At the earliest opportunity to do so, having paid his own respects to Cantalas, Hoskar slips off the still-poorly Kor and rearranges his limited goods on Ram such as to accommodate a rider. Not what you expected, is it old chap? he coos soothingly to the older beast; pressing his forehead almost lovingly against the horn of his father's mount for a moment before jumping onto the rhino's back; intoning half-playfully where once there was a garden, we ride to restoration...if you'll let me old man.

Ram, resenting this unfamiliar intrusion, is not best pleased and for a couple of minutes it's all Hoskar can do to avoid a humiliating fall until he's joined by Four-Paws who leaps gracefully onto the rhino's neck to ride in her usual spot. How it happens, Hoskar's not quite sure; but the touch of his new friend's paws soothes the rhino's tetchiness and from then on he allows himself to be ridden peacefully while Hoskar rubs his bruises; even when the cat jumps off again.

He looks around the Rangers to spot Nixa and Sand Fox, having been hit overnight by a thought which should have come to him some time earlier. I've been noticing our sizes and we look about the same. Should have thought of this sooner really. Now I've got this metal stuff, either of you want to use the wyvern hide armour? I'm keeping the old helmet - that closed-in tin pot is suffocating - but I can't use two hauberks at once, can I?

Melock looks like he hasn't slept all night, but he is still awake enough to greet everyone and offer his condolences to those who have lost someone. He watches with quiet amusement while Hoskar settles Ram down and then wearily takes up his usual spot at the rear, helping herd the bison.

Nixa and Sand Fox thank Hoskar profusely but both decline the generous offer.

"Ours will do until we can win ourselves our own armour."

As Tarnessh rides past, a sack tied to Grumpfy's saddle bag begins to kick. It's the two Jack Rabbits that Melock had asked the Sun Hawk brave to look after.

Amara voiced her opinion. "Are you or are you not wandering rangers? These things were won in battle by wandering rangers. A battle won by one of us, is a battle won by all. You should wear this armour with pride, for it makes us all stronger. You have many accomplishments as part of our group. We do not grudge you it, which is why you were offered it."

"Oh hey!" Tarnessh said in surprise then recognition as the jackrabbits began kicking. He had Grumpfy trot over to Melock and Tarnessh passed the bag over to him. "Here you go. I almost forgot about these ones."

In reply to Tarnessh Listens-To-Silence (msg # 8):

He looks at the bag with half asleep eyes, "Taya didn't get to eat much last night and I think Ohanzee would kill me if she ate them. Could carry them today? I'm sure you can get Tulox to leave them be and hunt something else."

Tarnessh shrugged. "Sure, shouldn't be a problem. I just feel kind of sorry for them, trapped in a bag like that."

In reply to Tarnessh Listens-To-Silence (msg # 10):

"Cheers, it wont be for to much longer. Once we get to the Giant Finger Holes and find Ohanzee, he can choose which one he wants as a familiar and let the other one go." He looks over to Delenda then back at Tarnessh, "I take it there's a reason she got a weapon on her?"

"Maybe because if I hadn't your little golden bird here would be Scorpion food. You can try and take it off me if you'd like...."

A big grin cracks Melocks face, "You were saved by a Sable rider?" He starts laughing, "That's going to haunt you for a long time" Still laughing he turns to Delenda, "You've made my day and you have my thanks for saving Firestorm. If the others aren't worried about you having it, why should I be?"

It wasn't just a sable rider that saved Tarnessh, though the way Delenda fought was worthy of a Thunderbird. Henal says puffing himself up.

"The others were too busy falling off their Bison to care..."  Delenda winks at Melock, surprisingly upbeat for someone who is a hostage.



"That is true you fought well Henal Longgrass. Have you opened the hide roll that was found with the scorpion men yet?"

In reply to Melock (msg # 13):

"Hopefully I won't get knocked up and nearly eaten a third time. I try to almost be dinner only once a year, at most."

Really? you'll have to tell me what happened, that sounds like a story that I need to know" He smiles back at her, while doing his best not to show how uneasy he feels about her having a weapon.



"So who fell off then? You've always been good in a fight Henal, which, I'm guessing is why you where chosen by Thunderbird."

Akala offered his condolences to the Agimori and The Blue Llama's.

The Big Brave also attempted to pick over the Scorpion Men's remains in the morning, looking for coin and- most importantly- some more of the sweet smelling antidote Melock and Hoskar had found.

Later, he chuckled at the story of the Bison riders falling from their mounts. He looked admiringly at Delenda, wondering what the future might hold for this fiery young princess.  The mere concept of a Sable rider riding into battle with Bison Riders and Rhino Riders... After Moonbroth... Seemed inconceivable.

And yet, was this not one of the tasks the Wandering Rangers were to perform?  The unification of the tribes?  Akala would have thought the Sables the most difficult to reach (outside of the Morocanth), but here it was, an opportunity to build such a bridge.

Akala looked away, thinking If only I hadn't killed the opportunities brother..."

Amara smiled pleased that Delenda had grown in stature enough to joke with the others. It seemed to Amara the Delenda had found her place in life. The woman had never seemed to be happier and sharing jokes with people even the day before that had hated her. Both her fellow braves and Delenda could now be more at ease, they'd shared blood in a fight. She nodded once, smiling to Delenda as a gesture of well earned respect and approval, before sitting out on the left where she preferred to be. It was good to let Delenda absorb the goodwill of all around her.

Amara passed her respects to the agimori and Blue Llama peoples too, acknowledging their courage and sacrifice in the fight against the common enemy of all. As they started to approach the giant finger holes Amara started to relax, wondering how the group would approach. She wondered when the Blue Llama people would notice the changes in the Earth around them that signified the changes that had taken place. They seemed so evident to Amara, but to someone who did not pass this place often they might seem as nothing.

It is well known amongst the group by now that both brothers joined the group partly because of Amara.

Sand Fox listens to the brave say her part and then replies

"Shut up Amara. This is between us and Hoskar. You do not need to give your opinion on everything."

Nixa nods in agreement.

"Aye this has nothing to do with you or Rangers and everything to do with us as braves."

Akala finds that the scorpion men have been picked clean, with any wealth having been distributed between the Blue Llamas and Agimori.

As he asks if anyone has an antidote, one of the Eirithans explains that for one to work it must be administered straight away.

On a brighter note he discovers that Melock had found a good haul of coins as well as a gem, some nomad jewellery and another potion of some sort.

The rescuers' find was also shared, Hoskar pointing out that the hide was from a cow and that the writing was Sartarite, the language of those from far to the West. He said he'd examine it in detail when he had some time.

Soon the Rangers have begun their descent to the plain below, travelling down a zig zagging trail, both steep and precarious. It goes without mishap and those who reach the bottom first find two Rhino Riders waiting for them...

It's Greeshar, Amara's twin brother and the Skywatchers' shaman Whispers from the Sky.

Henal takes the heads from the cowhide and puts them onto a funeral pyre before they leave camp, taking time to comiserate with the Agimori and Blue Llamas for their losses.

Let Delenda continue to bear arms though she is still under ransom. I did need her help in the battle with the scorpion men as Kobal and Salen's courage did not fail them but the darkness made them stumble in the charge against the scorpion men.

In reply to GM (msg # 23):

Acknowledging Greeshar with a salute Henal speaks Greetings Whispers from the Sky. What brings you here to meet us?

"It has everything to do with your stupidity and nothing to do with your being braves. Do you not think the foes we face are above the normal ones you do as a brave. You're not a brave any longer, you're something more special a ranger. Do whatever you must, cast lots, have a contest, but one of you should be wearing the better armour to help us." She made an agitated gesture with her fingers "Until then, as you've requested, I will leave you alone and have nothing to do with either of you."

Amara needed the time on her own out on the left to lower her anger at the two. Perfectly good armour and they were trying to fight without the best protection possible. Who would have to tell their mother if they fell. Amara knew who it would be. It would be her.

Distracted by her irritation by both Sand Fox and Nixa, it took her longer to recognise it was Whispers and Greeshar out in front. Her eyes widened as she set Thunderfoot into a gallop towards them. "GREESHAR" Amara shrieked with glee as she rode "Whispers!" It was good to see her brother and arguably best friend and Greeshar looked to be better!

Akala rode over the crest eager to see what the Giants Finger Holes might behold.

Upon seeing his cousin The Big Brave exclaimed "Greeshar!  Coz!"

He moved to embrace the man after Amara, inspecting him to make sure he was well.  The Stoneface grinned, looking sideways at Amara, saying, "Little Spark has grown to become wildfire!"

Akala then took a moment to introduce himself to the other brave as well.

Greeshar returns Henal's salute and then Amara is upon him. Immediately he's checking her arm "Ohanzee said...By the Great Spirits what happened?"

Whispers from the Sky smiles, dismissing her perpetual look of shyness momentarily. Before she can reply to Henal she spots Akala

"I did not foresee this...Is that Akala Stoneface?"

The immense brave sees that it is little Whispers all grown up. He'd heard that she'd been apprenticed to old Koka, their clan shaman, but hadn't seen her since before Moonbroth and Koka's death.

And here she is a full blown shaman herself, emanating power and surrounded by barely seen spirits. She's sat atop Below Me a huge Rhino with a renown ferocity and deep intelligence.

Flicking back her long fringe off her pale face, she then studies the large group now approaching

"Blue Llamas...Hmmm and a Sable brave and a good sized herd of Bison. So things have been going well?"

In reply to Henal she adds "We are duty bound to meet the Earth Witch like yourselves and this is the only way down for many leagues. I divined that you would be here...Yesterday or today. You were beaten by Ohanzee, by a few hours...."

Greeshar fixes Akala with a wary look.

As the Rangers greet the new arrivals the rest of the nomads surge past, the Blue Llamas looking on in interest at Greeshar and Whispers from the Sky, ruing on their High Llamas with loud calls , whistles and shouts. The Agimori on the other hand spread out, either to hunt or to scout out the route.

A look of surprise passed over Akala's face like a wind over a field of wheat.

"Whispers from the Sky?  You look..." he looked the woman up and down, blushing as much as his swarthy, sun tanned, golden-bronze skin would allow.

Finally managing to regain his composure, he finished respectfully, "You look like a true Brave woman.  Strong of body and..." the Stoneface noted the spirit activity that swirled around the woman, "...strong of spirit."

He embraced her warmly.

At the look from Greeshar, Akala attempted to clap the man on the shoulder, "Coz!  It is me!  You rememb-" the statement was interrupted by a hacking coughing fit, that left the Big Brave looking a little pale, and his rib cage heaving with the effort.

"Forgive me," he said, forgetting his intention of smoothing Greeshar's rough edges, "Between being poisoned by a Chaos Storm earlier this week, and stung by a Scorpion Man just last night, I am not feeling my best.  I am excited to be rejoined with so many of the Sky Watcher clan, but I also need rest and time to regain my strength."

With a few more coughs, Akala continued to guide Thundercloud towards their destination.

Melock spends the the morning gradually working his way round the herd, changing where he is guarding every so often in an effort to keep himself awake and alert, but it is no coincidence that as they follow the trail down the cliff he is next to Delenda. "There's no easy way of bringing this up, so I'm going to be blunt," he pauses as he collects his thoughts, Why do I feel the need to explain myself to her? "I doubt there will be many at the temple who will be pleased to see you with us, even less so if you are armed. Some might even want to kill you on sight, but as our," he pauses again to think of a better word than captive, "guest, you are under our protection, but you are also our responsibility. So for your safety and that of anyone else at the temple, when we get there, you'll need to hand back your weapon." He visibly tenses, but makes sure his hands are not on any of his own weapons. "I think it would be a good idea if you had one of us with you while we are there. I'm sure Amara wont mind you staying with her, if she cant, I will. Though that's presuming they'll let me back in the temple after last time."
When he hears Amara's shout he looks round, Greeshar and Whispers? He wont be happy to see Delenda either, crap. "Thats Amara's brother Greeshar and one of their Shaman, Whispers from the Sky. I doubt he'll be happy to see you, even less so that your armed and not bound and gagged," he rubs the bridge of his nose, "look, to make things easier for all of us, give me your weapon, I'll leave it hanging on Stinky so its easy for you to get it, but at least you dont have it. I'll ride next to you until we get to the Earth temple. I'll be honest, I can't wait to see his reaction to you, he'll hate you because of being a sable, but because he's a Stormbull, he'll like you for killing chaos."

Kobal joins the others as their make their preparations in the morning.  "The spirit of the Saxaul has sent word ahead that we are approaching.  Those at the Giant Finger Holes will be expecting us."



Kobal himself is a bit doubtful that the Sable brave bears a weapon, though he tries not to show it.  "She fought well," he says, "and did not try to escape.  I think she has earned some trust from us.  And gratitude."  Though not for laughing at my fall.



"I was leading the charge," says Kobal defensively.  "In the dark, so as not to alert the scorpion men.  If I had not struck the cactus, the others would have, and hurt themselves..."




"Greeshar," Kobal roars, and rides up to the brave.  "It's good to see you well again."  He gives the rhino rider a playful head butt.  "And you, Wise One, well met."



"Ohanzee?  Where is that trouble maker?  I'll kill him!

"But first, come, meet Cantalas, who leads these Blue Llamas.  And there Agimori who have joined our party as they heard of Emesh-Ga's return."  Kobal introduces two newcomers to Cantalas.

Delenda shrugs and hands over the lance without question, though she shows surprise at Melock saying that she might not be welcome at the Earth Temple.

Watching Greeshar warily she makes sure to keep Melock between her and the Rhino rider brave.

He does his best to keep the surprise off his face when she hands the lance over so easily. He makes sure its within easy reach if she needs it. When he see's her shock about the Earth Temple, "Sorry ,I didn't mean the Earth Witch wouldn't be welcoming, its just we don't know who else has arrived while we've been gone. We met a Storm Khan and his band last time we visited. That almost ended in disaster, though Amara held her own in a head butting contest." He smiles, "I'm sure it'll be fine, its just that, as we have found out to our cost, we need to get better at dealing with unexpected events."   

Amara shrugged "A mudshark bit it off. It is almost completely healed now." she stepped back to look over her brother pleased that he seemed to be in good health, before answering whispers. "Yes, we had...a lot of missteps, but we are here and have some good fortune on our side. Some poor fortune too, but it is life in the wastelands."

She turned to completely face Whispers "Thank you for healing Greeshar and restoring him to full health. I am in your debt. Akala has returned to us and we may have other allies that ride behind us too. We have so much news that we could spend days in the retelling of the story, but we should probably move so we can meet the Earth Witch by the appointed time."

Tarnessh greeted Greeshar respectfully (and a bit warily, as he was still a follower of Storm Bull.), but was glad that he was okay after that fever.

Greeshar takes hold of his sister's injured arm, examining the hand and stumpy still growing fingers. She's right it's nearly healed and in another two weeks would be complete.

"Who healed you?" he asks, relief on his normally scowling face.

Gresshar takes the headbutt from Kobal, returning his attention to his sister after a quick "It is good to see that you are still alive Kobal."



"Ohanzee he was camped at the bottom of the cliff when we arrived there. He has continues on his way to the Earth Complex" replies Whispers from the Sly.

Cantalas returns  the greetings and welcomes both new arrivals, then heads off to watch over his people as they continue onwards.

"You have just come from fighting chaos? Were they defeated?"

Greeshar looks annoyed to have missed the scrap.

Akala grinned at his cousin, clapping the man's upper arm, "Of course," he said easily, "But if there is anyone down there with some skill at treating poison, I would have their help."

"Grrr" answers the brave, still pissed that he missed out. Waving on Akala, Greeshar turns back to his sister....

Whilst the Rangers talk the Herd continues its march towards the ever nearing Earth Complex at the Giant Finger Holes. To the North looms the Rhino Rocklands, large jutting rocks, all that remains of the fallen great spirit and ancestor of the Rhinos.

The Seza nods happily falling in alongside the red headed brave, content to wait for her to finish talking to her brother.

Turning to Henal and any of the others close by she asks "So tell me of what has happened since we last saw you? Where is Haratt and Bamled, are they at the rear?"

Tarnessh smirked a bit and told Greeshar of all the Scorpion-Men that Grumpfy killed. "Oh you would have loved it!" He teased.

"I was healed by the only healer available. A Lunar Priestess by the name of Quinta Ruvallena. The price was of course too high and Zara has fallen under her spell as have a large number of others....but there was no other option at the time." she told her brother.

"Did anyone see him kill them?" he asks, looking like he's about to thump Tarnessh. "And what of you, how many did you kill?"

In reply to Whispers from the Sky (msg # 43):

Sadly Harrat and Bamled fell fighting chaos. Bamled with us against a tribe of cannibals that had captured Ohanzee and Tarnessh. Harratt fell when we were fighting Basmoli undead before we even reached Corflu. This has been a hard journey with many fights against chaos whether foul broo or scorpionmen or other beasts.

Though we dispersed the cannibals and hunted some of them down it hardly makes up for the loss of a comrade and fighting the broo we came close to losing others of us. But still we prevailed and left chaos weaker and aided the greening of the land.

I wonder if Grumpfy really killed all those scorpionmen. I did not see that as I was heading back to the camp to seek aid in rescuing Tarnessh again.

"I know that we found him surrounded by the bodies of the same number of Scorpion-men that tried to carry him off. As for me, I know I definitely killed two or three during a charge on their flank, but then I got knocked out...again." He muttered the last part.

"I think everyone who was there ended up killing some Scorpionmen. And Broo" Amara added, trying to stop Greeshar poking fun at Tarnessh.

"What?!"

"You went to....You....What the?" It looks like Greeshar will explode. He drops her injured arm as if it's cursed.

Turning to the others he bellows "You allowed this?"

As Melock passes Greeshar and Whispers, he does his best to keep between them and Delenda, "Greeshar! Whispers from the Sky! Good to see you both. Your looking a lot better than the last time I saw you Greeshar. Whispers, did I hear you right, that Ohanzee is making his way to the temple by himself? Is he ok, did he give any reason to be travelling by himself?" Melock laughs at Greeshars comment, "Since when does Amara let us tell her what to do?"

Tarnessh shrugged. "She is as capable of making her own decisions as we are. What were we going to do, tie her up? She's earned more respect then that. Besides, if she was infected by Chaos, surely you would be able to tell. We've all been very careful about our dealings with any Lunars to make sure that we weren't tainted." Tarnessh pointed out.

"What dealings? The only way to deal with Lunars is to kill them." Greeshar's voice drops down a notch or two in volume, making him seem more dangerous than ever.

Several of the Blue Llama folk are now riding close by, interested in the altercation.

The Seza fixes Melock with a long look "Perhaps you could tell me the answer to that Raven?"

Amara raised an eyebrow at all of the others, so quick to divorce themselves from the decisions when she was going to refuse it and allowed herself to be persuaded. "What is done, is done. It was the only way to be healed at the time. I did not have the luxury of having a foreigner with his own magic to call upon to have it healed. I had to resort to what was available at the time. Not a preferred choice, but the only one available." She stared at her brother evenly "If you think that is enough to leave me on my own, then so be it." she dismissed her brother "There are more lunars out there than grains of sand all around us. They cannot all be killed. They are invaders, but our numbers are small and cannot overcome an entire lunar garrison brother. Be reasonable. We will see many more lunars when we go to Pavis. Is your intent to kill them all? If it is then I will mourn you now so I do not have to when your suicidal path leads that way."

"Hmmm," he looks thoughtful, "maybe its because when he tried to call Raven back at the camp, he used the Blue Llama's children to help and something went wrong? So he ran to stop their leader Cantlas killing him?"

"I agreed with Amara getting her hand regrown by the Priestess in any case." Tarnessh added. "And I have had no reason to regret it since. The Lunar's might be Chaos-Friends, but Amara has been nothing but straight and true. She tore through Broo like a whirlvish just a few days ago. I know that you are her brother, Greeshar, but she is oath-bound like the rest of us are, and if you try to impugn her honour further, then I will resist you, even though I know you can defeat me."

In reply to Tarnessh Listens-To-Silence (msg # 48):

I'm sure I saw Grumpfy get stung and with that many scorpion men around it seems mad to believe that one bison could kill all of them. Something else intervened I'm sure, but what I don't know as I didn't think Waha would act to save one bison.

Hearing Greeshar's shout Henal looks over and speaks up Without a hand could one of us stay as a Wandering Ranger. The wastes are dangerous enough when you are whole and fit let alone injured or weakned. We encouraged Amara to get healed and the Lunar priestess was the only way it could be done. There are so many of them that we can't just act like all must die, better to bring them to the true gods against chaos.

Greeshar listens to the truth in his sisters words and is somewhat mollified. "I just feared for your safety" he adds gruffly, before suddenly breaking into loud laughter at Tarnessh's words.

To Henal he nods "I hear you fellow Thunderbird and though I disagree with you all I shall not bust any heads today."

In reply to Kobal's enquiry about Ohanzee he says "Well I shall help you kill him Kobal. He's nothing but trouble and it's time Raven got a beating."

Melock is fixed with a look and it seems that Greeshar's about to wink when he spots Delenda. He'd face palm if he knew how.

Then looking around at everyone as if they're mad he kicks Hidden Strength hard in the flanks and rides off in a cloud of dust towards the front of the herd and Akala....

Amara swore as she remounted his rhino "It seems as though a brush with death is not enough to keep him from his suicidal tendancies."

Amara stood on top of Thunderfoot, as he started to gallop to the front. "SHE IS UNDER MY PROTECTION" she shouted, drawing her javelin, her words resounding across the area with the noise of thunder. "Reign in or face my wrath."

"Aye, today we are re-united," says Kobal, looking at Greeshar.  "Brother, we faced a cursed choice.  Your sister had lost her hand, and the only one in the area who could help was a Lunar priestess.  Amara looked pale.  She had lost much blood.  We did not even know if this priestess would help.  As Henal has said, the Wastes are hard enough with two hands, let alone one.  To let your sister lose her hand would have been a slow death sentence.  The Elders had charged us to scout out the land, and the Moon Worshippers, in any event.

"Greeshar, you follow the Storm Bull.  You are taught to sense the taint of Chaos.  Look at your sister.  At her hand.  Do you sense any Chaos in her?

"I hate the Lunars as much as you.  Amara does too.  But sometimes (rarely, I know) the best action is not to kill them immediately.  Think of it this way: they have re-grown her hand.  She will survive and grow stronger.  When the time comes, together we will drive out the Moon Worshippers.  And Amara will be there with us, using the very hand they healed against them!  The stupid Lunars have helped us to defeat themselves, haha!"



Kobal watches with Amara as Greeshar rides off.  "And we haven't even told him about the sorcerer yet.  I wonder if he noticed Ohanzee's blue arm..."  Though I have misgivings about that sorcerer too.  Not the ways of the Wastes.

Akala listened to the conversation with interest, as most of the things discussed had occurred before his arrival.

It was actually the first he had heard of Haraat, and the description of his death seemed...odd.

Akala listened to Kobal intently as well.  He had become more and more impressed with the man's thoughtful nature and political tongue.  Gifts needed by any true leader.  He nodded at the man as he spoke, his manner showing his support for the Bison rider's words.

When Amara stood atop her Rhino, Akala looked about in confusion.  He did not see enough new people around for such drama to matter, and the gesture itself felt overly extroverted for his tastes.

His face said as much, and he shook his head at his cousin in admonishment, adding in a low voice, "Are you going to do that again when we reach the rest of the Clan?"

The Stoneface's eyebrows had shot up, and his eyes were almost comically wide, "Never cut what can be untied, Little Spark.  Save your wind for when it is needed- if it is even needed.  A simple conversation might gain greater results.  You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar."

He glanced over at Kobal, "Perhaps the one with the Golden Tongue should make Delenda's introduction, as it may be more favorably received."

The Big Brave sighed, his tone softening, "None of us want any harm to come to Delenda, but tact can make such undertakings easier...or much more difficult."

He gave his red-haired cousin a weak smile, followed suddenly by a few quick, dry cough into his hand.

Akala looked at his hand, his face unreadable, and wiped the hand on his trousers.

Amara turned to Akala a stern and angry expression on her face. "Akala you've been gone for too long. I fully expect Greeshar to try to kill Delenda." She pointed towards Delenda "It was I who brought her into this group and I that freed her when none here would speak to her. If it were not for her, how many of you would not be riding beside me? It was me that fought for her to be here and Greeshar who thinks not with his head, but only with his heart rides towards a sable princess, when a sable rider killed our parents....and you think I am the one for being foolish when I try to divert him from his action? You've no idea how he has changed."

Amara prepared to throw her javelin. Greeshar wouldn't listen. He didn't listen to anyone, though she hoped her voice and the clamour of the storms might cause him to listen.

Greeshar nods at Kobal, and unusually for him pays attention to what Kobal says. He shakes his head at his sister "Our parents were killed by these people....And your arm....Well you seem to have had no other choice...I will say no more."



Once he is away from everyone and if Akala follows he asks "So Akala how have you been since we last met?....You are looking well. Despite my mood and what has just happened I am happy to see you again. With you at our side we become strong again. I heard about the death of your father.....I....Well you and I both know how that feels."

"These last few weeks I have been with those others of our Clan that we have discovered since Moonbroth and as you obviously now know we are allied with these Bison folk. Camped at the Bison Khan grasslands they are well and our Rhino's healthy. The Prairie Thunder Clan have been joined by the Black Shield clan. They seem good people and are already making wedding plans between the families. There is talk of raids and glory and regaining their grazing lands across the river. I sense war is coming..."

Delenda rides up next to Amara "It's okay and to be expected. I did not know my people were responsible for your parents death. I would be the same and to be honest I am humbled that you have shown me so much friendship."

Whispers from the Sky nudges on her Rhino so that she now rides next to Emesh-Ga, the ancient Green Age spirit shimmering in the morning sunshine. He bows to the shaman and walks next to her as she rides.

The sounds of animals bellowing, bleating and lowing soon replaces that of raised voices, and as one the women of the Blue Llama clan begin to sing, praising the land and all that ride upon it....

Vegetation begins to appear, not much at first but enough to draw the attention of the Blue llama folk who point each new shrub or leafy tree out with glee.

Soon enough the scrub increases, with the addition of wild sage and the occasional stand of trees. It's not much but certainly an improvement on what was here before.

There's sign of game too. Bush Turkeys and tracks of small herds of impalas dot the ground as do the occasional corpse of a Bison. They bear the same marks as before and have been left alone by scavengers, no tracks anywhere near them.

Up above Tulox is having a field day as he captures bird after bird to eat.

There's marmot burrows and tracks of Ostrich, and the Agimori come back with several large lizards slung over one of their pikes, with reports that they found tracks of a group of Bisons running parallel to their path and have seen signs of Morokanth travelling to the North.

Salen and Peat chase down several Impala, their dogs cornering two within a collection of high rocks, where they find a partially buried amphora jutting from the sand. It's stoppered and when lifted out of the ground a sound of metal comes from within.

Hoskar paled at Amara's words to Sand Fox and Nixa; as tongue-tied as he'd been since things soured with Krakka Rumble. As the three braves ride along later, occasional snatches of conversation can be overheard.

Would have offered more privately if I'd thought...

...wouldn't be comfortable to own that which was not won...

...the sages in the city trade knowledge and share books - they call it a library. Our trade is more in combat...

...what? Library? City habits aren't for us...

...like putting a friend's bull to your herd to improve the tribe's stock...

...don't want to see your insides again...

...win our own one day...

I'll honour you either way: independence is good, prudence is good too is Hoskar's final word from the snatches of conversation to be overheard; the three still talking but in lower tones after that.




Still quiet and lost in thought, Hoskar has been listening in after making his greeting to Greeshar and reverencing the Seza. When Akala makes his suggestion, Hoskar smiles nervously.

Goldentongue? You seem to be playing my tune there. Think you mean me. I don't have a good track record with Sables, but will gladly speak up for this one if that Rangers want to put me at the fore in it. My familiar tells me we owe her much I did not myself witness.

As he sees Delenda ride up, he averts his eyes but adds The story of her honour and my shame; her grace and her strong fight against chaos after my rage may do much to build bridges. I'm not sure my words would be welcome to our...our guest, though.

Akala looked as if he was about to say something, but then stopped himself, looking at Greeshar, with one eyebrow raised.

Finally, he looked back at Amara, slowed to ride next to her, and spoke to her in low tones, his face and manner softening.


Then, after hearing Amara's reply to what he had said, Akala saluted his cousin and announced, loud enough for all to hear, "You are a truly magnificent warrior!"

The Stoneface rode forward to catch Greeshar and speak with him.



Akala nodded in thanks, "We survive and we continue to fight, it is our way.  Thick skin and a hard head, as all rhino's have," A small grin crept from behind the corner of the Big Brave's mouth.

"As to my health, I will be fine, but I do need some rest, and perhaps some attention from a healer to oust this damned chaos poison from my body," another dry cough came unbidden as if to punctuate the meaning.



Akala's eyebrows furrowed at Greeshar's words, "Regaining their lands from whom?  Lunars?  Chaos? ...I do realize there is a fine line there, but there is a difference."

He spoke to Greeshar some more, in hushed tones, glancing back over his shoulder from time to time.

Tarnessh is awestruck along with the Blue Llama folk. He had heard about the greening of the Finger Holes, but to see it with his own eyes was very different.

...sidles towards Melock and the Seza as nonchalantly as can be achieved on a laden, easily-exasperated rhino.

Wouldn't mind a chance to see Ohanzee before the shouting starts he observes worriedly. Still hoping there's a good explanation for everything. Is there a way to get ahead on this?

Amara watched her brother carefully, before sitting back down on her rhino's back, satisfied that Greeshar wasn't going to just outright kill Delenda. She leaned across to Akala "Akala, I am just about the only person that greeshar would ever listen to. He has no self control. If he sees or perceives something as hostile, he will strike at it. He's killed over petty things and will do so again.... unless something has changed. Perhaps he's found love, I cannot tell."

Finished with Akala, she turned to Delenda "A season ago, I would be the one killing you. I have as much anger over what happened at Moonbroth as he does. What we are trying to do is much more important then our anger, Delenda. It gives me the strength and courage to extend a hand in friendship....and I am glad I did. I no longer judge someone by the beast they ride, but by who they are, and you have proven yourself more than worthy. By actions and by words. You are welcome wherever I am whenever you so wish."

Amara turned to Cantelas wondering what he and the other blue llama people might make of what had happened, before realising he probably just wanted to beat sense into Ohanzee.

Melock looks down at Hoskars mount, "Not on that," he chuckles, "We'd have to push hard to get there much before anyone else," he yawns as he looks down the line of people and animals in front of them, "Ohanzee can look after himself, it's not as if he's going to stand with open arms as half the group charge towards him. We could try to make to the front so we are among the first to get there, at least that way we can try and make people listen to what he has to say."

In reply to Melock (msg # 74):

Hoskar grins back, and winks. Ram might be a bit elderly, but he can still charge if he needs to - just takes a bit of working up like when Taya punctured his arse.

Still, you're right. Sneaking about won't make anyone think better of anyone now. I'd quite like one of us to be at the front to say something first, though. He'll be better able to explain himself if someone's opened up with "Cantalas is mad as hell you tried to summon Raven and everyone got hit by chaos while we were out looking for you" and he knows what he's facing instead of someone just stalking up and yelling, "What the hell were you doing?".

His grin broadens.

And I can think of a few people who might want to put him on the spot. Some born angry, some having had anger thrust upon them. I'd have slapped him myself when Kor got hit, but I've had chance to come off the boil on the ride here.

Soon smoke trails can be seen in the distance, coming from a score or more fires. It looks as if the Giant Finger Holes are busy....

Cantalas reins in his mount to ask those nearest him

"Who are you expecting to meet here? It looks as if there are many folk ahead..."

It's still a couple of kilometres to the earth complex.

In reply to Hoskar Feather (msg # 75):

"I'll head to the front then, should help keep me awake as well." He yawns again, then calls over to Delenda, "I'm heading to the front, do you want to come with me or are you happy to stay with Amara?"

Hoskar likewise heads forward; Melock's yawn proving infectious as eyes sag after a hard night's work.

If she joins us, I'll put you between us: I imagine I'm not as popular as you are in that quarter.

And so the large group approaches the Giant Finger Holes: Bison, Rhinos, High Lamas, Sables and one lonely Ostrich....

They're eight hundred metres out when a group of Bison riders break cover from the lush vegetation surrounding the Holes, some two hundred metres from where the Rangers are.

A score of heavily armed warriors, armed with lance and shield pull up in a long line facing the weary travellers.

Breaking ranks one approaches to within hailing distance, some fifty metres away.

"I am Kolar the Blunt, beloved of Waha, killer of men and feared by chaos from here to the Block. The Red Thorns hold this place and you are not welcome. Turn back now or face the wrath of all our Clan."

He throws down his lance into the ground, leaving it to quiver in the late afternoon sunlight.

In reply to GM (msg # 79):

Melock's eyes go wide in surprise, he looks across to Emesh-Ga and then back to Kolar the Blunt, "Your joking, right?" He briefly glances at the lance, "Look, its been along day, so I'm going to be like you, blunt. We are the Wandering Rangers. We are travelling in the company of Emesh-Ga, Lord of this temple and captain in Tada's army. We are expected, now get out of our way."

"More than expected. The Earth Witch herself has requested our presence here and at this time." Amara interjected "And Lord Emesh Ga has a rendezvous with his wife. Do you really want to anger them all?"

Akala looked over at Greeshar, "What is this buffoonery?  Do they not know they are only here because the Wandering Rangers have been greening the Giant's Finger Holes?"

"I am Tarnessh Listens-To-Silence, a Follower of Sun Hawk, sworn to only speak the truth. What they say is true. We are the Wandering Rangers and travel under the guidance and in the service of the Earth and Emesh-Ga. If you continue to try and hold us up, you'll answer to him." Tarnessh said formally, although inwardly he was amused at the idea of this person trying to stop them when they were expected.

Amara took thunderfoot a few steps ahead of the others, before dismounting. "Kolar the Blunt, it is a pleasure to meet you. I am Amara Brightsky of the SkyWatchers. I am beloved of none, yet Thunderbird chose me and my brothers to watch over this land and restore the garden that once was. We have walked into the footsteps of Tada, have slain Tripanander, have defeated the wicked writher, have defeated one of your exiled shaman that walked the path of chaos, have avenged the Big Pecker clan, have cleansed this place of all that made it taboo and have restored the Wandering Rangers to life, taking the greatest among them, Lord Emesh Ga as our guardian and advisor. We are feared by no-one and yet we do great deeds. This place where there is much grazing and ample forage is the way it is thanks to us and us alone. The place you claim as your own is not. It belong to the Earth and we are its guardians. All the claims you make are of a life well lived and fought. Everything we have done, we have done in under a year. We are neither Skywatcher, nor Black Shield, nor Big Pecker, nor Prairie Thunder, nor even Red Thorn. We are united by singular purpose as Wandering rangers." Amara stepped forward to pick up the lance. "I suggest you leave now....or face the wrath of the wandering rangers and all of our allies, amongst all of the clans. If this lance be your challenge. I accept. I propose a test. Let the strongest win."

Now the mystery behind the bison spoor is answered.

Kobal nudges Black Hoof a few steps forward, shield on one arm, lance in his other hand.  "I am Kobal, son of Colnar Three Steps, sworn to the Khan of Khans, of the Wandering Rangers and the Prairie Thunder.  We are welcomed.  By Emesh-Ga, Earth Knight of Tada," he turns and nods, half to point out the shimmering Captain, and half to acknowledge him, "and the Earth Witch, whose land this is.  You see around you the early fruits of their work to green the Wastes.

"We Wandering Rangers are bison and rhino riders sworn to the service of the Earth Knight to heal what ails this land and destroy Chaos, including the disease that kills the bison.

"With us are peoples of the high llama tribe and the sable tribe.  All seek the return of Genert's Garden.  If you wish the same for the Wastes, then let us pass.  We will do no harm except to those who mean us harm."  He was unsure whether he should have mentioned the sable tribe, but at the same time was unsure whether he should've left out mention of Delenda.  She was different to how she had been when they first captured her.  Maybe even nice.

He stops, surprised as Amara dismounts.

Ignoring Amara completely after she dismounts the Red Thorn warrior answers the others instead

"We do not lay claim to the Earth Temple, but the oasis about it. No different to those who lay claim to each oasis in Prax and the Wastes.

I count ten braves before me of the Prairie Thunder Clan and their allies. We refuse you entrance to the oasis, the same for the Blue Llama people who follow in your wake.

Ten braves versus ten times their number.

It matters not who did what before.

I do not offer you greetings. I thrust my lance in the earth as warning that we will thrust our lances in you if you try to pass."

Behind the Rangers the Blue Llama and the escorted herd mill about confused to what is happening, and it's obvious to all nomads present that their newly acquired Bison make a tempting target....

Cantalas reins in close to Kobal and the others

"We are to few to contest the oasis."

"They're just doing what we'd do if in the same position. They have the Oasis. Their people are there and we are here and they are rivals of the Prairie Thunder. It is wrong to deny us access to the Temple though, but what can we do? I am ready to fight if you are."

The brave grasps his sword hilt in annoyance eyeing up the twenty braves facing them.

Striding forward the ancient spirit heads straight towards the waiting line of Bison riders. Ignoring them completely he passes through them and vanishes in to the vegetation.

"I go to see my wife. None shall stop me. The Earth Temple is sacred..."

The Red Thorns let him pass, fear showing on the faces of the younger ones amongst them, though the older ones soon move back into line, lances pointing at the Wandering Rangers.

As Emesh-Ga passes Kolar puts a horn to his mouth and blows three short blasts, which are answered not long afterwards by several similar blasts from behind him.

Akala looked witheringly at the Red Thorn's before motioning to the other Wandering Ranger's to huddle up.

When he was sure that the Red Thorn's could not hear them, Akala said, "Bribe them. Give them some Bison. They will be overjoyed. Have Hoskar make the deal. Perhaps ten head for passage in AND out. Perhaps more for a longer standing passage.  Let us put this behind us for the moment. We can return with numbers and rout them at a later time."

In reply to Akala Stoneface (msg # 91):

"Or we camp here, some of you distract them, I sneak passed them, find Ohanzee and then, if they are the same clan as we met last time,  we go and find Shade, who is a priestesses daughter, and see if she can get them to let us in. If she wont help us," his voice becomes cold, "Kidnap her and use her to bargain with."

Akala shook his head in exasperation, "Why not call upon Waha to make us invisible while we are at it?" he waved the idea away, "Too much trouble.  Too many chances for Raven to get caught and killed.  Again.  Bribe them and be done with them for now.  Have Hoskar set favorable terms, perhaps present it as sharing our bounty or some such.  Introduce this 'Shade' later to broker a longer standing access- or insist that she negotiate the terms."

The Big Brave shifted his feet then added, "But that is only my advice.  I would hear more ideas.  Including others thoughts on Melocks plan."

Having heard proceedings, and seen them not go too well so far, Hoskar takes it upon himself to try a different tack. Riding forwards towards Kolar, hands empty of weapons, he composes his face to a smile.

You're that Kolar? Well met indeed, chaos foe. For your countenance I at least thank you. Though I ride a rhino I am Hoskar of no place; an outsider; yet still I have heard your honoured name in my travels.

He slowly and carefully, with no sudden moves, openly puts his hand in a small pouch and draws out the scrimshaw on bone carving of Eiritha being hidden from the devil which he found at the Finger Holes when they freed them from their old curse. He tentatively holds it out to the Red Thorn man.

If you possess the oasis, this is yours: a symbol of hope. It and the oasis belong together. We are foes of the one foe here, are we not; and we were commanded by the earth to come and serve the temple and oasis. Can we make this happen together to the confusion of chaos? It would be hard choice to make between the command the earth makes upon us and the honour that is undoubtedly your due.

The Waha Red Thorn listens to what Hoskar has to say, the reference to chaos moving him somewhat.

"Listen lads, I hear ya, but I've got my orders and you ain't welcome here."

He points to the Eirithan womenfolk of the Blue Llamas "I'd not be stopping them from entering, if it's temple business, but youse lot will just have to fuck off, unless you want to fight us all. This is bigger than the both of us and considering that I'm old enough to be your dad i'll be blunt.

Boys are itching for a fight. We've been losing herd beasts to something we can't see and now here you lot turn up. Means they can let off a bit of steam see. That and the fact no one but us is getting to stay here. Khan's orders..."

A sack tied to Tarnessh's saddle bags begins to move violently and with a loud tear a stream of young Jackrabbits flow out and on to the ground where they run and bound on mass for the vegetation behind the Red Thorns.

With a plop their exhausted mother lands at the feet of Grumpfy where she lies there stunned, joined by a jaunty looking male who after performing a backflip bounds after the young uns.

In reply to GM (msg # 96):

He can't help smiling at the stream of baby jack rabbits, but mutters to himself, "Great, Ohanzee's not going to be happy about that."

The flow of jackrabbits causes everyone's mounts to move back and forth as they try and avoid the creatures, and the Red Thorns to cry out in surprise. As the male reaches cover he turns to raise one long paw back at those watching. Then with another somersault he vanishes.

Hoskar nods, still smiling pacifically.

I appreciate and am thankful for your candour, Kolar: you're truly well-named. I for one have no desire to fight you - whoever loses, chaos wins when the tribes fight and weaken themselves.
Don't suppose there's any hope we could stay long enough to petition your khan, is there...unless he excluded us by name, that is? Just a thought: last time we were here, Khan Well-'Ard Arry decided not to attack us when he saw what we were doing.

"Ohanzee took the form of a jackrabbit?" Amara said out loud to no-one in particular. She regretted missing the opportunity of having Emesh Ga ask those who were at the temple to come to assist. She remounted thunderfoot, but seeing hoskar was doing a good job decided to let him deal with the red thorns.

Tarnessh saw the male jackrabbit do a backflip, run off, and then disappear...and it was too much. He tried to hold it in...but then he started guffawing, and then gales of laughter burst out of his mouth at the strange sight he had just seen.

Amara gathered the others around her. "We should ride away and come back as Tada and his consort. They would not date refuse us passage then. The Earth temple itself would be compelled to help us."

Hoskar sighs at the impassive lack of response; still smiling but his mien is now more rueful.

I guess that's how it is, then. He shrugs, and his smile relaxes a little. Believe it or not as you choose, Kolar, but you've increased my respect for your name today.

Inclining his head graciously but not with subservience, he retreats to the Rangers' group.

Tarnessh nodded. "That sounds like a good plan. We could ask Emesh-Ga to help as well, if he agrees to it."

Works for me too. Sad really: thought I had enough of Kolar's ear for a moment back there, but it wasn't to be.

He grins his lopsided grin looking back and forth between Melock and Tarnessh. I'd keep an eye on our Raven here, Tarnessh - last time we did something like this all sorts of merry pranks resulted.

He smiles cheekily back at Hoskar, "That wasn't until the banquet in the evening." He yawns theatrically, "besides, I'm too knackered to even think about causing anymore problems. Anyway, I've got my hands full looking after Delenda. Speaking of which, duty calls." He rides over to Delenda, "When we return as Tada and his consort, would you like my company or would you prefer Amara's?"

"I'm not sure Raven...what was all that with the Jackrabbits?"

Kolar has indeed clammed up, and after taking back his lance he sits impassively with it across his legs as he watches and waits...

Several more Red Thorn braves come  out of the vegetation, these ones are different though.

With skin coloured red, these lightly armoured and near naked warriors sit atop similarly coloured Bison. Both man and animal are covered with fetishes and instead of swords vicious looking barbed clubs are carried.

They stop and watch the goings on, keeping separate from those already there.

He shrugs his shoulders, "I don't know, maybe its because of something that Ohanzee did last night. Though I admit the male was a bit weird, Amara could be right." he puts his hand over his mouth a look of shock on his face, "Did I just say that out loud," he laughs, "but it can't be as Greeshar and Whispers from the Sky saw him camped out yesterday. It is very strange."

Kobal nods in agreement with the plan.  "I can't think of any other way through these Red Thorns.  Besides charging.  I thought mentioning the disease spirit that killed the bison might give us a means to negotiate with them.  They have a problem.  Kolar himself acknowledged it, but he seemed to ignore me when I mentioned it."



He rides over to Sand Fox and Nixa to speak to them.  "Who are these braves, who wear red and bear thorns?"

Amara looked knowledgeably at the red thorn braves milling around while trying to look threatening. "You only really need to look to see who they are. Lightly armoured, coated with so many fetishes they almost shine like the sun and from the looks of things they are their own subset feared amongst the rest of the clan. They almost have to be Storm Bull." Amara frowned "Or perhaps the red thorns are trying to make their own wandering rangers and consign our name to dust."

Kobal nods in acknowledgment of Amara's explanation, and turns to look at the new braves.  They certainly have the fanatical appearance.  "It makes sense that they could be Storm Bulls.  But that they choose to become Red Thorns in particular is interesting.  I was wondering if it might mean something else.  If that's true, then the fact that they keep apart from the other braves might give us another means to negotiate with the clan."

Henal stays quiet through the exchange with Kolar glowering at the Red Thorns till the rabbits explode out of the saddle bag. A look of surprise passes over his face at Amara dismouting.

"That buck rabbit definitely has the trickster in him"

As the braves covered in red emerge he looks at Nixa and Sand Fox with a questioning look

"They are our Shaman's guard and apprentices" replies Nixa.

"Do you want us to go into the camp and speak to our family?" adds his brother Sand Fox.

Akala calmly observed the new Red Red Thorns emerge.

He was obviously unimpressed.

The Big Brave looked over at Greeshar and whispered something, followed by a loud bark of laughter.

His manner remained relaxed, and he only watched the Red Thorns, not showing any aggressive tendencies.

To the others he said simply, "So we go and come back later?"

His manner was casual, and he removed the ever-present Zana root only to speak, replacing it and chewing immediately.

Still saddened by their reception, Hoskar furrows his brow, unsure. For my part, I'd like to see you two brave and honourable Rangers in our ceremony so your whole tribe can all see we stand united for what's best in them too; but I guess...what do you think your family would say?

And you, Delenda he adds with a shy smile that's new - she spoke in a conversation I was part of - face up to your deeds, man - as good a chance as any. What will you do? I for one would rather see you a part of the greening than on the outside of this. I'm not as you first saw me. Shame teaches much, grim lesson though it is, and I would acknowledge your worth.

He takes a deep breath; half-bracing hiself for a stinging retort he hopes will not come yet condignly fears.

Either way, my path is clear. I must be Issaries again: herald of the good word in the train of Tada-khan.

Time to prepare he muses, seeking something to serve as with which to inscribe himself with the runes of harmony and the god's own rune as well as a square for the earth.

Although accessible to questions, he'll spend some time later removing armour down to his leathers to better echo the deity; and in silent obeisance before the clay statue that is the mark of his cult. He can be seen on several occasions making the runes with gestures of his hands in the air.

"Hmmmf" is the only reply Akala gets from Greeshar who as they all begin to withdraw asks the question that needs to be asked

"Who will be Tada?"

Partially to Hoskar, partially to the rest of the group, Akala ventured, "...Uhhhhh...and what should I do?  What role do I play in this?"

He seemed a bit awkward, probably because the role of Tada was new to him.

"I think I have no real choice in the matter, so I shall follow in your wake. Who is to be Tada's consort?" answers the Sable rider.

The Wandering Rangers and their allies withdraw out of view of the watching Red Thorns so as to prepare for the coming ritual. A sense of excitement begins to replace the earlier feeling of fear amongst the small group of Blue Llamas, who having expected a warmer welcome were shocked by their reception.

Aileen Serpent Walker accepts the offer of being Tada's consort and waits to see who will stand as Tada.

"Well, who has not become Tada before? Twas I when last we were here, with Amara as my consort...when Raven mucked it all up, but still..."

Salen looked around him at his fellow Rangers, his memory clouded. It seemed like such a long time ago.

He smiles as he remembers the fun he had that day, "That was a good day.." He catches himself and coughs, "What I mean is..." he thinks quickly, "the arriving ceremony went well" He quickly glances round at the others, "I don't think I'm worthy enough to be Tada. For what its worth, I think Akala should be Tada."
He turns to answer Delenda, "I think this time the honour of that roll goes to Aileen Serpent Walker. If, after we have been to Pavis, you decide that your path joins ours, maybe next time we visit you can be Tada's consort."

"I believe I was Tada last when we fought the Basmoli, so perhaps someone else should get the chance. That kind of power can become addictive, after all."

In reply to Melock (msg # 126):

Looking up from unstrapping a greave, Hoskar nods. I agree...mostly. Especially about the consort. Not sure it might not be your turn as Tada though, Melock - we might need all the cunning at the reins that we can muster.

Abstractedly, he looks down again; wrestling with a recalcitrant buckle.

Amara caught Melocks smile and hissed with anger again. "Akala should be Tada. He's by far the most physically imposing and as Greeshar said will be ranger as soon as we can arrange the ceremony when we arrive...and he's travelled with the blue llama who might be happier with someone they know as the Consorts husband."

Eventually it is decided that Akala will be Tada, despite Greeshar voicing his concerns. Mounts are readied, runes painted and adornments added to armour and weapons.

The Blue Llamas mount an honour guard on the Bison herd, deciding that it will be safer if everyone goes in at once, claiming patronage from the Earth Temple as their protection.

Violence is expected and prayers go up to the spirits of war and much magic is prepared just in case.

Once everyone is ready, word comes back from Emesh-Ga alerting them to the fact that they are expected and have the full support of the Earth Witch and the Temple guards whom ever they may be...

Eirithan and Help Woman worshippers plan to lead the procession, with songs and music, followed by the Wandering Rangers, Tada and his bride and then the rest.

At the last moment the remaining Agimori arrive, silent as ever, to form up around Akala and Aileen.

Tada and his Consort a daughter of Genert.

Feeling edgy in his lighter armour, but knowing his chance of playing the herald is much improved the closer his mien is to that of the god, Hoskar takes a deep breath.
At least I can't leave the shield behind - that's Ranger stuff; and the sword's sentimental goods.

Hail, Tada; Kahn of the clans he intones. Summoned by the earth, we follow you to peace or war. If the need is for talking, the good words will be here for you to command.

Amara joined the guard around Akala and Aileen, deciding Tada should be guarded by his chosen warriors. The Wandering Rangers. Brandishing her shield and lance, she bowed gracefully to Tada. "Lord Tada, your chosen warriors stand at your side to keep you and the Consort safe from harm. Lord Emesh Ga awaits and the Earth Witch to attend you. Summoned by the Earth, we follow you to peace or war. If the need is for violence, our weapons stand ready for your command."

Tarnessh stepped forward with knots of counting and other scholarly accoutrements among the Praxians, and bowed to Tada next, deciding that it made sense for the Lord of the Green to also have advisers and Lawspeakers, as Khans do today. "Lord Tada, your Lawspeakers accompany you. When unrest or strife threatens to tear the clan apart, your Lawspeakers will repeat your wisdom and bring unity, harmony, and good advice to you and those under you. If the need is for wisdom, we dedicate our memories to the wise words you have shared with us."

Before he approaches Tada, Melock speaks quietly to Delenda, "You are a warrior, your place is with us guarding Tada. Will you join us?" He unhooks his copper axe, "If you do, you can borrow this." He grins at her, "I will want it back though."
He then approaches Tada, "Lord Tada, your Raven stands ready to entertain you and your followers after a hard days travel. Summoned by the Earth, we follow you to peace or war. If the need is for trickery or wit, I stand ready to serve."
He bows and steps away. If Delenda has joined them he gently nudges her, "Your turn."

Kobal nods in understanding, as he looks back at the painted braves.  Not what I expected, but it makes sense.  And not a group to be challenged.  At this time.



"There's no need for that.  But if you'd like to spend time with your family, you're free do so.  Just make sure you're ready to join us at the Earth Temple."




Interesting, notes Kobal, that others now see Delenda as a potential companion, rather than a captive.  Or... is it that he's forgotten about Wild Pastures and now only has eyes for Delenda, haha?



Kobal was going to suggest either Akala or Amara - the former the latest member of the Rangers, though not yet formally, the latter the most recent bearer of the helmet of Emesh-Ga, and so most often in touch with the Earth in recent times.

But with Amara renouncing the role this time, he knew it should be Akala.  Whomever became Tada should have no hesitation or doubt in their heart.

As the Rangers make their preparations, Kobal goes to his bison and takes down the great sword, wrapped in skins, that is strapped to the back of Black Hoof.  Inscribed with runes of death and truth in honour of Humakt, as well as writing alien to Kobal, it is an imposing weapon.  He takes the great death rune to Tada and offers it solemnly with both hands.  "I was going to give this to you at the Earth Temple, but now seems the best time.  Strike true.  Strike hard."

He says to the others, "In exchange for that great sword, which we took from that powerful broo, I'll take its shield instead, which no one has yet claimed."

When the procession lines up, Kobal mounts Black Hoof and rides to the Rangers' position behind the Blue Llama women, and waits for the signal from Tada before setting off back towards the oasis and the Earth Temple, Earth shield on his left, heavy staff held proudly before him, proclaiming Tada's arrival.

"Thank you Melock. I accept your trust, but my place is not with Tada...I will guard the women of the Earth."

And she rides forward to join the Eirithans at the fore of the procession, taking her place at their head.

As the magic of the event begins to take hold she glows with a copper hue. A daughter of the Earth, Axe sister and fierce protector...

Grim and terrible, daring all to oppose her.

Nixa and Sand Fox add their respects to Tada and take their place amongst the honour guard and then all turn to look to Tada himself...

Bedecked in a garland of freshly picked leaves, painted in runes and gifted with weapons, armour and magic he is a sight to behold.

Thundercloud roars with pride.

Bright Treasure gets ready to vanish, leaving the western sky blood red, and with this as a background the horns and drums begin to beat and blow from deep within the earth.

And soon enough from the oasis comes the sound of a procession, the sweet noise of cymbals and women singing filling the evening air.

Marking their passage are flocks of brightly coloured birds which burst from the canopy adding their own beautiful song to the event.

Those of the Earth Complex have come to greet their Lord....

Akala had been both proud and humbled to be selected to be Tada this day.

He took the items offered by the others with humility and gratitude, each item or garment causing Akala to stand a little bit taller, his presence a bit more grand.

Finally, he stood up upon Thundercloud's back, the combined heights of the two huge beings making Tada's grandeur visually stunning, augmented by the Basmoli cloak snapping in the wind like some griffin's wing taking flight.

Holding the Greatsword bestowed by Kobal even higher in the air with one hand, he began to speak.

"Greetings all," Akala-Tada began, "My court is without equal!  True as the Sun Hawk!  Wise as the Condor!  Clever as The Raven!  Brave as the Thunderbird!  Tonight, we of every feather, made one- we dine with Emesh-Ga!"

Akala-Tada roared the last name, attempting to inject all of his nervous energy into the name; into the action.

"On this night, we march in the light of the righteous!  We march toward the greening of the plains!  We march towards the unification of all the tribes!  Let none stand in the way of Tada and his company, for with us rides the Strength- the Heart- the Spirit of Prax!!!"

With the last, he pumped the giant, gleaming bronze Greatsword again in the air, then dropped onto Thundercloud's back, nudging the huge beast forward at a strong, controlled pace.

At Tada's command, his words still ringing across the wastes, the procession gets underway. As they near the edge of the Oasis they see the line of Red Thorns has grown to twice it's size and as they spy the approaching nomads a loud grumble ripples along their line.

It's noisy this evening ,what with the sounds of Tada's womenfolk singing and banging drums in time with the cymbals, flutes and horns coming from those approaching from the Earth Complex...

Lights appear, flickering balls of flame that soon break free of the verdant flora of the oasis. They're held by an honour guard of tall High Llama women....Axe sisters....The very ones who had been here the last time the Ranger had called. They shout boldly at the Red Thorns to move aside, as long handled axes are thrust up into the air.

It's not them that scatter the line of Bison warriors, but it is Emesh-Ga near fully manifested, riding atop a wave of churning earth, caused by something tunnelling just beneath the surface.

Gadesha!

Immediately behind walks the earth witch and her attendants, a score of assorted priestesses, initiates and Eirithan elders from across the spectrum of Praxian nations. By her side can be seen Ashfoot Earth Healer, the Impala priestess, Serpent Tamer priestess of the Blue Llama clan and finally Brinna, Salen's aunt and Red Thorn Priestess.

The Red Thorn's look unsure of what to do, but they know that they cannot attack the Priestesses and defeat shows on their faces as their own Priestess puts up a hand warning them off.

The front of Tada's procession meets up with the greeting party of Emesh-Ga, splitting and mingling to shouts of joy and triumph as the churned up earth comes to a stop and gently deposits the Earth Knight on the ground...

The Massive spirit kneels before his lord to greet him in his deep bass voice. It sounds like thunder rolling across the Wastes...

"My Lord I welcome you back. Our home is your home, my people are your people."

Then turning to his consort he continues

"Daughter of my ruler, the keeper of our lands I welcome you to with love in my heart. I serve your father without thought and therefore I serve you too..."

Then standing he turns and with open arms invites Tada and his companions in to the Oasis.

The Earth Witch also comes forward

"Greetings mighty Tada I worship you in the name of those that walk the land today. We open our hearts and our home to you."

Then turning to Kobal she continues

"And you too Wandering Rangers, guardians of your lord and of the the land. Come forward in safety, knowing that we offer you protection within the earth now and for always..."

Kobal waits for Tada to address Emesh-Ga and the Earth Witch, before he responds, still astride Black Hoof, bowing his head and bending his arm (still bearing his staff) to place his fist over his heart.

"Wise One, we return as we pledged.  Even though we were bound to do so by duty, we would have done so freely, to Honour the Earth, Emesh-Ga and his Lord Tada.  To restore the land.

"We are happy to see that the greening has already commenced.  And we Rangers have grown with the seasons.  Soon we will add again to our numbers."

He turns and extends his arm, to stretch across first the gathered Red Thorns and then the Blue Llamas.  "Word has spread too, of the rebirth of the land.

"Command us Wandering Rangers now, or later, as it please you, on how we may serve."

Following behind and to the right of Tada, Melock is enjoying the moment and has a big smile on his face, though it starts to fade when he see's the High Llama axe sisters, I hope they give second chances. He's just starting to relax again, when he see's Gadesha, Wonderful, she can leave the temple. I better be on my best behaviour. He starts to shake, but with the help of a few deep breaths, he manages to stop them.

Akala-Tada inclined his head respectfully to Emesh-Ga, "It is good to be back.  It is good to see our work bearing fruit," Akala-Tada looked around at the people and the new green surrounding them and said with a small smile, "In this case, quite literally."

The Tada-Brave returned to his more formal affect, adding while nodding toward the various tribes now in attendance, "The Green grows strong, and the people, too, grow strong."



Akala-Tada inclined his head towards the woman as well, "You honor us, Earth Witch, and you have our gratitude for your hospitality.  We greet you with open arms, open minds, and open hearts as well.  We are glad to have the opportunity to work and plan once again to bring forth the full glory of the Earth, The Gods, and the Tribes of Prax."

Akala-Tada could feel the mantle of Tada upon him.  His voice held a greater command, and his words felt more sure, more solid.  Even his coloring- skin and hair and eyes- usually more bronze, had taken on a bit more red and an extra luster.

His coloring had deepened from it's natural dusky bronze to a slightly shimmering copper tone.  His eyes, skin and hair all shone with a bright, other-worldly, soft brilliance.  The Basmoli cloak and bronze Greatsword only served to highlight both the coloring and the change that had come over Akala of the Sky Watcher clan, and transformed the man into Akala-Tada- something else entirely.

Tarnessh, playing the role of advisor and Lawspeaker to Tada/Akala stood to the side and slightly behind Tada, although a bit in front of the honour guards, stayed respectfully silent until his lord asked him for advice. He did not have the freedom of a follower of Raven to simply say whatever came to their minds, although sometimes their ability to speak truth to power was something that he envied.

Hoskar-Issaries is silent...for once...tracing the three strokes of harmony with fingertips on his mount's back while bowing low; both to Khan Akala-Tada and his Consort, and to the receiving Earth Witch.

It is the time for khans and their ways, not for trade in honeyed words.

Henal stays back in the honour guard bowing to the Earth Witch and Emesh-Ga, but stays silent.

The Earth Witch smiles at Kobal and extends her arm towards the Giant Finger Holes

"First make your way to the Giant Finger Holes. You will be safe there. No one will dare attack you whilst under our protection. They did not know who they faced....Tomorrow is Eiritha's High Holy day and after that you shall begin your service to me."

She includes the other Rangers in this, and it is easy to see that she is pleased that everyone has turned up.




"Ah Tada Lord. It is good to see you riding a rhino. It is most fitting."

She bows low and indicates that he should follow Emesh-Ga in to the Oasis.

"Please follow me great Tada...."

And Emesh-Ga leads the way, heading back under the new growth, which reminds those who have visited the earth Temple before, of the carvings on the tunnel walls below.

Looking down as they ride, all can see in the light of the many torches that flowers have appeared where Gadesha ploughed the earth with her passage.

Angry rumbles come from the watching Red Thorn warriors, but they have been joined by women and children of their clan who now line the way, watching the new comers with awe, for despite the rivalries they can not deny the great magic that is going on and the fact that, here at any rate, the land is how it once was...

Tada draws their attention, for he eclipses even the ancient Earth Knight who walks beside him in his glory, and his consort glows with an otherworldly hero light too, drawing strength from the ground beneath her and the power of Eiritha who's holy day is nearly upon them...

Akala viewed the procession with awe.  The flowers that sprung up in Gadesha's wake were astonishing.  The Earth Witch was supernatural in her grace, and that grace was one of the most beautiful things Akala had seen in all his life.  Emesh-Ga himself in his more corporeal form was simply incredible.

Akala felt another wave of humbleness wash over him like a warm summer wind. He had not yet been sworn officially into the Wandering Rangers, and yet he had been entrusted to walk in these honored steps, in this honored place.

Akala-Tada, however, felt his power- it emanated from the ground, from the sky, from the clouds on the breeze, from the gathering tribes, and from the strength of his advisors, consort, and court that accompanied him.

"We follow where your council leads, Honored Emesh-Ga," he gazed at the gathering faces with the intensity of purpose, adding, "I would have my court introduce themselves, so that you would know my mind by those I trust with my love."

He gestured to his court as introduction.

Amara's eyes swept those present always vigilant. Watching for those who might interrupt Lord Tada or the Consort. She was sure that she could almost feel some hostile intent from the Red Thorn shaman followers. A strong gaze in their direction told them that Amara was watching and wary of them. She smiled a greeting to the Earth Witch. It had been a long time since she'd talked to the earth Witch, though she suspected, she'd still be found wanting by her.

Amara stepped in line, clearing the way for Tada and the consort, allowing the trusted inner circle the ability to pass, but keeping those who might threated and the crowd from pressing in on them. Her goal was to make sure Tada and the Consort were safe.

Emesh-Ga stops and turns to take in the assembled courtiers "I am honoured my Lord. Perhaps this can be done later. We are some what pressured at the moment."

It's not a long distance through the Oasis but it seems further, most likely due to the magic of the ceremony and proximity of the High Holy day.

On two occasions there are scuffles and attempted attacks, but each time they are pushed back or handled well by those guarding the long line of arrivals. Half hearted at best they are a reminder of the difficult path they now tread.

The Holes are at last reached, the space about them a clearing in what looks to be a newly formed wood. There are no Red Thorns camped here, though camp fires and observers can be seen along it's circumference.

Nestled between large piles of worked rock: gargantuan building blocks from when this was once a mighty palace, the five holes are easily spotted thanks to the fires lit far below.

It's not hard to see where they got their names, as it indeed looks like a giant hand has pushed long fingers deep in to the Red Earth.

There's tents here too, in the style of each of the five Nations of Prax and their occupants stand before them to greet the new arrivals. Herd beasts bleat, moo and bellow from nearby corrals and it is to here that the Rangers' and Blue Llamas' herd beasts are directed.

"Your animals will be safe" announces an impala brave, his markings those of the Thunder clan.

Folk begin to dismount glad to be within the boundaries of the temple and safety, and the magic of the ceremony dims somewhat, though those with roles are still playing their part.

As Tarnessh dismounts, he can't resist making a very fast rude gesture to the Red Thorns who had blocked their path into the Finger Holes and tried to stop them from being able to complete their agreed-upon tasks.

"Ignore them Tarnessh, as much as you wish to show your feelings. They do not realise what we have done, cannot appreciate the size of our task or of our accomplishments. It will take time."

Salen was most pleased to be back at the Giant Finger Holes, another circle of the sands completed and a step along the path of their mission completed. He took time now to greet the Earth Witch, Noita, delighted to see her again. It was different here now, so very different from when they had first come here, when they had fought and slain the renegade Red Thorn Shaman.

It was glorious now.

Nixa and Sand Fox rein in their Bisons next to Salen, both braves looking relieved that they'd made it with little bother.

Amara breathed a sigh of relief when they made it through the blockade. That was going to be a bigger issue every time they made it back to the Giants Fingers Holes unless they broke the Red Thorns of that habit now. She whispered some suggestions to Akala-Tada before moving away from him. He needed to deal with the well wishers and priesthood here. Tada was here it would be best to deal with some matters while he was still with them.

Amara pegged out Thunderfoot where the sable brave told her and looked around stunned at the large numbers of people who'd flocked to the Temple. Her face broadened into smile and a look of wonder and awe as she saw who and what the restoration of the garden had started. "It has begun, Emesh Ga. What a wonderful thing we have started. The wandering rangers thank you for your advice and counsel that has brought us here and allowed us to witness this new beginning. Your journey has ended with me. I shall return you to Kobal. You have taught me much of the ways of the copper men and the rangers that came before us. Your names will live on through us." undoing the straps that held it to her head, Amara took the helmet off. Moving towards Kobal she held out the helmet for him. "Lord Emesh Ga waits to provide you counsel and wisdom Kobal. It is a time for his words and counsel to be given to you."

Even focused as he was on the wondrous entrance of Tada, Kobal felt an underlying tension as the procession made its way through the oasis, the enmity of the Red Thorns apparent.

Now they are surrounded by that bison clan, but the calm of the impala brave who now addresses them (and of the others who have come to the Temple) is re-assuring.  Kobal thanks the brave and introduces himself and the rest of the Rangers.

The Earth Witch had said that their service would start the day after tomorrow.  So for now it seemed they'd have some time to relax.

But a thought comes to him: the Red Thorns claim the oasis, but as the greening radiates from the Giants Finger Holes, the oasis will grow outwards.  One the one hand, eventually it'll grow larger than the Red Thorns can control.  But in the meantime, they will claim more and more land.  Something will have to be done about this.



"Thank you, Amara."  Kobal takes off the spare cuirboilli helmet he'd been wearing in the meantime and drops it to the ground for the moment, so that he can accept the Helmet of Emesh-Ga with both hands with proper ceremony.  How had she known I was going to ask for the helmet back at the Giants Finger Holes?  "Thank you for bearing the helm, and being our intermediary to the Captain.  After a while without the helm, I had begun to miss the words of Emesh-Ga.  It will be a comfort to hear them once again."

Apart from those who took part in the procession, some of whom are recognised by those who were here last time, there is perhaps a score of other folk standing about the tents and greeting the Rangers and their friends.

Most certainly guards and attendants of the Priestesses who seem to have set up home here.

For those who are new it takes no time to approach the largest of the five holes, fifty metres deep and some forty five metres wide. Standing on it's edge, they can see that below is a scum covered lake with a small island in it. The shore is covered by trees both old and new, and despite being told that there are entrances to the depths in the cliff walls, it is impossible to see them because of the thick canopy. On the southern end of the lake there is a wide alcove in the cliff wall, the stone having been worked by hand. It's part of the ancient complex, the wide stairs leading down to it are now long gone.

Also in evidence are many holes lining the eastern walls, home to a dozen or so Rock Lizards.

Two of the other Giant Finger Holes are empty, shallow pits, whilst the remaining two both hold small lakes, with tunnels leading to the main cavern. It is one of these latter holes that visitors can descend down a steep slope and access the caverns and complex below.

When none of the Babeester Gor show any interest in him, Melock breaths a sigh of relief as he tethers Stinky with the rest of the mounts. That's a lot of mounts that will need watering. When he see's Tarnessh's gesture he smiles and walks over to him, "Are you sure you don't have a bit of Raven in you brother." Out of habit he quickly looks round for Delenda, expecting her to be with the other Babeester Gor, but he isn't too worried if he cant see her.

Tarnessh walked in with the others, marvelling at all the green that had just sprouted in less then a year's time. It was more then he had ever seen before, and from what he had gathered, it was just starting.

Amara's work was done. Now they were at the complex she had nothing more to do. They'd made it safely to the Giants Finger Holes. A task that might have seemed impossible only a short time ago. Missing some of their number for sure, but with more present than the circumstances might have dictated.

She wondered what the Earth Witch might have in store for the Rangers, in the time they'd agreed to serve. Whatever it was, she was sure it would be worth it for the blessings the Earth might put upon them and for how it might expand the garden. She idly wondered what Aileen and Cantelas thought of it. She hoped they were as entranced as she was when she first arrived.

Amara wondered how she might approach the Delenda subject with the Earth Witch. She asked one of the attendants if she might have a moment of the Earth Witches time at some point in the future.

Kobal approaches the other Wandering Rangers.  "Now that we have arrived, should we hold a ceremony for Akala to join the Rangers?  Or wait until our service to the Earth Witch is over?  And what do we do with Delenda?  Invite her to join us too...?"

Amara voiced an opinion "I would take any here that wish to join our number and the sooner the better....but I think we should first wait until Akala's obligations as Tada have been completed...and Delenda has other obligations she may need to figure out before joining our number...if indeed that's something she wishes to do."

In reply to Amara Brightsky (msg # 164):

Melock chuckles, "You'd refuse me, if I wasn't already a ranger. I bet you've even asked Emesh-Ga if there's away to kick someone out." He has a smile on his face, and its obvious that he's not bothered about it.
"As for Delenda, if she joins us before we get her to Pavis, then we don't get those sables."

Amara scowled at Melock "You really don't know me or anything about me Melock. I've never raised any such discussion nor even thought it. You are a ranger and that is that. That you choose self indulgence as opposed to helping others is your own problem. It has nothing to do with the rangers. I care not for sables when we could have more rangers. If we look after the Garden it will look after us. Delenda would be a valuable addition to our number and you know it."

In reply to Amara Brightsky (msg # 166):

He takes a slight step back, the smile gone from his face, "Didn't mean anything by it. I thought you'd be in a better mood now that we are here. I didn't mean we don't let her join, we just wait until we have the sables as well." He shrugs his shoulders, "After telling me I don't know you, you then assume you know my mind." He smiles again, "Even I don't know my mind about her."

Henal looks around in wonder at the amount of green and the depths of the Giant Finger Holes, he asks the closest of the Rangers who came before How much has it changed. I'm not used to so much green away from the banks of the serpents.

"When we arrived here this place was taboo and the ground as barren as anywhere else in the Wastelands. The shaman brought with him death and angry spirits. Here there is enough for all our mounts to graze on. There is water and more. This place will soon return to its former glory." Amara winced "This place has transformed with the Earth Witch remaining here. The ground feels fertile under our feet." she answered Henal. She watched Melock warily, saying nothing. She was sure the others saw value in Akala, Delenda might not have won the others over just yet. Amara wondered what might have to be done to free her of her current obligations.

"So," says Kobal, "now that we are here at the Finger Holes, where is Ohanzee?  Greeshar and Whispers from the Sky came across him before we did."  He looks around for any sign of the short rhino brave.  Or rabbits.

Tears of joy standing on his cheeks for the green that has come since the Rangers last saw this place, Hoskar has been in no condition to join the debate fully, but as usual looks helplessly between Amara amd Melock, trying again to sense how to bridge between their parallel lines.

The earth's day is a good day for us he hazards at last. Akala-Tada should take vows without delay, I'd say; and if Delenda wishes to join us I'd support that too. I know we lose Sables as a prize, but we may gain more from allies than from booty. He glances round nervously, surprised to hear his own words about a Sable rider and unsure of what the reaction might be to his change of heart.

I would also honour Kolar the Blunt if I knew how. He discharged his duty to his khan well and held his hand from bloodshed in that service. A good man, I'd reckon.

At Kobal's latest words, he shakes his head vigorously to clear his mind and knock away the misting moisture from his eyes. I'd quite like to know where Ohanzee is too: still want to know what in the gods' name happened out there.

In reply to Hoskar Feather (msg # 171):

When he see's Hoskar concerned look, he walks over to him, "Don't worry about me and red. Its the same old comments, nothing new or hurtful" He pretends to be shocked at Hoskars thoughts about Delenda, "What changed your mind? Too much time thinking in the dark last night?" He yawns a couple of times, "I'm sure Ohanzee is fine, I mean he's a Raven, he isn't dumb enough to get captured..." he pauses, "..erm, well not twice in such a short length of time"

In reply to Melock (msg # 172):

Smiling thinly, Hoskar takes a deep breath. I'll have to explain myself sometime, and now's as good as any.

What changed my mind? Well you're right in a way - a lot of thinking from the ambush onwards. You'll neither of you thank me for this, I imagine; but you and Amara usually seem to have hold of two ends of the same truth and when both of you agree and my conscience says I've done something revolting as well, what choice does an honest man have left?

He sighs.

Time to let hate slip away through my fingers.

In reply to Hoskar Feather (msg # 173):

A worried look crosses his face, "Could you avoid using the 'T' word and me in the same breath." He pats him on the shoulder and smiles, "Lets hope Delenda is as forgiving as you. Once we've finished here, we can go find out"

Akala-Tada had ridden into the Giant's Finger Hole's experiencing an odd, almost deja-vu like feeling.

The sights were spectacular, and yet Tada's presence upon the journey made for type of echo, as if everything had been seen before, perhaps in a dream.

When they finally stopped, Akala-Tada again raised his voice, magically enhancing it to reach the ears and hearts of all that were allies, "On this day, let it be said that these are sacred grounds for all the Tribes of Prax, and that all Tribes shall have free access at all times, so that the greening may continue to grow stronger, and all Prax might thrive."

Without pause, so as to leave no space for murmurs of decent, Akala-Tada continued, "And let it also be said that the Red Thorns, by right of first claim, have the right to settle the Oasis, and therefore serve as most honored defenders of the Earth Temple.  This honor shall grant them the rights and privilege to petition any clan or tribe for aid in defending this temple and this oasis.  This is a great and mighty boon!  It elevates the Red Thorn's, and so too does it elevate their responsibility to the people of Prax!"

Akala-Tada turned to the Red Thorns addressing those present directly, "If you choose to stay here and hold this oasis, say so now, and become one with the earth.  If you do not wish this boon, say so, and let another clan accept this responsibility with this oasis."

He continued, "I would share with you three truths of this boon: First- If you want to do your duty, you should do more than just that. You are being entrusted with protecting the temple, the greening, and Prax.  This means you must treat from a place of love with all other tribes.  You must be strong when threatened, but open handed with those that come in peace, or to serve the Temple.  And you must be wise enough to know the difference."

"Second- No matter how tall the mountain, it can not block out the sun.  The Red Thorns will grow powerful with this boon.  You must always remember, the Red Thorns and all of the Tribes are in service to the Temple as it can then serve us.  Not the other way around.  We are- none of us- so great as to eclipse the greatness of the Earth Temple and what it is doing for Prax.  We are- all of us- the mountain."

"Third, and finally- Hold fast to patience, a thing which has seen us to the ground we now stand upon.  The road ahead is a long one, with many challenges to overcome.  With the steady march like that of a nomad across the plains, we shall reach our destination together."

With the last statement, Akala-Tada gave the Red Thorns a reserved salute.

Next, he acknowledged out loud once again all of his advisors and court, giving them honor while doing so.

He then returned his attention to Emesh-Ga and the Earth Witch, again expressing his gratitude for the greeting and hospitality, genuflected appropriately where needed, and, finally, slipped off his other-worldy mantle to become simply Akala once more.

He returned the Basmoli cloak to Tarnesh, and asked Kobal if he wanted the Greatsword back as well, noting that he was unfamiliar with the weapon.  It was a fine thing however, and Akala would not refuse it's giving.

He looked a bit spent, the effects of the poisoning returning, and his coloring returned to its normal bronze hue.

Hoskar winks sleepily. From an Issaries it's a compliment, you know; but the point is well taken. Maybe we can say your end's a bit frayed.

Silence greets Akala Tada's proclamation and those Red Thorns watching from the dense vegetation melt back into the darkness, returning to their camp....

An answer could only come from their Khan.

The Earth Witch welcomes each Ranger in turn and then approaches the Blue Llama folk who greet her with great reverence, though this is over shadowed by the respect and love they show to their own priestess and her retinue.

Tents are put up and food distributed, and the Wandering Rangers find themselves momentarily alone around a fire, waited on by three Impala women from the Thunder Clan, the only clan amongst their vast numbers who worship the spirits of Storm. Bald and small in stature, the pygmy women are very obviously strong willed and proud, despite having to serve the Bison and Rhino riders. Apart from their heads their bodies are dyed in swirling blue patterns reminiscent of clouds.

Emesh-Ga spends a long moment conversing with Kobal after thanking Amara for bearing his helmet for so long. Tehn he excuses himself to return below ground to spend time with his wife Gadesha, whose loud rumblings every now and again can be heard from deep within the earth.

Of Delenda there is no sign, nor is there of the Axe sisters who seem to now permanently guard the Complex below. Asking around the sable rider was seen accompanying the fearsome warriors below...

When he hears that Delenda has entered the temple with the Axe Sisters, he sighs, "Do you want to find her tonight and talk to her Hoskar?" He chews a bit of well cooked meat, "I think she'll be busy tomorrow guarding the temple. I don't know much other than scary rumors about the Axe Sisters, but I know enough not to upset them again." He has a good swig of kumiss and passes the skin to Hoskar, "I wonder what the Earth Witch has planned for our time with her?"

Kobal frowns as he hears these words, though he tries to hide it from showing while he is part of the procession.



Kobal's frown deepens.

Waha's beard!  Didn't anyone tell Akala of the rivalry between the Prairie Thunder and the Red Thorns?!  Now we have to ride back and tell our clan that one of the Sky Watchers has granted this land to our rivals?!




Kobal declines the offered sword.  "No, I meant what I said earlier.  I planned to give you the sword after you formally become one of the Wandering Rangers.  But that was the right time to give it to you."  He smiles, though he doesn't speak with as much mirth as he might have earlier.



"Honour him?  No!"  There'd been too many nice things said about Red Thorns for one day.  "But if Akala's gift does not placate them, I had thought that trying to find the disease spirit affecting their bison might have helped."  Hoskar's too soft.  Probably how he got taken in by Krakka Rumble in the first place.

Akala Thanked Kobal for the sword, making a mental note of finding someone who could define the sword's properties.

Reading the man's uncomfortable feeling with the deal proposed, Akala attempted to make the gambit more clear.

In a low voice that only the Wanderer's could hear, he said, "The proposal is a two edged sword.  It forces the Red thorns to: First: Decide some of their people at least will settle.  As in no longer be nomads.  Second: They must always allow passage to the temple and defend it.  As well as control the traffic to and from it.  That is a lot of man power and energy.  And essentially makes the Red Thorns allies by the binding of themselves to protect and work for the same thing that we do.

And, in a non communicated subtext, they would be responsible- and potentially held accountable- should anything befall the temple or those within.  Such work deserves praise, respect and support from the tribes...but it also neutralizes any threat; the Red Thorns will have purpose outside of the other clans...a purpose that is also a service.  They will no longer be in opposition to them."

Akala shrugged, "At least that was the design."

Tarnessh chuckled. "Very clever, Akala. Also, if they refuse, they'll need to give up the claim to the oasis." He said.

Taking a nervous swig from Melock's kumiss-skin, Hoskar winces...then tries to cover it up.
Me and the axe sisters? At night? Oh my.

Maybe I'll let the thought I'm not all bad settle in first. That and tonight I intend to sleep and sleep: it's been too long since we all rested.

He raises an eyebrow at Kobal's disagreement over Kolar, but raises no further argument. Maybe it's a clan thing. Been away a long time.

Amara smiled at Akalas suggestion for the red thorns. "It was a smart request, and you made it an offer which allows them to back out with grace, but if they do so they also forfeit the oasis. I.. well, I'm glad you were Tada Akala."

Amara looked thoughtful as she looked at the entrance to the complex "Delenda is safe there. She may even play an important part in tomorrows celebration...or she may not if she is talking to the Earth Witch now." Amara bit her lip in thought. "I'd hoped she would have asked me to be present to help her make her case."

In reply to Hoskar Feather (msg # 182):

He smiles at Hoskar's reaction, "You think daylight is going to make them any less scary?" He gently shakes his head, "Take it from me, it doesn't, but your right, a good nights sleep will help." He looks over to Henal, "Henal, do you fancy coming with us in the morning and meeting some big women with even bigger axes? safety in numbers."

Hearing Akala-Tada's words to the Red Thorns Henal looks over at Kobal with a grimace. He then looks to see what response there is before he rides Whiteblaze over to a teathering place and dismounting.

He starts sorting out his equipment while Rikki heads off to hunt in the greenery.

Melock, that sounds like an interesting place to go. I'm not scared of seeing some axes though I hope they will not be swung at us.

In reply to Henal Longgrass (msg # 185):

"That's good to hear, we'll be ok as long as we don't upset them." He watches Rikki head off to hunt, "You might want to suggest to Rikki that jack rabbit's should be left alone."

"I'll go too. Someone who can detect the truth is always helpful."

"You want to visit the.... maybe I should come along to stop you all getting killed."

"Great!" he rubs his hands together, "We should definitely be safe."
He catches Kobals eye, "I wouldn't worry too much about any deal with the Red Thorns, at least they are bison riders. Personally, I'm more worried about turning up with Delenda if she becomes a Ranger, Sables are hated by all tribes." he chuckles, "Getting them to accept her is going to be entertaining."
He calls Taya over and feeds her, "If your still hungry and want to hunt, don't eat the jack rabbits as there's something weird going on with them."

In reply to Melock (msg # 189):

She quickly swallows the food, "Maybe, but now you've mention them, I have a sudden craving for jack rabbit." she giggles, "Lets hope I find something else first." She looks around for Four Paws, Four Paws, fancy coming hunting? We can hunt Rikki.. I mean hunt with Rikki."

The rest of the evening passes quickly and for once in total safety. It's noisy both in the small camp nestled in amongst the Giant Finger Holes and in the larger camp that surrounds it. Fires burn brightly and an hour before midnight music and chanting starts, coming from every direction and from deep under ground.

It's not unexpected, as for an hour before everything goes quiet, with a palpable tension rising in the warm night air. Even the hundreds of herd beasts sense it, so that apart from the occasional snort or passing of wind, the oasis is still. Then guided by a lone drum's beat the religious celebrations begin.

Women, each one a follower of Eiritha, appear from the vegetation, Red Thorns joining the two score women from the other nations present and in a long line begin to file down the steep slope and into the entrance tunnel to below....

A horn sounds, and is immediately answered from below and by the herd beasts too, who set up such a clamour not heard by any of the Rangers in their lifetime.

The earth begins to vibrate, it's hum spreading through the ground, which begins to emanate a magical glow which rises up in to the night time sky.

Amara watched the procession, eyes and ears open wanting to experience as much as possible. Her days of being an eirithan long gone, but she still held great affection for the herd mother. This was something she wanted to remember. The first time this ceremony had taken place in the temple they'd recovered from the wastelands. Enmity with the Red Thorns gone, she joined the groups celebrating the Earth Holy Day.

OOC:Exactly what colour is the glow in the sky? Just asking!

Melock wakes with a start when the horn blows and looks around in case they are under attack. When the herd beasts reply he slowly gets up rubbing his eyes, "Looks like that's all the sleep I'm getting tonight." He yawns, "I'm sure the noise and ritual will probably catch somethings attention, they'll need all the guards they can get." He gets himself armed and ready, then looks unsure where to go, "Any thoughts on where would be the best place to guard is?" He'll ask anyone near him.

"My concern," Kobal hisses back, "is that they accept no greater responsibility in return for recognition of the right to the oasis.  The Finger Holes are at the centre of the oasis.  They would defend the oasis in any event, so responsibility to defend the oasis adds nothing.  The three truths can be stretched.

"As you say, they will have the control of traffic to and from the Earth Temple.  I have grown up knowing the Red Thorns.  They are not to be trusted.  You only joined us recently - you were not to know.  But on this, they will grow strong and rich.  They will decide who enters and leaves.  Even earlier today we were discussing between ourselves whether to offer ten bison to them.  This will happen hundredfold in future.

"Nor does this gesture make them our allies.  All clans worship Waha, the Khan of Khans, yet we feud and raid amongst ourselves.  None will expect them to become allies of all just because of the Earth Temple.  While some Red Thorns may stay to guard the oasis - and demand their tribute - the rest will continue their roaming and raiding."

Kobal shakes his head.  "What is said cannot be unsaid.  I hope it turns out as you plan, and not as I fear.  I will need to explain this to the elders of my clan.  I hope you are there beside me at that time.  Your sincerity and faith may help convince them, for they may see I have no belief in my words."



Kobal turns to Melock.  "Delenda is one brave.  They may not like her, but what can one brave do against a whole clan or tribe?  In the same way, when Sand Fox and Nixa joined our band, many among our clan and the Sky Watchers were not happy with them, but what can one or two braves do amongst all of us?  But this is different.  This is the whole Red Thorn clan - our rivals - being given powers to claim they are chosen by Tada."

He finishes up tending to Black Hoof and checking on the herd, then goes off to be by himself.  He will not be good company tonight.


The next morning, Kobal wakes and performs his ablutions in preparation for the holy day.  He tries to put his concern about the Red Thorns out of his mind.  Together with the other men, he stands by one of the Finger Holes, to watch and join the ceremony for Eiritha, mother of Waha.  Haaro pads silently beside him.

Mother of Herds, watch over our beasts and protect them from sickness and disease.

Akala listened to Kobal only making guttural noises of understanding as the man spoke.

The big Brave removed his Zana stick only to make the single correction: "Free passage for all the tribes," Akala waved the root, "That was expressly stated.  That cannot be stretched.  I would be honored to stand next to you when you speak to the elders."

He clapped the man on his shoulder, a warrior's sign of solidarity.




Akala felt a bit of nervousness, but mostly pride as he awoke and rose to face the day.

He was excited to finally officially join the Rangers as his dreams had foretold. He had gone from searching for his destiny to living it.  That was a very acute distinction and the truth of it gave Akala a feeling of purpose that had been lacking for too long.  He watched the women descend into the earth with amazement, and watched the sky glow with intense passion.

The Big Brave wished to put that purpose to words and make his oath to Emesh-Ga.

Kobal nodded, somewhat mollified.  Enough had been said.  I forgot the part about free passage.  Still, these Red Thorns are like Raven.  They will control the traffic and twist free passage to mean something else.

"I say we kill them all, take their beasts for our own. They are barely adults and think they can tell us what is what" the speaker is a fierce and slightly crazed Storm Bull of nearly forty years, his large Iron axe hung over a heavily muscled shoulder.

"I say ignore them, we out number them. The oasis is ours whatever they say" This from a grizzled hunter.

The conversations goes back and forth, from one spectrum to the other, with a small and vocal group calling for peace and time for negotiation.

"Be quiet!"

A sharp voice speaks over them his tone settling them into silence "Or we can just use them to our advantage...."

It's the clan's shaman, wearing a cloak of multicoloured feathers, totally covering his body beneath. His red dyed face is proud and ageless, though his long braids are silver. The air swirls about him, the other side undeniably close, as if something or somethings are trying to get out.

As the community elements of the ceremony finished, and the initiates and priestesses moved out of sight to conduct secret rituals, Kobal looks to his fellow Rangers.  "Eiritha is a daughter of the Earth.  Today would be a good day to induct new members into the Wandering Rangers.  But first we should find Ohanzee.  He should be present to welcome Akala formally into our group."  He'd better have a good reason for not getting in touch with us...

Bleary-eyed, still not fully rested but better than before some sleep, Hoskar takes time to greet Issaries through his statue with a prayer for harmony.

Grant us that we fall into no disharmony this day and work the good words according to your model. Three lines of trade in understanding where all come out smiling.

Arming fully in metal barring the constricting helm and carrying the Earth Knight's shield with pride sometimes the best defence is a show of might he seeks out Nixa and Sand Fox with a request; having pondered on the teachings about people in the scroll he sold on to Angelika Snowspear. I know and respect your feelings, but hope one of you might wear the wyvern hauberk today as a favour. See it as a costume almost - a symbol that shows the Rangers are one. I'll not take it as binding you to doing this for the future.

Having made his request, he moves on; not wanting to put his comrades under the pressure of having their decision watched; and takes his stand close to Kobal. Think I overstepped yesterday: you're no leader, Hoskar, and you know it. Hold ready to look for peace if the shouting starts with Ohanzee

Akala shifted the weight of the new Greatsword strapped to his back with a small frown on his lips.

It was a great weapon, and he was humbled to receive it, but he was unsure of exactly how to use it.  Outside of using it with a club, he knew no real stances or forms with the thing- not like his sword and shield, or axe and shield for example.

He paused for a moment, thinking.

Perhaps, with the Hoskar's spell for strength, the big Brave might be able to heft the sword in one hand for a short time, using it as he would his bone sword, only with a bigger blade.

He chuckled to himself, I might look like Henal with a Bastard sword, proportionally.

Tucking the thought away in his mind until ready for experimentation, Akala put mind to the task voiced by Kobal, "Perhaps Greeshar might know where Ohanzee is.  I would recommend Whispers, but she is likely down the holes.  If she is not, she may be the more sound resource."

Unless there was a better idea, Akala would begin the search...

It turns out that Whispers from the Sky has vanished below ground and Greeshar when asked is unable to offer any help with where Ohanzee might be. In fact he and the shaman had only seen the Raven Brave head off in the direction of the Holes, so have no idea if he in fact reached here.

As this is being discussed the Rangers see coming through the tents are the Agimori, in single file and with grave looks on their faces. In their leader's hands is a hide bundle which they bring over to Tarnessh, handing it over reverently

"We found it several days past amongst a scene of carnage. Our spirits told us to look for those of the four feathers who roam the Wastes and that it was their destiny to find and our destiny to guard. We did not want to hand it over until you reached safety."

Kobal nods in agreement.  "Aye, that might be a good place to start.  Greeshar and Whispers were the last to see him.  But we met them before entering the oasis.  If he was able to enter himself, he might have met with the Earth Witch.  She'll be leading the rites at the moment.  We should look for his rhino too.  I didn't notice it anywhere when we entered yesterday, but I'm not good at recognising rhinos...  We should probably split up - make it faster to find that damned Raven.  I will try to speak to the Earth Witch later."

"If it wasn't for risk of being shot by the Red Thorns, I'd suggest Tarnessh asks Tulox to go for a look." He looks around at the rocks, "If a couple of us climbed those rocks, with the aid of Hoskar's farseeing charm, we might be able to spot him. We would make easy targets."

Hoskar nods. Makes sense. I'll just get that metal bucket of a helmet on my head and I'll go take a look. Someone had better give me a bunk up or join the climb and help - this gear was not made for climbing in, but at least with the shield and this armour they'd not find it easy to stick something in me.

Oh: if they do injure me, the healing armlet's on my left arm. Just touch it and help me out if I'm unconscious at the time. Otherwise, I'll be able to do it for myself.

Hoskar and who ever keeps him company climb several handy jumbles of rock and from their ten metre plus vantage points they are able to scan the oasis in all directions.

The vegetation hides much, but they can make out tents and the other normal bits and bobs expected in the camp of a whole clan. There's a large herd of Bison and other animals to the North and East, which includes animals from all five of the nations, though no visible Rhinos. Amongst the camp there are many people both Bison folk and their slaves, but no sign of Ohanzee.

The watchers are spotted by Red Thorns though nothing hostile occurs.

Tarnessh looked somewhat wary until he opened it and found the Golden Disk, at which point he beamed and bowed his head to the Agimori in thanks. "My greatest thanks to you for keeping it safe." He remembered something and after taking a moment to remember the names, he spoke, "I recall that a younger one of your group, I think a child, he seemed to have an attack of the shaking sickness when I spoke to him. Is he alright? I think his name was Uc. please forgive me if I am prying."

Standing next to Hoskar as the scan the area, Melock isn't too worried he can't see Ohanzee, "At least we can't see his rhino with the Red Thorns. If he's out there, I doubt he'll be travelling by day. Lets hope he's in the Earth Temple." He takes a moment to enjoy the view, "Good place to keep an eye on things up here," he looks skyward, "Though, you'd be an easy target for whatever killed those bison. Might be a good way to find out what it is."

Chuckling, Hoskar can't resist remarking it's easy to miss a rhino - such titchy things but then his expression shifts into worry but if he's not here, where in all the wastes is he? It's been a long time now. Know he's a capable man - brought my cousins through all right - but on your own it's easy to go under.

"No" answers Bes, the only woman of the group "He is more than fine, just touched by the Gods..."

"We will stay today and then we must hunt. When you wish to leave this place ride out into the Wastes and send up your hawk. We will not be far."

Whilst talking, Hoskar continues to study the oasis where the Red Thorns are camped. There are several tents that have great activity. One which must be the Khan's and another collection that seems to house the red skinned braves. Several newly put up totems dot the compound, the walls of which are made by collected bundles of dried thorn bushes. The Totems are of Bison and topped by a black bird's head.

Amara took part in the celebrations and devotions to Eiritha. She knew the other women regarded her as a child as she'd chosen not to follow the path they took, but there was something reassuring about forming the rituals she'd followed as a girl at her mothers side. She hoped Eiritha understood and accepted her choices and hoped she would when Delenda made hers, but today was a celebration of everything that made the Herd Mother great.

Still smiling, Hoskar nudges Melock. See over there? Isn't that your Rival's totem? Reckon we need to be alert for high jinks if it is.

"Hmmm, it looks like it," He looks at the tent and tries to work out if he could get there with out being detected when its dark. "It occurs to me, that they wouldn't have a reason to turn a lone Sky Watcher away. I'm thinking Ohanzee maybe with their shaman." He smiles, "Though if he lets on he knows us, they may not let him go."

Amara finds herself in the large cavern below ground, where they found the Sable women captives all those weeks ago. It was a different place now, the rotten air displaced with an earthy freshness, helped by the multiple small altars each covered with burning piles of incense, votive offerings and fetishes and the walls covered in new murals depicting the many herd beasts of the nations of Prax.

The place is packed with women, many who are lay members just like Amara, though there are several more senior cubists including a the Blue Llama priestess who is leading the prayers here. Aa feeling of companionship built not on war but on love and care fills the holy space.

Deeper within the complex more erudite ceremonies are taking place and the red haired brave knows that a heroquest has been started and that being here she is supporting those who walk the ancient paths.

Of Delenda there is no sign, though she can see that several of the fell Babeester Gor axe sisters are guarding the entrance to the Earth Complex.

"Thank you, but I'm not sure how long I'll be here. Will you be out in the Wastes that long?"

Kobal asks those within the bounds of the Earth Temple land if they came across a lone, short rhino brave with a blue arm when they approached the oasis.

With the happiness of joining the celebration and knowing she'd done good by helping the priestesses achieve something of what they'd intended to accomplish. It was with a happy face that Amara approached the Babeester Gor axe sisters.

She greeted each in turn with a smile "I am Amara Brightsky. I have been looking for Delenda AxeSister. I am here to see her. Could you please take me to her?"

The two warriors are not smiling. Towering over Amara they block the entrance with their long handled axes, gristly trophies swinging from their shafts: severed male genitalia, fingers and ears tied on with human hair.

"She is within and you may not see her whilst she is there. None but those initiated into the mysteries may pass...."

One of them perhaps feeling pity for Amara adds "She initiates into the Avenging Goddess today. Her time amongst the weak is over."

"We will find you if it is willed by the spirits that we should. Our lands lie across the river but our spirits called us here and so we shall remain until our task is done. Other of our kind are following you for they seek what you carry. They follow the winter sun god, the god without fire and do the bidding of the bearded men of the towers."

Kobal's questions are met with blank stares and negative responses, though everyone is friendly and helpful. They've all been here for some time and remember seeing no Rhino riders in that time.

Still enjoying the view, "The only thing I can think of to help find Ohanzee is to pray to Raven and see if he'll help." He starts to climb down, "I don't think staying up here looking for him is going to work." He'll look for the others and tell them his idea and see if they agree.

In reply to GM (msg # 219):

Amara stiffened at the warriors initial response, almost ready to fight, but relaxed as soon as the remaining sister added her words "It is good she has found a Great Spirit that is in keeping with her personality and direction." Amara paused for a moment before adding. "We are to hold a joining ceremony for the wandering rangers tonight. If she is free and one of your number, I'd request her presence there."

"You do not understand, she will never be free as you put it. She is tied to her Goddess and will only do what she commands."

"You must say goodbye to the person you once knew...."

The grin on his lips belied by the concern for Ohanzee lingering in his eyes, Hoskar concurs, beginning his heavy and clanking climb down from the rock. Think you're right. Time to see how we can make ourselves useful round here.

With little else to occupy his time Salen wanders around near the GFH and down below, where he can, reminding himself of the layout and how things have changed since his last time here. Of course, there are issues for him to deal with but right here, right now, there is little that can be done.

"Well that's no good. Thank you for telling me this. It might save us being ambushed. Do you think they would attack here?"

Amara stiffened "In this case, I must see her now to see if this the path she wants, instead of being coerced into accepting this path. If it is the one she chooses then I will accept her decision. If it is not, then accepting her into it when there are other paths that promote the Earth is a poor decision and will only lead to problems for us all." Amara looked at the Axe sisters "You know who I am. We freed this place to be a temple for the Earth and work constantly to promote the Garden. Striking me down will harm the Earth. So who would take vengeance for it?"

Amara glared at the Babeester Gor sisters "I ask for nothing more than to see her for a few moments. Surely even you would wish to know she is committed to the Hand of Vengeance."

"I do not care who you are girl. You test our patience by questioning our Goddess. Cease now or suffer the consequences."

Both women change their stance, as from behind them come several other Axe sisters. They exude violence in it's basest form, each warrior at one with the death runes that adorn their bodies.

The feeling of dread passes outwards like a black wave into the crowd, pushing back all those with ties to Fertility and Life and momentarily causes the celebrations in the main cavern to falter.

Salen, a male, is still welcome here in the outer caverns and happens to enter as this takes place, spying Amara up against a wall of copper hued warriors...

Amara scowled at the women, she was fed up of being pushed around, but seeing the wave of dread spread across the cavern and the fact she was ridiculously outnnumbered she did not push the issue. "Very well. I shall leave, but I won't consider the matter closed until I see your new sister."

Kobal returns to those of the Rangers who are above ground.  "No one has seen or heard of Ohanzee.  We have done all we can, short of leaving the Temple bounds - which I don't care to test again so soon - and asking the Earth Witch - and she is still leading worship.

"We have no sign that Ohanzee was taken.  Rather, he seems to have slipped away freely, since he had time to take his rhino with him.  We run out of time, since we begin our service to the Earth Witch tomorrow.  I would rather that we welcome Akala into the Rangers before that.

"Ohanzee can look after himself (I hope).  He will return to us when he has finished or tired of whatever mischief he's up to.  I daresay Cantalas doesn't miss him.  I suggest that we see whether there are others here who would join our band, particularly while our entrance yesterday with Emesh-Ga is fresh in their minds.  Many of the Earth cultists are down in the Finger Holes at the moment, though, unfortunately."

Henal helps in asking around the camp for Ohanzee then settles in to watch what he can of the ceremony from the ground level walking around the Finger Holes looking at the greenery.

Akala chewed absently on his Zana root all the while listening to Kobal speak.

When the man was finished, he gave a guttural agreement with the sentiments spoken and expressed that he would speak to some of the Blue Llamas, to see if any wanted to join up.  He also asserted a group of Rangers should be selected to speak to the Red Thorns and see what they had decided as to the offering from Tada.

It then occurred to Akala to ask Kobal, "Are there any healers among the Bison riders that might be able to aid me to purge this blasted chaos poison from my body?  It wears on me and causes my breath to catch fire in my lungs from time to time."

Another thought occurred, "And whom might I speak to, who might be able to tell us the properties of this Greatsword?  Perhaps a Shaman?"

Akala would listen for the answer, then head off to speak to Cantalas and Peat Bog.

"I think Sand Fox and Nixa would be best suited to that task," says Kobal.  "They can tell their clansmen how we Rangers have not treated them differently even though they are from a rival clan."  I've got no interest going amongst the Red Thorns anyway.



Kobal looks at him and claps him on the shoulder.  "Akala, I'm sorry, we've been pre-occupied with other things the past couple of days.  I think the best people to speak to would be the priestesses, but they'd all be below taking part in the ceremonies today."



"I'm sorry, I wasn't able to discover anything about the sword, even though I've had it for a while myself.  Even the shield I took instead - it has some writing on it, but they are just squiggles to me.  Best to take it a shaman or elder.  Though we have two weeks here before we can return to the Wise Ones and our clans.  Maybe even the Agimori when next we see them."

Or maybe that Indigo Hue might've been able to help...

Amara soon finds herself back amongst the general celebrations in the caverns, and spying Salen the two Rangers see about find a space to hold the upcoming Initiation of Akala.

One cave is free and it is the one where the Outlaw shaman had been killed by the Rangers. A fitting place perhaps for welcoming new braves to the fold.

It takes a short while to clear, but soon enough both braves stand back pleased with their work. There are oil lamps and hides on the ground and ample space to hold the ritual.

One could say many things about Amara, but she was never dull. Salen watched with an amused smile as his fellow Ranger dared to get uppity with the Babeester Gor sisters. He was preparing to go and save her hide when she finally saw sense (it did happen occasionally) and withdrew. When she left he fell in beside her.

"Ah, Babeester Gor Sisters...headstrong, powerful, opinionated, no-nonsense...

Remind you of anyone?"

He gave her a nudge with his elbow, grinning, then stepped back just in case she decided to knock his head off.

"Come, let us find somewhere to hold Akala's initiation."

Eventually they made their way to the cavern where the outlaw Red Thorn shaman was finally put to rest for good.

"Seems like a long, long time since we did for that bastard, doesn't it? Ah well, good riddance. Let us begin."

And so they went to work, and in time were done. Salen had to admit it looked pretty darned good.

"Melock" Amara said in response to Salens question.

Amara followed Salen and was pleased at the outcome. It seemed suitably welcome, inviting and imposing enough to be used for the purpose and it was the place where they'd sworn the first time. She nodded to Salen with satisfaction that they'd picked the right place. "It seems as though ti was not that long ago we were here making our vow for the first time too." Amara smiled at Salen remembering the solemn oath she took at this place not long ago.

Amara nodded her head in satisfaction as she made her way to try to garner more rangers. To spread the garden they needed larger numbers. Not just fighters, but almost any that would devote to the Garden, regardless of tribe and past reputation.

When he climbs down, he looks around to find the others. When he spies Kobal and Akala, he heads over to them. "No sign of Ohanzee or Wihakayda from up high, but I did see what was probably their Raven shaman tent. There's a chance he's in there, maybe of his own free will, a lone Sky Watcher could easily claim not to know the Prairie Thunder Clan. So if you do go to speak to the Red Thorns and he is there and he pretends not to know you, try not to give the game away." He glances back towards the Earth Temple, "The only other idea I have to help find him, is to ask Raven. After what happened last time, I think I need to check with everyone first and then find somewhere quiet and out of the way. I'll go for a walk and see if I can find a place."

"Attack here, when there is over four hundred people? I do not think so" replies Bes. It actually looks like she  considers this a possibility and not some crazy talk by Tarnessh.

"What is possible is that they may try other means. But what I do not know."

Akala finds Cantalas and Peat Bog easily and after a surprisingly easy discussion finds that he has a companion for his upcoming oath taking.

Peat needs little convincing, his enthusiasm dispelling any worries his father may have had. Anyone watching can easily see that the Blue Llama elder had likely made up his mind before anyways.

Moving amongst the other Blue Llama braves turns up two others willing to join, both young braves who were evidently good friends with Peat.

Melock knows that to call on Raven today would risk interrupting the Eirithan High Holy day, and possibly cause disorder and mayhem not only for those above ground but also for the many Heroquestors below.

Meanwhile as he walks along the lip of the main Hole Henal finds himself by a large group of Red Thorn braves, who are also here for the celebrations. They stand amongst women and children of their clan, who also stop and stare with various degrees of hostility.

"Oi, look what we've got here?" says one, causing the group to turn and stare at the approaching Ranger.

Whilst this is happening the rest of the Rangers are gathering, ready to head below. All that needs to be done is find Henal and alert Emesh-Ga that they are ready, which any of the Rangers can do, as if speaking to their bound spirits.

Henal seeing so many Red Thorns together turns away and heads back towards where the Rangers are camped. He glares at any that would be in his path.

No one tries to stop the Thunderbird brave, but he can't help but hear the disparaging comments they thow at him, mainly to do with his height...

Seeing Henal approach, Kobal says to the others, "Let's prepare for the initiation.  Pigments.  Drums and instruments.  A beast for sacrifice.  Once we're ready, we can head down and call Emesh-Ga to induct the new Rangers."  He already has a knife with him for the ritual scarring.

Akala did what he could to help collect the item necessary for the ritual.

He eyed the knife in Kobal's hand warily, but really held no fear in his heart.  Already riding with the Rangers had made Akala more than just rich, more than just stronger and more skilled; it had given him purpose.  It had provided a direction in which to let his javelin fly.

This fact made almost any sacrifice freely happily given, accompanied by grattitude for the opportunity.

The  Wandering Rangers congregate downstairs, their passage creating some interest from those on the outskirts of the Eirithan ceremonies.

For a sacrifice the Rangers are offered an impala for a good price from one of the Thunder Clan braves, who at the last moment agrees to join the group. He'd heard about their exploits and was easily swayed by Salen's laid back manner and stories of their accomplishments. Going by the name of Leaper he is already a follower of Thunderbird and by the sounds of it an accomplished warrior. Barely reaching the waist of Salen, he looks like an infant next to the massive Akala. Like his compatriots the brave is bald, wears only a loincloth and is armed with a short bow that gleams magically. His quiver contains a selection of fine looking arrows and tucked in between them is what looks like a long copper blade.

The cavern where the Gargathi shaman had met his end is reached and hides are hung across the entrances helping to dull the temple noises enough to be heard.

Filled with oil lamps and with the walls daubed in fresh Runes and pictures hastily added by Amara and Salen, the cave looks perfect and it goes without saying that it will make an excellent place for future rituals.

Following the Rangers come the remnants of the Ten Tall Men, who though not joining the Rangers have decided to guard the ritual instead. Spreading their hide cloaks on the ground, they sit outside in the passage, adding their drums to the many already being played close by...

Tarnessh thanked them again. "I will have to tell the others of this. Now, I should go rejoin the others, as I believe that another is going to be initiated into the Wandering Rangers."

He then met the other Wandering Rangers, not wanting to miss Akala's initiation, after all.

As Tarnessh enters the cave he can't help but notice that there are three Blue Llama braves present too. One of them, Glama is his name, is a follower of Sun Hawk, whom Tarnessh had barely had the chance to talk to on the journey here.

It looks like he is planning on taking the oath of allegiance.

After wandering round outside, Melock heads down with the others. He is quite surprised by the number of people wanting to join the Rangers. When he see's that another Sun Hawk is about to join them, That'll make things a bit harder for me. He looks round the cave, remembering last time they were here. He walks over to Amara and Salen, "You've done an amazing job getting this place ready. Still no sign of Ohanzee, its going to seem a bit weird doing this without him, but needs must. You'll be happy to hear that because I've been doing other things, I haven't had chance to find any more Ravens to join us." He smiles, "Tomorrow, when all the high holy day celebrations have finished, can I use this space to summon Raven and see if he can help find Ohanzee?"

"I bet raven tricked him for daring to call on him and put the jackrabbits spirit in Ohanzee's body and Ohanzees spirit in the jackrabbit." Amara said as she entered the room "So raven might not be willing to talk to you...and if you summon Grandmother spider here, I'll be very upset."

Amara greeted the new recruits with a warm and welcoming smile. Adding to their number was a good thing. The more that joined the stronger the group might be. All would be heros some day.

In reply to Amara Brightsky (msg # 249):

"That's something I hadn't thought of, but Greeshar and Whispers saw him camped by the bottom of the cliff," he thinks for a moment, "Well, one way or another I'll find out tomorrow, if no one minds." His eyes sparkle in the flickering light, "Speaking of Grandmother Spider, you just reminded me, I need to talk to the Earth Witch about her." He joins Amara in greeting the new recruits.

Henal greets the new recruits for the Rangers, particularly Peat as another Thunderbird.

If Ohanzee's spirit was in a jack rabbit it would probably be damn easy to catch then.

"Yes, all we have to do is look out for a really dumb jackrabbit."

Salen grinned from ear to ear, but nodded to Melock that he was happy for him to call on Raven the following day.

"I'd say unlucky rather than dumb. Just like I seem to draw spirits to me. I still don't think he was turn into a jack rabbit, I reckon he left the camp of his own free will." He acknowledges Salens nod, "Of course the Earth Witch can always say no, hopefully she wont."

"I don't think he was turned into a jackrabbit either. For a start what he did with the female jackrabbit might make me worry about him when he returns to us, but I do think Ohanzee is connected to that jackrabbit and that the jackrabbit is awakened somehow. I also think it will lead us to Ohanzee eventually....but I don't see a jackrabbit surviving here for long. Too tasty."

"He seemed pretty happy if he was that jackrabbit, if the backflips and winks were any indication. " Tarnessh mused to the others after greeting the new recruits. He particularily asked Glama if he would wish to speak later, as a fellow Sun Hawk initiate.
