Major Religions of Aeryis

The immortals of this world are diverse and powerful beings, but what makes them interesting is that they are far from passive. Clergy have tremendous power so long as they retain the favor of their patron, and though the gods themselves rarely deign to walk the world in person, they are nonetheless present in the wars, politics, and discussions that take place throughout Aeyris. While the Southlands have an approved list of gods and goddesses that have been referred to as the Nebulous Divinity, but there is no sign that the gods themselves have drawn such distinctions between themselves.

The Pantheon of Aeyris

Good Gods

Tassada, Flame of Justice - Law Domain, Fire Domain, Good Domain, Liberation Domain

Tassada is the patron of any who work toward true justice in Aeyris. Her avatar is that of a high elf, and her sign is that of a tongue of flame surrounding a scale. Ironically, her name is most often invoked by those working toward a skewed kind of justice that favors one group over another, but only those who truly understand the meaning of justice are granted the ability to channel her divine power. Tassada is Lawful Good and will not accept any with evil or chaos in their hearts as representatives of her church. Tassada’s favored weapon is the warhammer.

Hort, the Enduring Sentinel - Strength Domain, Protection Domain, Earth Domain, Artifice Domain

Hort is the patron of any who value strength and determination. His avatar is that of a dwarf, and his sign is that of a fist clenched tightly around a boulder. Worshipers of Hort tend to be disciplined and physically fit, and they usually have an appreciation for the value of simple things. Hort is Neutral Good and does not discriminate against any but the most wicked. Hort’s favored weapon is the spiked shield.

Rachelle, Lady of the Tides - Water Domain, Air Domain, Weather Domain

Rachelle is the patron of the seas, rains, and winds. Her avatar is that of a slender human with long tresses of dark hair streaked with blond strains – lightning in the midst of a dark bank of clouds. Her sign is a storm crow, wings outstretched and talons raised above a rising wave. Worshipers of Rachelle seek to learn more about the mysteries surrounding floods, hurricanes, tidal waves, windstorms, and lightning, and all share her love of the sea. Rachelle is Chaotic Good and harbors no love for being with darkness in their hearts. Her favored weapon is the barbed whip.

Neutral Gods

Tyblin, Wandering Lord of Fortune and Adventure - Luck Domain, Travel Domain, Nobility Domain

Tyblin is the patron of those who suffer from wanderlust and sticky fingers. His avatar is that of a gnome, and his sign is a ragged map covered with scattered coins and X’s. Bards and rogues feel particularly drawn to his presence, praying that he will favor their journeys with riches and glory. Tyblin is Chaotic Neutral and allows any who wish it to follow his path. Tyblin’s favored weapon is the quarterstaff.

Cenadora, Mystic Mistress of Magic - Magic Domain, Community Domain, Creation Domain

Cenadora is the patron of mysteries and magic. Her avatar is that of a strong, athletic human with strawberry blond hair, and her sign is that of a silver cloud with a single eye in the center. Worshipers of Cenadora are generally researching the secrets of magic and hoping to learn something more from the synthesis of magic and divine energy that she represents. Cenadora is Lawful Neutral, open to any who earnestly follow her and support her church’s values. Her favored weapon is the mind, and as such her followers are allowed no other form of protection.

Ignati, the Golden Muse of Inspiration - Knowledge Domain, Healing Domain, Rune Domain

Ignati is the patron of song, music, knowledge, and restoration. His avatar is that of an ancient elf of unknown origin and his sign is that of a spiraling quill. Worshipers of Ignati truly believe that knowledge is power, and trust in the wisdom of the past to bring them through the present. Ignati is True Neutral. His favored weapon is the cudgel, the perfect combination of simplicity and usefulness.

Le’lothriel, Defender of the Natural World - Plant Domain, Sun Domain, Animal Domain

Le’lothriel is the patron of nature, animals, plants, and the sun. Her avatar is that of a young wood elf, and her sign is that of an oak leaf. Worshipers of Le’lothriel share an unparalleled love and respect for nature. They believe in the circle of life and that all are connected as one together, and they also believe that this delicate balance is threatened by the encroachment of all things unnatural. Le’lothriel is Chaotic Neutral, and will allow no being bound by the laws of man to intrude upon her sacred rituals. Her favored weapon is the longbow.

Darilen, Keeper of the Damned - Chaos Domain, Death Domain, Darkness Domain

Darilen is that patron of death and darkness. His avatar is that of a cloaked figure shrouded in shadow, and his sign is a full solar eclipse. Worshipers of Darilen welcome death, accepting it as the inevitable end of existence as well as a short-term solution to various problems they might have with living individuals. Darilen is Chaotic Neutral, but does not discriminate against his worshipers. Death eventually claims all equally. His favored weapon is the scythe.

Evil Gods

Vora, Oblivion’s Herald - War Domain, Destruction Domain, Chaos Domain

Vora is the patron of destruction, conflict, and battle. Her avatar is that of an onyx golem, and her sign is a smoldering crater. Worshipers of Vora delight in conflict and mindless destruction, but know that all of this has a greater purpose – extinction. The church of Vora is dedicated to flattening all who oppose the wonton destruction of whatever, whenever. Vora is Lawful Evil, but this is tempered by the fact that devotes are taught to accept no authority save that of the church and its mission. To that end, most people view Vora's followers as chaotic. Her favored weapon is the greatsword.

Kazul, Dragonlord of Ambition - Strength Domain, Fire Domain, Glory Domain, Evil Domain

Kazul is the patron of ambition, greed, power, and wealth. His avatar is that of a black dragon, and his sign is a coiled serpent. Worshipers of Kazul seek their own advancement at any cost, and recognize the inherent joys that come with owning property and station. Kazul is Neutral Evil, as sometimes the only way to advance in life is to bend the rules. His favored weapon is the battleaxe.

Bevenglode, the Mad Jester of Blood - Trickery Domain, Luck Domain, Madness Domain, Charm Domain

Bevenglode is the patron of illusion, deception, lies, pain, and blood. His avatar is that of a dark elf, and his sign is a bloodshot eye. Worshipers of Bevenglode tend to be dark bards, rogues, or assassins, but the church is open to anyone with a love of inflicting pain through fooling others. Bevenglode is Chaotic Evil, and will let anyone who wills it attempt to join his church – should that person prove unable to handle the pressures associated with worship, the problem tends to resolve itself with their death. His favored weapon is the dagger.

In reply to Zuriel Silendril (msg # 5):

The Rumored Lost Gods of Aeryis

Cedrik, Lord of Balance
Presumed to be the God of Balance and Neutrality, worshiped by at least one strange old man who seems learned and a powerful knight standing sentry over a Feyic Vault. Nikos the Stormbreaker is his First, and Drexler remains his paladin. It is assumed such a god, were he to exist, would beckon to True Neutral souls. His domains and area of influence is unknown, and perhaps mythical or nonexistent.  His symbol is a perfect yin-yang.

Ma'or, the Lady Love
Presumed to be the Goddess of Passion (but not lust), Love (but not desire), Light, and Purity of Spirit. Her banner is purported to be a pure white field upon which rests a pastel pink heart from which beams of light emanate. Presumed to be good.

Kà, the Eternal Maw
Presumed to be the God of Hunger, Smarm, and Blandishment, the Devourer is said to be evil as all get-out. His banner is purported to be a silver circular serpent consuming its own tail set upon a deep crimson field.

Re: Major Religions of Aeryis

In reply to DM (msg # 6):

Evil Gods, from the vantage point of the South

"Worshipers of Vora boast of a divine mandate that has revealed to them the means by which the world must end, and the date on which it must come to pass. They have not deigned to share it, but nevertheless, the church of Vora is dedicated to preparing the world for its coming. The specifics generally involve destroying key buildings or populations or forests or what-have-you, all of which are dictated to them by the clergy and followed with absolute zeal. Most people view Vora's followers as chaotic, but they are absolutely unbending in their obedience to the church's law -- and turn a blind eye to all others."

"Worshipers of Kazul spare no expense to secure their own advancement, and recognize the inherent joys that come with owning property and station. They believe that might makes right, and that the natural world order involves the strong ruling over the weak. They obey the laws that are useful, and discard those that are not."

"Worshipers of Bevenglode understand that the world is a nasty place, and embrace that truth as an opportunity. There is a demand for assassins, thieves, spies, and smugglers, and so there must be a supply. Followers of Bevenglode delight in the art of illusion and trickery, and believe life should be fun, profitable, and care-free -- while it lasts. Pain has a special place in the church, for to control a man's pain is to control the man himself. It is said every follower of Bevenglode must tithe a portion of blood to the church on the day they join it, 'to give Bevenglode his due'."

Re: Major Religions of Aeryis

In reply to DM (msg # 7):

Eat, Pray, Love

The minstrel boy to war is gone
In the ranks of Death will you find him
His father's sword he has girded on
His wild harp slung behind him

Land of Song, quoth the warrior bard
Though all the world betrays thee
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard
One faithful harp shall praise thee

He tunes his harp and spews the tale
Now known as Eat, Pray, Love
A ballad with five parts -- none stale
About the gods above

First he speaks, in reverent tones
Of the glutton, Ká the Sly
The most cunning misdirector known
The Lord of Feasts and Lies

Cedrick, next, is introduced
The Gray, the Fulcrum's Edge
Whose life's a living hell-on-Prime;
The Balance is his pledge

The third position goes unnamed
The savage Primal Voice
Plants and beasts are its domains
Though neither had a choice

Cendora is the fourth
She rules both books and spells
No weaponry permitted she
To those her favor dwelled

Last and least, he names Ma'or
The Lady Love, naive
Whose goal of hugging every cat
Has left the others peeved

Thus the pantheon was declared
Five on an even keel
Two each for Law and Chaos, paired
With one Good and one Evil

Three there were of neutral bent
Of which one was absolute
And so decision-making went
A democratic route

Until one day, conniving Ká
Took the Primal Voice aside
"Ma'or and 'Dora hate your flaws
They will replace you, friend," he lied.

"They've tapped a lass," continued Ká
"Her name's Le'lothriel.
We must do something -- set our jaw
Or they'll replace me, as well."

The Voice, now baited, hook and line
Unleashed a feral growl
"We must away to Cedrick's shrine
To stop this plot most foul."

But Ká held up a graceful hand
To keep his hound at bay
"Cedrick will just have them banned;
I know another way."

Together, Voice and Ká went forth
Among the mortal fold
Seeking south, east, west, and north
For minds sharp and bodies bold

They found a girl with eyes a'flame
And a dwarf of bulky build
They found a maid with storm-tossed mane
And a gnome whom wanderlust had filled

They found an elf, shriveled and wracked
And a man they cloaked with night
They found a dragon hatchling, black
And an elf who wasn't right

Then they built their final offering,
A golem strong and tall
Made of unrelenting onyx
The most powerful of all

They gave them names you've never heard
Tassada, Hort, Rachelle
I swear, the list goes on and on
I'll spare you the details

"As you know, in Cedrick's shrine
There lies an ancient pool
That's used to make mundane, divine,"
Ká said. The Voice just drooled.

"But you and I are gods in full,"
The Voice said with a frown.
"The pool is useless to us, Ká,
Who already know renown."

"That's why we found the mortals, fool,"
Ká groused and patiently explained
"Those set aside will be our tools,
To keep treachery at bay."

"Once a sip they've tasted,"
the Lord of Lies implied
"They'll form a second tier of gods
To serve us at our side."

Thus through the plans of Ká the Plotter
Nine newcomers were empowered
Eight from drinking stolen water
And the golem, which they showered

When next the Five were set to meet
Ká and Voice came not alone
But at the head of nine new gods
To stand before the throne

"Fie upon Le'lothriel!"
The Primal Voice said with a cry
"You dare to try to replace me?
You'll choke upon your pride."

Ma'or and Cenadora, who
In truth had no such plan
Glanced at each other and then drew
Themselves up to the man.

"We knowest not of whom you speak,"
Cenadora said at last
"But who are these, now at our feet?
What dice have you just cast?"

"The lie again, and to your face,"
Ká crowed with boyish glee.
"They won't admit they would replace
All Nature's deity."

"What's done is done," another said
'Twas Cedrick's measured drawl
His visage mixed both strength and dread
As he worked to stop a brawl

"But actions carry consequences,
More than you might intend."
Your theft erodes my confidence;
This can't occur again."

"Thus I shall invite this lass,
Le'lothriel, you said, again?
To drink freely from my glass
And bring this lot to ten."

"Now, since planes on which we trod
Are not meant to sustain
So many vibrant, newfound gods
Not all can now remain."

Cedrick sighed and closed his eyes
"We Five must needs be three
Two must take their final dive
Into eternity."

"I volunteer." This, from Ma'or
"I'll save one from this fate."
Cedrick nodded, "And I'm one more.
One last burden for my plate."

But Cenadora, sick and floored
Narrowed now her eyes
"The cost's too high. The fault's not yours.
'Tis with the Lord of Lies."

The Goddess glared, "What say you, Ká?
The onus falls on you"
"You want to sacrifice my maw?"
The glutton crowed, amused.

In the end, with much debate
The Five reached an accord
Four from time and space would fade
And eleven would be adored

Each of the chosen four were sealed
In sword, in space, in stone, in staff
The fifth was Cenadora
Who watched all on their behalf

The Faithful of the four worked long
And hard to find a way
To resurrect their gods, who'd gone
They're trying still, today

And one such method, never tested
Lies buried in the sand
In the wind-swept dunes of Gaelia
A hot and hostile land.

Thus the bard completes his tale
And thus the story ends
Of genesis, of gods and men
And of dangers they portend.
