Re: The Haunting of the Rose - Chapter 5, Therefore I am Nothing

The spirit heaved and arched back against itself, rising from the ground as it struggled.  Its voices snarling and cursing as it struggled against itself.  Smoke rose from the spirit itself now as three distinct clouds roiling with a pale, sickening glow.  The spirit collapsed beneath them its form becoming indistinct and luminous.

Now was the hardest part of the rite Drex faced, he had exorcised the daemons from the spirit but they were now free in this ritual space and could escape where ever they wished.  Drex had to act quickly to banish them to the ethereal plane.

Though the daemons seemed uninterested in escape as they rushed towards Drex in a swirling cloud of putrid blackness.

[Another religion check please! This one is at 17.  Failure means the daemons get to make attacks against Drex's will and attempt to posses (charm) him.]

Drex's eyes, like his holy symbol shone with golden radiates. BY THE POWER OF THE AURELIANS BE GONE! RETURN SWIFTLY TO YOUR ABODES, HARMING NON ON YOUR WAY!
The is a bright flash of light enveloping the entire room for a split second, and it was gone.
Drex's eyes, and orbs returned to normal, the giant eitheric figures and glowing circle fades back to nothing. It would seem its over.

The daemons screamed and cursed you vowing their vengeance and that of their great god upon you as with the fading of that brilliant light, so did the daemons vanish.

The ball of light, which was the spirit's corporeal form now, rose and spoke in a voice you had not heard before but which you believed for once was its own.  "Thank you for freeing me from that torment, though I would beg of you to forgive me my crimes against you this day.  For they are the failures of my own weakness." his voice quavered thickly.

Your thanks is well received, but to claim it as merely part of our duty would be a blatant  lie. It was done for more selfish reasons, and there is where my weakness lies. But be in peace spirit. Drex bows his head in respect.

The kaetyma gave a respectful nod to the spirit. "May I inquire how it came that this daemon possessed you? As it would appear we may have made a recurring enemy that I would like to be prepared for.", he asked the being then.

Stepping out from the shadows after a long observation, Ceba took a moment to examine the spirit. He had once been well-versed in dealing with spirits; albeit spirits of a different kind, and therefore he was once more uncertain of exactly what to do.
So, trusting his colleagues with dealing with the spirit, he instead turned his focus to his surroundings, searching for whatever might be of interest to him.

Across from the dais, opposite the direction you had entered the room there was an exit.  Several doors were also built into the steps of the stand-like area of which enclosed the room beyond pit you stood in.  Climbing the walls of the pit would be impossible as they were smoothed sandstone.

The spirit seemed about to depart but stopped as Jubei asked his question.  "Honestly?  I am not sure, the last few days are a dream-like blur in my memory.  I have not been allowed to rest in days.  I think-" the spirit paused.

"I think...I think I might have been dreaming when first I heard those voices."

"No." the spirit said.  "This place and this realm isn't my domain.  My home lies to the east from here, in a land of hills and grass where fingers of stone peak out from the earth to trace the lines of the stars across the sky." he added.

"Those daemons weren't from here either, and they were very old as well, two or three centuries I think."

Willa turns to the others, perplexed.  "Is us?  Is 'cause Willa and friends and Narayans come?  What else is?  Also, how to make spirit to come here so quickly?  Demons also?"

"I don't know.  We-they could track you somehow, across realms.  I have yet to make sense of it, I am very tired.  This realm wears upon me and I must soon depart I can spare you but a moment more before the agony returns me to the spectral plane."  The ball, which was the remains of the spirits corporeal existence was an begining to dissolve.  Vapor trailing off and some droplets condensing from it to falll upon the sand.  Raw ectoplasm in its various forms,

Re: The Haunting of the Rose - Chapter 5, Therefore I am Nothing

Willa had intended to ask the spirit about this place and what was in it, but it didn't sound like it would know anything more, having only been here for a very short amount of time and a prisoner as well.  The only thing it did seem to have was some knowledge of was the thoughts and intentions of the demons that had dominated it.

She remembered Phelan's concerns many days ago and, without any other questions coming, thought to ask about them.

"Spirit knows hows machines-things beings controlled are?"

With the spirit's essence wreaking, Drex waits for the last question to be answered. As soon as that's done, Drex kniels down in respect. With a swift movement of his hand he breaks the circle. 'You are reliesed!'

"I don't know, I don’t recall how I was able to possess a body of metal and stone...but I remember singing.  Like a music I could only hear in my bones.  It’s a strange thing, I can’t place.”  once Drex spoke his command the circle flashed a final time as the glowing remnant of the spirit melted away.  He spoke once more.  ”Grace be with you, all your days.”

"Sorry Willa, I had to. It needed to be returned and I could not wait any longer. But This music or singing might be a clue that we could use." He looks towards the artificer of the group. "Did the Narayah make use of sound-magic to control metal and stone constructs like the body the spirit possessed or the automata, I think that what you called them, that we fought?"

Phelan had busied himself inspecting and salvaging what he could from the mechanical dragon's remains.  Most of what he found was decaying ectoplasm.  Some residue he could extract and either use or sell as a spell component.

[You can choose to add 1 vial of Ectoplasmic Residue to your inventory worth 1/4 of wealth token.]

Ceba paused for a moment, considering how best to answer Drex's question.

"It is possible
That the Narayah of old
Used such odd methods.

However, as from
A military standpoint
It would be foolish.

While music has value
To bards, minstrels and the old,
It is bad for war..."

Phelan's response came as he carefully slid off the remains of the automata. "Ceba, we had Songcasters as auxiliary. Still do, in fact!" His voice was exasperated as he hit the ground. "Ancestors, my mother is one herself. Also made her good at yelling. But anyway." Pocketing the vial of ectoplasm, he made his way back to the group.

"I think I know what the spirit may be referring to." He frowned, martialling his thoughts. "Narayah automata are capable of communicating with each other at distance, and we could send orders and recieve information as well. The best description would be that it could be... Sent through the air similar to some magical communication spells. Being sound-based, it's possible that's what the spirit was referring to."

Jubei was stroking his chin, his gaze drifted across the grand arena they were in still. "We will not be able to find it here. And by the sound of it, there might be multiple of these... devices. But yes, there must be a source. Perhaps we are headed for it already... or we could ask the helpful walls for directions to such a thing.", he spoke up then after a while.

The idea of song and music as a form of communication during battle made no sense to Ceba. Then again, he had always been tone-deaf. Applying his skills eslewhere,Ceba perked up his ears and listened close for the origin of the sound.

"I doubt that that will work, either way, we should press on. If I'm not mistaken there should be another gate on the other side of this arena, considering how they usually operate.", Jubei spoke and then set himself into motion, stepping past the ruined machine and towards where the exit laid.
