Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Reluctant to be left exposed, Liseth carefully crept closer to the marauding goblins; looking towards the burning debris while she stepped next to Cato.  She knew that she couldn't just let it burn uncontrolled; she had to at least try to do something.  The house across from her was too far away for her to try to summon water on it, but there was that burning mass closer to her.

She saw that the goblins were distracted by the magical dog that Cato summoned, so Liseth took a final step out from behind the mage while whispering a prayer, "Send a deluge to douse...Eep!"  Her incantation is cut off short when, out of the corner of her eye, Liseth caught sight of Pisca being struck by an arrow.  Eyes widened in horror when the gnome was struck with what to Liseth looked like it would be a lethal shot, even though the hardy gnome didn't fall.

Her prayer for water was left unfinished and forgotten now that Liseth's attention changed to trying to reason how best to help Pisca; but it seemed the gods managed to interpret her intent easily enough.  Now forgotten, a bucket's worth of water condensed above the flames and splashed down onto them.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato looked on in dismay as the goblins made short work of his summoned dog.  At least the goblins had been distracted, and now made a fine target for Pisca and him.

Cato fired off another acid dart at the goblin, hoping the acid and arrow combined would finish off the goblin.

OOC:

08:52, Today: Cato Crispin rolled 16 using 1d20+3. Ranged Melee Touch.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

"Ow," said the gnome with an icy calm that belied the close brush she had just had with death.  She put a hand up as if to staunch the flow of blood.

"That."

"Hurt."

Wait.  One, two, plus the Dog Rider.  Weren't there ... three?

"Eyes up," called out Frontier Scout Pisca in her Better Pay Heed to the Gnome voice.  "We have a sneaky little critter out there."  Her eyes scanned the mound of debris where she had seen the gobbie only moments before.

"Hmmm," Pisca's eyes searched the terrain.  And then, "Hmmm," again some more.  The gnome snapped off a quick shot at the little green badger bugger she'd hit before with a sharp sssssshhhk that ended in a satisfying thut.  Then she returned to more hmmm style searching.

"Hmmm."  Pisca darted quickly behind Kellan Ogre Stomp.

"Hmmm."  She peered out from around the human's legs to stick her tongue out at the nearby gobbie.

"Hmmm.  Where could that little evil ernie be?"

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Gorzin surveyed the situation with all the cunning and insight he possessed.  These new arrivals looked dangerous; as usual it was up to him to save the day.  He was surprised the footgoblins had summoned the courage to fight off that magic dog; he had thought they would have run for the hills at its first bark.

As Gorzin saw Gok go down in a hail of acid and arrows, then Trub impaled on a poleaxe during his attempt to close with the armored guardsman, he figured he needed to even the odds.  Spotting a small longshanks who seemed to be with the attacking group, Gorzin figured he would move in, kill her, and then deal with the other three piecemeal while Azgut kept them busy.

Gorzin snickered as Azgut jumped forward and took an almost-comical swing at the armored human, nearly spinning himself around.  Gorzin imagined Azgut wouldn't last long.  But hopefully it would be just long enough.

Gorzin spurred Nif, his goblin dog, forward, riding between the flaming debris and closing with the shocked-looking woman, only slightly distracted by the appearance from water out of nowhere that partially doused the flames.  Gorzin gave an evil smile.  It looked like he'd chosen well; she seemed to be the herd's weakest.  He swung his horsechopper at the yellow-haired longshanks but managed only a glancing blow, causing her to stumble backwards and, in the process, barely avoid Nif's razor-sharp teeth.  Gorzin snarled as he pressed the attack; this woman needed to die.

OOC:

Gok (Goblin 3) is, sadly, dead.  RIP Gok.
Azgut (Goblin 2) takes a five-foot step to N17, attacking Kellan, but missing.
Trub (Goblin 1) bursts out of the debris, moving to L15 to attack Kellan, but as he moves is cut down by Kellan's attack of opportunity in space M14.  RIP Trub.

Gorzin (Mounted Goblin) moves to L22, where both he and his goblin dog attack Liseth.  Gorzin hits Liseth for two points of damage, while the goblin dog misses entirely.

That could have gone a LOT worse for our favorite Oracle.  Clearly she is favored by the divine!  :)

Remember that if you shoot at or otherwise attack the mounted goblin you need to specify whether you are targeting the goblin himself or his mount.

Combat actions, please.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan braced himself as the Goblin burst forth from the rubble, impaling the creature through the rib cage as it charged him. Dislodging his pole axe with a twist of the haft he swung the weapon around to attempt to hit the other attacker but was too slow, the two locking together in combat, dog slicer and pole arm coming together with a resounding impact.

Out of his peripheral he caught sight of the mounted Goblin bearing down on the frail looking Oracle, heedless of the goblin in front of him, he gave out a grunt, shoving the goblin away as he turned towards the scene unfolding behind him.

"Liseth!" he screamed roughly as he charged, the name becoming a battle cry as he closed on the mounted Goblin, teeth bared he drove the spike of the pole axe towards the flank of the goblin dog, hoping to dislodge the rider.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Liseth only barely had time to register the charge towards her of the goblin mounted on his hideous monster dog.  She gasped in startlement when he came straight for her, thinking for a moment why he would choose to attack her; a thought that was immediately cut short when she did her best to stumble backwards and get away from his slicing blade and biting mount, all the while shrieking in terror and pain from the thankfully glancing yet most severe injury she had ever received.

With shaky hands and voice, the diminutive oracle grabbed her focus to beseech a blessing of protection before the goblin could press his attack and doubtlessly kill her, "Sarenrae, this humble servant begs your divine protection..."  Then she tightly closed her eyes to shut out the menacing visage and snarling monster before her; vaguely hearing someone shout her name as she clutched her divine focus with all of her might.  The small girl knew quite well that if the gods did not see fit to protect her then there was little else that she could do.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

It's surprising really.  How excitable hummies can be.  Especially young ones.  Especially when you get males and females together.  Field Scholar Pisca takes in the whole thing with just the proper amount of clinical detachment.

The big hat with the fringed jacket tracked across the field and back onto the road even as Kellan Ogre Stomp gave the fetid goblin dog a real good poking.  She smiled up at the young mage as she went by, then planted her feet and fired another arrow.  This one flew past Liseth's hip and dug itself into the goblin dog with a thunk as meaty as each of its predecessors.

"Down, doggie," the gnome said to no one in particular.  "Doggie down."

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato yelled in surprise when the goblin and his goblin dog charged up and attacked Liseth.  She seemed to be more surprised than truly hurt, but it was obvious the young woman was not used to combat and could be in serious danger.  Taking down the goblin was probably the best course of action; the dog would probably flee if that was done.  Along with, possibly, the last remaining goblin as foot as well.  Killing the warchanter earlier had accomplished much the same thing.  Taking a second to gain an opening, Cato flung another acid dart at the aggressive goblin.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Gorzin was getting annoyed.  There was no way the blonde longshanks should still be alive after he and Nif attacked her, but there she was, stumbling backwards and grabbing her necklace.  He started to nudge Nif after her, to finish her off . . .

Suddenly Gorzin had bigger problems, as the armored guardsman appeared and would have impaled poor Nif if it hadn't been for a bit of Nif-ty (haha!) dogriding; he yanked Nif's head around and just barely got his mount away from where the guardsman's deadly poleaxe almost surely would have killed it.

Apparently Azgut had failed to keep the guardsman's attention, curse him.  Azgut apparently knew he was in trouble; he chased the armored man all the way back, hacking ineffectively.  The guardsman swung his poleaxe around to fend off Azgut, but once again poleaxe met dogslicer and neither combatant could gain the upper hand.

Gozrin wheeled Nif around; the short woman wasn't the threat, this armored longshanks was.  But no sooner had he done this than Nif let out a yelp . . . an arrow had hit him in the rear.  As Gozrin spurred Nif forward, he himself was covered in some sort of burning substance that elicited a yell of pain and rage.

Gozrin needed to reduce the odds, and he needed to do it now.  He swung at the off-balance guardsman and hit him with a glancing blow, but one that put him right in the path of Nif's sharp teeth.  Nif got in one of his best bites of the day, savaging the guardsman's arm and shoulder, growling as he tasted blood.  Nif grinned;  the guardsman wasn't down, but he was in big trouble.

OOC:

Azgut misses his AoO on Kellan.

Azgut (Goblin 2) moves 10' to M19, provoking an attack of opportunity from Kellan, who misses.

Azgut attacks Kellan and misses.

Gorzin (Mounted Goblin) makes a Mounted Combat check to negate Kellan's attack on Nif.  Gorzin and Nif make a 5-foot step to L21, where they attack Kellan.  Gorzin hits Kellan for 2 damage, Nif hits Kellan for 9 (!!) damage.

Kellan, you need to make a DC 12 Fortitude Save to avoid an allergic reaction to Nif's bite.

Remember that if you shoot at or otherwise attack the mounted goblin you need to specify whether you are targeting the goblin himself or his mount.

Combat actions, please.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

After a moment, when Liseth was suitably satisfied that she was not in fact dead, the young teenaged girl cracked her eyes open to see that the mounted goblin was in fact leaving her alone.  She breathed a sigh of relief, her prayer for sanctuary must have worked.

But to her horror Liseth suddenly saw the entire situation: the goblin hadn't tried to come after her because he and his monster dog were mauling Kellan!  That dog gave him such a savage bite, she didn't even know how the guardsman was still able to stand!  She has to do something quickly, but she knows that the goblin need only turn around and it was her turn to be mauled.

She felt her heartbeat quicken as the fight took such a turn for the worse.  Liseth glanced around quickly for anyplace that might be relatively safe and then stepped between Pisca and Cato.  Finally the girl, hand still on her focus, radiated another pulse of healing light in which to bathe herself and her friends, [Language unknown: "Oreesswit Treces!  Atyin la icaareund iououllesearere vir olosen'heus tomami!"]  This time she found herself much less reluctant to exclude the goblins from her divine energy.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Kellan screamed as his arm was mangled, jerking his hand away and backing up, trying in vain to keep the mounted goblin at bay, an ineffectual attack towards the goblin dogs legs yielded little. Clutching his arm to his chest, blood could be seen oozing from between the links of his armor and pouring out from the cuff of his glove where is trailed on the ground in his wake,

He looked desperate, sweat beading on his brow and his breath coming in gasps, his jaw set against the pain and exhaustion as he fought on.

So many things happening at once.  The light from the human girl went off again, but this time Pisca felt her skin drink it in.  Her body inhaled the light and held its breath.

The Ogre Stomp moved into just the right place.  Just perfect, lining up opposite the gobbie and its dog.

Pisca heard her own voice shout, "Die gobbie!  Die!"  She felt the muscles in her arms draw her bow taught, and with the release there came the familiar hum of a bowstring.

And her skin exhaled with an Aaaahhhh.  Her neck felt better.  For hummie Ogre Stomp?  Even though she was looking right at him, the gnome wasn't sure that she really wanted to look.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato grimaced as Kellan was savaged by the goblin's dog.  "We have to kill that goblin!"  An obvious statement, really, but the midst of combat wasn't the best time for profound, well thought-out statements.  That would come later, assuming there was a later.

Cato hoped this ended soon.  He flung another dart of acid at the goblin riding the dog, but the screaming, light and blood threw off his aim somewhat.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Azgut grinned as the armored human stumbled backward, savaged by Nif's razor-sharp jaws.  He stopped grinning as he saw Gorzin take another arrow hit; he looked around and saw that it was the bow-wielding gnome who was causing so many problems.  Azgut saw that Gorzin was bleeding heavily; there was no way he could take another shot from that bow.  Since it looked as if Gorzin had the armored human well in hand, Azgut moved toward the gnome, dogslicer raised.  He would save Gorzin and maybe become an elite warrior himself!

Unfortunately for Azgut, the guardsman wasn't quite as finished as he seemed; he speared the goblin with his poleaxe as Azgut turned his attention to the other party members, killing him instantly.

Gozrin grunted as Pisca's arrow sliced open his ribcage, causing him to bleed profusely.  Gozrin felt a little light-headed, and wasn't helped by seeing Azgut leave off the attack on the guardsman only to be speared for his troubles.  Gritting his teeth at the stupidity of his footgoblin cohort, Gozrin spurred Nif forward; continuing to press the armored human while he himself drank the treasured healing potion he'd hoped he wouldn't have to use.  The medicinal liquid spread through his veins, closing wounds and refreshing him, readying him for the remainder of the battle.

Nif, frenzied with excitement, just barely missed a killing blow on the armored longshanks.  Of course, thought Gozrin, who tended towards fatalism.  But now, health fully restored, Gozrin readied his horsechopper; he would end this longshanks or die trying.

OOC:

Azgut (Goblin 2) moves 15' to J21, provoking an attack of opportunity from Kellan, who hits him for 9 points of damage, killing him.

Gorzin (Mounted Goblin) and Nif make a 5-foot step to M22, where Nif attacks Kellan and (just barely) misses.  Gorzin drinks a potion of cure moderate wounds, healing all damage.

Remember that if you shoot at or otherwise attack the mounted goblin you need to specify whether you are targeting the goblin himself or his mount.

Combat actions, please.

"Be careful Mr Storval!" Liseth cried when the monster dog raked against his mail armor.  The guardsman was still very hurt, that's easy for anyone to see.  She has never had to use so much divine energy before in such a short amount of time and it was beginning to wear on the girl; but Liseth was going to keep channeling healing energy until she collapsed from the effort.

[Language unknown: "Rivir Hoasno!  Ri her bleatiich!"]  Again a wave of white, healing light pours from the teenage girl, washing over everyone and restoring Kellan to health.  Once again, the wave passes over and avoids the hostile goblins.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

One goblin down, but the goblin riding the dog was now healed up. Okay...what to do?  Cato decided he'd concentrate on the mount instead. Maybe that would buy them a round as the rider extricated himself from his fallen mount. Or, at the very least, it would prevent the vicious dog from attacking Kellan again.

Once more, Cato flung out his hand, and once more a small gob of acid flew towards his foes. Cato tried to aim for one of the vial areas he vaguely remembered reading about in a tome Brodert had once shown him.

Pisca the Infallible Archer drew the fletching of a feathered shaft once again to her ear.  "What's that language you're speaking, Lysa?" she asked, just before releasing the arrow to fly free and make its way toward the goblin dog.

Then, without waiting for either the results of her shot or for an answer from the human girl, Pisca the Gnome of Conquest drew her blade and marched on the goblin menace.  "We know you've come for the Cathedral, Gobbie," the gnome cried, brandishing her blade.  "Your new leader will know you have failed when he sees your head on ...  what is that? ... on a pole!"

"Yeah.  A pole."

Kellan, who had seemed so close to deaths door just a few moments ago, seemed to be back in fighting form. Moving in something of a semi circle he continued to back up and reposition as Gorzin and Nif advanced, getting himself more solidly between the goblin and his new friends,

Spitting a wad of blood as he saw Gorzin down the potion, he took a deep breath and readied his weary body for the long haul. He could practically hear Alergast's admonishment in his head "Breath Kellan, Breath..." He gave a weary smile despite himself at the thought.

He struck out a little more precisely this time, still missing, but it was notable improvement from his earlier more desperate attacks.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Gorzin dodged a stab from the annoying guardsman.  Then, as he began his attack, tragedy struck; acid covered his beloved Nif before an arrow took the goblin dog in the head, killing him.

"NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!"  Gorzin screamed, expertly rolling off his beloved goblin dog as it slumped to the ground.  Gorzin was now in a rage.  He forgot about the armored human and concentrated on the Nif-killing bowgnome.  Vengeance was all he could think about.  He dodged the armored man's clumsy poleaxe thrust and leapt at the gnome, bringing his horsechopper down into her with a satsifying crunch.  That's right, witch, he thought as the gnome grunted in pain.  Die.  Die like Nif.

OOC:

Nif dies to Cato's acid and Pisca's arrow.  No Nif-ty dogriding this time.  RIP Nif.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Cato sighed in relief as the goblin-dog succumbed to arrows and acid.  And that just left them with a crazed goblin hell-bent on vengeance.  It didn't look like Pisca would be able to survive another blow like that.

"Hey ugly!  Want some of what killed your dog?"  Cato flung an acid dart at the goblin, then backed up close to Kellan.  Hopefully, the enraged goblin would charge him and suffer as he ran past Kellan to get at the wizard.  Hopefully.  And hopefully Cato wouldn't end up with a gut full of horsechopper in the meantime.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

When the monstrous dog was brought down, Liseth thought that maybe the battle would have taken a turn in her companions' favor.  But all that it served to do was send the goblin rider into a rage, straight for Pisca!  Liseth cringed at the ferocity of the bloodletting that the little gnome endured; feeling the torn cloth of her own robe and wondering how it was that she was spared such a grievous wound.

Immediately the white-clad girl raised her arms, though her voice began to sound weary as beads of sweat appear on her brow.  [Language unknown: "Astrateve ti io Eauthodin!  Waseul ce et foneutni p ardionsettin mobut manrat'butoer!"]

Self-preservation kicked in when Cato changed positions and Liseth suddenly noticed that there was nothing between her and the enraged goblin.  As quick as her legs would carry her, the girl limped after the mage and got behind him.  Clutching Cato's arm and peering at the goblin from behind him, Liseth pleadingly shouted an offer to the goblin, "Please stop fighting!  I...I might be able to save your dog!"

Might being the key word.  If the arrow were carefully removed and everyone acted quickly...she might be able to save its life.  If only the goblin would agree to stop fighting...

Standard Action: Channel Energy (Excluding the goblins and goblin dog)
Move Action: move 20 feet to L 18

Kellan moved to flank the Goblin as he bore down on Pisca, wincing as he brought his horse chopper down, the results of the attack mercifully hidden from his view by the goblins back. Bringing the hook of his pole axe between the goblins legs he attempted to pry him off her, however in the frenzy of the melee it proved to be more difficult than he thought,

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Well, that was unexpected.  The gobbie actually answered the challenge.  Seeming, actually rather upset.  And so Pisca the Famous Goblin Pacifier woke from her dream of Goblin Pacification to some very serious hurt.  For the briefest of moments, she considered screaming in horror like a girl (albeit a gnomish girl) as the massive horsechopper came down upon her.  In the end, even though she did decided against the shrill (and highly dramatic) scream of terror, a cry of excruciating pain was indeed forced from her lips.

Her breath was coming ragged with pain, and her own blood covered the front of her once stylish Shoanti leathers.  With bow in one hand and rapier in the other Pisca Neep Freemish did the thing any Fearless Goblin Hunting Gnome would do.  She ran away.

Even as the burst of healing light pulled together her terrible wound and restored some of the blood to her body, she was on the move.  She dodged to the side, coming in an arc around to well behind Kellan Ogre Stomp.  Once safely within the protection of the massive hummie polearm the gnome gritted her teeth to staunch the pain and delivered a tremendous wet raspberry at the now-dogless goblin.

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

Gorzin growled as the hated gnome dodged him and managed to get away.  But through the din of battle, he heard the small longshanks make an offer; to bring his beloved Nif back.  Nif!  But could he trust her?  Could he trust them?!?

[OOC: Okay, Liseth, I like your creativity, and it's right in line with your character.  So I've thought about this a LOT this afternoon.  Here's the deal.  I set Gorzin's possibility of hearing your offer at DC 20.  He made his Perception check.  So he heard you.  Now the question is whether he will take you up on it.

Gorzin is outraged at Nif's death.  He's hostile.  (DC 25)  But you're offering something he really, really wants:  Nif back.  He REALLY loves Nif.  But he doesn't know if he can trust you, and he certainly doesn't like you as a group.  But Liseth personally hasn't done anything to him, as far as he can tell.  I've done some reading re: the Diplomacy skill and with all the situational modifiers and bonuses I've determined he will stop fighting if you make that DC 25 Diplomacy check.  With your 10 Diplomacy skill, that means you need a 15.  Or less if you have some way to boost it I haven't considered.

That's my ruling and the rationale behind it.  I didn't want to make this one secret (like most skill checks) because my usual rationale for secret checks doesn't apply (i.e., that the roll itself tells you the player something your character wouldn't know) and I want it to be in your hands as a player.  Make your check!]

Re: Chapter #2:  Encounter at Sandpoint

The gnome braced herself for death her own or the gobbies or somebody's.  People were always dying.  Always.

Then, it occurred to her what was going on here, what the hummie girl had just said.  What the hummie girl was going to do.

"No!  Lysa, what are you doing?  This gobbie came in to kill your friends."

"You like killing humans.  Don't you, Gobbie?"  The gnome turned on the goblin.  She thrust out an accusing finger and then paid for it with a stab of pain that made her double over momentarily.  "And ... " she said through gritted teeth, "you'd do it again if you could too.  Wouldn't you?"

And then a flash of insight hit the gnome square between the eyes.  "And you know that we know this.  Don't you?  So why do you believe us?  Why do you believe that we'd just heal your dog and let you go?  Doesn't that sound a little ... suspicious?  What are the humans up to?  Eh, Gobbie?  The crafty humans.  What are the crafty humans up to?"

"I'll tell you what we want.  We want a trade.  We want to know things.  We know that Big Gugmut didn't organize this attack.  He may be the mighty son of a hobgoblin and a wild boar, but he's not smart enough to arrange this.  We want to know who gathered the tribes.  We want to know who planned the attack today."

"Doesn't that sound more like the crafty humans, Gobbie?  We want to know these things.  And, in exchange, we'll heal your dog and let you go.  How does that sound?  Fair trade?"
