Chapter 2.2- A quiet residence

Kimi:

You, Federick, and Kirkman enter the Bentley's neighborhood. The sky is cloudy and threatens rain, which is fortunate as it keeps more people off the streets and out of your way. The house is brightly lit and fairly large, though it looks like it is old and not exactly in the best condition. Obvious attempts to improve the almost dumpy exterior have been made, but the house is in need of repairs. Clearly Mrs. Bentley is trying to give an impression of wealth where there is none. Frederick turns towards you, looking around to make sure that no one is nearby. Alright, we will go to the front and see about putting everyone to sleep. You go around back and try to find another way in. We'll call out to you when things are clear and Kirkman will go back to headquarters. Sound good?

ooc: Go ahead and respond and then roll a hide, move silently, and search so I can see how effective you are at sneaking in. Thanks!

Re: Chapter 2.2- A quiet residence

Kimi nodded once, then moved around to the back of the house.  She peeked in where she could see through curtains, but was looking mostly for a dark room.  If she found one, she tested the window to see if she could open it.

23:35, Today: Kimi-Yuka Noriko rolled 19 using 1d20+1. Search.

Re: Chapter 2.2- A quiet residence

ooc: Nice rolls! I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume you are going to enter the room via the window since it is easily accessible. If this is jumping the gun on my part I apologize and I will edit my post. I just wanted you to be able to get on with your sneaking! ;)

You don't take long in your search and you see a window that seems to lead to a basement. The room is dark and it does not take much to break the lock and slide in. Naturally you came prepared with a small lantern. Should you wish you may light it and upon doing so you find that the room is larger than you thought it would have been and it is considerably cluttered with things. There are crates, shelves of herbs and rare ingredients, some of which you recognize from your native Japan. You also see books and books on the occult as well as what appears to be the messy remains of several bodies in an old rusty bathtub.

Re: Chapter 2.2- A quiet residence

Moving carefully, and with the light by the lantern, Kimi poked into things looking for the hand mentioned before.  The body remains make her stop.  They are made more macabre by the limited light. Something has DEFINITELY gone wrong here.

Kimi does not know a lot about the occult but she knows this is wrong.  She looks for any vessels that seem to have been opened recently.

Re: Chapter 2.2- A quiet residence

You look about you. The crates are easily opened and if you are to search the contents you find scrolls, similar to those found at the tailor's shop. The languages are foreign to you though, so you have no way of knowing if they are similar in function or for a different purpose. The place is nice and tidy in spite of the body parts, so it is difficult to tell what has been used recently. As you linger, looking at the vast collection of odds and ends, you start to feel quite ill. Dizziness overwhelms you and you feel a stabbing sensation in your throat as though it is being cut from the inside. Breathing becomes difficult. Above you there is footsteps. Whether they are Frederick and Kirkman's or the servants, you do not know. By now it is all you can do to stay standing.

ooc: Please roll a fortitude save and post your response ;P

Feeling very weak, you sink to your knees, shuddering in your attempt to breathe you find the sharp feeling increases and to your horror you begin to cough up what appears to be silver needles and an alarming amount of blood. As you struggle you can hear Frederick calling you from upstairs to let you know things are clear.

Re: Chapter 2.2- A quiet residence

It takes a few minutes but the banging of the lantern eventually does its job. Frederick and Kirkman come down the stairs, calling your name. By now you are on the ground, barely conscious, blood and needles everywhere. Frederick swears and rushes to your side, holding you gently while he snaps for Kirkman to do something. He assesses the situation quickly, looking stressed but managing to stay calm. He takes something out of his pocket and puts a hand on your forehead, muttering something in Latin. It takes a few moments, but at last the pain is subsiding and you can breathe again. You feel shaky and weak though and Frederick doesn't let you go until you are stable. She's hidden hexbags in here somewhere. Kirkman growls, already searching. We need to find them fast or we'll be joining Miss Noriko. Quickly both of you!

ooc: Roll search please

ooc; Lol. Yikes.... ;P

The way you are feeling you can barely find the door at this rate. Fortunately you are in recovery mode now, but the others are starting to show signs of symptoms like yours. I can protect you Frederick, but I'm not able to cast protection on myself. I'm already hexed. You need to find it quickly. Kirkman says firmly, already blessing the man as he did you before. The place is alarmingly cluttered in some areas, so finding the hex bags proves difficult. By the time he does Kirkman is twitching on the floor, a pile of bloody pins beneath him, but luckily still alive. Frederick starts to destroy them, ripping them open quickly with his dagger and spreading the contents around. There is silence as everyone takes a moment, recovering from the near disaster that was barely averted. This place is more dangerous than I thought Miss Noriko. I want you to return to headquarters. It's too risky. Frederick shakes his head worriedly.

Frederick gives you a small smile, though his eyes have not lost their worry. As tempting as that is, I can't go now. Clearly they have something to hide here and we need to find out what. You and Kirkman can go. I'll catch up with you as soon as I can. The hexbags have been destroyed, I'll be fine. Or, if you worry too much about me you can wait in the park for me. It's only a few minutes away and if I don't make it out within an hour you can come back for me or send help. But I can't leave now. We may not get a chance like this again for a while.

Re: Chapter 2.2- A quiet residence

Frederick looks about to say something then gives a sigh and finds you a crate to sit on. I will hurry Miss Noriko. He says gently. He then turns to Kirkman. If you are well enough to look around here a bit I will try upstairs. There may be something of import in the bedrooms. Kirkman gives a shaky nod and proceeds to search, albeit slowly, putting the most important items in a satchel he brought. No point in pretending we were'nt here now. They will know their hexbags have been tripped, not to mention strewn across the floor. They shouldn't be able to track us down though. At least, not if we're careful. He adds. Frederick returns after what seems an eternity. His face is pale and his shirt has blood on it. Th-there were jars of organs and a few more hexbags. I was careful this time. He explains. He then shows you a thick looking leather journal. It's in code, but I suspect it will be important. Are you two alright? Before you can answer you suddenly hear the sound of the front door opening upstairs, followed by footsteps and the sound of swearing. No doubt someone has arrived and found the unconscious servants...

I don't think we have a choice! He mutters back, already moving quickly to the window. Lady's first! He lifts you up, pushing you quickly through the window. He will also help Kirkman out, as the man is still a bit worse for the wear from the hexbags. You are on the ground outside, looking down through the small basement window as Frederick looks for something to stand on to pull himself up. By now the footsteps are headed downstairs. Run! He orders in a quiet, stressed tone. I need to hide!
He ducks behind some shelves just as the door bursts open. From your vantage point you can't see who it is very well (it is dark)but he seems to notice the open window and rushes towards it. Kirkman pulls on your arm. Come on! He starts to run.

Get up here quickly! It looks like the one from downstairs is being summoned upstairs to see you. The other man quickly runs out, obviously he intends to come around the house in pursuit of you.

Re: Chapter 2.2- A quiet residence

In spite of being so drained, you are fast. The men try to keep up with you but you do a good job of evading them. One barks something to the other and he falls back, returning to the house while the first one continues to pursue you. Still, in spite of this you are fairly sure that Frederick should have been able to slip away by now, leaving you to escape this single pursuer. He is not as fast as you but he does follow you for a while before you can lose him. By the time you do you are in the heart of the city, and not exactly the best area either. You have lost your bearings at the moment and when you are sure he is gone you have to take a moment to try to figure out where you are....

Kimi was out of breath, tucked into an alley way, and listening for her pursuer.  When she finally felt she was safe she poked out.  Pulling off her ninja mask, she wiped her face.  She waited for another few minutes until her breathing slowed.

Then creeping out of the alley, she had a look around.  She was not in a familiar place, and the are did not look savory either.  Keeping to the shadows, she looked for something familiar, a land mark, a street name.....

Re: Chapter 2.2- A quiet residence

You do find street names, but sadly none of them are familiar. By now it is starting to get late, and it is certainly dark enough that you do not feel safe. Especially in this particular area. The streets are fairly empty, but you do see a few figures by the streetlamps, talking quietly to each other and looking in your direction. Suddenly you hear a voice behind you. It is a Russian woman in her forties. Clearly she has seen better days. You are dressed very strangely.... She muses. No matter! You should not be here! The streets are not safe from....him.... She looks worried. You can stay with me until daylight if you like. He doesn't attack in daylight. She says darkly.

The woman takes you through several alleyways and streets, moving quickly but making sure you keep up. Eventually she takes you to a basement in an abandoned building. She talks as she leads. There have been disappearances. Deaths. Mostly among us poor folk. It all happened when Dmitri left his grave. You may think me silly, but I think it is he who does this. She shakes her head. Some think his body was stolen, but I know better. I know the signs. She opens the door and bids you enter. You can see from inside there is a fire in the hearth and some lumpy mattresses.

You enter and see that there are several children and a few other adults on the mattresses, some asleep and others talking quietly. She leads you past them into a makeshift kitchen, readying tea for you. He was a young man who came to America with our group. A bright, strong young man. But angry. Very angry. He took a fever and died a couple of months ago. That's when the killings started, after his body went missing. She shakes her head. I know many would call us superstitious, but can you think of a better explanation? I think he has become an Eretik. A type of vampire but not a bloodsucker. An undead. She shudders. You are not from America. Surely you must still believe in the impossible? She asks hopefully.

She frowns in thought. There is a cafe a few blocks over. They keep late hours. I believe they have some chairs and such made out of aspen. I'm sure a beautiful woman such as yourself could convince them to sell one. She offers helpfully. I could give you directions. It is not far. Clearly she is too frightened to go with you.

Re: Chapter 2.2- A quiet residence

The Russian woman bids you good luck, looking fearful for you, but hopeful nonetheless. She informs you that you are welcome there anytime should you need shelter, which is really saying something considering the woman has very little herself.

You step out into the night, using the fire escape to get to higher ground. From the rooftop you can see the streets easily and though it is dark you at least have some semblance of how occupied the areas are and how best to avoid detection. Fortunately the cafe is as close as she states, and you can see it clearly, well lit and still bustling despite the late hour. It is a beacon of safety in this uncertain area. You make it there easily and see the patrons are drinking and laughing inside, apparently in the throws of some good-natured argument over politics. You are also a bit shocked to see what you are certain is a prostitute with them, heavily painted and under dressed, looking more than a bit tipsy. It looks like a young Frenchman is the operator of this establishment and he has a rather handsome and friendly face. This may not be too hard....

The Frenchman smiles warmly at the sight of you. He seems to be a bit surprised at seeing someone like you in his establishment at this hour, and says as much, but he does give a friendly nod. Believe it or not I do. These louts can get a bit careless at times. He laughs, winking at the boisterous patrons. I have some in the back I haven't disposed of yet. But what would you want them for? He asks curiously.

The Frenchman listens with amusement. Well, I have heard of a lot of disappearances from this area, but I don't exactly think it was an 'entity.' He laughs. Of course your culture is quite different from my own and no doubt there are many things that differ between them. He says politely. If it's that important to you I will gladly give you all the broken chairs you wish. No charge. They're really just garbage anyway you know. As for walking alone at night, that will never do. I insist that I walk you home. He says firmly.

ooc: Well you sensed the crap out of his motive then with a natural 20! ;P

As he helps you fashion the broken chairs into instruments of self defense (namely stakes) you can tell that he's quite smitten with you. You've come to the conclusion that you are somewhat exotic to a lot of men and even in the Men of Letters you are treated with a certain care that is almost amusing. The Frenchman, Pierre is his name, chats as you both work, telling you how he came here five years ago and opened up the cafe. He seems to be both boastful and a bit self conscious at the same time, and he seems to be genuinely helpful. Clearly he's trying to impress you. He's also quite adamant about walking you home. It occurs to you that you may have to be creative as to where you lead him so as to not give away the headquarters location. That is, if you decide to allow him to tag along.

Re: Chapter 2.2- A quiet residence

You see the figure of a man, bent over a still form in the street. They are not far from where you are and you recognize the victim as Pierre. At this hour and in this neighborhood, no one else seems to have heard and you watch as the man drags his victim to a sewer drain and proceeds to start to stuff him inside. He is eating something at the same time and judging by the gaping wound in Pierre's side, you are fairly certain it is an organ of some kind. As the form gets closer to you it is hard not to gasp in surprise. You recognize the face. It is Nicholas!

Re: Chapter 2.2- A quiet residence

You fly through the streets of New York. Through alleys, up rooftops, zigzagging through empty markets. It is a bit of a ways off from headquarters, but not restrictively so. After about an hour and a half of running, you find yourself at the warehouse. Frederick paces in front, looking worried. He has not seen you yet apparently. Suddenly the front door opens and a familiar face emerges. Nicholas. No doubt he made it back faster through the sewer. You can faintly hear what they are saying. No sign of her yet? Nicholas asks with what could actually pass for worry. He is a most convincing actor. Frederick shakes his head unhappily. We got separated. I was sure she would have returned by now. I hope nothing has happened to her.

ooc: I'm assuming you meant to rejoin the Men of Letters. If I am incorrect, let me know and I'll fix it! :D

Well we made it back from the house, but none of the others have returned. I'm getting a bit worried actually. He frowns. I'm going to keep a lookout here in case anyone straggles in. He informs you.

As you head underground to find Westbrook, you do indeed see Nicholas in one of the corridors. His back is to you and he is walking towards an undeveloped part of the tunnels....

ooc: Ok, so you can either try to engage him in conversation and take him by surprise or you can try to sneak up on him but if you fail your move silently he will be warned by your coming and you will be at a disadvantage. Go ahead and decide which route you will take. Also, if you want, in order to move things along efficiently, you can roll your attack roll as well and I'll factor it into my post. Good luck! Also, don't worry about the damage roll yet as I'm still working on stats for the stake.

Re: Chapter 2.2- A quiet residence

From what you can tell he seems to be rather shifty acting. You aren't sure as to whether the creature is able to take others forms or not, but judging by the fact that he is acting a bit suspicious you are thinking that this person in front of you could likely be the culprit you saw previously.

ooc: Should you wish you can try to follow him sneakily or you can fake your way into a conversation to see if he reveals anything or you could just go for it. He won't see your stake for sure at least so that's good. As for stats, I think because it is a weapon that is specialized to kill that certain type of creature I am going to increase the stats on damage in cases like this. It just makes sense. You will roll your usual melee attack and then automatically add +10 damage to every damage roll you make, the hit die for a stake will be 1d4 x2 for critical, like a dagger. After all, in the show staking usually goes pretty easily for them and I do try to be as true to it as I can. I'm just waiting on a post on the other thread and then I will merge yours. Until then feel free to continue on here.

There is no honour in an attack the opponent cannot see.  So Kimi waited until she was close to call Nicholas' name.  When he faced her, she struck for the heart, using all her strength to drive the stake in deeply.

She readied to strike him again, the next stake in her hand.  She was ready for any attack he may retaliate with.

You do indeed catch him by surprise, but the stake misses his heart and instead is buried by his collarbone and shoulder. He gasps in surprise and pain and rips it out, flinging it away like it is poison. He calls you a rather nasty word and his face is enraged as he attempts to strike you. Fortunately he misses for you have a feeling there is quite a bit of power behind his blows...
