OOC - General Chat 03

As far as I am aware effects like a pact boon are free actions on their triggers.

Depends on the pact boon. However Fate of the Void is a Free Action on its trigger. Actually they all seem to be free actions except for Elemental Pact (it's an Immediate Reaction)

OOC - General Chat 03

Could someone link me the source document (or tell me where to find it) listing which pact triggers are free actions?  I have access to both the compendium and the character builder and neither state that Fate of the Void requires anything from the character to trigger.  Only the Darkspiral Aura retributive effect (immediate Interrupt) and the elemental pact (immediate reaction).  Here is the exact phrasing from the compendium for Star Pact:

When an enemy under your Warlock’s Curse is reduced to 0 hit points or fewer, you gain a +1 bonus to any single d20 roll you make before the end of your next turn (attack roll, saving throw, skill check, or ability check). If you don’t use this bonus by the end of your turn, it is lost.
This bonus is cumulative; if three cursed enemies drop to 0 hit points or fewer before your next turn, you gain a +3 bonus to a d20 roll during your turn.

Here is the description of Eldritch Pact:

You have forged a pact with mysterious entities that grant you your arcane powers. Choose one pact. The pacts presented in the Player’s Handbook are the fey pact, the infernal pact, and the star pact. Other products present additional pacts. The pact you choose determines the following warlock abilities:
At-Will Spells: Your pact determines one of the at-will spells you know.
Pact Boon: Each pact includes a pact boon. The pact boon is a granted power you can use to further hex your enemies.
The pact you take also provides bonuses to certain warlock powers. Individual powers detail the effects (if any) your Eldritch Pact selection has on them.

And here is the entry for free actions:

Free actions take almost no time or effort. A creature can usually take as many free actions as it wants during any turn, including other creatures’ turns. Examples: Speaking a few sentences, dropping a held item, letting go of a grabbed creature.
There is an exception to this rule: A creature can take a free action to use an attack power only once per turn. Creatures don’t normally have attack powers that can be used as free actions, but some powers and other effects grant the ability to use an attack power (usually a basic attack) as a free action. For instance, a character might have two different abilities that let him or her make a melee basic attack as a free action when their respective triggers occur. If both abilities are triggered on the same turn, the character can make only one of the melee basic attacks during that turn. This limitation does not apply to free actions that a creature is forced to take by an enemy.
In certain circumstances, the DM might decide to limit the use of free actions further. For instance, if an adventurer has already used free actions during a particular turn to talk, drop things, and use a class feature, the DM might rule that the adventurer can use no more free actions during that turn.

Action Description
Delay Put off a turn until later in the initiative order
Drop held items Drop any items currently held
End a grab Let go of an enemy
Spend an action point Spend an action point to take an extra action (once per encounter, not in a surprise round)
Talk Speak a few sentences

To me, it sounds like the Pact Boon triggers whether I want it to or not.  That could be important in certain situations, like if I am unconscious, stunned, petrified or what have you.

Of course, if we cannot find the source information to say it is a free action, but we believe that it is 'rules as intended' or we just want to make that call, that's fine too :)

EDIT: Just noticed that the Fey Pact "Misty Step" specifically states that it is a Free Action.  The others do not.

I'm currently using the compendium app on my phone. Take a look at the warlock class entry as it may be in there, alternatively if you're using the character builder, go into sheet mode (the one that allows you to go through pages, and will include all the powers, including class/race ones). You should find the pact boon there. Either way,t hey should show up as at-wills and explain the trigger and action, as per usual power format.

I cannot find it in the compendium or many of the feature's descriptions in the character builder, but you're right.  It does appear at least once as a free action power card there.  Thanks :)

I suspect that may just be because the character builder is incapable of showing a 'power card' without an action type.  I feel that if it was meant to be a free action it would be highlighted in other descriptions of the class feature too as not everyone has access to the character builder  (I spent 2 hours this morning trawling the web for sources where it may have been listed as such and not found any).  However, I have also not found anything stating that it is not a free action either.

So yup - thanks :)

Actually the character builder does this regularly. Remember that not all powers are represented in it (like all the leader token healing powers) outside of going into sheet mode and going to the right page.  I admit I haven't checked the compendium on the browser side, but on the mobile app, the Warlock entry lists the pact boons and their actions (except for Sorcerer King).

Glad to help. :) Just glad I got the DDI stuff working again!

@Willa: I see you haven't placed yourself on the combat map yet, are you having problems?

Also just to note I'll be authoring Ceba's for a few rounds as his player is currently recovering from a trip to the hospital.

@Willa: Oh it's fine.  Just mention that next time, ok?  If everyone waits on someone else then nothing happens. As for Willa's check, sometimes we try things and they work, sometimes they don't.  Though that doesn't mean it won't work in the future.  Remember that.

I did :) I rolled initiative before Phelan had been put onto the map and I said then that she'd be between him and the enemies.

I won't able to gen the next round today because I'll be running a Star Trek game tonight over on roll20 so the enemy turn and start of next round will have to wait until tommorrow once Craig has posted.

All done.  Sorry for the delay.  Phelan - I think you need to roll Amare's Saving Throw vs the Daze condition.  Also can you use a free action at the same time as another action when you're dazed?  I find the condition's description a little ambiguous.  Thanks, :)

Willa, don't forget the bonuses from Magic Weapon.

Also I've rolled the save since I forgot to. Made it.

And Dazed does not interfere with free actions.

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

If you all are wondering why there is so much commotion on the Combat Map, its because these guys have alot of shifting movement powers.  So they can basically rearrange themselves quite effectively when the situation demands it and they have very dangerous tactical behaviour.

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

@Author: Thank you for updating Willa's dazed condition.  I had forgotten it.

EDIT: So attacking from invisibility normally provides combat advantage (+2 to attack rolls).  Under the House Rules, I think that means I have 5E Advantage (roll twice on attacks and take the highest?) for Willa's attack.  I have recorded each roll separately in case I am wrong about that, in which case just add +2 to the first roll made against each enemy.

Willa: Yeah that house rule applies until you reach level 4.  I've had some discussion with Max on the subject and we've come to the decision to scrap it once you reach level 4.

Re: OOC - General Chat 03

I think my next turn is going to be extremely complicated.  Unless anyone has any better ideas, this is what I am thinking:

Minor Action: Curse Sword Auto 1
Standard Action: Dire Radiance (2 chances to hit at +9 to hit.  Hopefully I can make a 19 with that)
THEN IF:

1) I hit and Sword Auto 1 survives.  Change my move action to a minor one and use my helm to determine its remaining hp.  Depending on what's left either Action Point to hit it with my daily or let someone else try to finish it off.  If left to someone else Daily sword 2 as below.

2) I hit and Sword Auto 1 dies.  Trigger my pact boon through my rod, spreading my curse to all enemies within 5 squares of Sword Auto 1, then AP and daily sword auto 2.

i) If sword auto 2 is hit and bloodied, change my move action to a minor action and use 'Taking Advantage' racial to end its aura.

ii) If sword auto 2 is hit and not bloodied, or not hit at all, move to maintain my Shadow Walk ability

4) I miss Sword Auto 1.  Action Point and attempt to Daily it.  If it dies, trigger pact boon to spread curse to all enemies within 5 squares, then move to maintain Shadow Walk.

@Author - the presentation of this may get messy, sorry.

Yeah, it'll be a very long post with a lot of different possibilities and you'll have to figure out which one applies :/  I'll help however I can.  Hoping someone has a better plan though so it wont be necessary.
