Moving the river

quote:
You may have noticed in HeroQuest Glorantha, Waha cult write up the mention of the Tasks of Waha. The HQG write up isn't complete as the tasks section which is basically the detailed mythology of Waha is missing. The Tasks are basically what Waha did. They are the source of his magics, the source of the tradition spirit societies and the structure of Praxian society. His Tasks are mainly used during initiating and Khan making (as per HQG). The current list is:

Waha and Daka Fal, Waha and Foundchild, Waha and Oakfed, Waha and Dark Eater, Waha Commands the River, Waha and the River, Waha and the Star Captains, Waha and The Storm Children, Waha and the Twin Stars, Waha and Zola Fel, Waha and Baba Ulodra, Waha and Basmol, Waha and The Monkey King, Waha and Great Rhino, Waha and the Pure Horse Founder, Waha and Yelorna, Waha and the Newt God, Waha and the Cannibals, Waha and the Zebra tribe, Waha and Ernalda, Waha does the right thing, Waha and the Priestess, Waha and Death, Waha and His Brother, Waha and the Garden, Waha and the Wastelands, Waha and the Covenant, Waha the Raider, Waha and Hyena, Waha and Gagarth, Waha and Thed, Waha and Mallia.

The four that may be of help to you are Waha Commands the River, Waha and the River, Waha and the Serpents, Waha and Zola Fel.

Waha Commands the River

The Devil had been crushed beneath the Block. His body was purifying the land around and chaos was rising in new forms. Waha had to wash the Earth clean. Waha asked the Earth itself for help and with his Grandmother's sacred axe he dug the Good Canal, and diverted a river from its path. He commanded a river and its creatures to follow the canal, and to devour the Devil and take it away to the sea. The river did as commanded, but eroding the Devil polluted and weakened it and it had no strength left reach the sea. The river was shamed and tried to hide by burying into the Earth. The Earth rejected it, forcing it to the surface where possible. The mixing of Water, Earth and Chaos produced the Devil’s Marsh, the river’s shame.

The forces of chaos overwhelmed the river and Earth. The ugly creatures which now inhabit this corrupted place are the half-digested portions of the river, and the Devil. The Water Serpents of the Wastelands were appalled at what Waha had done, enslaving the river, and vowed always to be his enemy.

This version of the task is for those who have no Water Rune. In the Wastelands, Waha is the enemy of all Water spirits.

Tasks: Ask sleeping Ernalda for her sacred Axe, dig the canal, command the river.

Applicable Task(s): Waha and Ernalda.

Boon: There are no boons for this task. It acts a negative modifier when dealing with water based activity, social, martial, water spirits, and the Thirstless spirit society.

Associated Charms and Rituals

W Command Earth Elementals

W Command Water elementals

W Fight Water elementals

Waha and the River is the version for those who have the Water Rune, there's no commanding, the river does the work voluntarily and the water spirits remain friendly. Like wise Waha and Zola feel is for those with the Water rune, its the founding of the Thirstless Spirit society.

Waha and the Serpents

The Water Serpents of the Wastelands were angered by Waha's enslavement of the Sounder's River. They became his enemy. Waha waits at Serpent Ground. Waiting to fight the Great Serpent. It rises from the ground as a huge water serpent, and Waha and his minions fight against it. Khans of this Task know the ritual of subdue Water elementals.

Tasks: go to the Serpent Ground and fight the serpent. You must win or drown trying.

Applicable Task(s): Waha and Death. If the Khan or initiate has done Waha and the Sounders River it counts as a minus.

New Tasks are always being discovered (Argrath's initiation is Waha and the Dragon). All the tasks have a standard format, but not all have all the parts:

Task name (Group or Solo)

Intro to Task

Holy or Spirit place:

Applicable Task(s): (maybe negative)

Benefit(s) of Victory:

Associated Charms and Rituals

I suspect your player would enjoy battering the serpent into submission or going deeper into the Earth to Meet Ernalda in the Goddesses Dream to get her axe and carving out a new passage and forcing it into it. If there are any Water rune holders then the fun starts.

So you will need to find a serpent who is willing to move. Or find out what happened to the water spirit in the GFHs: Perhaps it needs to be freed with Eiritha's axe.

Then bring the  catfish and ask the Rhino gorge water spirit to relocate.

On the subject of a serpent who is wiling to move... What might work is finding a seasonal serpent and offering assistance to give them a year round presence so long as it is to the GFH.

Actually I want to investigate the real life (mundane) serpent in the GFH. Is it a real life one or a serpent forced into that form or who has taken that form and remains there as a survival method to persist despite the corruption?

Re: Riffing thread

As a side job, if we happen to find ourselves in the neighbourhood of the Ostrich Grasslands on the west side of Krajalki Bog, or the Paps, I'd like to try to contact the Big Pecker clan wyter (or ask the local spirits / priestesses for news of it). It's not something I'd ask for a detour for, just as and when. Possibly, it makes more sense to wait to pursue this until the character has more power on the spirit plane.

Re: Riffing thread

The Three Bean Circus visit visit the camp and a fun time is had by all. But as well as coming to spread Harmony generally they have come to seek the aid of the Wandering Rangers.

The Eiritha priestess at Agape was seeking an answer to a problem they are facing there and had a vision in which she saw some of the Wandering Rangers perform a pilgrimage from the source of the Zola Fel to the mouth of the river.

They have someone there under their protection who needs to perform the Cleansed One quest and they want them escorted to the source of the river.

I had in mind the rhino broo that escaped the trading camp by taking Melock in the fight.

If it's an ostrich broo then it could be as good as kith and kin for Khan Temush if i was born from the union of a sentient ostrich from his clan ambushed in the bolder field to the East of Rhino Gouge.

Perhaps the wyter has taken it over? Or has something to do with it.

Re: Riffing thread

How about the wyter has passively possessed it and been talking to it, desperate to keep the clan in existence and therefore maintain it's purpose. It's persuaded it that its heritage is worth striving for.

Okay Waha initiation quest.

http://basicroleplaying.org/to...nt&comment=79125

This is your thang so what would you like it to include. I think Waha and the Feathered Rivals makes sense.

Is it about working together or what?

Either that or one where you must speak with the spirits of the land, recognise them and get them to help you.

Waha and the spirits of the land.

I want to avoid anything to do with Greening the land as this is about Waha and looking after his people.

I think that if it's Waha and the Feathered Rivals then it wouldn't be about working together as the here and now is the first time they've worked together isn't it? That's not to say that quest wouldn't be good.

Waha and the spirits of the land could be good too. We could work our way though appropriate ones for us each or random.

Spirits of the land sounds fine to me.
The other possibility I was thinking of was Founding and establishing the customs of the tribes.  My thought was that if the Rangers are to unite the tribes, then knowing how the customs were set up can help in changing those customs.

Re: Riffing thread

Is it normal for the Waha initiation to be a group thing? I can understand that a group of braves might initiate at the same time, but in the case of initiation into Waha would they not be individual initiations, testing the brave in one or more aspects of their suitability as an initiate, or emulation of Waha or some aspect of him?

I've been told off site that they'd do it all together. Though I don't see why you can't do it singularly. To be honest I'm not up for doing half a dozen separate threads so will do one together, sorry.

Re: Riffing thread

No sure, totally understand that. Well if we do go for spirits of the land then perhaps we should each take an appropriate one. For me that would be a disorderly, dark or aqueous one most likely :)

Also, in the interests of not holding up those not taking part, how about just posting the ceremony and response?

definitely easier to do us all together, but it risks being a bit boring for those not taking part.
