Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

The gnome frowned under the shady brim of her hat.  "You killed my goblin thrall," she pouted.  But then her look hardened as a thump and the feathered shaft that sprouted in guardsman Kellan brought the gnome's attention to the Warchanter and the bow in its hand.  Quick as a wink she nocked her own shaft and buried it deep in the Warchanter's chest.

"Come on Ogre Stomp," she said to the human as she advanced toward the flank of the regrouping goblins.  "lets put these cathedral burners down."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Having skewered Hergle to the Cathedral square, Kellan placed a dusty boot on the goblins mostly limp body to pry loose his pole axe. Catching just the barest movement in his peripheral vision he glanced up and turned his body as the arrow punched through the Chainmail at his left bicep with a loud metallic pop.

"GAH!" He grimaced and instinctively clutched at the arrow embedded in the wound, shaking his head fiercely as if to fend off the pain. Pisca's suggestion seemed to bring him back to focus."Alright! ...Forward!" He began as kind of a jog towards the three goblins then broke into a charge as he leveled his weapon, aiming towards the goblin Warchanter.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"No..." whimpered Liseth as the goblin chanter drew back and fired an arrow to wound Kellan yet again; the concentration she had on her invocation failed as a splash of water fell harmlessly to the ground.  Instinctively she found herself grabbing Cato and ducking behind him, away from the path of the arrow; followed by sheepishly whispering, "I'm sorry," to the mage.

She took a step towards Kellan, hoping to heal his new injury, but stopped herself when he charged ahead towards the goblins.  Liseth shouted after him, "Mr Storval, you're hurt!"  She needed to help him but he was too fast, and those goblins were over there too...

Suddenly she remembered when Father Garrick had taught her how to release divine energy in a broad burst that can help many people at once, and even those who weren't nearby.  It should even heal Ms Vinder too, maybe even wake her up.  But, and Liseth shuddered at the thought, it might heal some of the goblins nearby as well.  She hated herself for it, but Liseth looked around quickly to mark the locations of each fallen goblin and specifically exclude them from the healing energies that she was about to release.

Then she closed her eyes and spoke in a strong, calm voice, "[Language unknown: "Fisan Somderess!  Dinineset Plceet!  Tr ingri usngto tinto resss her miwadi!"] before a wave of pure white energy burst forth from Liseth's body.

10:56, Today: Liseth Thoradin rolled 7 using 1d6+1. Channel Energy Healing amount.

That should heal both Kellan and Katrine Vinder for 7 points of damage.  I don't think that anyone else is injured though.  Liseth is specifically excluding up to 4 fallen goblins from the effect.

Also, the duration on my Bless spell was only 1 minute.  It probably wore off during the interlude between battles.  Though I suppose that in the end it's up to Racon how much time has really passed.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato winced when the warchanter's arrow struck Kellan. That certainly hadn't been part of the plan. Maybe he could take out the injured warchanter and start to even the odds. As before, Cato flung out his arm and a drop of acid sped towards the goblin.

OOC:

13:27, Today: Cato Crispin rolled 4 using 1d20+2. Crit confirmation .
13:26, Today: Cato Crispin rolled 22 using 1d20+2. Ranged touch for acid dart.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

The Warchanter glared at Pisca as the gnome drew her bow and fired.  The goblin's horrific song faltered slightly as she unsuccessfully attempted to dodge the arrow, which buried itself in her shoulder.  She screeched in pain and reached for a bag at her waist, but before she could do so was suddenly hit by Cato's burst of acid.

The Warchanter screamed in agony, song forgotten, as her two goblin henchmen stared in horror.  She then crumpled to the ground, unconscious.

The two remaining goblins looked at their fallen Warchanter, looked at their opponents, then looked at each other.  Coming to an unspoken agreement, they immediately took off running for the Northern Gate as fast as they could, predations forgotten.

OOC:  You JUST got her.  Which is good for you guys, because if she's had both of her goblins available to attack she might have done some serious damage.  You now have a couple of rounds to recover, discuss what's going on, etc.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"They're getting away!"  The gnome barreled down the street after the two fleeing goblins.  Then ...  She skidded to a quick stop.

"Oh yeah.  Them running away was what we wanted."

"Never seen a warchanter up close," she said, returning to kneel by the body.  Pisca turned the goblin's face from first one side to the other, examining the facial painting.  "Wonder what Big Gugmut would have to say about your performance here today, huh?  Big Gugmut ... "  The gnome's violet eyes stared off into the middle distance, but only for a moment.

"Nice shot, by the way, Cato.  We make a great team.  We all make a great team.  Yes siree bob.  Whatever that means," she said and returned to her examination of the body.  "Hmm," she hummed.  And, "Huh?" she huh'ed.  Then, "I wonder what you have on you.  Ooo.  Arrows.  Thank you."

"So?  Where were we?"  The big hat and fringed leather jacket spoke over her shoulder to the three humans as she rifled through the possessions of the goblin warchanter.  "Oh.  Right.  Make sure that the people at the Cathedral are alright and that they're warned that there could be a major attack against them.  Which may have been what we just averted.  If they seem alright, we run as fast as we can to Undercliff Way bridge or the center of town to help out in one of those places.  That was it, wasn't it?"

"Who's for the gnome's suggestion?" she called out and raised one hand while the other continued to pat down the cooling goblin corpse.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan was mid-charge when the missiles struck home, watching at the Warchanter collapsed in the street. Turning to vent his pain at the remaining two, he quickly found himself out paced by the faster Goblins.

"Yeah, run you cowards!" He called out as he brandished his pole axe above his head, watching them flee.

Once again a little short on breath, he turned see Pisca rifling the Warchanters corpse and nodded in agreement with her appraisal.

"Yeah, that worked well, we worked well...would hate to think of what could have happened had we not been here" looking over the pristine walls of the newly constructed cathedral as re replied.

"It sounds like a plan, let's check inside then, if all is well, be on our way. I should report in at the Garrison" he added half to himself, making his way towards the cathedral steps.

"Thank you again by the way" he smiled towards Liseth, plucking the dangling arrow from his punctured chainmail.

Cato nodded in agreement.  "Yes, we seem to do quite well together.  Interesting how quickly these goblins fled when they encountered resistance.  I suppose they weren't expecting to find anything but screaming townspeople, but I wonder why they would have staged an attack in the first place.  Pisca, your intuition regarding these goblins has been pretty good so far.  Let's go check to make sure those in the cathedral are okay, then check the rest of town."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

As Pisca searches the Warchanter, she finds a potion, a shortbow, 19 arrows, 20 gold pieces, some rather worse-for-wear studded leather armor sized for a small humanoid, and a dogslicer.  A whip lies on the ground nearby.

OOC:  To identify a potion, all you have to do is take a sip.  Of course, if it's a poison . . .

Liseth seemed to relax, if only slightly, when the goblins fled.  Immediately she went to check on Ms. Vinder, setting down on her knees next to her, to see if the healing energy had helped her.  Liseth gently shook the unconscious woman, "Ms Vinder, are you okay?"

She nodded silently at everyone's suggestion to go and check on the Cathedral right away, but quickly became flustered when people started to move without her.  "Wait!  We can't leave Ms Vinder here!  What if a goblin finds her?"  Liseth tried to pick her up and quickly becomes red-faced with the exertion, nearly dropping Ms Vinder to the ground as she falls to her rear.  "I can't carry her all by myself..."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Things in Sandpoint have calmed somewhat.  Here and there the sounds of battle, clanging swords, calls for support from the Sandpoint Guard, and shrieking or singing goblins echo through the streets, but the area near the cathedral seems quiet.  The citizens have fled for the cathedral, their homes, or points elsewhere in town.  Many goblins are dead, their bodies lying alongside those of a couple of unfortunate Sandpoint citizens.

Katrine Vinder coughed and raised herself up on one elbow as Liseth knelt next to her.  “Yes.”  She replied.  “Yes, I’m okay.  Thanks to you!”  She gave Liseth a look filled with so much gratitude that it might almost be considered embarrassing.  “I think you saved my life!  Aren’t you Father Zantus’ new acolyte?  I’m going to tell him exactly what you did for me and how you saved me.  In fact, I’m going to tell everyone!”

Katrine gave Liseth a smile as she made her way to her feet, then clasped her hand.  “I’ll especially tell Kerr,” she said, giving the young blonde a broad wink.

“I think I can make my way to the cathedral.  I saw Father Zantus and Kerr herding people in there when the attack started.”  She looked around at the dead goblins with the dawning realization that the four standing in front of her had played a major part in their deaths.  “I should be safe; it looks like there aren’t any of them left here.”

Indeed.  But while the fight has clearly moved on from the cathedral, you can still smell smoke coming from the north.  And in the relative quiet, you now hear the sound of frightened yells and frantic barking coming from the direction of the Northern Gate.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato had just caught his breath after the second brief combat had ended.  He looked around at his companions, who seemed to be in good shape.  Even Kellan, who had borne the brunt of the goblins' attention.

When Liseth bent to help Ven, Cato felt ashamed.  He had been so caught up in the excitement of the goblins that he forgot about the people of Sandpoint.  Luckily, the woman seemed to be okay.  He was relieved that the new cathedral seemed to be safe from the danger a fire as well.

Then he heard the sounds from the north end of town.  Likely another brief melee against the goblins as well.  "Sounds like someone else could use our help.  Kellan, my ward on you will only last for a minute, and I'm almost out of spells.  I'll do what I can to help.  Hopefully this will be the last group of the goblins attacking Sandpoint.  Unless you know where I could find a crossbow quickly?"

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"Ooglie oo."  With the fringed leather jacked draped about her, the gnome squatted amidst the possessions of the ex-goblin-warchanter.  In her hands she turned the potion vial, swooping it through the air as though it were a long tubular bird and that this act might, in some incomprehensible fashion, tell her something about it.  "Hmph," she hmph'ed.  "Going to have to do this the hard way."  Pisca uncorked the vial and took a cautious sniff.  She wrinkled her nose on the off hand chance that the concoction was nasty but her nose somehow missed that message.  Then she dipped her little finger into the top of the vial and came out the tiniest drop that clung upside down from the tip.  The gnome tipped back her head and opened wide, then *glomp*, she chomped down on her own finger and sucked it dry.

"Hmm," she hmm'ed, swirling the tiny drop around in her mouth.  "Tastes like chicken."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan moved over and helped Ms. Binder to her feet at Liseths urging. Once the woman was up Kellan felt watched the exchange between Liseth and the rescued woman with a warm heart.

"One down, how many to go?" he wondered to himself, his stomach still clenched at the thought of all those that he had known and loved at risk here, fates unknown.

As Liseth received her praise and Pisca sampled her goblin draught, Kellan turned to Cato to discuss the plan of action.

"The Garrison has a compliment of crossbows, but it's about 200 yards to the south west." Gesturing in that direction with one hand "It sounds like the battle is currently to the north. I would gladly lend you my key if you wish to try to retrieve one...but I would probably do the most good heading directly to the front." He fished out a large, well worn brass key from a fine chain at his waist in the case Cato decided on the former.

Remembering that his friend Alergast was stationed nearby to the east along the Undercliff Bridge, Kellan inwardly wished to join his commanding officer as soon as possible.

OOC: Assuming that the garrison stocks these, and that Kellan would has access given his profession, can certainly alter the post should you say otherwise Racon. From the map it kind of looks like one would be able to see along Undercliff from the south side of the Cathedral plateau?

Cato winced as Pisca sampled the potion.  "Next time, we might try some spells to identify potions without sampling it before we run into a fight."

Cato shook his head at Kellan's offer.  "It's probably better to help with what we have rather than show up well-prepared for a battle that's long since ended."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Liseth was filled with relief when Ms Vinder spoke to say that she was okay and then stood up.  But when the other lady began gushing her thanks she couldn't stop herself from blushing; which only intensified when Ms Vinder winked and mentioned telling Kerr all about it.  The diminutive girl bashfully looked away, "You don't have to do all of that Ms Vinder.  I'm just happy that you're okay..."

Then Liseth realized that she could still hear yelling and smell smoke coming from the direction of the Northern Gate.  She suddenly frowned, saddened by the fact that the fighting was not yet over, "Ms Vinder, you should hurry to the Cathedral.  It doesn't sound like its safe out here yet.  And you can tell Father Zantus and Kerr that we're okay."  Liseth rubbed her hands together in obvious reluctance, but stated with determination, "I can't go to the Cathedral yet.  There are still people out here that are hurt, and I need to help them."

Picking her way through the square, Liseth searched for anyone that looked injured but can still be saved; issuing a small prayer to stabilize their wounds whether they be man, woman, animal, or goblin.  Though she was careful to not wander more than thirty feet from Kellan and Cato in case another group of hostile goblins showed up.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"*Khgk*"

The gnome rose from her crouch with one hand at her throat and the other, holding the potion, outstretched as though grasping for support.  She took a step and staggered.  "*Khgk*Khgk*" she choked.

"Just kidding.  This is a minor healing draught."  Pisca's stance straightened and she sealed the vial back up by pounding the cork back down in the mouth.  "Why don't you take this, Lys?" she said, offering the potion.  "Or give it on to whoever you think can best use it."

Pisca herself pocketed the twenty gold pieces and spilled the arrows into her quiver.  The rest, whip and dogslicer, she rolled into the armor and placed it at the side of the road with the words, 'Pisca's Stuff' written on the outside in chalk.

"You know, I heard fighting from the Undercliff Way bridge too," interjects the gnome as the others propose going north.  That's pretty close to the Cathedral too.  Any gobbies who came from the bridge could climb over the wall and come across the Boneyard.  Come at the Cathedral from the rear."

She turned to the east where she knew the bridge to lie.  She had heard sounds of fighting.  Fighting meant defenders already there.

"Lets run around to the north corner of the Cathedral," Pisca the Now Somewhat Less Sure Than She Was a Moment Ago Gnome proposed.  "From there we should be able to see what's going on at the North Gate.  We can also look in the front door of the Cathedral as we go by.  Once we see what's going on up north, we can decide then."

"Alright?" asked the gnome.  As she was waiting for an answer, Pisca turned her head first one way and then another, listening again for a change in the sounds of fighting that came drifting in from down the streets and over the rooftops.

"North!"  With a hand on her head to hold the hat down, Pisca tipped her face up to the others and the alarm that showed was plain.  "The sounds of fighting in the rest of the city have died down.  In most cases completely stopped.  But the barking and shouting from the north is worse."

"Lets go."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Katrine gives Liseth a hug, the rest of the party a grateful wave, and heads toward the cathedral.  As you hurry north through the square, you see the cathedral door open and Katrine go inside.  As you move onto Church Street, you can see the figure of what looks to be a young man staring after you from the cathedral steps.

You race up Church Street as fast as you can, given the presence of Liseth and Pisca, following the sounds of combat.  As you round the corner of The White Deer (perhaps Sandpoint's most well-appointed inn), you find the source of both the flames and the ruckus.

A goblin mounted on a goblin dog has attacked a noble and his hunting dog, who were apparently attempting to stop the goblins from lighting the northern part of the city on fire.  The noble cowers behind a rain barrel, calling for help, while his dog fights the mounted goblin.  You arrive on the scene just in time to see the mounted goblin kill the dog with his blade.  As the dog crashes dying to the ground, the mounted goblin's kin, who were cowering behind some debris in fear of the dog, throw up a cheer and begin to emerge from hiding.

The goblins are distracted by their kill and the cowering noble.  As they turn their attention to their new prey, you see the opportunity to attack with surprise.

Please roll initiative, but regardless of your roll post a combat action as you have a surprise round in which the goblins cannot act and will be considered flat-footed.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Liseth stifled a cry when the mounted goblin struck down the poor dog.  But then she saw the man who was also up there and all of those goblins getting ready to mob him.  She shouted out to him as loud as she could, "Hurry!  Run this way!"

Then seeing that a messy fight was unavoidable now, she grabbed hold of her focus and said a prayer, "Sarenrae, suffuse us with your holy light that we might gain the courage to protect the innocent from implacable wickedness."

Cato whispered to the group.  "My last spell can summon a minor celestial animal to help us, but it won't last for very long, and I have to be fairly close.  I suggest concentrating our attacks on the closest goblins, then I'll summon help next round to aid Kellan in close combat while we continue to support him from afar.  That seems to have worked fairly well so far."

Moving quickly, Cato advanced around the side of The White Deer and up the road, praying the goblins wouldn't notice him as he got closer.

As his compatriots got in position, Cato cast his spell he pulled a small candle from his pouch and concentrated on it. "Accio," he said quietly. In a louder voice, "Hey!  Goblins!  Why don't you try picking on this dog?"

"Closest gobbie?  Alright?"  The gnome had already moved out, headed off the road and in the direction of what, by the purest coincidence, happened to be the closest goblin.  With the human mage behind her, she rushes up the last few steps to get within range and looses an shaft at it very near the same time as the human sends another dart of acid its way.

"It's a good day to die," quips the gnome.  "Well, for you to die.  Not me."

"Sounds good, I'll hold the line for as long as I can"

Shuffling into position to the sound of jingling mail, he posts himself near a pile of flaming debris, Pole axe leveled threateningly towards the gobkin ranks.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Gok cowered behind some debris as he watched Gorzin duel the longshanks' hated dog.  Gok, along with Azgut and Trub, had been happily burning the northern part of the town when the longshanks had burst from the big building with his ferocious dog in an attempt to drive them off.  And he would have succeeded, too, if Gorzin hadn't arrived to deal with the pernicious pooch.  Like all goblins, Gok detested dogs.  They frightened him deeply.

Gok stood to cheer along with his fellows as Gorzin buried his horsechopper into the dog's neck, earning a attenuated yelp and gifting the dog with a quick death.  Now that the dog was taken care of, all that was left was dealing with the cowering longshanks, who didn't look like he would be much of a . . .

An arrow sprouted in Gok's shoulder.  He stared at it dumbly, then realized he must be under attack.  As he looked around for the source of the arrow, he saw a longshanks waving his arms in the air.  Stupid longshanks.

Suddenly a DOG appeared RIGHT UNDER GOK'S NOSE.  Gok screamed in fear, immediately forgetting the pain in his shoulder and bringing his dogslicer down in an arc mirroring the one employed by Gorzin just seconds earlier.  While it earned Gok the same sort of yelp, this blow did not kill the dog, who snarled his anger.  Just as Gok was ready to run for his life, his friend Azgut ran up and finished the dog with his aptly-named dogslicer while it was preoccupied with Gok.  Gok and Azgut grinned at each other.  Dead dogs were good dogs.

Gok wondered where Trub was.  Probably hiding in the debris.  Trub was a good hider.

Gok saw an armored longshanks approaching, along with the smaller bow-armed person who had apparently shot him.  Gok growled, then smiled as he saw an arrow nearly bury itself in the short woman's throat, although she managed to escape with just a nick.  Gorzin is on the prowl, Gok thought.  These longshanks would have their hands full with him.

OOC:
Gok (Goblin 3) attacks Cato's summoned celestial dog and hits for 4 damage
Azgut (Goblin 2) moves to 016 and attacks Cato's summoned celestial dog with flanking bonus, hitting for four damage, killing it.
Trub (Goblin 1) moves into the debris at 013.

Gorzin (Mounted Goblin) moves to V14, shooting his shortbow at Pisca, hitting but failing to confirm his critical, doing two points of damage to her.

Remember that if you shoot at or otherwise attack the mounted goblin you need to specify whether you are targeting the goblin himself or his mount.

Combat actions, please.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan marched forward, watching in muted disappointment as the summoned animal was cut down before him. He had hoped to find other guardsman here, Dacen, Alergast, somebody. Steeling himself he continued towards the little beady eyed monsters, reminding himself that this newly founded group of four may very well be all that remained of the towns defenders.

Trying to keep the other goblins in his peripheral, he began menacing the nearest goblin as he advanced, attempting a few thrusts in it's direction and occasionally sparing a glance towards the man behind the barrel.
