The Giant Finger Holes, the Marriage of Tada.

With Kobal in the lead the large group of mounted folk, their Morokanth travelling companions and Feather friends soaring overhead, head off towards the not so distant Giant Finger Holes.

Even before they'd started, magic had begun to build up, donated by Rangers, or sucked in by the ceremony of Coming Home. Emesh-Ga strode amongst them, gradually growing more corporeal as the journey progressed and as soon as his foot struck ground enriched by the Earth Temples resurgent magic he broke out into song.

Those who had made the journey before couldn't help but smile at the sight of grass and healthy shrubs, small flocks of birds rising into the gloomy sky as they approached. But despite the verdant growth the Rangers could see that it had not spread any further, having likely reached the boundary of the magics stored and summoned in the Temple.

The Giant Finger Holes, the Marriage of Tada.

Ohanzee can feel the magic growing as they march, growing with the many donations to the ceremony, his own included. But sense the greater portion that waits ahead like a pool, a pool of magic about the Earth Temple, about the pool of water. Then, as they step over the boundary of the outer reaches of the Earth Temple's magics it is as thought he has plunged into the pool.

He looks back over his shoulder just in time to see the trailing shadow of the harpies snaking across the Wastes turn from just that into an ethereal blue serpent encompassing those behind in its ghostly light as it too crosses over.

His gaze turns forwards again, his skin touched by the flowing currents of magic which feels for all the world like real Water washing all about him. The River looks at Kobal but sees the giant form of Tada before him and then looking to the side sees Amara but not Amara, Amara the Earth Queen.

Looking ahead again he sees the Earth Temple of the Giant's Finger Holes through the watery shimmer of magic, but it too shifts as their procession cause ripples in the magical pool of energy about the place. A block at one time askew and half buried appears standing true and in it's right place again as a ripple passes between it and them.

Piece by piece the place that is now become the place that it was then, or perhaps the now becomes the then. The River lays eyes on Tada's home and it fills him with joy at the wonder of it. He calls out in the rumbling voice of Water rushing over boulders and stones "Tada returns!" Then looking across at the Earth Queen his heart is filled with love and his stomach feels like a knot of eels "And with his the most beautiful of beings, my wife the Earth Queen!"

He looks forward again "All hail Tada and all hail the wondrous Earth Queen!"

The Giant Finger Holes, the Marriage of Tada.

On the outskirts of the Oasis a large crowd of nomads sat atop their mounts waiting for the arrival of the Wandering Rangers. Word had arrived via Hatha's brothers and this time no one barred the arrival of Tada and his companions.

Horns had sounded, long before anyone had spotted the travellers, and flocks of birds wheeled this way and that, veering off sharply as the Harpies swooped into view. This caused a ripple of unease but the crowd held their place, bolstered by the Eirithan Priestesses and the knowledge of who came in their wake.

Like a river the feathered creatures swooped low over the trees, flowing over them to pour down into the largest of holes, vanishing for the moment as they came to rest somewhere below.

Back at the edge of the trees, the crowd parted, creating a tunnel for Tada and the others to pass through.

Wearing his finest armour...all but that constricting helm ill-befitting Condor...Hoskar drops back through the group as the procession unfolds no need for a herald: I'll do the other thing and watch the path.

Sat erect upon Ram's broad back, he rides at the rear bearing the mighty shield of their captain Emesh-Ga and with it no weapon but the staff of the trader; carried horizontal like the bar across Issaries own rune. Expecting no problems he watches the rear formally, yet not without attention.

Guide is good but one must guard
Foemen oft come ininvited.
Path watch true for our homecoming.

Though the lower place is hard
Khan must not be left benighted.
Ward the joys of our homecoming.

Benison must not be marred
Nor the battle flame ignited.
Keep the peace of our homecoming.

Harmony for this homecoming.

Amara could feel the tingle on her skin as they crossed the threshold, into the realm where the Temple held sway and the green had returned. She'd assumed it was due to her new connection to the Earth. She raised her head proud as the group arrived back at the Giants finger holes, somewhat surprised the Red Thorns had not chosen to bar their path once more. She smiled at Ohanzee's compliment, but thought it detracted from Tada.

"We are guests of Tada and his bride to be, dear husband." she raised her voice to sound throughout the throng gathered to meet them. "The serpent prince and I have returned to bring life to this place, bringing the ancient guardians of the Earth, the harpies to protect this temple and guard it as they have stood watch for many years. Fear not these harpies as they are pure and untouched by chaos unlike their tainted brethren. Any who harms one of these harpies shall fall to the judgement of Tada."

She bowed her head towards the crowd "We are all priviliged to be present at Tada's marriage. Let this be a time for all to celebrate. Hail Tada and his wife to be."

Despite the magic of the event the Rangers can't help noticing the grimaces and ill feeling from part of the crowd. Older warriors mainly, showing distaste at such youth and mighty titles perhaps. Nevertheless no one interferes.

Tada rides in silence as they approach the oasis, while others in his retinue might chatter.  Leading his retinue through the path that the inhabitants have made, he notes some smiles, some awe, some frowns.  It is ever like this in one's court.

Silent still, he waits until his heralds have spoken before he speaks himself.  A lord does not announce his own arrival.  When he speaks, it is loudly but calmly.

We return to this sacred ground
Borne by the Air
Genert our father
Earth our mother
Water our friend

Our Task is complete
Chaos is defeated
Old allies are found
Now we return
To greet our Consort

Tada leads the party towards the Earth Temple, but at the bounds, he turns and rides in a straight path along the boundary, before turning at right angles and riding straight down again, and again, and again, until he has completed riding a square around the stone circle of the Earth Temple.  Only then does Tada enter the temple bounds and head for the main entrance of the temple.

At the rear, as he senses hostility here and there - sees it even in some faces - the space between Hoskar's shoulder blades tingles as if in anticipation of an attack; but for the moment there is none.

Glad of this strong metal around me, but Issaries be praised: the peace holds somehow...it actually holds!

Glancing from face to face in the crowd, he sees a gamut of expressions: hope and wonder from some children here, impassive watching from a well-seasoned man wearing little but a loincloth with a huge club hanging by his thigh there, modest hearth-wives looking down yet glancing shyly at the passing party, and yes some scowls among the men. An eyebrow raised at talk of Tada from ones so young, a scarred face wrinkling in distaste, a young warrior smiling to see his elders left unable to act, and so it goes on; guide and guard watching, looking for a moment of alarm yet pouring out his heart silently to the god to keep harmony strong.

He is not sure, but thinks he sees Kolar the Blunt holding himself erect yet detached. Think that's him. Good man. Honest too. Speculatively, he lowers his head briefly, a visible mark of respect, but there is no response from the distant figure. Maybe not even looking.

Tracing the square for the earth, path-watch and rear-guard follows Kobal-Tada's lead.

The Giant Finger Holes, the Marriage of Tada.

Tada's entrance into the above ground confines of the Earth Temple draws a rousing cheer from the crowd of nomads waiting there, amongst the huge blocks of stone that thanks to the week's magical resonance shimmer back and forth between ruin and their once Golden Age splendour.

A tight knot of priestesses await the Rangers, the Earth Queen slightly to their fore where she stands somewhat bemused next to the Harpy Queen Hillman Musheen, who thanks to her glamour is somewhat stealing the show from the arrival of Tada and the Rangers as those nearest in the crowd switch their gaze back and forth continuously.

In the wake of the Rangers come the Vingans and the Morokanth, Broken Claw partially hidden by a cloud of darkness that had drawn strength from the ceremony. There are other Morokanth present and they move forward to greet their kinsfolk, a move followed by many of the crowd who surge forward to cover the new arrivals with garlands of flowers and to offer refreshments to the dusty travellers.

It's then that the Rangers see close to the Priestesses their companion Melock, looking hale and hearty, standing with a small group of Black Shield Bison Riders, two of whom give off the golden glow of Sun Hawk Worshippers.

At the Wandering Rangers approach the Earth Witch steps forward

"All hail the mighty Tada, the River King and the Earth Queen", then turning to Emesh-Ga, the great Earth spirit who now fully corporeal, stands proud next to Kobal, towering over all those present "And my Lord Emesh-Ga, your palace awaits you as does your wife..."

"You return with the magic of fertile water, heralding the promise of cleansing to come. Daga trapped away by successful quests and in the company of winged guardians of times gone by. We salute you and ask that you accept our hospitality. Leave behind the darkness of this day and come below where your hall awaits, to prepare for the coming marriage, rituals and obligations of your faith..."

Tada nods in acknowledgment, then says, "We return with our task completed, Wise One.  And bring friends into the bargain.  I see you have already met the Queen of the Harpies."  Another nod, this time to Hillman Musheen, whose presence had made their own entrance easier.

He turns back and motions to Broken Claw.  "The morokanth who first sought your aid have accompanied us here."  Then to the Vingans, "The Thunder Girls had been en route to seek your aid as well."  And then to the rhino riders in their party, "While the Skywatcher clan continues to regroup."

Throughout all this, though, Tada's eyes often go back to the figure of Melock.  It is good that brave is healthy again.  He gives a nod to the Black Shield braves as well, out of politeness.  He dismounts and, fighting the urge to rush to Melock to hug/headbutt him, commences the descent into the temple, as protocol dictates.

Seeing Melock he grins but stays in his place in the procession, his expression returning to a solemn look as they get ready to enter the temple. He lets the words of Tada pass for all the Wandering Rangers rather than replying to the Earth Witch's greeting. Then follows the groom into the temple.

Seeing Melock whole and hearty as he dismounts in the wake of Kobal-Tada, Hoskar breaks into a broad and joyful smile. While he too refrains from the exhibition of joy that is in his heart, he cannot resist catching the Raven brave's eye and winking, just once, with a small gesture to the two feathers in his hair, which Melock had seen only one before.

I've been there too, my friend. Must swap stories later.

With bows to those of power, as custome dictates, he continues to follow his leaders.

The statuesque Rhino rider, near naked, her copper hued skin gleaming from holy oil, returns the bows, a massive snake curled about her broad shoulders. She's surrounded by a cloud of holy smoke, incense and attended by a bevy of earth priestesses who have been drawn here by the magical pull of the ancient temple. Several of them are recognisable to the Rangers having met them here before.

Also there, is the Harpy Queen, in all her glory, on either side standing two of her more impressive attendants. She beams at her saviours, promising to each of them that she will receive them later that evening.

As they and the other Rangers walk past, the ground trembles and stirs as Gadesha the guardian moves around below their feet, the powerful earth elementaƶl over joyed that her husband Emesh-Ga has returned.

As they head towards the small hold where they can descend into the depths via a steep gouge in the ground, the party is met by Kelab Besi the Red Thorn Khan and his entourage, strong warriors and elders of the clan.

Ohanzee is glad to see Melock looking so well, especially when last he lay eyes on his fellow Raven conspirator he was looking so dead! The portion of himself that is Ohanzee Blue Arm grins at the Bison rider, but before he says anything to the brave Earth Witch formally greets them. He dismounts and bows to her and then to the Harpy Queen before responding to the Earth Witch "Quest upon quest. Ancient ways remembered and ancient ones awoken. Promises made and promises fulfilled. So much more to do but the first steps are made." he frowns and looks like he has no idea why he just said what he said.

Then he pauses, turning back to his rhino before it is taken away and removes a sack from it and as Kobal begins his decent the young brave moves over to Melock "Here. It'll not take a finger, it'll not loose you a fiend and it's more likely to keep you out of trouble than get you into it!" and with a grin he hands over the sack that wriggles slightly.

Walking briskly he catches up to Kobal and walks alongside Amara accepting garlands and offerings from the onlookers with the pride of Ohanzee and the dignity of the River King.

Standing with the new comers from the Black Shield clan, Melock makes sure he's on the opposite side of the group to the Sunhawks. As Tada's party approaches the outer boundary of the temple grounds, he see's the River King flowing at his side, Melock takes an involuntary step backwards and starts to shake. He starts taking deep breaths to try and calm himself down, "It must be an illusion, why.. how.. would they bring a serpent here?" he nods, agreeing with himself, "Yes that's it, its not real." He gulps and steps back to where he was standing still shaking slightly. His eyes follow the procession as it marks an Earth rune round the temple only turning when they go behind him. By the time they near the Earth Witch, Melock has managed to stop shaking and starts peering through the illusion looking for his friends. Wondering who is Tada, he stares until he can make out Kobal through the magic, when he makes eye contact he smiles and bows his head as a sign of respect. He flicks his eyes from one person to the next, raising a hand in salute to Henal, he catches Hoskar's wink and returns it, though a puzzled look darts across his face when he see's he has gained another feather.
He starts shaking again as the River King swirls past him, but manages to calm down when he greets the Earth Witch and is just starting to smile again, when he turns and flows towards Melock, He takes a few steps backwards and raises his hands to ward him off. When he hears Ohanzee's voice he lowers his hands and stands his ground, but it isn't enough to stop him trembling, "STAY AWAY...." Not meaning to shout, he claps his hand over his mouth. He tries to focus on the bag not the River King, and chokes out a whispered, "Just put it on the ground and leave"

He bows to the Kelab Besi, Kobal again, now that they have entered the Earth Temple grounds.  "Khan, we destroyed only those harpies who consorted with Chaos.  Those harpies untainted by Chaos, lead by Queen Hillmaz Mushen," he nods again to the Harpy Queen, "have accompanied us back to this Temple."

"I look forward to my wedding; and am honoured that it has been set on an auspicious day.  If you will excuse us, however, Khan, first we must report to the Earth Witch."  With another bow, Kobal makes to continue down into the Temple.

Re: The Giant Finger Holes, the Marriage of Tada.

As the Wandering Rangers and their many varied companions flow past Voras and Sehana, the two braves can see as the magic shifts and flows about the Rangers, that like them each one has a coloured feather in their hair, more than likely given in their own recent adult initiation rites.

The hero bands' youth stands out, just as much as their hodgepodge collection of metal weapons and armour: Lead, Copper, Gold and Bronze and their equipment radiates it's own special magic. So rich beyond their years and the two Sun Hawk braves had already been shown earlier the collection of nearly one hundred herd beasts, each bearing the bands' brand.

Amongst the passing braves, atop packs, backs of mounts and in some cases shoulders are an array of Manul cats: the sturdy cats of the Wastes, Bats, Dog and one Jerboa, each one containing a bound spirit. There's a barrage of information swapped between them and both Black Shields' own familiars, in Sehana's case a Cowpecker hiding amongst a small flock of the birds that swirl about the young woman's head.

Caught up in the procession they find themselves led along the northern lip of the largest hole and around a smaller hole, a dimly lit pool far below, mirroring the stagnant lake in the former. Then down a steep tear in the ground, past the small pool, along a cool stone passage and then back out in to the sunshine, this time at the base of the largest hole. Looking up they see that stood around, looking down are a sea of spectators who cheer at the processions' appearance, the noise continuing as they wind along the lake's stinking shore to enter into another tunnel in the western wall.

Here the crowd thins, leaving only the Wandering Rangers, the Earth Witch, her assistants and the two Black Shield braves who have found themselves in the company of two Sun Hawk worshipping Rangers. Introducing themselves on the walk, one a High Llama brave named Gloaming, a stern looking brave, with a death rune on his face and the other, resembling the one called Kobal and named Tarnessh Listens to Silence, link arms with the new comers, ready to answer questions and aid them in settling in....

Inside the short tunnel opens into a long cavern, lit by scores of spluttering fat lamps, the floor covered with rushes and tanned hides of all the beasts of the Wastes. Several passages lead off into darkness, two to the north, just visible behind the many stone columns, stalagmites and stalactites that litter the cave, and two to the south, one of which gives off a feeling of coldness and dread.

Tarnessh leans over to Voras and Sehana, whispering "I was told that this place was filled with ghouls, eaters of the dead. Impala braves turned undead by the magics of an outlaw shaman...A Red Thorn before ejected from his clan."

The magic of the welcome home ceremony now begins to dwindle and the Earth Witch turns to the assembled braves.

He stays at the back, eager to hear what the others have been up to, but knowing it will be a while before he gets chance to catch up.

Amara greeted Melock with a hug, looking over him to make sure he was still as she remembered before making her excuses to go down into the depths of the temple. "I am glad to see you fully recovered Melock." in tone that implied she was reassured that he hadn't managed to mess up getting better. "I would be eager to hear your news."

As the band assembled in the oath room, Amara glanced around, pleased to see some new faces. The life of a wandering ranger was most assuredly a dangerous one, and she was pleased to see some more had chosen to join their number. The fact the feathered rivals had picked them out too, meant they were destined for great things along with all the rest. She greeted the new arrivals with a quick, but warm smile, and as the magic started fading and her elegance as the Earth Queen slowly dissipated, Amara was somewhat relieved to be herself again, although she kept one hand clasped around the gift Ohanzee had given to her.

She inclined her head to show thanks to the Earth Witch. "I may only speak for myself, but I thank you to have a warm home in this place both to share with all other rangers and to be close to the Temple. I would accept this most precious gift, as we all stand as one, to restore the green and bring back the earth. Any ranger should be proud of our accomplishments, yet much remains to do. We will stand guard at this place for as long as we are here, but our work calls us to other places for the glory of the Earth and restoration of the garden." Amara wondered if the Earth witch would see the change that had taken place in her during their expedition to slay the chaos harpies.

Wiping the clay from his face, he goes to the back of the group, to Melock.  "Brother!"  Grabbing the brave by both arms, he gives Melock a firm but not too hard - he's not sure how well recovered the brave is - headbutt.  "It's good to see you with us again.  You have missed much of the fun and glory!  And who are these two with you?  Managed to find new recruits for us?"

"Not rumours, they were killed by some of the braves here. The one talking to Melock is my brother Kobal. He is getting married next week to the Red Thorn Chieftain's daughter.

So what's news from back at the grasslands, your clan has joined ours there haven't they? We travelled with some Black Shields last season. Led by a man called Long Cast. Several of his braves joined us afterwards....They fell in battle though."

When he hears Sehana speaking better Earth speech than he can he asks Voras, "Did you also understand what the Earth Witch said?"

He brances himself when Kobal greets him and returns the head butt, "I see you all made it back." he turns to introduce the two Sunhawks, "This is Sehana and this is Voras." he sighs, "both Sunhawks, I don't suppose any Ravens joined you while you were away?"

Kobal blinks, then stares at the young brave, swallowing visibly.

A number of thoughts go through his mind:

Did I send word to my family before the mission that I had become betrothed?  Even if I didn't, did the Earth Witch send any word?  He'd been planning to ask the Noita to send word to his family via the Earth priestesses when they sat down to eat in any event.

From bachelor to two wives in so short a time?  He isn't sure whether he should be happy or worried.

Who is this woman?  Does she want to join the Wandering Rangers, or is she just a messenger from the Black Shields?

He regains his composure somewhat.  "I am Kobal, son of Colnar Three Steps of the Prairie Thunder clan."  Just in case she's mistaken his identity.  I really hope it's a case of mistaken identity.  "Welcome," I think, "among we Wandering Rangers.  And you are...?"

As the home coming magic wanes and they are lead to the caves that are now the home of the Wandering Rangers Ohanzee's gaze passes to the pool where Melock died more than once. He echoes Kobal's feelings on the gift of the place "An honour indeed. And fitting too.".

Now away from it deeper in the network he looks about at the Sun Hawk braves muttering "I sense that Sun Hawk has touched you two. More though, he has shown you visions that brought you here as much as any message you carry or other reason for your journeys. You should share them, there may be more knowledge useful to us when combined with the visions we had."

Then he looks at Kobal "Kobal Two Brides it is then, one for each feather!" he chuckles "Two parties to see to!" Then looking to his fellow Raven brave he speaks "It is good to see you on your feet and hearty again Melock Trembles Before Serpents! Most of us are here, but not all survived."

His work as rearguard and follower done, Tada-Kobal becoming once more Kobal, khan's son and honoured in his own right but with fading herolight, Hoskar relaxes somewhat; his grin broadening.

Waiting his turn, he ambles back towards Melock; hearing Sehana's news with surprise but too caught up in the moment of meeting his old friends again to truly register this complication.

Unrestrained by ceremony, he grasps Melock firmly by the hand with comradely clasp. Glad you made it: feared you were a goner there. Sometime later, I'll be interested to hear what happened - maybe compare notes. I've been dead too lately he grins still more broadly and am now two-feather for that reason.

Praise to the earth - it is a happy return indeed he intones more formally with arms spread wide, his face still wreathed in smiles.

Not wishing to intrude, but keen to meet a new comrade, he edges towards Sehana and Ohanzee awaiting an opportunity to offer welcome.

Hmm, so not a case of mistaken identity...

Sehana:
I was hoping to join the Rangers, as I have heard much of your exploits."

He grins at the last words, his good humour reviving.  "Yes, and we have new tales to tell, haha.  Sit with us, as we eat with the Earth Witch."

"'Each feather'?  What do you mean, Blue Arm?"  He punches the short rhino brave on his blue arm.  "It's Hoskar who has two feathers."

He turns back to Melock, his attention drawn in a multitude of directions.  "What happened to you, with Earth runes instead of Darkness ones?  It seems you have tales to tell us too."

Sehana:
Sehana turns to Ohanzee and says, "I have had visions about the Wastes regreening, under the watchful gaze of an Earth Knight and his copper warriors."

And back to Sehana, joining that conversation.  "Yes, we Wandering Rangers have sworn to serve Emesh-Ga, the Earth Knight, though I expect you already know that.  You would have seen him entering the Temple grounds with us.  I wear his helm," he taps the helmet on his head, "while Hoskar here bears his shield."

Kobal turns once again, to the other Black Shield brave standing with Tarnessh and Gloaming.  "I am Kobal of the Prairie Thunder bison clan.  Be welcome among us..."

Ohanzee looks up at the tall brave and with a grin speaks slowly "Yeeesss  and   so   do   we.   One" he holds up the Raven feather braided in to the hair on his left, then the harpy feather braided into the hair on his right side "two." The with mock surprise he takes a sharp intake of breath "Hhhhhh You haven't been so careless to have lost your gift have you?!"

"Peat." Ohanzee states solemnly to Melock's question. "Gor Why so, because the serpent gored you?"

He takes a seat as the Earth Witch previously indicated, chuckling to himself as he does so. Turning to her he speaks "There is much to tell of our adventures since leaving here." and he tells a similar tale to the one he told the previous evening to the Red Thorns. This time though he does not leave out the finding of Pallas' lair since the Earth Witch is after all of the Rhino Tribe too. He also spends more time over the details surrounding the marriage of the River to the Earth, the complex there and the door that they could not open as well as the quest and the gift from Whitewood adding "You know of the trapping of Daga. It is a powerful medicine bundle and perhaps one that is best left here for that reason? I also promised that the Rangers would not forget the ceremony and would ensure that future pilgrimages are made to the place. I thought that you should know this in case anything happens to us and indeed in case you wish to send any others there."

He turns to the latest recruits to be "You must come with us to the place of stone tents within the walls. We were meant to return one there to collect her ransom, but her calling was to remain here as a protectoress of the Earth, an axe maiden. It will be useful to have Sun Hawks there to swear to her fate."

At this she laughs loudly, slapping both women on their backs. She seems a different person since last seen, perhaps joining the temple guard of Babeester Gor had solved the fierce woman's problems in life...

Nodding slightly in answer to his other question, Melock stands and is about to speak when Delenda does and can only stare at her, until she laughs and then he joins in. Over dinner the Earth Witch listens to the tale of how the Rangers defeated the Harpies, what occurred at Hoof Crack, the discovery of the ancient river temple, a suspected resting place of a seed of Genert, the meeting with an awakened dryad in a hidden valley, battles with Jack O'Bears and the death of Peat Bog, Gloaming and Hoskar. She pays particular attention to the fact that Amara, Tarnesh and Ohanzee have sworn fealty to the Harpy Queen, concern showing on her wide face.

News that the Rhino Gourge is safe and that members of the Skywatchers had been found gladden her heart and she shows interest in Hoskar's attempt to revive the small Copper construct back in the Mostali tomb.

"For ridding our herds of the Harpy threat I offer each of you the chance to learn a charm of your choice as long as one of us can teach you. It will take a week in all, which I believe you have before Kobal's wedding....I extend this boon to your new friends from the Black Thorn clan."

Then looking at the Earth Witch he asks similarly "Are there any blond haired slaves from the people who stair at Bright Treasure, any who can read their scratchings?"

Amara considered Sehana's words. "There's no trial as such, save the trial of life with having made the vow. You must take a vow, a sacred vow. Witnessed by Lord Emesh Ga himself, and live by those words. We fight chaos and try to restore the green. Nothing more is demanded."

Ohanzee hadn't missed Amara's words and though he doesn't want to offend her he is carrying a weapon he cannot comfortably use. "Amara, your gift is fine and I treasure it all the more for knowing what it meant for you to give it to me."

"I haven't the strength to use it to best effect at the moment though. I think it would be better if you look after it, at least until I have had a chance to build up my arm strength enough to use it properly."

Amara frowned at Ohanzee, looking very uncomfortable. She watched him carefully as she answered him. "Ohanzee, my axe is a gift. I gave it to you not only because I treasure it, but because it represents a symbol of my deeds as part of the rangers. It's seen much blood, but more of chaos than of man. It is copper, sacred to the Earth and all it represents. An axe is more than just a weapon, it is a tool and this particular tool has helped bring about the miracles that we see around this place. For you to ask me to take it back...it implies you do not think very much of me, or of my deeds." Amaras cheeks coloured as she looked away "I know you intended your gift to me for another, I shall return it before the day is out."

Amara looked around, hoping no-one else overheard what Ohanzee had asked of her and quickly left the room, heading back upstairs to the temple.

The young Raven brave runs after the red haired warrioress grabbing her wrist in the tunnel before she can vanish into the women's area "You misunderstand Amara I do not ask you to take back the axe, I ask you only to look after it until I am strong enough to wield it properly."

He bites his lip "You have nothing to prove to me or to any who know you, you've already done that more times than I can remember." He shakes his head "No. I am thinking of us, of all of us and of the Earth. I haven't the strength to wield shield and this axe at the same so it will rest unused until I can build up my strength. Until that time has come it is best for a fine warrior to make use of it and you are the finest we have!"

"Us it, keep us safe, keep me safe and keep it safe until I am ready to wield it and if I can do so with half your skill then it will serve use well in my hand at that time."

He looks at the necklace about her neck and smiles "As for my gift to you, it is true I had another in mind when I found it" he looks up from where it rests between her breasts and his smile broadens "But there were none other in my mind when I gave it to you. And there is no other it would look as fine on."

His face turns a little more serious "You are the first woman I've wed, even though you were the Earth Queen and I the River King at the time, you were still you and I still I. That meant something to me, that will always mean something to me."

"Are we actually wed too, you and me, not the Earth Queen and River King, you and me?"

"I have everything to prove, every day I put on armour. Your place is a given. I have to fight for mine every day. Everyone here has deeds that outweigh my own. The only thing it seems that I can do for the rangers is kill." Amara looked towards the ground feeling ashamed "And even in that respect, I am only an equal of any here."

Amara turned to face away from Ohanzee "The axe is a copper one Ohanzee, sacred to the Earth....and light enough so that a woman such as myself may carry and use it. I don't have the strength of any of those I fight. My greatest strength lies in my head and the way I fight. When it comes down to power and physical force, I would be found to be sorely wanting."  Amara sighed heavily "..and I cannot say if we are truly husband and wife, I do not know. You have your heart set on another...more than one other if your song had anything to say. I do not think anyone would make the sacrifices necessary to be my husband. I married you, yet it was not wholly me. I felt the joy of knowing I was loved, but it was not me and me alone. We passed into the godtime and were wed there. It is something that the Earth Witch would know more about than I. If we were truly wed then, then do I remain married also to the others who played Tada when I acted as the Consort? I cannot say. I know nothing it seems."

Amara unclasped the necklace from her neck and slowly placed it into Ohanzees hand "It might have been mine for a time, but we both know your heart lies elsewhere. The one who takes her place as your wife deserves this more than I."

"I will have more than one wife. I believe it is destined for I have been drawn into two quests that end so. Well three actually and our wedding was the first one. It is also true that I want children, one son at least"
he grins at her "But at least one daughter like you would make me proud."

He looks serious again "I've heard it said that Vingans cannot bear children. But I've also heard it said that they protect all children. When mine come I hope you will be about to do just that."

Amara paused with the necklace in her hand. She allowed Ohanzee to return the necklace without saying anything. "Our lives will not be filled with the happiness that others have. We will know hardship in ways that even others that wander the wastes will not know. I have to wonder if any of us other than Kobal will have time for wives and husbands and loved ones." her voice softened as she continued speaking "I do not know if in the yes of the gods we are married, but it would not be a bad thing in my eyes. I would not be ashamed of it, though it was without the usual fanfare and without the loved ones and family around. You will always have a place in my heart, Ohanzee, for not being afraid to take my hand."

Amara removed her hand from Ohanzee "Vinga is a protector of all. It is just that it is most often women and children that need protected. When you have children, I will guard them as if they were my own." Amara tried to think of something to lift the mood, but nothing came immediately to mind. She smiled softly and then went on her way to the temple.

Ignoring Greeshar's question, Melock nods at Ohanzee and stands up, "I think its time for a tale to be told, of how we cleansed this place." He looks round to see if anyone disagrees. "The whole story is too long for tonight. We had followed the trail of a renegade Red Thorn Shaman, who had summoned Tripanandar to attack our clan, to this place," he spreads his arms wide, "at that time is was a ghost place, forbidden to everyone who isn't a shaman." He swigs from another skin of kumiss to wet his throat, "We arrive at night and even though there were ghost and guards about, we quickly climbed down the side of the big hole and stand before the temple doors by the pool, where we felt the Earth tremble with the power of Gadesha. Greeshar and Whispers from the Sky stood before the door and suddenly they change to become Tada and his Consort, the doors open and standing in front of them are Emesh-Ga and Gadesha, we all bundle through the doors, they disappear and the doors slam shut. The room we are in had been trashed, not only by whatever made the holes but by more recent visitors. From beyond another set of doors we heard Gadesha calling for her lost husband. Being the sneakiest," he grins proudly, "I slipped through the doors and came upon Gadesha standing guard over the entrance to Emesh-Ga's tomb, because of powerful magic, she could not see me and after seeing what was the to be seen, I headed back to the others. While I was busy, the rest of the party was attacked by foul ghouls, which after an intense fight they killed. After a quick chat we decided that, will a little help from the earth magic the Earth Witch provided us," He smiles at the Earth Witch as a sign of gratitude, "I would make myself look like Tada and talk to Gadesha. I then re-entered the tomb and this time I spoke to Gadesha and awoke Emesh-Ga. The others rushed through to the shamans caves," He looks round the room they are in, "This used to be his. They found and killed more ghouls, then they hunted the evil shaman in those caves," he points to the tunnels to the north. "There they managed to corner him and everybody hacked and slashed at him and he brought forth his fetch to attack Greeshar and attack us with magic, but in the end we over whelmed him and Greeshar disembowelled him." He looks around the table at the others, "There is more to tell, but that is the short story of how we clear this temple."

You'll have seen by now we don't really have leaders, so I can't speak for all; but I'd see the temple as a place for all who honour the earth and are foes of the one predark foe. It is the place of the earth, so if the Earth Witch has no problem with this he glances at she whom he mentions I'd even show you round.

By the way, while we're letting you know of our tales I bear news from Condor's visions some days ago. One thing we seek is the White Lance. I saw it fly across the skies before I was restored to life, and then saw it again through vision. Someone said the Hunakti had moved it, and I think they did: it's in a natural bowl somewhere out west in Prax if I saw truly.

He shrugs.

Amara stood at the threshold to the temple, resting the butt of one of her javelins on the ground as she idly drew pictures in the ground. Her mind was a maze of confusion, doubt and some fear. The rangers would grow in number, they already had more waiting to join the band down in what was now the ranger stronghold...and Amara wondered if there was any place left for her. Sighing heavily to herself, she put her troubles to one side, looking around the area to see more of the new arrivals and what had changed since the last time they'd visited.

"Welcome back Amara...and this is Sehana, I saw you arrive yesterday. I am Delenda of the Arinstoli Sable clan, daughter of their Queen and hostage of the Wandering Rangers. Do not be deceived by my happy countenance for I plan to kill them all before the year is out"

Overhearing, Kobal calls out, "We'd better make sure we get a very good ransom for you first then!" as he slowly tries to make his way towards the Earth Witch.  There are some things he'd rather speak to her quietly about, without every Wandering Ranger and Wandering Ranger-to-be hearing.

When he's finally seated next to Noita, he says to her in hushed tones, "Wise One, are you or one of the priestesses able to send word to my family?  Two weddings so close to each other would be troublesome.  There are politics involved in both, I gather, but can you send word of my earlier betrothal to Jella of the Red Thorn and suggest that any marriage to one of the Black Shields be delayed, perhaps for a few seasons?  It would cause trouble for me otherwise.  Besides, I know nothing about the daughter of the Black Shields Khan and have not given my consent.  This has to be done discretely, as I don't wish these new Black Shields braves who have traveled here to join us to think I mean any offence."

Greeshar Longhorn:

Now here we are tarrying, getting lazy and thinking nothing more than celebrating whilst some ugly Red Thorn gets hitched to our hero Kobal..."

Kobal can't help but overhear the always loud Greeshar.  "I am not marrying the enemy," he protests.  "One of the enemy is joining my clan!Stupid Storm Bull.

"And don't talk about my future wife that way, Longhorn."  He tosses a stone - not a large one, but not a small one either - at the big rhino brave.

"I'll ask the Earth Witch to pass on a message to our elders that we will return soon," he adds, before making that very request to Noita.

Ohanzee Shappa:
His attention back to the others Ohanzee states "Clayday, that is the most auspicious day to hold the initiation into the Rangers."

"Each Wandering Ranger has a square shield.  If you do not already have one, you will need time to find, buy or make one," Kobal calls over the conversation.

"That, and beat Akala in a wrestle, haha."

The Earth Temple

Sehana, Hoskar and the Earth Witch head down the southern most tunnel of the cavern, which after winding back and forth opens into what had once been the entrance hall of Emesh-Ga's palace. Though cleaned up since the evil shaman's residence the collapsed walls and ceilings are still very much in evidence. Unlike the coarse rock walls of the Rangers' cavern, this area has obviously been made by human or other hands. The air is filled with the smells of spice and fragrant oils, and the ground well swept.

Since the Rangers' first visit new tunnels had been dug and these entrances were guarded by fierce looking Axe sisters, initiates of Babeestor Gor and defenders of the earth.

They find Amara standing there too, watching the comings and goings of the various acolytes, servants, slaves and priestesses, who at the appearance of the Earth Witch all stop what they are doing to bow.

Noita points out a set of heavy bronze doors to one side, pictures of odd wheeled contraptions drawn by giant serpents adorning their facing sides. In each stands a tall warrior dressed in armour.

"The Tomb and home of both Emesh-Ga and Gadesha  lies that way."

The Wandering Ranger's complex

Those who remain realise that they have only the rest of the evening to accomplish whatever tasks they have to do, before embarking on a week long meditation as they learn spells or attune crystals.

Before departing the Earth Witch said to Kobal that she would see what she could do, though she presumed that putting off the second wedding would likely cause insult. Adding likely to the insult the Black Shield chieftain would feel now that his daughter would be Kobal's second wife. she places a warm hand on the brave's shoulder and with gives him a supporting smile.

"These are difficult times for you. Taking a wife here was the right thing to do, but I fear both your elders and the Black Shield elders will see otherwise."

Ohanzee knows that if he wishes to make a sacrifice to the worm in the lake that they have many Impalas in their band's herd and that it was either now or the day before Kobal's wedding that he had time to do what he planned. He does remember that Salen was interested in finding out what was wrong with the waters. If they were to go now, illumination would be needed, and thus Sun Hawks would be invaluable.

Not having been below of late, tears of joy course down Hoskar's cheeks as he sees the beginnings of transformation.
It was such a mess down here when we first saw it: besmirched with dirt and worse than dirt, a place where one would think Mallia might lurk round every corner aiding the undead of the renegade shaman.

He falls to one knee, blinking and beaming up at the Earth Witch. You and your work are worthy of more honour than we can give he adds humbly.

Turning to Sehana, he adds If the inner place of Emesh-Ga is one you would visit, do not step between - or touch - the four sticks: they ward the centre from mortal interference. Nearly killed some of us before we realised what they were.

Sehana recognises the wheeled contraptions to be the same as was used by Ronance, the fertility god that she has gained a gift of divine magic from. His chariot was drawn by giant snakes as he made his way across Prax, leading the way from oasis to oasis. The figures look different though and are likely to represent Emesh-Ga.

Serpent Fishing... Who's The Bait!

As the Earth Witch leaves with Hoskar and Sehana Ohanzee rises and looks about at the others "Well if we'll be learning spells and then leaving straight after the wedding that doesn't leave much time. So, I'm going to try to communicate with the serpent in the pool down here, see if we can at least come to some agreement with it whereby it doesn't eat any more of us!"

"Salen, you said before that you wanted to find out why the waters hereabouts are so filthy, maybe it knows. Can you go fetch an Impala and meet us at the small pool?"

"It might be handy to have at least one of you Sun Hawks about to shed some light on the situation, especially light that doesn't get extinguished under water."
he continues looking not just at Tarnessh and Gloaming, but also at the remaining newcomer Voras" The latter he looks at "You planning on being a shaman or you path lay somewhere else?"

He smiles "I kind of make this stuff up. I think a great deal of it is in the ceremony, it focuses things on what you want and lessens the chance of getting something else." He grins broadly, his teeth flashing white in the light of the fat lamps, the dark gap of a missing one contrasting markedly. Then with a shrug he adds "But what do I know, I'm just an apprentice. So if you have any ideas to improve things or help them along then don't be shy."

"Oh, and some rope too Salen."

He looks about "So anyone coming?"

"I wouldn't miss this for anything" answers Greeshar, the big brave quickly joined by Sand Fox, Nixa, Leaper and even Akala. Each of the braves obviously excited at the chance of some sport.

Tarnessh turns to Voras "You go and light the cave for them I have other plans with Gloaming here. I need to talk to one of the Priestesses."

There's so much to say. For a start, if you ever need extra strength, brush your hand on the shield here and give it some spirit: it's toughened us for many a battle, saved our lives against some Basmoli once. Come to think of it, watch that lot if we meet any - they're up to no good.

And you mentioned the White Lance earlier, well that's Amara's tale really but it's a rhino relic. Hero light and so on. Used to think it was in Pavis, but now maybe out west. I'd love to see our Vingan wield something like that - she's near unstoppable with that javelin of hers already.

Amara walked alongside the Earth Witch acting as part of her retinue. She was fairly sure no-one would attack her in this place, but given everything they'd seen already, she wasn't going to take chances with the Earth Witch's life.

"For as long as the wandering rangers exist, this place should remain free. If it were to me, I would restore it.... that chaos has tainted this place is a thing which is over. We shall not let it fall again. The Earth is renewed here. This place which was taboo, is taboo no more. We should not dwell on the past, there are lessons to be learned from it, to be sure, but we look forward... to the glory of a restored garden. If it were to me, I would change this place to reflect the new beginning." Amara said, shrugging her shoulders, not that the Earht Witch would listen to anything she said.

"Normally, a man takes a wife, then some time later a second wife, and so on.  Provided there's a gap in time, each wife will know her place in his tent.  The first wife will know she is first, and the second will know that she is second.  If I marry two women close in time to each other, the second will feel that she is second only by dint of (mis)fortune, and only in name, so that the two may compete to be first in substance.  Then my life will be a misery.  My mother told me:
'Happy wife,
happy life'.
But an unhappy wife...
" he shakes his head, "... and two unhappy wives...  This is why I worry.  Besides, I have not even been asked about this marriage to this Black Shield woman.  Please, Wise One, if you can help, I will be in your debt."

He finishes his plea, and withdraws, so that the Earth Witch can guide Sehana and Hoskar into the Earth Temple.

He nods at Sehana's desire to see their captain's tomb. It's another place of marvel he observes; but seriously don't go between the sticks when we get there - they're killers.

As he guides Sehana down the squared corridor leading off from the cavern, he recounts something of its history.

You've met Melock already, of course; well he was first down here. Gadesha the guardian was filled with grief, and it took a Raven's wiles to get through to her. I can't imagine what it was like coming along here alone the first time, not knowing what awaited. Impressive, really.

But then, many Rangers have surpassed me before, and it looks as if you're another one. I too lost a parent at
he swallows hard Moonbroth to a Sable arrow; but it took me the enraged killing of a Sable rider to begin to lose the hatred, and return from death to release my fear. It was a bad path to walk, and if I can help with your memories, I'm here

Putting aside his regrets, he points out wall decorations they'd never really figured out till the two turn the sharp right hand angle to the tomb.

Hail, Gadesha; hail in this place to Emesh-Ga. The bearer of the copper shield brings one who will serve the earth anew he intones at the threshold; whispering I don't know if anyone's home, but don't want to be mistaken for an intruder aside to his companion.

The tomb itself has lost none of its eerie wonder: a sacred and numinous place of itself, four sticks in ward set out from the corners of the copper warrior's square tomb, and to the rear a massive wheeled chariot.

With this place's foes defeated, here the healing began.

The passage to the tomb was dark, with even torches failing to dispel the shadows. The walls were covered with bas relief images of trees, which seemed to creak and sway from an unseen wind. Occasionally, on the edge of vision, movement occurred, branches shifting or the quick flurry of a small woodland creature dashing for cover....

The Tomb on the other hand was brightly lit, the square space filled with lamps, offerings both old and new and the burial belongings of the Earth Knight Emesh-Ga, one time captain of the Wandering Rangers, warriors of Tada, lying scattered around the space.

Hoskar notices that the key he'd found still lay in it's resting place, thus negating the magic of the warding poles that protected the central copper sarcophagus.

At Hoskar's words there is an answering rumble from beneath the ground, but no one appears.

Kobal nods in understanding.  "Khan, we were able to defeat the harpies though it cost the lives of some of our party."  No need to give the Red Thorns all the details.  "Their own shaman summoned a great harpy spirit to assail us, but we bested it, and slew all the foul harpies that we found, young and old.  Truly, the harpies had been consorting with Mallia," he makes a sign of warding against evil, "and it is only because of the aid of the Wise One Dark Claw of the Black Mud morokanth clan (you would have seen him enter with us) that we did not all fall to spirits of disease.  However..."

He leans forward for emphasis, "...we came across other harpies who had not been tainted by the Devil.  These are the ones who have accompanied us here.  They are pure, and bear no Chaos.  Any Storm Bull amongst us can attest to this.  The harpies we killed were dirty and foul, twisted by Chaos.  The harpies which are here are different and their appearance noble.  Though both are harpies, their difference is as sand and water.  These are lead by their Queen Hilimaz Mushen.  I am told by our Lord Emesh-Ga, who walked in the old times, that she is an incarnation of one who soared in the Golden Age.

"She too is a spirit of the Earth, and so wished to come to this Earth Temple.  So we did not bring her to this place.  Rather, she chose to come in any event.  The Queen has great powers, that I have seen myself," he does not mention the revival of some Rangers, "and both your people and my fellow Rangers react to this.  Both our Lord Emesh-Ga and the Earth Witch acknowledge her place and position."  Nor does he mention any concerns.

As he finishes his explanation, he glances quickly back at the two braves beside him, as if the silence from the pair of Sun Hawks is confirmation of the truth of his words.

The Square Tomb

Hoskar Two-Feather:
He nods at Sehana's desire to see their captain's tomb. It's another place of marvel he observes; but seriously don't go between the sticks when we get there - they're killers.

As Sehana leaves the presence of the Earth Witch, she passes back the snake she has been entrusted with. "Thank you once again for your time and patience, great lady."

Hoskar Two-Feather:
I too lost a parent at he swallows hard Moonbroth to a Sable arrow; but it took me the enraged killing of a Sable rider to begin to lose the hatred, and return from death to release my fear. It was a bad path to walk, and if I can help with your memories, I'm here

"That is very generous of you. The loss of one you care about could drive even the most sane person mad." Sehana smiles. "And I am not the sanest of people. Which my mentor, Smokey Jojo seems to take as a good thing. You will have to tell me about what return from death was like. I hope only to be buried once."

GM:
Hoskar Two-Feather:
Hail, Gadesha; hail in this place to Emesh-Ga. The bearer of the copper shield brings one who will serve the earth anew

At Hoskar's words there is an answering rumble from beneath the ground, but no one appears.

"Hail Gadesha; hail in this place to Emesh-Ga. I come, bearing a copper shield, with full intention to serve the Green." That said, she takes her copper shield from her back and intones, "Come forth, Heart-torch, use your concealed might to light this place as though day shown anew.

A light dances upon the shield, at first dim and then expanding, until it is brighter than all the torch-lights. Sehana walks up to the carvings on the wall and runs her hands along them.

Ohanzee Shappa:
"Water to wash and healers needed Quickly!" Ohanzee shouts as they approach "We've destroyed a gelatinous burner but these two are hurt bad!"

Her reverie is cut short by shouts from elsewhere in the complex. Sehana hurries toward them. Once she gets there, she says, "I am a healer," and begins to examine her patients.

Grabbing a leather bucket Ohanzee fills it from the pool and proceeds to drench himself to wash away the remnants of the burning Chaos water, careful that the water does not run back into the poolof clean water. As he does this he thinks about the serpent It was definitely a serpent that took Melock, no burning glob of Chaos. Maybe it moved pools because it was driven out by the Chaos monstrosity, or maybe it is a chaos creature too?

He dips the bucket into the water again to fill and return to the others with but catching a glimpse of the largest of the stinking lakes he pauses he detours to it and looks across the water "The burning Chaos creature from the small pool is destroyed. We will clean all the waters here and that is a good start. If you are Chaos you are next. If you are not then you should be thankful to the Wandering Rangers!"

Sehana thanks Ohanzee for the water, and then gets our her mortar and pestle. She quickly grinds some herbs of pain-root and numbs-the-teeth, then applies the mixture with water to form a salve on Greeshar's remnants of a leg. With Sehana escorting Greeshar deeper in the caves the rest of the Wandering Rangers split up to search the Holes and caverns for another chaos interlopers.

Melock, finds himself in the company of Voras and Hoskar, whilst Ohanzee is accompanied by Leaper and Henal. The rest form their own small groups, joined by the fully healed Sand Fox, who after thanking the Eirithan profusely heads out with a grim look on his face.

Melock, Voras and Hoskar search each of the Rangers' caves one by one.....First the main hall, with it's once bloody altar, alcoves screened by thin pillars of rock and the entrance to the Ghost Hole. Then the store room, room of the oaths and finally the room where Longgrass had been kept bound in a Manul cat.

Each of the caves was empty bar stored equipment of the Rangers, sleeping hides, smoked meat and a feeling of dampness.

Meanwhile Ohanzee and Co stand on the shore of the main lake, watched from the trees by the now awake Harpies. From the light of their burning torches they see that the scum topped surface of the lake is still.

As caves turn up empty of life, verified by occasional detects into hard-to-search places, Hoskar begins to relax. Looks like I'm looking in all the wrong places again he oberves ruefully. Still, better safe than sorry.

His alertness persisting, but now more of the background level one finds always in the wastes and less of the high watchfulness caused by the thought predark might lurk round every corner, he regains a measure of volubility.

First real chance to greet you, Voras. Glad you're here - looked like you made a nice job of the gorp out there. Doubt you'll need it from the evidence so far, but if you ever need some extra power to your arm as a Ranger, just put some of yourself into our captain's shield here.

He grins. I saw you'd already met Melock here. Hope you've been looking after one another.

"Yes, Melock has been... interesting.  I can tell I put him off a bit; that tends to happen with Ravens."

Voras lightly touches the haft of his axe as he glances back the way they came.

"I suppose you're right.  There's nothing here, we'd best return and see what the others have found."

"Its not so much that you're a Sunhawk, its more that we've only just met. I used to be really trusting with new people, but recently, as a group, we've been screwed over a few times." he can't help but glance at Hoskar, "Maybe that's what it means to grow up, you loose your innocence. Growing up my closest friend was Fireborn, we were opposites even before the Feathered Rivals called us in different directions. You being one of four Sunhawk just means I've got to be a bit more creative." He follows the others to the main hole, but doesn't exit the tunnel. When he see's the giant cliff toad he takes a step back, "Even if there was room to us my sling, I don't think it would hurt it much."

"So what are we going to do with him? He can slip into the water as soon as we start hitting him with missiles so unless we can take him out in one go it'll get away."

He scratches his chin "At least it's not chaos. Can't leave it be though, it could slip away and pick off anything it can fit into it's mouth. Shame we can't put a spirit in it and turn it into a guardian."

"Right, let's all go fetch a missile weapon each, put the enchantments we have on all of them and coordinate our shots fill it in one go."

"I managed it before, maybe it can work here. My idea was always that she come sooner or later so just maybe it can be sooner. After all to save such a fine example she might just. It's got to be one of her children and if it is then others can survive here."

The words are flowing from him like water "Come on everyone, leave it be and come to the clean pool, I should think that has the best chance and with all the help you can give it might just work."

It's disgusting inside, the creature's stomach wall conforming to Ohanzee's squashed body. It hurts too as digestive acid begins to burn.

It's far from quiet, with gurgling, half heard shouts and a heart beating strongly, and just in front of the brave's eyes he can see something glowing ever so slightly.

Amara let out an exasperated sigh, rolling her eyes as Ohanzee kissed her. Then the cliff toad's tongue reached out and sucked Ohanzee in. Amara started laughing, despite the seriousness of the situation. reaching to her back, she pulled a javelin from her quiver whispering her charm to make it split in flight and started throwing at the toad. It was too big to risk fighting in hand to hand. Amara had hoped the toad would be smart enough to leave them alone...but as her grandmother said "if you keep poking the fire, eventually you will be burned"...and the time for leaving it alone was over.

Sehana's spine tingles. Here is one of the legendary Wandering Rangers, whom she had just met, dying before her eyes. Still in her full regalia, she has javelins to cast, but she thinks first about Ohanzee, how she would be terrified in his situation.

So, instead she brings out an empty eggshell with a single hole, which she whispers into, "You do not die tonight, Ohanzee. I have already bound this beast so it cannot get away. Your companions, your friends, will save you yet, otherwise call me a liar as a Sun Hawk."

Her speech goes directly into Ohanzee's mind, even as he writhes inside the giant toad's foul gullet.

Then, she readies her first javelin to hurl.

Fighting the Giant Toad.

It all happens at once....

Despite the binding spell the Toad still attempts a jump. It's just leaving the ground when it's thick hide is pierced by several javelins, thrown by Amara, Voras, Sehana and Henal and a disruption spell from Melock where he stands in the entrance to the caves.

It staggers for a moment after dropping back to the floor and with an almighty retch vomits up Ohanzee, who slithers to the ground, unmoving and possibly dead.

Then with one final shudder the toad slumps to the ground, extinguishing the flames and causing the island to vanish in the darkness.

Re: The Giant Finger Holes, the Marriage of Tada.

This is strange, where am I? There is no down, I'm sure there used to be a down but I can't feel the pull of the Earth dragging me down. Every way is the yielding press of... what is it?

Was there pain? I'm sure there was pain, but not now, where has it gone?

A heat all over me, inside me even. I'm sure I was burning up but it's gone, it's... warm, it's comfortable. It's so hard to breath, why am I struggling to breath when I don't need to, it's so warm and... encasing in here.

I'm... not me. I'm... yet to be me. I'm.... That's it, I'm waiting to be born, here in my mother's womb waiting to be.

The eyes of the one who was Ohanzee slowly close for the last time but then within the Darkness a deeper Darkness sweeps past those eyes. I'm not alone! Who's there? Do I have a twin here? There was another I'm sure there was another... a... brother.

Are you there? Who are you?

I am here. I am Eyota

Are my brother?

In a manner of speaking

Why do you have a name? Names are not given until you are born!

You gave me the name. You have many names, you are Ohanzee Shappa, Ohanzee Blue Arm, Ohanzee River King, Ohanzee Chosen of Raven.

There are more names that you are known by but now is not the time. Look, a shiny thing.

There are no shiny things here in our mother's womb, only darkness and warmth and the pressing of her belly all about.

There is a shiny here look
Again a deeper Darkness flashes across his now open eyes and as it passes he notices that there is the faintest of glows within the Darkness.

Ooohh, a shiny! Mother will not mind if I look after it for her. After all she'd not have left it here if she minded. His fingers reach up to his face where it is, the wall off the womb always pressing but yielding enough to allow movement. He touches it, fingers groping around it I'll just look after it. I'll be safe with me.

Nice and safe, nice and safe. That's it, hold it nice and tight, don't slip away now, don't let it slip away now.

Fingers reach around encasing the light in a tight grasp That's right, nice and tight. Don't slip away.

With a tight grip on the light the being who would be Ohanzee curls up into a ball comfortable and safe within his mother's womb and as he does so there is a tug, a ripping, a great spasm.

There is a down again, the pull of the Earth returns, a squelching thump of body hitting land and the curled up naked form.

Cold. It's so cold. I'll sleep.

No, you must stay awake.

I am just born. I have not the energy to wail and the only thing left to do is sleep... now.

The Bright Treasure warms my surface and reflects a myriad of colours as the children play in my shallows, splashing each other, filling the air about with their shrill laughter and the Water below with the same sound though dulled by my form. Throughout me I feel the fish swimming, moving through my body, catfish sifting the murky depths filtering the silt of my bed, others prowling the waters above this hunting the insects that flit along on or above my surface laying eggs, mating or breaking free of me for their time in the air above.

I feel another splash, over by the trees that border my southern shores and briefly my body is entered by a kingfisher, that is gone as quickly as it arrived, fish held tightly in its beak, my surface still indented by the time it is back in the air.

Tap, tap, tap the ever so small immersion of the female dragonfly tails as she lays her precious eggs in my body, trusting totally to the flying prowess of their mates as they hold them in flight and carry them from plant stem to plant stem. Splosh as one such male, the female he carries and the precious load she carries are snatched from the air by a leaping tilapia who in turn it taken by the snap of the pike that sharks through the shadows.

Frogs chirp before leaping into my body and diving for the cover of leaves, as a shadow passes by carried by a pair of long legs feet folding as the enter and leave my body leaving barely a ripple. The stab of a spear-like bill and a fish is dragged out of me struggling for life and trying to breath in the element that contains too much air.

All about and throughout me is the sound, the sight, the smell and the taste of Life and Death, of the cycle as it should be with spirits respected, leaving and returning in good order.

Darga No Nose:
"I hope you are right, though it will take some convincing when other Clans hear that there are Harpies here. It will be Chaos first that crosses their mind. So I expect us to be visited by Storm Bulls before the season is out" replies Darga.

He seems to relish the idea.

Kobal turns to face the father of Nixa and Sand Fox.  "If Storm Bulls come, so much the better.  Then they can speak to the truth that these harpies bear no taint, and bear the word elsewhere.  They would be helpful too in rooting out any Chaos which yet lurk in this place."

Darga No Nose:
"We heard that Black Shields have arrived. Is it true they have joined with your clan? How will this bode for us? Are they planning to move against us?"

"The Black Shields are allies of the Prairie Thunder, and those bonds have drawn the two clans closer.  I cannot speak of intentions.  Firstly, I am a young brave and am not privy to such discussions, nor would it be my place to speak for my clan or the Black Shields.  Secondly, I have been away from my clan for much of the recent seasons, and truly have not heard news for some weeks.Such as my arranged marriage to a Black Shield...  "However, it is my hope that my marriage to your khan's daughter will bring our two clans, and also the Black Shields, together."

Brinna:
"Aye and what about the water in the pools, when will they be cleaned. We are tired of the never ending work to carry water from that small pool in the caves below to water everyone. Thank Waha that it seems to be bottomless and is fresh."

Whilst the others talk Kobal is conscious of their chieftain's eyes resting on him.

Kobal turns back to the priestess.  "Aye, praise to Waha, who first dug a canal, Wise One."  He thinks it strange that the gift of water in this harsh land would ever be seen as a chore, but holds his tongue in that respect.  Maybe it is because he follows the path of Waha while Brinna worships Eiritha.  "The pools will be cleansed in time, I am sure.  But the Temple has limited attendees and we Wandering Rangers have our own duties, both to the Earth Witch and our own clans.  We work so that in future, water will not be so hard to access, either here or anywhere across Prax.  Then will the Wastes need a new name."

Food is brought for the three Rangers and the small groups settle down for a friendly meal, not something that Kobal would have thought possible a season ago. Conversation is kept as unpolitical as possible, with talk of herd health, recent raids and what the Lunars were planning next.

Once more Kobal feels eyes on him and after sometime spies a small group of women watching from just outside the tent's light. He suspects that in their midst is his future wife.

Noticing his look and giving the chieftain a quick glance Brinna suggests "Now that the meal is over why don't you and your friends take some air Kobal?"

Eating with the Red Thorns was not something Kobal expected.  They're not so bad, he thinks, except for that shaman and his followers.  Still, he's not completely at ease as he eats, even though he tries to affect the demeanour of a comfortable guest.

Without trying to be obvious, he peers now and then into the cluster of women to see if he can work out which is Jella.

With a nod, and finishing his last mouthful, he gets up.  "Khan, Wise One, thank you for sharing your food and drink with us.  Unless there is anything else you wish to speak of, we should return to our brothers and sisters.  I think they are even now working on cleansing the pools.  I look forward to my wedding day."

At the spirit's request, Voras turns and moves to retrieve the ensorcelled javelin he cast over to the island before.

Once he has the javelin planted in the earth at his side, he continues to help Sand Fox attend to Ohanzee.

It takes but a moment for another light spell to be cast, javelins recovered and arrange for the Harpies to come and lift the three braves to safety.

Once on the other side, Ohanzee is placed gently on the ground, where his terrible wounds are there for all too see. Except for his blue arm his skin is totally gone, removed by the Toad's digestive juices. Thankfully he's unconscious and oblivious to what has happened.

Landing gently at his side the Harpy Queen inspects the fallen brave. This is the first time  that Melock, Voras and Sehana have seen the feathered creatures up close. The Queen's attendants, white feathered and uncharacteristically clean, surround their leader. Strange bird and human hybrids the women cluck and caw protectively as they mill about.

The queen on the other hand is brown feathered and towers over all present, surrounded by a charismatic magical field that magnifies her beauty tenfold.

"You must get aid. My divine gifts have been used up and he will need special magic for this."

Sehana almost weeps to see what has become of Ohanzee. Though she can hear the Harpy Queen -- and behold all her radiant beauty -- Sehana kneels beside the blue-armed brave and takes out her mortal and pestle as quickly as her hands can fumble them. She delicately places all the paste she can grind on the skinless form and chants as she casts the last of her magics.

He watch's, from the tunnel entrance, with wide eyes as the harpy queen lands with Ohanzee, "Thank you Hilimaz Mushen for bringing my fellow raven back to safety." He looks at Ohanzee and shakes his head while smiling, "Always trying to out do me. It's nothing but a flesh wound." He turns on his heel and runs to the entrance of the temple hoping to find an axe sister who can get the Earth Witch.

Sehana's spells help Ohanzee, bringing the Raven brave to full consciousness and a whole heap of pain, just in time to be joined by an old Impala woman, who coming fresh from healing Greeshar can only sigh and raise her eyes to he sky in exasperation.

"Looks like you boys are going to keep me busy all week. How about you steer clear of the water like we all do, eh?"

She looks at Sehana "You have done a good job, but he will now be scarred for life. Some times it is better to wait and heal everything at once. Though I suspect this one will carry this reminder with pride."

The priestess proceeds to heal Ohanzee's wounds and true to her word the brave's skin, bar his magical blue arm, is now rough to the touch. He's not a pretty sight at all, though she says this will calm down over time...

"No more prodding around the pool young man, you hear me? Old Croak gonna take more than the likes of you to get rid off. Wiley old fella he is."

A funny look comes over her face as she stares at the brave's hands still clasped firmly together

"What you got there?"

Re: The Giant Finger Holes, the Marriage of Tada.

The Copper Man mas not come to speak with me for a long time. He said he must go away to fight a great evil. He tried to tell me of this evil but his words were lost, what do I know of such things, what do I know of going away, I am here, I have always been here, I will always be here.

Screams! The frantic beat of wings and the legs carrying the shadow vanish into the element above. Beasts, humans, birds, I hear panicked cries! What is happening, why do they flee? My surface is shattered in a hundred places as the hooves and feet of the running try to make a run from one side of me to another. No, not through the middle little ones, I'm too deep there, too deep and too wide you are not strong enough swimmers, why do you throw your lives away?

ARGH! What is this feeling along my bank? It is... all possibilities and no future... it is change without no purpose but change itself... it is all corrupting... is this the evil the Copper one spoke of?

It infects those it touches, spreads through them if they give over to it, destroys them if they resist. Run, fly swim, get away all of you! I cannot run nor swim, nor fly, I have always been here I will always be here, I will endure.

ARGH! Deep, I will go deep, too deep for the corruption to follow. Come friends, come with me come deep. I will protect you all, come with me. My surface is touched not by the light of the Bright Treasure now it is covering with the smear of corruption and death. The young ones are trapped now, no where to swim to, the corruption comes from all sides and is nearly upon them. I must save their souls, I must swallow them and keep their souls clean within me to save them.

Come little ones, do not be afraid, swim deep with me and we shall endure together. Deeper, deeper, that's it, do not worry about the air, I will fill your lungs and you can stay safe with me, pure, clean, endure.

No Croak always the greedy one this you cannot eat come deep with me. No! Damn you you foolish creature I told you could not eat that, now it consumes you! ARGH! My old friend is no more, but what he has become even eats me! Deeper, I must go deeper with those I keep safe, deeper, keep clean, keep pure, keep them clean.

Ohanzee sits up gasping for breath and immediately regrets the reflex action "Argh!" His gaze is distant but he slowly focuses as he speaks "I'm here... still here... deep..." He at the old priestess as her words slowly flow into his conciousness "It's still here". He lowers his gaze to his hands and at last opens them "So deep but still endures." and there cupped in his two hands is a beautiful blue gem the size of a tangerine.

Amara stood in shock at the state of Ohanzee. She knew that there was nothing she could do for him to speed him on the way to recovery. A tear streaked down her cheek, as her concerns grew. "If he's not dead, I'm going to kill him." she muttered under her breath. The tensions showing in her posture and eyes....and then he spoke....and at once the relief overwhelmed her.

Amara moved forward to Ohanzee's side and kicked him hard "Don't you ever go doing this again."

Going to make someone the happiest girl alive? he murmurs into space; only to wince as Amara's foot hits raw flesh.

He takes a step forward, as if to intervene, then stops; retreating to his old position and for once keeping his mouth firmly shut.

Amara looked uncomfortable as Ohanzee roared. "It seems like pain itself isn't enough of a teacher for you to stop. What are we supposed to do with you? You go hunting in the places and drag us all into your little plans, whether we wish to or not, to save your hide. I've lost count of the number of times we've had to go save you. You'd be part of the wind many times over if it weren't for us...and do you learn?" Amara scowled, as she got angry at Ohanzee "No, you don't. Some day, you will get yourself into trouble that not even we can rescue you from....and then vaunted River King, you will be nothing."

Amara clearly wanted to hit Ohanzee again, but sighed heavily thorugh her nose and walked just out of reach to avoid the temptation of hitting him again.

From one of the tunnels Salen emerged, frowning and rubbing his head like he'd just been kicked by a Bison, or perhaps a horde of them. He looked like he would throw up at any moment. The sight of Amara kicking someone - Ohanzee this time - was hardly a surprise, but the Raven looked in bad shape himself. It didn't stop the Vingan from getting into it verbally...which made Salen smile through his own discomfort.

Amara finds herself surrounded by four of the High Llama Axe sisters , long handed axes held at her neck.

Yes, you healed him this time, but the kick I gave him wasn't going to kill him. I am appreciative of the aid you provided to him. My kick was intended to hurt him and serve as a reminder of the number of times I and others among us have hauled him from danger. There was no need for him to go poking his nose into the cliff toad and once again, the man without thought managed to get himself into trouble. Why are you concerning yourself in the business between a husband and wife. This does not concern you. Go away."

Amara hissed as the Axe sisters drew close "I am telling you once more. This is none of your concern priestess. If you had to rescue him from situations of his own devising, time after time, you might be upset at his constant lack of regard for his own life and the lives of those who go rescuing him. What I did here, was remind him that every time he does this, he puts more than his own life in jeopardy." Amara drew her sword "Now if you really want to start something here, then so be it."

Still shocked at Ohanzee's scream, Hoskar is again slow to react, standing blankly at first. Salen's words, however, penetrate his numbness and his memory flashes back to a campfire. Standing there saying nothing, Krakka and Amara glaring, no words of peace coming, disorder to follow. Learn, man, learn from past mistakes.

Calm heads, Salen? Yes, I suppose so. Sorry, Melock: need to make this one less interesting if I can.

Shouldering forward, making Issaries's rune with fingertips as he goes he stands as close as he dares to the argument, and speaks quietly in measured, calm tones.

Mercy and pardon we beg. That which seems ill can be fair: care in healing and care in teaching I have seen here, the smooth and the rough but two sides of a coin just as the earth cries out for healing and protection through the green.

In respect for the temple, for healing, and for the earth we cannot
he lays down the Earth Knight's shield reverently upon the ground miss our grasp on one another. In respect for the sword of the protecting wind he unbuckles his father's sword, laying it equally carefully atop the shield we hold that the sword also saves.

He looks around, increasingly astonished at his own temerity.

Each day now, as I take up these tools from the earth and for the earth, I hope to honour all in work for the green.

His face increasingly nervous, glances flitting around, his voice cracks and nearly dries up.

I'm sorry. What is the price of harmony? he husks as his words peter out and he bends down; maybe in respect or maybe to retrieve the items he placed down.

Recovering a little Ohanzee raises his head from his knees, which he notices for the first time look rough and indeed feel rough to the touch. He frowns in thought trying to work out what has happened to him and as the realisation dawns and Leaper's words finally break through to his thoughts he looks up to see all of the people gathered about.

Apparently oblivious to recent events he looks from face to face noting the strange situation of Amara surrounded by axe wielding Temple guards and picks up on the obvious tension in the air. The young brave looks up at the bat flapping near by You better tell me what happened some time!

Then he notes Hilimaz Mushen standing close "Greetings My Queen. I hope you and your flock are well." and his eyes move to the diminutive Impala Priestess and he echoes Leaper's words "Hello Earthfoot." he glances at his rough skin "You doing? It looks rough... like the Earth. It is fitting." There is perhaps the slightest edge of uncertainly in his voice.

"Thank you for your ministrations, I am in your debt twice over now" he glances at the bat "Though best not to talk of the first time in front of Umbra"

Ohanzee lifts his left hand opening it again to reveal the very large blue gem properly he looks at it and speaks, perhaps in answer to the Priestess's earlier question or perhaps just because he has this to say "Bisud'dha Pani endures. Chaos came but it could not destroy her and it could not corrupt her. She went deep and she stayed pure. So Chaos did the only thing left to it, it trapped her below."

He looks about catching the eyes of all present "Bisud'dha Pani is still here. She endures trapped by Chaos but this is why her pool remains clean. This is why her waters never run dry."

The young brave stands a little unsteadily wincing at the pain in his new skin "I must go to her pool."

Ashfoot Earth Healer stalks over to Amara, barely coming up to the brave's waist, and proceeds to give her a dressing down, which includes the need of respect to her elders, less self importance, the none kicking of injured husbands and the prospect of a weeks cleaning of the temple grounds under the watchful eyes of her four new axe wielding friends. There's a hint of inter tribal dislike going on and an overbearing attitude not helped by her stature.

She has a point though. Priestesses were at the top of their game and to be shown respect and despite their celebrity status the Rangers were still a long way off from standing on equal footing with heads of their cults.

Still the fire eventually cools, helped no doubt by Hoskar's attempts at Harmony which is acknowledged with a nod.

Then she's gone, not giving Amara a chance to speak. Her sword is returned and the Axe sisters follow the Impala Priestess back into the Temple. Not before the old woman gives Ohanzee a big list of what to do and what not to do and that he should be careful with the gem for it was an item of great power and if he'd any sense he'd hand it over to those who knew better. She winked then, knowing full well that there was more chance of Genert rising up here and now, than that happening.

Ohanzee Shappa:
"Hello Earthfoot." he glances at his rough skin "You doing? It looks rough... like the Earth. It is fitting." There is perhaps the slightest edge of uncertainly in his voice.

"Thank you for your ministrations, I am in your debt twice over now" he glances at the bat "Though best not to talk of the first time in front of Umbra"</green>

"You are welcome Ohanzee Bluearm. Just try and be more careful. Old Croak is a fearsome beast it seems."

She's interested in what he has to say of the water spirit and agrees that he is on to something there for sure, but that he would be wise not to over exert himself.

"So it has a name and still lives. We suspected as much but could find no trace of her, despite the clean pool.
This might be best left until you have a better understanding of what it is you have."
Then seeing that he has made his mind up she departs shaking her head.

With Ohanzee restored again, Salen decides it is a good time to seek out the two new Sun Hawks. He tracks down Sehana and Voras and introduces himself - typically, he eschews tradition in doing so.

"Hi, I'm Salen, welcome to the Wandering Rangers."

Maybe they already knew he was the younger son of Tamarisk Soft Foot, the master hunter, brother to Bull's-Eye Rakas, and direct descendant of Vetash Boar Bane. Maybe they didn't. They could always find out, at some point, if they so chose - it seemed an irrelevance to the Condor at this time, and there would always be opportunities to share later.

For now, a more pressing matter. Salen showed them the small flame-coloured gem, warm to the touch and magical.

"Perhaps you two could cast a bright eye over this gem we picked up on our travels? It looks like an item of Fire. What do you think?"

Umbra flaps close about Ohanzee You look like shit and you can barely stand. Still if you say you are up to it you must be right. After all you're wiser than her, you're never wrong!

Ohanzee staggers a little and looks towards the Ranger's area, then at the bat and finally turns to the retreating form of the priestess "Thank you for your words of wisdom. I need rest at least and a little more time will not matter after such an age already."

"Ohanzee, you look like you've been dragged along a dry riverbed backwards. Time for you to settle and rest now you escaped being toad bait". Henal says and starts walking back towards the Ranger's area.

"In fact it might be good for all of us to be rested before we have to start learning new magic."

Amara growled at Ohanzee "If you go doing that right now while you're still as injured as you are, I truly will make you wish you'd never been born." her eyes softened "Look....I know you're as eager as I am to see this place restored...just wait until you're better."

Having picked up his kit in all humility, Hoskar has been doing his best to seem inconspicuous as the situation eases. Don't push your luck, man.

Shaking his head ruefully, he finally murmurs Yes. We care. Rest and healing. Something to smoke, perhaps Ohanzee? Won't help, but might make you care less about the pain?

Amara watched Ohanzee struggle with moving, her eyes darkly watching Ohanzee with conflicted emotions, given the severe dressing down the Eirithan priestess had given her. . She bit her lip, chewing on it as she thought for a minute before asking "Do you need any help?"

Amara felt a pang of pain, knowing Ohanzee didn't want her around. She deserved it, but she thought he'd know she had his best interests at heart. Still chewing on her lip, she decided to leave him be. If he wanted her to be around, he would let her know.

Amara watched Ohanzee and Melock leave, hoping that neither would do anything stupid, but realising that together, the chances of that happening would be low. Resigning herself to another day of being on her own, Amara left looking for some place to be by herself so she wouldn't disturb anyone.

Smiling sympathetically, Hoskar nods. Coming right up. Think I can do you a mix of that and tobakeh that will leave thyings drowsy but not totally absent. He lowers his voice just in case you need to do any more dodging.

At a brisk pace, he heads off to blend a blend; returning soon with a pipeful which he hopes will see his comrade right...or at least less conscious of hurt.

The gem seems familiar to Voras as he inspects it, so he asks Salen to allow him to inspect it more closely.  Examining it from several angles, feeling the heat, and observing the twisting paths of the light through the gem and the flame inside, he feels confident enough in his conclusion to share.

"This is an eye of Genert's companion Yamsur.  I'm unsure exactly what it does, but I remember images of those with a flaming third eye on their foreheads.  Perhaps someone else might know more?"

"I've heard of the Eyes of Yamsur, though they were legend though" answers Leaper coming closer to look. "Magic crystals made from his blood. Rare as a hot day in Storm Season."

When the crystal flares to life in Voras' hand Salen's eyes momentarily widen in surprise, and he smiles.

"Whatever it does it clearly recognises a kindred soul! Why don't you hang on to it? It may be far more potent in the hands of a Sun Hawk than any of the rest of us."

He shrugs, "just if it'd been me that had been inside a giant toad and had most of my skin burnt off, I probably wouldn't be too happy."
