By the River

Melock can see that Amara is pinned down behind the beached boat. Every now and again a cross bow bolt etiher slams into the boat or flies over head.

Knowing that nothing he carries can reach the other side, Melock can only watch helplessly as the crossbow bolts fly past Amara.

The Bandit's Crack

"Oi, me hat if you please!" he says to Orlan catching it when it is thrown back and then nodding and gesturing his thanks. Then though he pauses, a strange look on his face before shrugging and turning away.

Amara sighed from behind the boat where she'd taken cover. "If you want to live, I'm willing to let you go right now." she wasn't expecting much from this conversation. It seemed as though everyone they'd met preferred death to coming to terms.

The Bandit's Crack

Temush Blinking-cloud:
Temush shrugs but meets Kobal's stare  with his own."Kids don't need to freeze chief, twit for a dad or not. Plus I like it when we don't kill all the folks we meet. It might be nice if one or two had a good word for us."

Watching the bandit run off, Kobal replies, "We didn't kill him.  And the only good word people like him need to have for us is that the Wandering Rangers keep their word."

As they climb out of the cave, he returns to an earlier subject.  "Ohanzee, what's with your eyes?  Is this a permanent change, or a spell you cast?"

In reply to Henal Longgrass (msg # 930):

Gods know yawns Hoskar wearlily. Think they were chasing the escaping bandits at the river. Suppose we'd best find out. Stealthily.

Thinking of which, if anyone sees any small game between here and the city, try and grab it. They don't get much of the stuff or didn't when I was there - could be useful for sweeteners.

Ohanzee smiles enigmatically "I took them from one who didn't need them any more." is all he says before throwing the rolled up carpet over Feldspar's back and climbing aboard the rhino.

After ten minutes without a crossbow bolt, Amara's detection charm comes back blank. It looks like the snipers gone. It takes a mere few seconds to see that the boat is empty.

These Sky Watchers are crazy...

Spotting Melock towards the river, Kobal heads down to the brave to let him know that they've finished searching the bandits' cave and have let Orlan go (with the parting gift of a cloak...).

The Rangers, on joining Melock can see that Amara is now searching the boat. It seems that is empty for she quickly stands up to scan the area.

Melock listens to what Kobal has to say and just shrugs, "you never know, it might help us when we're in Pavis." He points to Amara, "Red narrowly missed being hit with some crossbow bolts, but they seem to have given up now."

Amara nodded, pushing the boat back into the river. As it moved into the water she closed her eyes placing her hand into the river "Zola Fel, hear my words. Please take this boat into the hands of those who might need it. We travel and live off the land and have no need of it, but there are many who live off the water of your life who might need a craft of this nature. Please take this gift and grant it to a family in great need in the hope that one day they might do great things in your name."

Hoskar hurries to join Melock in preparing for departure. Seriously, we need to move. Night in Badside when I need sleep is a scaly prospect. Remember: see game, catch it. Bribes.

As we ride, I need to tell you what I know or we'll be crucified if we behave like we do out here. Seriously. Kobal, pretend you're me when we're in there or it's the salt mine. Lie till your tongue turns black if you must. Hold it in. Amara will be in her...ah...element as long as cheeking Lunars doesn't feature. And then there's the watch. Hey, Enlo Fire Brigade! Any of you know the 'kin in the Pavis Watch? Beetle jerky reward if you have info that pays off.

Gabbling and I know it. Tired beyond belief. By the way, what are we planning about accommodation? I can likely stay with mother in exchange for chores, likewise Pointy and Hommi for some price or other. And the Snowspear would be welcome anywhere. But not sure mother will like a nomad invasion. Butter her up and we might be lucky. Plans. We need them. Talk, people..

He looks around in febrile anxiety. Come on. If you have alternatives we need to know now. Although he bows I imagine our Lady has her own plans.

Melock laughs, "I've lied most of my life and my tongue isn't black," He briefly sticks it out in Hoskar's direction, "is it?" Still smiling, "You may need sleep, but most of us don't, so there'll be enough of us awake to keep you safe. If Badside is that dangerous, it sounds like the sort of place that that Raven women we met might hang out, she did say I should look her up when I get to Pavis, maybe she'll know somewhere safe we can stay." Melock's gaze is suddenly drawn to a clump of bushes about 50 spear lengths away, but there is nothing there that warrants his sudden attention, after a few seconds he shakes his head and turns back to Hoskar, "I remember the talk we had a while ago, I'll do my best to stay as your shadow so I don't end up dead."

In reply to Ohanzee Shappa (msg # 946):

Slumping, eyes heavy yet pupils wide, Hoskar snaps upright at this and adds some loud remarks .And that is all you are hearing? I am waiting a long time to know what we are doing when we arrive but no-one is saying a thing as we go along. We are reaching the walls soon. At that stage it occurs to me that a plan may be in order. I am knowing that Becx might be letting us - or at least me - stay if no other ideas are happening; though Pointy is his own party; so I am not worrying. You are thinking those inside the wall are maybe letting a bunch of Waha's folk stay with them gratis? Maybe think again. If you are calling that thinking. You notice for once I am not asking. This time I am knowing what is ahead.

If you are wanting my plan, we find game for the pot to sweeten guards and let those who know the score talk. Then I go see mother. Maybe we are staying with her. Unless
anyone is having a better idea. Which I know the Lady Snowspear might, but hasn't shared.

Yawning once more, he shakes his head and with uncharacteristic certainty looks firmly at Ohanzee (whether this be his face or still-departing form).So. What are you thinking is happening when we reach the wall? Maybe we are defeating the garrison and riding in in triumph?

You mean, bow to these invaders?

Hoskar Two-Feather:
Lie till your tongue turns black if you must. Hold it in.

"I can hold my tongue," he replies slightly indignantly.  "It's like when you speak to an elder of the clan.  But there's only so much a real Dedra can take in the presence of these Moon Worshippers and foreigners.  And the smell doesn't put me in a good mood either.  But I won't draw my sword without good reason.  I'll treat it as a scouting mission for our clans."

"Yeah, firstly if the Snowspear has plans for us, like she wants Melock near her again, haha, then that's what we do.  Otherwise, I figure the duck and Hommi, or the Zebra riders, might have ideas.  I don't know these town ways, but will the traders need guards in the town?  Maybe they'll pay our rooms in that case...."

Sun Hawk will be down on me if I lie 'til my tongue turns black, but one of the first things Sunny Side told me was 'All we can do is speak the truth. We need not speak all the time'. All the same, they may have more ways to get what I know from me once they see I'm a sun hawk, so take take what I get to know. I can't put out of my mind what they did to our clans at Moonbroth, but at the same time what they did to our clans at Moonbroth won't slip my mind. What are the things that they will nail us to wood for Hoskar? what are the things that will send us to the mines? Can we take the Pyre squad in with us? can we take the Beasts? I hear you all want me to talk to the elf folk, I'm sure they won't live in a stone town, How do I find them?
