Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Pisca quietly crept forward, followed closely by Kellan, Cato, Liseth, and Kerr.  The southern opening led to a long, cave-like tunnel.  Since the inky-black darkness defeated even Pisca's gnome-sharp eyes, she used a cantrip to summon a faintly-glowing, vaguely-gnomish shape to scout ahead.  With any luck, whatever might lurk in the caves would attack it instead of her.

The narrow fissure opened up into a long cave with a 25' high ceiling; the air was rancid with the smell of rotten meat.  The source of the horrific odor was readily apparent--carcasses strewn about the floor.

Pisca's gnomish simulacrum pranced into the room with no apparent effect.  Pisca, sneaking along behind, was about to do the same when a lone pebble hit her in the head.  Glancing up, she saw a monstrously-sized bat with mottled, decayed flesh and eyes that smoldered with an unholy green glow hanging from the ceiling.  The bat silently spread its wings, ready to feast upon its visitors . . . .

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

*whew*  The gnome heaved something of a quick sigh of relief and then added, from all observation to the monstrous bat itself, "I thought you might turn out to be a flying badger."

An even quicker glance behind her told Pisca how unprepared her friends were for a Diving Bat Attack.  "Hey!  Batty bat."  She waved her arms about and jumped in the air.  And when she came back down, Pisca did so on her toes, ready to dodge and weave.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

The giant bat swooped down upon the capering gnome, wings spread and teeth bared.  It made no noise until its oversized mandibles snapped shut on what it thought would be Pisca's head.  But she had already dodged to the side, focused completely upon avoiding the slavering creature's attack.  The bat made a frustrated choking, grunting sound, opening its mouth for what looked like another bite . . . .

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

"Don't you dare," the gnome warned the Bat of Truly Tremendous Size.  What she was warning off, however, whether it was another ineffective Bat Bite, or something else otherwise unexpected, was one of those Mysterious Pisca Sorts of Things that might never ever be understood.  To back up the threat however, Pisca's new slim rapier jumped from hip to hand.  The gnome stood ready.  With a mean look on her face.

"Don't you dare."

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Cato stopped, staring at the large creature.  "That's a big bat."  The utterly mundane comment was all Cato could come up with.  Then his mind kicked into action, and he realized he should do something.

He reached into his pouch and his hand emerged with a few grains of a fine, shiny sand-like substance.  "[Language unknown: Ceisal staund-undure!]" he shouted, and flung out his hand, as motes of golden dust exploded into existence around the great creature.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

As Pisca drew her rapier, a cloud of golden particles covered the bat, glittering and glinting in macabre contrast to the beast's desiccated flesh.  But neither the spell nor Pisca's warning seemed to have any effect on the bat; it finished its intake of breath, then issued an awful, ear-shattering screech that reverberated throughout the cave and down the fissure.

The noise was truly piercing, threatening to shatter the eardrums of any who heard it.  The waves of sound penetrated deep within the body of each party member--perhaps to their very soul--trying to stun them into immobility.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

It difficult at first to see what had gotten Pisca's attention; right until the massive jaws snapped right into view.  It was huge!  Was that a Foxglove pet?  Or a horrible monster who had moved in recently?

Before she could do anything, the behemoth bat let out the most horribly screech Liseth had ever heard; magnified all the more terribly by the closeness of the cavern.  The force of the screech shoved her backward almost physically; the little acolyte dropped the light enchanted stone she had been holding as her hands went up to her ears.

Her head was spinning and her ears were ringing.  Liseth's vision blurred almost as though she had a concussion.  She was helpless.

Condition: Stunned
A stunned creature drops everything held, can't take actions, takes a –2 penalty to AC, and loses its Dexterity bonus to AC (if any).

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

At first, there was shock.  No.  Make that Bat Shock.  At first, there was Bat Shock.  That it would have the nerve to do it in the face of her warning.

Then there was Bat Denial.  No.  Just No.  That's denial.  No, was the gnome's reaction as she saw with a glimpse, each of her friends behind her stunned to immobility.

Then there was Bat Anger.  The eyes of the gnome narrowed down to stubborn slits and her lips formed into a pursed line of defiance.  The shiny new rapier waved in the air at the Ginormous and hugely dry bat.  Desiccated, Pisca thought - more of an afterthought, actually - as she spoke her challenge.

"None shall pass."

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

The awful scream echoed off the walls of the cavern, seeming to increase in volume and intensity as it did so.  Kerr, spared the direct force of the bat's cry, watched helplessly as Liseth cowered in front of him.

"Liseth!  Switch with me!"  He yelled, but she didn't even respond.  Maybe she couldn't even hear him.  Her hands covered her ears, as if she could retroactively reject the creature's cry.

As gently as he could, Kerr reached for the blonde acolyte and picked her up, carefully turning so as not to hit her head on the narrow, rough walls of the fissure, and deposited her safely behind him.  Then he stepped forward, over the lightstone, and looked down the stony hallway.

Things weren't much better there, he found.  Both Cato and Kellan were grabbing their heads, unable to respond or react after the bat's stunning sonic barrage.  Only the indefatigable Pisca remained active, jumping and dancing about, trying to keep the beast's attention on her.  As Kerr reached for an arrow, he saw the thing's maw rip at Pisca's arm, nearly tearing the rapier out of her grip . . .

Badgers  The curse nearly ripped from her mouth as pain gashed her arm.  But there was something else in that bite, and Pisca fought it.  Felt it slowing her limbs, and had to fight it.  Or they'd be dead.  They'd all be dead.

She fought.  And she won.

"Is that you, Kerr Mollin?" she called out after catching movement from the corner of her eye.  "Let that be you," she said as she checked her grip on her blade, a grip made slippery with her own blood, and stood against the Ginormous Dry Bat.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Reach out with your senses, Kerr.  Was it a voice?  A thought?  A premonition?  Whatever it was, Kerr stretched out with his being, just as Ser Klerris had taught him, feeling for the bat's essence.

What he found was enough to almost make him drop his arrow.  The bat was evil.  Pure evil.  And given the situation, the young paladin decided it was time to call on divine aid.

Erastil, guide my arrow.  Kerr prayed as he nocked it.  Desna, bless its travel.  Iomedae, give me your power to end this evil being!

Kerr felt a surge of divine power course through him.  He released the arrow, watching it speed toward the bat, confident of success . . .

. . . and at the last second the monster darted toward Pisca; the missile sped harmlessly past, clattering off some unseen wall on the other side of the cavern.  Kerr gritted his teeth in disgust.  He didn't have time to fail--Pisca's life hung in the balance!

Fortunately the evil creature's assault on Pisca was just as ineffective as Kerr's had been--the injured gnome dodged to one side, easily avoiding the creature's fangs.  With Kellan and Cato continuing to cower, Kerr reached for another arrow, praying that this time his aim would be true . . .

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Some decisions, or so it seemed, were like fairy figments.  They came and went as a flicker in the corner of the eye.  There was the arrow.  There was the sudden, last-second lunge by the bat.  Both were but fleeting touches upon the gnome's perception.

And yet, somehow, she was aware, and chose to intervene.

With a few compact words of power she reached out to mold the clay of time and space, making the lunge of the bat just a hair slower, leaving it just that much longer in place so that the arrow, when it made its passage, met flesh instead of air.

A smile turned up one corner of Pisca's mouth even as she danced the Bat Dance of delay.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Kerr missed the giant bat with his next shot as well, and fought off discouragement as he drew another arrow to his cheek.  Ser Klerris had said that summoning divine power should be done sparingly, but when a paladin did it he would have overwhelming superiority against evil.

Kerr did not feel overwhelmingly superior right at this moment.

He let his third arrow fly.  It sped through the air and, whether or not guided by divine providence, found its mark.  It tore into the bat's side, causing it to screech and buck as if it had just been scalded with hot water.

Whether because it wanted to get at Kerr or because it had tired of trying to catch the dancing, dodging gnome, the bat took to the air and flew over Pisca to get at Kellan.  The stunned guardsman was not a match for the bat's giant jaws, and its teeth tore into the sergeant's left shoulder . . . .

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Kellan recoiled and stumbled, his hand going to his ears in vain as he tried to block out the inhuman screech that hit him like a physical thing. He barely kept his footing, and as he reeled and staggered he cried out in pain as the bats jaws found his shoulder, nearly taking him off his feet in its savagery.

He felt the metal links of his hauberk press into his flesh with the tremendous force and he fought back, as best he could manage, his fist punching the thing awkwardly in it's broad head. As it relinquished it's grip Kellan was quick to  take up his pole axe and chopped overhead, aiming squarely for the furry belly of the gigantic winged thing before he stepped back into the relative cover.

Pisca the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces assessed the tactical situation even while the enemy flew with heavy forces directly above.

"Pull back," whispered General Pisca into her Extremely Secret Communications Gear.  "Into the tunnel.  Just enough that the bat can't get at Kellan."

"Yah!  Hah-tcha!"  A glance behind revealed things going well, everyone pulling back into the tunnel as planned.  Stomper did not look well, though.  And she herself was spattering drops of blood from her wounded arm.

"Watch our backs, Lys," Pisca whispered through her magic.  She herself had begun backing into the tunnel beneath gusts from flapping leather wings.  "That screech was awful loud."

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

There was a vague recollection of being moved by Kerr.  The ringing in her ears subsided finally and Liseth's vision cleared.  She heard Pisca's whispering about pulling back and agreed; she wouldn't do much but get in the way inside that tunnel logjam.

"Alright..." The acolyte was less agreeable to keeping watch.  It was dark too; she lost her light enchanted stone when that bat screeched.  "Sarenrae, send your light to this dark tunnel."

With her amulet shedding bright light Liseth walked back through the tunnel towards the stairs.  She really hoped that there wasn't anything coming.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

The bat screeched in pain as Kellan's polearm bit deep into its abdomen, then in fury as the guardsman stepped back, just out of easy reach.  Kerr's arrows went flying past the beast, one to the left, one to the right; the young archer continued having difficulty shooting around Pisca and Kellan.

Pisca fell back into the space Kellan had just vacated, continuing to focus entirely upon defending herself.  Unfortunately for the intrepid gnome, she jumped when she should have ducked and the bat sunk its teeth deep into her other arm, almost causing her to faint from the pain as it threw her against the wall.

In the meantime, Cato and Liseth moved back down the corridor, on the lookout for anything that might be coming to investigate the bat's scream.  And Liseth found just that as she moved around the corner--a ravening ghoul!  The ghoul seemed almost as surprised as she was, despite the bat's cry, and in its astonishment was reduced to nipping at her ineffectually.

Gathering itself, the undead monster let out a ferocious snarl, and Liseth's eyes widened as she saw another one of the creatures just behind the first one . . . .

"They're here!"  Liseth jumped as the ghoul's jaws snapped shut just ahead of her. Everyone else was busy with that monster bat; the acolyte might be stuck with these ghouls on her own.

"By the power of the divine," she called out to the only defense available to her.  Holy light began to gather, "I banish you!"  The holy energy shot outward to wash over the horrible ghouls.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

As his two arrows sped past the bat, Kerr fought against a desperate anxiety that seemed intent on clawing its way out of his gut.  He felt like he couldn't hit anything, even with the divine focus.  Maybe he hadn't invoked the power correctly?  Ser Klerris had drilled him in it so often, but there was always a difference between drill and reality.

Things only got worse as the bat tossed Pisca into the wall like some sort of rag doll.  It should have been dead already, if Kerr could only make his . . .

No.  Kerr steeled his resolve.  He was a paladin of Iomedae.  He was not going to let this undead flittermouse beat him, and he was not going to let it hurt his friends any more.  A preternatural calm came over him; he stood tall and drew an arrow to his cheek, whispering a soft prayer as he let the projectile fly . . .

Iomedae's grace guide you.

The shaft sped through the air, past Kellan, past the reeling Pisca.  It took the giant bat in the eye, skewering its brain.  As it exited the other side of the creature's skull, the bat's head disintegrated in a burst of divine energy.

The rest of the monster's body fell to the ground, no longer sustained by the foul unlife that had animated it until just seconds ago.  The monster was destroyed.

At just that moment, Kerr saw a flash of positive energy illuminate the tunnel down which Liseth had retreated.

"Liseth!"  He started running back down the fissure . . . .

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

"Go.  Stomper."  The gnome forced the words out from between gritted teeth as she fought the pain, fought the paralyzing liquid fear that coursed through her blood.

"Wait."  As Pisca spoke fey words of power a gentle glow lit the tips of fingers that swirled through the air at the ends of the gnome's turning hand.  She brushed the glowy bits against Kellan's leg, leaving a streak that pulsed once before sinking into the young guardsman's body.

"Alright.  Now go," said the gnome through a veil of pain and not a little shock.

I'll just ... she said, and she waved a hand in the general direction of the interior of the cave.  Or, at least she though she had said those words.  It was difficult to tell after having been up all night.  And having being bloody and bat bitten.  And all covered in dried bat dust.  And the sparkly bits from a burst of divine energy.

Pisca gave the little glowing gnome a look and a wave of the hand that very much said, You, go over there now.  Then she edged around the giant bat body and into the cave to ensure that there were no more dangerous things that might beset them from deeper within the cave.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Kellan did not have time to thank Pisca as he turned and dasked back the other way, his armored bulk and cumbersome pole arm clattering off the uneven walls as he bounded down the passage to pause in the one second that seemed relatively straight...one he could stand up in.

"Pull back!, Pull Back!" he uncouraged Cato and Liseth as he set himself up to impale the next unnatural thing that rounded the bend.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Pisca waded through the sea of corpses towards the cave's southern wall.  As she did so, her glowing apparition moved into the cave's northwest corner, revealing that the opening in that portion of the wall led to a small, enclosed, chamber that--from a distance--looked to be part of a long-disused well system.

The stink of death and decay was even stronger in the middle of the room.  As her glowing, gnome-shaped light moved, Pisca saw a brief, bright glint from one of the bodies in the center of the cavern's floor.  Other than that, there was no movement or sign of life.

***

Liseth's wave of positive energy flowed through the fissure, causing the first ghoul to grimace and the second one to scream in pain and retreat out of sight.  As Cato's acid dart flew by ineffectually, the ghoul next to Liseth snarled and attacked, becoming a flurry of claws and teeth that sliced and cut the blonde acolyte terribly.
