Chapter 9: Northward

It takes a few days to make it to the nearest train station. For Penny, the trip home is a hollow one. Kate's letter still folded in your purse, it's hard not to rip it out and read it over and over. Cas should have let you say goodbye. It was all so sudden, so unexpected, that no matter how touching the letter was it still left you feeling empty. She did promise to be back, and that was something. It would have to be. At least she left you her phone, with a laughing message that maybe she'd find a way to call you on it. It was a kind memento if nothing else.

When Ian had found out what happened, seen how upset you were, he was the epitome of kindness. He stayed by your side, comforting you better than most people could have. The man had his own losses after all and no one understood better than he.

For Alice, this is an uncomfortable group to be in. Emma glowers at you any chance she gets whilst Ian and Penny are haunted by losses too fresh to discuss. You feel suddenly alone no matter the people at your side, though you've been alone before and are made of such tough stuff that you'll wait out any somber brooding these folk can throw your way.

Getting on the train three days later is almost cathartic for everyone. A literal leaving behind of all the wretched partings you've just had. Ian tries to be cheerful for Penny's sake, laughing and joking in a pale imitation of his former self. Still, any display of happiness, false or not, is comforting from the man though as you board he sees a raven haired woman with two young boys that makes his face drain of color. Coira will haunt him for a while it seems.

Thanks to Penny's assets you are able to procure your own private sleeping car which has plush embroidered benches to ride during the day and fold out bunk beds at night. Ian takes one of the top ones, gesturing to Alice to take the other when Emma complains of her back not being able to climb up such a monstrous thing. The privacy is nice but with the tense silences you all find yourselves wandering the train frequently just to get a welcome distraction. Your car is shared by 3 other sleeping compartments, the aisle dividing them so that there's two on either side and each is closed off with fine wooden walls and a sliding pocket door. Your neighbors, so to speak, consist of a small family of four, a snobbish solitary gentleman with a great deal of money for his own arrangements, and a frail elderly woman who doesn't quite seem all there, accompanied by her young guardian, a friendly woman of about twenty.

There are several cars arranged like this, though the further up the train you go the cheaper the accommodations. Many have to sit in open seating, crammed together uncomfortably and once again you're grateful for Penny's money. Past these is the luxurious dining car and another that seems to be a lounge area and bar. Ian especially seems interested in this, the poor man has a lot to drink about though he stays mostly sober considering the company.

The first couple days of travel are spent with only a little polite chit chat, wounds too fresh for prolonged conversation. Emma seems to be dying inside, the socialite in her is loathing this silence but she hardly has anyone to talk to. She does chat a bit with the family sharing your car and even Alice is surprised how sweet she is with the two children, a boy and girl of about seven and five years of age. She seems almost grandmotherly and gives them peppermints and tells them stories. The actions are strangely natural on her and though you know she's a witch who was once in league with a demon, it's clear she has a capacity to love in spite of it. Yes, it's a jarring contradiction.

During this time the staff are very attentive, particularly to the passengers with money and most of all to the snobbish man who is extremely demanding and rude. Thankfully he stays in his car most of the time but when he does poke his mustached head out it's all you can do to keep from smacking it. When you do see the staff though, they are a bit skittish at times and they look strangely tired and when you go to the dining car you hear whispers from other passengers of how hard it is to sleep with so much thumping at night and that they fully plan to write the train-line to complain when they get home.

By now it's the second night and you're all crammed in your bunks. It's a bit surprising for Ian to be in with so many women but he easily accepts the pretense of being Penny's husband should she be concerned with propriety. The rumble and shaking of the train is oddly soothing and considering how much you've been up to as late it's not hard to fall asleep.

ooc: Listen checks please and let me know if you have anything in particular you want to have done during those two days.

Chapter 9: Northward

Alice for her part accepts the truce with Emma. She was a part of the group, Penny had made that plain, and Alice would stop trying to get under her skin. It turns into a cool de'Tante, where they might scowl at each other, but that is as far as it goes.

Alice is restless. The sleeping car is new, she was used to being in coach. It is a comfort but it is also a trap. Too much comfort can lead to complacency. Alice walks the train, over and again. She pays attention to everything, looking for small things out of place. She is learning from Penny in that regard. The man with the mustache seemed a challenge and Alice decided to have a bit of fun with him.

She unbuttoned her blouse and bent over in front of him, letting him have peaks. It was the kind of thing she found thrilling, especially with a man like this. She knew he was a hard nut to crack and thus cracking him became more intriguing. When she had the opportunity she would brush against him. In the tight corridors she would turn her back to him but push against him as he passed by. If he looked at her she would smile in a way that let him know she was both intentionally and flirtatious.

Otherwise she is just vigilant. She makes sure she sleeps when someone else is awake, wanting to always have someone awake.

Chapter 9: Northward

While riding on the train, Penny was more subdued, lost in her contemplations. She was remembering and missing Kate, her friend from the future, her long-lost and newly discovered mother. She lamented the loss of a life together as mother and daughter, stolen by Chronos and Belial, and regretted missing all that they still had to talk about and do together now, but for the all-consuming life of a hunter and Kate's abrupt return to the year 2013. As she admitted to Ian when he consoled her, it felt as though she'd lost her mother twice. She could only hope they would, in time, be reunited.

She also turned over her feelings for Ian. Alice had, in her brash American way, made their mutual affections known, made them a real matter between them. Yet it was an unspoken one, kept quiet by Penny's timid uncertainty and Ian's second grief for the figment of Coira, and this introduced a new and awkward element to their relationship. Certainly, there was more sensitivity and understanding. Still, Penny was not sure how to deal with it. It was not a good match as Father and her class would like it, met at a society ball, arranged for her benefit, to a man of high station and, better yet, great wealth, and worse, he was a Scotsman. Penny knew Father would veritably explode with rage, and the thought gave her a rebellious thrill. Not a good basis for a relationship, however. Nor was Ian a dashing, charming chivalrous gentleman as in the books and poems she'd read as a girl. He was not even like her doctors, clinical, controlled, and safe. No, he was a rough, low-born rogue, charming in his own way, brave and caring, a good friend and companion through hard times and hard battles, the sort she could always rely on and trust. She'd thought about suggesting Ian pose as her brother, but when it was assumed they were married, she couldn't bring herself to object. It seemed right, somehow.

So Penny mused as she relaxed in her seat on the train, while reading, studying, and working on her cross-stitch, or simply gazing out the window at the rugged, still-untamed American countryside rolling rapidly past.

But it wasn't long before her analytical brain ached for a problem to solve, if only to take her mind off the more complex matters of the heart. In the close confines of the train, she'd had ample opportunity to observe her fellow passengers and the train staff, to overhear what they said, and to wonder at odd incidents. Why were the servants so tired and furtive? Why did the train bump more at night than in the day?

Chapter 9: Northward

Alice's flirtations do not go unnoticed, though the man seems laughably flustered about them. He still has the same air of snobbishness, the same haughty expressions but when you flirt he is clearly distracted and quite grumpy with himself for it, looking away quickly and then sneaking peeks again only to shoo you away in irritation. It is most fun. Ian notices your game and finds it hilarious, no doubt a welcome distraction from recent events.

Meanwhile Penny's investigations bring up much. The family of four are from Vermont and they are returning from a trip to California to clear up a mining dispute. It seems the father is newly rich and not quite sure how to handle it. It's plain in everything from their simple clothes to the way he uncertainly addresses the servants, self conscious about asking for things even now.

The mustached snob is a professor of some kind, but he's clearly from old money and used to getting what he wants. It's amusing though how shy he is with women and you gather it is a failing he tires of. He's much more comfortable ordering women around then talking to them and any attempts at conversation do not fare well.

The elderly woman, named Mrs. Turning, is a widow of some years, the younger woman, Tabitha, is her granddaughter and she easily explains that she's brought the woman to live with her and her parents now that her mind is going. Mrs. Turning herself seems quite out of it most times but on occasion her eyes clear and they seem to see everything with alarming sharpness. She will from time to time make incredibly perceptive remarks out of nowhere that stun you. There is more to this woman than most realize, you can feel it in your bones. A particular remark about you and Ian runs through your mind. Upon introducing yourselves as a married couple she gives a little smirk and says, Perhaps in time my dears. Perhaps in time. When Tabitha asks what she means though her eyes glaze over and she's silent again.  Yes, this woman is clearly complicated. Even Emma watches her with a frown over her knitting on the occasions both sleeping car doors are open.

As for the literal bumps in the night, it's not hard to get more information. It seems that things are being moved around without anyone supposedly doing it. Passengers complain of being incredibly cold at times despite the fact that the train is quite warm. Some even have nightmares, waking others with their fitful sleep and wandering the train in an effort to shake off whatever it was they saw. Most of the trouble seems to stem a few cars up and you overhear some servants complaining about the dining car in particular. Your money is that's where it all comes from.

Chapter 9: Northward

Alice continues to flirt, bordering on shamelessly, but she is careful not to cross that line. She simply pushes him, a little at a time, daring him to do something. If he does she will enjoy herself, after all she is the one who is trying to get the attention. If he does nothing she will push just a little harder. She will even go so far as to "stumble" into his room on "accident" just to see if she can prod him to action.

Of course if Penny needs her help, she will drop her game. It is just a game, after all, a way of passing the time and keeping her mind active.

Chapter 9: Northward

Penny had been discreetly disapproving of Alice's antics with Professor Delapore, feeling they were wanton and unnecessary. She looked sniffily away whenever she happened upon them in the aisle, yet still watched when she thought she wouldn't be noticed. She paid more attention to Alice, curious and bemused. Was this courtship among the lower classes and Americans? She took notes.

Ignoring the professor otherwise, Penny spoke more with Tabitha and Mrs Turning, whom she suspected to be psychic, perhaps even a genuine one like Victoria. Her current senility made it a sadly lost talent. She also talked with the family from Vermont, proving herself not too bad with children, and subtly tried to coach their parents in matters of wealth, the importance of remaining grateful, generous, and humble.

When she felt the sudden cold chill, her breath misting in the air despite the desert heat outside, Penny knew exactly what unknown passenger was on this train. With it, an excited thrill ran up her spine. A ghost! Just the thing she needed. The dining car was surely the centre of the activity, but the ghost's anchor to this world was a mystery. Surely there were no bones on board the train. A familiar possession, perhaps? She'd tried asking about the strange occurrences and any unusual cargo or history the train might have.

Glancing out the window, she glimpsed Alice, no doubt returning from teasing Professor Delapore, her blouse brazenly unbuttoned. Unconsciously, Penny closed a hand to her neck, and slipped free two buttons to reveal her collarbone. Well, it was rather warm, and she'd seen far more revealed on the television in 2013. She leaned over toward Ian, failing to achieve whatever Alice was doing, and asked 'Mr Shaw, would you like to join me for dinner in the dining car this evening?'

Chapter 9: Northward

Alice is shocked but mirthfully so at the sudden change in Penny. Unbuttoning her blouse? Leaning over to tease Iam? This would be interesting if it weren't so...difficult for Penny.
Alice stood leaning against the doorway smirking. Being the take charge kind of person she was she gave Ian a look and a head motion that meant Penny would catch up. She ignored Emma completely, sitting across from Penny.

"It seems I am a bad influence. If you are going to do this experiment, you should at least get the variables right." This experiment is a cover, a way to let Penny remain comfortable and so that she won't think she is being teased. She buttoned her own collar back up. "I am your friend, right? You want Ian's attention, and I can help you. Now watch me." She sat up, shoulders back, breast thrust out but she turned her body slightly at the waist. "Note the lines here," she drew her finger across her shoulders, "and here," another from chin to bellybutton., "are straight but I am slightly off center. Now buttons, no less than three, my dear. If our experiment is to be successful you must show at least the hint of cleavage. Men LOVE cleavage, they cannot help it, the mere sight of the line between a woman's breasts makes a man's mouth water."

She allowed Penny the opportunity to copy her. "Now when you are at dinner, the experiment will need to focus on your subject, in this case Ian. Ian is indeed a man who appreciates a comely woman, and you Penny are comely. You have pretty features, and a nice figure. You must maintain eye contact, even when his eyes drift downward, and they will drift, he cannot help it, men are like that. This experiment is not to judge his reactions but your own. If you enjoy his attentions, then you know what you like. If not, then the experiment is still a success as you will be able to alter your behavior accordingly. I believe, though, that Ian's attention in particular with make you feel warm, here" she put her hand on her belly, "and here," lower to her pelvis, "which is natural. Your body will be responding to him like...it does for the doctors. Don't be afraid Penny, you are taking a wonderful step. I am glad I am here to help you." Especially since Kate cannot be here to help you with this.

"At dinner, do something innocuous, like drop your napkin or a spoon. When you go to pick it up make sure yo are watching him because he will be watching you. Now git girl, and have fun. I know your ... I know Kate would approve, she is a master at this."

Chapter 9: Northward

Throughout all this, Penny had of course grown increasingly embarrassed and flustered.

Mary-Alice Reussoe Conner:
"It seems I am a bad influence. If you are going to do this experiment, you should at least get the variables right."

'Variables?' How many times and in how many ways did such an experiment need to be performed?

Mary-Alice Reussoe Conner:
"I am your friend, right? You want Ian's attention, and I can help you. Now watch me." She sat up, shoulders back, breast thrust out but she turned her body slightly at the waist. "Note the lines here," she drew her finger across her shoulders, "and here," another from chin to bellybutton., "are straight but I am slightly off center."

Penny was growing a little confused and warm by Alice's demonstrations, but, regardless, perhaps unthinkingly, she'd shifted ever so slightly to imitate her movements. It was not unlike fencing training.

Mary-Alice Reussoe Conner:
"Now buttons, no less than three, my dear. If our experiment is to be successful you must show at least the hint of cleavage. Men LOVE cleavage, they cannot help it, the mere sight of the line between a woman's breasts makes a man's mouth water."

'I've been to a ball, I am aware.' Penny managed to mutter testily, aware how fashions in the ballroom could be rather more... French. Not her fashions, of course, but others. 'I know of décolletage and the... elevating effects of corsets.'

Mary-Alice Reussoe Conner:
"Now when you are at dinner, the experiment will need to focus on your subject, in this case Ian. Ian is indeed a man who appreciates a comely woman, and you Penny are comely. You have pretty features, and a nice figure."

'I do? But—'

Mary-Alice Reussoe Conner:
"You must maintain eye contact, even when his eyes drift downward, and they will drift, he cannot help it, men are like that. I am glad I am here to help you."

Penny had by now turned as red as a tomato, but her widening eyes and mouth, slowly opening and closing in protest, rather more resembled a fish suffocating in air. 'But—'

Mary-Alice Reussoe Conner:
"At dinner, do something innocuous, like drop your napkin or a spoon. When you go to pick it up make sure yo are watching him because he will be watching you. Now git girl, and have fun. I know your ... I know Kate would approve, she is a master at this."

Since Penny had been born out of wedlock and a hundred years too early, the Victorian-raised woman wasn't so sure this was a compliment.

She straightened her skirt over her wobbly knees, and finally found voice enough to respond fully to Alice, however irritably. 'While I am sure your advice will be useful if ever I need to... make a pretence in a case,' she conceded, yet remaining doubtful it would ever really occur. Back-pedalling frantically, she was back to being a prim and proper Victorian lady. 'Such is not my plan with Ian tonight. In any case, the poor man still mourns Coira... No, I believe there is a haunting in the dining car, and I wish for us to hunt the ghost together.'

That was, after all, a Hunter's idea of a date.

She rose and efficiently collected her weapons from the overhead luggage compartment, and bravely lifted her skirt to slip her pistol into her garter holster, which held up a weapon as well as lacing stockings on shapely legs. She put her EMF meter in her purse. 'Wish me luck.' She strode out the door...

...then back in again to declare 'For your information, the angel Castiel appeared to me when I was in the shower. I have felt warm.' That, that was entirely for the sake of competition. She marched out again, a woman on a mission, just not the one expected of her. Outside, she hastily rebuttoned her shirt, then undid three buttons, then shook her head and rebuttoned them all. Madness.

Alice nodded, "Luck then," she indicated. In her mind, But not the kind you are asking for, my dear.

She spoke to no one in particular, "If that girl were any more up tight she wouldn't be able to take a squat."

Chapter 9: Northward

ooc: Hahahaha! You guys are hilarious!

Alice's attempts with Professor Delapore yield increasingly animated results. The man is terrified of women and when you "accidentally" enter his car he actually squawks in shock, blushing scarlet and shooing you out in a hurry. It gets so bad that he's taken to looking around corners, trying to scout you out ahead of time and on the occasions he sees you he heads the other direction. It is marvelous fun.

Meanwhile Penny's investigation into the dining car yield vague results. Most staffers dismiss any questions you have but one woman, a plump thing in her fifties, is eager to gossip with you. Apparently a few years ago a young woman bound for her wedding, choked to death in front of everyone, much to the scandal of the rail line. It was covered up as best it could but there are many staff members who remember her and what's more, some claim they still see her from time to time when the car is empty and they go to pass through in the night. Some see a lone woman bent over a table in the darkness but as soon as the lights flick on she is gone. Of course lately something is making her angry they think she confides with the air of a woman excited over gossip. Things keep getting moved around and tossed about, all over the train too! Though don't you worry none miss, I'm sure it's just one of the staffers pullin a prank! My bet is on Jaffers. He runs the bar at the dining car ya see. She was friendliest with him

Later, as Penny approaches Ian:

Ian doesn't seem to notice Penny's two undone buttons, but then the man is used to far more exposed on a woman than collarbones. It only serves to make Alice's instruction that much more...intriguing, if horrifying.

As for the invitation, he readily accepts with a grin and heads off to get a
pre-dinner drink at the bar, fortunately leaving you both semi alone with only the witch for company. She busily works on her cross stitch, seemingly ignoring the two of you until Penny leaves and Alice's last comment earns a surprised laugh from the woman. Poor dear has been a spinster too long I think she chuckles, seemingly forgetting your frosty little feud in her mirth. If anyone could coax those legs apart though it's the Scotsman. He could convince mine if I were twenty years younger she goes back to her cross stitch again, innocent as the world.

Chapter 9: Northward

Walking away from the compartment and down the aisle, trying to forget all the recent awkwardness, Penny realised she was taking a risk leaving Alice Conner and Emma Bently alone together. She contemplated returning, inviting them to accompany her, but finally elected to trust them. She'd spoken to them both, Alice had accepted the need to keep Emma on their side, and a clear détente between them had begun. It should be helpful to not have her watching over them constantly.

*

Passing through the door, surveying the dining car, Penny was mildly irritated to see Ian at the bar... Actually, after her encounter with Alice, she could do with a drink herself. She joined him there, calling for a white wine from Jaffers. Whatever she'd wished to say to Ian had been quite chased out of her head by Alice's advice. 'Forgive me, Miss Conner wished to share some, mm, observations.' she began, then gave him a more careful, inquisitive look, in the manner of testing him. 'What do you observe?' She cocked her head, indicating the dining car.

Alice: The witch does indeed take watch, though she looks a bit grumpy that her wonderful joke fell on deaf ears.

Penny: Ian finishes his drink and orders another but answers you with deceptive nonchalance. Well, I definitely felt a cold spot but it could have been a draft. Over by that table there he nods his head to indicate a window table that is currently empty. Most folk are talking about the usual things. Who's marryin who, which of them is richer than the other, that sort of thing, but a couple of them are on edge. I think they may have seen somethin he again nods to indicate, this time a young man of about twenty or so sitting, speaking to another, similar in age. Judging by their appearances you would peg them as brothers though it's hard to say for sure. They keep eyein that empty table and they look jumpy as a whore in confession. I caught a few words here and there about 'the woman' but it's getting kinda loud in here he makes a face.

Chapter 9: Northward

'Indeed.' Penny began, trying not to remark upon Ian's particular choice of idiom. She followed his gaze to the empty table and the two men watching it. How peculiar. She had a couple of guesses on what their interest might be, but Penny wasn't in the business of guessing. She needed more information. Looking back to Ian, she murmured 'Given how many people died in the construction of this great railway, I shan't be surprised if there's a ghost every few hundred miles, trapped between the cold iron tracks. Imagine those poor souls, forever riding the rails...'

'But in this case...'
She leaned her head closer to him, in the manner of wife and husband speaking discreetly perhaps, and said softly 'I heard from Mrs Arkwright, the cook, a rumour of a young woman travelling on this very train a few years back, bound for her wedding to a man she hadn't met. It seems she choked on an oyster in the middle of dinner, and died in agony in front of a dozen witness. The rail company was scandalised, of course, covered it up as best they could. Yet, the servants whisper, from time to time, late at night when the car is empty and the passengers are asleep, they catch a glimpse of a woman leaning over a table. That table, I shan't wonder. Then in the light, she is gone. And now, they say, things are being hurled about. It seems she is angered.' Penny had a good voice for ghost stories, florid, enticing, and mysterious, as if imparting a secret, drawing the tale out, bringing the listener along with her.

Now leaving Ian hanging, she waved over the bartender, raising her voice 'Oh, Jaffers. My husband and I heard a rumour of a bride-to-be dying in this very car. I must say, it sounds very ominous. Do you know what happened?'

Chapter 9: Northward

Jaffers, an aging man of some mixed ethnicity judging by his light brown skin and dark hair, looks at you in surprise. Arkwright's been at it again eh? he grumbles, drying a champagne flute. It's not wise to gossip over the dead. Needless to say the poor young thing choked to death years ago. There's not much more to say and if Arkwright is telling you tales about all this ruckus that's been going on being because of her, well she's pulling a fast one on you. It's a prankster, nothing more. His face is polite but there's a steel in his eyes that says the subject is a sensitive one for him. Even in death, the man is obviously protective of the woman.

Ian finishes his drink, eying the man thoughtfully. It's nice to see the Scotsman distracted by work. He's almost his old self as he frowns contemplatively, trying to figure out the rest of the puzzle. Meanwhile Mrs. Turning and Tabitha enter the dining cart, the former led by her granddaughter as she is shaky and unsteady on her feet. They seat themselves at the infamous table of all places, at the old woman's insistence, and Tabitha looks uncomfortable as she sits down stiffly. Likely Arkwright has spoken to her too...

For a long stretch the pair sit pleasantly enough, Tabitha helping her grandmother figure out the menu, but suddenly the old woman stiffens and with a look of alarm clutches at her throat, mouth open as if gasping for air but unable to breathe. Her eyes widen and she starts slapping her gloved hand on the table, the other still at her neck as poor Tabitha wails for help.

Chapter 9: Northward

Penny sipped her wine, musing. Jaffers's protectiveness of the memory of the deceased bride was surprising; respectfulness notwithstanding, he couldn't have been more than her bartender for a few days some years ago. Unless he'd been something more?

She glanced over her shoulder at the new arrival, perturbed to see Tabitha and Mrs Turning take the table that had garnered so much unwarranted attention. She'd been planning to take it herself with Ian for dinner (or for dinner with Ian, as it were) and see what all the fuss was about.

Turning around, she swirled her wine and began to ask 'So, what is all this ruckus—?' when she heard Mrs Turning begin to choke and splutter. 'My god!' Penny slipped off the stool and hurried over, swiftly diagnosing the issue. Mrs Turning hadn't eaten anything yet; she couldn't be choking on food. But something was choking her.

'Bring salt!' she ordered Ian and Jaffers as she arrived at the table. Penny snapped open her purse, quickly consulting her EMF meter for signs of ghostly activity (no time for discretion now). 'Has she eaten or done anything?' she asked Tabitha urgently, before she turned her attention to trying to help the old woman, somehow.

OOC: Penny tries to determine if it really is a ghost, whether it's possessing or just choking Mrs Turner, and how she can stop it.

Chapter 9: Northward

Poor Tabitha shakes her head, crying and wringing her hands. The EMF meter is going crazy.

Around you the rest of the dining car is pandemonium. Women gasping, men gaping and poor Jaffers turning incredibly stricken. Ian grabs the salt from the stunned man, pours a generous handful and with an uncertain, Uhhh.....? he flings the salt at the elderly woman. She stiffens in her chair, old bones creaking as her back jerks straight and for the briefest moment you swear her face is not her own but that of a young woman's, though the moment is fleeting and in the next instant she half collapses, breathing raggedly and gasping for air. Tabitha wails and sobs and Ian comforts her, exchanging a grim look with you.

I want to go back. T-take me b-back! Mrs. Turning pants.

Chapter 9: Northward

Amidst all that fear and urgency, Penny was glad of Ian's swift understanding of the salt – she hadn't yet been sure how to administer it, but his throwing a handful to the face had done the job admirably. And in an instant, Penny glimpsed the face of death, the ghost of the deceased bride reliving her final moments through others.

Then it had passed. Penny moved to Mrs Turning's side, massaging her back to ease her pain and help her breathe. She hoped the poor old woman would be well. Recalled she was possibly psychic or a medium, she wondered if she might have gained some knowledge from the spirit, but it was hardly the time to ask. Penny nodded in discreet understanding to Ian, but declared 'A psychosomatic reaction, I think.' knowing most people here wouldn't know what it meant, making it more likely to be accepted. 'A good glass of water and some rest is what you need.' Penny offered an arm to help Mrs Turning rise and walk back to her cabin; Tabitha seemed in no state to escort her.

Chapter 9: Northward

Ian looks almost as relieved as Tabitha and, behind the bar, Jaffers looks half ready to faint. Yes, he will need to be questioned later...

Mrs. Turning clutches at your arm, still breathing raggedly from the effects and Ian takes Tabitha too, putting a comforting arm around her shoulder. If she were a prettier woman perhaps you'd be jealous but the poor thing has a face like a hatchet and a rather unfortunate complexion. Still, she's one of the nicest young women you've ever met and you wish her and her grandmother well.

Speaking of the grandmother, the woman trembles and mumbles over and over as you head back to your car, She's angry, she's angry, she's angry, she's angry... Unfortunately it seems the woman is having one of her fits again though at least this time you can puzzle out who she's referring to.

She's b-been so much w-worse lately! Tabitha sobs. She keeps talking about the dead woman! I think she's become obsessed!

Fortunately, Penny was not the sort to be jealous, not least because to this point she'd had little to be jealous over. Nor would she doubt Ian's intentions at a time like this. Her attention was focused unerring on the case. 'It is a very sad story.' she tried to console Tabitha, then patted the grandmother's shoulder, seemingly humouring her as she asked. 'Who's angry, Mrs Turning? Why is she angry?'

She pointed ahead to the passage between carriages, whispering 'Ian, the door.'

Alice: You are roused from your nap by the sound of voices approaching the private car opposite yours. The Turnings. From the sounds of it Tabitha is blubbering something and should you slide open the pocket door you see Penny, Ian (his arm around Tabitha) and a very agitated looking Mrs. Turning. Emma stops knitting to lean over, intrigued.

Penny: Mrs. Turning Abigail of course! she snaps impatiently as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. One hand slips to her throat as though fearing she will choke again. She's jealous! She'll kill every woman on this train til she finds her!

Hearing this, Penny grew more concerned; this ghost wasn't merely a lost soul re-enacting its fate, it was an angry spirit targeting victims with desire to kill. 'Finds who? Who is she looking for? Why is she jealous?' she pressed Mrs Turning, dropping the pretence of humouring a mad old woman and now intently interrogating the medium.

Penny: At your questioning the old woman's eyes slowly clear. Blast! She looks at you all with sudden surprise, the epitome of a polite high society woman from days of yore. Oh dear me! I'm sorry, I seem to have had one of my fits again! I do hope I haven't disturbed anyone. Tabitha dear? What's wrong? Are you alright? She looks to Penny helplessly. Did I do something to upset her? Her face is so distraught that she would hurt her granddaughter that you find yourself pitying the poor woman, living half in the world as she does. Still, it is frustrating to be so close to an answer and not get it.

Penny bit back a curse, finding it painfully ironic that the old woman was psychically more lucid when in the grip of senile dementia than when she was clear-headed. She supposed it might be possible to confuse and stress her again, and thereby trigger the psychic state, but she couldn't be that cruel. 'No, Mrs Turning,' Penny began, speaking gently, patting her shoulder. 'You were choking at dinner. We helped you recover, then brought you back here to rest... Is there anything you need? We can have dinner brought here for you.'

That's very kind my dear, thank you, but I'm not very hungry for some reason. Poor Tabitha could use some tea though I think. She leans in and whispers, Perhaps with a bit of libation smuggled in? She winks. It's amazing how different she is when her mind is with her. You have a feeling she has quite an interesting history.

When you're finished with the pair Ian leans in once you're out of earshot. That was close. Too close. We've got to move quickly before someone actually gets killed. 'And a glass of fresh water for you, Mrs. Turning, it will make you feel better.' Penny promised, then added with a whisper, a wink, and a smile 'And I'll see what I can do.' She made sure they were comfortable and asked if they needed anything else, before leaving them to their privacy.

She vacated the cabin and heard Ian's words. 'Imagine if we were...' she mused, coming to an idea. 'Let's have dinner. I propose we take that table, and that I sit in the chair Mrs Turning was in – it will save someone else from taking the cursed table tonight, it will let us investigate the booth with little suspicion, and even if the ghost Abigal attacks again, I may learn what who it is she is after. You can be ready to throw rock salt in my mouth, as before.' She'd known Ian would object, and volunteer himself in her place, so she'd not given him a chance. They were getting to know each other rather well in some respects.

After speaking with Ian, she looked in on the other cabin, and quickly filled Alice and Emma in on the situation with the ghost and the attack on Mrs Turning and what they'd learned.

Just throw the salt at it, or pour a line across any entrance to form a barrier to keep it out, if you must. I have a jar of salt in the side pouch of my hunting kit, in the compartment.' Penny: By the time you get back to the dining car with Ian, most of the commotion has stopped though people eye you both curiously. You were the two who managed the incident after all. Jaffers is nowhere to be seen, replaced by a dull looking man in his sixties who looks quite irritated to be there. The table in question is open of course though should you sit in it a plump young well to do woman gasps and asks, Are you sure that's wise?! That's the seat that woman died in you know! The whole train is talking about it. Meanwhile her husband, who seems to be made of sterner stuff, rolls his eyes. Calm down Martha. OOC: Okay.

Penny noted Jaffers's absence, and was curious as to why he'd suddenly departed. His replacement's irritation suggested this was inconvenient and unscheduled. An old woman having a choking fit was surely not so disturbing to a man like Jaffers, especially one so dismissive of ghost stories. A personal connection to this Abigail, then, as had been suggested and apparent in his manner. How close had they been? Did he know something of this haunting? An avenue of investigation to return to later.

She slipped into the fateful seat, hearing the words of alarm. She wished could be the sort of enlightened person who could say confidently there was no such as ghosts, or demons, vampires, or werewolves. Sometimes, she wished she could tell the truth, about what she did and the nature of the world, to warn people about the things that preyed on them. But it would cause chaos and panic, and force the monsters to become really dangerous... 'This is a busy train. I am certain hundreds of people have sat here without coming to undue harm. They surely can't all choke, it would be a scandal for the railway company. It was but a coincidence, and for one of Mrs Turning's condition, a not unlikely one.'

Placing her purse in her lap, she peeked inside at Professor Hertz's EMF meter, sliding and angling it to better scan of ghost activity, expecting a residue now.

Meanwhile your EMF is going quite animated. Not enough for the ghost to still be present, but definitely reacting. Ian signals for two menus as you do your work. We might as well eat while we're here he shrugs. If you start choking I'll drench you in salt my dear he smiles. As you look around you see little of interest about the table. No tell, tale signs of something awry. Nothing suspicious, nothing sinister. Just a simple table with grains of salt here and there from the misadventure before. The only indicator of something wrong is the emf and the fact that you feel a bit on the chilly side. Should you order something, it comes without incident. Ian orders Salisbury steak and creamed potatoes along with a scotch. Well, we're not going to get far this way I suppose. I'm thinkin Jaffers is the way to go. Chapter 9: Northward

Penny rolled her eyes at the man's words to his wife; in downplaying her fears over ghosts, she perforce had given ammunition to him. As the couple left, she pointed to Ian, saying 'And this young man has enough sense not to belittle his wife.' She gave him a mischievous smile for their pretence at husband and wife.

'Please do.' she agreed on the matter of salt. 'But do draw the line at belting me with iron.' She wondered how the ghost had attacked Mrs Turning; spectral hands around the throat to murder, or possession and reliving the death throes? She supposed she would find out soon enough...

She ordered a traditional American dish: maccherone pasta with Parmesan cheese and Virginia ham in a cream sauce. She figured something soft would be safer to swallow should the ghost decide to strangle her. She ordered a Riesling white wine to accompany it. So, this was it: a date, with the possibility of ghost attack to add a frisson of excitement. The ghost would be easier to handle. 'Indeed, I was rather expecting to be attacked by now, but perhaps our ghost has spent itself tonight.' she considered, stirring the elbow pasta with her fork. 'Perhaps if I'd ordered oysters, but I simply cannot stand them. But I agree, Jaffers certainly knows more than he let on. Still, our bird has flown the coop for now, and I daresay I won't get any more of use from Mrs Arkwright.'

'However, they are not our only persons of interest. Remember Jaffers pointed out those two young men, and their particular interest in this table?'
Penny had wondered if they were hunters – two brothers travelling together were certainly the type – but they would have acted as soon as Mrs Turning was assaulted. So, what was behind their interest? She'd passed them often enough to take in the details of their appearance and mannerisms, and had taken a seat with a decent view. Surely she could deduce some facts about them...

'Indeed. Unless they're very new at this, they are much too jumpy to be hunters.' Penny agreed softly. She didn't look around to the two men, having already viewed them and using subtler means of observation. She explained to Ian, 'Judging by their similar bone structure, mannerisms, and close relationship, I surmise they are most likely brothers. The coal dust staining their attire shows they work with coal; given where we are, I'd wager as shovellers for the locomotive's boiler. They've made an effort to scrub up in order to visit the dining car, so they've come here for a reason, and their curious interest in this table shows it to be more than just for a good meal and drink. I conclude they work on the train and know of the ghost story, and have more reason than most to believe it.'

She enjoyed a mouthful of pasta and a sip of Reisling, while she contemplated their next step. 'If we were to both confront them, it would look unusual, even suspicious. But a gentlemen concerned two rough men are paying undue attention to his wife...?' she proposed with a knowing smile, trusting Ian to handle the next part.

Ian listens with the slightest of glances in the brothers' direction. At your last words he gives a wicked grin, finishes his drink, and then stands up, his face instantly darkening, though you know it's just for show. He then strides across the car and sits down next to one of the brothers, who look startled at his sudden action. He speaks low, but not so low you can't hear him.

Hey. You wanna tell me why you keep ogling my wife? I see you lookin over at her. You're right to appreciate her, but what kind of husband would I be if I didn't thump your faces in for it? He starts to roll up his sleeves. You wanna take this somewhere or should I school you right here in front of everyone?

The brothers look petrified, both gaping and babbling in a panic, saying, no of course they weren't ogling his wife, and they wouldn't dream of upsetting so fine a man, and other such placating talk. You can see a hint of a twinkle in Ian's eyes but he keeps his face intimidating. Then what were you doin? We're trying to eat in peace, not be stared at by two slack jawed idiots. And don't lie to me. I'll know and I'll smack your faces in for your trouble.
No sir! We wouldn't lie! We were just wondering about the ghost! Surely you've heard of it? It's been keeping us up at night! stammers one brother. Ian arches a brow and turns to you with a gesture to join them. Well darlin, they claim they're starin on account of the ghost everyone is tellin tales on. You believe em or shall I knock their teeth in for ya? In spite of herself and her fierce suffragist independence, she couldn't help but smile at Ian's show of protection, like a knight defending a lady's honour. It wasn't necessarily a bad thing. She was also glad to see Ian so happy and carefree again, like his former self.

Playing her part, she stared suspiciously at the two brothers for a long moment, saying 'What happened to Mrs Turning should be considered a simple accident.' Then she decided to let them off the hook. 'But I do love a ghost story. Let's hear if this one is any good first.' she said, rising and coming over.

'But we're not done with you two yet...' Penny tried not to let her disappointment show on her face; the brothers might take it as a sign that Ian would decide to hit them. Apart from a report of a visible manifestation to add to the case file, she didn't know any more than she'd learned from Mrs Turning's experience. Well, she could corroborate it, at least: the ghost was indeed the angry, jealous Abigail that Mrs Turning had spoken so feverishly of.

Ah, but she was approaching this as a hunter. As a detective, however, she had not one, but two eyewitnesses who could provide her with a useful description. 'Please, describe her for me, leave nothing out.' As she heard their descriptions, first one, then the other, she asked incisive questions to draw out more information and double-check the facts, while being careful not to suggest clues that would slip memories in their heads, nor lurid details of ectoplasm or the like.

From what they describe, you gather she was a beautiful dark haired young woman of about twenty years of age, dressed in a pale blue lace blouse with a navy blue skirt and her hair loosely pinned up. She had very prim and proper mannerisms, good posture, that sort of thing, from what they can recall, but then that's hardly a surprise. They do mention in passing that when they came upon her she looked disappointed, as though she were expecting someone else, right before she became angry. The oddest thing one brother shakes his head.

Alice: You decide to stick around the sleeping car for the moment, since the Turnings had such a scare and as you wait for what seems an eternity, it appears they are done being accosted for the moment. 'Was she indeed?' Penny said in interest. She turned over the facts of the case. It was now clear Abigail was expecting to meet someone important. She'd been travelling to her wedding, according to Mrs Arkwright, so the most likely candidate was her husband-to-be. But then, she was... what? Stood up, most likely jilted. She was apparently in a jealous rage, so most likely she'd been jilted for another woman. An all-too-common and tragic story. Then she'd choked on her food and died, a rather banal end, not how the story ended.

'And you said you've seen her on other occasions?'

Penny: The brothers nod vigorously. Yes! I've seen her in my dreams sometimes, and once, after a particular nightmare, I jerked awake only to find her leaning over me! I've never been so terrified! he shakes at the memory. And I'm not the only one! Others have seen her too! Mostly men for some reason, but they've seen her alright.

Alice: You hear a faint, strangled gasp coming from Professor Delapore's car. Under other circumstances it would be easily ignored, but considering the temperature...

Should you go to investigate you can slide open his door in time to see him pinned against the wall, shaking in fear as a beautiful young woman, impossibly pale and ghastly looking, clutches him by the throat, squeezing hard.

Chapter 9: Northward

It was perhaps not so unusual for a man to dream of a young woman, it seemed, but Penny wagered this was rather more significant. Abigail was no doubt seeking the husband who had abandoned her as well. It was unusual, though not unheard of, for a ghost to attack through a dream, however. 'Oh? And what happened in these dreams, if I may ask? Did she say anything?'

Alice: She whips her head around at your words and screeches at you, gnashing her teeth, cloudy eyes wild. She's clearly not alive, and you realize this is the ghost that's been causing such a bother. Truth be told she's quite scary, though considering some of the other things you've faced you're able to steel yourself. The professor, meanwhile, looks ready to pass out, his face purpling for lack of air. She drops him and rushes at you...ooc: roll your attack.

Penny: She was in my bed with me of all things! In the dream I mean. She was holding me from behind, clutching so tight it was hard to breathe. She kept saying she was never going to let me go. he looks upset at the memory and his brother nods, indicating he too had the same experience. Most of the men have had dreams like this, but other times she's furious! Sometimes she'll strangle you in your dreams and when you wake up you feel like it was real! One fellow even had fingermarks!

'Oh my word!' Penny exclaimed in scandalised shock, remembering her role as a middle-class paranormal enthusiast rather that a hardened detective. It certainly seemed as if this Abigail was the jealous and vengeful type, in death and perhaps even in life. She got down to the most important part – finding out how to stop her. 'And the woman who died all those years ago – do you know if anything of hers was left behind on the train? An heirloom, her luggage, her ashes even? Is there a place on the train she's always sighted?'

Alice had no idea if her gun would even work on a ghost, but she knew if she missed it would work on the professor. She decided on the better part of valor, tumbling backwards into the hall and then shouting, "Emma, you dumb witch, get off your backside and help me!" Then she took off at a run towards Penny and the help she could provide.

She's mostly seen not far from the dining car where she died, but she's been spotted all over. As for anything belonging to her, you've got me he shrugs helplessly. I don't know much about her but...hm...I do remember a locket! I don't know if it's still here or not, but every time we've seen her she's wearing it. I remember it dangling over me while she was leaning over my bed one night. A small, gold little thing.

Just then Alice bursts into the dining car, clearly having arrived at a run. The few patrons still dining look over in surprise at the interruption, curious and judging as only the wealthy can be.

She stopped dead as everyone was looking at her. Her eyes darted around the room, in panic, looking for...

When she made eye contact with Penny she didn't even need to say anything. It was chasing her, she was frightened, and she had come this way seeking help. She was rooted to the spot, unable to move, and whatever ability to speak had been robbed by the sudden attention.

She turned and looked behind her, almost hoping to see the ghost following so she wouldn't seem like a mad woman.

Chapter 9: Northward

A locket? Hmm, yes, it usually was a locket: a valuable piece jewellery, often worn close to the heart, emblematic of a family connection and all the emotion that went with it, everything that could tie a ghost to the mortal world. And easily lost on a train, perhaps...

However, Penny was interrupted in her musings by Alice's explosive arrival. Penny rose from her seat in readiness, quickly discerning the reasons for her haste and shock. 'Well, thank you for a such a marvellous ghost story, gentleman. Ian shan't need to hit you after all. Please excuse us, it seems something's come up, maybe with Mrs Turning...' she said hurriedly to the brothers, departing the table and joining Alice.

'What happened? Did you try iron, salt?' she asked urgently in a low voice, walking past Alice back to the sleeping car.

As you both head back towards the sleeping car, you find the professor seated in his room, still looking completely shaken. Emma sits next to him, impatient but trying to comfort him at the same time. Are you sure you didn't do anything? I find it odd a dead woman would be so hell bent on strangling you. Oh calm down, she probably won't be back for a while. You can tell she's genuinely trying to help but she's obviously not well practiced at it for her last words startle him nearly to the point of sobbing. She looks at you both with relief. Penny rolled her eyes, but approached the shaken man, speaking with a measured, firm tone. 'Professor Delapore? I'm a detective, Penelope Dreadful. Please tell me everything that happened here, from the beginning. Leave out no detail, however small.' Not only would it give her an immediate, first-hand account of the ghost's attack, but it would also perhas allow the man to come out of his shock and begin to make sense of his experience. Perhaps he would rationalise it away, not a ghost but a murderous living woman, pursued by a detective? Penny asked numerous probing questions, to straighten out the story, while also closely scrutinising the cabin for clues. It was now a fresh crime-scene, the air still cold.

Chapter 9: Northward

Thinking over the case and the ghost's modus operandi, Penny concluded that the Abigail was targeting men in general (well, not unreasonably, thought the suffragist), not merely philanderers, adulterers, and heart-breakers. Otherwise, she would target Ian, at least as he had been formerly, rather than the fearful Professor Delapore. Penny also had to discount the attack on poor Mrs Turning; the psychic had merely relived the choking, not been deliberately targeted.

Penny examined Delapore's neck, noting the bruises left by the fingers, surely female. If Abigail had merely died of choking on her food, why was she so set upon strangulation? Unless, perhaps, it was not the food that had choked her... She needed to speak to Jaffers again.

'No, you are not crazy, Professor Delapore,' she reminded him of his title and academic achievement, not the mark of a madman. 'What you had was a very frightening experience. But rest assured that we will catch the woman responsible and see that justice is done.' she said carefully, not quite lying, avoiding the word "ghost". Perhaps he would rationalise it away, perhaps he would come to accept the supernatural, but Penny thought it best that it be on his own terms. She wasn't here to shatter anyone's understanding of reality.

At least until Mrs Turning's niece arrived. 'Yes, I think so...' Penny answered, stepping out of the cabin to meet her, then realised this must mean the old woman was psychically active again, if not lucid. She quickly began walking toward the Turnings' cabin, bringing the niece with her. 'What else is she saying?'

You head to the woman's car, already hearing Mrs. Turning yourself at this point. She is staring off into the distance and saying over and over again, She'll come for him last. She'll come for him last. She'll come for him last. She'll come for him last. It's really quite disturbing and her poor niece gives the woman a shake, trying to get her to stop. The old woman blinks, as if finally noticing you all. She gives a smile at Ian of all people and with a tone as sure as discussing the weather says, You're in for it too deary. Ian blinks in surprise, but doesn't look too concerned. No doubt he's an old hand at ghosts but even so, it is chilling how matter of fact she sounds. She picks up her needlepoint then. How nice to see you all again. I hope the journey is treating everyone well?

'Who? Who will she come for?' Penny had pressed, but it was too late, Mrs Turning had come back to herself. But not before imparting one final cryptic warning, perhaps in answer to her question, and it chilled Penny to the bone. Of course, she should expect this, Ian was a perfect target for the ghost, and he was a hunter accustomed to ghosts, she rationalised, but it worried her nonetheless.

'Oh, yes, it's lovely, thank you, Mrs Turning.' Penny answered. She tried a different tack, inquiring 'Tell me, Mrs Turning, have you met a young woman named Abigail on this train? I was looking for her.' Perhaps something might linger in the old medium's memories, however confused.

The locket again! It had to still be on the train, for Abigail's bones surely would not be. But where? Penny reasoned her way through the issue. Hidden in some crevice, perhaps, undiscovered for years? Possible, but unlikely, and too difficult to prove if so. She must necessarily discount it. In the possession of someone still on the train? Someone who'd been close to Abigail in life as she was not displeased. Yes! The association with the dining car corroborated it. Once again, Penny was brought back to Mr Jaffers.

'Well, thank you very much, Mrs Turning. We'll let you have some peace and quiet. You have a good rest now, please.' she consoled, patting the old woman's hand.

If Alice and Ian had nothing to add, then Penny slipped out of the cabin for some discretion. 'I believe that clinches it. Abigail is haunting her locket... Ghosts are bound in death to either their bones or a treasured possession.' she explained for Alice's benefit. 'And I believe Jaffers has her locket. We must question him, get a hold of the locket, and salt and burn it. This will purify it, break the binding, and release her troubled spirit to Heaven.'

Ian nods at Penny's instructions. How blunt do you want to be about this? I could always shove him in a corner and make him tell us. Or do you want to go about this the proper way? he gives an amused grin.

But if he is honouring the memory of the deceased, we must give him the chance to do the honourable thing and aid us.'

Moving swiftly along the train and through the dining car, Penny deftly questioned staff and guests alike on Jaffers's whereabouts. She used a trifling story of a lost cuff-link she thought might belong to him (Penny had already observed it, of course) so as not to arouse much suspicion as to why they sought him.

With at least two attacks in the last hour or so, Penny simply could not wait another hour and risk a life lost. They had to see Jaffers immediately. But how? The carriages made an almost one-dimensional course, and climbing onto the roof and riding atop a speeding train seemed frightfully gauche. Pushing their way through would only add obstacles to the investigation, potentially get them kicked off later. She need a ruse...

OOC: Questions, questions... At which end of the train are the servant's cars? Would we go through them to reach the engine? Are the two brothers still around?

Chapter 9: Northward

Penny was of course reluctant to get any more civilians involved in this case than she strictly needed to, so she discounted pressing the two coal-men into service. Besides, she would have much the same debate with them as any of the staff about gaining entry to the staff cars. They might even be rather less willing to show her the sites of various hauntings in there, if it risked inviting the ridicule of their colleagues. The story of the cufflink was a poor choice. No, she needed to try a different tack, one with an equally urgent need. Hmm...

She thanked the relief barman and, nudging Ian, continued down the dining car and on, until they came to the door to the staff cars. There, she lingered close to Ian, briefly intimating what she dared share of her plan, until she could flag one of the servants, a man for preference. 'Ah, excuse me, can you help us? My husband and I were wondering if it is possible for us to visit the steam engine? Just for a little tour, of course.' An innocuous enough request, but Penny would add a little oomph to it. 'I am quite a fancier of steam engines and locomotives, you see. We even met at an industrial show, and simply had to take a train journey for our honeymoon.' She took Ian's hand meaningfully. Penny had recalled Alice's lessons of earlier, and time spent with the ladies of Whitechapel, and thought that their techniques, if applied appropriately, could be useful here. She went on, speaking more breathily 'It's all so thrilling, isn't it, dear? Riding upon the iron horse, those big pistons sliding and pounding, all that steam making one so hot and flustered...' With her other hand, she touched her chest then tugged at her collar and slipped loose a button, as if eager to get out of her dress. She even licked her lips. With her anxiety at doing this, she didn't have to feign a rosy-cheeked blush and short breaths, seeming much like a newlywed bride wishing to get in the mood with a hot steam engine.

She squeezed Ian's hand, suggested he take the lead. Surely one man could help another out, perhaps for a bribe...?

Ian, after you give him more details of the ruse, looks incredibly amused but he slips into the role naturally as the servant looks quite surprised at such a fine lady's words. Ian laughs and pats the man on the back with his free hand. Isn't she darlin? You oughta find yourself a society girl too my friend. They seem all straight laced and proper, but they like nothin more than to roll around in some grease with a working man with calloused hands. Consider it a tip from me to you he winks and laughs again. His usual Scottish accent thickens, no doubt to relate to the lower class all the more. The servant breaks into a big grin of his own and points the way. I'd hate to have a passenger disappointed! Just head that way. You'll have to pass through the worker's quarters, but just tell em Bill sent you to "the spot" and they'll show you where to go. A nice cozy place near where they keep the coal. You'll get a little messy though, be warned he laughs all the louder.

It doesn't take long to reach the cars he mentioned and Ian whispers as you hurry along, Didn't expect a plan like that to come from the likes of you. It's been eight years in my mind since I've seen you but I remember you being pretty...proper.

ooc: It won't take long to find Jaffers and you will recognize him. Go ahead and finish up with Ian and proceed upon finding the man.

Alice:
He blushes as you touch his shirt, but his face stays determined not to react. Oh it is fun to bother him! In the meantime you get the answer from one of the servants that he should be back at his post in the dining car within the hour. Before you can decide what to do though you, Mrs. Turning's niece comes rushing to you both, obviously having searched high and low. Please! It's grandmother! She's having a fit! Help! Should you follow you will find the old woman on the floor, eyes wide open and muscles stiff as she jerks this way and that. She's killed him! She's killed him! Penny flushed furiously as she hurried away from the exchange, seemingly eager to get to "the spot", but in fact just trying to get away. She was hotly embarrassed and annoyed the conversation had turned so much more explicit than her planned insinuation. Still, she couldn't, or at least shouldn't, blame Ian for running with what had been her idea. 'I am proper. I just didn't expect it to become quite so improper. Nor there to be a spot.' she grumbled ruefully.

She debated whether to be defensive or pompous about this, and decided on the latter. Dignity was not what you did, but how you did it. 'And I'll have you know I worked often with the ladies of the night of Whitechapel to hunt the Ripper and less-human predators. I did learn some things from them... More recently, that Alice has been... giving me some instruction.' In other words, putting ideas in her head. Looking about, she scanned the servant's quarters, looking for where Jaffers might stay, while murmuring 'Not that I don't have some fancies of my own.'

Ian laughs and shakes his head. Sorry, sorry, I probably went too far with it. But I'm sure you know more than I give you credit for. And sorry if I tease too much, it's just nice to have a distraction his smile fades. Be careful of Alice though. She might give you more instruction than you'd like. Besides, there's not a bloody thing wrong with being proper. His smile returns ever so faintly.

Alice: Mrs Turning barely seems to hear you but she manages to gasp, In the cargo car! She strangled him!

You are aware the cargo car is at the end of the train. Should you try to make your way there you will hear screams from some of the servants as they rush forward, fleeing from something. If you continue to investigate you'll find quite a scene. Three workmen gathered around a fourth who lies on the ground, eyes wide open.

'Nor in being improper occasionally...' Penny added with a slight mischievous smile. She returned a more appreciative look to Ian, glad to have a friend she could trust to back her up in such schemes. 'But the ruse worked perfectly, that's all that matters. Thank you. Now, let us find Mister Jaffers. And who knows, we may even find ourselves the Spot.' she added with her own teasing air.

She soon located Jaffers's room and rapped on the door, not calling out so as not to give him prior warning.

Ian looks startled at your last statement, but recovers quickly, especially since you already have started knocking. Jaffers opens the door quickly, looking haggard and tired but fully dressed save his shoes but then he is due to resume his shift soon. You do smell the air of alcohol about him, but he doesn't seem drunk yet, though his red eyes could be from whiskey but you get the feeling it's possible he's been crying. Ian sees this and you can tell he finds it awkward, waiting for you to take the lead. Jaffers squints at you both, turning irritated. I think you must be lost. This is the servant's quarters. You want the opposite end of the train he points.

Alice: Delapore scrambles off to obey, though he looks pale as a sheet and very unsteady on his feet. Meanwhile your search for a pulse proves fruitless. Upon closer inspection of the body you see fingermarks on his neck where he was strangled. His body is still warm enough you think this must have been recent indeed. In fact, the air is slightly cold. Around you the workmen are swearing and shouting, only semi aware of your presence. You hear one stammer, She'll kill us all! None of us is safe!

'No, I want Abigail's locket.' Penny returned quickly and firmly, throwing Jaffers off balance. Whiskey and grief could make the man unstable, so Penny softened her approach, but targeted the source of that grief. 'Mr Shaw and I are private investigators with the Pinkerton National Detective Agency.' Well, Ian had once been a Pinkerton, it was close enough. Penny was sure dropping the name would cover for many questions Jaffers might have and give them some legal authority. 'We're investigating the death of Miss Abigail Peyton and have reason to believe you know something of it. Please, Mister Jaffers, it would be very helpful if you tell us what you know. It would help lay her spirit to rest.' That part was very literally true.

The man looks completely shocked at your abruptness and actually staggers back a bit. At mention of the locket he stiffens, looking quite unhappy though hearing your credentials softens him up a bit.

I don't think the Pinkertons can do anything about Abigail he shakes his head bitterly. She's dead and there's nothing to be done of it. I suppose you've heard all the whispers around the train have you? At first I thought I was going crazy, seeing her out of the corner of my eye, dreaming about her at night. But others have...seen things. Maybe we're all going mad together? he laughs but there is no mirth in it. Look, if you think there was foul play in her death, you're wrong. She choked to death. A witness to the death who swore it was accidental put a great dent in Penny's theory of foul play. A ghost did not necessarily spawn from violent or unnatural death, she knew, but due to unresolved matters or desire for revenge. Sudden choking could as easily interrupt Abigail's plans as murder. 'I don't think we're going mad, Mister Jaffers. But it would be best, for her memory and our consciences, if we tell Abigail's story. How was her trip on the train? What were her final hours like?'

You sense he is telling the truth as he sits down on his small bed and proceeds to explain with no small amount of bitterness. They were happy hours, until the end. Perhaps the only happiness the poor woman had. You see, Abigail was on her way to get married to a man she did not love. Her mother had arranged the whole thing, and though she dreaded the arrangement, she felt it was her duty to obey. That was until she met...me. He looks up gravely and you start to realize just what his relationship was with the woman. She was traveling alone and ended up in the dining car quite often. The woman liked her wine and I admit, she caught my eye. Eventually things progressed as they do between a man and a woman and though I'd only known her a few days, I was determined to save her from her fate. Do, do you believe two people who barely know each other can fall in love? Because I do.

Penny's eyes flicked curiously to Ian, as if to check his reaction. 'Yes, I believe it is possible.' she murmured sympathetically. While Jaffers sounded honest enough, his tale did not quite fit with the elements Mrs Turning had mentioned: Abigail's jealousy of other women, an unfaithful lover. Surely there was more to this. But for now, she caught on what Jaffers had said about saving her from her fate. 'But what did you try to do?'

Meanwhile Jaffers continues. We were going to run away together! I had a little savings. Nothing like she needed to live the life she was used to of course, but she said she would have followed me to the ends of the earth barefoot if she had to he smiles wistfully at the memory. With a glance to her side, Penny had sensed Ian's tension and uncharacteristic silence, and wondered if he found this story too personal, given his recent separation from the hallucinatory Coira? She would ask him about it later, if he was open to talking about it.

As to Jaffers's story, the love affair seemed remarkably swift, to plan to elope after but a few days together on the train and little knowledge of the other. But such impulsive things were known to happen in both the carefully arranged courtships of England and in the first flush of love. And to die so abruptly before such dreams were realised, a whole lifetime cut short, a great potential cancelled – yes, that could well leave a soul frustrated and restless. But it still did not seem to explain Abigail's jealous attacks. 'And was there another woman for you, before or since? Was there a man Abigail disliked, perhaps her fiancé?' A third possibility arose. 'And how was her relationship with her mother?'

'No, you have not gone crazy, Mister Jaffers. It is all quite real.' Penny informed him gently, trying not to push the disturbing revelation of the existence of ghosts, nor to sound crazy herself.

She recalled what Mrs Turning had said about Abigail not stopping killing "until she finds her". "Her" must therefore be Jaffers's new beloved. That seemed to complete the matter. The frustrated ghost of Abigail was jealous and sought to kill Jaffers's beloved but, until she found her, she vented her rage on others she thought to be unfaithful, all except Jaffers himself. That woman would be in special danger until Abigail was stopped. Chillingly aware that the ghost could well be listening unseen right now, Penny asked 'Without saying her name, is your new love on this train currently? If she is, I beg you to avoid all contact with her.'

'Finally, do you have some keepsake of Abigail's, something precious to her, or to you? Perhaps a locket?'

So, that was the trigger for Abigail becoming a vengeful spirit. The pieces all fell into place. 'Hopefully, it will not be for long.' Penny assured Jaffers, hoping her measures would protect the other woman and not put her at risk. But it would be far too hard to keep her locked in a cabin with a line of salt at door and window and vent, with the train bumping so.

She quickly confirmed with Jaffers the location of his belongings, and ended with 'Thank you, Misters Jaffers. I hope we shall be about to lay Abigail's spirit to rest and help her pass to Heaven.'

As you near you find quite a rush of people around the baggage car, a body on the floor and Emma and Alice at the scene too. Unfortunately one of the higher ups has taken it upon himself to try to remove everyone from the situation. Personnel only! Everyone out! Unless you want to be put off at the next stop, I suggest you listen! he barks, not in the mood to negotiate. He looks furious, frustrated and quite stressed about the chaos around him. The lead in the situation looks like he wants to argue, but at last admits defeat and allows you to remain. I'll allow you to help, but the railroad would be remiss if we didn't have at least one staff member involved the entire affair! We cannot have our name dragged through the mud if you get the details wrong. I suggest myself he straightens proudly. 'Of course, we shall be completely discreet.' Penny assured the man, approaching the body. She already knew what she expected to find, but for the sake of thoroughness and appearances, she made a close examination of the corpse. There were clear signs of strangulation, and by ghostly hands, which did not leave fingermarks around the neck, but nevertheless crushed windpipe and larynx, leaving only the look of terror and suffocation in the face. Abigail was accelerating in her attacks, and Penny had no way to draw her out and trap her. Their only hope was to get to the locket, and salt and burn it.

As you examine the corpse, you do indeed find it fits with what you'd expect. Penny glances about the area and sees quite a bit of baggage already, spilling out into this particular car. Another car, attached, holds the bulk of the cargo. Jaffers gave you exact instructions of where his trunk was and what it looks like. It should be in the other car, at the end of the aisle and packed in a large overhead cupboard. Getting to it with the nosy staffer, Mr. Goldman is is name, could be interesting as he's not likely to want you snooping around.

Meanwhile Goldman has cleared out the rest of the onlookers so that you can investigate the scene better. Ian does his best to seem like he's doing the same and muttering to you as he does, so he seems more official. Likely Goldman would take him more seriously than a woman. Ian gives an apologetic wince as he does.

You don't have much time to investigate before a sudden cold sweeps the room. The lights flicker and blaze in turn. Abigail is coming.

They were so close to the locket and expelling Abigail, but the officious Mr Goldman was in the way and now the ghost herself was about to manifest again. Abigail seemed intent on doing anything she could to keep them from her anchor. Or was she merely mindlessly attacking another target of her jealous rage? Regardless, they had to move to the next carriage expeditiously and get rid of Goldman. The story told itself.

'This man was clearly suffocated. But there are no obvious causes.' Penny told Goldman, carefully not lying but giving him the story he needed to hear. 'Perhaps exposure to some gas or powder – oh, can you feel that chill? It must be the gas! Quickly, man, open all the windows, we'll search for the source. He came from the end carriage.' Chapter 9: Northward

Penny had decided against laying a line of salt behind her, reasoning it would soon be disturbed by either the battle, falling luggage, or the rocking of the train, and that she'd not have the time anyway. She was beginning to regret that decision now, as the ghost of Abigail manifested behind her. 'She's in here!' Penny shouted, and quickly scrambled over the heap of suitcases, using it as a crude barricade. But the pile slid alarmingly under her, sending her stumbling and sprawling.

She shouted back accusingly 'Alice! How dare you try to court Ian! You knew the feelings I have for him!' Penny had reasoned it would draw Abigail's attention away from her and refocus it on Ian and Alice, giving her a chance to find the locket. But the ruse was unconvincing one, perhaps because it was too much of a lie, or too much of a truth. She only hoped the obsessive, jealous ghost wouldn't think to doubt her.

Meanwhile, Penny attacked the luggage again, finding fresh strength in her arms to yank out one likely trunk.

Chapter 9: Northward

Penny struggled bravely against the icy grip of death around her throat, cutting off breath and life alike. With one hand, she tried to clutch Abigail's wrist, to pull her off, but her fingers kept slipping through her insubstantial, ectoplasmic form. Meanwhile, her free hand fumbled blindly for the last suitcase, for something, anything, that could help her fend off the madly jealous ghost. 'No!' she gasped defiantly. But if Abigail would speak, perhaps she could yet reason with her. 'None of us can know how it ends. So it doesn't matter! Only the happiness we have in the present matters.' she shouted desperately into transparent eyes. 'You had your joy – more than many get in a whole lifetime. Let him remember you as you were. Take your joy and go, into the light, I beg you!'

Chapter 9: Northward

Penny's tactic surprisingly works for a moment. Her grip loosens and she looks at her with sad, wide eyes, her expression turning into despair. But he forgot me! He forgot me! she half sobs, fury and betrayal on her pained face. He promised! He promised me! She looks to be getting angry again, but she's distracted enough to release Penny's neck completely for the moment, giving Alice an opening if she chooses to use it...

ooc: Ok, go ahead and roll if you're going to attack. Penny, you have a round to open the trunk but you'll have to roll a good search to get the locket first try.

Chapter 9: Northward

'He has never forgotten you!' Penny shouted back. Seizing the opportunity won from Abigail's distraction, she scrambled over the suitcases, until at last she laid hands on Jaffers's own trunk. Her fingers worked feverishly to undo the latch and straps, and soon cracked it open. At this angle, she could hardly see into the trunk, and felt inside. Somehow, she just knew it would be close to hand...

Chapter 9: Northward

Alice's shot fortunately rings true and it grazes the ghost's shoulder. She hisses in pain and anger but it gives Penny the opportunity she needs to fling open the trunk. The locket is where you would expect it to be, in a small pocket on the inside of the lid. Abigail screeches, ready to rush at you but suddenly a voice from across the room stops her. She's right. I haven't forgotten you. It is Jaffers. Emma stands next to him, a look of satisfaction on her face. Something tells you she had a hand in fetching him. Abigail looks shocked to see him, a rush of emotions cross her pale face. Happiness, adoration, and a great, great sorrow.

You betrayed me! she accuses, a great deal of the anger gone from her voice. You said we'd be together forever! Jaffers looks guilt ridden as he shakes his head. I didn't mean to. I didn't know it would hurt you! I thought I'd never see you again. And now...Abigail why are you hurting people?

Because they deserve it. she answers as though it's the simplest thing in the world. Better to take them all out before they break another's heart as you have mine!

But they've done nothing my dear. I have. I never meant to hurt you but clearly I have. By all rights you should be going after me. Leave everyone else out of it. Jaffers says quietly.

Meanwhile Penny hears a voice in her head. It takes her a moment to realize it is Emma. I can ignite that thing if you get it closer to me. I don't know how long he can keep her still!

Chapter 9: Northward

Even Penny's attention was taken by the events going on behind her, playing out a tale of love and loss from beyond the grave. Her heart went out for these lovers separated by life and death, wishing she could find a way for them to be together. Perhaps they could have been, under happier circumstances. But then Jaffers made a dangerous proposal. 'No, Mister Jaffers!'

Hearing Emma's words and her suggestion, Penny hesitated briefly. Could Emma really do as she claimed? What could she do with a ghost's anchor? In the end, however, she had no time do anything else but trust her. Twisting around, Penny drew back her arm and hurled the locket down the carriage to Alice.

Chapter 9: Northward

The locket sails through the air to Alice, who is able to catch it easily. Unfortunately it also draws the attention of Abigail who snaps her head to the locket, pure anger blazing on her face. You're trying to trick me! she screeches at Jaffers, sending a huge trunk hurtling toward him. You speak nothing but lies! Ian manages to pull him out of the way in time as the trunk slams into the wall behind him. He looks shaken and dismayed but there is also determination in his eyes as he looks at his old lover.

Abigail, meanwhile, is obviously going after Alice next...

Emma desperately turns to her. Throw the locket Alice! I can ignite it, just hurry!! Her voice is desperate and stressed, but then the ghost has reached new heights of anger it seems.

Chapter 9: Northward

As soon as Emma has the locket she grasps it with triumph and mutters something over it. It begins to smoke and flame, already catching alight. With a look of complete rage and fear, Abigail screams, starting towards the witch. Then, realizing it's too late, she then turns to a shocked Jaffers. If I must go, I'll take you with me this time! I'll not lose you again!! Then, quicker than anyone would have thought possible, she reaches her arm into the stunned man's chest and her hand disappears inside him. When she withdraws it blood starts to drip from his mouth and he struggles for breath, eyes wide and face turning pale. A-Abigail... he gasps, falling to his knees. Then, a tired little smile crosses his lips. A-Alright. Alright my dear... She smiles back at him, looking strangely at peace, then closes her eyes and disappears in a final burst of flame, her ashes falling to the cabin floor.

Chapter 9: Northward

Penny leans over the dying man and he gives a faint, weak smile. She was...my fault. I....should have...done more. Unfortunately Penny's attempts to stabilize him don't work and seconds later he goes limp, eyes glazing over as he stares lifelessly at the ceiling. Ian moves towards Penny but surprisingly it is Emma who gets there first, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder. There's nothing you could have done dear. She says softly. He didn't want to fight her. Not really. I think the guilt was too much.

Or the love. Ian adds with a sober face. Even death doesn't sever the hold a person has on another. His expression is grave, jaw set and eyes distant.

Chapter 9: Northward

Penny opened her mouth to protest, but it was too late, for Jaffers had already expired. She reached over to close his eyes; she'd grown too used to death in this trade. 'But he had nothing to be guilty for.' she managed. It didn't make sense. Though she understood why one would live for love, she could not work out why he would die for it. Ian's words made more sense. She bowed her head, mourning the passing of a man they'd known only briefly and, for all their skills, had been unable to save. Could they have done more, or acted sooner? She would never know.

She rose to her feet, quickly and practically thinking of the story to tell the railway officials. She'd already established the beginnings of one, and repeated in a weary monotone. 'There was a gas leak. Professor Delapore packed a jar of some chemical. With rough handling of the luggage or the rocking of the train, the jar cracked and the chemical became a vapour. It killed the workman and poor Jaffers. We were able to throw it out the window, where it will dissipate harmlessly in the desert.' She glanced to Alice. 'Can you get the professor to agree to this?'

Alice shrugged and said, "I think so. As long as he isn't blamed for killing the poor fellow. I think so." She repeated herself, a sure sign that she isn't sure, or more probably knows what he will want in return.

Chapter 9: Northward

Emma gives a small nod at Penny's plan. As good a plan as any. I'd bet they'd buy it. Most people don't want to think too hard about anything. Even death. Let me know if you need help dear. I can be...convincing when I need to be. She smiles wickedly.

Meanwhile Ian looks tired, sheathing his knife. What a mess. You'd think a person could take a bloody train ride in peace these days. Oh well, at least no one else got hurt. Too bad though. About both of them. There's a tightness to his eyes that betrays he feels more strongly on the subject than he's letting on, but as usual the man is emitting a more cavalier attitude. He turns to Alice. Don't let the professor try to bully you into anything. He seems the shy type so you're probably fine, but I'd happily put him in place if he's being stubborn.

ooc: Ok, go ahead and let me know your plans the rest of the trip. I will need bluff checks from Penny for the authorities and Alice, let me know how you want to convince the professor. He is actually quite shy around women so luckily that isn't too big a problem, but he's pretty freaked out by everything so you'll probably want to at least roll a diplomacy check. Then I'll move things to a new chapter.

Chapter 9: Northward

With ease, thanks to her university education in chemistry, Penny listed a number of chemicals that could potentially serve as the culprit, and which Professor Delapore could well have purchased, for himself or a colleague. She went over the story with her companions, ensuring they would all give similar accounts, and correcting them on the finer points of the scientific side, should it be required. She doubted the officials outside would see a flaw in the story, but she didn't want the railway company getting curious down the line and mounting a full investigation.

However, she reserved her greatest concern for Ian, gazing at him with sympathetic eyes. She understood that Jaffers's relationship with Abigail would have reminded Ian of his own relationship with Coira – both men who had lost their sweethearts suddenly and tragically, left forever mourning and wondering at a life they'd never have together. Perhaps he would need to talk about it, surely, but it was difficult to broach such matters to a man of this age, especially one who tried to be as cavalier as Ian Shaw. Penny bit her lip; it was hard enough for her to talk about private matters.

Then she realised a more immediate risk, almost with relief. 'Ah! We must check on Mrs. Turning. The poor dear could well have channelled Abigail's fury during the fight. Hopefully she shall have a more peaceful journey now the ghost is laid to rest.'
