Chapter #6f:  That's Armory (Kellan, Liseth)

Kellan shouldered his way through the small throng of men gathered outside the Garrison, clearing a path for Liseth and Kerr to follow him inside.  Those assembled fell back in what might have been awe; the reputation of the “Sandpoint Saviors” had only grown since the Swallowtail Festival, and here were two of them heading into the building most concerned with Sandpoint’s  security.  Whispers and nods followed the trio as Kellan opened the door and they all entered.

The interior of the Guard’s headquarters was a testament to calm efficiency.  The three guardsmen present, including Caul Thatcher, who still manned the desk, all seemed engaged in pressing tasks.  No one stopped to have the kind of good-natured interplay that Kellan might have expected in less-stressful circumstances.

Guardsman Thatcher, who was busily hunched over some official-looking document with Sergeant Valbert Peltnor, gave Kellan a friendly nod and looked curiously at his pair of acolyte followers, clearly wondering what was going on but just as clearly not going to ask, given his knowledge that Kellan had been designated for special assignments by Sheriff Hemlock, Lieutenant Barett, and none other than Mayor Deverin herself.

As they moved through the entry area, Kellan led Liseth and Kerr to a flight of stairs at the end of the hallway on the right.  Although the steep steps offered a choice of either ascent or descent, Kellan chose to lead his charges down the steep steps, stopping briefly as Kerr gallantly helped Liseth to overcome her natural awkwardness when it asserted itself mid-stairwell.

As they reached the bottom, they saw a hallway much like the one on the floor above stretching back in the direction they had come.  Liseth and Kerr could not help but notice a big set of double doors in the right-side wall, about halfway down the hallway.  Kellan made directly for these doors, above which hung a sign spelling out ARMORY in block letters, and as they approached they could see a smaller sign painted onto the doors themselves reading OFFICIAL SANDPOINT GUARD BUSINESS ONLY.

Kellan proudly removed the Armory key from his pocket, inserted it into the lock, and turned it, receiving a satisfying “click” in response.  The young guardsman then opened the Armory's doors, leading Kerr and Liseth into a wonderland of military delights.

The Armory was about 25 feet by 25 feet, and every square foot of its well-organized space was used for the storage and presentation of gleaming weapons and sturdy armors.  Large racks held polearms similar to the one Kellan carried, and chainmail of various sizes draped itself upon hangers running down a long pole located about five feet off the floor that spanned the length of the rightmost side of the room.

Other items were also neatly stored around the chamber, but Kellan wasn’t interested in these mundane tools of the guardsman’s trade.  He made his way directly to the back of the room, where a very large, mahogany armoire stood majestically among the rest of the room’s more-utilitarian items.

Kellan produced a smaller key from the ring, cousin to the first, and unlocked the cabinet.  Opening the doors, the three discovered four beautifully-made guisarmes fitted into a rack seemingly made especially for that purpose, with two masterfully-crafted light wooden shields hung as if standing guard on the armoire’s small connecting sides.  Two fine-looking sable cloaks lay folded up on one of the interior shelves; the group found four small, nondescript bags on the shelf immediately below and four vials of liquid on the one immediately below that.

OOC:  The group recognizes the guisarmes as masterwork cold iron guisarmes, and the shields as masterwork light wooden shields.  They are currently unable to tell if the cloaks, bags, or vials have any particularly-helpful (or –harmful) properties.

Re: Chapter #6f:  That's Armory (Kellan, Liseth)

Kerr held Liseth’s arm as they followed Kellan towards the Garrison, nodding at the young blonde’s question about his longbow and tracking skills.  Or lack thereof.  “Yes, well, I can understand your confusion.”  He laughed.  “It confuses Dav and my father as well.  Both of them tried to teach me tracking, but I could never get the hang of it.”  He sighed.  “Maybe I’m just not that perceptive.  Or something.”  He raised his hands defensively to ward off his father’s unseen criticism, shrugging and giving Liseth a self-deprecating smile.  “It always just looked like a bunch of dirt to me, you know?”

Kerr held the Garrison door for Liseth as they followed Kellan inside.  “But shooting a longbow is much different than following tracks.  I have always been,” the young man colored slightly, “something of a natural with a longbow.  My father even gave me my granddaddy’s bow that’s been in the family for generations because he thought it belonged with me.  See, my dad is kind of the opposite of me; he could track a fish through water but he’s never been much good with ranged weapons.”  He paused.  “Did you know my father taught Dav Hosk to track?”  The young acolyte said proudly.  “Just ask Dav!  He’ll say Karl Mollin’s the best tracker in the Hinterlands.”

When they reached the stairway, Liseth had some trouble making her way down the steps.  In the end, Kerr lifted her up in his arms and carried her the rest of the way down, setting her gently on the floor at the bottom of the stairs.  He stepped back and gave her a gentlemanly bow, offering her his arm again before they continued on towards the double doors.

“Anyway, I’m better than my father with a longbow, and I can give Dav a run for his money.  We have shooting contests all the time.”  He gave Liseth a conspiratoral grin as they waited for Kellan to unlock the Armory.  “You want to know a secret?  I kind of wanted us to go to Ven Vinder’s ‘Devil Hunt’ archery contest to show off and impress you, but I couldn’t figure out a way to bring it up without seeming like I was horribly stuck on myself."  He puffed his chest out slightly.  "I won the contest last year, you know.”  The young man flushed as he realized what he had just done, then laughed.  “Um, see?  Horribly stuck on myself.  HORRIBLY.  Why do you even hang out with me?”

Kerr’s mouth hung open as they walked into the Armory and observed all of the weapons and armor available to the Sandpoint Guard.  “Wow!  It’s like they’re ready to fight a war!”  Kerr said without thinking, before slapping himself in the forehead.  “Which I guess is a really good thing now, isn’t it?”

He moved over to the neatly hung suits of chainmail on the right side of the room.  “You think I should try some of this on?”  He raised a skeptical eyebrow.  “It looks constricting.”  He glanced over at Kellan, who had eyes only for the mahogany armoire.  “You’ve worn armor for a while, Kellan.  How does it affect you?”
