Oath taking in the Earth.

It's pre dawn Clayday, Truth week of Earth Season, a day that couldn't be more symbolic for those about to take oaths to join the Wandering Rangers, soldiers of Tada and defenders of the Earth.

The passages of the Cavern complex glow with the magic of the day, as the Rangers troop through them, leading the way for the two newest recruits Voras and Sehana of the Black Shield clan; the clouds of incense swirling from their passage in intricate patterns of Earth and Movement.

Everyone is daubed in Ochre, with runes of power adorning their naked flesh, their weapons and square shields held proudly as each brave pushes their way through the crowd that has come to listen to the rites.

Drums beat steadily, played by a group of Agimori men and one woman, the Ten Tall men, who had arrived late the previous evening in time to join the last of Kobal's wild celebrations that had run all day. They had spoken little, except to Tarnessh, who spent several hours in close conversation with the odd group.

Now passed the expectant crowd, the braves enter their room of Oaths, the rock walls painted with an interlocking pattern of Earth Runes and where a choice selection of materials and loots from the exploits lie before a rough square block.

Before it stands Emesh-Ga his spectral head brushing the roof as he stares down at each of the Rangers as they file in to take their positions about the room.

"There are those present who wish to join our sacred ranks?" queries his deep bass voice "Who will vouch for them and announce their presence?"

Remaining in place, not speaking first Seems unfitting to presume here, Hoskar waits till another has spoken before adding his word in measured tones.

Two-Feather for Condor, honoured to be shield-bearer, assents. Already the spirit moves. Sehana heals the warriors for their task, Voras adds his voice to theirs earth-speaking in truth. In the trust for the green, I believe these are Rangers in heart.

He inclines his head in respect, but his eyes belie his formality; twinkling happily as he glances at Voras and Sehana.

"Welcome Voras, warrior, both brave and just. I am Emesh-Ga guardian and one time Captain of the Wandering Rangers, warriors of the Earth who served great Tada himself.

Do you promise to not let chaos live?

To nurture the land we stand on?

And to strive to make it whole once more?

To stand with your Brothers and Sisters, through good and bad?

Kobal nods at Voras' response, and steps forward from his place among the Rangers, who had formed a square around the inductees.

In his hand a knife and a ceramic bowl.

"Look around you," he says to the two Black Shields braves.  "We Rangers are from different tribes.  Different clans.  Even rival clans.  We follow different spirits and gods.  Yet all of us have sworn ourselves to Emesha-Ga and his mission.  By joining us, you must stand with your brother and sister Rangers, no matter their tribe, clan or god."

Crouching down next to Voras, he takes the brave's right arm, and with four strokes cuts a square into the bicep.  As the incisions weep with blood, he takes some clay from the bowl - the best clay he could find in these caves - and smears it into the cuts, so that a square scar will remain after the bicep heals.  Offering a hand to Voras, he draws the Black Shield to his feet and takes him in a hug.  "Welcome among us, Ranger."

Stepping back, he waits for Sehana.

Re: Oath taking in the Earth.

It's not an auspicious day for oath taking and the magics of the ceremony would be weak, but the Rangers had no time to spare.

The cave put aside for the purpose of the bands' ceremonies and meetings had been decorated and improved since the last visit, with  the floor covered with skins and the simple square altar adorned with offerings and slick with gifted oil. The walls with their interlocking runes now had murals depicting the adventures of the Wandering Rangers, painted not only as a memorial but as an incentive to those about to join...

Cones of incense smouldered in small copper dishes whilst fat lamps gave off a weak light, their strength increased slightly by the arrival of Sun Hawk followers. From deeper within the caves comes the deep beat of drums being played by the women of the Earth, who were lending their magic to help force back the darkness.

Kobal steps forward with a knife and a bowl of clay in his hands, and addresses the assembled group of Rangers (rather than those who wish to join).  He wears the helmet of Emesh-Ga (as always), but now it seems just a bit more polished.

"In the past I have lead the ceremony to initiate newcomers to our band.  But there may be times when I am not around - our band is growing, and now some of us will move on to Pavis, while others remain behind.  Is there anyone here today who would like to do the honours?  Maybe it would be good for a Condor, or a Sun Hawk or a Raven to lead the ceremony.  This is not a role only for Thunderbird.  But no funny business..."  He scans the group, trying not to look hard at the Ravens with the last sentence.

Re: Oath taking in the Earth.

Amara stepped forward, her body covered from head to toe in the ochre. The only things detracting from the ochre were her hair still as crimson as ever, and an earth rune, softly glowing green on her forehead.

"I will stand for them. We have many that seek to join our number, for as we grow, the legends of the rangers grow, and the green may return more swiftly. All seek to be judged by Emesh Ga and found worthy of the name Wandering Ranger.

Temush blinking cloud, Khan of our ever faithful allies, the Big Peckers. Where others have talked of fighting chaos, his clan fought broo until almost all were gone. The bravery of the Big Peckers is legendary and I vouch for Temush to have a place among us.

Penga Three toes, once thought lost to us, but returned as a brave of the Skywatchers. Beloved of Eiritha. Fierce in battle, I vouch for Penga to have a place among us.

The whisper of the knife, a good hearted soul, and handy with his blades. He has always a smile and a good heart and I vouch for the Whisper of the Knife to have a place among us.

Rinhart the stout, as brave as he is gregarious. His words and laughter greet all and make all welcome. I vouch for Rinhart the stout to have a place among us.

Fellar Three Hoops,
Baram Greeneye,
Panurge,
Kitsune, wanderer and entertainer, she fights where she sees those who have been touched by chaos and as such. I vouch for Kitsune to have a place among us.
Wassen-Me"

Amara paused as she spoke each name out loudly, pointing to each of the candidates in turn.
"Each of these people have talked the talk and walked the walk. Each are worthy of the name Wandering Ranger. Each will add to the glory of our name and return this place to the Green."

She looked at each of the candidates solemnly "The path of a wondering ranger is not an easy one. It will take you far from home, it is a path filled with violence and misery, yet it is one which could see the Green returned to the Wasteland as it has around this place. It is a demanding path....and one that may result in your death, but it is not without it's own rewards. As we garner glory to our names, the rangers benefit. As we gather wealth to our names, the rangers benefit. As one of our number, all of our successes are your successes to. I will fight for you, and gladly place you at my side. I would die for you, and lay waste to all chaos around in doing so. If you are ready to continue... shout with all of your hearts "FOR THE GREEN", feel the love for the land and your fellow rangers and take the vow with Emesh Ga as your witness."

Having been uncharacteristically quiet too; maybe following Salen's words over Condors and leading, maybe pondering things he alone has seen of late, maybe just finding muddied runes daubed upon him less comfortable than those unfamiliar with towns and baths, Hoskar nods, breathes in, places both hand upon the shield of Emesh-Ga he has planted before him upon the earth, and finally speaks; albeit not for long.

Bravely spoken he intones. We are both axe and shield for the earth. The axe may cut through to the green, but the shield must be known. Must not turn in the hand. Must be known foursquare.

Welcome.

Stoking up a celebratory pipe, Hoskar's mundane nature kicks in a moment. Three things before we lose it. Things you must know or we likely perish. One. Someone yells Form A Square, for earth's sake form a battle square. Blesses us in combat to have the rune. Two. Need more strength for hitting, touch this shield and give of yourself. Three. Need healing, Sehana's our best but crawl my way otherwise.

Having finished preparations, he adds with a lopsided smile That's the end of me being formal. Smokes? Grabbing a skin unceremoniously he swigs deeper than observers might expect, then passes it on only to light the pipe and inhale gratefully; holding the breath for a clear half dozen heartbeats before exhaling and offering it on...sort-of in Wassen-Me's direction yet sufficiently vaguely for others to step in...and observing when I'm relaxed enough, I'll tell you what I learned here. I advise you all to get relaxed too. Even those who usually don't. You're not going to like this one little bit.

You're right of course, Kobal he murmurs, but I'll have to hope the lady Angelika will forgive me this one - too grim to retell entirely sober.

Holding his head between his hands, he continues in a subdued monotone it's nothing that happened here as such. Only stuff that's happened here is me trading with Goodfeather for training - I'm better at sensing thieves than I was, and know more about where we're off to, and hear Krakka might be in Pavis. There was no sign of the Red Thorn Shaman, and Bigmouth was no trouble. I hope he won't be miserable now he has a job here.  It's what I saw on the way in, and what Erish-El made of it when I told her.

Had a vision. Chaos harpy. Vast thing carrying living-dead heads. Entourage around her. Vile.
This time he can't repress a shudder. Woke up close to having another Repe Sorsa moment. Harpy and her heads were looking for something. Felt like it was me...or us...or maybe the source of the green. Hoped it was a dream not a vision, but no such luck. Erish-El recognised the description and it's the only time I've seen her shocked. Utterly shocked. Says it's her sister from the place of statues out east; malevolent beyond knowing and aware Erish-El escaped and looking for her. Ill intent and probably coming like a plague against her and the green when she finds...her...us...whatever she's looking for.

At the edges of fires when I was meant to be asleep, on the margins of camps washing pots, I have heard the name El-Enlli mentioned by strong braves who turn pale and cast protective magics at the sound of the name. It's her and one day she's coming gods preserve us.

He sighs deeply before releasing his hands from their fervid grip upon his cheeks, leaving behind the red crescent marks of fingernails that had bitten deep into skin, he takes a further swig and straightens his back in determination. Good Word, eh?

Still. Doesn't affect our duty now. Doesn't affect our likely duty for the future. Does mean we'll be up against powers best left undisturbed and the stuff of nightmare one day.

An equivocal smile plays momentarily on his lips before fading. There's worse things than death, and as long as we can rely on each other not to let our heads be taken death is the worst that might happen. So we'd best just get to it I suppose.

Stoking up a celebratory pipe...

Almost in an instant Salen is stood next to Hoskar, and just about bides his time until the pipe is passed. Then he takes a looooong draw...and just about remembers to pass the pipe along. A good minute goes by while the Condor brave closes his eyes, keeping the smoke inside, before he slowly exhales and looks around, smiling. He reaches for the nearest kumiss skin and takes a long draw from that too, but much quicker. Then he sits down and listens to Hoskar's tale, nodding, before confirming some details.

"Statues...storms from the east. Saw it through Condor we did, eh?"

Shivering slightly despite not being cold, and despite the three good swigs of kumiss, Hoskar manages a sad nod. I imagine you're right there, Salen; although of all the things to say Wotcha to, that one wouldn't have been my first choice.

Declining a further swig from a skin with a glance towards Kobal , he mutters anyone got questions? I really don't want to revisit this more often than I have to.

Hoskar closes his eyes a moment, clenching his left fist with furrowed brow; pain etched for all to see across his face.

For a moment, he looks to be gathering himself for blows or angry words. He opens his mouth. Then closes it. Then looks helplessly up to the cavern's roof. Then giggles as he accepts the flask unquestioningly and sips.

Not fair he splutters. Coughs. Fights for breath as laughter takes control. Damnit you bugger you're too good at this.

Sagging slowly, seeming to melt down the wall like an expiring candle, he murmurs Release. Thankyou. His eyes half closed, he remains slumped, looking more content than he's been since the Rangers arrived.

Kobal nods grimly at the news.  Hoskar is no Thunder Bird, but he's not a coward either.  They'll have to be ready.

"'One day'?  We're escorting the Snowspear.  If there's a chance these harpies attack, we need to let her know.  She might change her plans, gather more escorts maybe.

Re: Oath taking in the Earth.

In reply to Kobal (msg # 53):

Refocussing with a calmer expression, glad to be thinking of something other than the vision, Hoskar manages a weak smile that stays put.

Well, Kobal, truth be told I had to keep my head down in the temple mostly. The Red Thorns weren't exactly welcoming. Like I said, something of a dust-up on the way in with Jarga and his group and I scooped up the duck and the finder coming in. On my own out there wouldn't have been pleasant and all my diplomatic hopes came to nothing.

In here, I know Poi...um...Goodfeathers and Hommi have negotiated a commission for Erish-El but don't know what it is. I know the temple's been undisturbed. I barely knew there was a fight coming till Erish-El mentioned your approach. I assume the tribes thought twice about the river when they head the Shepelkirt's mob was swarming round there. Rumour had it the Red Thorns were breaking camp before our tribes arrived, and I briefly heard drumming with some sort of howl like a wolf or hyaena granted the speech of a man, but you probably heard that too.

Most of the time, I've been studying diagrams, having people creep up on me to train my senses for thieves and suchlike. Felt like a Lankhor Mhy some days. Some of what I learned routinely should help us stay in one piece inside the walls, but won't make much sense till we get there.

To be fully honest, I learned one other thing but under a vow of such weight to personal secrecy I cannot share it. I guarantee you it is nothing that would affect the safety of the Rangers or of the Lady Angelika or that not knowing would affect the greening.
I am thinking what to do on that. If I can find the right thing to ask Emesh-Ga, maybe I can keep the oath without keeping the secret; but I've not thought of how yet. Please don't press me on this - can't say more on pain of divine disfavour.

His smile has fallen away as this speech has progressed; and he now concludes with a tense yes. Angelika must be told of the threat. I can do it if I must, though I'd hoped this telling would be the last.

Hoskar shakes his head sadly. Sorry, Ohanzee, but I can't think what more to tell you. It didn't sound like your friend the Hyaena: much more wolfish, no cackle to it, but equally feral. Yet instead of that long, low moan of an animal it was shorter, more stabbing. Had the cadence of words, but no words I for one could pick out.

As for anyone above? Only the Red Thorns I know of...unless you fancy asking the Barbeester Gor women whether any of them happened to be outside. Or you could try Erish-El: she sensed your approach so she might well have sensed whatever-it-was too if she wasn;t too caught up thinking about the worse news.

Amara smiled as she walked to the ceremony. She'd always enjoyed seeing people join their band. It wasn't an easy group to join. The green was advancing but they were losing close friends and family at an alarming rate. Amara gave some thought, wondering if it might be easier to split the rangers into different groups, as the rangers grew there would no longer be a need to constantly pit their numbers against overwhelming odds. Today Grundar would be joining their number, at least he was prepared for the chaotic dangerous nature of what it took to be a ranger.

Re: Oath taking in the Earth.

Eiritha Holy day

The courtyard of the temple is crowded on this holy day, with herd beasts as well as humans. There's a fair crowd of locals too, standing in the street and atop nearby buildings. They'd be plenty of sacrifices made today by Pavites hoping to appease the local gods and spirits. Blood soaks the ground and music fills the air whilst folk shout out praise to the goddess.

As soon as the Wandering Rangers cross the threashold Emesh-Ga materialises drawing gasps from all present bar the small group of priestesses, shamans and priests standing just inside the entrance.

Bargains had already been made and donations given so the braves are expected.

The temple is filled with the smoke from half a dozen incense braziers, the smell of the plains and that of the earth, freshly turned...

Spirits glide about the throng...touching...grasping...whispering ancient secrets

Centre in the room a tunnel into the earth has been made and with a nod the temple hierachy heads downwards beckoning the Rangers to follow...

Amara slipped the boots from her feet, tucking them into her belt. In any other place she'd have left them in the threshold of the temple and know they were safe, but this was Pavis and full of thieving Lunars. On a day like today it felt good to be one with the Earth. Amara walked gracefully towards the entrance, her stride like that of her Manul. She could feel the vibrancy of the Earth wanting to return. Her eyes lit up, filled with delight, almost mischievous as she moved into the tunnel.

Grundar follows as beckoned, eyes wide and feeling like a giddy child. Since his sister went missing, he has felt a void, a lack of place or family, and whilst Pavis excited him for a while, and the thrill of the games kept him occupied (and on the run!) the arrival of the Rangers has provided him a sense of belonging. It will be good to become officially part of their number. The sights and sounds and smells are a little overwhelming. He takes a deep breath and tries to focus and stay calm, and then sprints to catch up with Amara.

And finally, it was time. Amara looked around, to see all of the Rangers gathered and the hulking shape of Emesh-Ga shimmering, as the dust motes in the air passed through his form. She looked at each of the rangers in turn, acknowledging them all with a quick smile. She was expecting Kobal to take the lead, but in this case, it might be right given her connection to the Earth forged with her marriage to Ohanzee.

She moved to the center of the room, banging the haft of her axe against the wyvern hide shield. "Lord Emesh-Ga, great warrior of the copper people and guardian of the garden. We seek your blessing. We have one worthy to join our number present. He is a warrior, true and proud and committed to see the return of the Garden."

She motioned to Grundar to step forward and join her in the middle facing the other Rangers. "I present to all of you Rangers, Grundar. He is as a brother to me and we have shared camp fires, stories and khumiss together. He is kin, in the same way that all of the Prairie Thunder, the Skywatchers, the Big Peckers and the Black Shields are kin. He has shown bravery in battle and is worthy to join our number as a Wandering ranger. He is dedicated to restoring the garden to its rightful state." Amara shouted glaring, almost daring anyone to contradict her statement, before deciding to step to one side and give someone else a turn to speak.

It is not with shame, that we stand here to ask your help in returning to the bosom of the Earth mother, but with anger. One of us has been taken Stolen from our midst. And for the sake of Eiritha, Ernalda and Babeester Gor, we will have her returned. I follow Vinga, so for me this is a sacred duty, for many of you it might not be, but in a situation like this, who is to say who the next priestess, or initiate might rank from those you follow. Her captors showed no fear of anyone, until I turned up and made him run here. A priestess from the High Llama Tribe indicates that Amara should follow them once the oath taking is finished, it looks like she agrees with what the Ranger had to say.

As Grundar takes his oath, Melock grins at the thought of another Raven amongst the Rangers, but his grin vanishes when Amara speaks to the keen onlookers and talks about their missing friend. When the nine step forward, a feeling of pride flows through him for being a part of something that others not only see as worthy but also want to join. Melock casts an eye over the new braves to see if any follow the Feathered Rivals.

Re: Oath taking in the Earth.

Amara beamed with pride at the braves who'd chosen to join their number and was well satisfied that her appeal had been heard by more than a few in the crowd. Earth magic might give them enough of an edge to win against the trolls. Though she wondered how many of the new rangers might balk at the idea of fighting the Uz. She greeted each of the new rangers asking them about their origins and skills once they'd taken the oath.

But a high llama priestess? That might be a really valuable person to know well. Amara was surprised. Some of the things she'd hoped for at the wall, might start falling her way.

There's a bit of a commotion though as four of the braves are refused by Emesh-Ga, they are Sable nation and the ancient spirit finds their reasons for joining to be false. Despite some jeering and pushing from the newest recruits the four braves leave without trouble.

The remaining five are Bison riders, clanless by the looks of it, outlaws each and everyone, but Emesh-Ga has accepted them and they now have a new home.

All wear the feather of Thunderbird in their hair.

Emesh-Ga:
"Welcome Grundar, warrior, both brave and just. I am Emesh-Ga guardian and one time Captain of the Wandering Rangers, warriors of the Earth who served great Tada himself.

Do you promise..."

I promise! declares Grundar, pride rising in his chest. I promise! I feel the call! He looks back to his friends for their approval, and sees Amara's acknowledgement and Melock's smile. As other braves step forward, he places his hand on their shoulders in turn in encouragement and then for some in welcome as they to are added to their number, and to others in consolation as they are not. Being first, he feels it is his responsibility as the one with 'experience'.

Re: Oath taking in the Earth.

Amara felt crestfallen as some of the braves had to leave, but it was for the best. She'd prefer to have someone willing to stand at her side and Emesh-Ga was the best judge of those fitting enough to be rangers. She'd hoped to draw some more variety to their ranks than having only warriors, but it was better to have strength as their numbers grew. Soon they'd need smiths and craftsmen too.

She wondered if she went to the Orlanthi temple if she might persuade any Vinga followers to join the cause.

Grundar responds joyously to the pats on the back and the congratulations. It feels great, he thinks to himself, to be a part of something again. He hadn't realised how much he'd missed his fellow-tribe members since leaving them in pursuit of his sister, but now, with that gap filled by the Rangers, he finds himself truly happy again, at least for now. Not that winning at knucklebones and fighting fish wasn't fun of course!

Mulling over these things he misses the whispered exchanges between Ohanzee and Melock, and suddenly realises he's been left standing on his own. He grins to himself for being soppy and absent minded, and wanders off to try and find them...

The initiation over, Kobal greets Grundar with a firm but friendly headbutt.  "Welcome amongst us again, brother," he smiles.

He claps some of the other new Ranger recruits on their shoulders.  "Brothers!  It's good to have more Bison braves in our group."  He looks around to make sure Ohanzee, Melock and Grundar aren't within earshot.  "Those Ravens are a handful.  Like trying to herd hyenas, haha.  The more Thunderbirds the better."  His tone turns more serious, looking each brave in the eye.  "I see that you're exiles.  But our Lord Emesh-Ga has accepted you, and welcomed you.  And you have given your solemn oaths in return.  Whatever you did in the past, our Captain has overlooked, and so do we.  So we Rangers welcome you as well."  He spreads his arm to motion towards the rest of the Wandering Rangers.  "As you can see, our group transcends the tribes and the clans, just as the Feathered Rivals transcend the tribes and clans.  Hold your heads high again!  Now you have new family.  But honour your new bonds."

He hefts the shield he bears.  "You will need to find yourself a square shield, one of the markers of our band."

The crowd parted, willingly or otherwise, and there indeed stepped forth Salen, and as ever Mordy was right at his heels. He looked a little wiser, or perhaps more focused, or perhaps it was simply the absence of a cloud of smoke around him that made everything about him seem a little sharper - likely a temporary state, but noteable none the less.

He took a long look around at the new faces, and then turned his gaze on the older, more familiar ones. Salen smiled.

"Wotcher. More sacrifices for the greater good, huh?"

He introduces Salen to the new bison brave recruits, pausing, waiting for each brave to name themselves.

Amara returns later from the ceremonies held below ground having secured the promise of help in the upcoming raid on the Troll lands. Several axe sisters will accompany her and she has been given a satchel filled with healing salves and potions to use as she sees fit. The three followers of Babeestor Gor have appropriate magics for fighting and have sworn to not rest until Delenda is free from Zorak Zoran. Until the Rangers decide to leave they will remain at the temple.
