For some reason, the image is not showing up for me.

I have also been reading up on the dazed condition.  It says that you cannot take any immediate or opportunity actions.  The description of the Warlock's Pact Boon feature does not appear to take an action to trigger (though initially placing the curse does).  So, I think, if an enemy dies whilst under my curse, it will still triggers the boon even if I am dazed.

Finally, this place is turning into de-buff central.  Enduring weakened and dazed conditions is getting pretty heavy.  Even if its not needed for hp and spells, we may want to consider a long rest after this encounter to get rid of that weakened state the rest of you have.

As far as I am aware effects like a pact boon are free actions on their triggers.

Depends on the pact boon. However Fate of the Void is a Free Action on its trigger. Actually they all seem to be free actions except for Elemental Pact (it's an Immediate Reaction)

OOC - General Chat 03

Could someone link me the source document (or tell me where to find it) listing which pact triggers are free actions?  I have access to both the compendium and the character builder and neither state that Fate of the Void requires anything from the character to trigger.  Only the Darkspiral Aura retributive effect (immediate Interrupt) and the elemental pact (immediate reaction).  Here is the exact phrasing from the compendium for Star Pact:

When an enemy under your Warlock’s Curse is reduced to 0 hit points or fewer, you gain a +1 bonus to any single d20 roll you make before the end of your next turn (attack roll, saving throw, skill check, or ability check). If you don’t use this bonus by the end of your turn, it is lost.
This bonus is cumulative; if three cursed enemies drop to 0 hit points or fewer before your next turn, you gain a +3 bonus to a d20 roll during your turn.

Here is the description of Eldritch Pact:

You have forged a pact with mysterious entities that grant you your arcane powers. Choose one pact. The pacts presented in the Player’s Handbook are the fey pact, the infernal pact, and the star pact. Other products present additional pacts. The pact you choose determines the following warlock abilities:
At-Will Spells: Your pact determines one of the at-will spells you know.
Pact Boon: Each pact includes a pact boon. The pact boon is a granted power you can use to further hex your enemies.
The pact you take also provides bonuses to certain warlock powers. Individual powers detail the effects (if any) your Eldritch Pact selection has on them.

And here is the entry for free actions:

Free actions take almost no time or effort. A creature can usually take as many free actions as it wants during any turn, including other creatures’ turns. Examples: Speaking a few sentences, dropping a held item, letting go of a grabbed creature.
There is an exception to this rule: A creature can take a free action to use an attack power only once per turn. Creatures don’t normally have attack powers that can be used as free actions, but some powers and other effects grant the ability to use an attack power (usually a basic attack) as a free action. For instance, a character might have two different abilities that let him or her make a melee basic attack as a free action when their respective triggers occur. If both abilities are triggered on the same turn, the character can make only one of the melee basic attacks during that turn. This limitation does not apply to free actions that a creature is forced to take by an enemy.
In certain circumstances, the DM might decide to limit the use of free actions further. For instance, if an adventurer has already used free actions during a particular turn to talk, drop things, and use a class feature, the DM might rule that the adventurer can use no more free actions during that turn.

Action Description
Delay Put off a turn until later in the initiative order
Drop held items Drop any items currently held
End a grab Let go of an enemy
Spend an action point Spend an action point to take an extra action (once per encounter, not in a surprise round)
Talk Speak a few sentences

To me, it sounds like the Pact Boon triggers whether I want it to or not.  That could be important in certain situations, like if I am unconscious, stunned, petrified or what have you.

Of course, if we cannot find the source information to say it is a free action, but we believe that it is 'rules as intended' or we just want to make that call, that's fine too :)

EDIT: Just noticed that the Fey Pact "Misty Step" specifically states that it is a Free Action.  The others do not.

I'm currently using the compendium app on my phone. Take a look at the warlock class entry as it may be in there, alternatively if you're using the character builder, go into sheet mode (the one that allows you to go through pages, and will include all the powers, including class/race ones). You should find the pact boon there. Either way,t hey should show up as at-wills and explain the trigger and action, as per usual power format.

I cannot find it in the compendium or many of the feature's descriptions in the character builder, but you're right.  It does appear at least once as a free action power card there.  Thanks :)

I suspect that may just be because the character builder is incapable of showing a 'power card' without an action type.  I feel that if it was meant to be a free action it would be highlighted in other descriptions of the class feature too as not everyone has access to the character builder  (I spent 2 hours this morning trawling the web for sources where it may have been listed as such and not found any).  However, I have also not found anything stating that it is not a free action either.

So yup - thanks :)

Actually the character builder does this regularly. Remember that not all powers are represented in it (like all the leader token healing powers) outside of going into sheet mode and going to the right page.  I admit I haven't checked the compendium on the browser side, but on the mobile app, the Warlock entry lists the pact boons and their actions (except for Sorcerer King).

Glad to help. :) Just glad I got the DDI stuff working again!

If you all are wondering why there is so much commotion on the Combat Map, its because these guys have alot of shifting movement powers.  So they can basically rearrange themselves quite effectively when the situation demands it and they have very dangerous tactical behaviour.

@Author: Thank you for updating Willa's dazed condition.  I had forgotten it.

EDIT: So attacking from invisibility normally provides combat advantage (+2 to attack rolls).  Under the House Rules, I think that means I have 5E Advantage (roll twice on attacks and take the highest?) for Willa's attack.  I have recorded each roll separately in case I am wrong about that, in which case just add +2 to the first roll made against each enemy.

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

I think my next turn is going to be extremely complicated.  Unless anyone has any better ideas, this is what I am thinking:

Minor Action: Curse Sword Auto 1
Standard Action: Dire Radiance (2 chances to hit at +9 to hit.  Hopefully I can make a 19 with that)
THEN IF:

1) I hit and Sword Auto 1 survives.  Change my move action to a minor one and use my helm to determine its remaining hp.  Depending on what's left either Action Point to hit it with my daily or let someone else try to finish it off.  If left to someone else Daily sword 2 as below.

2) I hit and Sword Auto 1 dies.  Trigger my pact boon through my rod, spreading my curse to all enemies within 5 squares of Sword Auto 1, then AP and daily sword auto 2.

i) If sword auto 2 is hit and bloodied, change my move action to a minor action and use 'Taking Advantage' racial to end its aura.

ii) If sword auto 2 is hit and not bloodied, or not hit at all, move to maintain my Shadow Walk ability

4) I miss Sword Auto 1.  Action Point and attempt to Daily it.  If it dies, trigger pact boon to spread curse to all enemies within 5 squares, then move to maintain Shadow Walk.

@Author - the presentation of this may get messy, sorry.

If our illustrious Author is happy to let me split my turn up into separate posts and also happy to respond to each, sure that would probably be easier.  Also it might be better to use Eldritch blast instead of Dire Radiance.  I have +2 to hit with Dire Radiance, but the Sword Auto's Fort is 2 points higher than its reflex, so the roll to hit is actually the same.  The difference is that Eldritch blast has higher potential damage on the turn it hits, whereas dire radiance has better damage over time, if the target moves closer to Walla.

After the days that have gone by in this encounter and folks not posting the grace I've been giving out to you guys to take some time to post is now official spent, its dried up, its caput. From now on, I will strictly be enforcing the houserules in combat around Inaction.  From now on you will have approximately 24 hours to post your action in a round or else the Inaction rules will come into effect, if you do not have tactics written down on your character sheet in a clear and concise manner your character will take a Total Defence action on his turn and only respond with Attacks of Opportunity.  Are we clear?

Yes, sorry. I'll do better. :(

I've done some stats on the combat so far, if anyone cares:

Initiative: 24/4/17 to 25/4/17
Declaration that we got to go 1st: 27/4/17
1st round: 28/4/17 to 01/05/17
Enemy round: 3/5/17
2nd round: 3/5/17 to 6/5/17
Enemy Round: 8/15/17
3rd round: 8/5/147 to 10/5/17 (Phelan took Drex's turn on 10th)
Enemy Round: 11/5/17
4th Round: 12/5/17 to 13/5/17
Enemy Round: 13/5/17
5th Round: 13/5/17 to 15/5/17
Enemy Round: 16/5/17
6th Round: 16/5/17 to 18/5/17

6 Player Rounds and 5 Enemy Rounds in 22 days (27/4 to 19/5, includes 27th in the count)

Author took 2+2+1+0+1 = 7 days for 5 enemy turns = An average of 1.4 days per round

Adjusting the count for player days down by 3.  2 for the time author took 2 days and 1 for the day the author posted on 0 days, for fairness as people may not have expected our author to respond so quickly.

Leaving Players with 19 days for 6 rounds.  Or an average of 3.17 days per round.

EDIT:
Thinking about it this might be the wrong way to do things.  If we had posted within 24 hours each time it would have taken 11 days (5 for author, 6 for us).  SO I guess the player count should be 22-8 (if being generous with the author's 0 day post), meaning 6 rounds in 14 days, or an average of 2.33.  Still too long, of course.

@Drex: Ask Phelan instead, Amare's grasp of magic is tenuous at best.  He's intelligent enough to figure it out but has absolutely no experience with it.  This was demonstrated by the Candle Lighting Spell incident back in Galdion.

I agree once in the cover of the forest we can explore the town and the spire. We need to find more information about everything. And what is our goals here? Destroy big bad, find out more about Jubei's vision. Explore Weyr and the reason there is still activity and then report this to the guild. Is that all?

I tried something new with the combat map so bear with me. I tried composing the field of images instead of background colours.  This may make it impossible to make moves on the map from mobile devices.  Though the image size should be more than manageable for any connection (2400x2400)

Places yourselves in the green area as indicated on the map, the map isn't that blank its just the limit of what you can see at the time of drawing, the enemy is directly to your south.  I'll place the swarm tokens asap.

But its a push, not a slide, they should be moved away from him shouldn't they?  How did they end up in that square?

EDIT: Oh, I see!  The token must have gotten moved at some point, it was supposed to be in AS2!  I'll amend my post.  Actually, thinking about it that was probably my fault.  Willa's token was 'beneath' the 2 swarms that were around her and I had to move them to get to her.  Thought I had put them back in the right place.  Guess not :/  Sorry.  I'll be more observant in the future.

We'll mostly only use roll20 for combat areas that are messy/complicated.

Warlocks don't have much aoe (works better vs swarms).  I've taken some with Willa, but its not very powerful and rather indiscriminate.  However, Jubei, if you shift 2 squares to the north I can attempt to hit 3 of the swarms with 'waktipus'?

It does only do cold damage.  Not sure how effective that is against these things.

At some point I suspect someone asked Amare why the whites of his eyes are black instead of white.  I would believe the question would have come from a Willa-shaped source as well.  His answer: "A physical sign of my peculiar nature.  It was also a compromise between complete blackness-" Amare waves a hand past his eyes and reveals them then to be completely black, no iris or pupils visible whatsoever "-which I believe would unnecessarily distress people and a more normal appearance for humans." he waves the same hand back over his eyes and the usual shimmering iris and dark pupil return.

Okay. Two options. Either we do a phalanx advance toward them, using Jubei as a meat shield, or we hold position and wait for them to come to us. The second route may be more solid, but only Phelan and Ceba can reach currently. For the rest of you, I would recommend readying attacks for when they reach your range.

@Willa: Yeah. Readying is a Standard action, so you can still take a minor to make someone's life (or unlife, or... whatever) be unfortunate. Also yes, C is the mind-controlly one that Phelan was marking as priority.

So I took a look at the Group Book and your XP values seem off...I would strongly encourage you to appoint a bookkeeper for player info like Treasure and Experience Points.  Because no one has elected themselves that position and it's not a good idea to make that my job as well. Considering no one has volunteered previously out of your own little cabal I would urge you to discuss and chose a Bookkeeper now.  This isn't a soul binding "YOU SHALL DO THIS FOR ALL ETERNITY" type of deal, so don't stress it too hard.  Rotate out if you feel you need to or something, just get your important notes in order.

Also, DMs naughty list this year:
ZebraKoala: Your character sheet lacks a tactics section, please make one.  Also on Equipment, it says WEAPON not weapons, list only the current weapon in use.  You have equipment on your character sheet to store that information.  Same applies to everyone else your weapon listed there is the DEFAULT your use unless stated in the thread otherwise that is the one I expect you to wield and the source of the statistics I will use if I have to run your character during a turn.
Drex: The same goes for you.
Willa: Speed and Initiative entries remain unfilled on your character sheet.
Everyone: General housekeeping of the book and respective information.

@Willa: Oh I ain't roasting ya, I've updated the character sheet several times over the last few years.  I believe I did mention the updates here most of the time, though my memory may be mistaken.  Besides that I have made notes on your character sheet (see the little orange triangles or just click on the speech balloon in each tab to reveal them all) pertaining to questions about stuff on it.

Max informs me that "housekeeping" is  too unspecific, so let me iron that out more.  I mean take a look at the character sheet template and try to copy its style and layout.  That sheet has been made to be very easy to read and guide the eye around.

Zebra is currently experiencing an admin sad.

But I'll do some fiddling to fix the sheet up. Is the default weapon the only issue? Also... tactics? I have literally one tactic: hide behind Jubei and shoot the things. Template copying shall be done to reflect this.

Furthermore... This bookkeeping position. What does it entail? Because I'll happily do this job provided I have a quick rundown of what the service entails.

@Cebakaala: Take an example from Willa, a point by point, kinda AI scriptish writeup that should cover you in most tactical situations.

As for bookkeeping this would mean two things (at least in my mind).  The first, keeping the Experience Tracker in the Journal Section up to date.  Secondly making sure that the party wealth is kept up to date in the Equipment and Wealth section.

Yeah, I spotted the reflex thing when I was trying to see what had changed.

I'm aware that either Con or Charisma can be used for the attack.  That's why Willa's attacks are always made using her Charisma (the higher stat).  The original version of the power only allowed for attacks to be made with Con.

I excluded mentioning the option to use Con on her character sheet, to save space.  Sorry for the confusion :)

The defenders (WD) have strong Will and we have yet to hit their Fort defence. They’re Soldiers and likely have Reflex as a lower defence (as evidenced by their relatively equal AC). That was what Phelan was trying to convey before he used his daily.

Oh it's valid, and I'll be very happy if an 18 hits. Problem is descriptions and the like (and a barely-successful knowledge check. I rolled a 3. D: ) seem to suggest a higher Fort. Still, if it hits, that'll be very good info since we know it's higher than 17.

If Amare hits at least we'll know their Reflex then. If it's somehow higher I will stop suggesting that course of action. :P

@Author - what happened to WDII?

It is still on the combat tracker and the last thing I see posted about it is that it is in square M31.  However that space is currently occupied by WTI, which as far as I can tell should be in square M34.

Thanks :)

@Ceba - how do you feel about getting out of your current position?  Willa has enough movement to be able to get to (M or N)32, triggering an attack from whatever is in square M31, using its reaction.  That should allow you to move away behind Iron Jubei.  IT will also mean that WIlla can use her last AoE without risk of hurting you (she can move forward then ready the action to trigger once you are out of range.  I,uh, think :P).  Though the attack (again) targets fort, which is not great.  But at least you'll be out of danger for the most part.

@Willa: Enemies were moved around by Amare's teleport shenanigans. WTI has fallen from 15 feet above M31 and is now prone in that square (and thus can share the space with WDII).

Also Ceba is immobilized, which is why he hasn't moved yet. He's been failing at saving throws to get free. :(

Would recommend trying to take out the artillery, especially the one Phelan marked for attack rerolls on, so we don't get AoEd again.

Also, Willa has just 1 waterskin.  I assume umbreans need to drink (?) so is that empty now?

Thanks :)

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

@Willa: Usually I don't worry about your supplies, as you are generally out in the wild and have some easy access to drink and water that gets abstracted into your resting cycle.  However you are deep in a dungeon and in a place you can not get access to either food or water.  You are cut off.  So supplies start to matter then, this is why I mentioned it.  Also Umbreans do eat physical food, but vanishingly little.  Willa can subsist on a thimble of organic material a day with no issue.  Water on the other hand is the limiting factor.  Despite her size Willa consumes as much water as an adult human being.  You had access to water on your journey from the crystal tower so you would have at least refilled your waterskin there.  Food wise, I hope you brought rations.  Though for Willa 1 ration would last a little over a week (say 8 days worth of food from 1 standard travel ration).  You don't have to fret about Amare, he has explained he doesn't need food, sleep or water.  He is also an emergency source of supplies as he can create simple, mundane items.  Though how adept he is at making food is a matter up for debate.

Okay well, Willa doesn't have any rations.  I never knew I needed them because I'd been led to believe (probably by a misunderstanding somewhen) that umbreans feed solely of of psionic energy.  This is the first I've heard about her needing any other type of food :/

Oh its only really a worry if you are drinking pure water, believe it or not, you typical water source contains enough contaminants that it would classify as food for Willa.  So she may entirely be under a false impression of how her own body works (this was intentional).

Thanks Ceba!

Here's the thing with the xp, though - at some point mine was linked to the journal page, so I thought it was being updated by somebody there.  So I just checked thinking, np - I'll just update it on the Journal page myself.  Then I noticed something very clever, whoever was updating it there before, had itemised many of the xp gains, as follows:

2900+150+25+250+150+100+180=3755

Which is awesome, many thanks to whoever whoever did that! So a quick check between that total and Ceba's shows the difference to be 80xp (3835 and 3755).  Exactly what was just awarded.  Which means everything is cool and matches up great.  However, because the xp on the sheet was itemised so readily, I decided to check the previous xp award before this one, just because.  Unfortunately, its not 180, its 190!  Could be a typo, right?  Sure but then the end tallies would not be 80 xp different.  So I did an audit and came up with the following xp awards:

23-Apr-18 -  80xp
07-Jan-18 - 190xp
15-Dec-17 - 200xp
21-Sep-17 - 180xp
19-May-17 - 180xp
05-Apr-17 - 100xp
18-Feb-17 - 250xp & 150xp
13-Oct-16 - 25xp
10-Oct-16 - 150xp

As you can see the series in the Journal Tally: 150+25+250+150+100+180, matches up to the xp awards between 10-Oct-2016 and 19-May-2017.  So, what happened to the xp after 19-May-2017? Was it added into the xp chunk at the start of the formula, or has it not been added on at all?

Well, thankfully, our illustrious GM has helped answer that.  On 18-Feb-17, along with the xp awarded, he told us that our total xp was: 3475.  2900+150+25+250+150=3475!  This means the 2900 xp in the journal tab can only be all xp awarded before 10 October 2016.  Conclusion?  We have not tallied our xp since 19-May-2017!

Total current xp should therefore be: 2900+150+25+250+150+100+180+180+200+190+80=4405!

I've updated the journal, if anyone's xp isn't still linked to it, I suggest you re-link it.  Unless of course, you think I have screwed up somewhere, in which case the information to put everything back to how it was is here and I'll do so, if you point out my error.

Thanks :)

Making this post here so you can see the time stamp for it before I make any rolls (trying to avoid delaying things by waiting for a response since it seems simple enough) - Willa is going to try and aid another for the first objective instead of contributing to it herself otherwise, but only if failing to aid another does not count as her failing objective one.  If failing to aid another does count as failing objective one, she will not risk it and the attempt should be ignored (even if my subsequent roll turns out to be a success).

Thanks :)

Actually, rereading the rules again, I did goof, you should technically be finished.  However I have delayed you by one round (thankyou scratchpad) due to the critical failures suffered in objective one rolls which doesn't negate your success on a round but doesn't grant you a pass either.  So all you need do is pass this last round and you should be good.

So the description of Noetic Flexibility does not describe what type of action it is.  I assume it would be an 'immediate interrupt' (i.e. the one per round type.  No the once per turn opportunity action), but is it a At-Will, Encounter, or Daily ability?

Considering how rarely the Dominated status comes up and that it only works approx. 50% of the time, I would argue that At-Will makes sense (and not just because it may come in useful right now ^^)

Hmmm, but the nature of the text, "-you are dominated-" it is a trigger/reaction ability but yes it would be at-will as the design intent was to have it be useful every time some afflicts you with the charmed/dominated status.

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

@Author - I'm a simple person.  I fail all the time at reading between lines, comprehension and inferrence.  I need things to be explained.  Otherwise I wont understand or more likely (and worse) will completely misunderstand, the things someone is trying to confer.

For example, I haven't the foggiest what "You have to overwhelm it," means.  With words, logic, magic power, herself, the room?

So, I struggle with situations like this.  Having my character isolated and thrust into a surreal situation without obvious direction (to my poor insight anyway) is very difficult for me.  I spend literally hours (time I don't really have) writing each post I make, pouring over the previous posts and even previous threads for anything that might help.  But even then, in the end it still all comes down to luck over judgement.

Because of this I really struggled with the scene at the stone slab and the dream-like sequence in the shadow temple.  And I am struggling here too.  I am very grateful that you are giving Willa the opportunity to have her own narratives from time to time, but there is a reason why she is 'simple'...and its not her low Wisdom stat.  Its mine.  I simply cannot write a character with more insight than my own.

Now this isn't some weird plea for Willa's life.  If her actions lead to her death, that's fine.  I just want you to understand that if I end up doing something incredibly stupid compared to what you had intended, it is not because I am purposefully throwing her under the bus, or testing you in anyway.  It is just because I have no idea what the fuck I am supposed to be doing XD

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

As a rule I don't mind clarifying things for players.  Afterall a GM provides not just the world but also context for the player's interaction with that world.  Though rarely, in situations like this it is a test of character.  At do or die, at that moment you must achieve self-actualization on your own.  Craig, you managed that for Willa sterlingly.  By 1) constructing a system of value, 2) transforming suffering and internalizing meaning and 3) confronting evil in a meaningful and sympathetic way attaining synthesis and choosing to remain yourself in the process.

TL;DR version (or translating the klatchian): Willa took the attempt at coercion by the Nemesis and not only saw it for what it was but intuited the nature of the entity itself and saw not an enemy but instead someone suffering who needs help.

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

Your notes are probably fine. I removed the accurate rod at some point, specifically because I realised it was going to be absolutely ages before I would have a chance to grab the feat for it (When I first penned the list I did not realise how long levellling would take).  I should have said something, but I assumed you would refer to the forums.  Never crossed my mind you'd keep separate notes on character progression.  Sorry :(

EDIT:

So it seems I've been a bit dense.

It's been a while since I looked at magic items and have gotten vicious and deadly muddled in my head.  Vicious is a type of magic rod, where as deadly is a superior implement quality - I was thinking they were the other way around and thus you had given Willa a rod with two superior implement qualities.

A Vicious rod actually increases Willa's curse damage to D8s, so that will work fine for her.  As well as still carrying the +1 enhancement.  That means the base rod is basically a straight swap for the rod of corruption (in terms of gold value at least).  Willa can 'grow' into the accurate property at some point.

I should mention though that Willa was meant to end up duel-wielding the two rods together, since the rod of corruption could be wielded in her off-hand and still activate its property.  Whilst, I loved the story involving it, I'm now a bit stuck with its loss.  Not sure what to replace it with, as it would be weird for her to just get another.

EDIT EDIT:

I do review WIlla's progression post every now and again (like once every 3 or 4 months).  I don't always change anything and will try to remember to tell you if I do going forward, but you might want to double check your notes against what's there.  In case I made any other amendments.  I may have forgotten a modification or two made over the years.

Again I am really sorry for this :/

Another rod of corruption is not out of the question just one of a different sort.  You made the last one from the influence of a very vicious curse (see Nemesis).  That came to bite ya in the bud.  Corruption in and of itself isn't evil.  But the source of corruption Willa drew on for her first rod was.  You could find a source of corruption that is not malign.

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

Hello all :)

So I'll offer the same details I provided the GM, as I'll be seeking assistance and patience/understanding :)

quote:
I have been RPG'ing in numerous forms for the last 20+ years, though the majority of my RPG'ing has been D&D 3.0/3.5/pathfinder.  My daughter (now 20) has been playing 4e since she was in grade 8 (D&D club at school; makes a father proud).

In all that time she hasn't been interested in my playing in her games (likely not cool as a teenager to have your father play as a member of the group).  Now that she's done college, she has a group that plays via skype.  She is away for the summer, but upon her return, her boyfriend intends to start a new game (he is the GM) and they've invited me to play.

So, what I'm looking for is a GM who can take an experienced roleplayer (who doesn't have any 4e experience) under his (or her) wing to teach me the ropes before she gets back.  If that's not you, I understand.  I was going to post in the GM wanted thread, but figured I'd try this first.

Late note: I realize I made an error in that post to the GM...that should read 30+ years (LOL).

All that having been said, it's my understanding that this group has need of a 'controller', so I'm thinking either a wizard or an Invoker.

Thoughts on the best way to go with reasons: and go!

I have to say, that's some rp pedigree you have there :O

We're definitely lacking on AoE and CC, so I think a Controller is good choice.

Some things to note about learning the game, here:

1 - This game has a lot of Homebrewed content, most notably the races but also some smaller things like currency.

2 - In my experience play by post games, especially those as established as this one tend to progress slowly.  They are certainly no comparison to playing the game at a table or in realtime (or as near as) in such places as Roll20.  Though 4E is one of the least popular versions of D&D, as I understand it, so finding a game on there may be difficult.

Otherwise welcome aboard :D

EDIT: @Author Does Willa get the xp for the end of the encounter too?  She was absent for basically all of it, but didn't get any for her own little, uh, excursion.  I mean, I assume so since we have 'normalised' xp across the group, but you know me - I've a little bit of OCD about being sure about these things :P Thanks!

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

Hello indeed! Welcome to the game!

Controller-wise I would recommend an invoker. Less prone to friendly fire issues; 4E doesn’t have vancianc saying so wizard’s superiority is less prevalent in that aspect. If you have questions, I actively play both Pathfinder and 4E so I can make comparisons as needed.

@Willa:  Oh she gets xp too, its basically her share for the other worldly experience she had.

EDIT: Jubei's player is out of his country for a week so he can't resolve his scene until next week.  So I'd suggest you guys take other actions while we let the spirit shenanigans be resolved when he gets back.

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

Invoker
I have never played an Invoker before.  Let's see:

Stats (Primary Wisdom, Secondary Con or Int)
I think I'd favour Wisdom and Int.  Our Author likes his skill challenges.  Though obviously, a high Con gives you much more survivability.

HP:
Low

Defences:
Good
+1 to Fort, Reflex and Will.
Chainmail Armour

Skills:
Not too many trained, but (as stated above) favouring both Intellect and Wisdom is nice

Divine Covenants:
Maledictor's Doom (Any Secondary Stat) - Seems powerful and could couple well with Willa who uses fear attacks a lot.  Range is a bit short for someone with so little hp.  Luckily we have a giant of a tank and it only targets enemies.

Preserver's Rebuke (Int Secondary Stat): Good range, To hit bonus is fine.  Virtually guaranteed to be useable each encounter.  Probably the most reliable of the channel divinities.

Armour of Wrath (Con Secondary Stat): A poor 'escape' with a little damage. Situational.  Can't say I like it.

At Will Attacks
Astral Wind (Benefits from high Con).
+Decent damage for a Controller. +Couples with Willa's Dire Radiance.
-Short Range. -Targets Fortitude. -Targets everything in the AOE.

Avenging Light (Benefits from high Con).
+Decent Range. +Decent Damage. +Basic Attack.
-Targets Fortitude*. -Offers no 'Controller' support

Divine Bolts
+Decent Range. +Decent Damage when used on 2 targets. +Targets Reflex
-Does not offer much in the way of 'Controller' support (just hits 2 targets)

Grasping Shards
+Decent Range. +AOE. +Great Controller support (slows those it hits)
-Targets Fortitude.  -Low damage.

Hand of Radiance
+Decent Range. +Targets Reflex. +No real drawbacks
Okay Damage.  Limited Controller support (Just targeting 3 creatures)

Mantle of the Infidel
+Huge Range.  +Targets Will. +Couples well with Iron Jubei.
-Single Target only

Sun Strike
+Decent Range.  +Targets Reflex.  +Basic Attack. +Slides Target. +Reasonable Damage
-Single Target only

Vanguard's Lightning (Benefits form high Intelligence)
+Decent range. +AOE.  +Targets Reflex.
Very situational Controller Support (Punishes enemy Opportunity Attacks)

Visions of Blood
+Targets Will. +Decent Controller Support.  +Psychic Damage.** Fear Attack***
-Short Range. -Targets everything in the AOE.

*Targeting Fortitude is not awful but, generally speaking, its one of the consistently higher defences.
**Psychic damage is normally one of the least likely resisted damage types
***You get a bonus to attack rolls on abilities with the Fear keyword if you choose to play as an Umbrean

Damage types: most At Wills are radiant, next is lightning, with a single psychic attack.

Races:
Deseekay:
They have +Wisdom which is great, but lack any bonus to secondary stats.  Die Hard is very nice for any character, but less so for those hoping to go under the enemy's radar.  Both Vital Surge and Breath of Life are just a fantastic abilities imo, though it is the latter that most favours a leader/supporter role.  The one per encounter extra shift distance could be awesome.

Optional Racial Feats: Nothing really game changing for a controller.  Added mobility from Greater Grace of the Wild is nice.

Appearance: A man with a horse's head.  Like a minotaur, but less horny.

Doola Tywuar: Do not support primary stat.  Do have a boost to Con. Ferocious is very nice for someone hoping not to draw too much attention from the enemy.  Dragon's Roar is a decent get out of jail free card and could couple well with Astral Wind if you used an Action surge.

Optional Racial Feats: Again, nothing amazing.

Appearance: Dragonborn-esque?

Ehuron: Support your primary stat (no matter what it is).  No secondary stat support.  Very nice bonus to Fort, Ref and Will saves.  Living construct is fine.  Customisation is awesome.  Resilience is fine.  Oversoul and Gadgetry may lack the obvious power of some other racial abilities, but can turn the battle if used well.

Optional Racial Feats: I like them all to be honest.  Nothing that will really benefit a controller too much, but they're all just generally strong.

Appearance: Advanced and sleek robotic design constructed from overlapping plates.

Human: No primary stat boost, but supports either of your secondary stats.  Other racials are very general - useful to anyone but not really favouring any particular role.

Optional Racial Feats: Again, both good.  Knight of Atorius for a Boost to Wisdom makes this race a much more viable invoker.

Appearance: Horrific mutant bipeds with skin tones ranging from very pale, through the orange/tan spectrum, to basically black.  Sporting patches of hair and a penchant for being absolutely everywhere.

Kaetyma: No primary stat support.  Boost to Con.  They are large creatures, so not really good for classes trying to stay out of the limelight.  Unhindered speed is potentially useful for helping to avoid facing enemies up close, but their size is too detrimental imo.  Either Dragon's Breath or Dragon's Fury would be a nice addition to any Controller's arsenal.

Optional Racial Feats: Enlarged Dragon Breath is fantastic if you have that power, however:

SPECIAL NOTE: I was wondering, Author, if you considered adding the other Dragonborn Breath attack racials to the Kaetyma.  The best one by far (no pun intended) for a controller would be Hurl Breath.

Appearance: A Dragontaur (Like a centaur but 100 times cooler) with some colourful feathers thrown in (because they weren't awesome enough already)

Musadi: No primary stat support, but can boost both secondary stats.  Like Kaetyma are large and therefore difficult to recommend for anyone that isn't a front-line fighter.  Prescience is fantastic for a controller who wants to take their turn asap in combat, though initiative and turn order is handled a little differently in this RPOL game.  Vitality is a good alternative too.  Shifting coils has a lot of Controller utility, but would be risky for one to use as it means exposing yourself to danger.  Better saved for defenders.  Serpent's sway looks amazing to me, however.

Optional Racial Feats: From the Deep is great.  Leviathan's gift actually has its place for a Controller - it would make your AOEs much more devastating against groups of opponents for one turn, but it is severely hampered by being a daily power.

Appearance: A Giant Naga/Salamander like creature (Snake Tail, human-like but scaly torso and a reptilian head).

Narayah: Supports both Primary stat and secondary (as long as its intelligence).  Archetype is 'cute' :D Resistance to Psychic Damage is kinda unique and awesome.  Multitasking seems like it could be fantastic for a controller, though I don't know enough about Invokers to say for certain.  Nimble Reversal seems...okay.  Its a good dodge, but moves you in the direction the attack came from.  Tanslocation seems really powerful in the right situation.

Optional Racial Feats: Able combatant is outrageously good and critter combat training is decent.

Appearance: One of the two small races and the second best of them (no bias here!).  Looks like a raccoon and a fox had a baby, with some red panda genes thrown in.  Bipedal.

Ulh: Supports both Primary stat and secondary (as long as its Constitution).  None of its racials look to benefit a controller, not that they hinder them either.

SPECIAL NOTE: Making use of all you've got used to be an umbrean ability.  I'm not sure if it got moved to Ulh and the skill names weren't changed or it is listed there in error.  Clarification, Author?

Optional Racial Feats: Subversive Will is a brilliant controller power.

Appearance: A white lion man.

Umbrean: Supports both Primary stat and secondary (as long as its intelligence).  Disquiet - from what I've seen you can go heavily into fear with an Invoker, so this could be really good for you.  The rest of the racials are pretty meh and, imo, the useable abilities are little underpowered compared to other races.  Taking advantage is still good though and nice for a controller.

Optional Racial Feats:
Emulation - could good for a pluraton if Umbreans really are still meant to have 'making use of all you've got' but is probably not worth the feat it costs since you can only have 1 power available at any given time.
Shared Awareness is pretty nice.
Unnoticed has the potential to be very powerful, though is better suited to something like a rogue.

Appearance: living snot with arms, legs and eyestalks.

Weaver:
Crafter Caste: Supports Primary stat. Suffers from large size.

Soldier Caste: Supports Primary and Secondary Stats (as long as its Con).  Suffers from large size.

Monarch: Supports Primary Stat only, but is still probably the best option due to it being medium size.

Harmony maybe the most overpowered ability in the class abilities, but only really when there are two weavers.  Its still really good without, though its range is small.   Necromorphosis is extremely powerful as well.  Weaver Toxin is alright, but not something you want to be in a position to use.

Racial Feats:
Flying Leap has its uses, but may not be worth the feat cost.
Hardened Carapace is really good.
I think Mimicry could be amazing, but there are so many conditions attached to it, its hard to judge how often it would actually be useable.

Current Situation:
Our current group consists of 1 Deseekay (Drex), 1 Kaetyma (Iron Jubei), 2 Narayahs (Phelan Drixons and Cebakaala) and 1 Umbrean (Willa).  IIRC We have previously met a Doola, a Musadi, an Ehuron and another Umbrean.
We are currently inside a complex that has been sealed for hundreds of years, making it difficult to justify the presence of many of the races.  However, there is a sizeable Narayah contingent outside and much machinery (meaning a Ehuron may be feasible?).

Overall
Considering all of the above, I'd say its best to go for either Narayah* or Ehuron.  You could go Umbrean too, though I doubt many people would like the idea of rp-ing a disgusting blob.

*I personally think that Narayah are generally the most powerful of all the races, so don't find it surprising that they're topping my list.  However, I'd personally still choose Ehuron - for setting and aesthetic reasons.

Disclaimer:
This is all my opinion and I may be way off with my assessments.  As I said, I've not played an Invoker before.

Hi Sardis! Hope you enjoy our game and compony! We do tend to have waves of active play and slumps in play as well. I think we're at the end of one of those slumps. (well at least in my perspective)
But it seems to work for us and our lifestyles. Seeing this game is still going strong for about 6 years now @Author?

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

Right. Invoker advice.

First off, our GM is fairly gentle so you shouldn't feel the need to powerbuild as much, so racial options are a bit more open. That said, a bit of a primer to support Willa's information.

There are three convenants to the Invoker. Wrath, Malediction, and Preservation.

The Wrath Invoker uses Constitution as a secondary score, and will be favouring heavier armour as a result. The riders on their powers tend to favour extra damage, putting you in the role of a Striker-secondary. You end up like a blaster cleric in Pathfinder.

The Preservation Invoker uses Intelligence as a secondary score, and will end up favouring light armour (4E has highest of Dex or Int for AC). Their riders lean toward a support archetype, boosting defences or sliding allies around, a bit like a Leader. Or, again, a Pathfinder Cleric in concept.

The Malediction Invoker can use Intelligence or Constitution as a secondary. Their riders tend to reduce the drawbacks for using some powers (as those powers can be powerful, but usually debuff you as a result).

Armor of Wrath is a fairly lacklustre Channel Divinity, incidentally.
Maledictor's Doom will work well with Willa (and also with Phelan later on).
Preserver's Rebuke continues the stereotype of Preservers being supportive in that it's, well, supportive and a reliable choice.

Do note that divine characters have access to Domain feats (Drex is using one as I recall), which will boost their at-wills in some way. Divine Bolt, for example, can be used as a ranged basic attack (which is important with some synergies) via the Skill domain feat.

I will recommend you pick one 'targeted' At-Will (like Hand of Radiance) and one area-effect At-will (such as Visions of Blood).

So, race aside for the moment...as far as invoker goes...my first basic decision will need to be whether I want 'leader' or 'striker' to be my secondary role.

So, not knowing the group dynamics...which secondary roll would be more useful to the groups current dynamics?

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

@Sardis:  You should have access to the character sheet in the group book I invited you a few days ago.  I checked and saw for some reason you could only view, I gave you editing permissions, you'll find the tab for your character in the row below, next to the other PCs.  You level will match that of the party which presently is 4. I'd say hear what Phelan has to say about your secondary role.  But I'd wager a secondary leader won't go amiss.

@Everyone:  Craig illuminated some things I've missed in the Char book over the months making changes and I've corrected them.  All mentions of advantage (that isn't combat advantage) has so far been removed (which I could find) and replaced with the usual bonuses and penalties (+2 and -2).

Feat Emulation:  Got a small rework to make it viable and useful but limit it as well.

And yes Kaetyma may make use of dragon breath feats usually restricted to the Dragon born in 4e.  I simply haven't added them all to this book yet.  As I only looked at the PHB for feats.  So any additional suggestions for feats are welcome!

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

@Author

Thank you :)

So, as I read the changes, making use of all you've got is now gone entirely, being rolled up into the pluraton description instead.  It also reads as though Pluratons can now use two racial encounter powers per combat.  If so, that is pretty big and completely accounts for the relative weakness of easing their pain and psychic parasite. It may even be overpowered, especially combined with emulation.

What happens if a singleton takes Emulation, or is it specifically Pluraton only?  If you don't have an answer to that, I'd suggest making it Pluraton only.

If an Umbrean took Dragon Breath from Emulation, would they then also be able to access the Dragon Breath feats?

For that matter can an Umbrean even Emulate a power that needs a decision to be made 'at character creation'?  If they can, must the Umbrean emulate it at character creation or could they still pick it up later?

@Sardis I don't think it really matters whether you go leader or striker.  Just decide which you'd rather do - deal damage or enable others to do so.  There is a nice rule in 4E that lets you make 1 power/feat/skill change to your character every time you level up, in case you don't like the decision you made.  So you could adjust on the fly.  Though I suspect you'll still be restricted somewhat by your covenant and attribute choices.

As for the group, I feel we have some decent single target damage, but might lack AoE.  Willa has two Encounter powers, but one of those is relatively expensive to use (normally requiring her to expend both the power itself and an encounter utility power).  I feel that she also lacks the hitting power of other warlocks, since I've been prioritising her hit chance for reliability over everything else (I hate missing almost* more than anything else).

Otherwise, there's rarely a fight when someone does not fall unconscious or at least take a beating so anything you can do to help our front-liners would be nice.  Especially, if it potentially frees up Phelan to make more use of his thoroughly awesome 'Magic Weapon' at will.

*Loss of character control is the actual worst :P

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

Seems good.  You'll have a nice base for skills with a rounded attribute distribution.  Plus, you still have any racial bonuses to add, as well as the 2 points gained at level 4.

Just to repeat what Phelan said before:  Dex doesn't affect AC or Reflex defences whilst you have a higher Intellect.  It will still buff skills and initiative though.

If you are interested in having a character with a decent base for skills, the Feat 'Jack of all trades' is available to characters with high Intellect and buffs all untrained skills by 2.  Willa has it because she always seems to do badly in the skill tests.

On the subject of feats, at level 4 you should have 3.  Unless you are one of the races that can provide a 4th (Ehuron or Human, I think).

I would recommend taking an expertise for the implement you are planning to use.  It will add +1 to hit per Tier with powers used through that implement.  There are a number available and usually come with an additional benefit too.

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

Ah, there is something potentially very important that I have been forgetting about!  So there is something else that your attributes do that is kind of an 'under the hood' thing.  They determine what feats you have access too.  Unfortunately, I do not know every single feat in the game let alone their requirements or what would be good for the invoker.  Luckily, someone has already done all the legwork:

http://www.enworld.org/forum/s...-Invokers-(By-Cazzeo)

I think such a guide has been written for every class and they can be really helpful.  Generally, I find everything they say to be common sense and they lean heavily towards min-maxing, but it is always nice to have second opinion.

There are some sample builds on the second page, though the stats have already been adjusted for racial bonuses.

Sorry for not thinking about all this before.

Otherwise, I think your attribute distribution looks nice.

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

@Iron Jubei

Gonna test your memory a bit here.  I've been re-reading some of our adventures (which I do from time to time, mostly because its so easy to forget details over an extended period of time) and I got to the point in the Weyr when we entered the tower and Willa registered you all.  At that time you were investigating the concentric circles on the floor and reading the draconic script there.

Unusually our illustrious author replied to you with a post that we could all see (though I guess there may have been other stuff that he pm'd to you).  As you never relayed the information to us by an IC post, I was wondering if you took the author's post to be to all of us (i.e. you effectively relaying the information you found) or if you forgot to tell us (unintentionally or otherwise).

Thanks!

For information, the post in question is

quote:
The dais held three concentric circles within so rather than just one teleportation circle this was a nested circle connecting to at least four other locations.  Almost all the draconic script were arcane formulas Jubei could not make any sense of.  Though each circle held a large, easily recognizable name.  The first, the largest circle, was for name so old in the draconic tongue as to be almost unrecognizable.  It was one of the names of a legendary dragon queen Lahdunshul.  The greatest and most common tale of her was of taming the serpents which swam the great rivers amongst the stars and commanded them to build her a great palace upon the moon.  A palace so vast that it could house all of dragonkind and their servants to spare.

The second and third names Jubei recognized belonging to other weyrs found among the Crystal Isles.  Both twere ruins and had been looted over the millenia.

The fourth name was simply Lower Chambers.

The reliefs was of battle between two great armies.  Dragons, doola tywuar and kaetyma all fought across two lands split by a sea.  At the back of one army towered the figure of Malus.  A fierce, muscular ulh with tooth like, twisted horns crowing his head.  His expression was a happy snarl as he pointed a vicious looking waraxe over the army before him toward what you’d guess is the opposing army.  His other arm held a spiked mace.

The figure behind the other army was that of Alyssia, a spindly, almost ethereal looking Ehuron.  She carried only a staff.  Her head was the sun illuminating the battlefield.  The rays grazing her size of the relief before clashing against the smoky darkness that spread from out from Malus’s mane.

If this represented a specific battle Jubei wasn’t sure, though it wouldn’t be odd for it to just be another representation of the ceaseless wars between those two physical gods.

On closer examination Jubei found the entire relief was engraved with draconic script.  No, the relief was made up by the script.  The writing itself was a list of names.  As the realization grew Jubei realized there were millions of names recorded upon that wall.

I only ask because it seems that Lahdunshul's moonbase fell beneath our radar a bit.  At least it did mine and I don't remember it being mentioned again since.  It seems to me that this is could either be an explanation for what happened to the dragons (they simply relocated) or, more likely, it is the 'citadel in the sky' where the Tyrant King is imprisoned.  Perhaps both.

On another note, when we were trying to decide how to enter they Weyr, your Gods granted you a vision that you thought showed Phelan using his teleportation device to get us inside.  You asked if his device had an extending blade.  However Phelan said it had nothing of the sort and was impossible for it to bypass the Weyr's wards.  I'm thinking now that the vision was either trying to show you the safest way to get to the Tyrant King's prison (not inside the Weyr) and that was was using the teleportation circle in the tower (in effect what you thought was a blade extending from Phelan's device was actually a symbol representing the tower) or it was telling you that Phelan's device was a key to operate the teleportation circle there and give us access to the Tyrant King.  Again perhaps both.

I dunno - I'm probably overthinking things, but the reference to Lahdunshul building a place on the moon to house all dragons seems very important to me, for us to have never discussed it.

No spoilers, but Craig, in some respects you are correct.  There is a great deal of detail embedded into those descriptions that all tie into things you have, are, and will see.  I've had a very long time to compose the elements of these stories so every detail is often well thought out months in advance.

So if anyone else wants to ask the spirit something. Please do so. If not Drex will release the spirit in my next post. I don't think we should keep it here any longer. I don't want to cause any more hare to it. (and cause it to have a reason for violent outburst of rage towards our party)

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

So quick mind refresh, just to get my thoughts in the right direction:

1. We are going to the main crystal tower.

2. We need to find the corruption and stop it.
2.1. We are assuming the corruption is not the Nemesis and something different, right?

3. We are also trying to find something or learn about something that Jubei seen in a vision, which might also be in the main tower. But might not be.

4. Find out what happened to Willa's people. Possibly something to do with the corruption that is now present.

Did I miss something.

BTW, if you've been wondering where Max has been for over the past week, he was partially in hospital due to appendicitis.  He's alright now (as of the time of writing) but with a rather scathing opinion of the German healthcare system (in Berlin anyway).

Okay lads, after this whole thing I intend to "buy" a preservation shield, which is a level 2 magic item, which means that at our level it costs only 1 token. Given that we have a big number of fortune ones, I'd spend one of those to get it.
That will allow me to pop a daily once that gives all of us (well everyone within 5 squares of the big boy) 19 temporary hitpoints.

Everyone okay with that?

I went looking for a better shield because I thought, there must be something better out there.  But shields apparently are quite lacklutstre :(

So go for it.

From what I understood of the description of the shield though, its not your total healing surges, its the number of surges you have left?  And with Phelan constantly draining you, it may or may not be that useful?

Well getting anywhere from 15 to 19 temporary hitpoints is still pretty good. Even 10 can make a big difference \o/ So booouuuught it be. Just gotta figure out a spot where it magically pops into existence.

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

I have just been checking the last few xp entries in the Campaign Book to make sure it was up to do date.  It does seem to be, so thanks very much for whoever has been doing that (I assume it was our illustrious Author).

I did however notice something a little strange:

Last 4 XP entries tallied in the Campaign Book: 80+35+250+175

Last 4 xp amounts awarded as far as I could see:

29 April 2018: 80xp
10 May 2018:   35xp
17 July 2018:  250xp
4 August 2019: 175xp

These match up fine, however there was a post on 4 April 2019, that said:

Author:
[I'll open my Jocker Brand popcorn and watch the show.*crounch*munch*munch* I'll hand out XP next post.]

I've been unable to locate the follow up xp mentioned.  Not that I mind, but I thought I'd
inquire about it.  For reference, the post is on Page 6 of the current Chapter.

Oh! Right, I plumb forgot.  I was quest xp you should have gotten.  I'll add it as a correction to this evening's post.

Addendum:  After checking my notes I noticed I gave you that XP for the Dinner Encounter, so uh again correction incoming but expect Tiny xp reward because I gave the wrong value for the Dinner.  What you got should have been for the Quest for defeating the dungeon.  The reward for making it through the dinner was the same but split.  (i.e. 1050/6= 175, vs 175/6= 29)

So you'll be getting the reward for the dinner now actual.  Which is 29 xp for the group.

Volon appears to be leaving Amare in the umbreans care.  Should you ask about it Eldos mentions that Volon made arrangements to keep the statue safe.

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

Hi everyone?

Would anyone object to me claiming 6 fortune tokens?

I'd like to get a floating lantern (2 tokens) and upgrade my rod implement (4 tokens).

If not np.  4 tokens is a lot to spend on a single item and the lantern, which might not ever be useful, will reduce in cost to 1 token when next we level.

Either way - thanks ^^
