Re: OOC : Relaxation room

Assuming English is your primary language as is most likely for USAF personnel, but surely not mandatory, and you have a 12 or higher Intelligence Spanish at a native level of skill would be free, and each language learned academically from Afghanistan would be either 1 or 2 skill ranks for fluent or native skill levels.

With a 14 or higher INT score you could pick one or more of the languages from Afghanistan to fill additional free language slots even though they were technically picked up as an adult, each of which would have a native skill level just like English or Spanish.

Re: OOC : Relaxation room

What languages you gain are clearly explained on page 140:

One homeworld language at a native level, the one you are raised with, per species or nationality (English for most of you, Polish for Kaspar, Norse for Hilda, etc.)

All SGC recruits who weren't raised speaking English (say Kaspar, Hilda, and Vasandra), gain English for free at a fluent level. The book says "most SGC recruits are American, and therefore all who do not speak English as a native gain English as a fluent language for free."

A number of bonus languages equal to your Intelligence bonus. It says the "bonus native languages may be either homeworld or alien languages". Hence, Hilda learned Goa'uld, even though it's not a homeworld language.

"Native" languages are those you speak sounding like a native, more or less. "Fluent" languages are those you can speak confidently, but with an accent or unnatural sentence structures or word choices. "Homeworld" languages are those spoken on your homeworld, and are handled by the Languages skill. "Alien" or "Xeno" languages are those spoken off your world, and are handled by the Xeno-Languages skill.

Re: OOC : Relaxation room

My apologies to everyone for getting the languages all screwed up. I think it's all straightened out now.

They could have made it far less confusing if they'd just put all the little rules in one place. Also, it would have helped if they said that your languages are those you wind up with AFTER you join SGC and not what you bring to it. It just made no sense that someone from, say, Portugal would be able to speak Goa'uld.

Anyway, The Keeper should launch the first mission tomorrow (Tuesday), and I'll launch SG-X2 on Wednesday and SG-X3 on Thursday.

Re: OOC : Relaxation room

Here's another question for everyone.

Should the missions be readable by everyone, or should only those on the mission be able to read it?

In reply to StarMaster (msg # 74):

I would say only by those on them.  Perhaps a thread could be made, however, for after action reports, summaries.  THose are implied to be available to all of the SG teams in the series.

Re: OOC : Relaxation room

I would say... Everyone.   Hear me out.   Hiding things from your fellows may be 'fun' in a face-to-face game, but in a PbP you lose track of activity and the game will seem to slow.  Also, you are assuming folk can't keep separate OOC and IC - effectively treating them like children.  I've always been a fan of trusting players with 'open secrets' as reading other story lines is fun... just clearly mark them each story thread with the SG team involved... (E.G.  SG1 - Planetary Landing... or SG2/SG3 - Mission to P39453)  If folk don't want to know or don't have time, they can just stick to their own threads.  The con is, of course, if someone does slip up they will need to be reminded (something I suggest we call keep an eye on and do gently via pm!)  We are, after all, human :-)

Re: OOC : Relaxation room

I'd like the mission threads to be viewable. I like to see what everyone else is up to, and it's fun to see how we might handle things differently. In most cases, I doubt it would affect our own missions, and if we work together it would make sense for us to know what each other is doing. I doubt we'd be working against each other, where secrecy might be an issue.

English is the Common tongue of the Stargate system. :) (Common being the common language of D&D.)

The system's actually pretty generous with languages. It would have to be, based on the Stargate movie and early season where languages were an issue. You can gain free ones with successful Language/Xeno-Language checks.

I suspect putting three or more points in a language makes you an expert: a natural accent, knowledge of all the grammar and linguistics, quality writing.

Re: OOC : Relaxation room

How do the new players feel ? I have been so busy the past days that I have not be able to read everything. I hope you integration in the group goes well. I'm rely upon StarMaster to manage everything while I'm a bit away.

I have some free time today so I will work with SG-X1 as it's the team I will master.

I'm good.  I've not got the SG RPG so I'll be able to tweak/tailor my character mechanically to fit the concept I have already got sent in mind :-)  Looking forward to some RP!

Re: OOC : Relaxation room

Yeah, life is going well... lots of hurry up and wait which seems appropriate after all.

We'll have to set some ground rules for the military folks about when/where folks need to come to attention for offcers and whatnot, but I think SGC is rather relaxed for that (unless the general comes in of course) so that should work itself out.

Re: OOC : Relaxation room

I think we can leave all the missions visible to others and just assume that they constitute highly detailed mission reports and the general chatter among the troops who return from missions.

Obviously information wont jump to different teems until they all return to the SGC but given the series's trend to transfer knowledge in a fairly high detail level through the various characters who have 'read all the mission reports' I see no reason not to do so ourselves.

Re: OOC : Relaxation room

I'd rather have them viewable by everyone, for many of the reasons Sarah has mentioned.  (Especially for preventing the feeling that nothing is happening, which is one reason I don't participate in play by post more often-- games move slow and people drift away.  Reading what others are doing can help to prevent that.)

Re: OOC : Relaxation room

My own feeling is that everyone should be able to read all the posts. I don't know that this works for all pbp games, but it certainly seems to fit this one.

And the 'secrecy' aspect isn't about treating people like children (though the mixing of OOC and IC can be part of that), it's about generating suspense. It all depends on the players, of course. I figured this group would want to be able to read everything, but I thought we should ask.

Re: OOC : Relaxation room

I'm inclined to agree with Vassandra, that we should be able to see past briefings and the missions themselves since that creates an idea of an After Action Report that the team would need to fill out afterwards anyway.

Re: OOC : Relaxation room

On base all the firearms are kept in the armory.  Blades are a little bit less tightly controlled as there are a few scenes where someone randomly unsheathes a knife of one sort or another, mostly folding.

It doesn't help that everyone is up in the middle of the night looking for snacks...  Once we're assigned to teams it will be nice to have a team ready room to hang out in instead of the cafeteria.

I was just going to post about some internal Wizard of Oz thoughts in the briefing, but then wasn't sure if it was considered PC knowledge or not. I know as a player I have it.
