Chapter 8.5

The next morning Simon, Lily and Jo rush off to the train station, which is fortunately not far. The summons from Victoria was urgent. "I need you South!" the telegraph read. How the attendant found you to deliver it was a mystery but then the woman was a witch, she had her ways. "Go to New Orleans immediately! I will find you!" That was all it said. It was decided that the group should split, especially since the need here was so pressing, and you three were deemed best fit to answer the call.

I hate trains Lily grumbled as she plopped down in the seat, stuffing her carpet bag under the seat and crossing her arms. Whatever this is, it had better be important. I hate being stuffed in a tin can full of people she glares at the other passengers as though it is somehow their fault she is there. Seeing a scowling Indian woman, most give her a wide berth. I don't suppose either of you have been to New Orleans? Full of hoodoo isn't it? I think Victoria is from there... she muses.

ooc: Since you will be sleeping on the train, here's a link to what the sleeping accommodations look like. Crappy eh?

Chapter 8.5

Smiling happily to be traveling with Lily and Simon, Jo was all grins today. She hadn't ever ridden on a train, so this was quite the excitement for her.

At Lily's question, she shook her head, and smiled,

"Nope, not to New Orleans... never been much out of home, to be honest. This will be great!" she tried to cheer her riding partner up, nudging shoulders softly with her, "Plus, we've got Simon with us! Sky is the limit!" she giggled, obviously quite satisfied with this trip.

Chapter 8.5

Simon is lulled into a half sleep by the gentle rocking of the train car. It takes him a few moments to answer, "Yes, I've been to New Orleans. Twice actually, once as a child and once as a student. My second trip took me four years, Loyola University. Voodoo is not satanic, in fact is is based heavily on Catholicism and is should really be considered a subset of the same. It is present, but so is the Church and I don't think you will be as uncomfortable as you think. It is very...enlightened."

Chapter 8.5

Lily arches an eyebrow at Simon's words. Really? Well I hope they are enlightened enough to accept an Indian woman without too much bother. Not many of us in that city I'd wager. I'm glad you've been there. I hate strange cities and New York is bad enough even knowing where I am. She turns to Jo suddenly. And you are far too chipper my friend. Ugggh- I bet you're a morning person aren't you? I'll wake up tomorrow and have you bouncing off the walls won't I? she looks disgusted and fond at the same time somehow.

The train ride goes smoothly enough. There is an actual dining car but for the first few days of the stretch there are dining houses along the way where the train stops and you can get out and eat. It feels wonderful to stretch your legs and Lily in particular is having a difficult time being pent up. She gets bored quickly and restless and you can tell she is frustrated at taking such a long method to travel when she's used to horseback and open air. The bunking situation is interesting. Simon is given the bottom bunk and Lily and Jo must cram onto the top. There is no room to straighten your legs and it is a scrunched mess. The fact that all the other passengers are going through the same thing at least means you are in good company though when one portly man proves to be a snorer it is all you can do to keep Lily from jumping out of her bunk to strangle him.

ooc: What are you going to do for the next 4 days?

Chapter 8.5

Laughing at Lily's words, Josephine just shook her head as if to wave away all the negativity, and she gave her a big, friendly hug,

"Its silly to waste effort on being upset, when you can instead burn it on being happy. Come on now, we have all the time in the world to get to know people on the train, relax, and see the sights as we travel along. Its like riding, only with less responsibility. Enjoy it!" she giggled, unable to be made any less happy than before.

Even in their cramped conditions, she finds it comforting to be so close to somebody she trusts, and likes, and curls up happily, snoozing along.

Chapter 8.5

It's going to be a long trip... she shakes her head at the onslaught of cheer though there is enough amusement in her face to show she's mostly jesting. She tosses and turns horribly in the cramped space and for the next few days she is out of sorts in spite of her best efforts. She is so tired that she will often slump against whichever of you is seated next to her and fall asleep that way, peaceful at last for the night holds no rest for her.

The dining houses eventually grow sparse and you end up eating in the elegant dining cars instead and the food is unexpectedly good. Trains have greatly improved these days and you are enjoying yourselves quite well, save for Lily of course. The scenery also improves once you are out of the desert and as you wend your way south you are greeted with lush trees and mysterious swampland, so intriguing you would be tempted to explore it if you weren't stuck in a moving tin can as Lily terms it.

By the time you make it to the station at New Orleans, it is quite late, well past midnight and absolutely pouring rain. The passengers tiredly file off, most of them met by relatives or hansom cabs, taking them to the wet night. Lily is so happy to be off the train that she doesn't seem to mind the rain. Instead she drops her carpetbag underneath an awning and with a happy laugh throws her arms wide and steps into the wet night, looking up at the sky as she gets completely soaked, not caring one bit. I can breathe again! she whoops. How far is the nearest hotel? Can we walk!? she suggests excitedly. Of course such a request is mad considering how wet it is. ooc: Simon, since you've spent so much time here you can go ahead and suggest the nearest hotel, etc.

Chapter 8.5

Simon shook his head, "This is not the area to stay in, the docks are more of a warehouse district. We are not really within walking distance of anywhere to stay. May I suggest we take the trolley? It is open air and runs on electricity! We can make our way to St. Charles Avenue, where Loyola's Campus is. There are lots of nice but relatively inexpensive hotels there for families visiting students."

Chapter 8.5

Lily arches a dark brow at the words trolley but gives a half smile of acceptance. Alright, since it's open air I suppose... she chuckles, patting Simon's cheek.

Soon the three of you are headed towards St Charles Avenue, on one of the last trolleys of the night luckily. This time of night the streets are pretty empty, especially with the rain driving down so hard. You are able to find a hotel easily and though it is a bit old it is well kept and tidy. By now you are all soaked, though Lily doesn't seem to mind, a wide broad smile on her face now that she's off the train. well, I suppose the two of us will share and you'll be on your own. I have plenty of money Lily pats her pocket with a nod to Simon. I have no idea when we can expect Victoria but hopefully she lets us have a night's sleep at least. We should ask for rooms close together, in case of trouble. If Victoria wants us here something must be wrong.

Chapter 8.5

"You two are so cute together!" Josephine leans over and whispers at one point to Lily, giggling at her happiness. Still, heading towards the trolleys sounded interesting, and she took full advantage of the sights, peering this way and that, like a lost tourist might.

Hearing Lily mention how they'll be sleeping/staying, Josephine kept her opinions to herself, as she didn't wish to offend their religious companion, and she wasn't entirely sure how not to, so for now, she wisely chose silence. She was comfortable with a whole lot of things that Simon might have found distasteful, having lived her entire life in a bar, so she wanted to keep her crass ideas hidden whenever she could.

Lily bids Simon to be careful and then she and Jo head to the inn though she lets Jo take the lead as far as ordering the room, which you share though it has two small beds and Lily ecstatically stretches on the thing, looking immensely happy.

Soon you are all in your respective beds for the night. Simon is easily admitted to the chapel and his old companions are happy to see him, chatting a bit before he retires.

Eventually you all fall into a deep and sound sleep, having been deprived of such on the train so long. The peace is interrupted, however, by a very vivid dream...

There are flashes, quick views that flit away into intense moments of sound and blurred visions. You are in a small room, the low ceiling slanted in a triangle, no doubt an attic of some kind. The dust and cramped quarters are oppressive. Blackness, a scream of pain, blood on the dusty wood floor, someone shouting though you can't understand it. Red flowers. Roses? A black raven stares at you, unblinking and unmovable. Then you awake, jolting upright and covered in sweat, heart racing though you aren't sure why. It is morning.

Jo: You experience the same thing, though when you awake you see Lily is upright too and looking quite agitated.

Looking surprised, and sweaty and worried, Jo glanced over at Lily, and after a second, she laughed softly,

"I just had the weirdest dream... phew! Glad to wake up from that one!" she laughed again, falling back onto her back in relief.

Speaking from this position, she asked,

"You sleep just a badly? I think in my dream I was in some screwy attic, or something... roses and birds... ugh." she shook her head, clearly trying to just wave the experience off.

Jo: Lily lets out a string of expletives that you're certain she wouldn't say in front of Simon, and bolts out of bed. Get dressed. Fast. I had the same dream and considering the circumstances it could be Victoria trying to get a message to us. Come, we must meet up with Simon she starts to dress with impressive speed. Roses...crows...heaven forbid she just tell us what she means! If it even is Victoria. What else could it be though? she grumbles as she tugs on her boots. Just then there is a soft knock at the door. The Indian woman stiffens, grabs a pistol and keeps it by her side but motions for you to get it. Should you do so you'll find no one is there but there is a small box, wrapped in black parchment paper sitting on the other side.

Simon: Soon after writing your dream you hear a soft knock at the door. Should you investigate you'll find no one there but there is a small box, wrapped in black parchment paper on the other side of it.

"Just a box. Black paper. Should I touch it?" she asked, fully unsure as to what she was supposed to be doing here. Suddenly things got very real, and she'd just waken up. No time to even fix her hair...

Then she takes it to the desk and cautiously opens it, gasping an instant later and backing away involuntarily. Should you decide to look you will see a single eye, human with the nerve bundles still attached. It's incredibly grotesque, the iris is brown and it is still covered in blood. In a neat little folded note of very fine parchment you read: A small note of advice. Leave New Orleans to its own devices

Chapter 8.5

Simon put the box back as it was, except that he put the wrapping inside. He dressed for the day, said his goodbyes to the clergy, then went to the telegraph station. He sent to messages.

The first went to his superiors in Rome -
Arrived in New Orleans (stop)
Need to know bounds of assignment (stop)
Please Advise (stop)

Note: This is Simon asking for whether or not he can exorcise demons as he sees fit, or does he need Rome's permission.

The second is addressed to Penny & Kate
Arrived safely (stop)
Have new acquiescence (stop)
Sending Blessing (stop)

Note: Penny and Kate have likely been shown Simon's short hand cipher. Basically certain words have two meanings, such as the phrase Arrived safely which means both "we're OK" and "we are in danger," Have new acquiescence can also mean "new enemy, Sending Blessing should be read as is since both are capitalized.

Once telegrams are sent he seeks out Lily and Josephine. He shows them the box and tells them of his prophetic dream, which mirrors their own.

Simon, you wrack your mind for ideas. You determine the likelihood is Victoria, or someone anyway, is trying to reach you. The attic is probably where she is but the rose and the raven...? Then you recall something from your old days. The rose route it was called. A street of flower girls, mostly selling roses down in the east district of the city. It may be a long shot but it's the only start you have right now. The raven evades you for now save that it is usually an ill omen.

Even Simon is having a difficult time of things until an old black woman hisses at you from behind a building, poking her head out from around a corner. As you turn she gestures for you to approach, looking around suspiciously. You a holy man? she eyes your attire with wide eyes. Folk around here too scared to talk to ya but I won't be lyin to the church no sir! If you follow me I might be able to help You see around the corner there is a small stairwell that seems to lead to a basement apartment and she motions for you to follow.

If you do so you find yourselves in a small parlor that has seen better days. Her old furniture is dusty and worn and the small room is cramped with odds and ends that have no real purpose, half of them little more than junk. She bids you all sit and the wooden chairs creak beneath you, also in sorry condition. Why do you seek the raven? You know if they hear ya askin around you're as good as dead, priest or not

Uh...I've been told I may be a wendigo hunter she mumbles uncertainly, clearly unsettled that the woman can see through her so easily.

Heh! Is that what you've been told? Well if that's what you wanna believe I guess... she grins. Then she turns to the box, ignoring Lily's confused look. Well, let's see who these belong to she motions to Jo, who has spotted a chicken of all things wandering in the adjoining room. Why don you go and get her for me eh? she gestures to the blond. Should you do so she takes the bird, who squawks in protest and then producing a knife from the folds of her skirt she roughly slits the poor thing's throat, holding it upside down by its feet as the blood drains into the box, covering the eyes. She then tosses the bird aside, concentrating, her eyes rolling back into her head. Well I reckon this is your Victoria alright. I've heard of her I'm thinkin. Her family was well known before she left. You bring me the rest of her and I may be able to put these back in. I can see what she's doin right now and it's not lookin good. Simon bite his lip when it was discovered that these were indeed Victoria's eyes. His face twitched in anger, righteous anger, and his voice came out more stern than usual. "Victoria is our friend. I am involved and I will see this through."

Lily listens with a look of horror and then her face turns cold, hatred twisting her features. Where? Tell us where. The woman glances at her a long wary moment and then nods. The Ravens you are lookin for. Don't know why Victoria would be fool enough to get mixed up with them. They are the oldest voodoo clan in these parts! They have a big house up the hill a ways but it's warded somethin fierce. You'll need some protection I'm thinkin she pulls out a small chest and some velvet pouches and begins to place ingredients inside as she talks. These will protect you from most of the nasties, so long as they don't take them away from you. A bullet will still kill though and they have plenty of those too. Keep these on you at all times, hide em as best you can. I don't suppose you have any friends you can take with you? Three of you ain't much against the likes of them. Unlessin you can get them out of the house somehow

He's right. You could sweet talk a rabid badger with that mouth of yours. You'll need to too. I'm getting Victoria out. Now. Both of you take care around me. I can't promise I will be in my usual mind. If I black out... she warns shaking her head. The rage in her eyes has not disappeared and Simon in particular knows what lurks beneath.

ooc; Let me know if you make any additional preparations before you head to the Raven establishment. Lily is inclined to go now though if you convince her to wait until dark she will argue but acquiesce. Seeing Simon say a prayer, and then disappear off with Lily, Josephine looked exasperated, and threw her hands up, but then she turned back towards the Raven stronghold, taking a breath.

Welp, it seems they want to throw me back into the mix again... she thought, breathing slowly through her teeth to calm her nerves.

Approaching the doorway, Josephine eventually walked all the way up, and swallowed, knocking on the door,

"Hello?" she asked, stepping back away from the door looking up as if searching for an upstairs window to see if anybody was inside. In reality, she was just positioning further back to give the others a sight of anybody that came after her.

Seeing not only a large man, but a large black man didn't help Josephine's nervousness at all, and she shivered involuntarily. She didn't attribute anything to his race, but darker colored skin in the black of night made him look more intimidating, and she was prime for being intimidated right now.

"I..I..." she paused, swallowing and glancing downwards, "Is he here?" she wagered a guess, trying to act like somebody who KNEW was inside already, "I really need to talk to him... please..." she said, figuring either he'd assume she was right (doubtful) and go get somebody, or he would grow angry, and she could bait him into stepping out after her.

Sensing his willingness to help, most might be appreciative, but Josephine smelled weakness,

"I don't know..." she said, a slight whining tone entering her voice as she spoke, as if she were frustrated, "I... there was this guy... and he pointed me this direction when I asked where he was staying. I was supposed to meet with him for dinner, but he never showed..." she said, her face blushing slightly, as she turned her face away to seem bothered or embarrassed about it. Looking up to meet his eyes, she asked softly, playing on the vulnerable look,

"Am I being foolish? I'm being foolish aren't I?" she asked, and to bait him into perhaps stepping out, she turned her back, and stepped a step away, placing her face in her hands. Jo didn't know many men to be able to turn away from a woman they thought was crying, and she was hoping this would benefit her friends. She could drag this out in a different direction if he didn't fall for it, but she was willing to do the work, whatever it took...

Chapter 8.5

Hearing his words about black men, Josephine turned her head halfway, blushing,

"You wouldn't be trying to fool me now, would you?" she said, her tone soft, and obviously slightly teasing, warming up to him. Baiting a man into believing their interaction was 'real' required a combination of careful tact, tactically selected words, and a SLOW progression. If she blatantly just hit on him right now, it'd be transparent, so she instead waved a hand, towards the bench, and asked softly,

"Would you do me the honor of a talk?" she asked, hinting that he was earning points with her, but not outright saying it, "I fear I may be a bit foolish, at times, and could use somebody decent in my life..." she kept her words ambiguous, just enough to allow his hopeful mind to fill in the spaces with what she needed him to think...

Glancing sideways for a moment, as if slightly embarrassed, Josephine glanced Simon and Lily's direction, though she couldn't see them. She didn't know what they needed other than baiting the man out of the house, which she'd done now. Dispatching him, and then using his body to bait in the others would be a simple matter as well. Nothing brought people outside like their friend being unconscious, and a woman's scream for help...

ooc: Ok, if Simon wants to join her you can both attack at once. Roll a move silently to see how quiet you are and if he notices, and then an attack and the method you will do so. My ability to get an extra action during diplomacy before they react... can I make a double "nut-kick" on the guy, right as they attack, to help them out? "React first" says it ignores initiative, gives me surprise... so would I theoretically (with good initiative) be able to Attack, roll init, attack, then Simon and Lily attack, giving us 4 attacks to 0?

He begins to shout for help much to your dismay, whipping out a long knife but Lily savagely rolls forward and plunges a dagger into his thigh. He slashes at the priest but misses fortunately.

ooc: Jo, go ahead and roll for this round and then another for the next round, so 2 attacks from you Jo. Jo/Simon: The door is still wide open and you enter cautiously, poking your heads in first, weapons at the ready. It is a huge place, well furnished but obviously very old, probably well over a hundred years. There is an uneasy feeling as you walk, like eyes watching you and the hair on the back of your neck stands up, it seems so wrong here. Fortunately the stairs are easy to find and you're able to move quietly, save an incident with Father Simon and a squeaky stair. Luckily no one seems to hear you and you make it up to the top of the stairs without incident. The whole place is three stories and you skip the second floor and go straight for the attic, which takes up the entire third level. The door though is locked...

Chapter 8.5

Lily wordlessly pulls out a lockpick and starts fumbling, muttering curses as she does. I'm a little rusty...keep a look out she growls. At last she manages to get it open and when you enter you see the same attic room from your dreams. There is a small white bed against the wall and in it, lying on her back is Victoria. She lies perfectly still, her eyes closed. She looks an absolute mess and Lily rushes to her side, frantic. Before she can check if she lives though you see a black woman sitting in the corner of the room in a rocking chair. She watches you with a smirk of amusement. I thought I made it clear you should have left New Orleans. A pity for you.

I'm no demon priest she scoffs at Simon's attempts at exorcism. The door slams shut behind you and you hear a click as the lock resets itself, all done with unseen hands. she's a witch Lily growls, still crouched by Victoria's bed, glittering eyes never leaving the woman. Who I am is of no concern to you. Victoria belongs to me. Always has. She knew better than to step foot in this city again. Must have been desperate. She owes me too great a debt to leave now. I don't let my property run away twice. As for you three, hm...I've been running low on components. And a priest should make particularly fine pickings...

The woman gives a flick of her hand and you both feel an immense pain come over you, as though your esophagus is being torn up from the inside. Simon manages to steel himself against it and a second later the pain subsides though you are a bit startled by the intensity of it. Lily likewise seems unfazed, standing up with a glower, hand on her tomahawk. Jo, however, is not so lucky and you double over as the pain worsens. A moment later you realize what has caused it for you are wracked with an agonizing cough and to your horror several small needles find their way into your mouth from your throat. You cough them onto the floor, along with your blood. Witches. Why'd it have to be witches? Lily mutters with a growl. Hang on Jo

Simon felt as though he had been asleep, not because he had, but because the suddenness and intensity of the pain caused his adrenaline glands to go into overdrive. As the pain dulled his hand snapped down and he drew his trusted revolver, whose ammunition he keeps in a blessed state. His body worked on muscle memory as he turned his right side to the witch in profile, planted his back foot, and leaned into the weapon as he fired it. Being so close meant he was attacking as if point blank, and the subsonic round would be hard pressed not to find it's target.

Simon's bullet finds it's mark though it only grazes the woman's arm. Her eyes bulge in fury and she raises her hand and flings him back, slamming him against the wall. Meanwhile Lily hurls a tomahawk at the witch and it buries itself in her thigh though of course it is not a mortal wound. Meanwhile you hear footsteps rushing up the stairs and a second later the door is being rammed against, no doubt men coming to their mistress's aid.

ooc: Jo, go ahead and roll another fort save to see if you keep coughing up needles. The door will break by the next round so you can feel free to shoot one of them after you roll your fort save. The basics for your sheet are ready and up for you.

Who knows how many more of these fools are wandering about she mutters. As you do so she moves to the bed where the still prostrate and unconscious Victoria lies. With a grunt she kneels by the bed and pulls her over her shoulder, panting and scowling. For a brief uncertain instant she tries to stand and her green eyes widen with worry that she'll fall over, but determination wins out and she stands upright, now much more solid in her carry of the woman. Alright, let's see if we can go down those stairs without dropping her shall we? she mutters. Indeed, as you traverse the narrow escape passage downstairs she often has to stop and ask you to steady the woman. It is quite a little adventure in and of itself. At last you reach the exit, finding yourselves outside on the grounds. Across the street you see Simon bent over and investigating the still body of the witch. Go help him. Meanwhile the other one points you in the direction of a doctor's office, a few blocks down, offering to come back and assist you if need be, though there are hansom cabs too that would sort you out. They are the picture of agreeable now that they think you innocent. They soon rush off to investigate the house, weapons drawn. It won't bode well for any stragglers there.

Once they are out of earshot Lily breaks into a grin. Nice work you too, especially adding that touch of righteous authority she wrinkles her nose at Simon with a laugh. Now, do you want to actually try the doctor? Or do you think you can heal them on your own?

Simon shook his head, "They are beyond my ability. The doctor is our best option." He then looked at Josephine, "That was amazing. You wound the truth around a fishing reel and caught yourself two cops and then you threw them back. You never actually lied, and yet you made them believe you so thoroughly..." He shook his head and smiled, "I am just glad you don't turn that on me."

Lily says nothing at your exchange but seems ever so slightly unimpressed with it. Instead she mutters something about hurrying this up, hailing a hansom cab and directing the gentle admission of Victoria's still form, the poor woman's lids still closed.

Soon enough you end up at the doctor's office who looks shocked at the injuries. Victoria appears to have been beaten significantly and of course there is the loss of her eyes. Then of course the gunshot wounds to the older woman. What happened to them!? he demands in shock. Can you save them or not? Lily ignores the question, seemingly in no mood to dilly dally. I don't know...I think so... he frowns, unsure which one to examine first. How long until this one wakens? she gestures to Victoria. I'm sorry, there's no telling he shrugs helplessly. I will need answers though. It is my duty to file a police report. Lily turns to Josephine and arches a dry brow. She really is in a mood it seems. Well? You want to explain it to the gentlemen? You are so much better with words than I.

We just happened upon her, and knew she needed some kind of medical attention, so we did the best thing we could, and we brought her here with us." she said, meeting the doctor's gaze, "Please... we're just trying to protect this woman, and make sure she gets home alive. We've handled all of the paperwork, and the officers assured us that they were going to stop the perpetrators, can you save her?" she pleaded, re-focusing the doctor on succeeding for her, instead of worrying about the rest of it.

It would seem he is more accustomed to splinting legs than dealing with eyeless women and minor surgery, not that he's incapable of course but you would bet it's been a while since he saw wounds of this magnitude. He is particularly horrified by Victoria's missing eyes, swearing and asking why anyone would do such a thing.

The first thing she'll try to do is hex us. We should at the very least gag her mouth. She can't do anything if she can't talk. Or at least it will be more difficult, depends on how powerful she is. Simon: The woman must see something in the Indian's eyes for she complies quickly. Through a series of yes and no questions you learn that she knows Victoria personally and gather they must have had some kind of falling out. She doesn't know why Victoria was in the city though apparently she did interrogate her. If she's linked to the issues with Belial she does a good job of denying it, but obviously the woman has evils of her own designs judging by what she did to poor Victoria.

She allows him but you can see on her face that she wants to know more but is hindered by the man's presence. Any idea who rescued me? she asks lightly, as though hinting she's wondering about her friends.

Simon: She nods, watching Lily again and speaks quickly, eyes never leaving the woman who watches coldly. You find out that the coven has been there for decades and that Victoria was once a member of it. They run the dark underbelly of the city but she makes no mention of demons and balks when such a thing is suggested. You wonder just how much Victoria was involved with such people and why they would hate her enough to take out her eyes. The old woman just says there was a falling out and Lily suggests you don't press it. What should we do with her? If we leave her alive she'll just go running back to her coven. Chapter 8.5

Darren: New Orleans is definitely a far cry from Boston. It has its own bustling streets filled with hansom cabs and trolleys, however the people here have a much different feel. For one there are black people everywhere, far greater in number than you are used to and with a proud watchful look in their eyes. The shops are more colorful, the people more interesting. What a place to lose a friend.

Frederick, the plain faced man who recruited you so many months ago, would pick this of all places to disappear! He'd always been somewhat mysterious of his organization but you gathered things were afoot with these men he claimed to work for. Just last month he'd come to you, shaken and proclaiming some half of their ranks had been killed from within and that he didn't know who to trust. Needless to say it's been frustrating to have such limited information but Frederick lets things slip from time to time, ever the talker, especially when drunk.

The telegram he sent two weeks ago only confused you all the more.

In New Orleans-stop-over my head-stop-Stalder Street Inn-stop-

Finding the inn proves easy enough, though it takes a bit of getting used to the hansom cab driver's cajun accent. He soon drives you to a stately dark colored place jammed between two other houses, a tiny iron fenced yard surrounding it. You take care to avoid the horse muck left on the street as you pick your way up to the gate, which though not locked, is inhospitably shut even at three in the afternoon. You squint up at the door and note a sign scrawled unceremoniously. "CLOSED."

Josephine: Pm

Simon: Unfortunately the witch is fast and before either of you can do anything you are flung back. You can feel her trying to pin you to the wall with her power but you struggle to resist. The ropes slip from her body as though they have a mind of her own. Lily looks furious and you get the feeling if she gets a hold of her she really will rip her liver out.

ooc: Go ahead and roll a Fortitude save to see if you escape as well as a constitution check to see if you catch up to her as she turns tail and tries to run...

Arriving in New Orleans was a culture shock to say the least but it wasn't in a negative regard. Darren spoke a little with his cabbie, mostly about historical features of the surroundings, Darren's interest being cit off with their arrival at the inn.

Darren steppes out, paid the cabbie and approached the gate. Seeing the sign but paying it little mind Darren opened the gate as if he owned the place and approached the door being mindful of his surroundings and remaining attentive

What's more disturbing than the woman is the awful smell. It nearly chokes you it is so strong.

Jo: Victoria reaches out, clutching for your arm or hand, anything. Please. Stalder Street Inn. You've got to find Frederick! If he's still alive... She is looking quite tired but you can tell she's frantic. Meanwhile the doctor agrees with you that she needs rest and gives her some medicine that will soon put her to sleep.

Simon: You are able to break away from the pin, as is Lily but the witch is fast and she knows the streets better than either of you. Lily races after her and they disappear down an alley as you struggle to catch up. You lose them for a while, searching the streets and trying to find a sign of them. Suddenly you hear a scream. Should you follow it you race around a corner to see Lily bent over the old woman who is lying dead, her eyes wide open in pure fear. The scream seems to have come from an onlooker and her companion, a strong looking man who is likewise gripped in horror. Lily holds a liver in her hand, and she stares down in horror, bewildered. You can tell it is your normal Lily again. The couple starts to run, screaming for help. This could get complicated.

"Alright!" Josephine's heart ached for the woman, and as soon as the doctor put her to sleep, Josephine took off, asking the doctor on the way out for directions to that inn, just so she could go hurry and find this Frederick fellow!

Chapter 8.5

Simon is rushing to get Lily to safety. Her question catches him off guard. "Lily I know very little of Wendigo other than they are demons created out of cannibalism. Perhaps you have begin to see evil in other places and are having the same reaction. I pretend nothing, Lily. You are the woman I love, the woman I intend to marry. That is wholly true and not mere conjecture on my part."

Chapter 8.5

The sound and smells within caught Darren's attention and his instinct to protect his friend took over and Darren moved into action, his adrenaline coursing through him, empowering him to action. Darren released a roar right before charging into the woman who was treating rudely.

" I'm coming!", Darren shouted just before making contact. Darren wasn't sure what he was doing was the right call but he had already taken the action now and had to follow through. Assuming Darren lived, he'd have to determine later if this action was the right one.

Chapter 8.5

Darren: You are able to force the door open to her surprise, but you realize it's most likely because she wasn't expecting it rather than a lack of strength on her part. You realize this particularly because she brings a fist smashing into your jaw and it hurts far more than a woman's fist has a right to cause. You are inside now, and as you ready against this lunatic woman, you see to your horror the room is littered with bodies. Well, what's left of them. The pieces strewn about have clearly been eaten on  by something. With a screech of rage she lunges at you again...

ooc: Ok, go ahead and roll your next round. Her AC is 20 so you will know if you hit or miss and can post accordingly. I appreciate the detailed way you've posted thus far so I don't have to look up your AC, etc. Go ahead and roll your attack and damage totals as well as your intentions and as the fight continues keep me abreast of your hit points too please. I don't worry about initiative when it's one on one so much so you can ignore that for the moment if you like and just go for it. Also, if you want to roll a knowledge check you can determine if you have any idea of what she may or may not be. I think that should cover it! Also, you'll be joined by Josephine quite soon.

Jo: You make it to the inn by hansom cab. The door is wide open and even from the walkway you can see a man and woman struggling inside!

Simon: She looks up at you in shock at the last part, green eyes wide. Well aren't you confident? she grins after recovering. What makes you think I'll say yes? There's a teasing glint to her eyes, but you can tell she's still worried about her previous question. The rest of it has definitely distracted her though and you can tell she's touched and also quite surprised.

Having seen witches that were female, and knowing that the guy she's supposed to be saving is named Frederick, Josephine did the only obvious thing a clearly thinking woman would do in this situation...

Charged the woman, and jumped on her,

"Don't worry Frederick, I'm here to save you!" she shouted, leaping at the woman to tackle her and drag her down...

At first it seems she is doing well, but the dark woman is clearly the stronger and they wrestle a bit, giving you a nice opening... ooc: Go ahead and post for an attack of opportunity as well as a regular attack :)

Jo: pm

Simon: What would an Indian need a ring for anyway? she smirks. Not that that's a yes mind you. I haven't been properly asked yet after all. Adrenaline coursed through his views, Boon was suprised by this dame's strength but he was more suprised at the scene around him. Darren, however let the battle focus him. Darren did like always, putting up his guard and letting his mass and endurance win the fight fore him.

Darren threw a punch that connected solid. He felt it and used his street smarts to drill it home doing a little more damage. As he drew back to turtle up, a blonde woman crashed into the crazed dame.

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, Darren took the opportunity to get a free hit in. His father haD always said not to hit a woman but judging from his surroundings he doubted she was a proper one.

Chapter 8.5

Darren/Jo:
Darren's blows obviously shock her, though she withstands them better than any human woman has the right to. You're definitely dealing with something here. She is about to retaliate but the strange blonde tries again frantically to help. Now that you have a better view of things you realize perhaps she is not as strong as she appeared (Jo) now that the crazed thing has a chance to ready herself.
She simply pulls away from the hair grab so that disturbingly a chunk of it remains in Josephine's fist. If it pains her she doesn't show it. Instead she gives an animalistic snarl of rage and strikes Jo hard across the chest, sending her reeling backward.

ooc: Next round! Sorry I'm in a bit of a rush. Crazier week than expected so if I miss something I do apologize.

Simon: She listens with a small look of relief but worry still hides beneath. Hopefully it stays that way. Come, let's hurry before the police arrest me. I'll need to wash this off somewhere though, and change my clothes. I don't know how I'm going to explain this to the doctor so I may need to hide until we can figure that out. There aren't many Indian women in town that I've seen, I'm probably going to stand out.

Josephine winced as she was hit, grabbing her chest and sliding back a foot. Holy crap this woman was strong!

Now she had no doubt that she was dealing with a witch, or something similar, and she stepped to the side, hoping to give the big man a better shot/angle at her, and instead of just recklessly attacking, she darted in when the big man went for another shot, and dove at the woman's legs, trying to prevent her from avoiding his attacks, and tripping her up.

Is there an "aid another" action in this game, where I roll a basic DC 10 or something attack, and instead of attacking, I grant him a +2 or something?

Chapter 8.5

The young reD head wasn't sure what to make of everthin except this crazed lady was in a house of bodies and the lovy Blonde seemed to have a similar goal. Darren used the blonde's wrestling to buy time to slip his hands into his pocket and draw up his knuckle dusters.

Darren withdrew his hands now wearing a matching pair of metallic knuckle dusters. Wanting to end this before fatigue washed him Darren drew back his fist putting all his power into his punches. His first jab connected solid to the crazed dame's face. Darren's follow up missed coming up short perhaps more from his being unprepared for the raw power his first hit had behind it.

Darren showed little sign of fatigue but the gleam in his eye showed his inner animal was enjoying this. " That's fer tha folks here, Darren said with a smirk.

Simon: The monsignor looks startled at the bloodied woman before him, nodding slowly but asking why. He will accept your need though, should you give him even a slightly good reason and in that respect it doesn't take long for Lily to change. She looks completely at a loss for words, gaping at the habit as though she wants to rip it off. At last she stammers, This feels....wrong on so many levels. All I can think of is the nuns at school who used to give me such trouble. That and this thing is going to catch fire with me in it

ooc: I'll catch you up to the others soon Simon.

Darren/Jo: Jo is more a nuisance than anything to the woman but any help helps. She takes Darren's punch well, though anger flashes in her cold eyes, and returns him one straight to the jaw, which fortunately is made of strong stuff, leaving him upright in spite of the power of the blow. Whatever she is, she's not human to hit like this.

ooc: Next round, also please roll knowledge checks to see if you can piece together theories of what she is. Even if you don't have ranks in it, as hunters you'll have some inkling if the roll is any good. Thanks!

" 'ey, pretty dame...d'ya know what this thin' is? Darren said adressing Jo before sending out two more hard jabs, the first landing but just. The second went wild as the crazy dodged.

Chapter 8.5

Darenn/Jo: The woman gets a blow from Darren in the neck, but recovers well. Her strength clearly lies in her toughness. As tempting as it is to label her a demon, there are a few things that don't add up. Unfortunately for both of you, a fight is a poor time to try to puzzle out such answers and nothing springs to mind.

Jo's shot goes wide, but the woman is unconcerned, not fearful of the firearm in the least. It should be interesting if Jo ever hits, considering it is no normal shotgun, but the woman has no way of knowing that yet. In response she clocks Darren again, hissing at Jo, When I'm done with the brute I'll rip your pretty little face off and eat it

ooc: Well the knowledge checks didn't go well...lol! Go ahead and try a spot for me both of you and roll your next round

Father Simon: Yes. For Victoria. Perhaps I don't mind that I ripped that woman's liver out after all she mutters. It's an almost comical statement considering her attire.

Soon you go back to the doctor's where you find Victoria asleep and Jo gone. A quick questioning of the doctor reveals she had asked for directions to Stalder street, an area Simon would have heard of.

The young auburn haired brawler was starting to show fatigue, his brow had sweat drops beading up, his breathing though controlled was starting to show signs of becoming labored. Darren could normally fight for hours but he had tapped his muscles for more than their usual capacity and that always took it out of him. Darren'S eyes watched his opponent for equal signs, hoping it was waning in resistance.

Hearing the bat threaten the blonde beauty was the motivation Darren needed however causing the youth's eyes to take on a harder edge. Darren dug deep and went on the offensive striking with more speed and equal force. A straight hard jab landing hard in the bat's face followed by a weaker but effective hook to the jaw and finishing with a strong uppercut. Each hit resounding, each hit backed by force and Darren's mass. Breathing hard but smirking smuggly, Darren resorts to his guard hoping the bat had enough.

"Bats, ya aint gettin' past this here brute...," Darren said feeling smug and knowing he could have fell men twice this bat's  size with the hits he landed

The woman is fatiguing too, starting to look stressed between both of your efforts, and eyeing around her as though for an escape. She is still able to take a surprising amount of damage, but looks startled by how it is affecting her. Considering her strength and the half eaten bodies around you, you wonder if this could be a ghoul...For Darren, that theory is confirmed when you spot a similar looking body in the corner, closely matching the woman you're fighting now, at least from what you can see that's left of her. Ghouls are known to take the form of the last person they've eaten. It only makes sense.

Head shots are the best course with a ghoul, though with your blessed weapons you may be able to chip away at her anyway.

Meanwhile, as you're piecing this together, she decides that perhaps Jo is the easier target and she slams her fists hard into the poor woman. Twice.

Relief broke his face as he seen equal signs of fatigue in the creature but when it turned on Jo, well that broke his straw.

Darren hand immediately flew for his jacket, gripping the cool polished handle and drew out his peacemaker. The gun gleamed as the long metal barrel reflected light as if it too was excited to end this monster. Darren stepped slightly back and pulled the trigger twice, the first shot hitting square but the second shot was devastating, winging the creature's head. Darren stood gazing past the smoke.

The possible ghoul is incredibly affected by the head shot and though she sways greatly, she's still just alive enough to withdrawal and try to run out the front door...

ooc: Normally with withdrawal one of you wouldn't get an AoO, but since you are using ranged weapons now go ahead and fire off another shot each before she gets out the front door. You can try to follow but keep in mind she's inhumanly fast so make your next shot count.

Simon:

Lily nods, readying her own gun, though with the shots firing you are wary of just bursting in. You are many things but not bullet proof. As you near the shooting increases and the front door flings open violently, revealing a fleeing woman, disheveled and riddled with wounds...

ooc: They have one more shot before you get there Simon. She's not out the door yet so within the next round you can make it to the door if you want, but keep in mind there are bullets flying.

Turning towards the man with her, she grinned and blew a hair out of her face, staring up at the errant lock with nearly crossed eyes,

"So you're Frederick, huh? Nice to meetcha! I'm Josephine Hartley!" she said, extending a hand for a shake, while leaning the shotgun to the side. "And by the by, I believe I'm here same as you, ta save or help Freddie, he got me in ta tha huntin' business.

Darren looked around and recalled the fight, it hadnt seemed like it was him doing it nor that any of this was possible, this business was still new to him and this was a new monster, Darren wondered absently if he'd every be used to it.

Chapter 8.5

As Darren slid towards the ground, Josephine looked completely confused as to what to do. She'd expected him to jump, or be afraid, or something like a normal person would be... not just nonchalantly slide to the floor. His experience in life must've been a WHOLE lot different than her own, but to be fair, she could see it. She'd had a gun in her face enough back home at the bar to not bat an eyelash too hard.

Hearing his explanation, she, instead of aiming the gun at him further, slid down the wall next to him, breathing a sigh of relief. She hated threatening people,

"Well that's good to know, Darren. So what was Freddie doing here when he disappeared?" she asked, and after a comical pause, she batted her eyes dramatically at him with a hint of a smile on her lips.

Darren's eyes looked over Jo as she slid down the wall to sit by him, his face face broke into a warm smile and he nods towards Simon before looking back to Jo. Now that he was looking, she was quite a woman, one any man would find pleasing to be around.

" Well now Blondie," Darren said with a smile and a light tone. His fatigue was leaving him and despite a few cuts and bruises Darren was starting to feel himself again. "I'd say short of Frederick 'imself sayin', I couldn't tell ye," Darren concluded before looking around and wondering of this would be his new normal.

Darren regarded the preacher and his partner and smirked, he hadn't caught all of what he said but gathered they weren't going to be turning him in. " probably should look around, mayhaps Frederick is still about...hopefully in a single piece." Darren said and looked to his new companion to see if they twould thought it'd be a fruitful task.

" Suppos'n we should have ourselves a look," Darren said as he started to move deeper in, drawing his blessed silver knuckles. He didn't know much about ghoulS but disn't want to be caught unready.

Darren moved with purpose, he'd wasn't sure if ghouls ran in pairs or packs but there seemed to be a number of bodies so it stood to reason to be ready for another confrontation. It was then that it occurred to him he didn't know his would-be partner's name yet and unless her name was Goldie, then he hadn't a clue as to what to call her by.

Darren suddenly stopped and looked to Goldie and while remaining semi-aware of his surroundings gave her as much eye contact as he could and with a smirk that exuded confidence Darren inquired," 'ey Goldie, you seem to have me at a loss. Ye know my name but I didn't catch yours?"

His tone held a questioning ring to infer the statement was more of a question.

"Are you ok?" she asked, somewhat concerned. He'd just been in a fight, and she wasn't sure if he was hurting more than he'd let on, "I'm Josephine, or Jo. I've already introduced myself to you..." she said, the worry in her tone obvious.

Darren's eyes moved to his peacemaker before looking up to Jo again," I 'ave me a peach maker but not much else. I'm not fer killin' until I started huntin' monsters...only recently got me this piece from ol' Frederick."

Something in Jo's wording kept creeping on him but with his recent lapse of forgetfulness Darren wasn't sure it hadnt been just her mind being muddled from the adrenaline rush.

" Where'n ye hail from Goldie? " Darren asked intentionally using the nickname he had used earlier, a playful light in his emerald eyes.

Glancing over towards Lily, who had been tagging along, Josephine kept her gaze solid, though Lily could see her struggling not to smile. As the long exchange happens Lily watches you two with a mixture of disbelief and frustration. She seems deeply concerned about Frederick, checking the bodies frantically.

Help me look! she gestures, moving from body to body quickly. And check upstairs! Frederick you idiot, what have you gotten into now? she mutters worriedly. The fool always had a heart of gold and two left feet. Leave it to him to get into trouble. Josephine, she turns to the woman, He has short bright red hair and usually doesn't have a beard. I haven't seen him in a few weeks though...How did you come to know him? Did he tell you to come here? she adds turning to Darren.

Simon: Lily informs you she'll join you as soon as she can and bids you be careful on your way back. As you travel back towards the doctor's you notice the streets are full of police, no doubt searching for Lily. This town is becoming quite a hot spot...By now the sun is starting to set and twilight is fast approaching.

As Darren collected himself he recalled some things about the creature and what he had read. Darren went back to look at the bodies to see of he could notice something.

"It was a ghoul and I'm not sure it did all this itself, tha killin I mean.", Darren said noticing something subtly off as he tried to reign in personal thoughts, a mans life was on the line.

"if'n it had help though, a basement may still be a good place to check or maybe a ghoul hunting ground, a gave yard." Darren was guessing as he looked more closely at the bodies, unsure if he'd gather any info.

Darren/Jo: Lily listens, nodding with a frown. Yes, I think it was a ghoul too. Probably attracted by whatever killed these poor people. If Frederick isn't here though I wonder where he is...If he survived we should have heard something and if he died he'd be here. Unless they took him for some reason her frown deepens. Looking at the bodies I think their necks were broken. Seems like a demon move to me. We need to question the neighborhood. See if anyone didn't notice anything. Last thing we need though is for someone to find the bodies. I've already got enough policemen on my back as it is she looks down at her nun's habit again with a face. I'd suggest we split up but you two seem...curious about each other she arches a dark eyebrow. And honestly Jo, good with words as you are if something happens you're a pretty rotten shot. You think you can keep him in line if I take the back street? She turns to Darren then. And you, keep her safe. I don't know you but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. If you prove untrustworthy I will reach in your gut and pull out your liver myself. It's not the first time I've done it today. Lily laughs at Jo's joke and luckily for Darren she seems quite happy and good-natured at the moment.

The canvassing goes surprisingly well. It would seem that the close proximity of the houses on this street has done you favors. After quite a bit of charming the locals you discover the neighbors have been most unhappy with the noise at the inn until recently. Apparently there were lots of thumps and bangs and taking into account the hour it happened they were none too pleased to be woken. Considering how quiet it got after that though they thought little of it.

There was a woman though, they noted, who was seen frequently entering the place. It was full of strangers of course, it was an inn, but there was something particularly noteworthy about this woman. She had raven black hair, worn long and loose, which of course was very out of fashion. She was the most beautiful woman any of them had seen, with pale white skin and a black gown that revealed more than they thought proper. Apparently her gaze was...unsettling and each person who mentions her shudders at the memory. One person is sure they saw her leave the place the night the thumps were heard, at an ungodly hour too.

Simon: The doctor, grateful for your assistance, offers you a room at his clinic to stay the night while you wait for your friends return. You also get a message from Lily sent via errand boy, that she and Josephine will be delayed with questioning so at the moment you do not fear for them even though the hour is getting later.

You find yourself laying on your bed, exhausted by the day's happenings and waiting for Lily and Jo's return. It is hard not to fall asleep...

Leaning against the wall, she brought her hands to her face, and after an unsatisfied sigh, brushed her hair out of her face, and spoke again,

" ye did good Blondie, better than I could have...and we did get some information, I assume not many ladies wear her hair like they said...its small but mor'n I'd probably get alone," Darren offered as a way of comfort, his emerald eyes looking back into Jo'S as he spoke.

" an it's not like we's alone, yet cheery friend may gain more info we didn't get," Darren added, he was terrible at comforting people but he felt he needed to try.

Chapter 8.5

"That's part of the problem!" Josephine said, shaking her head, still in her hands, "If Lily figures out more than us, I'll never hear the end of it!" she groaned aloud, knowing her feisty little friend would be giving her no end of trouble over this.

Pausing, Jo's face came out from behind her hands with a curious look on her face,

"Wait... are you trying to comfort me?" she asked, recognizing immediately that Darren was probably trying his best, but 'comforter' was not a role he was designed for...

Chapter 8.5

Darren quickly realized that Jo and Lilly had a strong history and smiles noting she was more upset at their internalized competition than anything else. Upon being confronted about comforting the youth's ears grew red and his emerald eyes flicked nervously.

" Uhhh... I thought maybe..," Darren stared before standing and trying for a tough appearance. " No, I was simply saying it wasnt for nothing," Darren lied trying to appear tough while looking about and avoiding eye contact while his ears showed a red tint.

After a moment Darren inquired," so...uh where we supposed to meet up with yer friend?"

Chapter 8.5

If Josephine was good at anything, it was reading people's body language. Seeing the reddening, and the sudden eye contact avoidance, she raised her eyebrows in shock,

"Oh my gosh, you're embarrassed about it!" she exclaimed, not seeming to mind at all about rubbing it in as her quiet laughter followed,

"Oh my gosh, that's so cute!" she giggled again, rubbing it in as she reached out and tried to squeeze his cheek with another bright smile and laugh, "The big tough guy, all put on the spot by the simple act of comforting!" she giggled, reaching out and trying to grab his hands and put them on her shoulders, and then she wiggled her hips a little, a mischievous glint in her eyes as she locked his gaze with her own,

"Do I make you nervous, Mr. Calhoun?" she asked softly, her gaze intense, and the corners of her lips tilting upwards into the beginnings of a smile as they 'danced' slowly around. She needed this little run off of stress and steam, and she was taking full advantage.

The young red head's face brighten to a matching  hue. It was quickly apparent that Darren hadn't had a lot of opportunities to become comfortable with teasing but his body language shifted quickly once they started 'dancing'.

Darren's face up to the dancing had shifted a few times, each time Darren attempted to mask it with a smile. The youth obviously not learned to raise a proper poker face.

'Dancing' at first, he was rigid and after a moment or two he even tried to match Jo's  movements, his emerald eyes finally resting on her's. The youth seemingly surrendering to the moment. Upon hearing her question, Darren smiled, stammered and cleared his throat before he said," ahh not you so much as..."

Darren's  eyes looked thoughtful," I'm not so well versed in being personable." Darren's hands moved cautiously to her hips, a smile present with only a hint of any awkwardness left.

Smiling in response, a bit surprised as he seemed to grow almost instantly more comfortable, Josephine felt his hands move around her hips, a VERY forward move for this time she would guess, and she raised an eyebrow,

"Interesting... interesting indeed..." she breathed softly, bringing her lips close to his as she spoke, her eyes flicking down to his, and back up to his eyes. After a breathless moment, she pulled away, and started to walk again, that mischievous look back in her eyes, but she kept her back turned to him, to allow him a moment, and to hide her own smile.

"What's our next move?" she asked over her shoulder, being suddenly 'business' to keep him off-balance. She moved slowly enough that if he reached out, he could touch her, but she moved indeed. She was curious what his response would be.

Chapter 8.5

Darren had got caught up in the moment, his body moving now more on impulse as he moved to close the gap and the as quickly as his desire rose, Jo pulled away and turned to walk away. Darren waant sure just how he felt but this was twice now he'd been checkled by Jo and in the same night as meeting the michievious minx.

The youth hadn't had the time to sort through emotions nor proper procedures  but with his emotions high and his body calling for resolve, Darren grabbed Jo's hand as she looked back inquiring of their next move and pulled her back into an embrace bringing his lips to hers.

It could have been seconds or minutes bit when Darren pulled back his emerald eyes looking at Jo filled with mirth. Then realization dawned on his face and Darren moved to break contact. "Pardon my forwardness Goldie, I didn't mean any.. uhh disrespect, Darren said as he tried to recover, unsure as to where his actions would lead.

As Josephine was pulled roughly back, she stumbled into Darren's arms, her hands landing on his chest for balance, and then he kissed her, and her eyes closed instinctively. When he finally broke contact, she looked up into his eyes as he spoke, and she whispered in response,

"Shh..." before pressing her lips gently back into his. Sure, he was unrefined, and a little awkward, but she liked the rough nature of him... the straightforward approach. She could work with that, and frankly, her emotions were in control right now, and not her mind, so she went with the moment, being pulled up into his powerful arms. He was acting like a real man, and she liked nothing in the world more than that.

As they broke contact again, she leaned slightly back to take in his expression more fully, and her hazel green orbs took his in, flashing in excitement as her heart fluttered momentarily. Her hands were still resting on his muscular chest, and she was a tiny, vulnerable creature in his massive hands, leaving things up to him entirely in the moment, breathless as she was.

Feeling Darren's hand slide onto her shoulder, Josephine dropped her shoulder a bit, smoothly releasing the pressure, and slipped her hand up into his, pulling it away into a less controlling position, spinning around and tugging for him to follow with a smile,

"Don't worry about it. Let's just get this information shared with the others, and we'll catch up on all of this stuff a bit later." she smiled disarmingly, and tugged at his hand again, before letting go and slipping away, and dancing a few feet ahead of him in the direction of Simon and Lily (or at least where she last knew they'd be).

As she walked, her mind raced, thinking through the last few minutes, as well as the information (or lack thereof) about Frederick. Things were getting complicated, but she needed to stay focused, or at least the best amount she could.

"I look forward ta it," Darren admitted while he followed, unsure as to their destination only who would be there.

It didnt bother him about their lack of knowledge, Darren was used to winging it and felt they'd get some more information in time. Darren was worris for Frederick but he knew if anyone could make it, it was him. A thought about checking local graveyards may yield results but that was only if it was the ghoul who had been the target and evidence said otherwise.

Darren/Jo:

You find Lily on the next street over, thankfully still free and out of police hands. She grins brightly at seeing you and rushes over. Still intact I see. Good she gives Darren an approving nod and you get the feeling she's relieved to see Jo safe. Any luck? I had a little but the habit was a bit of a distraction she looks down at her attire with a sigh. They kept shoving lemonade and cakes at me, trying to be hospitable. Got so ridiculous by the fourth house I started hiding them. Here, take these. I don't know what to do with them she pulls four small cakes wrapped in napkins from her pockets and holds them up for you both to take. I would have saved you some lemonade too but that wouldn't have gone over well. Had to take the bullet on that one. I feel as though I've drowned she wrinkles her nose. Now, on to business. I heard about a dark haired woman but she didn't seem to match the ghoul's description. We have another player in our midst. Any luck on your end?

"We got SOME luck, but not much." Josephine said, rapidly filling Lily in on the details they'd figured out.

Beyond that, she was curious, and chomped on a cake while she spoke, not minding the silliness of it all,

Darren had caught up to the bubbly woman and as she took off to meet Lilly, Darren couldn't help but smile. Jo's energy was infectious and he liked how affectionate she was around her friends.

When Lilly looked Darren's way he straightened and nodded relaxing when he noticed her approval. " my pleasure," Darren said, emerald eyes flicking to Jo and smiling.

The youth gratefully took the cake and ate, he often felt hungry after he fought and thought nothing more of it.

" 'he's 're good, 'hanks," Darren said through a full mouth forgetting his manners. The youth listened and after clearing his mouth offered a pardon for his behavior as an after thought.

" hard to say, I'm still rather green, far as I know we could search nearby grave yards...mayhaps the ghoul had been Frederick's target...but it seems more sinister..., Darren offered knowing he wasn't strong for planning.

"I don't know if I want to search graveyards... if Frederick is in there, we don't WANT to find him, and if he isn't, we just wasted time." she said, picking another piece of cake out of Darren's hair with a look of incredulity. How the hell did he get it up there?!

Pushing away the thoughts, she turned back towards Lily,

"We can always pursue this Eleanor Rosings angle, though I wouldn't know how to." Turning to groan at Darren still getting food everywhere, she asked Lily,

"Didn't you see the signs? Don't feed the animals?" she teased, sticking out her tongue at her friend with a soft giggle. With a genuine look, however, she whispered,

"He might need it though, he took quite a beating..." she was concerned, but hiding it the best she could. She knew better than doting on Darren while Lily was around.

Chapter 8.5

Seeing Darren's confusion, Josephine knew she was screwing up, but there was so much in the air right now, she didn't want to upset Lily, she definitely didn't want Lily murdering Darren (which she would, most certainly), and she... well she didn't know WHAT she thought or felt at the moment! It had all happened so fast, but watching poor Darren, he was so clueless as to what was going on, and what he'd done... he hadn't meant anything by it, he was just being pleasant, and simple.

Simple was good, simple was safe. After her horrifying experience at the hands of the demon a while back, Josephine had a slight inkling of fear tinging everything she experienced. That pain had been pure horror, and she couldn't deal well with it. In some ways, Darren felt like the safe choice, and she was needing that, at least right now.

But him revealing what had happened to Lily? She hadn't planned on that. It made sense, sure, it was straightforward, like she knew he was, but now?

But looking at him, poor Darren, he wasn't being dishonest or mean-spirited, or anything. He wasn't trying to brag, or rub anything in anyone's face, he was just trying to hold her hand, like a sweetheart. Boys back home were sometimes like that, and it brought a sense of familiarity to her heart. He was trying to make eye contact and smile, despite the unfair situation she'd put him in. He, in his moment of need, was trying to take care of her feelings, however that made him feel.

Her heart just melted. This poor guy was good to his core, that much she knew right off the bat. Was she really so selfish that she wanted both Lily AND him so badly that she was going to do this? Would this drive Lily away? Would this get him KILLED by Lily?

Josephine's mind was racing, so she instinctively shot back into defensive-social cover up mode, one of her worst habits,

"Oh that's nice!" she said about his statement about his mother, "My mother and I are very close... Maybe I'll show you her bar one of these days, if we get any downtime. Do you like to drink at all?" she smiled pleasantly with her question, changing the subject.

Inwardly, however, she was furious at herself, being so selfish.

Damnit, Josephine! Straighten up! Be open! Honest! Fair! What is WRONG with you!? but she couldn't. She tried to force words past her smile, but her practiced control took over and clamped her mouth shut, keeping herself silent. She was trapped inside her own head, just wondering... thinking... planning...

You two seem to be getting along quickly...That's your business not mine Jo, but keep in mind we still don't know the man and until Frederick vouches for him just...be careful. In fact, after that even....be careful. I can attest for the consequences of a romance pursued too quickly. Unless I misread the situation perhaps? she tilts her head questioningly but there is no doubt in her eyes.

It's probably surprising to Darren how blunt she is but Josephine knows Lily tells things as they are. Now, ghoul wise I won't waste time at a graveyard yet. My theory is the thing was attracted by the bodies and ghouls usually don't make their own dinners if you know what I mean. Something else probably killed those people first and the ghoul was attracted. That woman could be a demon. We need to identify her quickly. You had a name, we just need to figure out where she lives. Simon knows this area well, he can probably help us find someone to find someone

Darren, you see she has long black hair and though you could tell she was a native before it is that much more apparent now.

As they approached, and Lily took off her nun's habit, Josephine couldn't help it, and ran her hand through her friend's hair, whispering,

"You have such beautiful hair, I can't stand it!" she smiled, before turning back to the others with rapt attention...

...rapt attention, for Josephine of course, meaning hardly being able to pay attention. Simon was very direct with his words, however, and that made things easier for Jo. Nodding at what he said, Josephine offered an idea,

"Alright, Darren here is about as good at bodyguarding as anybody can be, so we can leave him with Victoria. Simon, you and Lily probably want a little time together, so you can go out and gather some information on this Eleanor Rosings. I can..." she paused, slightly, but then continued, "I guess I can stay here and keep Darren company, just in case he needs help at all. You know, defending, and stuff." she said keeping her gaze from landing on Lily's. She knew the second her native friend caught her glance she was doomed, so she was suddenly very busy fidgeting with the hem of her clothing.

Darren followed and wasn't too suprised to see Lillian was a native. Having dealt with his fair share of prejudice, Darren wasn't too quick to judge and having seen her heart was in the right place didn't feel the need to label her.

Once inside and seeing the eyeless woman Darren looked away, he could stomach it, it had just been jarring. After a moment, he turned back and listened to the others. The plan seemed sound and Darren knew he was more of a fighter than one who cold glean information, afterall, it was easier to glean Knowledge when you could read people which Darren was bad at.

" Seems like a good course of action, though you think someone would come for her? She seems an unlikely target as injured as she is," Darren ob servers looking to Jo and noting more of uncomfortable behavior he'd miss if he wasn't looking.

Chapter 8.5

Lily smiles at Jo's compliment, clearly amused.

At Simon's suggestion she gives a nod but sighs. I suppose that's what I get for ripping someone's liver out. Wish I could at least remember it she adds with a frown. Alright, off with you three then. Be safe though. Whoever this Eleanor woman is, she's clearly bad news. If she is too much for you, come back and get me.

Should no one have further business there, you head off to find news of Eleanor. Fortunately Simon has many contacts and his dealings with the church are especially useful as their net is wide and they have even further contacts.

It doesn't take long to hear tell of this Miss Rosings. Apparently she is the neighbor of a churchgoer who has complained to a priest about her seemingly worldly ways. She entertains strangers at all times of the night, alone and unchaperoned, she dresses scandalously, and has the coldest eyes the woman had ever seen. It is simple enough to find an address from this information and if you wish it you find yourselves on the outskirts of the city, a tall dark victorian home looms on a hill. The nearest house is not horribly close, but well within view of it. No doubt it is the churchgoer who complained. She would certainly have a good vantage of the comings and goings of it.
The house itself has an iron gate around it with sharp points though it should be manageable to climb unless one is extraordinarily clumsy.

ooc: Let me know the game plan and make any appropriate rolls

ooc: Sorry, I thought I implied that Lily would stay with Victoria and the three of you would go talk to this Eleanor together. Lily says, "Off with you three then." I can see why it would be easy to miss though, so my apologies.

ooc: Ok, hopefully Jo will post soonish (not that I'm one to talk about posting considering my flakyness...) go ahead and roll bluffs everyone and let me know your intentions. When you get to the door it will be opened by a manservant, should you stick to the subterfuge route. So think on what you will say and do and post accordingly. Also, go ahead and roll spots while you're at it.

Chapter 8.5

ooc: Josephine is a bit busy and asked me to post on her behalf.

Simon/Jo/Darren:

The three of you are met at the door by a manservant with quite a sneer on his face. Josephine, ever the charmer of course, runs through the tale of collecting for charity with expertise and though he still looks like a grump, he grudgingly lets you enter. By now it is starting to get late, but Jo's excuses of seeing the light on and hoping for a bit of water at the very least after such a long day of collecting alms does the trick. Soon you find yourselves in a fine parlor. Everything is immaculate and what's more there are quite a few exotic artifacts encased in glass throughout the room. Whoever lives here has traveled. You also see a massive painted portrait of who you assume is the lady of the house. A dark haired beauty with skin as white as snow. The piercing eyes of the painting seem to stare at you as you sit on the velvet couch, awaiting word on your hostess and your drinks.

ooc: I'll give you guys a sec to decide if you want to try to sneak or just talk to her, etc.

Chapter 8.5

The drinks arrive from the snob faced manservant and eventually the woman of the house arrives. As you wait, Simon can't help but notice the painting looks increasingly familiar, then as the mistress of the house enters, you realize why with a chill.
Ah it's the priest again. And a new wench eh? What happened to your squaw? she chuckles. To Simon's shock he suddenly recognizes the face in the painting as its subject glides gracefully into the room. Hecate.

Of course Darren and Jo have no inkling of who she is yet, but every hair on your body seems to stand up and it's all you can do not to run right there. The pure feeling of power is intense.

Chapter 8.5

Simon put his coffee down as the realization dawned on him. "Hecate, I should have known you would be involved. You will not think baddly of me if my companions go unnamed?" Turning to his comrades, "Allow me to present the Queen of all witches, Hecate. As for Lily, she is very close by indeed. I'm sure you remember what else she is as well."

Simon stood and looked the demon in her eyes, fearless because of Faith. "You will also forgive my being blunt. You have, through your agent, started a personal war with Lily, myself, and my comrades. Whatever truce we had you have broken. Since I know your name..." He held he Rosary to her, his holy symbol. He spoke in a clear firm voice, "Hecate, Queen of the witches, the one who stands before you speaks not with his own power, but with the power of Jesus Christ All Mighty Savior of mankind. In his name and authority I command you, release our friend's eyes or be banished back to Satan's domain."

Simon recites scripture in Latin, focusing on the Rosary.

The woman laughs at Simon's attempts, which, unfortunately do nothing. I'm afraid I'm too much for your powers little man. And if Lily were here, it would be quite interesting to see who would win. Good thing she's not or half the block could be torn down and I do like my little house she purrs. Now, I heard about your little witch's unfortunate incident. That was not my doing, Bethseda acted alone. If you stir me too much though I will react so watch yourself she arches a brow. Now sit. Drink your coffee. You obviously came expecting someone else, my alias perhaps? What is it you all want?

Chapter 8.5

Simon, realizing the command had no effect, reverts to defensive. He prays aloud, reciting the 23rd Psalm "...yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for though art with me, thy rod and they staff they comfort me." Then repeats it in Latin.

Casting Shield of Faith

He stood fast. "You have no more power over me than I have over you. Beware this foe, my comrades."

I cannot remember why we are here, sorry. I forgot we already have Victoria's eyes, again I apologize. Some help from my friends would be appreciated.
