They are about 100 yards away as the crow flies, but there is a large dune between the portal and the shallower valley where they are standing.

To all the ghost-related snarkery:

The Ghosts, like the CIA, would prefer to find their own missions. If a rank-and-file citizen wants the CIA to look into something, it requires a lengthy and absurdly stupid bureaucratic process. An esteemed general would have a much easier time, to be sure, but it still isn't the same as ordering a pizza or even a police officer to your doorstep.

You can move anywhere you want. The lighter-colored spots are the "Active Room". The blue spots are the hallway. The lighter-colored spots have a border around them. If the colors are making things confusing I can yank them out, but I thought highlighting the room everyone was in by shading it differently than the rest of the dungeon would be helpful.

I believe a total of 4 were killed:

1x by Maeve in the hallway
1x by Lyriel near the ladder (this one's a charred ruin and unusable)
2x by the PARTY in the scales room. The fire wall ate away all of one but his head, which Sgt. Akkar sliced off. The other one was entirely burned to a crisp.

Zuriel used the wrists of the one in the hallway, I've deemed, to power the scale, which means that Maeve is now carrying around a head, which is covered by a chitinous facemask and helmet.

We might give Keef a ring.  It would make sense for him to do the honors.  If a fight were to break out, who could we best do without?  I'd say either Boreas or Zuriel.  Boreas has more reliable damage and battlefield control, but Zuriel is a backup healer and more durable.  He's also got strong damage potential if we face an evil outsider.

Thoughts?

So I was under the impression that mortals could still go, but were subject to hightened danger. In that case it would make sense for Zuriel to do without, hands down. He has the heart of a goddess around his neck, and the closest thing to immortal blood.

If you have to have a ring to even go in though, Zuriel needs to be there. The whole reason for him agreeing to this was to find some way to resurrect Ma'or in the temple.

Let's start assuming it's the former. Zuriel will offer to give Keef his ring, though would like to borrow Keef's negative energy ring temporarily if he is to do without.

There wasn't nearly enough concern on Zuriel's part.  Zuriel was WAAAAAAAAAYYYY more concerned about Trish, a character that had exactly one line and that the rest of us never actually met.

Re: OOC Discussion #3

This seems as good a time as any to outline Maeve's Last Will & Testament.  It's pretty straightforward:

1. The P.A.R.T.Y may divvy up Maeve's belongings as they see fit, with the caveat that Boreas gains custody of the griffon given that he has the best rapport with animals.

2. The P.A.R.T.Y must solemnly swear to continue Maeve's quest to murder Shoes Lady.  Preferably, make sure she suffers a little first.

Also, slight note on buffs: turns out Bull's Strength and similar spells don't stack with stat-boosting items.  Best change those out if you have them prepared.

Enlarge Person, however, does stack its bonus to strength with boosting items because it's a size bonus and not an enhancement bonus.  Not particularly relevant this fight, but good to know in the future.

So it seems to me that the 'main plot' currently involves the Chainbreakers. The only entities we have seen with acceess to that type of magic are the Order and the OSA. If either of them are moving against the PARTY, that's bad news bears, especially if they're using a slave revolt to sow confusion/gain cheap manpower.

Zuriel has to go resurrect Ma'or though. He can't put that off, as he was given a direct command by the Eternal Council.

Looks like we're gonna split the P.A.R.T.Y., which will be handled by chunking this chapter into sub chapters.

1) Maeve, Boreas, and (maybe) Keef will stay in the current thread, as they are following the main plot line.

2) Lyriel's story will be told in the existing thread about the letter she received from Ká

3) Zuriel's story will be told in a new thread I'll add similar to the one Lyriel will be using.

There will likely be swathes of time hand-waved using the Choose Your Own Adventure format we played around with during the war chapters, but I'll slow it down when it suits the story, too.

Eventually we'll reconvene, depending of course on the choices you've made and your ability to not die horribly in the interim.

Eeeek, I somehow accidentally marked Rpol related messages as spam sometime on THursday and logged in this morning to find about a bazillion new messages.  Not my ignoring you, just didn't think there was anything actually happening.

I probably do actually want to retroactively take action to some stuff that happened on Thursday and Friday. So before I proceed with whatever the hell we're doing I guess I'd like the following cleared up:

1. Did I find out any information about what's going on in the north that requires Dad's attention?

2. Does the Primal Voice require Boreas' presence at the moment?

3. I am not really overly concerned about loot as we have more than enough for travel expenses.

4. Fine Zuriel, I'll see what's bugging my new friend Sgt. Akkar before he takes his leave.

Awesome, in response to the latter Maeve will assure him that he acquitted himself well and was, after all, the only one of the soldiers to volunteer to join them inside the scary temple so no harm done at all etc etc.  Hell she'll even provide a glowing letter of recommendation.

But that's ALL Magee.

Honestly, as far as collecting information goes, talking to crickets, worms, etc. would be pretty worthless.

Even if a cricket, say, lived on the King's head, he wouldn't be able to focus on, hear or even understand anything that's going on so he'd be a pretty useless spy.

If we assume crickets have the same visual/auditory perceptions as humans and can understand not only human speech but human concepts etc. then we have MUCH bigger problems than spying...

Ok, here's the plan... just want to check if it's even a thing that can be done:

There's some sort of small shed or building/wall cover in the apiary?  Then here's the plan.

1.  Walk out of view behind/inside the building/wall/cover
2. Have Lillian crouch next to Keef so she's hiding under his robes with him and, ideally, all you'd see if you walked in is robes with people doing 'something' underneath.
3. Cast Mislead with illusion on top of Keef.
4. Polymorph Lillian into a bee.
5. Cast Dimension Door or Teleport (based on range) to get to the Gate with bee in tow.  This leaves illusion of keef/Lillian/robes behind.
6. Walk through gate while invisible and with bee Lillian.
7. Possible enemies focus on illusion of Keef/Lillian/robes.
8. When illusion vanishes, possible enemies look foolish.
9. We win.
10. Profit.

Re: OOC Discussion #3

In reply to DM (msg # 220):

A few of you have reached out to me over the last few weeks (years, really) to ask about rebalancing the way HP works in this campaign. In particular, there have been requests for a 1/2HD + 1 + CON system, instead of my current 1/2HD + CON or "roll for it" system. The end result of rebalancing HP values would be a buff for most (but not all) of you, and would create a design space that may yield more favorable encounters.

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts about such a system before I commit to it one way or the other. The end result would change HP totals to the following:

Keef:    57
Boreas:  86
Lyriel:  101
Maeve:   130
Raziel:  144

I look forward to hearing your commentary on this. Thanks!

I prefer it, rather vastly, over the current system.  Even for characters who lose a few HP, it offers a more reliable HP progression in the future, not trusting the PC's long-term survivability to the roll of a die.  And like you said, it closes the HP gap a little so you're better able to balance encounters.

You know my full thoughts on the subject. I support this 100%

TL;DR,

I think this is a better system for a story-centric campaign with heavy character investment.

As a player, I dread rolling for HP, but felt compelled to do so under the old system because math.

I think this lets you as a DM more effectively tune encounters to appropriately threaten us based on role.

Roger Ebert gives this two thumbs way up.

Fair enough:

Jon:

It saves time to not have to roll a die, I guess.  I agree that steady progression is nice and less prone to goofiness with bad/good luck.  That being said, at least based on my understanding of the past battles in this campaign, our performance has been much more a factor of things like immunities, buffs, etc. than HP.

Thus I like it because it sounds simpler, but I don't feel like it will affect much so I don't particularly mind either way.  I'm always in favor of GMs adapting the rules to the demands of the campaign and players, so count me as a soft "go for it".

Keef:

I get more hit points!  Yay!

Chubbs:

Pish, who needs HP when you're a toad?  It's a waste of time to track the numbers associated with your natural inferiority.

Also I don't care and wasn't paying attention.

Re: OOC Discussion #3

In reply to Keef (msg # 262):

Ok, so... WTF, ZURIEL?!

I've gotten a lot of pings about this, and since Zuriel's controller is on the road, I figured I'd clarify a few things.

quote:
FAQ

Q. DIDN'T HE DIE?
A. Yes.

Q. AND YET HERE HE IS.
A. Yes.

Q. WTF?
A. Zuriel Silendril, the Highborn you've known and (in some cases) loved, is dead. He was completely annihilated when he passed through the gate to Ma'or, every cell atomized entirely such that no magic could ever restore him.

Q. AND YET HERE HE IS.
A. I'm getting to that. Though his body was destroyed, his soul was not. Typically souls would be drawn toward their final resting place, but this was far from a typical place for a soul to find itself immediately after being separated from its body. Thus Ma'or was able to isolate it and reward his sacrifice by forming a new body around it.

Q. BUT HE HAS WINGS.
A. These aren't questions. But yes, he does. The new body is a Celestial one, with many of the racial characteristics. You'll also notice he lost his surname. Zuriel is dead and gone, his memories a jumbled mess and his purpose different than before.

Q. HE REMEMBERED US JUST FINE. AND SEEMS TO HAVE THE SAME PERSONALITY.
A. There will be similarities, but trust me: Zuriel is dead. He remembers who he was and what he's done, but his perspective is different now. As is his Duty. There are times you'll see flashes of the old Zuriel in his actions, but there will be times where you see something altogether new, as well.

Q. SO IT COULD BE SAID THAT HE IS A NEW CHARACTER WITH A FAMILIAR NAME AND FACE?
A. Precisely.

Q. AND RAZIEL?
A. An NPC that I gave to Zuriel while the plot bubbled and boiled prior to his return to the party. He will shortly be reverted to an NPC under my control, and his text reverted from aqua to standard black.

Q. DOES SHAHARA HAVE WINGS NOW, TOO?
A. No. I remain a heartless GM regardless of his pleas to the contrary.

Q. EXCELLENT.
A. Quite.

I'll leave the other details for Zuriel to explain in-character after combat or on the road down the line, but I hope this helps for now. I know it feels like this "cheating of death" mitigates his sacrifice, and in a way you'd be right. But I assure you that Zuriel Silendril died that day in the Celestial Heavens, and that something new (but not altogether foreign) has risen to take his place.

If you have other questions, please post 'em and I'll do my best to answer. Thanks all!

If you manage to avoid killing yourselves with the siege engines -- which are lucky to hit a specific target at all -- it will be a miracle in and of itself.

We're talking about some variation of the Mangonel, which has a range of around 1300 feet in our world. The accuracy is greater than a Trebuchet but less than a Ballista. Choso may indeed have some variation of all three of these weapons on-hand, or at least have siege engineers capable of building/modifying them on the fly to suit the need.

Regardless, no siege weapon can reliably strike a stationary target from 1300 feet away, even a large one. They would routinely over- or under-shoot WALLS during their volleys.

I like the siege engine air support idea, don't get me wrong. But it's super dangerous and not a sure thing at all :P

That is correct. So long as nothing you do affects positioning of something the person in front of you wanted to do, you can go in any order.

If you had a "move dragon 100 feet to the left" spell, though, you might wanna wait until folks in front of you did something to use it. Or talk about doing it OOC with the understanding that this is a tactic you'd discussed as a group before. Or just do it, because random tactical shifts are awesome.

Sure thing!

To answer you question, potions are a "standard action" to apply, so while you can apply it and move (and/or have the mount move), you don't get another action with which to attack.

Worth noting, if the party has multiple turns one after another, it's totally ok to take your action before your ally would. I would still check with them first to make sure there weren't gonna do something that would have interfered with your strategy if another player was set to go before you, but in this format it makes sense to allow folks to post when they have time, barring enemy action in between.

Rock on!

Sorry for delays. Trying to do 2 weeks of work in 3 days.

I'll be back with a vengeance after that, though. I've been looking forward to this arc and what comes next for almost two years :)

Updates!

1) Guardhouse combat is currently to Keef.

2) RE: Maeve's question, you can hack through 3 of the 12 dudes, so 1/4 of the troops in one go, yes. Or 1/3 if you're counting damaging the Sergeant in that. Now that we're in combat, however, you may find that the arrows are slightly more accurate :)

Question for Maeve: Do you have a ride-by attack feat or something that's allowing you to move, attack, then move again? Or are you just hovering 10 feet out?

Well I have spring attack as a feat, which lets me do pretty much that exactly.  I'd been operating under the assumption that the same idea translates to mounted combat as well but if you deem it not so, then let's just say that I'm hovering like 10 feet up as you suggested.

Re: OOC Discussion #3

In reply to Maeve Hassan (msg # 379):

I think the mounted equivolant of Spring Attack is Flyby Attack, which is a feat you'd already have if you took the Gaelian Griffinrider prestige class I pitched you a while back (check PM thread for details).

Here are the details of mounted combat (and ignore the DC 5 Ride check, since you can't possibly fail it):

quote:
Combat while Mounted

With a DC 5 Ride check, you can guide your mount with your knees so as to use both hands to attack or defend yourself. This is a free action.

When you attack a creature smaller than your mount that is on foot, you get the +1 bonus on melee attacks for being on higher ground. If your mount moves more than 5 feet, you can only make a single melee attack. Essentially, you have to wait until the mount gets to your enemy before attacking, so you can’t make a full attack. Even at your mount’s full speed, you don’t take any penalty on melee attacks while mounted.

If your mount charges, you also take the AC penalty associated with a charge. If you make an attack at the end of the charge, you receive the bonus gained from the charge. When charging on horseback, you deal double damage with a lance.

You can use ranged weapons while your mount is taking a double move, but at a -4 penalty on the attack roll. You can use ranged weapons while your mount is running (quadruple speed), at a -8 penalty. In either case, you make the attack roll when your mount has completed half its movement. You can make a full attack with a ranged weapon while your mount is moving. Likewise, you can take move actions normally.

So it looks like if you're using your mount to move more than 5 feet, you only get a single attack (just as if you yourself have moved more than 5 feet). If you want to hover near the wall and mow folks down, though, I'm cool with that. And I'm willing to be wrong about this if Chris wants to chime in to clarify.

In reply to Maeve Hassan (msg # 381):

Chatted with Chris about this, and it seems you have a couple options:

1) You can move (or double move!) with the griffin and go wherever you want, buzzing the walls or whatnot. But if you do this, you can only attack once (and it can't be whirlwind).

2) You can just sort of plant yourself on or near the wall and get your normal attack and/or whirlwind

These guys are mooks so you'll probably be ok in the short term. In the long term, though, I must warn you that a horde of dudes is eventually going to roll enough natural 20s to bring even the gods to their knees.

Choice is yours!

Would there be interest in handling this as a Choose Your Own Adventure-style series of updates instead of a traditional dungeon crawl? The pacing's a little off right now, and I'm wondering if that might fix it so things remain interesting at a decent clip as we progress through the cathedral WITHOUT taking control away from ya'll. It would be a little different than the last time because you'd all have to vote on/agree on a course of action before we can proceed (last time you each got to make decisions independent of the group). If Rome was already surrounded and burning, and there were no 'police' to wait for? I think you would find that a trying test of faith for all the the absolute most devout/brainwashed.

At any rate, at that point, it's their choice to stay and burn.

Your comparison to the Vatican isn't really all that valid either, unless you're talking about like Crusades-era Vatican. A better example might be the final bunker of Nazi Germany. If you were to storm that, I'm sure plenty of people would want to go down in flames with the rest of the Reich. Plenty more, however, would want to live.

As long is the choice is theirs to make, Auriel is fine with either decision.

I have no problem with you hurling Chubbs at your intended targets in order to fire off your familiar spellcasting feat. Against a dodging opponent you'd have to roll for your throwing ability, but in this case I'll allow you have simply done it by letting Chubbs help you "aim" his jump. Bravo.

It is worth noting that I don't think Maeve can actually benefit from Bulls strength, since it doesn't stack with the bonuses she already has from her magic items. Auriel is in the same position.

In reply to Auriel (msg # 439):

So... this is my bad.

Technically, no, Bull's Strength shouldn't stack in this scenario. If Keef would rather toss a different spell (like Haste or something) we can incorporate that into a revised roll for Maeve. If the change in strength would affect Maeve's power attack choices, we can have her re-roll entirely if she prefers.

So, two things needed here:

1) Keef, do you wanna replace that spell with another (and if so, which one)?
2) Once that revision (if any) is made, does Maeve want to re-take all or part of her turn?

Those who have not kept up with the Lyriel side arc might be confused by her recent appearance.

Long story short, events transpired which dumped her into the Hells, and she's been wandering around there ever since. During her travels she located a strange, forboding structure and was drawn toward it.

Imagine her surprise when, shortly after entering the building, she found the scene of your current battle unfolding in real time.

There are more satisfying explanations in store in the future, but for now, rest assured that this isn't Dues Ex, I promise!

There's also a cloak of resistance +3 and an amulet of CON +4.

I think the current plan, barring objections, is for Lyriel to take the cloak and Maeve to take the necklace.

After upgrading, that leaves an amulet of CON +2, a Cloak of Resistance +1, and an Amulet of Natural Armor +3 up for grabs.

If Keef or Boreas don't need them, we can give them to Miss Redshirt to make the DM work harder to kill her.

As soon as the fire shield goes away, the fire *resistance* kicks in, reducing this and all future fire damage by 30 per source. So in this case, the shield is depleted, the remainder is nullified by the resistance, and you take no net damage.

Then, going forward, all future sources of fire damage deal 30 less.

The CYOA segment is continuing to go strong, though we'll soon be in a place where it makes sense to merge everything once more and have the final battle. You'll all be raised to epic (20) prior to that, if that gives you anything to look forward to :)

Re: OOC Discussion #3

In reply to DM (msg # 505):

For anyone who has been crit by the walls of text we've endured recently, here's a brief synopsis of what's going on in a easy-to-read, barebones timeline:

quote:
1) Kazul dies

2) Everyone disperses through various portals to various planes

3) The planes all violently merge together with Prime

4) Big black hole in the sky with lots of debris and stuff swirling into it

5) Black hole threatens to destroy everything that's left, too

6) Since all the planes have merged, all the gods are on the same plane

7) The black hole probably leads to Vora

8) All gods were destroyed in the merge except: Ka, Primal Voice, Cenadora, Tassada, Ma'or, and Cedrick

9) Gods can't enter the black hole without being destroyed

10) Nobody really knows what to do

Everyone's individual plot points sort of relates to the chaos of the merger and ultimately leads them toward one or more gods on Prime. Interacting with them will help move the plot forward toward the inevitable final attempt to seal the black hole and save the world.

Some initiative jumping occurred here, so I wanted to clarify what's needed at the moment.

Mechanically speaking, the upcoming initiative order looks like this:

quote:
Boreas/Maeve/Keef (in any order)
NEW ROUND
Vora (stunned)
Auriel (locked initiative here)
Lyriel (locked intitiative here)
STUN ENDS
Finwe/Boreas/Maeve/Keef (in any order)
NEW ROUND
(Back to normal initiative order)

TLDR: Vora will be essentially helpless until Lyriels' next action ends, and everyone will get exactly one turn to interact with "stunned Vora" before normal combat resumes. Unless you kill her before then. Good luck!

Drinking from the soul well will make you fledgling gods. If your character is mature enough to recognize this as the burden it is, but remains unwilling to shoulder it, that is an entirely valid perspective and reaction. You do not all need to ascend to godhood if you do not think that would be interesting, fun, appropriate, in character, or for any other reason :)

I will say that it may be possible for any divine powers you accumulate to be discharged, transferred, or suppressed if a more temporary stewardship holds more appeal to you.

Aaron, given our recent election I think it's safe to say that being qualified for a position of high leadership is not necessarily a requirement.

I think that Maeve's decision was in character.  I hope so, at any rate, as I truly meant it to be.

And yes, that *is* a quote from "Hook" in her little speech.  Bite me.

On a more serious note: I'm sure it's the last thing anyone wants to do while we're on the cusp of wrapping up a 3+ year campaign, but I would absolutely be down for another Rpol game in the future.  As anyone who has ever played tabletop D&D with me knows, I am heartbreakingly bad at roleplaying and making in-character decisions on the spot.  There's lots of hemming and hawing and "I don't know guys, what SHOULD I do?"  Being able to reflect upon my response and edit it before deciding has been a godsend.

Now hurry up and break your stupid barrier so I can post my capstone piece.

I will run another 3.5 game only on the following conditions:

quote:
1) It takes place in this world, post-apocalypse, a few thousand years down the road.

2) All of the PCs belong to an organization called The Cult of Chubbs

3) The overall goal is to explore the myth that an ocean of potential power -- enough to rival that of all of the gods combined -- lurks behind a barrier in the depths of the forbidden Soul Well.

ALL WILL BOW BEFORE THE MIGHT OF THE HYPNOTOAD.

But seriously, I'd prefer a non-3.5 system because yes. Those stacked modifiers are ridiculous.

In reply to Maeve Hassan (msg # 603):

Looking forward to meeting her!

For the curious, I have used the forbidden magic of Redactamancy to adjust the story of the survivors slightly.

You can re-read the monologue on Page 2 if you like, but the pertinent changes are as follows:

1) Cassie no longer came through with a limp and no pet, then left and was never seen again. Instead, her pet came through without her once, dropped off survivors, then roared and charged back into the pool (ostensibly to save its mistress). The end result is the same, but I like the optics of this version better.

2) Mahmout no longer disappeared through the pool after his speech about the PARTY coming after the Last Day. Instead, he remained on the village's side, channeling constantly at the pool until the very end. The effort killed him, and he is interred in the village's Shrine.

Again, it's mostly about optics. You may now return to your regularly scheduled programming!
