Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

As Cato and Pisca ineffectually attempted to help, Kellan managed to use his free arm to grab the dog blocking the exit of the Observation Room and throw it into a corner with a mighty heave.  The dog snapped at empty air as it flew a few feet across the room, surprised at the big guardsman's unusual attack.

"Run, Kerr!!"  Kellan yelled.

The dark-haired acolyte didn't need any further encouragement.  As the dog recovered its bearings, Kerr sprinted through the room after Nualia, taking a nasty bite from the other dog for his troubles.  As he made it to the edge of the mist, he spotted the priestess of Lamashtu in the entry chamber, heading for the other door.  He pulled back an arrow and, with a prayer to Erastil, loosed it at the fleeing mastermind of Sandpoint's invasion.

The arrow flew true.

The shaft took Nualia in the shoulder, causing her to shriek and stumble into the doorframe.  But while the silver-haired woman was clearly hurting, she still managed to stumble down the hallway and up the stairs, out of Kerr's field of vision.

Kerr gritted his teeth.  "She's getting away!"  He called to his friends.

But his friends had their hands full with the devil dogs.  It didn't take the hound in the corner long to regain its balance--it lunged at Cato and tore up the prone wizard's shoulder, once again knocking him to the floor, unconscious and bleeding.  As the dog stepped over the wizard's unmoving body towards Liseth, the other dog attacked her, finding the young woman an easy target.  It ripped at her dress, tearing into her upper thigh with its razor-sharp teeth as Cato's summoned earth elemental slammed a rocky fist into the empty space the dog had so recently occupied . . . .

"GO, KERR MOLLIN!" the gnome shouted to the human who's voice had just come from down the short hallway.  "You're Sandpoint's only hope.  We'll take care of Liseth!  RUN!"

And then, "Yeh-yeah!  You can't bite me!  Stupid dogs!"  Pisca waved her arms as she dodged past Kellan's legs, rushing past the two Demon Dogs to draw their attention away from Liseth and Cato.

"Get ready to stand and run to the corner, Lys.  I think I saw an alcove that you could squeeze into just to the side of the fountain.  We can protect her there, Stomper," whispered the gnome through her magic, taking precautions for secrecy just in case these particular dogs understood Common.  They certainly seemed to understand Noopy Girl.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

This time Liseth really felt the pain from the devil dog's bite!  As its teeth shredded her dress and her leg in the same crunching action.  A high scream escaped from the girl; both real and supernatural fear hitting home as the monsters snarled their intentions at her.

She pressed her back against the wall behind herself in a panicked attempt to get further away from the horrible devil dogs.  Then Pisca's words reached her and she looked to see that there was a slight opening; if only she could make it past the dogs and get behind Kellan!

Tears and whimpers came from Liseth as she staggered gracelessly to her feet, following Pisca's words.  Would Pisca's distraction work?  The girl watched the devil dogs carefully, she had to run past them if she had the chance; or raise her shield and hope for the best...

Cato had just opened his eyes and prepared to move when the mage was again savaged by one of the summoned dogs, barely managing to yell in pain before he fell into unconscious again.  His summoned elemental, undaunted by the fall of its master, continued to pummel on the dog, again to no effect.

Kelan heard Kerr's cries of frustration, but Kellan took one look at Cato and knew that he could abandon the wizard, even if it meant Nualia had time to gather her strength. He stepped back to give himself some room then thrust the psearpoint towards the chest of the wretched thing, hoping to impale it on the end of his weapon.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Kerr was momentarily caught in an agony of indecision.  Everything inside of him screamed to run back in and help to save Liseth from the savage teeth of the devil hounds who seemed to want to do nothing more than rip her limb from limb.  But he also knew that this was their best chance to destroy Nualia and her plans for Sandpoint.  Hundreds of lives stood in the balance.

One life stood in the balance.

And in that moment, Kerr knew which side of that ledger he cared for more.

"Go, Kerr Mollin," a voice whispered in his head as he turned to rush back into the fog.  Was it Pisca?  Or someone . . . something else?  Kerr didn't care--he was prepared to ignore the voice, the injured Nualia, ignore everything in order to save Liseth.  But in that momentous split-second he saw the fog thin in front of him to coalesce more thickly around the blonde acolyte.

"Go, Kerr Mollin."

With an anguished yell of frustration, Kerr turned and ran down the hallway after Lamashtu's priestess, wondering if he would ever see the woman he loved again, or if she would ever forgive him for abandoning her in the hour of her greatest need.

*****

Meanwhile, the thickening fog curled around each and every creature in the room, obscuring vision and making combat almost impossible.  Briefly shielded from the devil dogs' vision, Liseth stumbled to her feet and past Kellan, barely avoiding the hounds' blindly slashing jaws as she did so.  As she staggered to the relative safety of the fountain alcove, Liseth knew that but for the sudden thickening of the fog she would have been lying on the ground like Cato, bleeding and broken.

The dogs howled in frustration as they realized their quarry had retreated behind Kellan's steel bulwark and Cato's still-formidable summoned earth elemental.  They leaped forward, both attacking Pisca, who seemed to be the weak link in the living wall between them and the injured Liseth, but the agile gnome was simply too quick for their snapping jaws.  Growling and snarling echoed through the fog as the battle continued . . . .

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Lost within the blinding fog, Liseth heard more than saw the jaws of the devil dogs snapping closed mere inches from her body.  As she crept upwards from the floor, that was all of the inentive she needed to dash past the monsters; following Pisca's directions through the fog until finding the huge form of Kellan.

Listening to the frustration of the monsters that wanted to shred her apart, Liseth herself wasn't even sure how she had managed to evade them and stagger to a stop behind Kellan.  Then she remembered the divine presence tht she had felt battling just as hard as they were to conquer this evil.  Sarenrae must have shielded her with Her very own hand...

Most of the irrational fear that she had felt semed to have faded, now that Liseth was more or less secure behind Kellan.  But Cato was still out in that fog, and needed help.  The acolyte's mind scrambled for a way that she could heal him, but she couldn't even see where he was, and thos dogs were still waiting for her out there.

But it looked Like Pisca had an idea.  If the dogs did go for the gnome's bait this time, Liseth and Kellan both could make it to the hallway and help Cato.  She was more than concerned about exposing herself though...if it didn't look like those dogs were going to be distracted, she would need to climb into that alcove and hope that Kellan could keep them away...

The gnome dodged the snapping teeth.  "Come on, Lys.  We've drawn them away from the door," Pisca shot through the aether of her Whisper Magic, the word going out to all of her friends - even The Boyfriend, given that he was still within the range of the magic.  "Lets get out.  I'll lead the way.  We need to help Cato too."

"Kerr Mollin, are you there?" the gnome whispered as she barreled around the side of one of the dogs in such a way as to invite the attention of the sharp teeth and powerful jaws.  "We'll get Liseth out of here.  Don't worry.  We will."

Kellan held his ground as Pisca ran around in an attempt to draw the dogs attention, but the guardsman was worried about protecting Liseth at the moment, and some how with Kerr absent he felt that duty all the more important. Sadly, even driven as he was to save the lives of his friends, he could not seem to hit the dogs in the ferocious melee.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

The dogs forged ahead, their gazes fixed on the young girl hiding behind Kellan.  They ignored Pisca as the gnome scampered around the eastern end of the room to take up a position behind the unconscious Cato, instead snapping and biting at the guardsman in an attempt to get through him to their quarry.

As Liseth climbed up onto the shelf in the northwestern part of the room, using the alcove to shield herself from the devil dogs' furious assault, Kellan took a quick step back and tried to slash one of the dogs with his polearm.

He missed.

The dog, however, dodged right into the swing of the summoned earth elemental's clenched hands.  The impact's audible "thud" and the resulting yelp suggested that the elemental had hurt the dog, although it had not yet dissuaded the hound from its single-minded pursuit of its white-robed prey.

Frustrated with their inability to get past Kellan to Liseth, the dogs concentrated their attacks on him.  The young guardsman knocked the first hound's head aside, but was unable to stop the second one from tearing into his calf and dropping him to the floor.  As he landed on the hard stone floor, he felt the venom from the dog's saliva entering his bloodstream, slowing his reaction time and making him more sluggish as he scrambled to keep the dogs away from the acolyte huddling behind him.

"Pisca!"  Lunk's favorite gnome heard Kerr's voice, ragged with heavy breathing, through her magical connection.  It sounded like he was running.  "I'm after Nualia," he panted, "is Liseth okay . . . there she is!  She's got a scroll!"  As the seconds ticked away and the summoned fog disappeared, Pisca heard nothing further . . . .

Kellan hit the ground with a clatter of steel links, his calf torn open and bleeding openly as he felt whatever was in the wound work it's way into his veins and make his heart feel like it was going to pound right out of his chest.

The young guardsman's head swam as he got to one knee, warding off the things with the point of his weapon before he staggered to his feet painfully amid the melee. With no room at all to swing he choked up high on the weapon and was more or less punching with the blade at this point as he cocked back another powerful blow and let fly at the creature in front of him.

He would protect Liseth here or die trying.

"He's running!"  Though the gnome had the presence of mind to send her words though her Whisper Magic, she did not seem to have the same composure when it came to identifying just who it was that was running.  Fortunately, her words that followed seemed to clarify that in a way.  "He says that he's after Noopie Noop.  He's found her!"

"Lysa's fine.  We're protecting her ...  Oop.  I think he's out of range.  That was bad.  He said that Noo noo had a scroll," said the gnome as she, simultaneously fished into her pouch for one of the potions that they had wrung from the Goblin King.

"Get him, Stomper," she said aloud as Kellan rose and took a swing at the most injured of the two Demon Dogs.  Her own arm drew back and the ARD flashed through the air with great accuracy.

"We need to finish things up here and go help Kerr Mollin.  He could be in trouble."

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

In the process of climbing up onto the shelf tucked into the back of the room, and knocking over a few objects in the process, Liseth concluded that there was nowhere else to run.  She was lucky that Kellan was there, there was no way that Liseth could ever hope to fend those monsters off.  They couldn't get through him...

Liseth didn't know which was worse as the fog finally lifted.  Before she could only hear the terrible growling and snapping; but now that it was gone she could see clearly the horrible creatures as they tore at Kellan.  Pulling the big guardsman to the ground so that they could get at her.

And now that the fog was gone, she could see Cato across the room.  Bleeding on the floor...the girl felt her panic coming on.  It didn't help when Pisca said that Kerr was in trouble.

"Through Sarenrae's glory, heroes find respite."  Before she had know it, Liseth had retrieved one of the minor holy texts which Father Zantus had provided her before they left Sandpoint.  Reading it aloud, the letters scribed on the piece of parchment glowed brightly with a divine light; in the next moment the acolyte had laid the parchment on Kellan while he fended off the monsters.  The light quickly entered him as the parchment it was written on burned away.

"Kerr!"  The girl shouted, unsure whether he could even hear.  She silently prayed for his safety.  Because there was little that she could do herself while cornered by these savage monsters...

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

As Liseth looked on, it seemed to her that Kellan was a hero from a storybook, one where the courageous warrior battled against all odds to defeat the seemingly-overwhelming evil set against him.  The bloodied guardsman dragged himself to his feet, using his bulk and his armor to fend off the hounds' gnashing jaws as they worked in concert to overwhelm him and and get to their white-robed target.

Once on his feet, Kellan drew his polearm close and waited for the injured dog to strike.  As it leapt forward, he struck out, impaling it on the blade of his weapon.  Its hate-filled eyes filled with shocked surprise, then closed as its life-blood spilled out of its chest.  Its breath came in gasping wheezes as it slumped the floor, unconscious.

The remaining dog seemed undeterred by its companion's demise.  It continued its assault but slipped on the blood-slicked stones, just barely retaining its balance and not really posing any threat to Kellan as it flailed to keep its footing.

Pisca's dagger flew in and hit the dog, but seemingly bounced off with no effect to return to the gnome's hand.  Cato's summoned elemental stepped forward and brought it's clasped fists down yet again, although this time inflicting only a glancing blow that the attacking dog barely seemed to notice.

Yeah!  Dog down.  Dog down!

"Now, Lysa.  Run!"  The gnome whispered encouragement to her friend, even as she knelt at Cato's side.  With the wax seal now popped from the vial of curative potion, Pisca gently tipped it at the corner of his mouth.  The clear restorative potion trickled in, but the trick was to do so in such a way as to get the unconscious human to swallow and not spit or gag.

"Run, Lysa.  Here's our chance.  We have to get to Kerr Mollin.  You and Stomper go.  I'll hold off the last dog."

"Come on, Cato.  Drink.  You have to get up.  Get up and get out of the room.  We have to help Kerr Mollin.  But first, you have to get up and go."

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Kellan got it!  Some minor relief washed over Liseth; these Devil Dog monsters couldn't past Kellan.  But on the same toke, the girl was still trapped.  She couldn't get out from her hiding spot behind the big guardsman without the remaining Devil Dog coming after her.

And according to Pisca, Kerr was in trouble!  They had to help him!

"I can't run..."  The slight teen whined in response to Pisca.  "It'll get me..."  Liseth bit her lower lip, "Kellan...can you shove it away?  If you can do that, i might be able to escape.  We can't leave Kerr to fight Nualia alone!"

She watched carefully then, keeping an eye on the evil monster dog.  If there was any opening at all, she needed to take it.

Cato blinked his eyes, and sat up.  The mage awkwardly regained his feet, staring around at the combat, trying to piece together what had changed.  He stumbled from the room, following Pisca's directions without further thought, trusting in his allies while he studied the scene.  His earth elemental had gone, the spell's duration finally ended, even with the increased duration Cato had managed with intense study.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Kellan felt the blade catch in the meat of the dog as he slammed the weapon home, and felt a slight surge of pride and relief as he realized that the odds looked much more even with just one of the creatures left to contend with.

Now he needed to clear a route to the door before poor Kerr was overwhelmed.

"Back! Get back damn it!" The guardsman shouted as he brought the haft of his weapon about chest level and attempted to shove the creature away to clear a lane for Liseth. If it dared to try and follow her, at the least he could hope to try and take the legs out from under it.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

The summoned elemental stepped forward, looking as if it would finish the battle once and for all, when suddenly it disappeared, leaving the battle just as quickly as it had joined it.  The party would have to finish off their remaining opponents without the elemental's assistance.

As Pisca knelt and administered the curative potion to Sandpoint's assistant sage, Kellan and the remaining devil dog waged an intense but inconclusive struggle over Liseth's fate.  Kellan made a valiant attempt to throw the hound away from the acolyte, but it managed to elude his grasp, keeping its gaze fixed on Liseth and refusing to give her any opening to escape.

In response, Liseth shrunk further back into her alcove, praying for the gods' assistance.  As she did so, a glowing light once again filled the room, bathing everyone--save the dogs--in a restorative glow.  Cato in particular looked much better, managing to scramble to his feet and past Pisca, out the door and into the hallway.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

"Go, Cato," urged the gnome.  "Stomper and I will help Liseth.  Help Kerr Mollin.  His voice went silent just after he reported spotting  New Skin Girl.  At the very least, you can act as a link between them and us.  Report back what you see."

"Maybe."

"Hopefully."

With those whispered words, Pisca re-entered the room, creeping up on the Demon Dog from behind.

"Oh-Cha!" she cried, and flashed the mighty ARD at the Dog of Evil.  It was a stab meant to distract.  It was a stab meant to provide that smallest necessary edge to Stomper Storval.

"Get it now, Stomper," the gnome then whispered.  And then, "Go, Lysa.  Go."

How the gnome intended to get herself out of the room after her human friend got clear was just not something that Pisca Neep Freemish had thought of.  Not yet, at least.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

The Devil Dog was terrifyingly tenacious.  Even as it battled Kellan, the monster kept its eyes on its young prey.  Liseth saw it react immediately when she thought that she had an opening to slip through.  It was just waiting for her to try, so that it could pull her to the ground and pounce on her.

It would ignore Kellan if it could get to her, of this the acolyte had no doubt.  A frightening thought.

"Pisca, you have to help Kerr!"  The blonde girl called out as Pisca moved in to try and distract the devil dog from her.  Liseth was scared, but she was safe behind Kellan.  "Kellan can protect me, you have to help Kerr to stop Nualia!"

Even as she spoke, Liseth watched for an opening in the melee.  If that monster took it's eyes off of her for a few moments, maybe she could make it...

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

All the magic in the world and a few good friends besides could do nothing against the all powerful force of plain old bad luck, as Kellan found out as he failed to maneuver his weapon in the tight confines of the room and instead banging the haft loudly off the wall as he attempted to lash out at the distracted dog.

Time was ticking for Kerr, and they could only afford so many mistakes.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

Kellan saw Pisca slip up behind the remaining dog, distracting it with her dagger as she harried it from behind.  As the dog turned to nip at the gnome, Kellan used the opening to launch his own attack on the hound.  As he did so, he felt Liseth's light touch on his back and experienced a brief surge of divine power from the diminutive oracle.

With all the assitance--both divine and mundane--Kellan's blow struck true, nearly impaling the second dog in the same manner he'd impaled the first.  But at the last second the dog managed to twist itself to the side, causing the guardsman's polearm to score its shoulder instead of taking it directly in the chest.

Angered by the distraction, the dog used the force of the polearm's strike to turn towards the surprised gnome, burying its teeth in the off-arm she threw up to defend herself.  The hound finished its attack by dragging Pisca to the ground by her arm.  As the gnome sprawled out on the stone floor, her assailant quickly turned its attention back to Liseth, again trying to find a way to attack the blonde around Kellan's bulk.

Meanwhile, Cato made his way into the lower level's entry hall.  But he neither saw nor heard any sign of Kerr or Nualia.  It was as if both combatants had simply disappeared.

Re: Chapter #8:  The Stronghold of Mine Enemies

"There's only one way that they could have gone, Cato" replied the gnome from the cold cold floor of the Observation Room.  "I jammed the only other door that we've seen so far.  So, they'd have to have gone back up the stairs the way we came down."

A splatter of blood struck her cheek, and from the yelp and the accompanying meaty thunk, the blood could only have come from the Demon Dog.

"Tell Kerr Mollin that we've taken down one dog, Cato.  And that we're near to chopping down the second.  Go.  Don't worry about us.  We're near done here.  Back up the stairs.  Go, Cato.  Go."

Pisca popped up off the floor and swung the ARD again at the head of the Demon Dog.  This time, however, the swing was as wild as the gnome, and hardly a distraction at all.

"Bring it down, Stomper!" she called to her big armored human friend.  "Hit it again and lets bring this one down."
