Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Being right was good.  Especially for a gnome.  It took so much gnomish effort to realign the world when things had gotten themselves wrong.  All that being the case, however, being right about terrible things did nothing at all to mitigate the terribleness that those things brought with them.  And this was the biggest lesson that Pisca had learned today.

"Oh Aldren ... "  The point of her slim blade sank to the floor, and her eyes welled with the deepest of violet sympathy.

"Oh Aldren."  The repetition of Pisca's shock and pity escaped into the world before her face firmed up upon the realization that there was a task still at hand.

"The Seven Pointed Star," began the gnome in a voice that was clear and high, seeming to cut through the fetid air of the chamber, "what do they have planned?  And where can we find them, Aldren?"

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

"The Brotherhood of the Seven," Aldern's ruined face grimaced in concentration as he twisted the knife into his hand.  "They own this place, or will.  I found the recorded deed in my grandfather's records.  They gave him the money to build Foxglove Manor."

"I suspected they might have been behind all the tragedy that befell my family in the interim.  Maybe they and my grandfather had a falling out, I don't know.  So I reached out through my contacts in Magnimar, and they were only too happy to reach back."  He chuckled mirthlessly.  "Only too happy."

"I was arrogant."  He lifted his gaze from his pinioned hand.  "Cocky.  I thought my position and influence and money and popularity would shield me from anything they could do."  The bitterness on his face was unmistakable.  "I was wrong."

"I thought I would be a hero; literally unmasking this group that had its claws deep within Magnimarian society.  Instead," his face crumpled, "I became the villain.  I'm so sorry," he said, tears welling up in his milky-white eyes.  "So sorry for what I've done."  He ended with a whisper.

"They abducted my Iesha.  Told me the only way I'd ever see her again is if I did their bidding.  They made me eat some of that," he pointed to the fungus on the wall, "and my transformation began.  Soon after they took me upstairs to see her."  His voice was ragged.  "Or what she had become."

"I am sorry for what I did."  This to Liseth.  "You reminded me so much of her, and I had already learned of her abduction.  He is fixated on you.  I don't know why.  I believe this is yours."  He pointed to a white, horse-shaped figurine on his desk.  "I don't know why he does anything he does."

"I have," his words became more labored, "documents they have not found.  I don't think.  From my investigation.  In my townhouse . . . Magnimar."  He touched a ring of two keys on his desk.  "These . . . give access.  But don't . . ."

Aldern suddenly broke into a wide grin, and slowly stood, yanking the knife from his hand and throwing it onto the table.  "I wonder," he said, in a deeper, easier, resonant voice, free of struggle, "how your deaths shall affect your friends.  What things might you have done that will go unfinished?  What will those broken promises spawn?  How will your murders shape the world?"  He laughed, then grabbed a wicked-looking war razor from the table.  "Let's find out, shall we?"

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

A frown of gnomish dissatisfaction darkened Pisca's face as her vision of Three Important and Life Revealing questions was reduced to a measly one.  She hissed and arched her back as Your Lordship emerged from the deformed body of Aldern Foxglove.  The fingers on one of the gnome's hands curled into a hooked claw with which she batted at the air releasing a tuft of cat fur in the process.

That pantomime fell away, then, leaving behind a more fluid and graceful Pisca who said in a reply that rose to match the cruelty and disdain of the thing inhabiting Aldern's body, "I wonder, how deeply the world will sigh in relief, once we have rid it of your stain."

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

The-thing-that-was-Aldern apparently found Pisca's remark humorous.  It began cackling, then threw its head back and roared with laughter.  Recovering, it moved forward slightly, leering at her with mad eyes.

"It would be a relief to them, wouldn't it?"  It wasn't quite clear if the thing was talking to Pisca or itself.  "Quite a relief!"  It tittered.  "Sadly for them, I have much staining to do yet."  The damaged, ruined face drained of humor.  "Starting with you."

It reached into a sack at its belt and pulled out a strange sort of headpiece; one that seemed to be made from preserved sections of human faces, draped over one another like scales.  The Aldern-creature raised the item and placed it on its head, creating a helm and mask that left only its eyes and mouth exposed; the effect was much like a scaled skull.  Aldern's head became insubstantial and shadowy, his scarred face fading behind the mask until only two glowing white eyes could be seen.

"You'll find that my stains, gnome," it lifted its war razor, "don't remove easily."

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Cato found his attention drifting from Aldern's increasingly villainous rant.  Instead, he found his gaze drifting over to the strange fungus.  Before his eyes, the pattern shifted, and swallowed his shadow, taking its shape as its own.  Cato shook his head, and the strange vision vanished, everything shifting back to normal.  Shaking his head, Cato returned his attention to the deadly encounter with the master Ghoul.

Taking a shaving of licorice root from his spell pouch, Cato uttered a single word: "[Language unknown: Wihoto!]"  There was a visible change as the outside world slowed down slightly, Aldern's motions seeming slowed and easier to predict.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Kerr's heart bled for Aldern Foxglove.  What must it be like to have your family ripped away from you not once but twice by the same evil group, and then be forced to serve them as an undead villain?

He couldn't imagine.

But now was not the time for mercy.  Or maybe it was; could there be anything more merciful than putting Lord Foxglove out of the misery he was in right now?  Using the power of Cato's magical stimulant, he sent three arrows speeding rapid-fire towards their undead foe.  One of them found the mark, burying itself almost unnoticed into the creature's thigh.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

It was true!  Not in the exact way that she had imagined it, but it was true; Aldern Foxglove had become the monstrous killer responsible for so much terror and death.  Against his own will...it was awful.

"But..." Before she could form anything to say, Liseth was cut off by Foxglove's transformation.  As bad as he looked, an even more horrible creature took his place.  Suddenly, the magic from Cato suffused her and her reflexes triggered a double shot of bolts from her crossbow.

As the projectiles screamed across the room, the acolyte took a step backward.  He had said that this...monster was infatuated with her.  The last thing she wanted was to let it get close!

Whoosh, thunk, thunk.  The quick pink gnome picked up the glitch in the pattern.  There are times when what you perceived as right was not as important as what you perceived as wrong.  Pisca reached out to pluck at the strings of reality, turning a Whoosh into a Thunk.  Wind to Percussion.  It sounded better to the gnome's ear.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Pisca uttered her arcane words just in time.  Kellan altered his swing at the last possible second; while he didn't strike a direct strike on Foxglove with the blade, he did give the creature a solid blow to the head with the shaft, nearly knocking it to the ground.

As he did so, arrows and bolts flew in from Kerr and Liseth, but they didn't seem to do more than slightly annoy their ghoulish opponent.

Snarling, the-thing-in-Foxglove's-body used the impetus from Kellan's hit to spin closer to Liseth, swinging its deathly-sharp war razor at her with what seemed like impossible precision.  The strike hit her directly in the chest, nearly tearing through her armor, and knocked the wind out of her as she stumbled backwards, trying to protect herself from its ferocious assault.

"Finally!"  The undead hissed.  "Finally you will be mine!"

Fortunately for her the brutal strike seemed to over-excite her assailant, and it missed her with both its teeth and its claws.  But the ghoul continued to follow up, seemingly determined to press its advantage . . .

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Cato and Pisca harried Aldern with their weapons, trying to distract him from Liseth or give Kellan an opening.  And they were successful!  Kellan's polearm skimmed past Aldern's leg, forcing the creature to leap aside or lose it.  It took pressure off of Liseth and allowed Kerr to draw another arrow.

But just like that, the undead noble was back, cat-quick reflexes at odds with the myths and legends the group had heard about slow, shambling undead.  Aldern's war axe crunched into the side of Kerr's breastplate just as the young paladin's arrow grazed the ghast's face.  Undeterred, Kerr fired another arrow at Foxglove, burying it in his shoulder.

But the shaft had no obvious affect on their former benefactor.  He turned back to Liseth with a snarl, swiping at her with the war axe and biting ineffectually before connecting with his claw.  Aldern shrieked in pain as a white flash of positive energy burned him, but not before he introduced his ghoulish poison into her system, once again forcing the young blonde into a state of temporary paralysis . . .

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

"Hang on, Lysa.  This evil scum can't last much longer."

"Hit him again, Stomper," she whispered.  With a few sideways steps Pisca placed herself between the ghoul and her guardsman friend.  She lashed out with her sword again, the blade neatly rapping against the undead's saggy bottom.

"Say goodbye to Aldern for us, Your Lordship," she said, though the quip was flat and filled with the serious and the sad.  "I think he's suffered enough now."

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Life and Death.  Two opposites drawn together in the person of Aldern Foxglove.  The noble's face contorted with some combination of rage and desire as he continued to press his attack on Liseth to the exclusion of anything else.  He didn't notice the polearm strikes from Kellan, or Kerr's arrow shafts.  He was focused completely on the shining acolyte.

The battle proceeded in what seemed an unusual quiet.  The clang of the ghast's war razor off Kerr's breastplate was surprising for its resounding rarity; the rest of the battle took place to the relatively-muted accompaniment of heavy breathing, grunts, snarls, and the soft impact of weapons on flesh.

It was Kellan who struck the final blow.  Foxglove's complete disinterest in defending himself against the young guardsman proved his undoing; the blade of Kellan's polearm sunk deep into the creature's neck, driving him to the ground.

As he fell to his knees, whatever unlife had animated Foxglove's body seemed to seep out of him.  His preternatural vigor disappeared; in its place was an ineffable sadness.  The rage left the man's eyes as he slumped to the floor, replaced with a sorrow that tore at the heart.

But upon seeing Liseth, his pall lifted.  From his knees, he reached one clawed hand towards her, a beatific smile on his face.  "Iesha," he said, tears of joy streaming down his face.  "You've come back to me, sweetheart.  How I've missed you."  His breath caught.  "Oh, how I've missed you."

Then he slumped to the floor, dead.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Cato gave a sigh of relief as Aldern slumped to the ground, lifeless.  "Is it over?"  He looked to each of his comrades, making sure they were still on their feet, his reactions still heightened by the effects of his spell.

Cato looked around the room, first towards the fungal growth on the wall, to see if Aldern's defeat had any effect on it.

Examine fungal wall growth.

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

*Sigh* the gnome sighed and lowered to her knees.  Without the hesitation born of fear or revulsion, she placed a gentle hand upon the crumpled form that was once Aldern Foxglove.

"I think he wanted to die," Pisca said, in a voice quiet and funereal.  "We have to take him with us.  And maybe find Iesha as well.  Bury them together.  Away from this place."  Her nose then wrinkled.  She let her face sag a bit, showing the pain and weariness inflicted upon her by this cursed place, and she added, "Despite the smell."

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

“I think so,” Kerr replied to Cato, kneeling thoughtfully next to Pisca to regard the body of Aldern Foxglove.  “And I think you’re right too, Pisca.  He was gradually being eaten from inside by whatever that thing was.  Now he’s gone to his reward.  May the gods show him mercy.”  Kerr made a ritual sign over the dead body.  “For this world surely didn’t.”

He put an encouraging hand on the gnome’s shoulder.  “I think burying them together is an excellent idea.  Far, far away from this place.”

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

Cato turned from his examination of the fungus to the rest of the room.  His gaze moved over the shards of broken detritus on the floor.  Suddenly, a flash of recognition came to his mind.  "The floor...there's pieces of a puzzle box shown in the stained glass upstairs.  Vorel must have built his box to obtain lichdom.  But I don't think it worked.  That should have become his phylactery, not shattered.  And that's what's probably causing all this.  We need to undo whatever happened when his phylactery was destroyed."

Know: Arcana on how exactly to accomplish that?
Would something like Dispel Magic be enough?  Or would we need something else, like Consecrate?

"That's . . . that's the result of a lich-making ritual gone wrong?"  Kerr thought for a moment.  "It's . . . that explains a lot.  He was down here performing the ritual, something went awry, and now he's," the young paladin's eyes widened, "now he's haunting the house!  Everything we've seen!  I'll bet they're manifestations of his spirit."

He looked around nervously.  "We need to consecrate this place as soon as we can.  But I'm not sure we have the ability right now."

Book 2, Chapter #2:  To the Manor Borne

"Rest," Pisca said to the body that was once Aldern Foxglove.  She gave the cold dead thing a gentle pat before rising to her feet.

"Alright, so what do we consecrate this place with?" she asked.  "Maybe there's something around here?  Maybe ... just maybe ... " the gnome added, "Vorel left something around that would just do the trick."  She began poking into corners and such even as she wracked her brain for a solution.  "Maple syrup," Pisca speculated.  "What do you think?  Consecration by maple syrup?"

Knowledge Religion and Knowledge Arcana, please.  To know how to exorcise the Haunted Mansion.

Pisca Neep Freemish rolled 26.  Perception to search the room.
