Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

You arrived in the square near the cathedral as the sun began to set, marking the end of a Swallowtail Festival that will almost certainly be remembered by all in Sandpoint for years to come.  As the town readied itself for the dedication of their new cathedral, everyone gathered in front of the newly-built church.

A sharp retort, like the crack of distant thunder, sliced through the excited crowd as the sun's setting rays painted the western sky.  A stray dog that had crawled under a nearby wagon to sleep started awake, and the buzz of two-dozen conversations quickly hushed as all heads turned towards the central podium, where a beaming Father Zantus took the stage.  He cleared his throat, took a breath to speak, and . . .

Suddenly, a woman's scream shattered the silence.  A few moments later, another scream echoed, then another.  Beyond them, a sudden surge of strange new voices rose . . . high-pitched, tittering, inhuman shrieks.  The crowd parted and something low to the ground raced by, giggling with disturbing glee as the stray dog gave a pained yelp and then collapsed with a gurgle, its throat cut open from ear to ear. As blood pooled around its head, the raucous sound of a strange song began, chanted from shrill, scratchy voices.

Goblins chew and goblins bite.
Goblins cut and goblins fight.
Stab the dog and cut the horse,
Goblins eat and take by force!

Goblins race and goblins jump
Goblins slash and goblins bump
Burn the skin and mash the head
Goblins here and you be dead!

Chase the baby, catch the pup
Bonk the head to shut it up.
Bones be cracked, flesh be stewed,
We be goblins! You be food!

It is difficult to overstate the chaos and hysteria that now gripped the crowd.  Goblins shrieked and leaped and cackled, taking apparent great joy in their spreading of panic and fear.  It's hard to get an exact number, but it seems there are goblins everywhere in town. Dozens, if not more.  Some goblins waved torches and started lighting tents on fire, while others chased children and pets with ill intent.  Some of the goblins continued to chant the horrifically catchy and nerve-racking tune at the top of their lungs, further spurring their kin into a murderous frenzy.  Everywhere you looked, goblins tear through merchant stalls, menace locals with their sharp blades, throw rocks through windows, and generally make terrors of themselves.

You see the dog-killing goblin crouching under a wagon, licking the blood from its blade as it looks excitedly out into the panicking crowd, seeking a new target.  Someone needs to do something.  And they need to do it NOW.

OOC:  The tactical situation here is, for lack of a better word, atrocious.  People are screaming and running everywhere.  You can’t tell how many goblins are attacking, or even how many might be in the vicinity.  Liseth, you note that you are standing about 15’ from a poleaxe-wielding guardsman.  Kellan, you are about the same distance from an acolyte dressed in white.  Pisca, you are about 10’ away from what looks to be a scholar.  Cato, you are the same distance away from a gnome who is miraculously untrampled in the general chaos.

I can’t emphasize enough how little you can tell about what is going on.  Ranged combat will be VERY risky for at least the first two rounds given the fleeing townspeople.  Each pair of you has two goblins within move distance.  Charging will be impossible given the fleeing townsfolk in the way.  Each pair can also see two goblins within about 70’ of you.

Good luck!

OOC:  It’s time for those three sweet, sweet words you’ve all been waiting for:  Roll.  For.  Initiative.  The Goblins rolled an 18, so if you beat or tie an 18 you can post a combat action.  Otherwise feel free to post a reaction until the goblins take their combat turn and you’re up.

16:45, Today: The Raconteur rolled 18 using 1d20+6. Goblin Initiative.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato waited anxiously for the ceremony to start, eager to have something to take his mind off his own troubles for an evening.  He strained forward as Father Zantus took the stage and then...

A scream?  Were people that excited about what was going on?  Sandpoint was a relatively quiet town...

As the screams multiplied and Cato caught the first snatches of goblin voices, his amusement quickly flashed to fear, anger, and finally a sense of protectiveness for his adopted home.  Cato cast about, trying to formulate a clear plan amidst the screaming chaos of the crowd.

*Edit.  OOC:
21:16, Today: Cato Crispin rolled 11 using 1d20+6. Initiative.
I'll be waiting for the goblins to act first.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan was leaning just slightly on his pollaxe under the eave of a shop as Father Zantus took the stage. His other hand was held to his brow shielding his vision from the glare of the setting sun as he casually scanned the crowd for anything out of place. He was full of good food and still aglow from the events of the day when the scream reached his ears.

Perking up he began looking towards the direction it had come from, only to hear the growing shrill cacophony that passed for Goblin song. He felt himself moving unbidden against the tide of people running in the opposite direction, jostling him, yelling, grabbing loved ones, falling. He felt adrenaline lighten his limbs and grip his stomach, his breathing increase and his grip tighten on his weapon.

"Alarm! Alarm! We are under attack!" He cried out looking around for the other guardsmen

Before he really even realized he was doing it Kellan moved forward, blade held above the surging crowd as he approached the goblin crouched beneath the wagon, they locked eyes as Kellan leveled the blade, reared back then lunged at the goblin with the head spike of the pollaxe. The young guardsmen let loose a harsh cry as he struck out, one comprised of equal parts fear, surprise and anger.

18:37, Today: Kellan Storval rolled 19 using 1d20+2. Initiative.
18:58, Today: Kellan Storval rolled 17 using 1d20+4. Reach attack with Guisarme (2d4+3)

Hobity dobity.  More speeches.  Pisca scanned the forest of legs in search of familiar looking calves.  Lacking that, important, influential looking calves.  Then a chill went up the gnome's spine.  Voices.  She knew those voices.  Every gnome did.

"GOBBIES!" she cried out in her Louder-Than-You'd-Expect-For-A-Gnome voice.  "GOBBIES INSIDE THE TOWN WALLS!  TO THE CHURCH!  EVERYONE INTO THE CHURCH!"

Steel sang as the gnome drew her sharp and shiny rapier.  Gobbies didn't play games.  With her other hand she pointed a finger, and ...  "Fussbniz"  when Pisca  spoke the word a Flare burst in a goblin face.

"You, hummie.  I saw you today at the Harrow reader's."  Just a few gnomish steps and she had crossed to the young man.  "I'm Pisca Neep Freemish,"said Pisca Neep Freemish looking up from under the brim of the Cinderlander hat.  "Where's your old father?"

17:59, Today: Pisca Neep Freemish rolled 23 using 1d20+4. Initiative.

Cast Flare at one of the nearer goblins.  Fortitude vs DC14 or be Dazzled for 1 minute.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Liseth had finally calmed herself down from what had happened earlier.  Not wanting to be jostled by such a large crowd of people gathered in the cathedral square, she was standing on the outskirts, trying her best to see Father Zantus by standing up on her tip-toes.

But then there was screams!  People started running and shouting; and a poor dog was killed!  Harsh, shrill voices started to sing and Liseth felt herself starting to shake as a leaden ball dropped inside her stomach.

Then she saw them: wicked little goblins attacking the town!  They had knives and...and some of them were coming right towards her!

Almost in a panic, Liseth knows that she can't outrun them.  Her legs won't let her.  She looks around quickly and, upon seeing a man nearby dressed in guard's armor, the unarmed girl slowly begins inching towards him, hoping that she won't draw any attention upon herself.

23:33, Today: Liseth Thoradin rolled 17 using 1d20+1. Initiative.

I'll take my turn after them as well, it seems.  Stupid Goblins and their improved Initiative.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

The dog-killing goblin finished cleaning his weapon, giving it one last lick before he crawled out from under the wagon.  Unfortunately for him, he emerged right into the head spike of Kellan’s poleaxe, which impaled and killed him instantly.

As Kellan sent the dog-killing goblin back to whatever deity he served, another goblin clambered up onto the wagon from the opposite side.  He took the opportunity to leap from the wagon onto the distracted guardsman, swinging his dogslicer in an attempt to slit the “longshank’s” throat.

A lesser-trained man might have died to that attack.  But Kellan hadn’t spent hundreds of hours of training in the practice yard for nothing.  Seeing the attack out of the corner of his eye, Kellan dropped to a knee and rolled to one side, allowing the attacking goblin’s momentum to take it right over his head and into the courtyard, leaving the guardsman with only a nasty gash on his shoulder.

Elsewhere, Pisca Neep Freemish’s spell exploded in the face of a goblin who, surprised by the spell and running at full speed when it hit, collided with the cart directly in front of him, knocking him unconscious.

Meanwhile, one of the other goblins decided that this would be a perfect opportunity to ensure that he had enough food this week, proceeding to raid a nearby tent.  Yet another climbed upon the wagon from which the combat-minded goblin just attacked Kellan and yelled his defiance to the town of Sandpoint.

The goblins are almost intoxicated with the excitement of the attack; the singing of their warchanters only adds to their frenzy.  They are too busy burning, looting, and terrorizing the fleeing townsfolk to pay much attention to anything else.  Aside from the goblin attacking Kellan, and possibly the one on top of the wagon, none of them have yet recognized any of you as a threat or targeted you for an attack.

OOC:  Kellan, the attacking Goblin obtains a critical hit against you.  Take 6 points of damage.

OOC:  Tactical Situation – The crowd has thinned slightly, allowing you to assess the situation a little more clearly.  Cato and Pisca, you can see the wagon where Kellan just dispatched the dog-killing goblin.  It is around 80’ away from your position.  There is a goblin behind him and one standing on the wagon.  There is a goblin rummaging through a tent about 30’ away from you and another one trying to light a wagon on fire about 40’ away.  These are all the goblins that you can see in your vicinity.

Liseth, you see the goblin’s attack on Kellan happen almost right in front of you.  The goblin that attacked Kellan landed only about 10’ from you, but he seems far more interested in Kellan than in you.  You can see the goblin trying to light the other wagon on fire about 30’ from you.

Kellan, there is a goblin directly behind you and one standing 10' away on the wagon in front you.

Combat actions for the four of you, please.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan felt the spike punch through the top of the Goblins skull with a muted thud before he caught sight of the second goblin clambering over the wagon in his peripheral vision. Trying to bring the haft of the pole arm up to bat the goblin away he was simply too slow, the notched rusty blade of the goblins dog slicer finding purchase against his chain mail and bursting a few links with the force of the blow, Kellan gasped and felt a searing pain followed by a warm tingling where the blood flowed freely beneath his padding, a section of his armor now marred and falling open where the rings had warped or embedded in his flesh.

Driven by the sudden pain he lashed out in a wide arc behind him trailing goblin blood, to find the new aggressor tucking and rolling beneath the clumsy strike, then whipped forward in an overhand arc as yet another goblin climbed into the wagon only to have that one leap back as well, the blade splintering the wagons rail as it came down.

Prying the blade loose with a grunt and a squeal of protest from the wood, the guardsman slowly backed away from the two, attempting to keep them at distance by menacing them with his bloody spike.

HP: 7/13
Movement: 5' step to bring the wagon goblin to 15' (To hopefully use AoO next round)
Reaction: Attack of Opportunity on critical goblin (miss)
Standard: Reach attack with Guisarme (miss)

06:42, Today: Kellan Storval rolled 10 using 1d20+4. Reach Attack (Guisarme).

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Ook.  Wasn't expecting that.  But sometimes life was good.  And gnomes were blessed with the luck of the distant ancestral fay, after all!  Pisca the Lucky gave a triumphant "Ha!" in the direction of the victim of her Incredibly Powerful Flare spell.

"There's a town guard," she called out to the young human next to her.  "Kellan Ogre Stomp.  I know him.  Lets go."  And without waiting to see if the human had heard her or not, she was off.

Between herself and the town guard, however, were two more nasty, evil (though admittedly appropriately Right-Sized) gobbies.  They'd have to be taken care of or they'd wreck more havoc.  Pisca began a droning hum, then swept a hand in an arc that encompassed two goblins, one engaged in rummaging through a tent and another intent on arson.

"You need report back to Chief Goblin," she suggested in the goblin language.  "Him want report."

Move 20ft toward Kellan and Liseth.

Cast Hypnotism (2HD of Creatures.) on Rummaging Goblin and Fire Setting Goblin.  Will vs DC15 or be Fascinated.  Range 25ft.  (Gobbies get +2 to Will Save in combat.)

07:25, Today: Pisca Neep Freemish rolled 2 using 2d4. Hypnotism XHD Creatures.

Now 10' away goblin rummaging through a tent
Now 20' away one trying to light a wagon on fire

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato didn't know anything about the gnome who went running off toward the town guard, except that he had seen her outside the Harrower's tent earlier.  Still, the suggestion of running toward the armored human with the weapon seemed like a good one.  It certainly appealed to Cato's sense of self preservation.

Cato reached into his spell component pouch. He had initially planned on putting the goblins between him and the town guard to sleep, but changed his mind when the gnome cast her spell. Instead, he grabbed a piece of cured leather, and held it against his chest. He whispered "Arma" and the air around his body shimmered for an instant as he called magical armor into existence.  Then he started toward the guard.

OOC:
Standard Action: Mage Armor on self. +4 to AC (Now 16) for 1 hour.
Move action: 30 feet towards Kellan

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Any relief that she might have felt upon seeing that the goblins weren't yet interested in her vanished when she saw one of them leap at the guardsman nearby.  Liseth's hands went to her mouth as she gasped in horror at the severity of the wound that the goblin's knife left on the man's shoulder.

She saw him try to fight back, but he can't seem to swing his weapon effectively with that big wound on his shoulder.  Liseth takes an involuntary step away from the goblins and the guardsman; she wants to heal him, but those goblins would surely notice her if she did that.  She doesn't know what to do...

"Iomedae," Iomedae?  Liseth's voice is suddenly calm and authoritative as she grabs the focus hanging from her neck, "Grant your blessing to these brave defenders of the innocent people of Sandpoint.  Let your courage serve to bolster the strength of their hearts."  Did I just say a prayer to Iomedae?

Swift Action: 5-foot step away from Knifey MacKellanslash (Goblin)
Standard Action: Cast Bless

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan immediately rolls to his feet, poleaxe ready, as he faces the two goblins.  The goblin who had just injured Kellan’s shoulder, wary of the soldier’s weapon, darts inside his guard to slice him again, but Kellan manages to turn the attack aside through quick-thinking use of his poleaxe haft.  The goblin dances back but, much to Kellan’s surprise, is immediately killed by an arrow which suddenly embeds itself in his cranium.

The goblin on the wagon focuses on Kellan and, mad with excitement, leaps off the wagon toward him.  Kellan immediately swings his poleaxe around to impale his attacker, but is slightly too late, hitting the goblin with the wood just below the poleaxe’s blade and knocking him to the ground instead.

As Pisca makes her way through the rapidly-thinning mass of people, the goblin who was about to set fire to a wagon stops, slaps his forehead, says “[Language unknown: itine!]” in the loud, panicked voice of one who has forgotten a very important engagement, and takes off running away from everyone, back in the direction of the Northern Gate.

Cato sees a goblin emerge on the roof of a nearby building, leap off it to attack a fleeing townsperson, miss, and kill himself with the impact of his fall.  Both Cato and Pisca can see the goblin emerge from the tent, loaded with foodstuffs, a wide grin on his face.

As they consider their next actions, Pisca, Kellan, and Cato all feel somehow steadied, almost spiritually supported.  With bolstered confidence, they continue their defense of the town square.

You can hear the sounds of fighting, so you know the combat is probably far from over, and of course you mostly are focused on the task at hand, but as far as you can tell there are only two goblins left in your immediate vicinity.

OOC:  Tactical situation.  The goblin that was on the wagon is now adjacent to Kellan.  There is a goblin emerging from a tent about 30’ from Pisca and 30’ from Cato.  There are several dead or unconscious goblins lying about, but these are the only active ones you see.  Check out my rough map below.

Kellan was bleeding freely now with the hem of his tunic a dark crimson, however despite his wounds he felt a remarkable clarity as if a fog was lifted from his mind. The divine providence seemed to allow him to check the goblins advance with a blow from the shaft of his pole axe before stepping back and swinging the weapon in a full overhand chop, attempting to drive the axe blade onto his recovering attacker.

Somewhere in his periphery he began to notice the other combatants and was deeply relieved that the arrow had found it's mark.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Liseth saw that the blessing she just emitted seemed to have given the guardsman a second wind; but she was suddenly startled when an unexpected arrow instantly killed the goblin that had given him his wound.  She didn't like having to see the goblin die, but at least now it can't try to kill anyone else...

She still wanted to try to heal the wounded guardsman, but that goblin is still up there...for the moment he seems to be doing well enough on his own; so long as more goblins don't show up right away.   Liseth starts moving closer to them so that she can heal him the moment that the goblin isn't a threat anymore.

But then she remembered that goblins are attacking everywhere, not just the guardsman.  Liseth looked all about to see if there is anyone else that is hurt or might be dying.

Move Action: Move towards Kellan and his goblin (staying at least 15 feet away from the goblin)
Standard Action: Cast Stabilize on anyone nearby who might be dying or unconscious (25 foot range)

If there are no people or animals nearby that need to be stabilized, Liseth will cast it on a dying goblin instead.

"You little thieving, badger bumping, monkey."  Or it was something like that the gnome muttered to herself as she spied the goblin coming out of the tent with an armload of loot.

"Kellan Storval!" Pisca called out first to draw the attention of the guardsman.  Then she let her rapier fall to the grass and moved a bit forward of it before taking the bow from her back and loosing an arrow.  She frowned even as the shaft whistled through the air.  Even if the Gobbie was caught off guard, the arrow would still likely just lodge itself in his armor.

The Gobbie, or so went the Lore of Pisca, (unlike other Right-Sized peoples) had always been know as a savage and highly aggressive creature.  This one would no doubt spring to the attack.  Pisca of the Frontier Tribal Scouts, prepared herself for the charge by fixing the Gobbie with her steely gaze and delivering a wet raspberry in its direction.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan can actually see his goblin opponent start to have second thoughts as his companion dies to an arrow and he is forced to face the towering guardsman alone.  Unfortunately thinking is a difficult task for a goblin, and those thoughts are quickly driven out of his head by Kellan’s poleaxe, which splits the goblin’s head in two almost to the neck.  He collapses to the ground, quite dead.

Meanwhile, Cato’s bolt hits the food-carrying goblin as he emerges from the tent, covering him in acid.  The goblin screams in pain, dropping the supplies and hopping around, trying to get the acidic substance off of himself but only succeeding in burning his hands.  He bends over in pain, which turns out to be the best thing he could have done; Pisca’s arrow whistles over his head.  The goblin looks up, seeing both an acid-throwing longshanks and a small, determined-looking, bow-wielding Pisca Neep Freemish mocking him with what he thought must be some sort of insulting gnomish tongue-noise.  Thinking better of his original plan, and perhaps realizing that discretion is the better part of valor, the goblin immediately turns tail and runs as fast as his little green feet will carry him in the direction of the Northern Gate.

As Liseth scans the nearby area for casualties who might need assistance, she sees a woman lying on the ground in what looks like a very-unhealty state, as evidenced by the blood beginning to pool next to her.  Liseth casts her stabilizing spell, realizing as she does so that the woman is Katrine Vinder, the shopkeeper from whom Kerr had bought her treasured Heily figurine!  The injured young woman moans at Liseth’s divine intervention, looks around to find the source of her healing, smiles gratefully at Liseth, then falls into what seems to be a peaceful unconsciousness.

OOC:  Combat is concluded (for now).  You are all now gathered near the southeast corner of the market square, close to the raised dais from which the speeches had been given earlier in the day.  As far as you can tell, you four are the only ones left in the square.  Whoever assisted Kellan with the goblin-killing arrow is nowhere to be seen.  There are distant sounds of fighting, but for now your immediate area is peaceful.

I’m going to be pretty uncommunicative this weekend, as per normal, but if you guys like you can take this opportunity to discuss the attack, introduce yourselves to each other, freak out, or do whatever else you think is in character.  :)  We’ll move on to the next stage of the goblin assault Monday.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Liseth was glad that she found Ms. Vinder in time.  She knew that if someone bled out too much she isn't strong enough to do anything to help them.  Liseth managed to put on a weary smile when the other woman looked towards her, even though she didn't feel like smiling at the moment.

But the guardsman was still bleeding.  Liseth walked slowly towards him while trying her best to avoid the brutalized goblins; while also averting her gaze from the corpses.  It was obvious that the small teenaged girl was intimidated by the much larger man; the blood covering his weapon didn't help.

Liseth looked up at him, her hands held at her chest, "Um...Ms. Vinder needs help,"  She points to the unconscious form of the now-stabilized woman, "And you're bleeding.  I can make that better...if you want."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan was breathing hard, really hard and he felt like he wanted to either vomit or go to sleep. He had been in a few school yard fights growing up, but nothing that would prepare him in the least for fighting for his life. He was leaning on his pole axe, the sickening and overwhelming smells of battle permeating the air as he tried to recover his breath. He was dimly aware that the gnome had called his name, that he needed to reply to her.

The pain was growing stronger, sharper, more urgent as the adrenaline ebbed and he found himself not wanting to touch or even look at the throbbing wound. He had not had time to be afraid before but he suddenly realized just how easily the blade could have ended life. He seemed focused on the goblin he had just slain as Liseth approached.

He did not seem to hear her at first but slowly raised his head and tore his eyes from the mangled creature to meet her own. At once his features softened and he broke into something of a relieved expression as if she had banished the horrors of the day with her mere presence, just the very hint of a smile forming at the corners of his lips as he beheld her. He did not seem to realize how he looked just then, disheveled, pale, with viscous blood dappling his features and staining his gloves as it ran from the blade down the haft.

"I...ah" he began but broke off as he coughed "We should...see to her then" he nodded a little as he seemed to consider the situation, looking over to Pisca and Cato with a grateful expression before turning back to Liseth "You should really be someplace safe, they could be anywhere..." He suggested as he walked towards Ms. Vinder's supine form "You are Father Zantus's new acolyte? I've seen you around...I'm Kellan, Kellan Storval" introducing himself as he kneeled near Ms, Vinder, obviously good willed but not seeming to know much of medicine.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"Wait...Mr Storval!"  The obvious pain that Kellan was in filled Liseth with concern.  She hurried to follow him to Ms Vinder, her cursed legs causing her to limp behind the Sandpoint guard.  She stopped next to him where he kneeled and paused for a moment to steady herself again, "Ms Vinder will be okay.  She was bleeding but I stopped it.  She's just sleeping now..."

Now that he is kneeling, Liseth is able to get a much closer look at Kellan's wound.  She frowned as she peered at the broken armor links and blood drenched padding beneath it.  After a glance at Kellan's face in case he might object, Liseth tentatively reached her hand up to touch the gash on his shoulder.  She closed her eyes as her hand started to glow with divine energy and gently traced the path of the injury with two fingers.  The gash closed as Kellan's flesh knitted itself back together; after Liseth withdrew her hand all that was left was a mildly sensitive red mark on his skin.

She opened her eyes again and let out a breath.  Liseth took a step backwards and then curtsied in her robes, "My name is Liseth Thoradin."  She straightened up again, "We should get Ms Vinder somewhere safe.  Into the Cathedral; that's where Father Zantus went, I think."  And Kerr should be in there too...

There was a sudden, sharp intake of breath from her when Liseth came to a sudden realization, "What if there are goblins in the Cathedral too!?  Mr Storval, we have to go and save Kerr!"

Freudian slip?

"We need to go where the gobbies are," said the gnome.  After returning to sweep her rapier up off the ground and stick it in its sheath, she trotted the remaining distance to the young Kellan Ogre Stomp and a human woman.  "You can fight."  The gnome in the oversized hat pointed.  "And you can heal.  We need to go to the exact opposite of safe and throw these little soiled badger bottoms out."

"I'm Pisca Neep Freemish, by the way."  Pisca Neep Freemish lifted her nose in the air as though to scent the presence of nearby goblins.  "Where are you, you little chatter animals?"

"Oh.  I saw that by the way," said the gnome, breaking from her sounding of the breeze to address the young bearded hummie.  "Foosh *plat*.  Nicely done."  She mimiced the gestures that the human had performed and repeated the sound.  "Foosh *plat*."

"You know what I'm thinking?"  Asked the gnome rhetorically.  "I'm thinking that this ... all this ... "  And she waved her hands about to include the entirety of the pandemonium that the town had become.  "All of this is highly suspect.  Gobbies don't attack towns.  Maybe a farmhouse.  In small groups.  Not in these numbers."

"One there.  One there.  Another one over there."  Pisca eyeballed the various downed gobbies taking in the markings that would identify which tribe or tribes they belonged to.  "You see, gobbies don't arrange things very well.  They couldn't arrange a shrubbery let alone organize an attack like this."

"There's something behind this beyond simple fear, surprise, and the theft of armfuls of packaged goods.  Maybe you're right, Lys," she said addressing Liseth.  "It may not be a coincidence that this single great attack is coming at the same time as the opening of your new Cathedral.  If so, they'll probably try to burn it."

"But let me make sure."  And the gnome returned to scenting the breeze for goblin signs, or perhaps for the smoke that can only come from the licking flames of coincidence.

Kellan closed his eyes as the pain waned then all but disappeared at Liseth's touch. Breathing a lot more easily now he opened his eyes then looked down to examine what was left of the wound, smiled in relief then looked to her as he stood "That's much better, thank you Liseth" he bowed his head a little in appreciation than looked to the colorful little gnome.

"Pisca, I recall you speaking with the Barett's, that arrow was sorely appreciated" glancing back to where the goblin lay with a arrow shaft embedded in it's melon of a head, seeming to believe that she was the one who loosed it "You're quite a shot...and your spell weaving friend is certainly no slouch either" a nod towards Cato. "I think you both may be right, people will be flocking to the Cathedral for protection in any case, so it would only make sense to secure it before they arrive"

He looked towards the Cathedral "As you said Pisca, I have never heard of a Goblin attack on such a scale...you seem to know a fair bit about these ankle biters?" Now looking to her

"Ankle biter???"  The gnome paused in her exploration of the wind.  Her hands went to her hips and her foot began a tap-tap-tap.  "Listen Beam Banger, you are this close to poking your eye out with a weather vane.  Gobbies may be filthy little mouth breathing nonsense monkeys, but at least they're Right-Sized.  Alright?  Are we clear on that?"

"*sigh*" the gnome sighed and rolled her eyes toward the brim of her hat.  "So now that we have that out of the way, yes.  I know a bit about your Ankle Biters.  Gnomes know everything about everything and nothing about the things that nobody wants to know anything about."

"First thing you should know is that gobbies like to climb up on things and jump down on people from above.  But I guess you already found that out.  So, as Big a Person as you may be, don't forget to *look* *up*."

"*sigh*" the gnome sighed again but this time more exhasperately than before.  "Now hold on will you, while I try and figure out whether they're trying to draw us into a clever ruse by making us think that they're going to strike at the Cathedral when they're actually not."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato approached the group. He felt exhilarated, almost giddy at the brief action and danger. Some of it was adrenaline, but some of it was the realization of how much he missed his early days with the Hellknights, before the influence of the new commanders had perverted the Order. A look around him reminded him that there was nothing to be happy about this day. People lay injured, perhaps dead. Though it certainly was lucky enough for Sandpoint that people like the four them were present to drive off these goblins.

Cato nodded at Kellan in appreciation. "Thanks for the work that you did. That pole arm of yours is quite deadly. And thank Desna for your armor. I certainly wouldn't be talking had a goblin done that to me."  Cato studied the guardsman with a critical eye. Initially, Cato had been worried about shock from the injury and blood loss, but Liseth's spell seemed to have repaired most of the damage.   He addressed the acolyte. "It's doubly good luck that you were here and had the presence of mind to keep your wits about you. You've saved at least two lives so far."

"I'm Cato, by the way. Assistant to Brodert Quink, the town's sage. I'm glad we have someone here with knowledge of goblins," he said, nodding at Pisca. "I'm happy to hear any suggestions you might have for securing the rest of the town."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Liseth's closed hands went back up to her chest when the two others approached.  She whispered a response to Kellan's thanks, "You're welcome," before listening to what everybody has to say.

When it was mentioned that the goblins might be here to burn down the new Cathedral, Liseth's hands shot up to cover her mouth in shock.  "Burn it!?  But all those people that ran in there when the goblins attacked..."  Her eyes widened at the thought while her words trailed off.

She bit her lip when everyone continued speaking, and Liseth looked down at the prone form of Ms Vinder.  If the goblins did want to attack the Cathedral, then it wouldn't be safe for them to bring her there.  But where else could they take her?  If they left her where she was, any number of bad things could happen to her.  Liseth might be able to wake her up by fixing her wounds, like she did with Kellan.  But if they can find a safe place to bring her, it would be better to let her sleep until the goblins were driven away.

Realizing that she was being spoken to, Liseth looked up at Cato.  She felt abashed by his words, as indicated by the red tinge suddenly spreading through her cheeks.  The diminutive girl looked down at her feet when she answered, "That's a nice thing for you to say, Mr Cato; but I wanted to run away along with everybody else.  I was never so scared before in my whole life.  But I can't.  Run I mean; not very fast.  I was just afraid that they might single me out if they saw me try..."  She rubbed her hands together uneasily with her admission.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"One.  Two.  Three."  The gnome pointed to three goblins in turn and shook her head.  Even though she'd speculated upon the possibility it was something altogether different to have confirmation right there before her eyes.  "There are five tribes local to the Lost Coast," she said to their little impromptu cadre of goblin fighters, "and I see three separate tribes right here in this area alone."

"It would take an unusually strong leader just to make two tribes work together.  Here we have three.  Maybe even five!  This ... "  The gnome in the big hat began pacing.  She took slow and deliberate steps in time to her musings.  Her wanderings took her to different spots where she would stop and either deliver a comment to one or the other of the three humans that she found herself with, or to speculate to a spectral, most certainly invisible, fifth person.  "This doesn't happen but once in ... well, once in a long time."

"They could be here for the Cathedral.  Or they could be here for the butterflies.  You can never tell with gobbies.  Have you ever seen the things they eat?  But if they are here for the consecration of the cathedral, you'd have to wonder how it is that they knew today was to be the consecration?  It's not as though the gobbies frequent the local inn or that they come into town to chat with the fishwife.  They'd have to have help, or otherwise find out from a non-gobbie.  Someone who's not a goblin, someone willing to work with them.  Not many people like that."

"Or, they could just be here for the Swallowtail Festival.  They probably know that it happens every year.  Some gobbies even know what a calendar is.  The leader will be important.  The leader is what's keeping them together.  Making them dangerous.  Kill the leader.  Or, make them believe the leader is dead, and they'll scatter."

"So, here's what the gnome thinks," pontificated Pisca, "I'm not so sure that the gobbies are here for the Cathedral.  Not anymore.  I hear fighting down near the Undercliff Bridge.  That way," and Pisca pointed to the southeast and the nearby bridge the spanned the Turandarock river.  "There's more a little further off.  Southwest toward the center of town.  I also smell smoke from the Northern Gate."  And here, Pisca points to the northeast.  "But I don't hear any fighting from that direction.  We're near the Cathedral anyway.  Lets make sure that the people at the Cathedral are alright and that the they're warned that there could be a major attack against them.  If they seem alright, we can run as fast as we can to one of those other places and help out there."

"Who's for going with what the gnome suggests," she asked?  And Pisca raised up her own hand.

Knowledge Local please to determine what places of importance would be in either of those two locations.  Anyone we know live in either of those places?

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

While you have managed to clear out the goblins in the immediate vicinity, from the sounds of fighting it is clear the attack is not over.  As you are discussing how best to take the fight to the goblins, a group of them obligingly bursts in to the square from High Street (to the south) and immediately begins running towards the cathedral.  They have armed themselves with burning torches, which they are wielding with a maniacal delight, and have the support of one of their hideous warchanters, who starts up “The Goblin Song” again as soon as she spots you.  The goblins themselves shriek with glee and move directly towards you, waving their flaming brands to the beat of her terribly-catchy tune.

OOC: Tactical situation – You see three goblins armed with flaming brands moving directly toward you, approaching from the southwest. . . at this point they are all three abreast, about 30’ away.  The warchanter is staying about 10’ behind the flame-wielding goblins, and as they close you can see she is holding a whip which she cracks over their heads to accentuate her tune

Roll for initiative.  The goblins rolled a 17, so if you roll that or higher please post a combat action as well.

Kellan seemed a little abashed by the gnomes response before he offered Cato a hand and a nod. Listening to Pisca's theory on the current situation he nodded a little as she expounded on the habits of the species, now and then glancing to Liseth and Cato as he caught his breath.

Just when it seemed he was ready to weigh in with his own suggestion, the tune of the goblin Warchanter reached his ears.

"Well met, I..." He paused and turned towards the quartet entering the square, brands ablaze.

"Here they come again! " he called out,  a knowing look to Liseth as if to reference her previous plea to save those within the nearby Cathedral. Hefting his pole axe he prepared to move out in front of the group.

Cato smiled as the gnome worked through her one-sided dialogue. He was about to raise his hand when he spotted the goblins approaching the cathedral. Something must have alerted Cato to the oncoming threat a split second before anyone else, because before anyone else had reacted, he already had a hand in his spell component pouch, and arcane energy buzzing at the front of his mind.

He tossed out the sand, muttered "somnus", and cast the sleep spell at the group of goblins. Glancing quickly at the well-armored Kellan and the vulnerable Liseth, Cato stepped in front of the acolyte, trusting in his Mage armor to keep him safe from any goblins that remained awake.

Cato heroically stepped between Liseth and the goblins, gesturing as he uttered the arcane words that he hoped would usher their opponents into a forced slumber.  Immediately two of the goblins stumbled, crashing into the ground with the force of their forward momentum, fast asleep.  The excitable remaining goblin, failing to notice his colleagues' involuntary naptime, ran forward, leaping at Cato (since he didn't fancy leaping into Kellan's poleaxe), waving his firebrand, and generally having as wonderful a time as one could possibly have during a life-or-death combat.

But the good times were not to last; the goblin shrieked his frustration as his firebrand was nearly knocked from his hand as it hit the mystical field currently surrounding the wizard's body and shielding him from harm.

The warchanter, meanwhile, shocked by the fall of 2/3 of her cohort, stopped next to one and shook him awake, all the while looking daggers at her opponents and continuing to wail what passes for inspirational goblin music.

“That stupid question,” the suddenly-fascinated goblin-that-had-just-been-attacking-Cato says, dropping his firebrand and staring at Pisca with fascinated fascination.  “Mosswood tribe chief is Big Gugmut.  Everyone knows that!”  The goblin’s voice drops to a whisper.  “He’s half-hobgoblin.”  The goblin nods soberly at Pisca, as if they are sharing a very, very secret secret.

Then he stares at her some more.  The wakeful goblin and the Warchanter seem unaffected, however.

Liseth felt herself release a breath that she didn't know that she was holding when the goblin's firebrand bounced off of Cato's magical armor.  She almost took a step backwards to try and get further away from the goblin, but stopped herself; perhaps realizing that she would be too exposed if she did.  And that if Cato did get hurt, she would need to be close to him in order to heal him.

From her spot behind Cato, Liseth watched as Kellan flanked the goblin with his poleaxe.  With a grimace she pulled her head behind Cato before what she knew was going to happen did happen; then peered from his other side to the goblins still far away.  Liseth wanted to help, but she knew that she could never help in the same way as Kellan...

Then an idea struck her.  That goblin chanter would make their goblin minions keep attacking, she's sure.  So maybe Liseth can do something about their flaming torches...

She raises her arms into the air, "Gozreh, The Wind and the Waves, send a torrent to douse the flames of these enemies who threaten your new place of worship."

I'm readying Create Water, holding the spell from completing until one of the goblins with a torch moves closer.  Since my range with it is only 25 feet.  Maybe two gallons of water dropped on his head will dampen his hostility.  Or at least douse his torch.

Also, I'm pretty sure that I recall Gozreh being mentioned as one of the deities represented in Sandpoint's new Cathedral.  The only other deity that I'm sure is worshiped there is Desna though.

Cato began to wish that he had his trusty quarterstaff or crossbow with him.  He didn't have a great deal of magical spells prepared, and he had already used up half of his most powerful spells.  But uncast spells wouldn't help if he was dead.

He reached over and touched his hand against Kellan's armor.  "Aegis," the mage whispered, and a series of glowing runes quickly flashed in the air around the guardsman, before fading away.

Now Cato just needed the goblins to waste their energy attacking Kellan instead of him.  Cato hoped the threatening pole arm would take care of that problem.

Hergle the goblin stared at Pisca.  She was the most fascinating thing he'd ever seen in his short life.  She was just so . . . very . . . GNOMY.  Like the epitome of gnomishness.  He wondered how she had managed to become the perfect gnome.  He couldn't really describe it, but he just had to . . .

Suddenly a big armored human loomed in Hergle's peripheral vision.  Trance broken, Hergle snarled and drew his dogslicer, but it was too late.  His life ended on the business end of Kellan's poleaxe.

Meanwhile, the other goblin moved to his sleeping companion and shook him awake.  The Warchanter, still singing her ridiculous tune at the top of her lungs, dropped her whip and drew her shortbow, aiming to take out the longshanks who had so recently killed poor Hergle.  Fueled with the power of her rage, she pulled, aimed, and fired, sending a missile that just barely missed burying itself in Kellan's arm.  While the Sandpoint Guardsman somehow managed to dodge aside at the last second and receive only a scratch, he knew he couldn't always be so lucky.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"No..." whimpered Liseth as the goblin chanter drew back and fired an arrow to wound Kellan yet again; the concentration she had on her invocation failed as a splash of water fell harmlessly to the ground.  Instinctively she found herself grabbing Cato and ducking behind him, away from the path of the arrow; followed by sheepishly whispering, "I'm sorry," to the mage.

She took a step towards Kellan, hoping to heal his new injury, but stopped herself when he charged ahead towards the goblins.  Liseth shouted after him, "Mr Storval, you're hurt!"  She needed to help him but he was too fast, and those goblins were over there too...

Suddenly she remembered when Father Garrick had taught her how to release divine energy in a broad burst that can help many people at once, and even those who weren't nearby.  It should even heal Ms Vinder too, maybe even wake her up.  But, and Liseth shuddered at the thought, it might heal some of the goblins nearby as well.  She hated herself for it, but Liseth looked around quickly to mark the locations of each fallen goblin and specifically exclude them from the healing energies that she was about to release.

Then she closed her eyes and spoke in a strong, calm voice, "[Language unknown: "Eau Reches!  Redhouear Sonhatart!  Com ai heroti mo befi eveto pafoha!"] before a wave of pure white energy burst forth from Liseth's body.

10:56, Today: Liseth Thoradin rolled 7 using 1d6+1. Channel Energy Healing amount.

That should heal both Kellan and Katrine Vinder for 7 points of damage.  I don't think that anyone else is injured though.  Liseth is specifically excluding up to 4 fallen goblins from the effect.

Also, the duration on my Bless spell was only 1 minute.  It probably wore off during the interlude between battles.  Though I suppose that in the end it's up to Racon how much time has really passed.

Cato winced when the warchanter's arrow struck Kellan. That certainly hadn't been part of the plan. Maybe he could take out the injured warchanter and start to even the odds. As before, Cato flung out his arm and a drop of acid sped towards the goblin.

OOC:
Standard Action: Acid Dart at warsinger.
13:29, Today: Cato Crispin rolled 4 using 1d6. Damage.
13:27, Today: Cato Crispin rolled 4 using 1d20+2. Crit confirmation .
13:26, Today: Cato Crispin rolled 22 using 1d20+2. Ranged touch for acid dart.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

The Warchanter glared at Pisca as the gnome drew her bow and fired.  The goblin's horrific song faltered slightly as she unsuccessfully attempted to dodge the arrow, which buried itself in her shoulder.  She screeched in pain and reached for a bag at her waist, but before she could do so was suddenly hit by Cato's burst of acid.

The Warchanter screamed in agony, song forgotten, as her two goblin henchmen stared in horror.  She then crumpled to the ground, unconscious.

The two remaining goblins looked at their fallen Warchanter, looked at their opponents, then looked at each other.  Coming to an unspoken agreement, they immediately took off running for the Northern Gate as fast as they could, predations forgotten.

OOC:  You JUST got her.  Which is good for you guys, because if she's had both of her goblins available to attack she might have done some serious damage.  You now have a couple of rounds to recover, discuss what's going on, etc.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"They're getting away!"  The gnome barreled down the street after the two fleeing goblins.  Then ...  She skidded to a quick stop.

"Oh yeah.  Them running away was what we wanted."

"Never seen a warchanter up close," she said, returning to kneel by the body.  Pisca turned the goblin's face from first one side to the other, examining the facial painting.  "Wonder what Big Gugmut would have to say about your performance here today, huh?  Big Gugmut ... "  The gnome's violet eyes stared off into the middle distance, but only for a moment.

"Nice shot, by the way, Cato.  We make a great team.  We all make a great team.  Yes siree bob.  Whatever that means," she said and returned to her examination of the body.  "Hmm," she hummed.  And, "Huh?" she huh'ed.  Then, "I wonder what you have on you.  Ooo.  Arrows.  Thank you."

"So?  Where were we?"  The big hat and fringed leather jacket spoke over her shoulder to the three humans as she rifled through the possessions of the goblin warchanter.  "Oh.  Right.  Make sure that the people at the Cathedral are alright and that they're warned that there could be a major attack against them.  Which may have been what we just averted.  If they seem alright, we run as fast as we can to Undercliff Way bridge or the center of town to help out in one of those places.  That was it, wasn't it?"

"Who's for the gnome's suggestion?" she called out and raised one hand while the other continued to pat down the cooling goblin corpse.

Kellan was mid-charge when the missiles struck home, watching at the Warchanter collapsed in the street. Turning to vent his pain at the remaining two, he quickly found himself out paced by the faster Goblins.

"Yeah, run you cowards!" He called out as he brandished his pole axe above his head, watching them flee.

Once again a little short on breath, he turned see Pisca rifling the Warchanters corpse and nodded in agreement with her appraisal.

"Yeah, that worked well, we worked well...would hate to think of what could have happened had we not been here" looking over the pristine walls of the newly constructed cathedral as re replied.

"It sounds like a plan, let's check inside then, if all is well, be on our way. I should report in at the Garrison" he added half to himself, making his way towards the cathedral steps.

"Thank you again by the way" he smiled towards Liseth, plucking the dangling arrow from his punctured chainmail.

Cato nodded in agreement.  "Yes, we seem to do quite well together.  Interesting how quickly these goblins fled when they encountered resistance.  I suppose they weren't expecting to find anything but screaming townspeople, but I wonder why they would have staged an attack in the first place.  Pisca, your intuition regarding these goblins has been pretty good so far.  Let's go check to make sure those in the cathedral are okay, then check the rest of town."

As Pisca searches the Warchanter, she finds a potion, a shortbow, 19 arrows, 20 gold pieces, some rather worse-for-wear studded leather armor sized for a small humanoid, and a dogslicer.  A whip lies on the ground nearby.

OOC:  To identify a potion, all you have to do is take a sip.  Of course, if it's a poison . . .

Liseth seemed to relax, if only slightly, when the goblins fled.  Immediately she went to check on Ms. Vinder, setting down on her knees next to her, to see if the healing energy had helped her.  Liseth gently shook the unconscious woman, "Ms Vinder, are you okay?"

She nodded silently at everyone's suggestion to go and check on the Cathedral right away, but quickly became flustered when people started to move without her.  "Wait!  We can't leave Ms Vinder here!  What if a goblin finds her?"  Liseth tried to pick her up and quickly becomes red-faced with the exertion, nearly dropping Ms Vinder to the ground as she falls to her rear.  "I can't carry her all by myself..."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Things in Sandpoint have calmed somewhat.  Here and there the sounds of battle, clanging swords, calls for support from the Sandpoint Guard, and shrieking or singing goblins echo through the streets, but the area near the cathedral seems quiet.  The citizens have fled for the cathedral, their homes, or points elsewhere in town.  Many goblins are dead, their bodies lying alongside those of a couple of unfortunate Sandpoint citizens.

Katrine Vinder coughed and raised herself up on one elbow as Liseth knelt next to her.  “Yes.”  She replied.  “Yes, I’m okay.  Thanks to you!”  She gave Liseth a look filled with so much gratitude that it might almost be considered embarrassing.  “I think you saved my life!  Aren’t you Father Zantus’ new acolyte?  I’m going to tell him exactly what you did for me and how you saved me.  In fact, I’m going to tell everyone!”

Katrine gave Liseth a smile as she made her way to her feet, then clasped her hand.  “I’ll especially tell Kerr,” she said, giving the young blonde a broad wink.

“I think I can make my way to the cathedral.  I saw Father Zantus and Kerr herding people in there when the attack started.”  She looked around at the dead goblins with the dawning realization that the four standing in front of her had played a major part in their deaths.  “I should be safe; it looks like there aren’t any of them left here.”

Indeed.  But while the fight has clearly moved on from the cathedral, you can still smell smoke coming from the north.  And in the relative quiet, you now hear the sound of frightened yells and frantic barking coming from the direction of the Northern Gate.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato had just caught his breath after the second brief combat had ended.  He looked around at his companions, who seemed to be in good shape.  Even Kellan, who had borne the brunt of the goblins' attention.

When Liseth bent to help Ven, Cato felt ashamed.  He had been so caught up in the excitement of the goblins that he forgot about the people of Sandpoint.  Luckily, the woman seemed to be okay.  He was relieved that the new cathedral seemed to be safe from the danger a fire as well.

Then he heard the sounds from the north end of town.  Likely another brief melee against the goblins as well.  "Sounds like someone else could use our help.  Kellan, my ward on you will only last for a minute, and I'm almost out of spells.  I'll do what I can to help.  Hopefully this will be the last group of the goblins attacking Sandpoint.  Unless you know where I could find a crossbow quickly?"

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"Ooglie oo."  With the fringed leather jacked draped about her, the gnome squatted amidst the possessions of the ex-goblin-warchanter.  In her hands she turned the potion vial, swooping it through the air as though it were a long tubular bird and that this act might, in some incomprehensible fashion, tell her something about it.  "Hmph," she hmph'ed.  "Going to have to do this the hard way."  Pisca uncorked the vial and took a cautious sniff.  She wrinkled her nose on the off hand chance that the concoction was nasty but her nose somehow missed that message.  Then she dipped her little finger into the top of the vial and came out the tiniest drop that clung upside down from the tip.  The gnome tipped back her head and opened wide, then *glomp*, she chomped down on her own finger and sucked it dry.

"Hmm," she hmm'ed, swirling the tiny drop around in her mouth.  "Tastes like chicken."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan moved over and helped Ms. Binder to her feet at Liseths urging. Once the woman was up Kellan felt watched the exchange between Liseth and the rescued woman with a warm heart.

"One down, how many to go?" he wondered to himself, his stomach still clenched at the thought of all those that he had known and loved at risk here, fates unknown.

As Liseth received her praise and Pisca sampled her goblin draught, Kellan turned to Cato to discuss the plan of action.

"The Garrison has a compliment of crossbows, but it's about 200 yards to the south west." Gesturing in that direction with one hand "It sounds like the battle is currently to the north. I would gladly lend you my key if you wish to try to retrieve one...but I would probably do the most good heading directly to the front." He fished out a large, well worn brass key from a fine chain at his waist in the case Cato decided on the former.

Remembering that his friend Alergast was stationed nearby to the east along the Undercliff Bridge, Kellan inwardly wished to join his commanding officer as soon as possible.

OOC: Assuming that the garrison stocks these, and that Kellan would has access given his profession, can certainly alter the post should you say otherwise Racon. From the map it kind of looks like one would be able to see along Undercliff from the south side of the Cathedral plateau?

Cato winced as Pisca sampled the potion.  "Next time, we might try some spells to identify potions without sampling it before we run into a fight."

Cato shook his head at Kellan's offer.  "It's probably better to help with what we have rather than show up well-prepared for a battle that's long since ended."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Liseth was filled with relief when Ms Vinder spoke to say that she was okay and then stood up.  But when the other lady began gushing her thanks she couldn't stop herself from blushing; which only intensified when Ms Vinder winked and mentioned telling Kerr all about it.  The diminutive girl bashfully looked away, "You don't have to do all of that Ms Vinder.  I'm just happy that you're okay..."

Then Liseth realized that she could still hear yelling and smell smoke coming from the direction of the Northern Gate.  She suddenly frowned, saddened by the fact that the fighting was not yet over, "Ms Vinder, you should hurry to the Cathedral.  It doesn't sound like its safe out here yet.  And you can tell Father Zantus and Kerr that we're okay."  Liseth rubbed her hands together in obvious reluctance, but stated with determination, "I can't go to the Cathedral yet.  There are still people out here that are hurt, and I need to help them."

Picking her way through the square, Liseth searched for anyone that looked injured but can still be saved; issuing a small prayer to stabilize their wounds whether they be man, woman, animal, or goblin.  Though she was careful to not wander more than thirty feet from Kellan and Cato in case another group of hostile goblins showed up.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"*Khgk*"

The gnome rose from her crouch with one hand at her throat and the other, holding the potion, outstretched as though grasping for support.  She took a step and staggered.  "*Khgk*Khgk*" she choked.

"Just kidding.  This is a minor healing draught."  Pisca's stance straightened and she sealed the vial back up by pounding the cork back down in the mouth.  "Why don't you take this, Lys?" she said, offering the potion.  "Or give it on to whoever you think can best use it."

Pisca herself pocketed the twenty gold pieces and spilled the arrows into her quiver.  The rest, whip and dogslicer, she rolled into the armor and placed it at the side of the road with the words, 'Pisca's Stuff' written on the outside in chalk.

"You know, I heard fighting from the Undercliff Way bridge too," interjects the gnome as the others propose going north.  That's pretty close to the Cathedral too.  Any gobbies who came from the bridge could climb over the wall and come across the Boneyard.  Come at the Cathedral from the rear."

She turned to the east where she knew the bridge to lie.  She had heard sounds of fighting.  Fighting meant defenders already there.

"Lets run around to the north corner of the Cathedral," Pisca the Now Somewhat Less Sure Than She Was a Moment Ago Gnome proposed.  "From there we should be able to see what's going on at the North Gate.  We can also look in the front door of the Cathedral as we go by.  Once we see what's going on up north, we can decide then."

"Alright?" asked the gnome.  As she was waiting for an answer, Pisca turned her head first one way and then another, listening again for a change in the sounds of fighting that came drifting in from down the streets and over the rooftops.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Katrine gives Liseth a hug, the rest of the party a grateful wave, and heads toward the cathedral.  As you hurry north through the square, you see the cathedral door open and Katrine go inside.  As you move onto Church Street, you can see the figure of what looks to be a young man staring after you from the cathedral steps.

You race up Church Street as fast as you can, given the presence of Liseth and Pisca, following the sounds of combat.  As you round the corner of The White Deer (perhaps Sandpoint's most well-appointed inn), you find the source of both the flames and the ruckus.

A goblin mounted on a goblin dog has attacked a noble and his hunting dog, who were apparently attempting to stop the goblins from lighting the northern part of the city on fire.  The noble cowers behind a rain barrel, calling for help, while his dog fights the mounted goblin.  You arrive on the scene just in time to see the mounted goblin kill the dog with his blade.  As the dog crashes dying to the ground, the mounted goblin's kin, who were cowering behind some debris in fear of the dog, throw up a cheer and begin to emerge from hiding.

The goblins are distracted by their kill and the cowering noble.  As they turn their attention to their new prey, you see the opportunity to attack with surprise.

Please roll initiative, but regardless of your roll post a combat action as you have a surprise round in which the goblins cannot act and will be considered flat-footed.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Liseth stifled a cry when the mounted goblin struck down the poor dog.  But then she saw the man who was also up there and all of those goblins getting ready to mob him.  She shouted out to him as loud as she could, "Hurry!  Run this way!"

Then seeing that a messy fight was unavoidable now, she grabbed hold of her focus and said a prayer, "Sarenrae, suffuse us with your holy light that we might gain the courage to protect the innocent from implacable wickedness."

Cato whispered to the group.  "My last spell can summon a minor celestial animal to help us, but it won't last for very long, and I have to be fairly close.  I suggest concentrating our attacks on the closest goblins, then I'll summon help next round to aid Kellan in close combat while we continue to support him from afar.  That seems to have worked fairly well so far."

Moving quickly, Cato advanced around the side of The White Deer and up the road, praying the goblins wouldn't notice him as he got closer.

As his compatriots got in position, Cato cast his spell he pulled a small candle from his pouch and concentrated on it. "Accio," he said quietly. In a louder voice, "Hey!  Goblins!  Why don't you try picking on this dog?"

"Closest gobbie?  Alright?"  The gnome had already moved out, headed off the road and in the direction of what, by the purest coincidence, happened to be the closest goblin.  With the human mage behind her, she rushes up the last few steps to get within range and looses an shaft at it very near the same time as the human sends another dart of acid its way.

"It's a good day to die," quips the gnome.  "Well, for you to die.  Not me."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Gok cowered behind some debris as he watched Gorzin duel the longshanks' hated dog.  Gok, along with Azgut and Trub, had been happily burning the northern part of the town when the longshanks had burst from the big building with his ferocious dog in an attempt to drive them off.  And he would have succeeded, too, if Gorzin hadn't arrived to deal with the pernicious pooch.  Like all goblins, Gok detested dogs.  They frightened him deeply.

Gok stood to cheer along with his fellows as Gorzin buried his horsechopper into the dog's neck, earning a attenuated yelp and gifting the dog with a quick death.  Now that the dog was taken care of, all that was left was dealing with the cowering longshanks, who didn't look like he would be much of a . . .

An arrow sprouted in Gok's shoulder.  He stared at it dumbly, then realized he must be under attack.  As he looked around for the source of the arrow, he saw a longshanks waving his arms in the air.  Stupid longshanks.

Suddenly a DOG appeared RIGHT UNDER GOK'S NOSE.  Gok screamed in fear, immediately forgetting the pain in his shoulder and bringing his dogslicer down in an arc mirroring the one employed by Gorzin just seconds earlier.  While it earned Gok the same sort of yelp, this blow did not kill the dog, who snarled his anger.  Just as Gok was ready to run for his life, his friend Azgut ran up and finished the dog with his aptly-named dogslicer while it was preoccupied with Gok.  Gok and Azgut grinned at each other.  Dead dogs were good dogs.

Gok wondered where Trub was.  Probably hiding in the debris.  Trub was a good hider.

Gok saw an armored longshanks approaching, along with the smaller bow-armed person who had apparently shot him.  Gok growled, then smiled as he saw an arrow nearly bury itself in the short woman's throat, although she managed to escape with just a nick.  Gorzin is on the prowl, Gok thought.  These longshanks would have their hands full with him.

OOC:
Gok (Goblin 3) attacks Cato's summoned celestial dog and hits for 4 damage
Azgut (Goblin 2) moves to 016 and attacks Cato's summoned celestial dog with flanking bonus, hitting for four damage, killing it.
Trub (Goblin 1) moves into the debris at 013.

Gorzin (Mounted Goblin) moves to V14, shooting his shortbow at Pisca, hitting but failing to confirm his critical, doing two points of damage to her.

Remember that if you shoot at or otherwise attack the mounted goblin you need to specify whether you are targeting the goblin himself or his mount.

Combat actions, please.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan marched forward, watching in muted disappointment as the summoned animal was cut down before him. He had hoped to find other guardsman here, Dacen, Alergast, somebody. Steeling himself he continued towards the little beady eyed monsters, reminding himself that this newly founded group of four may very well be all that remained of the towns defenders.

Trying to keep the other goblins in his peripheral, he began menacing the nearest goblin as he advanced, attempting a few thrusts in it's direction and occasionally sparing a glance towards the man behind the barrel.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Reluctant to be left exposed, Liseth carefully crept closer to the marauding goblins; looking towards the burning debris while she stepped next to Cato.  She knew that she couldn't just let it burn uncontrolled; she had to at least try to do something.  The house across from her was too far away for her to try to summon water on it, but there was that burning mass closer to her.

She saw that the goblins were distracted by the magical dog that Cato summoned, so Liseth took a final step out from behind the mage while whispering a prayer, "Send a deluge to douse...Eep!"  Her incantation is cut off short when, out of the corner of her eye, Liseth caught sight of Pisca being struck by an arrow.  Eyes widened in horror when the gnome was struck with what to Liseth looked like it would be a lethal shot, even though the hardy gnome didn't fall.

Her prayer for water was left unfinished and forgotten now that Liseth's attention changed to trying to reason how best to help Pisca; but it seemed the gods managed to interpret her intent easily enough.  Now forgotten, a bucket's worth of water condensed above the flames and splashed down onto them.

"Ow," said the gnome with an icy calm that belied the close brush she had just had with death.  She put a hand up as if to staunch the flow of blood.

"That."

"Hurt."

Wait.  One, two, plus the Dog Rider.  Weren't there ... three?

"Eyes up," called out Frontier Scout Pisca in her Better Pay Heed to the Gnome voice.  "We have a sneaky little critter out there."  Her eyes scanned the mound of debris where she had seen the gobbie only moments before.

"Hmmm," Pisca's eyes searched the terrain.  And then, "Hmmm," again some more.  The gnome snapped off a quick shot at the little green badger bugger she'd hit before with a sharp sssssshhhk that ended in a satisfying thut.  Then she returned to more hmmm style searching.

"Hmmm."  Pisca darted quickly behind Kellan Ogre Stomp.

"Hmmm."  She peered out from around the human's legs to stick her tongue out at the nearby gobbie.

"Hmmm.  Where could that little evil ernie be?"

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Gorzin surveyed the situation with all the cunning and insight he possessed.  These new arrivals looked dangerous; as usual it was up to him to save the day.  He was surprised the footgoblins had summoned the courage to fight off that magic dog; he had thought they would have run for the hills at its first bark.

As Gorzin saw Gok go down in a hail of acid and arrows, then Trub impaled on a poleaxe during his attempt to close with the armored guardsman, he figured he needed to even the odds.  Spotting a small longshanks who seemed to be with the attacking group, Gorzin figured he would move in, kill her, and then deal with the other three piecemeal while Azgut kept them busy.

Gorzin snickered as Azgut jumped forward and took an almost-comical swing at the armored human, nearly spinning himself around.  Gorzin imagined Azgut wouldn't last long.  But hopefully it would be just long enough.

Gorzin spurred Nif, his goblin dog, forward, riding between the flaming debris and closing with the shocked-looking woman, only slightly distracted by the appearance from water out of nowhere that partially doused the flames.  Gorzin gave an evil smile.  It looked like he'd chosen well; she seemed to be the herd's weakest.  He swung his horsechopper at the yellow-haired longshanks but managed only a glancing blow, causing her to stumble backwards and, in the process, barely avoid Nif's razor-sharp teeth.  Gorzin snarled as he pressed the attack; this woman needed to die.

OOC:

Gok (Goblin 3) is, sadly, dead.  RIP Gok.
Azgut (Goblin 2) takes a five-foot step to N17, attacking Kellan, but missing.
Trub (Goblin 1) bursts out of the debris, moving to L15 to attack Kellan, but as he moves is cut down by Kellan's attack of opportunity in space M14.  RIP Trub.

Gorzin (Mounted Goblin) moves to L22, where both he and his goblin dog attack Liseth.  Gorzin hits Liseth for two points of damage, while the goblin dog misses entirely.

That could have gone a LOT worse for our favorite Oracle.  Clearly she is favored by the divine!  :)

Remember that if you shoot at or otherwise attack the mounted goblin you need to specify whether you are targeting the goblin himself or his mount.

Combat actions, please.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan braced himself as the Goblin burst forth from the rubble, impaling the creature through the rib cage as it charged him. Dislodging his pole axe with a twist of the haft he swung the weapon around to attempt to hit the other attacker but was too slow, the two locking together in combat, dog slicer and pole arm coming together with a resounding impact.

Out of his peripheral he caught sight of the mounted Goblin bearing down on the frail looking Oracle, heedless of the goblin in front of him, he gave out a grunt, shoving the goblin away as he turned towards the scene unfolding behind him.

"Liseth!" he screamed roughly as he charged, the name becoming a battle cry as he closed on the mounted Goblin, teeth bared he drove the spike of the pole axe towards the flank of the goblin dog, hoping to dislodge the rider.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Liseth only barely had time to register the charge towards her of the goblin mounted on his hideous monster dog.  She gasped in startlement when he came straight for her, thinking for a moment why he would choose to attack her; a thought that was immediately cut short when she did her best to stumble backwards and get away from his slicing blade and biting mount, all the while shrieking in terror and pain from the thankfully glancing yet most severe injury she had ever received.

With shaky hands and voice, the diminutive oracle grabbed her focus to beseech a blessing of protection before the goblin could press his attack and doubtlessly kill her, "Sarenrae, this humble servant begs your divine protection..."  Then she tightly closed her eyes to shut out the menacing visage and snarling monster before her; vaguely hearing someone shout her name as she clutched her divine focus with all of her might.  The small girl knew quite well that if the gods did not see fit to protect her then there was little else that she could do.

It's surprising really.  How excitable hummies can be.  Especially young ones.  Especially when you get males and females together.  Field Scholar Pisca takes in the whole thing with just the proper amount of clinical detachment.

The big hat with the fringed jacket tracked across the field and back onto the road even as Kellan Ogre Stomp gave the fetid goblin dog a real good poking.  She smiled up at the young mage as she went by, then planted her feet and fired another arrow.  This one flew past Liseth's hip and dug itself into the goblin dog with a thunk as meaty as each of its predecessors.

"Down, doggie," the gnome said to no one in particular.  "Doggie down."

Cato yelled in surprise when the goblin and his goblin dog charged up and attacked Liseth.  She seemed to be more surprised than truly hurt, but it was obvious the young woman was not used to combat and could be in serious danger.  Taking down the goblin was probably the best course of action; the dog would probably flee if that was done.  Along with, possibly, the last remaining goblin as foot as well.  Killing the warchanter earlier had accomplished much the same thing.  Taking a second to gain an opening, Cato flung another acid dart at the aggressive goblin.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Gorzin was getting annoyed.  There was no way the blonde longshanks should still be alive after he and Nif attacked her, but there she was, stumbling backwards and grabbing her necklace.  He started to nudge Nif after her, to finish her off . . .

Suddenly Gorzin had bigger problems, as the armored guardsman appeared and would have impaled poor Nif if it hadn't been for a bit of Nif-ty (haha!) dogriding; he yanked Nif's head around and just barely got his mount away from where the guardsman's deadly poleaxe almost surely would have killed it.

Apparently Azgut had failed to keep the guardsman's attention, curse him.  Azgut apparently knew he was in trouble; he chased the armored man all the way back, hacking ineffectively.  The guardsman swung his poleaxe around to fend off Azgut, but once again poleaxe met dogslicer and neither combatant could gain the upper hand.

Gozrin wheeled Nif around; the short woman wasn't the threat, this armored longshanks was.  But no sooner had he done this than Nif let out a yelp . . . an arrow had hit him in the rear.  As Gozrin spurred Nif forward, he himself was covered in some sort of burning substance that elicited a yell of pain and rage.

Gozrin needed to reduce the odds, and he needed to do it now.  He swung at the off-balance guardsman and hit him with a glancing blow, but one that put him right in the path of Nif's sharp teeth.  Nif got in one of his best bites of the day, savaging the guardsman's arm and shoulder, growling as he tasted blood.  Nif grinned;  the guardsman wasn't down, but he was in big trouble.

OOC:

Azgut misses his AoO on Kellan.

Azgut (Goblin 2) moves 10' to M19, provoking an attack of opportunity from Kellan, who misses.

Azgut attacks Kellan and misses.

Gorzin (Mounted Goblin) makes a Mounted Combat check to negate Kellan's attack on Nif.  Gorzin and Nif make a 5-foot step to L21, where they attack Kellan.  Gorzin hits Kellan for 2 damage, Nif hits Kellan for 9 (!!) damage.

Kellan, you need to make a DC 12 Fortitude Save to avoid an allergic reaction to Nif's bite.

Remember that if you shoot at or otherwise attack the mounted goblin you need to specify whether you are targeting the goblin himself or his mount.

Combat actions, please.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

After a moment, when Liseth was suitably satisfied that she was not in fact dead, the young teenaged girl cracked her eyes open to see that the mounted goblin was in fact leaving her alone.  She breathed a sigh of relief, her prayer for sanctuary must have worked.

But to her horror Liseth suddenly saw the entire situation: the goblin hadn't tried to come after her because he and his monster dog were mauling Kellan!  That dog gave him such a savage bite, she didn't even know how the guardsman was still able to stand!  She has to do something quickly, but she knows that the goblin need only turn around and it was her turn to be mauled.

She felt her heartbeat quicken as the fight took such a turn for the worse.  Liseth glanced around quickly for anyplace that might be relatively safe and then stepped between Pisca and Cato.  Finally the girl, hand still on her focus, radiated another pulse of healing light in which to bathe herself and her friends, [Language unknown: "Uretmo Hacknt!  Sti trss korareyin omiliochos na landostepe ofllna!"]  This time she found herself much less reluctant to exclude the goblins from her divine energy.

Kellan screamed as his arm was mangled, jerking his hand away and backing up, trying in vain to keep the mounted goblin at bay, an ineffectual attack towards the goblin dogs legs yielded little. Clutching his arm to his chest, blood could be seen oozing from between the links of his armor and pouring out from the cuff of his glove where is trailed on the ground in his wake,

He looked desperate, sweat beading on his brow and his breath coming in gasps, his jaw set against the pain and exhaustion as he fought on.

So many things happening at once.  The light from the human girl went off again, but this time Pisca felt her skin drink it in.  Her body inhaled the light and held its breath.

The Ogre Stomp moved into just the right place.  Just perfect, lining up opposite the gobbie and its dog.

Pisca heard her own voice shout, "Die gobbie!  Die!"  She felt the muscles in her arms draw her bow taught, and with the release there came the familiar hum of a bowstring.

And her skin exhaled with an Aaaahhhh.  Her neck felt better.  For hummie Ogre Stomp?  Even though she was looking right at him, the gnome wasn't sure that she really wanted to look.

Cato grimaced as Kellan was savaged by the goblin's dog.  "We have to kill that goblin!"  An obvious statement, really, but the midst of combat wasn't the best time for profound, well thought-out statements.  That would come later, assuming there was a later.

Cato hoped this ended soon.  He flung another dart of acid at the goblin riding the dog, but the screaming, light and blood threw off his aim somewhat.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Azgut grinned as the armored human stumbled backward, savaged by Nif's razor-sharp jaws.  He stopped grinning as he saw Gorzin take another arrow hit; he looked around and saw that it was the bow-wielding gnome who was causing so many problems.  Azgut saw that Gorzin was bleeding heavily; there was no way he could take another shot from that bow.  Since it looked as if Gorzin had the armored human well in hand, Azgut moved toward the gnome, dogslicer raised.  He would save Gorzin and maybe become an elite warrior himself!

Unfortunately for Azgut, the guardsman wasn't quite as finished as he seemed; he speared the goblin with his poleaxe as Azgut turned his attention to the other party members, killing him instantly.

Gozrin grunted as Pisca's arrow sliced open his ribcage, causing him to bleed profusely.  Gozrin felt a little light-headed, and wasn't helped by seeing Azgut leave off the attack on the guardsman only to be speared for his troubles.  Gritting his teeth at the stupidity of his footgoblin cohort, Gozrin spurred Nif forward; continuing to press the armored human while he himself drank the treasured healing potion he'd hoped he wouldn't have to use.  The medicinal liquid spread through his veins, closing wounds and refreshing him, readying him for the remainder of the battle.

Nif, frenzied with excitement, just barely missed a killing blow on the armored longshanks.  Of course, thought Gozrin, who tended towards fatalism.  But now, health fully restored, Gozrin readied his horsechopper; he would end this longshanks or die trying.

OOC:

Azgut (Goblin 2) moves 15' to J21, provoking an attack of opportunity from Kellan, who hits him for 9 points of damage, killing him.

Gorzin (Mounted Goblin) and Nif make a 5-foot step to M22, where Nif attacks Kellan and (just barely) misses.  Gorzin drinks a potion of cure moderate wounds, healing all damage.

Remember that if you shoot at or otherwise attack the mounted goblin you need to specify whether you are targeting the goblin himself or his mount.

Combat actions, please.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"Be careful Mr Storval!" Liseth cried when the monster dog raked against his mail armor.  The guardsman was still very hurt, that's easy for anyone to see.  She has never had to use so much divine energy before in such a short amount of time and it was beginning to wear on the girl; but Liseth was going to keep channeling healing energy until she collapsed from the effort.

[Language unknown: "Antne Ourughtho!  Laiv rotr onasca!"]  Again a wave of white, healing light pours from the teenage girl, washing over everyone and restoring Kellan to health.  Once again, the wave passes over and avoids the hostile goblins.

Standard Action: Channel Energy (Excluding Goblins and Goblin Dog) to heal 6 HPs to everyone.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

One goblin down, but the goblin riding the dog was now healed up. Okay...what to do?  Cato decided he'd concentrate on the mount instead. Maybe that would buy them a round as the rider extricated himself from his fallen mount. Or, at the very least, it would prevent the vicious dog from attacking Kellan again.

Once more, Cato flung out his hand, and once more a small gob of acid flew towards his foes. Cato tried to aim for one of the vial areas he vaguely remembered reading about in a tome Brodert had once shown him.

Pisca the Infallible Archer drew the fletching of a feathered shaft once again to her ear.  "What's that language you're speaking, Lysa?" she asked, just before releasing the arrow to fly free and make its way toward the goblin dog.

Then, without waiting for either the results of her shot or for an answer from the human girl, Pisca the Gnome of Conquest drew her blade and marched on the goblin menace.  "We know you've come for the Cathedral, Gobbie," the gnome cried, brandishing her blade.  "Your new leader will know you have failed when he sees your head on ...  what is that? ... on a pole!"

"Yeah.  A pole."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan, who had seemed so close to deaths door just a few moments ago, seemed to be back in fighting form. Moving in something of a semi circle he continued to back up and reposition as Gorzin and Nif advanced, getting himself more solidly between the goblin and his new friends,

Spitting a wad of blood as he saw Gorzin down the potion, he took a deep breath and readied his weary body for the long haul. He could practically hear Alergast's admonishment in his head "Breath Kellan, Breath..." He gave a weary smile despite himself at the thought.

He struck out a little more precisely this time, still missing, but it was notable improvement from his earlier more desperate attacks.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Gorzin dodged a stab from the annoying guardsman.  Then, as he began his attack, tragedy struck; acid covered his beloved Nif before an arrow took the goblin dog in the head, killing him.

"NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!"  Gorzin screamed, expertly rolling off his beloved goblin dog as it slumped to the ground.  Gorzin was now in a rage.  He forgot about the armored human and concentrated on the Nif-killing bowgnome.  Vengeance was all he could think about.  He dodged the armored man's clumsy poleaxe thrust and leapt at the gnome, bringing his horsechopper down into her with a satsifying crunch.  That's right, witch, he thought as the gnome grunted in pain.  Die.  Die like Nif.

OOC:

Nif dies to Cato's acid and Pisca's arrow.  No Nif-ty dogriding this time.  RIP Nif.

Gorzin (Mounted Goblin) moves to K22, attacking Pisca, hitting her, and doing 8 damage.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato sighed in relief as the goblin-dog succumbed to arrows and acid.  And that just left them with a crazed goblin hell-bent on vengeance.  It didn't look like Pisca would be able to survive another blow like that.

"Hey ugly!  Want some of what killed your dog?"  Cato flung an acid dart at the goblin, then backed up close to Kellan.  Hopefully, the enraged goblin would charge him and suffer as he ran past Kellan to get at the wizard.  Hopefully.  And hopefully Cato wouldn't end up with a gut full of horsechopper in the meantime.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

When the monstrous dog was brought down, Liseth thought that maybe the battle would have taken a turn in her companions' favor.  But all that it served to do was send the goblin rider into a rage, straight for Pisca!  Liseth cringed at the ferocity of the bloodletting that the little gnome endured; feeling the torn cloth of her own robe and wondering how it was that she was spared such a grievous wound.

Immediately the white-clad girl raised her arms, though her voice began to sound weary as beads of sweat appear on her brow.  [Language unknown: "Astiie a osna Isnoic!  Korresore nt waro ithaveillstr e ceetatwe larta cailiowi!"]

Self-preservation kicked in when Cato changed positions and Liseth suddenly noticed that there was nothing between her and the enraged goblin.  As quick as her legs would carry her, the girl limped after the mage and got behind him.  Clutching Cato's arm and peering at the goblin from behind him, Liseth pleadingly shouted an offer to the goblin, "Please stop fighting!  I...I might be able to save your dog!"

Might being the key word.  If the arrow were carefully removed and everyone acted quickly...she might be able to save its life.  If only the goblin would agree to stop fighting...

Kellan moved to flank the Goblin as he bore down on Pisca, wincing as he brought his horse chopper down, the results of the attack mercifully hidden from his view by the goblins back. Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Well, that was unexpected.  The gobbie actually answered the challenge.  Seeming, actually rather upset.  And so Pisca the Famous Goblin Pacifier woke from her dream of Goblin Pacification to some very serious hurt.  For the briefest of moments, she considered screaming in horror like a girl (albeit a gnomish girl) as the massive horsechopper came down upon her.  In the end, even though she did decided against the shrill (and highly dramatic) scream of terror, a cry of excruciating pain was indeed forced from her lips.

Her breath was coming ragged with pain, and her own blood covered the front of her once stylish Shoanti leathers.  With bow in one hand and rapier in the other Pisca Neep Freemish did the thing any Fearless Goblin Hunting Gnome would do.  She ran away.

Even as the burst of healing light pulled together her terrible wound and restored some of the blood to her body, she was on the move.  She dodged to the side, coming in an arc around to well behind Kellan Ogre Stomp.  Once safely within the protection of the massive hummie polearm the gnome gritted her teeth to staunch the pain and delivered a tremendous wet raspberry at the now-dogless goblin.

Gorzin growled as the hated gnome dodged him and managed to get away.  But through the din of battle, he heard the small longshanks make an offer; to bring his beloved Nif back.  Nif!  But could he trust her?  Could he trust them?!?

[OOC: Okay, Liseth, I like your creativity, and it's right in line with your character.  So I've thought about this a LOT this afternoon.  Here's the deal.  I set Gorzin's possibility of hearing your offer at DC 20.  He made his Perception check.  So he heard you.  Now the question is whether he will take you up on it.

Gorzin is outraged at Nif's death.  He's hostile.  (DC 25)  But you're offering something he really, really wants:  Nif back.  He REALLY loves Nif.  But he doesn't know if he can trust you, and he certainly doesn't like you as a group.  But Liseth personally hasn't done anything to him, as far as he can tell.  I've done some reading re: the Diplomacy skill and with all the situational modifiers and bonuses I've determined he will stop fighting if you make that DC 25 Diplomacy check.  With your 10 Diplomacy skill, that means you need a 15.  Or less if you have some way to boost it I haven't considered.

That's my ruling and the rationale behind it.  I didn't want to make this one secret (like most skill checks) because my usual rationale for secret checks doesn't apply (i.e., that the roll itself tells you the player something your character wouldn't know) and I want it to be in your hands as a player.  Make your check!]

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

The gnome braced herself for death her own or the gobbies or somebody's.  People were always dying.  Always.

Then, it occurred to her what was going on here, what the hummie girl had just said.  What the hummie girl was going to do.

"No!  Lysa, what are you doing?  This gobbie came in to kill your friends."

"You like killing humans.  Don't you, Gobbie?"  The gnome turned on the goblin.  She thrust out an accusing finger and then paid for it with a stab of pain that made her double over momentarily.  "And ... " she said through gritted teeth, "you'd do it again if you could too.  Wouldn't you?"

And then a flash of insight hit the gnome square between the eyes.  "And you know that we know this.  Don't you?  So why do you believe us?  Why do you believe that we'd just heal your dog and let you go?  Doesn't that sound a little ... suspicious?  What are the humans up to?  Eh, Gobbie?  The crafty humans.  What are the crafty humans up to?"

"I'll tell you what we want.  We want a trade.  We want to know things.  We know that Big Gugmut didn't organize this attack.  He may be the mighty son of a hobgoblin and a wild boar, but he's not smart enough to arrange this.  We want to know who gathered the tribes.  We want to know who planned the attack today."

"Doesn't that sound more like the crafty humans, Gobbie?  We want to know these things.  And, in exchange, we'll heal your dog and let you go.  How does that sound?  Fair trade?"

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Liseth was slightly taken aback by the offer that Pisca made.  That isn't what she meant at all!  She just wants the fighting to end before anyone else got killed: the goblin, Pisca; anyone.

Still peering from behind Cato and clutching his arm, Liseth could see the goblin pause when he heard her offer, so she continued as best she could, half responding to Pisca and half pleading with the goblin, "I don't want anybody to be killed.  I'm a healer, Mr Goblin.  I make people better.  If you'll let me, I know that I can make your dog better too.  But we all have to stop fighting before its too late!"

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Many thoughts went through Gorzin's head in the space of a second.  The small longshanks seemed sincere.  But the bowgnome was taunting him . . . as if he would betray his tribe for any reward.  The big, armored longshanks was still swinging at him with his cursed poleaxe.  They were not to be trusted.  None of them were to be trusted.  It was them, or him.

He would never see Nif again.

Gorzin screamed at the gnome, bringing his horsechopper up to attack her as he started to run, only to find his feet taken out from under him.  He landed facedown in the dirt, rising to his elbows to see the armored human bringing his poleaxe around for another swing.  So it was to be that way, was it?  Fine.  They were all going to die.

Every.

Single.

One.

OOC:
Unfortunately, Liseth's diplomacy fails.  It is a fight to the death.

Gorzin begins moving to attack Pisca, but is tripped by Kellan's attack of opportunity.  He is now prone, which gives him a +4 AC bonus to ranged attacks and a -4 AC penalty to melee attacks.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato held his breath as the goblin briefly considered the offer. He didn't think goblins would be inclined to follow through on such a thing, but maybe he was wrong.  But then the goblin screamed, Kellan swung, and the fight resumed. At least Cato's plan for Kellan had worked, though it was Pisca who still held the goblin's attention.

Cato flung another acid dart, though it sailed high over the prone form of the goblin.

He took his eyes of the combat to whisper to Liseth. "That was a good try. I'm sorry it didn't work out."

Liseth trembled with anxiety when the goblin screamed in the face of her offer and tried to chase after Pisca; only to be thrown to the ground by Kellan's quick poleaxe.  She slumped against Cato in defeat, a cold weight forming in her stomach "He won't stop until he's dead, will he?"

But maybe she could still help another person.  Pisca was still bleeding from the heavy slice she took a moment ago, even after the healing energy that Liseth had already washed over her.  She straightened herself, still holding on to Cato with one hand, and reached her other hand into the air.  The small girl's voice was this time weak and obvious strain showed on her features, [Language unknown: "Whitioainout Ovetedrom...teryinstr trilpa pr fievnc miosad..."]  A final white wave of healing energy poured from Liseth to mend Pisca's wound.

She collapsed against Cato, only able to remain standing thanks to his presence.  She spoke in a small, weary voice, "I'm all done, Mr Cato.  I don't think that I can help anymore..."

Kellan paused as negotiations proceeded. It was not easy going from the bloody flush of combat to a sudden halt as the Liseth spoke, this thing had murdered his neighbors, invaded his town and nearly killed him. Now it was Pisca that had been wounded and he tried to guess the gnomes thoughts as she spoke with the thing.

Taking it as a lesson in self control, Kellan prepared himself for the failure of diplomacy, and when it did, he batted Gorzin to the ground with a check from his axe haft, bringing the weapon around however proved to take longer than he thought in his weary state, coming down much too slow.

Things looked clearer, braver, more optimistic when your clavicle was attached.  Thanks to the human girl Pisca felt her flesh knit back together and said clavicle re-align itself, returning to its proper place.

And so the gobbie had refused the offer.  Then there was nothing to do but to end it.  No sense drawing this thing out.  The gnome trotted back to the place at which she had stood but moments ago.  From there the gobbie would be pinned between herself and Ogre Stomp, flat on its back.  It would be a bad place.

She risked the sweep of the horsechopper as she drew near, but it was a risk she was willing to take.  "You should have taken my offer," she spat at the prone goblin.  Then, "I hate gobbies.  Lets do this, Stomper.  You and me.  Lets put this gobbie down."

Gorzin grinned nastily as the gnome ran up to him, rapier drawn.  He dodged the armored guardsman's poleaxe as he hacked at her with his horsechopper, just missing when she leapt over his outstretched blade.

As Gorzin scrambled to his feet, he felt a burning pain. He looked behind him.  The guardsman had finally managed to score a quality hit, slicing him across the back.

The distraction proved fatal; he did not return his attention to the gnome before she had buried her rapier in his chest.  Gorzin looked down dumbly, dropping his horsechopper and slumping to his knees.

Gorzin took a rattling breath.

"Nif," he said.

And then he was dead.

Kellan moved over and nudged Gorzin's still form with the metal capped end of his pole axe. Seemingly content that he was not getting back up he moved the horse chopper away from the body before he exhaled in exhaustion.  Looking now to Pisca he gave her a double pat on her little gnomy shoulder

"We'll said...and well done" he gave a tired grin looking over to Cato and Liseth "Everybody ok?" He called out loudly enough for the gentleman behind the barrel to hear.

He felt stiff and tired, his body confused at the roller coaster of pain and relief it had experienced throughout the last few minutes. He still worried for the rest of his neighbors, but for the moment he needed to catch his breath.

Pisca turned her head to acknowledge the hand that came down on her shoulder and she nodded to acknowledge the sentiment.  "I'm alright," she replied.  "Thanks to Lysa.  What was that language you were speaking there again?" she asked over her shoulder.  The gnome pulled her wicked-thin blade from the chest of the dog-rider, then kneeled to wipe the blood off on the goblin's clothing.

"Nif," the gnome said.  "The last thing the gobbie said was, 'Nif'.  That's not a word in the goblin language, so I think it had to be a name.  What do you think?  Wife?  Son?  Daughter?  Who do you think was the last person that this gobbie called out to before he died?"  She shook her head and then began going through the dog-rider's possessions.

She spared a glance up at the hummie still hiding behind the barrel. For a moment the gnome stared hard at his features from under the brim of the large hat.  Then she went back to rifling the goblin's things.  "You know, hummie," she said without looking up from her work, "everyone's gathering at the Cathedral.  Might be best if you went there too.  Sorry about your dog."

"Say, do you hear anything?"  The gnome lifted her head.  With a thumb she pushed the hat back to clear her face and she sniffed at the breeze.

Cato suddenly smiled.  "Also, I don't mean to bring this up now, but Cato is actually my first name.  If you want to be formal, you can call me Mr. Crispin, but I prefer just Cato.  Especially given what we've been through since the festival, we probably don't need to be formal."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Liseth closed her eyes and released a sigh when Kellan and Pisca gave the goblin its killing blow.  She responded to both Kellan's query and Cato's mention of exhaustion with a silent nod of her head.  She'd used every bit of her divine energy in just a short time, and the act had left her both spiritually and emotionally drained.

She was still supporting herself on Cato when he clarified his name to her.  Her voice was still weak when she responded, "Oh, I'm sorry Mr Crispin.  Um...Cato.  If I was being too formal."

Breathing deeply for a moment, Liseth steadied herself before releasing her hold on the mage and walking slowly to Kellan and Pisca.  She went straight to Pisca where the gnome was rooting through the possessions of the recently deceased goblin and checked over her injury.  It was clear that the girl was not accustomed to addressing someone smaller than herself who wasn't in fact a child.

Liseth tried to recall the introduction that was given by the gnome all those minutes ago, "Ms...um...Freemish?  Father Garrick told me that its the language of the heavens.  Not very many people understand it; Father Garrick does, but it always comes to me naturally whenever I channel divine energy like I was doing."  Liseth finished her observation of Pisca's injuries.  "It looks like you're mostly healed; a good night of rest should make you all better."  She clasped her hands together in front of herself and finished on an apologetic note, "Um...there might be a scar though, since I wasn't able to completely close the wound."

"Well then," Pisca replied as she continued to cast about for any indications of goblin fighting, "I'll have to find a boy gnome that likes scars then."  This seemed said in all seriousness, though that may have been due to the preoccupation with her search.  Then, in the same vein she asked, "Are you saying that you only you don't really speak this language?  That it just comes to you when you ... channel divine energy?  That you don't really understand what you're saying?," asked the gnome.

"That's curious and odd.  Curious and odd makes my teeth itch.  Odd.  Curious.  Interesting," said the gnome in her far away distracted voice.  "We'll have to get to the bottom of this."

"Oh, well...it's not exactly like that."  Liseth stepped away from Pisca after satisfying herself that the gnome's injury was no longer a problem.  "I understand what I'm saying when I speak it.  I can even talk like that when I'm not channeling; it just requires a lot more concentration."

Then the girl walked to Kellan and checked his injuries as well.  "Mr Storval...you're all covered in blood."  Her primary concern was the vicious bite that he had received from the monster dog and Liseth carefully probed the site of the wound, seemingly pleased that there was no trace of it left.  "I think you'll be okay Mr Storval.  It looks like I managed to close up all of your injuries."

"Oh.  Good.  Not odd and curious might be even better," said the gnome.  So, how do you say the name of that language in the language itself, Lys?" she asked.  "And how would you say 'To Speak' in that language?  As in 'I speak Common.?"

"Say, um, Kellan ... "  Doing three ... no ... four things all at the same time seemed to be slowing the gnome down.  Patting through the goblin's bloody pockets, listening for signs of fighting, directing an impromptu language lesson, and now making enquiries of the young human guard, mustering the concentration to juggle the four tasks seemed to be taking their toll on the gnome.  It didn't stop her, but it did seemed to be slowing her down.  "Didn't you say something before about ... an arrow ... being ... sorely appreciated?  What did you mean by that?"

As you recover from the battle and discuss what has happened, the man who had been hidden behind the rain barrel for almost the entirety of the fight seems to have decided it is safe to emerge.  He stands and strides toward you, arms outstretched and a wide smile on his face, addressing all four of you.  “That was AMAZING!!  I have never seen a finer display of martial prowess than you four showed right there!”

“My name is Aldern Foxglove.  I have estates south of Sandpoint.”  He waved his hand dismissively in a vaguely southerly direction.  He then turned to Liseth.  “Milady, I fear I shall die forlorn should I fail to learn your name.  Your beauty and courage were a clear inspiration to your bodyguards," at this, Aldern nodded at Pisca, Cato, and Kellan, "during that battle!  Again and again, that goblin grievously wounded your comrades, but he could never wound them beyond your ability to heal.  In my experience, such power is rarely accompanied by such selflessness.”  The man took a knee and Liseth’s hand.  “I must ask if you will join me for dinner at the Rusty Dragon at some point in the near future.  At your convenience of course.”  He stared deeply into Liseth's eyes for at least ten seconds.

The kneeling noble suddenly remembered that others were present aside from Liseth.  “Oh, and of course your henchmen should join us as well!”  He looked around somewhat nervously, possibly to assure himself that there was no further goblin activity in the area.  “I would love the chance to talk with you more and to reward each of you properly for saving my life!  Tomorrow night, shall we say?”

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan turned and seemed to recognize the man. When Foxglove was more or less done lavishing his affections of Liseth, Kellan gave him a nod, leaning on his poleaxe as they conversed.

"Mr. Foxglove, good to see you escaped relatively unharmed...I'm sorry about your hound." Glancing over to the dogs body.

He then looked to Pisca, seeming to wish to avoid the topic of dinner all together, or at the very least leave it to Liseth. Kellan looked uncomfortable with the idea and eager to change the topic.

"When we were first attacked, near the wagon...you shot that goblin right in the head as he was climbing over towards me" he explained, slowing down as he finished as if he was now thinking the situation over.

"Was the fletching the same? How big was that arrow? Bigger than the ones in Piscas quiver?"

He turned now to Cato, giving him a knowing smile "You sure can work some magic, where did you learn to do all that?

"Ehem."

*tap*tap*tapity*tap*  Pisca had her arms folded in a tight knot across her chest as her foot tapped out her annoyance in a staccato rhythm.

"Ehem.  Ehem-hem," the gnome ehem'ed.

"We're not henchmen," she corrected, once she'd gotten the hummie's attention.  "That's hench-gnomes", Pisca then added as though, despite the superior numbers of the male humans, all semantics should defer to those of the gnomish race.  "Or minions.  Minions would be acceptable."

Then, with all improprieties corrected, her frown turned upside down.  She burst into a smile and presented herself.  "I'm Pisca Neep Freemish."  She removed her hat, letting loose a cascade of strawberry blond hair that shone in the sunlight, and presented her hand to be kissed as well.  "You can call me Ms Freemish.  Lysa does.  This is Liseth Thoradin, and Kellan Ogre Stomp Storval, and Cato Crispin, otherwise known as Mister Christian ... er Crispin.  Mister Crispin."  The gnome frowned as though wondering where that name had come from.

"And we would be delighted to accept your invitation to dine on  Ameiko's finest delicacies."

"Ehem," she ehem'ed once again and jiggled her extended hand so that the hummie would get the hint.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato frowned at Aldern's words.  Henchman?  Bodyguards?  But the he remembered the spectacle the four of them had just made in Sandpoint.  If anything was going to draw attention to this tiny town, it was this.  Better if the stories Aldern spread just featured one named protagonist.  Cato glanced over at Liseth to see how she was taking the sudden attention.

"Along with Pisca, I'd be delighted to accept your invitation.  But I did relatively little.  Liseth was amazing with her healing, and Kellan and Pisca took most of the hits from the goblins and that dog."

Cato turned away from Aldern and Liseth to focus on Kellan.  "I'm sorry to say my magic isn't the result of some grand story.  Just too many hours spent pouring over books, most recently here in Sandpoint, with the town sage."  Cato hoped his impromptu bluff would satisfy his new comrade's curiosity; he had no desire to describe his intensive training and resulting entanglements.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Liseth had originally intended merely to ask Mr Foxglove if he was injured at all, but his forwardness took her completely by surprise.  She was speechless while he complimented her again and again; blushing furiously when he went down on his knee and took her hand, "Mr Foxglove, I, um...they aren't..."  Liseth wrenched her gaze away from the nobleman to glance around at the others; seeking some kind of support.

She was flustered though, when little help came from her new companions.  Pisca made introductions for everyone; with Liseth merely nodding to Mr Foxglove when the gnome gave him her name.  Then both Pisca and Cato readily accepted the invitation to dinner; so, not knowing what else to do, Liseth acquiesced as well, "...Thank you Mr Foxglove.  Of course we will accept your invitation.  It would be rude to do otherwise..."  The last part almost seemed almost as though she was trying to convince herself.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

“I escaped unharmed due to the good work of you and your companions, Guardsman Storval.  And may I offer my congratulations on your Ogre Stomp! win.”  Aldern Foxglove smiled nostalgically.  “The townspeople have spoken of almost nothing else.  I have tried my hand at Das Korvut’s contraption myself.  As you might expect, I was not as successful as you proved to be."

Aldern looked sadly over at the lifeless body of his canine companion.  “I must admit I am grieved at the loss of my hound as well.  I did not expect such loyalty and tenacity from him.  I actually just purchased him at the festival today, if you can believe it!  He was a prize-winner and I had intended to breed him with some of my finer bit . . .,” he coughed and looked embarrassedly at Pisca and Liseth, “er, female hounds.  The quality of my hounds is something I’ve become known for, if you don’t mind me saying so myself.”

Aldern seemed to recognize that no one really wanted to talk about his dog-breeding program at this particular moment.  He smiled at Pisca's commentary and shook her outstretched hand with the utmost seriousness.  “Minion, then.”  He nodded in agreement.  “My apologies, Miss Freemish.  And I am pleased to hear that you all will accept my dinner invitation.”  His eyes swept from Pisca, to Cato, to Kellan, before finally settling upon Liseth.  “I will ensure that Ameiko has nothing but her finest prepared for us when we arrive to sup tomorrow evening.  For you deserve nothing less than the absolute best.”  He gave Liseth’s hand a gentlemanly kiss. "At the seventh hour after noon, then?"

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Pisca kept offering her hand, lifting her hand up for the requisite kiss upon her delicate gnomish hand.  "Hmph," she hmph'ed when the kiss never came.  She tossed her head and gathered her soft blond air behind her head before jamming the big, floppy, hummie hat down on her head once more.

"Well, there's a hummie who clearly has no idea how to treat a gnome," she said, before turning up her nose and then turning away from the retreating back of the human noble.  "So, what was that you were saying about arrows again, Stomper?  I shot a goblin in the head?  Hmmm," she hmmm'ed and tapped her lips with a finger.  "I don't remember that.  You'll have to show me where that was.  If we can find the arrow maybe we can tell who it was from the fletching."

The gnome bent to the task of gathering up the dog-rider's gear.  "Sounds like the fighting's stopped.  At least, I can't hear any from here.  But, I suppose we'd better check in with someone who can tell us more.  Stomper?  Where would your people set up an emergency command center?"

"This is a fine piece.  Ha-cha!"  The gnome thrust with the horsechopper in an awkward imitation of some of the moves that Kellan had executed only minutes before.  "Say, Lysa, what do you think of the hummie?  I mean Foxface ... er ... Foxglove.  I think he was quite take with you.  He's handsome.  For a hummie.  And he's rich.  And he has his own haunted mansion too.  But wait.  Don't you already have a boyfriend?  I thought I heard ...  Nevermind."  Pisca swung the horsechopper in a wild and dangerous circle, nearly losing her footing and dumping herself on the ground before giving up.  "Yup.  This will be fine for our armory," she said, though to whom she was speaking was ... not ... entirely ... clear.  "A fine addition to our armor."  And then the gnome tipped her head back and grinned up at the three humans.  "Don't you think?" she asked.

"Now if some of you could help me gather up these things, maybe we can see about selling them," she said as she turned to her spoils of war and began handing pieces to each of the humans.  "We'll need funds to build a chapter house, after all.  Or, maybe we'll just rent to start out.  I mean, we have to have some place for our minions to stay.  When we get some."

"We *are* starting an adventuring group, aren't we?  I thought we'd discussed this.  After what we did today we almost have to.  We could call ourselves Angel's Arrow.  Or The Sandpoint Six.  Or Penchant's Fall.  Or The Crimson Green.  Or The Wavy Lines.  Or Gnome and Company.  Or Timely Intervention."  Pisca inhaled deeply after rattling off the long list in a single breath of whatever seemed to come to her mind.

"Oh.  I almost forgot."  She spilled the coin that she'd collected from the two goblins into a large purple cloth of the kind often worn as a headscarf, then she divided the one pile into four smaller even ones.  "Here.  Eight for each of us," she said, and gave each of the others their share.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato tried to stifle his laughter at Foxglove's obvious fawning over Liseth.  It was painful to watch the young woman frustrations, however.

"Thank you, Aldern.  We'll make sure to meet you at 7.  And we'll make sure Ms. Thoradin is there for the dinner as well.  We'll be looking forward to it."

Cato chuckled aloud as the noble left their little group.  "Sorry, about that, Liseth.  I wanted to say something, but Aldern seemed so...insistent.  And I know better than get in the way of what a noble wants."  Someone listening closely could probably detect an unusual amount of regret in the last sentence.

"But on to more entertaining matters.  Pisca, thank you for dividing everything up."
Cato gladly pocketed his share of the coins.  "I agree we seem to work well together.  Do you think Sandpoint needs an adventuring company?  Certainly, there's only one Pathfinder lodge in all of Varisia, but this seems to be a quiet little town, and this is the first such incident since I've arrived here.  Still, I was just talking with Brodert that maybe I need to do more than assist him in his research.  Perhaps this will help to broaden my horizons.  I think we need to work on the name, though."

Finally, Cato turned back to Kellan.  "Yes, you're most impressive with your weapon.  Where did you get training?  Even the Sheriff, as skilled as he is, doesn't seem to be leading many classes in weapon handling."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan wandered the battlefield a little as everybody conversed, nudging a fallen here, overturning a basket there. He seemed a little pensive at the most recent conversation with Foxglove.

As Pisca pulled out her horse chopper Kellan cracked a smile, watching her swing it around he perked up at her suggestion of forming an adventuring group. "We should probably try to find Sheriff Hemlock, he and Alergast Barett are probably over at the Garrison. As far as an adventuring group is concerned...well, I would need to think about it a little. It's a good life here in Sandpoint...well, before the attack of course. It will recover, hopefully...we did after Chopper, and the fire..."  He trailed off as he began walking towards the north, seeming to have seen something.

Replying to Cato now he spoke without looking towards him "Well the a Sheriff is more of a swordsman, Alergast Barett was the one to teach me most of...ah..." He broke off as he moved to a jog, then a full out run before skidding to a halt in the dust next to a body.

Dropping his pole axe to the ground with a clatter, he reached up to feel the severed neck of Dacen Kresk, now obviously dead. "Damn it..." He whispered after a few moments of silence, then winced and turned away, reaching over to close the young mans eyes "You deserved better than this Dacen...we will get you cleaned up" straightening the boys body and looking around for something "Before your family sees you, let them know that you died fighting" he was holding back tears as he pulled down a piece of canvas that had served as a shade over a merchants stall. Laying it out he gently rolled the boy into the canvas and uses some of the left over ties to bind the body at the neck and ankles, seemingly intent on carrying it back himself.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Alergast Barett was tired; it had been a long evening.  He had nearly been overwhelmed when a large group of goblins came running over the Undercliff Bridge (or Tanner’s Bridge, as some called it) in an apparent attempt to sack Sandpoint as soon as Father Zantus’ thunderstone went off.  Fortunately Lerric Jumberlee, another guardsman, had been there, and Das Korvut was nearby dismantling his Ogre Stomp! contraption.  Between them, they had just about managed to stem the tide of goblins (although a number had gotten through) until Sheriff Hemlock and Guardsman Tobas Mikken arrived.  The five of them managed to drive the goblins back out of the town, but not without some serious injuries; Father Zantus was tending to the severely-wounded Tobas right now.

As soon as the fighting was done Alergast went to find his family.  He had quickly reunited with Amele, Aeren, and Verah, who all seemed to be okay, although Aeren was still shaken up from seeing a goblin brutally kill a dog right in front of him.  Alergast thanked Desna that they had been some of the ones whom Father Zantus and Kerr Mollin had herded into the cathedral for safety.

Alergast had still not found Kellan though; he had heard reports that the young guardsman and a group of others were involved in the thick of the fighting around the cathedral and prevented it from being burned, but no one could say where he had gone after that.  Alergast was concerned; it sounded like there had been just as many goblins attacking from the Northern Gate as there had been over the bridge.  He briefly wondered how the goblins had made it through the Northern Gate.  It was supposed to have been closed and barred for the ceremony.

As Alergast approached the White Deer, he felt a huge sense of relief.  There was Kellan!  He was kneeling near the front of the inn; nearby were the gnome he had met earlier, the young acolyte who had been with Kerr Mollin, and Brodert Quink’s assistant.  Alergast was so relieved that he ran right past the departing Aldern Foxglove without even acknowledging his presence, but the man had a glazed look and a slight smile on his face; he seemed not to even see Alergast as the guardsman ran past.

“KELLAN!!”  Alergast shouted with a smile as he ran up.  “It’s good to see you!  I was worried you had had the same . . .”  He stopped immediately as he saw the body by which Kellan knelt, and dropped to one knee himself.

“Oh, no.”  The big man’s face crumpled.  “Dacen.”  He gently touched the late guardsman’s inert body.  “We were finally going to invite him out drinking tonight after the ceremony.”  He sat back.  “What am I going to tell Nedrick and Polla?”  He looked over at Kellan and put a comforting hand on his friend’s shoulder.  “Do you know what happened here?  Was he with you?”

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"They just don't live long enough, Pisca dearest."  That's what Aunt Hattie often said about the human reaction to death.  Humans died a lot.  "But don't tell them that, dear.  They don't appreciate it."

"I'm sorry," Pisca said instead.  With the hummies kneeling by the side of their dead comrade, she was nearly eye to eye with them.  "I'm sorry," she said again, "for your loss."  She backed away and meandered about, a bit aimless after having been caught up in the grief that the two guards were experiencing over the death of their friend.  She looked up and found herself near the North Gate itself.  Why was this place so lightly guarded?  That was certainly something of a mystery.

The gnome felt her nose twitch, and she began to cast about for the revealing things that would be oh so interesting.

Perception check, please.  Looking for anything interesting.  Signs of break in would qualify.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Still stunned by his demeanor, Liseth could only watch wide-eyed and nervous as the nobleman Mr Foxglove continued to speak with the others while still granting her the majority of his attention.  Her cheeks were still red with embarrassment when he kissed her hand and Liseth only managed a faint nod in response to his question.  When the nobleman finally released her and departed, Liseth brought her hand up to her chest and watched him leave.

"I don't know what to think Ms Freemish," Liseth didn't respond until after Mr Foxglove was too far away to hear her, "he's, um...really very forward.  I don't think that I like it..."  The girl still had a look about her like an animal that was staring at its predator.  "Do I have a boyfriend already?  I don't know...maybe?"  Kerr's image came into her mind.  Was he her boyfriend?

Then she looked towards Cato and Kellan, then to Pisca, "I'm sorry that he called you my henchmen.  Or, um, minions.  I didn't mean for that."  Liseth was holding the hand the was kissed with her other hand, but she sounded very apologetic.

Liseth's blushing diminished, to be replaced by confusion, when Pisca began spouting off various names for their group.  "Adventuring group?"  Liseth had heard about adventurers of course, but she never considered herself to be able to do the same sort of things.  Slaying monsters, exploring ruins and dungeons...she'd never even been in a fight before today.  Would they really want her to be a part of their adventuring team?

She stared at Pisca when a number of gold coins were placed into her hands, "Ms Freemish, where did...is this from the goblins?"  Her cheeks gained a red tinge again and she looked with a mixture of bewilderment and slight horror at the coins in her hands, "It...Ms Freemish, it isn't nice to take money from the dead."

But that was forgotten immediately when Kellan spotted the body of the other guard.  Liseth gasped and ran/limped to where Kellan, and now another Sandpoint guard, were standing over the body in obvious grief.  She gently touched the horrible wound on his neck before withdrawing her hand.  "There...there's nothing that I can do."  Tears welled up in her eyes when she looked upon the dead guard's pale face, "I'm so sorry Mr Storval; the goblins must have gotten him before they started their attack on the cathedral.  He can't...he isn't any older than I am..."

Liseth's shoulders slumped where she knelt over the body.  Then with wavering hands she began to summon water from the air to wash the blood off of the young man.  While cleaning up the body, Liseth began to sing a slow, sad song in a high, gentle voice; while all the while tears streamed down her face for the death of a young man that she never knew.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"Everything dies," said the gnome in a soft voice that, perhaps didn't really want to be heard.  "Life is for the living."

She sighed.

Pisca looked from the bar to the gate, lying on the ground next to the adjoining wall to the body of the young hummie guard.

She sighed again.

"I bet they climbed the wall," she said to no one in particular.  "Then a couple of those badger butts opened the gate for the others.  That's how they got in."

She turned back once again to the humans grieving over their fallen.  She stood and watched.  Time passed.  Or so it seemed to.

"Er, Kellan?  Where did you say you saw that gobbie?  You know, arrow?  Head?  I'm going to take a look."  Once given the place, the gnome leaves the others behind as she searches for the goblin with an arrow in its head.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

When Cato saw the body of Dacen Kresk, he felt immediately ashamed.  Of course people had been hurt or killed in this attack.  He mentally kicked himself.  He should have known better.  Even the best-planned Hellknight operations inevitably saw some injuries.  What were the chances goblins could rampage through the town without anyone dying?

Then Cato had a horrible thought.  What about Brodert?  Had the sage made it back safely?  What if the goblins had found him?  He'd have to go see as soon as he could.  But first, he had to do something here.

Cato put his hand on Kellan's shoulder.  "I'm sorry, Kellan.  I'm sorry we couldn't save everyone.  We should make sure something like this never happens again.  Make sure these people didn't die for nothing."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"He...ah..." His voice broke, his eyes taking in a reddish, glossy hue. In truth it was equal part's relief that the Baretts were alright, and sorrow for the loss of his young brother in arms.  "No...we just, found him jut now...like this" he explained to Alergast as he tied off the second leather strip around the boys ankles. The water from Liseths spell damped the cloth but served to clean the boy up so that he looked more presentable.

Listening to Pisca's question he nodded to her and gestured towards where they had been fighting before "Yeah, over there...the wagon that I hit with my axe...he should still be in there." He ran a hand over his face and exhaled deeply "Your right Cato" he agreed with a nod " We fought well...but...Dacen's death is not on our hands...this goblin...the chief...Gorgut...Gormut...whoever he is, he's the one that needs to answer for this" his words taking on an edge as he handed both his and Daven's weapons to Alergast before stooping to pick up the body.

Dacen had only been 16, but well built and clad in chainmail. Kellan shifted his grip on the body as he straightened then nodded as if he was ready to go, making his way towards the Cathedral as a steady pace.

"Thank you all...for the kind words" he assured them "I just don't know what I'm going to tell his parents" giving Alergast a knowing look.

Suddenly she reached a hand up and tugged on the back of Kellan's uniform.  "Mr Storval?"  She moved to look up into his eyes, "Don't be angry Mr Storval.  Anger only makes things worse, and leads to more people getting hurt."  Then Liseth continued following him back to the Cathedral.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

The four of you, along with Alergast Barett, led a somber, quiet procession back to the cathedral square.  Kellan took the lead; he carried young Dacen’s lifeless body as if it were the most treasured possession he could ever hope to possess.  As you walked the road back to the cathedral, other citizens of Sandpoint, most still in shock from the attack, quietly watched, murmured subdued blessings, or removed their headgear out of respect for what amounted to the eldest Kresk boy’s funeral procession.

When you arrived at the cathedral square you saw scores of people grouped around five sheet-covered bodies laid reverently on the ground.  Two of the bodies, so much smaller than the others, had couples kneeling near them who wept with such an unfathomable sorrow that it made the prospect of joy seem distant and unimaginable.  Torches had been lit; their flickering illumination served only to underscore the solemnity of the occasion and the finality of what had occurred.

The crowd moved aside seemingly of its own volition as Kellan strode forward with a slow, steady pace to, almost ceremonially, lay Dacen Kresk’s body next to the others.  As he did so, Kellan was shocked to recognize the body of Lerric Jumberlee, a middle-aged Sandpoint guard who had been a mentor and father-figure to almost every single one of the current guards, and whose constant battle with his waistline would finally end.  He also saw the bodies of Saddra Niccoran, an older woman who had lived in Sandpoint for time out of mind, and Bax Dunner, a glassworker whose grevious wounds indicated he had not gone down without a fight.

Alergast, his face white, knelt down next to the older guardsman’s corpse, supporting his head with one hand as he placed the other reverentially on Lerric’s body.  After a moment, his shoulders began to shake; he then dissolved into the deep, wracking sobs that are the almost-physical response to unendurable grief.  Lerric was the man who had convinced Alergast to join the Sandpoint Guard, Kellan knew; he had always treated the big man like a son.

Lerric had treated all of them like sons.

Liseth’s sorrowful observation of these proceedings was interrupted by Kerr Mollin, who walked up to her, took her hands, and stared at her with hollow eyes.  She could see from the blood on his white acolyte’s uniform that he had spent the attack healing and ministering to those injured in the assault.

As Kerr’s eyes filled with tears, he enveloped Liseth in an embrace that she was sure he would have been too embarrassed or hesitant to bestow in any vaguely-normal situation.  “I was so worried about you,” he whispered in her ear.  “When I saw you weren’t among those who made it into the cathedral.  So worried.  And then I heard you were fighting . . .”  He held her tightly, trembling, as if he thought she might be a dream or vanish into the vapor of his imagination.

Cato was relieved to see Brodert Quink in the crowd, alive and uninjured.  The old sage had clearly been looking for the young man, and when their eyes met his face broke out into a smile so broad that Cato could almost see the incredible tension dissipating through it.  Quickly masking his joy out of respect for the solemnity of the occasion, Quink walked over and grabbed the young wizard’s hand with both of his, as if he had feared that he might never be able to grasp it again.

The scholar looked at Cato.  “I am glad to hear you are well, lad,” he said, with a slight hitch to his subdued voice.  “Very glad.  The stories people were telling . . . well, let’s just say you and your friends probably won’t need to buy drinks in this town anytime soon.  They had you fighting off 20 goblins and a small squadron of goblin cavalry near the Northern Gate!  I didn’t think . . . well, just know I am glad to see you up and about, Scholar Crispin.”

Their reunion was interrupted by Father Zantus, who raised his voice and called all in the square to the traditional Rite of Passage for the Dead.  As the priest read through the liturgy, receiving the traditional responses from those gathered, Pisca stole through the edges of the crowd, searching for the goblin that had died to the mysterious arrow.

Her sharp eyes found what she was looking for.  The dead goblins had been piled in a corner of the square.  As the call and response of the humans’ religious rite concluded, Pisca looked at the strange black-fletched, black-shafted arrow sticking out of one goblin’s skull and thought about what, if anything, it might signify.

For a moment ... for the briefest of moments, Pisca's heart had skipped a beat.  Gnomes.  The gobbies had killed gnomes.  She hadn't even known that there were any other gnomes in Sandpoint.  But then the human couples gathered around the bodies made the scene clear.  They were human children.  Humans were very touchy about their children.  There would be a lot of anger here.  A lot of anger.  Pisca, the Bystanding Gnome, slipped away and into the crowd.

A black arrow.  Pisca ran a small gnomish finger along one dark feather of the black fletching.  Who would use a black arrow?  One does not accidentally fall into using arrows of pure black.  (Well, maybe.  A mistaken shipment.  A special discount price.  Maybe.)  One *usually* doesn't fall accidentally into the use of black arrows.  That takes a special purpose.  Or ... a special obsession.

The gnome pushed the big hummie hat back on her head and ran her eyes over the pile of goblin dead.  Had this been the only goblin to fall to a black arrow?  The gnome looked up, and then about, her eyes taking in the streets and alleys, the roofs and walls.  Where had the arrow been shot from?  Kellan didn't see the archer.  How far away would the archer have to have been?  Pisca shook her head.  Won't be finding that out anytime soon.  She drew a blade and cut the shaft at the point where it entered the goblin's head, coming away with a black feathered stick.

With the half-arrow gripped in one hand like a scepter, the gnome made her way back to the mourning crowd.  As she weaved through the forest of humans she wondered how Jubrayl had done during the attack.  Could it hurt to pay a social call?  Did she care?

Knowledge Local roll please, for information on who might use arrows with both black fletching and a black shaft.

Perception Take 20 to spot other black arrows in the pile of bodies.

Also, is the arrow Right-sized?  Or is it sized for one of the Big People?

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato's face brightened in a smile when he met Brodert in the crowd outside the cathedral.  Just as quickly, his expression changed somber as the Rite started.  After it had ended, Cato addressed the sage.

"It's good to see you, Brodert.  I was worried when the chaos overtook the town.  I should have realized you'd be far away from any excitement."  Cato's expression brightened a little, then darkened again as he continued.

"Do you know anything about the local goblin tribes?  Have they ever staged anything like this before?  Is this the work of just one tribe, or several?  I admit I've been reading too much about Thassilon to pay attention to more current developments."

As they talked, Cato walked over to Pisca, and briefly introduced the gnome and the sage.  "Is that the mysterious arrow, Pisca?  Any leads as to who else was fighting the goblins?"

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Pisca tipped her head up to meet the gaze of Cato Crispin and the older human mage.  "Hullo, Brodert Quink."  The gnome offered a grim smile, appropriate for the death and mourning that filled the air.  She held up the half-arrow of which the young human mage had enquired.  "Do you see this?  This is hummie ... er ... human-sized.  It was fired by a Big Person.  The black shaft and the black fletching are not common.  No one makes black arrows without a purpose.  And, the only reason I can think of for using a black arrow is night hunting.  That and one other reason.  To send a message.  I think someone uses these arrows to say, 'This is me and you'd better watch out.'"

"I found two more beside this one in goblins on the pile back there.  Each of them was sunk into a gobbie head.  That's good shooting."

Pisca shook her head, her mouth dimpled into a moue of thought.  She held the half-arrow up to the sunlight as though greater illumiation might bring her the bright light of inspiration.  She shook her head again.

"I can't help thinking that I'm missing something.  That I should know this.  Someone with arrows like this should be known.  But no," she sighed, "I don't know who's arrows these are."

"Oh badgers.  This will bother me all day.  I'll keep thinking about it.  It's as though it's on the tip of my tongue.  Aaaghrrr.  I hate this.  Don't you?  Don't you hate this too?"

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"Hmmmmmmm."  Brodert Quink took the arrow from Pisca and inspected it closely, running the tips of his fingers along the wood and lightly brushing them over the feathers.  "This is very interesting."  He handed it back to Pisca and looked at her seriously.  "I do not know for a certainty of any local persons who might use this sort of arrow," he said thoughtfully, "but now that I think on it I recall an incident that occurred many years ago, if you'll indulge my recollection."  He gave Pisca an apologetic sort of smile.

"At that time, a group of slavers was apparently operating in the area between Sandpoint and Magnimar.  People were disappearing from homesteads and travelers were abducted from the roads.  It was a terrifying period, to tell you the truth, even for those living in Magnimar, as I was at the time.  None of the authorities were really equipped to deal with these ruffians; I remember that a couple of members of the Sandpoint Guard were assigned to patrol the road, and both were horribly killed and staked out next to it."  The scholar's expression indicated how distasteful he found this.

The older sage sighed.  "Magnimar had bigger issues to deal with than road security, apparently.  Then one day a caravan found the bodies of 27 men carefully staked next to the road in the exact same manner that the Sandpoint Guard had been.  From the descriptions I heard most of them had an arrow that looked much like this one buried in their skull."  He gestured at the arrow Pisca held.

"One of these arrows was plunged into the chest of the man who was apparently the slavers' leader.  Attached to it was a card of some sort.  This card carried the emblem of the Eagle Knights and a warning to slavers that this was the end to which they would come if they ever operated in the area again."

"There were no attacks after that; everything went back to normal.  There was a lot of speculation about who might have been responsible, let me tell you.  A group of itinerant Eagle Knights?  Members of the Twilight Talons?  Some other group that wished to divert suspicion or attention by foisting it off on one of the most famous anti-slavery organizations in the world?  It was much discussed in the taverns for months after, believe me."  He shrugged.  "The mystery remained unsolved, and eventually faded from memory.  But who knows?  Perhaps the mysterious attacker or attackers are still around.  Or perhaps there is someone who is emulating them?  Or maybe it's all just happenstance.  There are many possibilities, but we really don't know enough to say for certain."

He smiled at Pisca.  "But is certainly is very interesting, don't you think?"  He turned to Cato.  "I'm afraid that goblin organization and habits are not one of my specialties, my friend.  You know who you should try and track down is Shalelu Andosana.  She knows EVERYTHING about the goblin activity around here.  She comes into town once every three months or so."  He nodded.  "But if I recall correctly she was just here recently so she might not be back for a while."

The gnome gave a profound nod once the story was done.  "Those are some people who like to send a message, alright."

"Shalelu Andosana ...  Shalelu Andosana ...  Where have I heard that name before?  I've heard that name.  Aaaahh!"  Pisca the Knowledge Deprived frowned and folded her arms across her chest.  "Never mind," she said in a cross voice.  "I'll know it when I'm ready to know it and not before."

"I'll tell you one thing I do know about, though.  I know about gobbies," said the gnome as she threw and exclamatory finger into the air.  "The local tribe on the Lost Coast is the Mosswood tribe lead by Big Gugmut.  But there are at least two other tribes here.  See that one there," and the gnome pointed at one of the bodies on the pile of goblins.  "That's a Licktoad.  And that one there.  That's a Seven Tooth.  Somebody's gotten three tribes to work together!  Maybe all five!!!"

"And I know it wasn't Big Gugmut," Pisca added.  "He's strong and has a reputation as a terror.  But, from what I hear, he couldn't organize his way out of a soap bubble.  No.  There's someone else behind this.  Someone who's probably still out there now."

"Any interest in going down to the Fatman's Feedbag?" she asked the others without a proper consideration of her question, "I have to find someone down there."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

For once Liseth did not seem embarrassed by the display of affection.  When Kerr put her into an embrace Liseth shook lightly for a few moments before bursting out in tears and hugging him tightly against her.  The girl laid her head against Kerr's chest while she sobbed, "It's so awful Kerr.  So many people hurt and killed.  Even little children.  Why would the goblins want to hurt so many people?  Why did they want to destroy the Cathedral?"

Liseth continued to hold Kerr throughout Father Zantus's reading of the Rites, slowly putting a stop to her sobbing and calming herself, however slightly.  "I was so scared Kerr; when one of the goblins tried to get me, riding a horrible monster dog.  He slashed at me, with a wicked curved blade.  It must have gotten caught up in my robe, I think.  But Mr Storval saved me..."

She sighed wearily against Kerr, "I'm so tired Kerr.  I've never felt drained like this before.  It was all that I could do to help everyone when the goblins kept cutting and stabbing them.  Mr Storval and Ms Freemish, they were hurt so badly.  I thought that they would be killed if I was anywhere else."  Finally Liseth looked up into Kerr's eyes, "I'm sorry that I made you worry about me."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan had managed at least the semblance of a stiff upper lip during the procession, but when Alergast lost it, Kellan quickly followed suit. Embracing Dacen's shrouded  body he wept openly, his tears joining the dampness from Liseth's cleaning. Inhaling with a congested sound he wiped at his nose with his uniform sleeve only to find it caked with rapidly coagulating blood, mostly his own, he thought.

The oldest and the youngest of their number, one comfortably on his way to his hard won twilight years, to playing with his grandchildren and napping in the sun. The other with so much potential, bright eyed and enthusiastic, just like Kellan had been. "It easily could have been me...a few years ago...this would have been me" he thought to himself as he turned to his mentor with an exhausted, knowing expression. "How many friends and neighbors has he lost over the years?" He wondered "How many nightmares kept from his family? how many graves dug for friend and foe?"

Embracing Alergast and giving him few pats in the shoulder, he looked around him now, noted the survivors, Kerr and Liseth trying to find a little comfort, Cato and Pisca looking pensive. He decided to join Brodert's impromptu history lesson, listening from the periphery as he explained the story.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kerr Mollin was exhausted.  He had never had an evening, or a week, or even a month where he had seen so many hurt, terrified, and panicked people.  When the goblins had attacked he and Father Zantus had worked almost as one to get as many people as possible into the cathedral, not a few of whom had sustained cuts or other injuries from the goblins rampaging among them.  For a while he had been unable to think of anything but calming and healing those people.

Once he had realized Liseth was not among those safely in the cathedral, though, he had been worried sick about her.  While he had been incredibly proud when Katrine Vinder walked in, singing Liseth’s praises and telling all who would listen how the young acolyte had saved her life, her news that Liseth had gone with others to fend off further attackers had made him sick with anxiety.  He had quickly walked outside to see her disappear to the north.  He had never prayed so hard to Desna for anyone’s safety as he did for Liseth's right at that moment.

Now she was in his arms, holding him close, telling him how she had saved Kellan Storval and the excitable gnomish girl from certain death.  He held her tighter as she recounted her tale of bravery and heroism, but when she apologized for worrying him, he reluctantly pulled back, took her by the shoulders, and looked deep into her eyes.

“Liseth, you never have to apologize to me for following your heart.  You are meant to heal and help people.  Anyone can see it.  You can’t stand idly by while others put themselves in harm’s way if you are able to help.  Your heart is too big and too generous and too open for that.  It’s one of the reasons I love . . .”  At this Kerr suddenly realized what he was saying, flushed a deep crimson, and looked down at his feet.  “Um, I, uh . . .”

Kerr was saved from his mortified embarrassment when none other than Ameiko Kaijitsu herself joined the small group.  “If you don’t mind my interruption, I just had to come by and say how amazing you all were during the attack,” she said, indicating Cato, Pisca, Kellan, Liseth, and Alergast with a sweep of her arm.  “I’ve done some heroing in my day, but nothing on this scale.  Alergast, you were a BEAST at the Undercliff Bridge.  An absolute beast!  And the way you four defended the cathedral, then saved Aldern Foxglove himself?  Stuff of legends, my friends.  Stuff.  Of.  Legends.  Let me tell you now, Sir Foxglove is going out of his way to ensure that you be treated like the heroes you are.”  She gave Liseth a saucy wink.

“Why don't you all come by the Rusty Dragon tonight, especially if you don't have a place to stay.  All five of you get free room and board for the next week.”  She sighed.  “Yes, I know you have a house Alergast, but maybe you and the missus can sneak off for a night.” She gave him an impudent grin.  “I look forward to seeing you all down there!”

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

The problem with crowds was that there were always so many interesting things going on in them.  There were just so many avenues presented to a gnome in a crowd.  So many different things to follow.  So many potential moments of note to become involved with.  So many different emotions to feel.

Pisca took a step in the direction of Liseth and young Kerr Mollin.  She was just about to take a second step, which was to be combined with a hearty congratulations on their blossoming romance, when she heard her name spoken by the voice of Ameiko Kaijitsu.

"I don't have a place to say," Pisca said unnecessarily and raised her hand.  "I would like a free room," she said next and, once again unnecessarily, raised her hand a little higher.

Then, switching subjects according to some set of unfathomable dynamics that churned away within the gnome's brain, Pisca dug an elbow into the thighs of both Kellan Storval and Cato Crispin and she said, "See.  I told you she had a boyfriend."  Which, of course, she had not.

Cato nodded at Brodert.  "Shalelu Andosana.  I'll have to keep a lookout for her.  Maybe she'll hear about what happened here today and come back early to investigate.  Or maybe we could even find her.  Does anyone know where she patrols out in the hinterlands?  In any case, you've been as helpful as ever, Brodert."

Cato gave the old sage a pat on the back, which unconsciously turned into a half-hug.  The young wizard was still happy Brodert had escaped unscathed.

His ears perked up at Ameiko's offer.  "Well that's something, anyway.  I bet if Shalelu's going to turn up anywhere, it'll be at the Rusty Dragon.  May as well take advantage of that while we look for her."  He turned to look at the gnome and smirked.  "Maybe you can fill me in on everything else you think you've already told me, particularly about the goblin tribes.  I'm very interested in WHY this happened.  Why would someone send at least three separate goblin tribes against Sandpoint today?"

Kellan glanced to his feet at Ameiko's praise despite himself. If she had her way the defense of Sanpoint would be as long and epic as a  Linnorm saga come mid night, she did love to talk and certainly had a flare for the dramatic.

"The Rusty Dragon tonight, the Fox Glove estate tomorrow, we will be fat as toads if this keeps up"

He gave the former adventurer a weary smile and a nod "That's quite the kindness Ameiko, thank you"

Then to Cato and Pisca "I imagine Shalelu would know the most about the workings of the tribes...not that you don't of course" he added to Pisca "Goblins are just her speciality...and she has spent a good amount of time in the region"

Moving to take the weapons back from Alergast, he gave the blade a once over looking for chips, burrs or fractures as he spoke to his mentor.

"I can have these cleaned up by morning, provided that the Sheriff see's fit to send us home...not sure if he is going to want extra patrols tonight or...well I suppose we will see" he was rambling a little to distract himself from the emotion of the day "I can't tell you how glad I was when I saw that you and yours were ok...It's a good thing the Cathedral is finished, I have cause for no small amount of prayer"

"Yes, and I just got here a few weeks ago," the gnome said, adding to Kellan Storval's list of reasons why Shalelu just happened to know more than Pisca at the moment.

"I'm interested in why someone would send three or more goblin tribes at Sandpoint too, Cato.  Well, less about why than about how.  That can't be very easy."

"As to why?  Well, why is probably as related to when as much as it is to where.  I mean, today is the festival right?  That means a lot of people all gathered in one place.  People coming into town from the farms.  No one out there to see the waves of little badger butts sneaking in.  Probably less patrolling of the roads into town too and more guards actually in town.  Isn't that right, Kellan?"

"Why might have something to do with the new Cathedral too.  Today's the day your christening it, right?  Or is that just for ships?  Religious intolerance rears its ugly head.  Or maybe they just hate the fact that you're all so happy and together.  Call it a generalized we-ness envy."

"Hmm.  I should wander down to the Feedbag.  It's ... "  The gnome pointed a finger straight forward then began turning in a circle until she faced south.  "It's that way."

"I think I'll stop in and see how Lunk fared as well.  I'll see you at the Rusty Dragon this evening," she said waving a small pink hand behind her.

Liseth either missed the significance of Kerr's slip of the tongue or chose not to acknowledge it at the moment to save him any extra embarrassment.  Either way, she didn't respond or react until Ameiko Kaijitsu stepped forward to give her own praises to the group, interrupting the young man's stammering.

She frowned slightly when Ms Kaijitsu mentioned Mr Foxglove and then winked at her.  Liseth had forgotten about the nobleman for the moment, and his actions towards her.  With a glance up at Kerr, she began to think that maybe she could get him to come to this dinner with Mr Foxglove, just keep the nobleman from...maybe asking her something that she didn't want him to ask.

"That's very kind of you Ms Kaijitsu.  I've never stayed in a place like the Rusty Dragon before," Liseth responded to the older woman's offer.  "I don't think that I was all that amazing like you said though.  I mean, Mr Storval and Ms Freemish and Mr Crispin, they did all of the fighting."

Liseth thought for a moment, "I suppose that Father Zantus wouldn't mind if I stayed somewhere other than the Acolyte quarters for a few days though."  Then she follows up quickly, "I mean, if you really want to let me stay at your fancy inn."  With a look back at Kerr, then the Cathedral, the girl finished, "But I think that they'll need me here for a while before I can go there.  There must be an awful lot of cleaning up to do."

OOC: Liseth will only show up at the Rusty Dragon if Father Zantus specifically tells her to go and leave the cleaning for later.  If not, she'll probably wind up collapsing in the Acolyte Quarters after helping the priest in any way that she can.

Abstalar Zantus was absolutely exhausted.  He had been up before the crack of dawn preparing for both the Swallowtail Festival and the cathedral's consecration; now he had just concluded a Ceremony for the Dead he could never have anticipated.  The goblin attack on Sandpoint had been as draining as it was unexpected; he had expended almost all of his divinely-gifted energy on healing and still had some patients, currently sleeping on beds in his now-packed infirmary.

Father Zantus looked up as the cathedral doors opened, in walked young Kerr and Liseth.  The priest smiled; both of them had done incredible work today, and been a true credit to the church.  The townspeople were talking about their efforts and heroism in the same breath as they did that of Alergast Barett, Kellan Storval, that gnomish girl and Sage Quink's gifted assistant.

The older man did not even let the younger two open their mouths.  "Out!" He said, with a gentle smile.  "You two have done far more than enough for today.  Hannah and Willow have volunteered their services in the infirmary this evening.  So we will all be relaxing this evening and getting a good night's sleep!"  He looked at the two with mock sternness.  "So go out, get something to eat, and try to unwind a little bit.  There will be more than enough work for all of us in the coming days."  With that, Father Zantus gave them a blessing, then made a shooing gesture at the door.
