Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

"Of course I will."  Liseth smiled when Kerr squeezed her.  For a moment it was as though they weren't inside a dark, scary, monster-filled, underground ruin.  "That's why the gods put us together.  Because you're a brave, strong hero, and I'm the one who gets to make sure that you never change."  She nodded at Kerr's comment to Kellan about destroying evil, "That's right.  If you enjoy killing and destroying, even if you only kill evil things, it makes you just as bad.  That's why Sarenrae teaches that you should only ever kill something as a last resort; as long as they are alive, there is always a chance that they might be redeemed of their evil."

Then Liseth frowned, "I don't think that there was ever any chance of helping that quasit demon...it must have been worshiping Lamashtu for thousands of years.  And I don't know whether Rune Dogs or Skull Monsters can even change...they seem to attack right away.  Can Rune Dogs even talk and listen?"

Musing as Pisca walked out onto the walkway, with her safety rope attached just in case, Liseth almost forgot that they were still in a dangerous situation.  Wondering about whether it is possible to redeem savage monsters would have to come later.  Seeing that Kerr was readying an arrow, Liseth stepped up to lay a hand on his arm and grant him a minor blessing. It was about all that she could accomplish after the battle with the demon.

"Let Erastil guide your aim and let Iomedae give your courage.  May Sarenrae bolster your resolve, and let Desna soothe your worries."

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

"Rune Dogs!  Three of them." Pisca froze at the sight.  Three together.  They'd never fought three together at once.  Thank Desna for her Whisper Magic.

Three of them could get in around Stomper and make things tough for him.  However ...  The gnome looked back at the doorway.  It didn't look big enough for but one to come through at a time.  Yes.  That would be it.

"We can hold the door," sent the gnome over her Whisper Magic. "They can only come at us one at a time that way.  Get into position.  I'm going to put an arrow into a Rune Dog bottom and then run for the door."

Slowly, slowly she drew an arrow and nocked the shaft to her bowstring.  With the greatest of stealth she drew the arrow back till the fletching tickled her ear.

If only they had a keg of grease.  That would be just divine.  The Rune Dogs in the narrow passageway trying to keep their balance with Stomper chopping down on them with his polearm.  Divine.  Too bad they didn't think to bring a keg or two.

"Ready?  Just say when."

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Kellan perked up at the sound of Piscas voice. Three of them at once would be no small feat, and any that got though still carried that terrible poison. Even the smallest cut seemed to make the blood run hot, and the thought made the young guardsman wary. There would be no way to sneak around them, and they would have to be dealt with anyway. Steeling himself for another bout of combat he widened his stance and leveled the spear tip of his weapon towards the door.

Letting out a deep breath, he rolled his neck causing a few muted pops before he nodded to the gnome that he was ready.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Kerr watched Pisca creep out onto the wooden platform.  He watched her look to her left, then to her right.  He saw her react by nocking an arrow and pointing it off at something she saw to the right.  Mostly, he watched in bewilderment.

What was going on?

The bowman looked around in confusion and growing dismay.  "Wait," he whispered.  "What's going on?  Did Pisca SEE something in there?  Because it looks like she saw something in there."  Kerr was trying to get an idea out before Pisca did something irreversible but wasn't having the best of luck articulating it.  "Why is she engaging whatever-it-is alone?  Is she trying to draw it back here?  If so, are we SURE that this," he pointed to the door, "is the only way for whatever-it-is in there to get here?"  He tapped the floor with his hand where he was kneeling.  "These things might have been here for thousands of years, right?"

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Cato used Pisca's magic to whisper back to her.  "Pisca, we can lay of trap of sorts for the Rune Dogs.  I have one spell left, and can cast Grease on the floor in front of the door to slow down the Rune Dogs and make them vulnerable to us.  But you need to retreat in here once you draw their attention."

Cato relayed his plan to Kellan, Kerr and Liseth and readied to cast his spell when Pisca was out of the way.

Readied Action: Cast Grease on H0,H1,I0,I1 when Pisca retreats through door using Pearl of Power.

"That's the idea," the gnome replied through her Whisper Magic.  She drew a bead on some Rune Dog butt, took a breath, and then released the string.

And Pisca was in motion. Even before the meaty thunk of arrow striking flesh, even before the inevitable startled yelp of the arrow-struck, she was moving toward the door, barreling across the rickety boards of the walkway.

"Lookoutlookoutlookout," she called, leaving her Whisper Magic behind as well.  "Incoming gnome!"  She saw Stomper standing ready in the doorway, and with Cato's Grease coming at any moment, her place would be at the forefront.  That way none of the Rune Dogs would be able to slide past the grease and get in under Stomper's guard.

Pisca drew her slim blade as she pounded across the boards and then whirled just in front of Kellan.  "None shall pass," said the gnome, imagining her voice deep and infinitely menacing.  And then came the grease.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

"More Rune Dogs?"  Liseth whispered back once Pisca made her announcement, "Wait, Pisca; do you think that we could...or maybe if we..."  The girl's mind was going too fast for her to keep track of her thoughts.  She wanted to think of some plan, but she had really assumed that there wouldn't BE any more scary monsters down here after they got rid of the demon and it's summoning pool, and those skull monsters.

Needless to say, the short blonde was disconcerted by the news.  Three of them!  There wasn't much left that she could do in another fight like that; and if it went poorly, Liseth knew that she would quickly become too tired to keep channeling divine energy in order to help her friends.

"Pisca says that she sees three more Rune Dogs in there.  She's using Whisper Magic to talk to us, I guess she can't make it big enough to talk to you too."  Liseth responded to Kerr's seeming bewilderment.  Too bad Pisca couldn't whisper to him too, it wouldn't do to have someone left out of the loop.  "She wants to lure them up here so that they have to squeeze through the doorway one at a time."

Kerr's question made Liseth pause though.  What if they could get past Kellan some other way?  Maybe through a hidden tunnel that opens up in this very room!  The nervous acolyte did not like the implications of that; she kept imagining Rune Dogs popping up from trapdoors all around them.

"That doesn't sound very good at all...um...um um um..."  Liseth looked up when Pisca started her plan to lure the Rune Dogs to them and ran back into the room.  She looked down at the floor that Kerr was examining, then all around the statue room.  "Oh, I hope that there aren't any other ways for them to sneak in here..."

Surprise Action: Search for hidden or concealed doors in the statue room (Perception)

OOC: My bonus is only +1, so don't place too much stock in my ability to find anything!  I'm considering using my Herb Challenge Trait Bonus to give that another +1, but it says I can apply it after seeing the die roll.  So I'll leave that up to Racon's discretion.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Pisca fired her arrow with precision, drawing a pained yelp of surprise from the Rune Dog into whose buttocks she buried her bowshot.  The Rune Dogs had hardly turned their heads to locate the source of this surprise attack when the gnome darted out of sight, running back across the wooden platform to take up a position directly in front of Kellan, ready for anything.

A few seconds passed with only a brief scuffling sound indicating that anyone was in the prison-room at all.  Suddenly a Rune Dog burst up onto the top platform, growling and slavering and immediately heading in to attack as soon as he spotted the gnome and the warrior in the doorway.

Unfortunately for the Rune Dog, he hadn't taken into account the fine, slippery film that had suddenly appeared on the walkway at the behest of one Cato Crispin.  The Rune Dog immediately fell flat on his face, yowling in surprise and frustration as he scrabbled against the slippery surface.

Or perhaps it was fortunate.  Two of Kerr's arrows went flying over the creature's head as he struggled to recover his footing.

The Rune Dog let out a long, ululating cry which was met by short answering barks.  But those barks were the only sign the other Rune Dogs gave of their existence.  They did not appear on the wooden platform to support their comrade.  Where had they gone?  Only the Rune Dogs and perhaps the angry-looking Alaznist knew for sure.

"Get it, Stomper!"  With no one to oppose, with no one to defend against, the gnome whirled and took of at a quick sprint.

"I ... I have a bad feeling about something," was all the explanation that she gave.  She passed Kellan.  She passed Cato.  Briefly Pisca grabbed hold of Kerr Mollin's sleeve and used him as an anchor to pivot around as she took the corner

"Bad feeling.  Bad feeling," Pisca repeated as she rushed out into the dirt tunnel and looked to the north.  The dirt tunnel had to continue on for a reason.  And the big room of the rickety wooden platform looked to be just big enough to be where the dirt tunnel went.

Cato grinned as the first Rune Dog went down under the effects of his grease spell.  The mage had almost nothing in the way of magic left, and decided to save his last remaining acid dart for use if things looked grim.  Not that three Rune Dogs attacking them wasn't already bad!  Cato smiled.  Well, he still had a few more tricks up his sleeve.

Cato held the flask of acid in his robes and prepared to attack the Rune Dog when it stood.

"I don't see any trapdoors..."  Liseth knew that her not finding a hidden door did not mean that there wasn't one nearby.  That's why they were hidden, after all!  But before she could comment further, Liseth was startled by the cries and barks of the Rune Dogs.

It looked like they were going to have to fight again already...

"Wait, what do you mean Pisca?  What bad feeling?"  When the gnome suddenly ran off towards the tunnel, Liseth became flustered again.  Maybe the Rune Dogs can get through there?!

The young acolyte really didn't know what to do.  If those Rune Dogs did have another way to get at them, they could come from anywhere!  And she was almost exhausted of her usefulness.  Looking next to her at Kellan, Liseth laid a hand on his side before he could advance on the Rune Dogs with his spear.

"Gods guide your hand..."  She channeled a small amount of divine energy into Kellan, hoping to aid his spear in striking his savage opponent.

Then with a quick glance all around, the blonde girl decided that staying where she was could be a bad idea.  Especially if a Rune Dog managed to sneak behind her from that passage they just came down!  Liseth quickly limped around the statue of the Lady Runelord and stopped next to Kerr.

Maybe she wasn't actually more safe there, but being next to him at least made her feel that way.

Kellan put a hand on Piscas shoulder as they swapped placed, shuffling past her with his weapon clutched tight against his chest in the close confines of the hallway. As he stepped into the mouth of the room he caught a glipse of the oily sheen upon the floor before the terrible visage of a rune dog rounded the corner.

Despite having seen them so recently he jumped despite himself. The almost claustriphobic hallway, the darkness, noise and rapid movement all combined to bring back that almost nightmarish quality. He was upon it even as it scrambled alon the slick floor, its mishapen limbs sprawling this way and that. He jabbed at it with the spear point, reeling back for the thrust even as the gnomes troubled words filtered into his ear over the cacaphony.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Kerr looked helplessly at Pisca as she came barreling by him and took off down the western tunnel.  "Pisca, what . . . ?"  He said, somewhat uselessly, as the gnome was already off down the passageway muttering to herself about something being wrong.  Kerr wasn't too keen on the group splitting up; they seemed to have a pretty-defensible position in the statue-room and he would prefer to hold it rather than go running off to gods-knew-where.

Of course, it was becoming clear that Pisca and Kerr didn't share the same approach when it came to battle-strategy.

At all.

Kerr shot Liseth a quick, reassuring grin as she almost hobbled around the side of the statue to join him.  He was pretty concerned for her; she looked tired.  He wished there was something he could do for her.

He also wished there was something he could do to contribute to the fight against the Rune Dogs.  The sole available Rune Dog was already a difficult shot now that it was down on the ground, and Kerr would have to take care to avoid both Kellan and Cato if he wished to send any arrows that way.  It took only the two shots he had essayed earlier to convince him that sending good arrows after bad was a fool's errand until a clearer target presented itself.

But maybe Pisca knew something he didn't.

Kerr nocked an arrow and turned to watch the passageway down which the gnome had run off.  If she came scampering back with Rune Dogs on her tail, he would be ready.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Kellan's spear-strike into the flailing Rune Dog struck home, drawing an agonized wail from the creature.  Looking like nothing so much as a turtle or other shelled creature rolled over onto its back, the Rune Dog ceased its attempts to find a purchase on the greasy wood of the platform and half-curled into a ball, its entire attention on Kellan and his fearsome polearm, apparently deciding that doing whatever it could to avoid Kellan's weapon trumped all other considerations at this point.

Meanwhile, Pisca ran down the hallway to the excavation as quickly as she could, moving out into the corridor by which they'd originally entered the area just in time to see the other two Rune Dogs boil out of an opening at its terminus.  Apparently whoever had dug out the tunnel had broken into one of the cells, creating a passage between the prison area and the earthen tunnel.

The undamaged Rune Dog howled upon seeing Pisca, charging out of the breached cell and attempting to savage her with a bite, but it was simply too slow for the nimble gnome.  The other Rune Dog followed its companion at a more-measured pace, moving out to one side, easily dodging Pisca's stabbing rapier and simply sweeping her legs out from under her as she dodged its charging companion, landing her on both her pert gnomish rear end and in a great deal of hot water.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Was it a curse?  To always be right?  The gnomish curse.  The bane born to all gnomes across Golarion.

Inwardly, Pisca bemoaned her predicament.  Outwardly, she said, "This ... might ... hurt ... "

First lesson in defense:  Wave your sword around.  A lot.  Wave it around a lot.  Second lesson in defense:  Dodge and squirm a lot too.  Squirm.  After applying lessons First and Second of Basic Combat Defense ... the gnome stood up.

"Don't worry about me!" she called to the others as she backed cautiously into the hallway from which she'd just come.  "I'll hold these two here until Stomper can come ... well ... stomp them."

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Kellan felt the pole axe jerk this way and that as the rune dog writhed in pain before he withdrew it and moved to stab the creature once more. He hesitated however, just a fraction of a second at the creatures behavior. It's sheltering and attempt to get away seemed almost human...he had not thought these things really capable of thinking for themselves, or of self preservation.

His fear of the thing quickly overwhelmed the shock of this new discovery, causing him to  send his spear point towards the beasts rib cage in hope of ending it's struggles. He could hear Piscas voice dimly over the sound of the things squeals abd it did not sound good.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

It was another one of those moments when Liseth just did not know how she could help her friends.  Rune Dogs were rushing at them from two different sides, and then Pisca was thrown from her feet by them.  "Oh no, Pisca!"  But the gnome squirmed back to her feet, swinging her sword to deter the Rune Dog jaws biting at her.  The girl glanced quickly to her side to see Kellan stabbing at the other Rune Dog and Cato readying his magic.

"Cato, there's more Rune Dogs!  We have to help Pisca!"  This said despite Pisca saying to not worry about her.  Liseth was all the more frantic because there was very little that she could actually do to help.  She could just barely see the monsters looming over the little gnome; not that Liseth had anything she might be able to do to them.  She had dropped and wasted all of her special Befuddler bags...and the acolyte didn't think that conjuring a splash of water on one would deter a Rune Dog.

"Oooh..."  Liseth placed her arms around Kerr's waist, trying to not get in the way of his archery.  She glanced down the empty passage to their other side, as though expecting even more Rune Dogs to appear from there as well.  "Let your aim be true."  The girl whispered; at least she could help Kerr to help Pisca.

Cato looked at the lone Rune Dog writhing in grease on the floor, covered by Kellan.  "Kellan, it seems as though you've got this under control.  Pisca might need help facing two of those monsters at once."

Cato moved quickly past Kerr.  As he advanced down the hallway, the mage drew his quarterstaff.  "I seem to be relying on this more than I thought.  But in these tight quarters, I don't think I'm going to have a good chance at getting a spell off!  And I don't really have much left, either."

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

As Kerr kept watch down the hallway, he saw Pisca emerge out into the larger excavation, look to her right, and almost immmediately go down.  Kerr started with concern; he knew Pisca was too light on her feet to just fall on her rear for no reason and, far more ominously, he thought he could see other movement in the shadows, movement that looked to include slavering fangs and sharp claws.

"PISCA!!!"  He yelled, feeling without seeing Liseth's supporting arms and the divine encouragement they imparted.  He took off running down the hallway, nearly cursing the unfamiliar weight of his new breastplate, following hot on Cato's heels, and finally dodging to the right in order to clear up a shot on Pisca's nearest attacker.

The Rune Dog was RIGHT THERE, but fortunately far too involved in keeping Pisca on the floor to worry about the young acolyte's sudden presence on its flank.  Kerr quickly made the creature pay for that negligence, sending an arrow scoring along its side from a range so close that it seemed to Kerr as if they were almost in hand-to-hand combat despite the weapon involved.  As the freakish creature yowled in pain, Kerr briefly wondered how many more of these things there were down here, and if they would ever be done with these accursed catacombs.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Far from the flanking action between Pisca, the Rune Dogs, and what was rapidly becoming the rest of the party, Kellan fought his own personal Rune Dog in what was suddenly a one-on-one duel.  But things weren't very fair for the Rune Dog.  It couldn't stand, as a result could hardly defend itself despite its best efforts to do so, and as it flailed Kellan finished it off with an accurate chop that split its head open, spilling dark fluid out on the already-slick boards of the platform.

. . . Meanwhile . . .

As Pisca fell to the ground from the Rune Dog's sweep of her legs, she used her momentum to land on her back, roll over her shoulder, and end up right back on her feet, waving and squirming just like it said in the Big Book of Lessons.  The Rune Dogs snapped at her as she rolled and dodged, trying to keep her on the ground, but their teeth closed on empty air and in the case of the already-damaged Rune Dog almost ended up biting his freakish friend rather than the slippery gnome.

The first Rune Dog attempted to take the gnome's feet out from under her again as its companion moved around behind her.  The gnome couldn't keep her eyes on both of them, and as a result ended up back on her backside ineffectually trying to fend off the first Rune Dog's slashing claws.  She managed to keep it from doing as much damage as it could have, but she was still bleeding freely before she was able to disengage.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Kellan felt the skull give way under his blade before he wrenched in free with a grunt, whirring around and trailing black fluid in an arc across the wooden platforms. He felt a sudden clentching in his stomach as he realized more fully that the fight hsd been moved. They were being flanked!

Cursing under his breath the guardsman stalked down the hallway to his rear and gave a slightly sweaty, tight lipped look to Liseth as he broke into a jog. Relieved at seeing the others alive, albeit in combat he picked up the pace and ended up behind Cato, giving the mage a double pat on his shoulder as he came up to let him know he was there.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

When Kellan worked his way back and gave Liseth that look, she was at least sure he had...dealt with the Rune Dog that had fallen in the magical grease.  She didn't feel that she needed to look over there and confirm it.  After the guardsman passed by and turned down the tunnel to help the others, Liseth followed right behind him.  Everyone was down there now, and she couldn't do anything at all to help by staying back.

Liseth stopped right behind Kellan when he started to ready his spear.  She peeked past him and gasped when she saw Pisca being thrown once more to the ground, and then clawed at as the Rune Dogs got all over the tiny gnome.  And she couldn't even see Kerr anywhere!  He must have slipped around the corner, but that would mean he was right next to the Rune Dogs...

Kerr had said he hadn't ever swung a sword before, but if he was that close Liseth didn't know how he could bring his bow to bear, not without the Rune Dogs clawing and biting him.  She prayed that he would be alright.

"You can do it Kellan,"  The girl swallowed her concern for her boyfriend for the moment; right now she could only try to help Kellan.  "These evil monsters are no match for you."  She touched her hand to Kellan's back and channeled a mote of divine inspiration into him.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Cato squeezed his hands on his quarterstaff until his knuckles turned white and the lines in the wood dug into his palms.  He studied the Rune Dogs, closely watching the pattern of their bites, then waded out into the passage way, carefully stepping over Pisca and working to fend off attacks from the Rune Dogs with his quarterstaff.  My wizard training certainly never covered this! he thought to himself.  He kept up the careful pattern of step, riposte, step, block until his was in position behind a Rune Dog, ready to distract it for Kellan next turn.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Pisca sprang to her feet as Cato passed above her.  Bow in one hand and slim rapier in the other she stood with feet apart taking the briefest of pauses in order to breath through the pain of her wounds.  The gnome shook her head to clear the sweat from her eyes.  No.  It was blood.  Was she going to die again?

If death calls, then let there be a party in hell.  Who said that?  Did it matter?

The gnome watched herself as though she was a spectre floating above.  Below the gnome danced with rapier in hand.  A pretty little gnome.  Pretty bloody.  The little dancing gnome seemed gathered all of the concentration and wherewithal at her disposal.  She would have to, mused the spectral watching gnome.  It was either that or faint away from the horror of her own body so badly rent.  That, or flee for her life.  And, as the spectral watching gnome mused, the little dancing gnome lashed out, scoring a bloody line across the throat of one of the Rune Dogs.

Well done, thought the spectral watching gnome.  Unfortunately, there's only just so much that a small gnomish blade can do.  More's the pity.

Re: Chapter #7:  Catacomb Kids

Kerr had never been this up close and personal with anything at which he was shooting, much less a rampaging monster with razor-sharp claws, slavering jaws, and poisonous saliva.  The creature’s location mere feet away didn’t do anything to make Kerr feel good about the situation, especially considering how clear it was that these things would just as soon rip the young acolyte to pieces as look at him.

But the closest Rune Dog was apparently too concerned with tearing Pisca apart to worry about anything else, even after Kerr had already hit it with an arrow.  Kerr saw Cato slip by, holding his staff in a reasonable approximation of a guard stance, but the monsters were not even tempted by his passage.  They were solely concerned with disemboweling and eviscerating their gnomish quarry.

That had to stop.

Fortunately Pisca seemed to be able to take care of herself in this situation.  In an amazing display of agility, the gnome leaped to her feet by apparently pressing her back into the ground and undulating her body so that she kipped up into a standing position.  Her maneuver surprised both Rune Dogs, each of whose jaws closed ineffectually on the empty space that had just an instant before contained a prime gnomish meal.  Not only that, but the gnome was simultaneously able to quickly slip her rapier into the Rune Dog’s shoulder, a perfect strike causing it to rear back in surprise and pain.

This gave Kerr the opening he needed.  He sent his fletching flying four feet into the fiend’s forehead, and then one foot further to fully filet his foe.  The Rune Dog rocked back, Kerr’s arrow buried deep in whatever passed for its brain, and then collapsed to the floor, quite dead.
