Re: P5J-249: Oz

Hilda shrugged to Kaspar's options for titles; she just didn't want to have a lesser one from Rajip. She didn't respond as the Ring of Stars opened and Earl Hammond spoke to them.

'Ask him to send power source, and a bridge.' she said to Kaspar, nagging into the conversation.

Re: P5J-249: Oz

Gavin works with Vasandra to try and recharge the power crystal from the DHD. It wasn't that they didn't have power to spare from FRED, but was it enough, and could they convert it and transfer it to the crystal.

He'll try to use his electronics knowledge to figure out a conversion method, and his Knowledge (engineering) skill to determine if they have enough energy and how to build the conversion device.

If Vasandra can assist him in either category (a DC 10 check with either skill), that'll add a +2 to his result.

02:58, Fri 14 Mar 2014: Gavin rolled 29 using 1d20+9 ((20)) Electronics skill check.

02:58, Fri 14 Mar 2014: Gavin rolled 25 using 1d20+6 ((19)) Knowledge (engineering) skill check.

"Ha ! It's good to know that you are safe Major." replied Hammond. "Don't worry about your report, it can wait. Are there risk of new tremors incoming? If you need help to get the DHD back up online, we can send you a SG team."

'Ask him to send power source, and a bridge.' Hilda said to Kaspar, nagging into the conversation.

Kaspar turned a surprised look at Hilda, "That is an absolutely brilliant idea, Miss Hilda!" he said in his midwest-America accent, then keyed open the mic to the General.

"Ak-chooly, General," Kaspar transmitted, again switching to a thick Polish accent, "Vee are, at dee moment, on dee wrong side uff a chasm opened by dee oorth-quakes.  Dee DHD is vit us, but dee Stargate iz on udder side.  Vood be great adwantage if you could send engineering team vit bridging equipment tru dee gate.  Uh...I vood say chasm is five, mebbe six meters vide, here."

Kaspar paused a moment and glanced back-and-forth between Hilda and Rajip, to see if they had a guess on the width of the crevasse that differed from his, then continued.

"Yes, five or six meters.  Oh, und a spare DHD power krystal, if you haff vun, vood be appreciated.  Over."

Kaspar removed his hand from his mic and, still looking over at the Stargate, commented to Hilda and Rajip, "Now, either he has what we need, and we're out of here in an hour-or-so, or we're probably spending the night..."

Hilda was no expert in the English language, but could have sworn that Kaspar's accent kept changing, with one for talking to the team, one for Earl Hammond. Maybe it was a special dialect for speaking to superiors? She'd ask him about it later.

She nodded at Kaspar's assessment of the distance, though metres were a bit new to her. 'Or maybe ask for a generator if they don't have the crystal?'

Re: P5J-249: Oz

Rather than wasting time trying to help Gavin with the tasks he already has well in hand Vasandra keeps herself busy working on the power supply itself.  Retrieving a variety of power generator, wiring, and fuel from the sealed compartment of the FRED where all the important items are kept.

Once the conversation through the gate gets to a lull where she can help make things easier she offers the advice she has.

”Rather than have them risk a whole team just to lay down a bridge, just have them send the bridge layer through with some additional camping gear, operating it is easy enough and we can bring it back with us once we get the DHD running properly, or if we don't it will be fewer people we need to leave behind should we end up needing to resort to plan B.”

Re: P5J-249: Oz

"That's a pretty harsh situation. I will see what I can do for you." replied Hammond to the Major. "During this time, try to find a solution on your own if you can. I can't ensure you that I will be able to fulfill your request."

A few seconds passed and the general's voice could be heard again throughout the radio. "I will contact you in 30 minutes. Hammond, over." And then, the Stargate closed after Kaspar had acknowledged Hammond's last message.

After the gate closed itself, Gavin and Vasandra were hard at work on the energy conversion device. With what they were able to find in the FRED, including its batteries, they finally managed to create the device. For anyone with no electronic skills, it looked like a pile of electrical wires mixed with some boards and other components. But Gavin and Vasandra were sure that it would work.

Before they could made a first test, the Stargate's chevron started to lit one by one. It was now 30 minutes since Hammond contacted them and he was punctual, just as usual.

The gate opened and the radio started to emit the general's message:

"I've got some bad news for you. None of our engineer teams are available and we can't provide you with a bridge or something equivalent. You will have to find something on this planet. How are you going with the DHD repowering?"

Hilda had soon grown antsy and impatient waiting for the others to fix the broken DHD, and returned to the village to find a sturdy cart. She also explored the village and scavenged any already-cut logs and wooden boards she found lying in people's barns or amidst the wreckage of demolished buildings, and looked for any left-behind hatchets, hammers, and nails. She didn't plan to build a bridge, if she could maybe get the DHD into the cart, but wanted to have a good set of carpentry supplies anyway. Her own war-axe made for a decent wood-cutting axe as well.

OOC: Searching the village for a cart and carpentry supplies, 12, though we have the time to just Take 10 for 13 or Take 20 for 23. Hilda will search until she finds what she wants.

Re: P5J-249: Oz

As Gavin was trying to recharge the DHD... unsuccessfully so far--there seemed to be wave frequency disparity that he couldn't quite bring into alignment... he took a moment to re-think, look around, and reassess the situation.

Although it hadn't been his problem at this juncture, the engineer in him had automatically attacked the problem of the bridge.

"Maybe you could find some unbroken doors in the village. If we double them up over top of a few sturdy logs, we drive FRED over them and pull the DHD... if I ever get it fixed."

"I'm not sure I'm going to be able to recharge it. Maybe we can pull the power crystal from that other transport system in the temple."

They still really didn't know if it was a temple... it could have been the gate equivalent of a train station, but it was as good a term as any. There was also no way of knowing where the people in the village had gone... or when. The evidence suggested that it was recent, but without actual physical confirmation that they existed, that was problematical as well.

Kaspar shrugged his shoulders, even though the General couldn't see the action.

"Vee are probably stuck here overnight, at least. Shelter iz no problem, und I tink vee are safe enough to go to standard long-term exploration protocols, vit a radio check effery four hours.  Uff course, a leetle bottle uff vodka vood be nice..."

"I'm not sure I'm going to be able to recharge it. Maybe we can pull the power crystal from that other transport system in the temple." Gavin suggested.

Kaspar turned a frown towards Gavin,

"The answer to that is not just 'no', Gavin, but 'Aw, Hell No!" Kaspar responded.

"The tech in that building is important enough that we will not take any chances with it.  If we have to camp-out here for a year, while we wait for them to send a ship out to get us, we will not do anything to possibly damage that device, in there.  I hope I'm clear on that?"

Setting the last of the wires in place just as the gate opens Vasandra pauses in her work to let the next phase of communication take place, just in case something changes and they need to adjust the plan before testing the current iteration of it.

”We should be ready to open the gate before the next thirty minute check there is no reason to stay on this world any longer than necessary as we have no idea when the next quake, accidental or otherwise, will start breaking important things again.  If the gate fails for some reason we can have the ship here in a few minutes, once a message gets to the alpha site but this planet is not near enough to anything we know about to make that important unless we think we can get the temple running more effectively by finding it's destination point the hard way first.”

Huffing and grunting with a good deal of swearing, Hilda hauled a wooden cart laden with lumber, logs, old planks, and two broken barn doors down the yellow brick road. She filling the roll of cart-horse with ease, with all the strength and endurance her people were known for. A little too late, she remembered the FRED, but it was tied up recharging the DHD or something. And she wasn't about to ask. 'I have found things to make a bridge... But I don't want to drop the DHD down the pit again. If we load the DHD onto the cart or the FRED, we can go around the rift that way back to the Stargate.'

After a moment of hesitation, the General started to speak.
"A portable DHD you said ? Well, I would have to ask to Carter to build one first. We don't have device like that and we don't even know if this could be done. I'm sorry Major but you will have to use the DHD of this planet." answered Hammond to Kaspart's request.

"I will give you and your team one hour to contact us by your own means. If you don't manage to operate the stargate in the delay, we will send you some essentials so you can have a better night on this planet while we look for a solution."

Before Kaspar could acknowledge, Hammond added : "Good luck, SG-X1. Hammond, over." And the stargate closed again.

Re: P5J-249: Oz

During all this time, Hilda had gather all the essential resources to build a makeshift bridge. She was hard at work and the cart was really heavy but her Cimmerian strength was more than enough to pull all the wood and tools from the village to the Stargate.

Around the DHD, Gavin and Vasandra were also working hardly. Or at least, their brain. After multiple calculations and theorization, they finally conclude that the power crystal was now charged enough to allow them to dial.
Gavin then pressed a symbol and it lighted up as well as the first chevron on the gate.

Since the big Earthquake, the team was feeling some little aftershocks from time to time. They were now hoping that a large tremor would not occur again.

'If Thor keeps pounding the earth like that, then I really do not want to be moving anything over the hole.' Hilda reiterated after the last tremor. She just knew that the fates would have it that there would be another earthquake and the hole would widen as they tried to get any over some bridge.

She watched as the others worked on the DHD, and was relieved to see one of the runes light up with the inner fire. 'Good! If it works from here, we do not need to move it, right? We can just drive the FRED around the rift and go back to Midgard.'

"Yes and no." Kaspar responded, "Remember that the gate, once activated, only stays open for about a half hour.  Now, I haven't checked, but from here it looks like it's about a kilometer down that way before this crevasse narrows to a point where the FRED could safely cross without danger of getting hung up.  And that's uneven terrain.  But, I'm not the expert, here."

Kaspar turns towards Vasandra, "Captain Tourmaline, in your opinion, if you activated the DHD, here, and then drove the FRED over a kilometer to a point where you could cross the crevasse," Kaspar pointed down range, "and then drive over a kilometer back to the gate -- all before the gate closed in 30 minutes?"

Stopping the dialing sequence after the first symbol as the test has now been successfully completed Vasandra begins packing up the extra gear back onto the FRED immediately.  When the discussion turns back to her she considers the question for but a moment before offering the obvious answer.

”The maximum window is thirty eight minutes and the FRED could easily cover that distance in that time over uneven but generally flat terrain but as we do not know how much power will be available it may be a good idea to move the FRED and most of us across first, then leave only one person tied to a secured line in position to dial as we do not know if the DHD will have enough power to hit the activation limit and good reason to suspect it will be nowhere near enough.”

Re: P5J-249: Oz

"Actually, Sergeant," Gavin explains to Rajip, "the gate only works one way. In order for anyone to go through from this side, it has to be opened from this side."

"In any case, if the FRED can move that fast, I don't see why you... or anyone else here... couldn't jog down to the end of the ravine and back in the time available. Given our various... conditions... I would suggest that you and Hilda activate the gate and then jog to join us. I'm not sure any of the rest of us could do that."

"I am as fit as the next person, but I do not have the experience or training that you two have. That is the only reason I suggested you two. But I will gladly be the one to dial the gate if that is what the rest of you wish."

"It's the age-old buddy system... if one of you stumbles, the other is there to assist. Besides, while I believe it is the Marine motto to leave no man behind, the SGC has adopted that as well. We would not go through the gate until you and Hilda rejoined us."

"If it cannot be accomplished in that manner, we can then rethink the plan."

"As for DHD and power, Captain,"
Gavin was now addressing Vassandra the way the Major did--it must be rubbing off, "there is enough power for at least one full dialing sequence. Unless, of course, the DHD is further damaged, it never does only a partial dialing; it needs to have enough energy for the full sequence to even begin."

"Since I was not able to determine WHY the DHD lost power, I cannot say for certain that it will draw subsequent energy from the wormhole itself, once it's established."

Kaspar listens to Gavins suggestion, nodding in agreement as the Tollin speaks.

"That's pretty much what I had in mind," Kaspar says, "Though I had thought that the FRED would have been faster than a person running.  But then again..." Kaspar grabs his own belly and makes as if to shake it, "...my running days are many years behind me, so my estimates of how fast people can run may be outdated."

Kaspar turns to Rajip and Hilda.

"What do you two youngsters think?  Can you make a two kilometer dash, over uneven but relatively flat terrain, in under 30 minutes?  Assuming we actually keep the gate open for that long?"

Damn the crash course in space travel I've received before embarking on the mission. It looks like they've left almost all of importance out of it, Rajip thought, hearing Gavin's explanations. The consideration of the fragmentary knowledge he possessed had almost made him miss the discussion that followed.

"As Hilda says, it's not even worth mentioning if we have this much time. Further quakes are possibly the only thing that could delay us long enough to miss the ride."

OOC: Even if it's 2 km, then a 30 minute window is long enough for walking the distance, right?

Doing some quick calculations in her head Vasandra opts for getting the loaded FRED rolling right away, sitting on the back of it as she uses the remote control to guide it along a path well away from the edge of the crack in the ground..

”There is no reason to plan to use the whole of the time window once we get the FRED across we will toss lines to you before you activate the DHD for the full dialing sequence.  I would suggest using the time it will take to drive around building some kind of bridge for yourselves, if that fails you can always climb back up.”

Though the walk around the rift wasn't much, Hilda could see the wisdom in making a crude bridge to save time and have a second option if the rift continued to grow. She took two long planks from the cart, laid them on the grassy ground with their ends overlapping, and began nailing them together to extend their length across the rift. One more, and a barn door laid across it, and she would have a crude bridge.

Some Nordic cursing arose as Hilda hit her thumb.
