Re: Merry Christmas (Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, &c.), Everyone!

Some questions:
  1. What time is it? I thought it was close to sundown when the crew released the divers to walk back to land. Should we assume that the night passed and the gear was inventoried the next day?
  2. Can a steamjack actually use a weapon? Can the umbrian war axe (or other large weapon) be placed in the 'jack's hand and used? Maybe the pneumatic fist can be modified to use the axe instead of just punching out. My understanding is that there's a socket that allows the pneumatic fist and a regular hand to be switched out, given time. So can the axe be placed in the 'normal' hand and the 'jack trained to use it? Would the axe or the hand need to be modified? It's a two handed weapon, maybe both hands need to be synchronized so the weapon can be used. Or maybe it can't be done.

Re: Merry Christmas (Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, &c.), Everyone!

Yes, it was close to sunset by the time the two ships closed to within combat/boarding range. By the time the battle was over, the sun was sitting on the horizon, quickly setting. There was still sufficient light to sort through the loot.

As for a steamjack using a weapon, I couldn't find anything that specifically deals with it, but this is the way I interpret what I did find. If a steamjack has fingers/hand, it is nimble enough to hold a cup or a writing quill, but that nimbleness came with a cost--not much strength. This is a development problem, not a design problem. Whether the two could be accomplished simultaneously is still being debated. When mechanical hands were being developed, it was a conscious decision to make them nimble rather than develop a strong hand.

So a steamjack can use small mechancial tools without a problem. Most large tools are power tools; otherwise what's the point? In those cases, the tool has to replace the hand to get wired into the jack.

In the case of a mundane weapon, a hand with fingers can wield it. However, if it wants to apply its Strength bonus to damage, there is a 20% chance that the hand will be damaged from the effort/impact, in which case it'll be useless until repaired. Wielding a weapon with two hands will halve that chance, but wielding a two-handed weapon with just one hand will double that chance.

Re: Merry Christmas (Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, &c.), Everyone!

OK, I found where warjack weapons are large of huge in size. And I found prices for a weapon mount...the lower part of the arm is replaced for melee weapons. Rrger has a labor jack and not a war jack but still the weapon mount makes sense. So would the character need to build/acquire a large weapon, then build a mount to hold that weapon, then install the mount on the 'jack and finally teach the jack to use the weapon?
Or he could hold out for parts to make a warjack.

Re: Merry Christmas (Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, &c.), Everyone!

It depends on the weapon. Swords and maces and such would need a standard weapon mount. Something like a staff or many polearms have special or multiple attack modes. In that case, you'd need a special mount that you'd have to build.

*Grins* Between you and me (Rrger and Bosh) we could melt all that weaponry into metal and MAKE your own weapon. me working the metal (Craft Mechanicks: +10 / +11.5 metal mechanica stuff) - Dont have caloused hands, so I still need a hammer (My maul would do the trick I guess) - Now an Anvil and a forge, though I suppose the ships engine room/coal furnace should do the trick

Re: Merry Christmas (Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, &c.), Everyone!

I think I'll have Rrger modify the 'jack with an arm mount so he can interchange arms. It'll save time if he makes a weapon mount but still won't be fast enough to switch out during a fight. I've got a high mechanica skill as well so we might be able to make a large weapon for it. I need to train it to fight, along with the two clockworks. Maybe I should look at the idea of upgrading ac or str. How hard would it be to make a large mechanoflail? I need to look that up maybe.

Re: Merry Christmas (Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, &c.), Everyone!

Dany also has Craft (Mechanika), though only at +6 - but, that should be good enough to potential aid someone, if necessary.  Still, it sounds as though Rrger and Bosh can completely handle themselves in that arena.

Completely tangentially, what is an "Elven Thin Blade" (from the mundane weapons pile)?  I don't see any reference to it in the IK Character Guide, but I might have just missed it.  Or is it in one of the supplements?  What are the stats on it?

See ya Bosh!

And Dany, I looked up elven thinblade 3.5, here's what I found:

http://www.imarvintpa.com/dndl...ource.php?Sources=CW

It's an exotic weapon, about like a longsword with higher critical threat range.

Re: Merry Christmas (Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, &c.), Everyone!

Thank guys, the Elven lightblade is interesting, though it is lighter than a rapier with the same damage and critcal threat range/multiplier.  The required exotic proficiency feat is daunting at the moment (perhaps one day) - presuming that is what the DM meant.  Weight is not an issue with Dany yet (thank Morrow for Handy Haversacks...:D).

Have a great holiday, Bosh (as well as everyone else); I should be around, but the holidays are a hectic time...

Happy New Year!

As near as I can tell, the Elvin lightblade and the Elvin thinblade were someone's attempt to give Elves the equivalent of a samurai's daisho--wakizashi and katana. The lightblade is equivalent to a wakizashi or short sword, but is not curved and can be wielded like a rapier. The thinblade is the katana or long sword, but, again, not curved and can be wielded as a rapier.

So, normally, for anyone not an Elf, using either would require the Exotic Weapon Proficiency to not incur penalties. However, an Elf would treat both of them as just a martial weapon.

On the other hand, any character that has Weapon Finesse (rapier) can wield either weapon without any penalties.

So, no, neither weapon is in the Iron Kingdoms core rule book, but then again, it was based on 3rd Edition, while this information comes from 3.5 Edition.

Lightblade: 1d4/1d6 18-20/x2  1 lb.
Thinblade:  1d6/1d8 18-20/x2  3 lbs.

Interesting, you learn something new everyday!  I will revise Danyka's post appropriately - I guess that she is interested in potentially using the thinblade then ... as she appears to have the ability/proficiency to do so...

RL has been crunching me this past week... still trying to figure out the next encounter. Pirate ship? Sea monster? Typhoon? Tax collector?

Geezz... even on Immoren (or in the land of Zu) we can't get away from Death and Taxes...:D

Hope that RL clears up for you, GM...

Alas, I never know from one week to the next what's going to happen. Not in control of my life at this point. Just needed a small window of time to work on the next part of the adventure. Almost there.

Don't worry, though. Death is on vacation and the tax collectors have always been afraid of the sea.

Re: Show Some Grit, Perhaps?

GM StarMaster:
Spell-casters can spend Grit Points to spontaneously evoke the metamagic feat Targeted Spell which allows you to convert a self-only spell to a touch spell. It costs +1 spell slot, but you can also then use a Grit Point to cover that increase.

Hmmm... If Danyka had a lot of Grit Points to burn (which, unfortunately, she doesn't at this point), that might be a viable option (Rrger?  Perhaps or another caster?).

It would cost her at least 2 Grit each time - since she cannot cast 2nd level spells yet (either as an Adept or Gun Mage) and would have to bump the spell range to touch/targetted....

How close are we to levelling (and getting more Grit Points)?!? ... :D

Re: Show Some Grit, Perhaps?

I was just thinking about level progression the other day. I run several games, and I have a tendency to get the level progressions a bit mixed up.

You were supposed to progress a level after the last battle.

So, by all means, level up!

Re: Show Some Grit, Perhaps?

Rrger started with 6 grit points. Since you get a point for each killing blow I think he's gained as many as he's spent. He can memorize the spell 3 times, use 2 grit points with each casting to make it ranged and to save his second level spell (at third level he can only cast one). That would give you about 90 minutes to figure out what we can learn from these things. It would probably take an hour or so to study and replace all three of those spells (he can't replace the one he already cast). Do we want to do that? I can have him start studying now, or we can wait until the next day.

Edit: we were writing at the same time...we get a new feat, right? so I can take weapon proficiency for guns?

Not sure about arcane mechnaniks or bodyguards, but gun mages don't get a bonus feat at level 4, as far as I am aware.  At Level 4, characters usually get +1 to an ability score...
