As the team slowly filtered into the gate room, they saw a FRED sitting there waiting for them. There were also half a dozen armed guards... standard operating procedure for a new adventure into the unknown.

Not having any other stops to make Vasandra heads directly from the armory to the Gate Room where she does a personal inspection of the FRED and it's listed inventory items even before accepting the short range remote from the nearby airman and running the not so little wheeled drone through it's paces to ensure functionality.

As this process takes several minutes, very likely all but the last few before the gate dialing process begins, it is highly likely that she will still be engaged in what amounts to her specialty when the other members of the team arrive.

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

Feeling almost over-burdened, Gavin entered the Gate Room. He looked like all the other SGC personnel, except the guards in the gate room wore combat helmets and carried a secondary sidearm.

Vasandra was already there, going over the FRED that she'd requisitioned.

"Do you really think that will be needed?" he asked her, while they waited for the last two members of the team.

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

Hilda made a strange sight as she marched into the Gate Room. She wore the standard green BDU and tactical deployment vest, with backpack or two behind her. But in place of the conventional cap, she had a conical battle helm with eyeguards that covered the top half of her face, giving her a fierce appearance, as blonde hair flowed out behind. On her left arm, she carried her wooden round shield, painted with a ring design reminiscent of a Stargate. Her Winchester 1300 shotgun (with bayonet) and FN P90 submachine gun shared places on her body with a Thracian-design composite bow, a quiver of arrows, and a big broad-bladed axe. A survival knife was strapped to one thigh, and she'd found places for throwing knives behind her shield and on her calf.

'Is that all you're bringing?' she asked with a grin. She shambled clanking over to Gavin and Vasandra and the FRED. 'Ah! A horseless cart. Good idea. I didn't expect to get so many weapons.' But nor was she upset to have so many weapons. She gratefully dumped her P90, shotgun, and backpacks in the FRED, though keeping them in easy reach.

OOC: I'll return the machete in the Forest Scout bundle, as its redundant with the axe and the environment won't require it. Plus it would be silly. :)

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

After a few moments delay the necessary process of elimination forces Vasandra to realize that Gavin's question must have been directed at her, despite her obviously busy state.  Finishing the immediate task at hand for a few more seconds she then devotes some of her attention to a reply even as Hilda's rattling passes through the door.

”I do not in fact think even a small fraction of that will be needed, however as I have no way to guess which fraction that will be, nor any interest in carrying even a small fraction of the FRED's cargo capacity I thought I would opt for the simple and effective rout, you are welcome to secure any long term supplies of your own if you like.”

Hilda's flippant toss of her gear onto the obviously very squared away transport vehicle brings something of a disproving glare from Vasandra, which softens considerably after taking in the veritable plethora of low tech items being lugged around.

”You will need to learn how to secure your gear on a FRED eventually, as we have a few minutes now I can demonstrate the process for you, but do at least try to pay attention.”.

Without leaving time for reply or rebuttal Vasandra quickly shuffles Hilda's discarded pack out from under the webbing and secures it back in place, the extra or discarded weapons however are securely stored in the locked internal cargo box.

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

'Hmm?' Hilda began, wondering what was wrong with just putting her things on the cart. So much for letting the FRED just carry her things for her. She watched closely as Vasandra fussed over her things, and supposed tying things down stopped them falling off. 'Aha. Our carts have fences around to stop things falling out.' Hilda commented with something of Vasandra's superiority, thinking she'd found a Cimmerian technological innovation that the Tau'ri lacked.

She snatched back her shotgun before it too was locked up like the P90. She wanted to keep at least one thunder-weapon to hand. 'The pee-nine-tee is a spare.'

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

After retrieving his Makarov from his quarters, Kaspar headed to Supply and grabbed his bundles. He wasn't an archaeologist, but he supposed they didn't have an anthropology bundle, though no doubt the former could be used as the latter. He didn't relish the image of digging in the dirt, though.

From there, he stopped back in the Armory to get his P90 and sign the paper that said he got his Makarov there as well.

Thus armed, he hurried down the hall, huffing and puffing as he carried/dragged all the gear the SGC had saddled him with, to the Gate Room where he found the rest of his team alread there. He looked in pleased surprise at the FRED sitting there. He had no doubt that it was intended for SG-X1. He noticed the intent expression on Vasandra's face, and guessed she'd requisitioned it. It seemed like an unnecessary extravagance to him, but now that he'd seen how much gear the SGC expected them to carry, he was glad for it.  He went over and tried his best to load his gear on the little vehicle to Vasandra's liking.

"Vell, are ve all ready to depart?" he asked, as he glanced at his G. Gerlach chronometer and saw that he was right on time.

They weren't always on a clock, but it took some time to reschedule a missed gate activation. Besides, the MALP was already on the other side waiting for them.

"Ve are right on time," he said as the gate activation sequence began. He watched the gate circle spin and the chevrons lock in place.

"Hilda ant I vill go trough first, den Vasandra vill bring trough FRED, ant Gaffin vill come trough last."

He really had no idea what the Tollan was capable of, but he did not carry the P90 as if he was comfortable with it.

'.' she agreed with Kaspar. Hilda slung her shield onto her back, along with her shotgun, and hooked the axe to her belt. In her hands, she kept her bow and an arrow, not nocked but ready to shoot back if they walked into an ambush. She stood at the base of the ramp, ready to go.

She looked up at the Stargate with awe and trepidation as it rotated and the chevrons locked into place. 'Chevron Six, encoded.' she heard. Although she'd journeyed through the Stargate before, from Cimmeria to Midgard and between Midgard and the Alpha Site for a training mission, she was still no veteran Stargate explorer, and this world was the first truly unknown one she'd been too. The photo-paintings did not tell her the smell or the feel of the wind and the earth under her feet, and did not tell her what lurked in the long grass or lay in wait over the horizon. The brave Norse warrior was not afraid to admit she was nervous, at least not to herself. She tried to calm herself, closed her eyes, and recited some impromptu verse. 'Now, here we are, fresh warriors all, / Into the Ring of Stars to fall, / To go a-viking along Yggdrasil, / to a world dangling like an apple.' Maybe it was better in her native Cimmerian Norse.

Then the Ring of Stars activated and the vortex surged out over her head, rustling her golden hair. It collapsed back into the event horizon, rippling and bubbling as the Well of Urðr, the well of fate. Hilda slapped her bow against her shield, once, twice, thrice, building up courage. Then, with a wild shout, she ran up the ramp, leaped and threw herself into the—

OOC: made a couple edits to the post abouve.

As the event horizon settled down, Kaspar adjusted the cap on his head, and then turned towards Hilda with the intent of asking if she were ready.

Before he could speak, Hilda began beating her shield and hyperventilating -- a ritual that the Anthropologist in Kaspar recognized as a Warrior's preparing to charge into battle.

Kaspar raised his hand, and was about to caution Hilda about running through the wormhole -- to remind her that sometimes the Earth Gate added a little accelerative force on the other side of the wormhole -- when she suddenly let out a wild shout and ran through the event horizon.

"Oh, dear." Kaspar said to no one in particular, as he walked up to the gate, "I do hope she doesn't hurt herself."

With only a momentary pause, Kaspar steps through...

Soren looks about the room with a look of wonder and awe on his face, so distracted that it looks like he doesn't notice anyone else in the room.

As the rest of the team filters into the Gate Room, a lieutenant meets Captain Galamore at the entrance, and explains to him about the late addition to his team in the form of Father Soren.

Not sure whether that's a good thing or not, he glances up at the Briefing Room window and sees General Hammond nod to him.

Then Forseti walks in. That may get the Father's attention.

The intercom announces:

"Scheduled gate activation for SG-X2... commencing now."

Then the gate starts to move, and the mantra begins. "Chevron one engaged. Chevron two engaged..."

When all six chevrons have engaged, the event horizon forms in the appearance of a vertical puddle inside the gate.

A moment later, another announcement is made.

"MALP is still active. No change in the environment is noted. SG-X2 is a go!"

Being first gives her the luxury of seeing folk arrive in their various states of readiness.  Watching people has always been a hobby of hers and she enjoys their reactions (some similar to her own) as they see the gate.  She greets the new addition to the team too, though he may not have noticed that either!

Then, as everyone settled and made ready to leave, Sarah picked up her pack and allowed Travis to help tighten, losen or otherwise the straps to help them sit better.  His knowledge and experience with the comfort necessary for the female anatomy aside, she thanks him for his efforts and makes ready to head through the gate - following the others of course.

Michael was already a bit concerned about the team... his team, but not because he doubted any of them. Smarter and wiser men than he had selected the team. His concern was their ability to function as a unit, and even he wasn't sure what that meant. They'd get along with other, he was sure of that. But when it came to action, one might zig when another might zag.

At first, he was a trifle annoyed at being stuck with a last minute addition, but when he found out who it was, he was... baffled. He just had no idea how the Father would fit into the unit. Or what he'd do. Pray for them all?

"Okay then," Michael addressed his team. "Everyone ready to go? Good. Travis and I will go through first... just in case. Sarah and Forseti, give us a ten count and then follow. Blaine and Father Masters, please bring up the rear. Move off to the side once you are through."

He moved up the ramp, made sure Travis was beside him, and then stepped through.

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

As SG-X3 gathers in the Gate Room, alarms klaxons sound as the gate begins to activate.

"Unscheduled gate activity!" is the announcement, followed by, "Incoming wormhole!" Everyone goes to high alert status. Half a dozen fully armed men quickly rush into the Gate Room, weapons drawn, and take up defensive stances and positions.

The gate completes its dialing and the funnel of the wormhole effect swooshes out into the room. As it settles back into the 'sheet of water' effect of the even horizon, the speakers make another annoucement.

"It's SG-7... returning from P2X-416!"

"Open the iris!" General Hammond directs, while a simultaneous 'all clear' signal is broadcast to SG-7.

A moment later, SG-7 steps out of the wormhole.

As soon as the last of the six-man team steps out of the wormhole, the gate 'closes', followed by the iris closing.

"SG-5, stand down," Hammond announces. The armed men shoulder their weapons and file back out of the room.

"Watch out for booby-traps!" Major Long, the SG-7 team commander, comments to Randall as he notices SG-X3. "The eggheads tell me that the Metreon Obelisk had a... what did you call it, Dr. Wynter?"

"A neutrino cascade," replies the female civilian on the team.

"Yeah, what she said," Long continues. "A self-destruct mechanism... the whole thing just disintegrated on us. It'll sound better in the report."

It takes a few minutes for everyone's nerves to settle back down and the stargate routine to return to normal.

"Commencing dialing sequence for P5P-82Z."

Once again the stargate's inner circle spins and the routine beings.

"Chevron one encoded..."

One by one, all six chevrons are locked in and encoded. When the sequence is completed, the wormhole is once again established, only this time, it's an outgoing one.

"Receiving telemetry from the MALP... status unchanged."

"SG-X3," General Hammond then announces, "you are a go."

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

When Rajip reached the Gate Room, General Hammond was waiting up in the control room.

"Are you all set, son?" the general asked Rajip through the comm system.

"Go ahead and dial P5J-249," he then directs the controller.

The gate does its rotation bit and the chevrons get locked in, and then the event horizon of the wormhole materializes within the ring.

"General Hammond to SG-X1. Do you copy, Major Gorski? We have a late arrival we would like to add to your team. If you are still within range of the gate and there are no problems, we will send him on through."

Upon getting a reply, General Hammond then announced to Rajip:

"You are cleared for departure, Sergeant. The team has moved down the road a ways, almost to the building we called a temple. You should be able to see them once through the gate. I would recommend double-timing it until you reach them."

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

Seeing the rippling surface in front of him, Rajip stood there for a while, undecisively. Had gone through that many times over already... in theory. His brief training or maybe raher 'instructing session', had not prepared him for what he was beholding at that particular moment. As he realised that in mere seconds he was to be disintegrated only to be put back together, piece by piece - somewhere, he couldn't even say where exactly - he felt ice building up in his spine.

He looked back at the transparent viewport behind which the general was observing him. However, his silent prayer never came - there was no calling off of his departure.

Slowly, hesitantly, he moved the his P90 forward, touching the unreal surface, feeling that he was about to make a move in the direction, where thare was no going back from. His legs were trembling slightly as he took a step forward.

OOC: And off we go. I'll post in the Oz thread after the team's leader would have had reacted to Hammond's calling. Or before, if it's already tomorrow evening.

As Michael stepped inside the SGC, he walked in direction of General Hammond. "The mission is suspended for the moment general. The security of my team could have been compromised." he said to the general.

"I will be waiting you and your team in the briefing room in 2 hours for a debriefing Captain. Go to the infirmary for a check-up." answered Hammond.

Michael acknowledge the order and asked his team to head for the infirmary. Then, he caught up with Sarah and ask politely. "Sarah, can we speak a few minutes please. I think I have to apologize to you for my behaviour during the meeting with Marduk."

Sarah waited for Michael to speak, showing him that he could continue. "As you know, this is my first time as a SG team leader and I think I have been a bit nervous about this. This is no excuse, I know. My behaviour during the meeting is unforgivable and I should have had more faith in you at this moment."

Michael paused a moment, looked back in the direction of the Stargate for a second and looked at Sarah again before speaking again. "I really appreciate your work in the team so far and I would like to count you in my team for the future. I hope that you will forgive me and that we will be able to start on a fresh new basis. Your speech in front of the Stargate was right. I don't have to ask you for update every time and I will have to rely on your skills. After all, I would not be a good team leader if I could not trust you and let you do your job without interference."

Sarah was still quiet, listening patiently to Michael's monologue when he came to an end. "If you accept, I would like to offer you a drink during our next leave. This could allow us to know each other better and you could consider this as a excuse present."

Fox did not spot any fields of any kind, certainly not any that smacked of agriculture. The wide swath of grassy land where the dinosaurs ran didn't quite seem to qualify as a field even if he didn't know what else to call it. None of the vegetation was recognizable, either, so he couldn't say whether all the houses had rooftop gardens, be they vegetable, herbs, flower or just decorative.

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

With the day's mission announcements echoing in everyone's brains, it quickly became time for SG-X2's new mission.

T+  07:00  scheduled outbound (non-SGC) travellers to P3X-888
T+  08:30  MALP expedition embarks to P89-534
T+  08:15  SG-2  scheduled mission status report from P3X-116
T+  09:00  establish 2nd wormhole with X6X-215
T+  09:30  SG-6  embarks on mission to P89-534
T+  10:00  SG-8  scheduled mission status report from P5C-982
T+  10:15  SG-2  scheduled mission status report from P3X-116
T+  11:00  MALP expedition embarks to XB4-81N
T+  11:30  SG-6  scheduled mission status report from P89-534
T+  11:45  establish 3rd wormhole with X6X-215
T+  12:15  SG-X2 scheduled mission to XB4-81N

The gate address was dialed up, the gate rotated until all 7 chevrons were locked, and the wormhole's flush pulsed outward only to drop back a moment later into the almost-familiar event horizon.

"Receiving MALP telemetry," Sgt. Wyler announced, then a moment later added, "Status unchanged. SG-X2, you are a Go."

Gavin was the last to come through the gate, and even though he was Tollan, he was not so comfortable with gate travel that he didn't use it with some trepidation. Gate travel had been safe for thousands of years... until the Tau'ri got ahold of them them... abused them... and more or less unintentionally tampered with them.

So Gavin carefully looked around... first for his teammates and then to confirm that he was definitely in the SGC.

The General's comment and questions further made him wonder if this was the same place they came from.

"I don't think it was anything we did, sir," Gavin answered Hammond. "You'll have to ask Carter and the eggheads, though, as to what might have caused that ripple effect."

As Kaspar had thrown himself into the Stargate, the Stargate returned the favor and threw him out...just a little bit faster than he went in, of course.  He came to a crashing halt as he slammed up against the back of the FRED.

"I think I'm too old for this shit..." Kaspar mumbled, as he slowly peeled himself off the FRED.

Hammond was already there, waiting them impatiently. "Major! What happened on Oz? We saw the gate flickering and you were not answering to my call." he asked, a bit afraid by what could have happened.

A second after, the gate stopped flickering as it closed herself.

Kaspar raised his left hand and gestured for Hammond to wait a moment, as he gathered both himself, and his wits, for an answer.

"Yah. Ven gate start flicker-flicker, vee all just run for it!" Kaspar responds, his Polish accent returned, "Dere iz no time to be radioink vat dee hell?" he shrugs.

"DHD is probably needink more repairs." again Kaspar shrugs, "Not my job. Dere iz much seismic activity on dee planet -- dere iz vun massive moon in dat sky. Or mebbe it iz double planet.  Again, I am not Astrophysicist, to be makink guesses about tidal stresses.  But!  From dee ground, dat moon looked like it vas, mebbe, habitable environment. It looked like land and water, vit clouds in dee sky."

Kaspar removed his helmet, then his P90, and laid them both on the FRED.

"And dat brings story to so-called 'temple'. Inside vee found vat vas lookink like, mebbe, it might be Ancient-built transport device -- like dee ring transporters. Dere were indications dat dee transporter vas used to go up to dee moon.  And General..." Kaspar smiled, "Dee device powered up.  Vee did not experiment to see if it was functional, but it did power up!"

Kaspar idly began searching his vest for the pocket he'd put his pipe and tobacco into, as he continued,

"Vee saw evidence uff natives -- Humans, azz far azz vee could tell -- dere is a village only a few hundred meters from dee gate.  Dee village had suffered some seismic damage several days ago, and the locals made a quick, but organized, evacuation. Vee do not tink dat dey vent tru dee gate, but vithdrew further into the bush."

Finding his tobacco pouch, but not his pipe, Kaspar shrugs and puts the pouch back.

"I vill haff more details in my official report, but dat iz dee -- how do you say? -- 'dat's dee ten-cent tour', yes?"

Left pondering the mystery of the Tau'ri egghead, and how eggs came into it, Hilda listened to Vasandra and Kaspar's reports to Earl Hammond. She supposed she'd have to write her own report of the mission later. She wondered what English words rhymed with "heroine", and, for that matter, "egghead".

'It was a successful víking, earl. Though we did not bring back riches or trade, we explored this new world, we slew great beasts, and did feats of strength to make the gods proud. And we came back alive, though Thor himself slammed his hammer Mjölnir into the world of Oz to crack the land and make the branch of Yggdrasil tremble and the water of the Ring of Stars ripple.' Yep, that was going in the report.

Here are my credentials and I'm to see a General Hammond assuming he is still in charge. she hands over the clear sheets with Asgard writing on it mostly her name and vital basic information. A personnel sheet and her orders.

"Certainly, Freyda," Walter replies to the Asgard.

He'd heard rumors that Forseti would be replaced, and he'd heard that this time, the Asgard would be assigned to SG-X1, though the numerical designation held no significance in importance.

"Yes, General Hammond is still in charge. In fact, he's in a briefing with SG-X1 right now. Please, go on up."

Walter then texted a comm message to General Hammond informing him of Freyda's arrival.

Sarah arrived through the stargate accompanied by her team though lacking their commander... and having gained a Jaffa.  Since no mention of said Jaffa has been made to the security detail (or so she believed), she fully expects their reaction to be near hostile (not that their pointing their guns up the ramp was in any way any less hostile for normal arrivals!)

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

Their arrival was fortunately less eventful than she expected and after the Jaffa and staff weapon were dealt with, Sarah made her way to decontamination and the medical suite before heading to her rooms to take a moment to collect herself and begin her report.  It would not be a pleasant one and after her second 'failed' mission, she was wondering if her time in SGC was fact worth the effort and risk.

Regardless, the report detailing the team's lack of cohesion, snap decisions, the working against each other and so forth was all detailed well into the 'night' and ready for the briefing the next day....

Once SG-X3 rallies in the gate room, Kylie explains what she was thinking about earlier.  "I figured I could determine the bird people's diet by looking at their beaks, like Darwin did with the finches, and maybe bring them food gifts.  That's usually how I make friends anyway.  (Yes, you will all be getting cupcakes later.)  But they look like they're carnivores, and meat's a bit difficult to take with us.  Hopefully they're not carrion eaters, actually.  Cause that's gross."

He wasn't trying to be 'sneaky'... it was just his natural style to be... stealthy... as he slipped into the Gate Room.

His team was still missing two people... Del'noc and Marcus.

Kaspar walks into the gateroom, already sweating from carrying all his gear just the short distance from the locker room.  Hearing that it will still be twelve minutes before the gate can be opened to his destination, Kaspar frowns and looks around the room for any other members of his Team.

While he doesn't immediately see any of his crew, he does see an SGC airman leading Vassandras FRED into the room, through the door on the other side of the gateroom.

Wheezing only a little, Kaspar walks over to the FRED and unlimbers most of his 'droppable' gear -- the Translator Bundle and the backpack-and-contents that comes with the Standard Issue -- onto the little vehicle.

Kaspar peeled back the sleeve over his left wrist and exposed the orange face of his vintage 1970 Swiss-made DOXA divers watch, and frowned.

The floodlights, portable generator, and four fuel cans that Hilda had thoughtfully ordered on behalf of the group had already arrived, neatly stacked beside the FRED. The woman herself was some minutes behind, in similar attire to the last mission, somewhat less bulky with equipment, but just as laden with weapons: the shortbow was marginally smaller than the longbow, but the sword was distinctly longer than the axe. 'I am here.' She could give a few reasons as to why she was late, though they largely boiled down to (a) sorting out her many weapons, (b) interrogating the Armoury officer about the proper care of her sword, and (c) flirting with the Supply officer.

In deference to the dark elf, Hilda hefted up the heavy fuel cans with strong arms and stacked them neatly on the FRED, in the place Vasandra indicated, followed by the generator itself and the floodlights. She put her laptop in the closed compartment.

Then she dumped the rest of her crap where it landed.

"And maybe dinner plans..." Kaspar finishes in an almost-whisper.

"I am here." Hilda said, as she approached and started loading fuel cans and a portable generator onto the FRED.

"Mary Mother of God!  Hilda!" Kaspar exclaimed, when Hilda made to lift the generator by herself, "That generator must weigh over fifty kilograms!  Here, let me help you..."

Despite having travelled extensively in Europe, despite being somewhat cosmopolitan, and despite his upbringing in rural Poland in the middle-20th Century, Kaspar still clings to some "old-fashioned" ideas; like having a problem believing that a woman can be as strong as a man -- a fact which he has had personally disproved to him by a couple of female Soviet soldiers in his past.  Women who threw him around a room like he was a rag-doll.

But, those are stories that would quickly violate the PG-13 Rating of this board... ^_^

But, hit them and they still fall the same.' she ended with a Nordic shrug, and shifted the light neatly into place.

She didn't quite know what to make of Kaspar staring at her, and turned away for the next floodlight. 'Also, I built a pyramid.' Then she watched in awe as Freyda lifted the floodlight with the magic of anti-gravity and force fields. 'I could have used that on the pyramid.'

'Oh, I saw Rajip in Supply.'

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

OOC: Oops. My tired brain yesterday wrote a nice post that was completely wrong! At least Hilda knew what I meant! ;-) There was no MALP at this time. It had already gone through two days ago. It is dark on the other side as the MALP had turned off its spotlight to conserve energy. However, when the gate is opened again, the MALP does transmit an image back. That's what General Hammond is referring to.

The 12 minutes pass by quickly, and it's soon time for SG-X1's gate activation.

The dialing sequence commences, the gate spins, the chevrons lock in once more, and the event horizon whooshes outward before settling back into the vertical 'pool of water'.

Everyone seems to be waiting with bated breath while the MALP's image is transmitted.

A few moments later, General Hammond comes on the intercom.

"Status is unchanged, SG-X1. You are a go."

Rajip approached the rest of the team just as the General's voice came on the intercom.

"Don't tell me you've been waiting," he said, seemingly casually, while still adjusting the shoulder-string of his P90. Without waiting for an answer, he moved to the front of the group. Once there, he looks back, "Let's go, shall we?"

OOC: Rajip and Hilda go first.

For the last chevron, she beat her shield continuously, in time with the beating of her heart, and together they grew faster. She stood as close to the Stargate as she dared as the vortex erupted overhead, wind rushing through her blonde hair. As it settled, she gazed up in awe into the Well of Urðr within the Ring of Stars. She could almost glimpse her fate within the event horizon. 'Have faith, Rajip. We go through the Ring of Stars and along the branches of Yggdrasil the World Tree. This is a holy time.'

Hilda beat her shield three more times then ran up the ramp, hollering 'Fred Bergström!' Hilda leaped up and bounded through—

At Rajip's question, Hilda looked at her sonic emitter device, considering what she could work out from first principles. At its heart, the sonic emitter was just a thing that made sound, like a musical instrument – the idea of weaponised song appealed to the warrior skald. 'I don't think so. It is just sound. We don't hear things through the Stargate any other time – not wind, not birdsong, not weapon fire... Hermod says the Ring of Stars breaks us and everything into little bits to send down the branches of Yggdrasil, as if in the beaks of Huginn and Muninn, the ravens of Odin. The song of the sonic emitter would be broken to bits too.' explained Hilda, who was smarter than she seemed.

The Asgard maneuvered the hover sled to one side as the team prepared to access the gate. It was too bad they didn't mount a sonic emitter onto another of their remote controlled wheeled machines to make this endeavor less risky.

Establishing the event horizon should have vaporized any slime within a few meters in front of the stargate, but in this time testing the sonic emitters through the threshold, it could have moved back into the area immediately in front of the gate.

OOC: Before she offers her hover sled again, will the larger sonic device with the power supply fit on to of the sled?

Feeling pretty pleased with herself at being right about the lack of transmission of sound through a Stargate, Hilda checked her sonic emitter and switched it to standby. The warrior skald was wholly ready to start blasting sound at monsters. 'Yes, sir.'

Then her blue eyes alighted on the larger version, and if she'd learned anything on Midgard it was that bigger was better. She approached old man Kaspar, who seemed intent on struggling with it himself. 'Maybe I should take that?' she suggested. After all, he'd marvelled at her strength the last time.

With that he turned back and stepped into the glistening surface.

Gavin hurries into the Gate Room, having hastily grabbed his gear from Supply, just in time to watch Rajip trying to shoot the event horizon. He'd heard of someone on Earth named Rube Goldberg and briefly wondered if Rajip was trying to replicate that individual's remarkable feats.

"Just remember that the appearance of the wormhole on the other side doesn't extend all the way down to the floor," Gavin cautions. "There's a gap there that's the height of the ring edge, so we could be stepping out into slime."

"Fortunately, the cameras show it's clear. However, if someone does step into the slime, shoot them immediately! With the sound guns, I mean. We don't know how aggressive the slime is once it finds food, or whether the sound guns will work once it starts feeding. Let's try to keep from finding out the hard way."

The large sonic emitter is maybe the size of a laptop computer, but a little thicker. It has rather dense components, though, so it's a tad heavy. It's more awkward than anything.

It could be mounted on top of the hoverchair (I've been picturing it like a high-back office chair). The hoverchair could handle the weight but it'd make it rather top heavy. It'd also be harder to aim... not that it needs much.

FYI: none of the emitters operate continuously. They have an on/off switch and an activation button or trigger.

With a smirk at Kaspar's posturing, Hilda took the heavy device without effort, one-handed, and switched it to standby. The Cimmerian had also recently qualified in rifles and tactical weapons, so hefting a big fricking gun also appealed.

She clutched it tight to her body, not about to let Rajip's doubts come true. 'I will not drop it.' she vowed, a little annoyed that he feared she would, and further annoyed that she would be among the last through the Ring of Stars. She was used to charging in the first wave, to standing in the shield wall, so being relegated to the back was an affront to her courage. Or she could give up the big sonic emitter, but it was too late for that now. She would cross only a heartbeat after Vasandra.

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

After getting their weapons, SG-X3 filters into the Gate Room. Suddenly alarm klaxons sound as the gate begins to activate.

As it settles back into the 'sheet of water' effect of the even horizon, the speakers make another announcement.

"It's SG-6... returning from P37-62X!"

"Open the iris!" General Hammond directs, while a simultaneous 'all clear' signal is broadcast to SG-6.

A moment later, SG-6 steps out of the wormhole.

As soon as the last of the six-man team steps out of the wormhole, the gate 'closes', followed by the iris closing.

"SG-5, stand down," Hammond announces. The armed men shoulder their weapons and file back out of the room.

"Watch out for booby-traps!" Major Matthews, the SG-6 team commander, comments to Randall as he notices SG-X3. "The Creighton Octagon is full of them."

It takes a few minutes for everyone's nerves to settle back down and the stargate routine to return to normal.

"Scheduled gate activation for SG-8... commencing now."

SG-8 is a go!"

The other SG team that was in the Gate Room then files through the wormhole.

Barely 2 minutes later, the sequence begins again.

"Commencing dialing sequence for P5P-82Z."

Once again the stargate's inner circle spins and the routine beings.

"Chevron one engaged..."

One by one, all six chevrons are locked in and engaged. When the sequence is completed, the wormhole is once again established, only this time, it's another outgoing one.

The MALP is sent through first.

"Receiving telemetry from the MALP... status unchanged."

"SG-X3," General Hammond then announces, "you are a go."

He breathes a sigh of relief when the all clear sounds, and nods at SG-5 as they leave. Noting Major Matthews comment to his CO, Sannis files the information away for future use, as he's not sure what or where Creighton Octagon is.

He stares in wonder and excitement as the Gate Chevrons lock in one by one for his first mission, but when the general gives the order, all of the extra emotions and thoughts disipate and the clear mind of a combat veteran takes over. He watches Major Thorne for some kind of indication as to what position he should take and when he should proceed through the gate.

"On your order, Sir" he says to Thorne.

Having been promoted to Captain after the last mission... well, it was still going on, apparently... he was now the team leader for the secondary team heading to Aerielle... a team of geeks.

He still had Eddie Dean and Blaine Saunders as his military support, both enlisted. And the techies: Dr. Addison Bryce, Dr. Karen Moneghan, and Dr. Kuro Katsumoto.

Although the Gate Room was fairly large, he waited until the rest of the team went through, re-established communication with the bird-folk and cleared off of the pad, before ushering his team in.

Command was still monitoring the MALP transmission, so they'd signal him when it was clear.

He'd found that it was way too easy to lose track of time when he was studying things found on the other side of the gates. Apparently, Daniel Jackson had the same problem.

And so it had happened again. He was still struggling to get his backpack on as he hustled into the Gate Room and up the ramp to the Gate. He didn't even hesitate on stepping through the 'pool of water' that was the event horizon of the wormhole.

SG-X2 members take advantage of their brief delay before they can return to do personal things... rest, eat, whatever. The three hours pass all too quickly, though, once they get over their impatience to return.

Unless you have different equipment you want to get, you don't need to post in the Supply or Armory threads. You can just show up here.

By the time you get to the Gate Room, there is already another team in place... the medical team with the body on life support.

"We  as a people became the army scouts and advisors on the lands, then when the left in the early 1920's we were still there our teaching our history and culture largely intact". "Like the Navaho our friends we had bent with the storm absorbing its fury and diverting it to a new path".
"Truly still on our lands the spirit way thrives untouched and reaching back to the first days when ' the One Who Lives Above' placed the first one upon the land to now".

At that moment, the major walked into the Gate Room. Although he'd checked out everyone's file when he was assigned the team, he still gave everyone a quick once-over to make sure they were all properly attired and equipped.

"It's the waiting I hate," he commented to his team to relieve the tension that was slowly growing while they waited.

He glanced at the 'warm body' on the gurney. He didn't really understand how a Goa'uld or a Tok'ra could take over someone's mind and yet leave that mind intact... mostly. Although he was assured that the mind of the body they were taking through was gone, he couldn't help wondering what would happen if Sarnak did transfer into the body and then the original mind 'woke up'.

He was quite prepared to kill the body regardless of what mind was inside. It was one of those 'hard decisions' that had to be made.

The five minutes pass without incident, and then it's time for the gate to be activated to take the team back to X82-37R, otherwise known as Waterfallter or Croma.

As usual, the MALP goes through first. The image it sends back show the area around the gate to be unchanged from before. The waterfall is still there.

The MALP shows a dozen of the otterfolk take to the slide that carries them down to the pool of water near the gate. They slip into the water at the bottom without a splash, but don't immediately surface. They are waiting to see who comes through the gate.

Apparently Crom is watching the gate and recognizes the source code. A bell starts ringing, and the otterfolk in the water surface and gather around the gate.

Eric stopped a few feet from the gate room and looked over the gear he was given for the mission and tried to ensure he hadn't overlooked or forgotten anything.  Satisfied with his own gear he looked along the hallway for any sign of his team and shrugged assuming they may have already been in the gate room or were going to be there shortly.

Taking a single calming breath he made his way into the gate room itself and as expected he was almost awestruck as he first laid eyes on the device.  Whatever he had heard or read about the device hadn't prepared him for it's size or what to expect when it was actually activated, though the later would have to wait until his team was assembled and in the room.  After a few seconds of looking at the gate he looked around the room and noticed Lieutenant Colonel Thomas was already in the room apparently waiting for his team as well.

He made his way over to the other officer and stopped a few feet in front of him.  "Colonel Thomas, it seems we're both suffering from waiting for our teams.  In the mean time do you have any preference as to which of our teams go through this gate first once our teams are here and ready to go?"  He asked casually as he reached up with a free hand and adjusted the baseball style cap on his head even though it wasn't needed.

"I do not know right off hand Major, I mean this is both your and mine first trip through the Gate, from what I understand we are there for a peaceful trip, so which team goes through first I am not sure it matters. I just suggest that when we go through as soon as we get our bearing back, a defensive set up should be maintained until we know there is no hostiles on the other side."

He looked around, then back up into the control area as he waited on the rest of both teams. "Are we expecting anyone on the other end of this to meet us there when we do get through?"

Nevertheless he allowed his gaze to follow Michael's and turned around to look at the control room for a few seconds.  Without knowledge of how the gate actually worked or where his team was he turned his attention toward the door and took an at ease stance as he waited for the rest of the two respective teams to arrive in the gate room.

After Sarah and Lucky get to the Gate Room, they have only a minute to wait before the scheduled gate activation sequence begins.

"Schedule gate activation to X2U-238 commencing now."

An alarm klaxon begins to sound, notifying everyone of imminent gate activation to make sure they get and stay out of the way of the wormhole materialization. The inner dial spins seven times, each time stopping with a new symbol under the upper chevron, which then moves down over the symbol to register it. One of the side chevrons then lights up each time. Finally, the seventh spin stops at the top chevron, it moves to register, and then it retracts and lights up. 1.2 seconds later, the conic bubble of the materializing event horizon appears for 3 seconds, and then settles back into the water-like vertical plane of the event horizon.

"You are clear to go," General Hammond announces from the observation room on the upper level of the Gate Room command.

"You'll need to take charge of the FRED, Sergeant Ward. We can control it from here, of course, but only until the gate closes."

"Gate activation in... 2 minutes."

"Once the gate opens, we'll radio ahead to SG-X2 and let them know you are coming. If we can't reach them, we'll send a drone through first to survey the site. If it looks normal, it may mean that SG-X2 is just out of range."

The gate address is activated on the computer and the gate ring begins its spin, locking in the 7 chevrons one by one.

The event horizon is formed, which whooshes out in the unstable energy vortex, lasting for 2 seconds before collapsing back into the 'puddle' of the wormhole.

"SGC to SG-X2. This is General Hammond. Do you copy? I am sending two additional people through to assist you, along with additional supplies." The message is transmitted through the wormhole.

"Schedule gate activation in 42 minutes," came the intercom announcement in the gate room. It was meant to warn anyone who was working in the gate room that the wormhole would open and that they needed to make sure they were clear of that area.

"Outbound gate to X3F-1622 for team SG-X2," the announcement continued.

By the time SG-X2 began to arrive at the gate room, a FRED was already there. It had an extended stretcher mounted on the top that held an unconscious Minotaur.

"He's still unconscious," Dr. Frasier explained to Coleman and Lizzy when they arrived. "He was exposed to the drug for a much longer period of time than any of the rest of your team, so it's taking him a lot longer to flush it out of his system."

"I could have sped that up some, but then he might have woken in a strange place. I've been monitoring him, though. He should regain consciousness in about another hour. However, without knowing more about Minotaur physiology, I can't say if there will be any long-term effects. I don't think so, but I'm not sure. The most I expect he'll experience might be some temporary amnesia."

Jason geared up, grabbed his weapons from the Armory and made it to the Gate Room with plenty of time to spare... and just in time to hear the General's reply to Doctor McKeon.

"Oh, hello there, Doctor," he said to Lizzy. "Are you on Special Assignment or have you been assigned to our team?"

When she replies, he informs her of what happened so far.

"I don't recall what got us interested in this gate address at first, but we discovered some... well, we think it's advanced technology. They have these handguns that fire bolts of lightning... apparently powered by some sort of crystal technology. Kind of like the crystals of the gate and that the Tok'ra use."

"We're still investigating that aspect. But, these Minotaurs have lost the knowledge behind them; they just know how to use them."

"The minotaurs are friendly. We think they've had stargate visitors before."

"Besides the chemical fog we ran into in the upper level of the arcology, there are two other dangers. First, there's a wind of some sort that blows down off the mountains. It's at least dangerous to the Minotaurs; we haven't stepped in it yet, so we don't what it will do to us. Best defense is simply not be be outside when it blows."

"We're not even sure what this wind is... chemicals, bacteria, virus... it might even be alive."

"The second threat is the psychors. These are insect-like creatures that feed off the crystals. They are inside the tower. Kyle was able to make mental contact with them. Convinced them we meant them no harm. They attack the mind. They thought we were invading their territory and their feeding grounds."

"That's it in a nutshell."

Nothing comes up in the intervening wait time, so, when the scheduled time arrives, another announcement--"Gate activation in 30 seconds!"--is a final warming and also informs everyone that it's right on schedule.

The gate sequence is dialed and, when the final symbol is locked in, the wormhole whooshes outward for a second before it settles back into the puddle of water.

After the control room signals OK, Coleman is the first through the gate to make sure it is safe on the other side because they wouldn't send the FRED with the unconscious Minotaur on it through into danger.

Once Coleman signals it's okay, Jason pilots the FRED up the ramp and through the gate.

That leaves Kyle, Karen, Lizzy and Carter.

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

Being the Marine she is where early is on time and on time is late Naseem was already in the gate room when Sarah came in. She was going last minute checks on her gear before they deployed.

She nodded when Sarah walked in. "Ma'am. Ready for another go at this? I know I am."

She appeared to have the same gear she did last time and was checking her magazines, Zat, and ribbon device. Her staff weapon was resting across her lap.

Hilda arrived on time, more or less, in her standard uniform and kit and all the rest she added to it, with sword and shield and Viking helm. She didn't see a need to change her bundles; there wasn't much else in the others that she could make use of.

'Well again.' she greeted Sarah and Naseem, having decided that the Tok'ra ettin was probably alright after all.

Guess better question is will the General be briefing us and deciding who's top kick before we go back?"

Looking at the FRED controller, and smirked at Tate, "No Rock Paper Scissors this time."

'Thanks.' Hilda said to Naseem, as she checked her gear for the last time before going through the Ring of Stars. She was gaining respect for Naseem after she'd observed her prowess as a warrior on the firing range, and learned her tastes in music. But Hecate remained a fearful serpent to her, however. 'I think it is because I'm used to the bow. Its recoil goes the other way.' she decided. She pulled out her composite bow and hooked a string on one end, bending the bow with great force in her arms until she hooked the other end.

He looked over at Hilda, and suggested, "Should have thought of it at the range, But if you can handle the stock being a little bit longer, we can see Fred when we get back and get you a recoil pad for your rifle. It will take a lot of the kick back out and help you steady your aim."

Kaspar walks through the open door into the gate room, dressed in full field kit--minus a helmet, though he's got a forage cap shoved under the left shoulder strap of his MOLLE vest--and he's only sweating a little bit under the weight.  He's wearing the same color field uniform as everyone else--which may seem odd, as he hadn't contacted anyone on the Team to either ask or instruct what to wear.

Stopping just inside the entrance, Kaspar looks around--and when his eye falls upon Sarah, he makes a beeline for her.

"Colonel Morgan," Kaspar says, halting next to Sarah and performing that Polish heel-click-head-bow thing they do rather than saluting when both parties aren't wearing headgear--which, frankly, looks even more ridiculous being performed by a man with just under a hundred pounds of gear on his back.

"Might I have a moment of your time, before the Team leaves?"

Sarah greeted each of the arrivals in turn despite seemingly focusing on her tablet.   "Naseem.  Hilda.  Tate.  Lucky...."  It almost sounded like a roll call - and she gives the later a half-smile as she concludes the list only to have Kaspar arrive.

She ponders the man's request for the briefest moment before shaking her head, "Firstly, my name is Sarah.  In a team this small, using a title is pretentious and immediately reveals a chain of command.   Let's avoid this, please."  She concludes that point before adding, "As to a moment, I'm sure anything that needs to be said can be said in front of the team.   I have no secrets and my laundry - dirty or otherwise - has been well and truly aired."

In reply to Sarah Morgan (msg # 276):

"Actually, Col--forgive me--SarahThat is what I wished to ask you about." Kaspar responded.

"General Hammond explained to me your disdain--or, perhaps I should just say, your dislike--of my use of honorifics and formal politeness.  I do understand your feelings that my holding to the use of such mannerisms may seem empty, or meaningless, or may even be some kind of social deception on my part.  But I assure you that nothing could be further from the truth."

"That's just the way I was raised--to always show respect to others by recognizing any honorifics or titles they held, and to never assume the level of social intimacy that using a person's Given Name means, without their express permission to do so."

Kaspar pauses a moment, as a shadow of some remembered pain crosses his face,

"Though you may not fully understand this, please remember that, until I was in my early Thirties, I lived under Soviet Occupation, and if we did not smile and behave in this polite manner--even to each other, because you never knew who might be an informant--then we could be seen as social dissidents.  And social dissidents tended to disappear in the middle of the night, never to be seen again."

"Over the years, that happened to several of my friends."

Kaspar runs his right hand through his lightly salt-and-peppered dark hair.

"As you know, our fields of expertise--Anthropology and Linguistics--do overlap, to a degree, so, of course I had read many of your published works, as well as followed your career in the news.  Along with many others, as we all do, in our professions.  I had a solid, professional respect for your work--though I admit, I had failed to notice that in most of those professional works, how you tended to avoid the mention of any of your Degrees and Awards...or Military Ranks--before we ever met.  I don't believe I can think of a single publication were you were ever referred to as anything more than as an 'expert in linguistic sciences', for that matter."

"Then, when you suddenly joined the Team I was both pleased and thrilled to be able to work with you.  But, as I said, it is not in my nature to assume to go right ahead and start calling someone by their Given Name, and I didn't know if it would be proper to call you 'Doctor' or 'Professor', or what!  I was thus both a little perplexed, as well as a bit flub-mouthed...uh, that sounds better in Polish..."

"And then, as we were examining the planet-side Henge, our exposure to whatever-it-was began, and things started making a left turn--for which I am both ashamed and humbly apologetic."

"So.  That's all I wanted--to ask you, officially, what form of address you want me to use with you.  And, if I understood you correctly, you have just stated that you wish to simply be called 'Sarah'.  That's something that I can easily accommodate...Sarah."

Kaspar finishes with a hopeful grin.

', maybe I will try it.' Hilda agreed, adjusting her bow and giving it a few test draws.

She had to think about this, but the Cimmerian was more accepting of working with "the ettin" than Kaspar had feared back on that moon. A history of tit-for-tat raids and feuds, shifting alliances and duels over honour and mere drunken brawls, and then living with it and working together after, among the Norse made her much more accepting of yesterday's enemies becoming today's friends, of finding friends among enemies, than one might expect. She glanced over her shoulder to Sarah and Kaspar, hoping they could do the same. 'Okay, at the range next time. If they will let me shoot a few arrows into the targets instead.' She nocked a blunt arrow and carefully drew it back, the bow creaking, before she let it fly across the gate room, clattering wildly against the far wall. 'There's more... care in the bow, I think. You cannot kill right away, you must take the time to think it through.' Then she went to retrieve it.

"As you saw when we went through the gate on the ha'tak, the controller--what we call the 'dial home device', or DHD--was that triangular panel atop the short column."

"We don't have one of those here, or even the circular one. We still don't know what happened to the one that originally went to this gate. Instead, we had to use our computers to figure out the correct address and dial it on the gate."

"Your triangular DHD may be buried with the gate. I suspect that the Alteran computer will one day direct you to dig up the gate... when it feels your people are ready to deal with any threat that might come through it."

"On the other hand, perhaps the Alterans didn't take into account the Tau'ri arriving there. You also have the Alteran defense system, so maybe it is time to raise the gate."

"Now that we have Sarah on the team, perhaps she can talk to your Elders and the Alteran computer and work out something."

"As for waiting upon the General, I'm not sure." Kaspar says with a shrug, turning to look up at the control room window.

"I received the usual pre-Mission Briefing folder, but it contained very little--mostly just confirmation from Captain Tourmaline that the Ha'tak, still holding the Star Gate, continued to remain on planet.  As well as a brief mission statement ordering the Team to continue to analyze and investigate the Henge Transport system, while giving investigation of the Lunar Base a high priority."

"The documents also mentioned we had authority to continue talks with the First Ones, and even establish initial relations with them--subject to approval from higher authority, of course.  And that we can pursue such talks on our own initiative."

"I seem to recall we thought we'd seen one of the Henge Portals lead to the First One city, so getting back there will not be a problem."

Kaspar lowers his voice and leans a little closer to Sarah,

"I say that because there was no mention in the papers I got, concerning Captain Tourmaline's orders for after we've left the Star Gate.  She may have orders to, finally, begin the journey to bring the Ha'tak back to Earth.  And if that's the case, we'll have to then convince the First Ones to dig up their Gate and let us use it.  Even if only for the trip back home."

Kaspar straightens, and looks to the Gate,

"But I was a bit surprised when the order came to report straight to the gate room, rather than to the briefing room for a pre-mission meeting.  Maybe there is some urgent issue."

With a rueful grin, Kaspar raises an eyebrow and looks aside to Sarah,

"Or maybe General Hammond is just in a hurry to get us the Hell off of his base."

"The General is still trying to work out a plan for the Ha'tak. It does not have enough fuel to return to Earth. The alternative is to land it on some world where your tech teams can study it or provide fuel for it."

The reason he chose to visit the Tau'ri in the first place was that they had a sense of adventure about them, a touch of excitement... something that the Tollani lacked in their staid advanced civilization.

The Tollani had been like the Tau'ri once upon a time. He'd have to look into when that changed when he got back.

The High Council had also wanted to find out if the Tau'ri were a threat. While they claimed to be above that sort of thing, they were clearly annoyed that the Tau'ri were the (probably) the Fifth Race. Why weren't the Tollani?

Her head was filled with so much wonder!

She'd seen so many new things, so many sights, and learned so much! And, yet, she knew there was so much more! Even as the Tau'ri were concerned about her, she was concerned about whether her people were ready for this. Could she show them all of it? All at once? Could she contain herself if she didn't?

Would the Instructor understand? Could it? It must be programmed for when the First Ones made contact with the outside... universe! Not just outside the city...

Were her people ready? If she'd been asked, she'd have said she wasn't ready. And yet, here she was! On another planet... half a galaxy away! There were tales of the Ring of Stars, but it had always been... as the Tau'ri would put it... a fairy tale. It had never quite seemed real. And then the Tau'ri came knocking on the city's doors!

She couldn't decide if she'd been in the wrong place at the wrong time... or the right place at the right time! She did know that she wouldn't take it back even if she could!

She was right beside Gavan as he walked through the Ring of Stars and arrived on the other side in the Ha'tak. Another wonder! She had never thought she'd been inside one of the Dragon Lords' ships. She'd never wanted to!

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

Since it had taken a bit more time to outfit everyone for what looked to be a simple mission but which no one expected it to be, everyone made it to the Gate Room with only about 5 minutes before the scheduled gate activation.

At the appropriate time, the alarm sounded and the gate ring began its ritual spinning. When the final chevron was locked in, the 'whoosh' accompanied the appearance of the protrusion of 'water' before settling down to the 'pool' once more.

A few minutes later, General Hammond announced that they were getting an image from the MALP and that it still showed the same tranquil beach scene.

"Remember, folks, there's no shade on that island. You can get sunburned in 20 minutes. We'll expect a report and possibly a return in 30 minutes."

"You are cleared to go!"

Re: SGC: Gate Room (Level 28)

"Ok, move out."

Coleman dutifully waits for each of his team to step through before he heads through as well. He totally understands everyone's excitement about this. He certainly feels that excitement himself. But he also has to consider the mission and his people. Hopefully, this really will just be a day at the beach.

Jackie jumps in after Lizzie, screaming like it was the first time. Then regains her composure on the other side.
