XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

Once SG-X2 steps through the wormhole, they find themselves standing on bare rock in front of the stargate. The new-style DHD is just ahead, about where the regular one would be. There's a bit of steam coming up through the stone from cracks in it, which is enough to keep the area around the gate clear of snow.

The ice castle is behind the gate. The icy landscape makes it hard to judge distance, so it's probably a good thing the MALP had been able to determine that.

There's no sign of the wildlife at this time.

The temperature is below zero, but not by that much.

He started to push the symbols one by one and engaged the connection.

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

Michael can't try dialing home with this strange DHD until the wormhole is shut down. That doesn't happen until Blaine comes through, having brought up the rear.

He finally steps through, and then the gate closes.

Sarah and Travis have been scanning around with anti-glare arctic binoculars, but don't see anything at first. However, by the time Blaine comes through, Sarah spots what is probably a herd of animals about two miles away. There are maybe 50 creatures; they look like caribou.

Travis has been looking for more hazardous sights. He doesn't spot any, but then again, in this kind of terrain, an army could be hiding under his feet and he wouldn't know it. He does spot one telltale sign, however--a faint wisp of smoke coming up from ice castle.

The major is able to dial the gate address for Earth... each key lights up as he presses it, and when the 7th is pressed, the gate activates.

++"SG-X2, the MALP isn't rated for that kind of weather, so you should probably send it back. Do you have anything to report?" General Hammond says over the radio.

Before sending the MALP back to Earth, can you send us the last meteorological informations please ?"

Switching his binoculars to IR, Travis doesn't see much difference in his surroundings. The smoke shows up clearly, but he also sees half a dozen similar 'columns' of heat in the surrounding area.

He does notice that the ice castle registers as a degree or two warmer than the surrounding ice.

"Telemetry on the weather is unchanged," Sgt Wyler replied. "We detect no variations in pressure, humidity, temperature or wind. We don't know enough about the overall weather of the planet, however, to say what kind of window that gives you. Here, it'd be twelve to twenty-four hours. It could be a lot less there."

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

Travis doesn't need to do much trailbreaking. There's clearly a trail through the snow once he moves toward the castle. It's not really snow at the moment anyway, more like ice... a bit crunchy and doesn't compress much.

There's a clear ice pack on the land, rather than a winter covering, so for all the team knows, this could be the middle of summer.

They reach the castle without incident, without seeing any additional signs of life other than the thin wisp of smoke. As they get closer and change perspective slightly, they can tell that the smoke isn't come from the center of the castle.

There is no sign of a door but after walking around it a bit, an opening is found. It kind of goes in sideways and then doubles back on itself.

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

It quickly becomes apparent that the design of this ice castle was to use a series of baffles to protect the inhabitants from the wind and weather. It won't stop the cold, but it will keep out chilling winds and driving snow.

Travis missed it at first, but after a few turns, he notices that there is a mark cut into the ice of the walls, down near the floor where it'd be easy to miss. It's a trail mark, but has no particular significance... just a way for the person who made them to retrace his or her steps.

He can tell by the ice shavings on the floor that is fairly recent, though he can't say how recent... an hour, a day, possibly longer. He doesn't think it's that long ago. The ones closest to the entrance likely would have been blown away by the wind.

((Should have thrown some yaks at you to keep you busy... just trying to get the new folks advanced far enough to meet up with you...))

The passages twist back upon themselves in a kind of zigzag pattern--baffles to keep the wind from penetrating too deep into the structure. They are not geometrically even in thickness, and though it looks rather random and haphazard at first glance, there seems to be a method to the madness.

There are intersections, where a side passage cuts back in the same direction but the main one continues on straight, sometimes to zigzag once or twice before dead-ending.

The marks Travis noticed were only at intersections. They are clearly man-made and intentionally cut into the ice, and even show directionality, meaning whoever made them intended on using them to find his or her way back.

As the group comes to the third such intersection, they can hear a noise... a kind of low rumble is what it sounds like at first. It seems to be echoing throughout the ice castle, but it can't be determined exactly where it's coming from.

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

The low, 'distant' rumbling suddenly gets louder, probably indicating it is getting closer. As it does so, it resolves itself into voices... shouting... and footsteps... the thumping of feet running.

The team is just at an 'H' intersection when a woman and a man come running into view around a corner from down on the right. As they round that corner, a harpoon flies past them to hit the wall just behind them.

They get about half way down the hall before they realize that SG-X2 is there.

The man is carrying a staff weapon.

The noise seems to be coming from behind them, but it also seems to be coming from the left-hand hallway.

Then, just as suddenly, a strange creature staggers around the corner down on the left. It's a large shaggy white-furred humanoid with a bull-like head and long horns. It, too, makes it halfway down that hallway before it seems to notice the SG team, but it doesn't stop.

It bellows out what is probably a language, which is echoed by the 'horde' of people with harpoons that round the corner obviously in threatening pursuit.

When they arrived at the H intersection, Álfríðr's first reaction was to ironically thank the Jaffa : "Oh. Thanks for this help. Now, we are encircled."

There was four ways in this intersection and only one was free. But instead of running in this direction, Álfríðr started to slip discreetly behind SG-X2, taking advantage of their discussion as they were busy enough to not notice her.
Even if she did not know them, they didn't looked aggressive and they seemed to have powerful weapons. They could be a great shield if the beast or the natives decided to attack her.

She was mistrustful toward SG-X2 because she was unable to understand them. But as they really seemed to be the more powerful, it was worth the risk to try to hide behind them.

The horde of 'angry villagers' does not seem like they are inclined to have a pow-wow. Besides harpoons, they are also wield knives. And they are not stopping!

Harpoons fly at the shaggy creature and miss, and harpoons fly at the Jaffa and woman and miss.

Neither the shaggy creature nor the Jaffa and the woman can stop advancing forward because if they do, the angry villagers will close the distance, currently at about 30 feet, and attack them.

Alfrior and Shor'zal are a bit surprised, if not yet relieved, that these new people speak Jaffa. No one else that Alfrior had met spoke any language other than the native one, whatever that was.

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

The shaggy creature never slowed down at the sight of SG-X2, and even Michael's display of firepower at the ceiling did not seem to affect the beast. Within seconds, he'd overrun SG-X2's position.

Travis and Michael were grabbed gingerly by the creature and lifted aside down the unknown passage. It nimbly stepped around Sarah and continued running down the passageway from whence SG-X2 had come.

By now, the angry mob was in Michael's face. The first villager finally seems to register SG-X2's presence, particularly since the beast was blocking their view.

"Who you? Why you let minnator go? We take your fur instead!"

Although only Sarah understood all the words, there was one word that sounded familiar to everyone.

He barely gives Michael a chance to reply before he stabs at him with his harpoon.

It sort of registers with Michael now that his display of firepower meant nothing to these people. He's forgotten that most of the galaxy has never seen firearms. It was a technology never developed by the Goa'uld, and most definitely discouraged by them.

Alfrior and Shor'zal had pulled up short upon seeing SG-X2. Alfrior recognized the significance of their weapons even if she hadn't ever seen anything quite like that, especially after Michael displayed what his weapon could do.

The angry mob didn't care. In her brief stay here, she had seen that they had a small grasp of technology but only for what it could do, not for what it really was. They had a word that seemed to mean something like 'techno-magic'. But these weapons of the strangers were clearly beyond their immediate comprehension.

Alfrior had wanted to get behind these strangers, to let them deal with the angry mob, especially after one of the newcomers had used his weapon. Then the female had called out in Jaffa to halt. There was just no way to do so... until the creature created an opening. It would mean getting much too close to the other angry mob. Besides, the female of this new group was now pointing a zat at Shor'zal... and her.

They surged forward still. When they were within 5 feet, Shor'zal finally turned and fired his staff weapon at the ceiling above them. He had no great desire to kill them, other than that they were apparently trying to do the same to him. Quarters were too close for him to be effective with his staff, though, not without wholesale slaughter which could easily include him if they overran his position, which they were threatening to do.

The noise and explosion of the staff weapon's blast did get their attention, as did the shards of shattered ice that fell down upon them. The damage to the ceiling had not been great enough to collapse it or anything, nor was the falling ice much more than a nuisance. The effect, however, was to stop the angry mob.

Even the other half's attention was drawn to that noise, momentarily giving Michael a reprieve from being stabbed!

[Woooow horsey.  Before any staff weapons are fired or Michael is attacked, I've an aimed shot - Unless Zat's don't work here or he's immune....  Regardless, I intend firing the Zat and that should be show enough of 'force' for the people charging in to not attack Michael in the first place - at least, that's the plan.]

Sarah was getting more and more Nervous, especially with Michael attempt at showing force failing horribly.   She waited... and waited (and probably waited too long all things considered) before acting alone, her trigger finger prepared for the moment the Jaffa moved to aim his staff weapon....

[Single shot - Hitting on a 20 (Braced while kneeling, Aimed for several rounds, With an Action Die) for 14 damage.  Assuming it will do damage, you need to take a Fort save of 10+Damage-AbsorbedDamage or fall prone and unconscious for 27 rounds.

20:12, Today: Sarah Morgan rolled 4 using 1d4. Action Dice.
20:11, Today: Sarah Morgan rolled 13 using 1d20+4. Single shot at the Jaffa.

Regardless of her success, she has little other choice other than to turn to the oncoming hoard and shout in their language - or what she knows as similar to their language - trying to shout louder than the noise they are making, "Stop!   I am here to resolve this dispute!"

[20:30, Today: Sarah Morgan rolled 17 using 1d20+10. Diplomatic Command.

Hopefully her show of force combined with speaking their language will draw them to a hold.  Who knows... she doesn't want to shoot too!]

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

The Jaffa had halted, probably more from the unexpected appearance of the SG-X2 than because of Sarah's shouted instruction, but they happened at about the same time.

Events were happening faster than everyone expected. Sarah only had one round to aim, and when the Jaffa turned his back to her, he was able to fire the staff weapon upward before she could react and fire her zat at him.

But she fires back and the Jaffa falls to the floor.

It's unclear if Travis's martial arts effort is what freed him from the creature's brief grip or if the creature just let him go. It happend so quickly! However, it was clear that the creature had no intention of harming Travis or Michael.

The creature is half-way down the next hall before Travis's shout reaches him. He's so intent on escaping that he almost doesn't stop... but at the last second he realizes that Travis spoke his language!

He seems to speak back to Travis.

Now that he was free and the villagers had lost their attention, Michael took his Zat to fire at as many close villagers as he could. When he had enough place to move, he joined back Sarah and Travis.

He was really angry toward Sarah. He did not order to shot, especially at the Jaffa. "Sarah ! Why did you shot the Jaffa ? He was not an immediate threat." he shouted. You could see anger on his face. "And what are these people saying ?"

Travis was suggesting to leave the place and Michael agreed with him. But they could not leave the unconscious Jaffa alone. "Fox. Can you ask some help to your new friend ? He could carry the Jaffa while we cover him."

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

Sarah would deal with Alfrior when she had a moment though she made sure that she could keep a eye on Jaffa-speaking woman as she'd clearly made an enemy by shooting the Jaffa.

Of course, then Michael had to go and shoot into the mess of people ducking falling ice risking actually killing folk with multiple Zat shots.   He was probably good enough to hit what he was aiming at, but honestly, could he keep track of exactly who he'd shot?  So if Michael seemed angry at her, Sarah was livid!  "I tried to stop him making a mess of things.  He could have caved in the roof!  And your and Fox's antics aren't helping either.  They see you as allying yourself with the horned guy and they've every intention now of killing all of us!"

So with Michael shooting into the Melee and Fox completely disregarding his duty and to protect in favour of talking, Sarah waited for a moment to speak to the now halted crowd, stepping forward with confidence and once again speaking in the language of the horde, "You've seen what we can do!  Do you you think spear and javelin will have any effect on us?   No.... I claim those you hunt as my prize.  And... if you are willing, we will talk.  I have things of far greater value to trade.   Now who speaks for you!"

Of course, Sarah wasn't walking completely blindly into this exchange.  If someone in the crowd did choose to throw a javelin at her, she was read to step forward into the throw, her free hand now holding a small stone.

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

Sarah has stepped out into the center of the hallway where the angry mob is.

After the minotaur moved Michael and Travis out of his way and just around the corner, the minotaur went down the other way until Travis called for him to stop, whereupon Travis held a brief conversation with him across the 20-foot intervening space.

Michael moved back to the opening, where he'd been when the mob first threatened him. He's zapped four of the mob to clear the area a bit to prevent being stabbed and to clear the area for Sarah. He finds it a bit odd that the others haven't back off, though.

Travis is right behind Michael. After the minotaur moved him aside, it was only a few steps to get back to the opening.

This has all happened in less than a minute. The mob at the other end hasn't advanced down the hall since the Jaffa fired his staff weapon at the ceiling. They are unsure what is going on at this point.

Sarah's little speech has silenced the angry mob, but not quelled them. She can still see a touch of frenzy in their faces.

Seeing the unconscious Jaffa and considering what he did to help her, Álfríðr decided to try to move him to a safer place.
The villagers could start running over them at any time even if they seemed stopped at the moment.

She grabbed him by the arm and started to pull it. Álfríðr was not really powerful and she was more counting on her mind and her dexterity to get out of catchy situation.

This time, it was really hard for her to move the armoured warrior but she was decided to save him and after some efforts and the help from Dauði that was now trying to pull the Jaffa by drawing his chainmail with his tiny teeth, she succeeded as the body moved over a distance of about 6,5 feet.

Michael first reaction when he saw Sarah stepping over the mob was to think that she was crazy. "Sarah ! What the hell are you doing ? They could kill you. Don't be stupid and come back here."

In the same time, he saw the woman trying to move the Jaffa but it was clearly a task too hard for her. He then ordered to Travis : "Sergeant ! Ask the beast is she accept to help us to carry the Jaffa and come with me to cover and help this woman."

A short moment later, he was near the white girl and he said : "Don't worry, I'm here to help you." He was not sure if she could understand him or not but that was not important at this moment.
He grabbed one of the Jaffa's arm and started to pull him away from the villagers. With his free hand, he was pointing his Zat at the mob, ready to fire at the first man that would show any sign of threat.

The angry mob continues to mill about. They are still angry, they still want the blood... or fur... of the minotaur, and though they don't seem intimidated by Michael, they also don't have a leader. None of them seem to be of the agent provocateur inclination, so they remain confused.

When Alfrior and Michael drag the Jaffa away from them, they go back to a more threatening pose, and slowly edge forward, too. The Jaffa has no fur, but if the enemy is dragging him away, he must have value.

Both Sarah and Travis were having the same problem... trying to find or identify some sort of leader. In the current mob state, there just didn't seem to be one. In addition, no one among the mob understood Travis's words anyway.

However, upon seeing the minotaur again, the frenzy start anew. They surge forward, attacking anything that gets in their way.

If Sarah retreated at Travis's request, then only Travis is there to be attacked.

Michael may not have ever had to deal face-to-face with fanaticism, or berserkers... or a mob. He's not sure which category these people fall into, but he's not getting the response from them he was expecting. They are not intimidated by being shot.

As the minotaur picks up Shor'zal, turns around and sprints back down the exit hallway, Michael has to shoot several of the mob just to clear enough space for Sarah, Alfrior and Travis to get through. The mob isn't stopped, and continue to surge forward.

The advantage shooting them with the zat provides is that when the front ones fall down, the ones behind stumble over the bodies. With each such effort, SG-X2 gets a few more steps ahead.

Once back outside, the minotaur doesn't head for the gate.

"Follow me," he says to Travis in neo-Apache. "My people will protect us. Just keep down."

He runs around the ice castle, picks up speed as he heads for some snow piles.

The minotaur keeps up a running pace for about a mile, weaving in and out of snow drifts, rocky outcroppings and several hot springs. It quickly becomes evident that he could have tripled his speed, but he checks behind him to make sure his new allies are keeping up with him.

After the circuitous mile, he slows down, and now begins a peculiar path that doubles back on itself, crosses itself several times, and circles a couple of hot springs a few times. Finally he gestures everyone to move in a specific direction, and he follows along carefully using loose snow to cover their tracks.

After nearly another mile, this path comes to a long rocky outcropping that is almost a shallow ridge. At this point, everyone is walking on stone, presumably kept clear of snow by the nearby hotsprings.

The group comes to a large boulder which the minotaur carefully moves aside. He gestures the team inside the revealed cave. As you enter, you can see that the boulder is actually hinged; even so, it would take a concerted effort on the part of SG-X2 to swing that massive weight aside.

Once inside, the minotaur closes the 'door'.

But now, she was thinking that she should have never go on this planet full of crazy people ! One thing was sure. She will not come back here soon.

The initial cave is about 10 feet high, around 30 feet in diameter, with a single passage leading off of it.

There is no artificial light, but sunlight comes through numerous cracks to generate a kind of twilight in the cave. The solitary passage, however, looks dark.

The group had been walking for a long time before they arrived in this cave and it started to bother Álfríðr as she was getting tired.

Because there was nothing else to do during journey, she had lost herself inside her mind and she tried to understand how a girl as stupid as this blond-haired woman could be allow to take part in a mission on a planet that looked new to the strangers and, more important, why she was allowed to carry a weapon when she was clearly dangerous with them.

In the meantime, Dauði that was still in his bag, jumped on Álfríðr's shoulder and started to chew one of her ear, getting her out of her reverie.

Despite the low light coming from the cracks, Michael decided to turn the light of his P90 on to have a better appreciation of his environment.

He illuminated everyone, one after the other to check that they were good and he noticed the little creature on the white woman's shoulder.
He was tempted to get closer to stroke it a bit but finally thought that it would probably be a bad idea.

As the temperature inside the cave was more supportable, Michael removed his hood and his protection goggles to feel more comfortable.

As the leader of his team, it was not ideal to always follow a stranger but once again, he had no choice as the Minotaur was carrying the Jaffa, a Jaffa that shown himself more friendly than hostile before Sarah fired at him with her Zat.

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

While Travis had been speaking Apache with Kuruk back at the intersection with the mob, Sarah had been speaking Jaffa with the blue-haired woman and the Jaffa, though Travis may have been too preoccupied to have noticed.

Kuruk begins leading the group through the tunnel. It quickly grows darker, but just about the time the light is nearly gone, a moss or fungus on the walls and ceiling begins to glow.

The tunnel seems to twist and turn frequently, with no apparent rhyme or reason, further giving the impression of a maze. There are numerable turn-offs, as well, and a few ‘bottomless’ pits can be seen down these side passages. There is also no glowing moss down these side paths. It is unclear if this maze is a natural occurrence or ‘man’-made.

Kuruk leads on for about 20 minutes before entering a small lit cavern guarded by two minotaurs dressed in some kind of bone armor and wielding large bone weapons. These weapons appear to be a blend of club and sword—a sharpened edge but a large knob on the end. The guards immediately go into an aggressive stance until Kuruk reassures them, then they let the group pass.

Passing through another opening in this cavern, the group now enters a huge cavern nearly 300 feet across with a domed ceiling 100 feet high. Light enters this cavern through fissures in the ceiling.

At least 100 minotaurs can be seen in the cavern, including females and young. Around the perimeter, there are numerous niches carved into the walls. A half dozen openings can also be seen.

 Nascha’atay,” Kuruk says to Travis.

The floor of the cavern is 10 steps down, and Kuruk walks down the stairs and over to the nearest niche. He sets the Jaffa down gently in the niche, stands up and turns around.

he calls out across the cavern.

Álfríðr was surprised to hear someone else speaking Jaffa in the strangers group. From the moment when they met, only the woman tried to speak with her in this language. But she did not say more about her because she tried to keep secret her origins and the way she could have learned this language.

During the walk in the maze, she answered to Travis that she known how to speak Jaffa but that she was unable to understand the language they used to speak with each others.

When they arrived inside the huge cavern, she was happy to finally be able to stop walking. She gone blank when she saw that many Minotaurs in the cave. As they seem to be the prey of the crazy people from the Ice Castle, she never thought that they could be so numerous.

When the sock was passed, she started to scrutinize the vicinity in search for any valuable items that she could eventually steal.

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

When they was in what looked like a maze, Michael tried to mentally create a map of the path they were taking. But as they were walking, it was getting clearer that it would be impossible to use this path without a guide if they wanted to leave the place.

On their way, he tried to lit some of the bottomless pit with his P90 light but he was unable to see the bottom of any of them. Falling in such a hole would be a trip without any way to come back he thought.

When they finally arrived in the first part of the cave, he was surprised to see armed and armoured guards. These Minotaurs were more advanced than he first thought and if they had to fight against them, it would be even harder than he initially thought to defeat them.
Well. It would be impossible he then thought when they entered in the huge cave and he saw the complete group of Minotaurs. He was not sure about their number but they were at least 100. And they were only 6, counting the strange woman and the unconscious Jaffa.

After Travis relayed what Kuruk said, Michael finally gave his orders. "Fox. Tell him that we are explorers and we came in peace."
He looked around him and started to evaluate the real number of Minotaurs, if ever it was possible, and tried to memorized all the possible ways out in case things went wrong. "Also Sergeant, try to look for any suspicious act from our new friends." he finally added.

Sarah remained silent.  None of this was allying her fears though she was not leading this mission.  As such she quietly considering the events as they'd unfolded, noticed Travis' butterfly-like distraction from his focus on the creature to talk to (and be rebutted by) Alfrior, and considered the woman's earlier words.  Had she an accent?  Was Sarah able to place it?

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

Most people don't think they have an accent when they speak a foreign language, but unless they make a point of eliminating it, there is almost always at least a trace of your native language that creeps in, especially when you get emotional.

It's easy enough for Sarah to detect such an accent in Alfrior's speech, but it's a lot harder to identify it. As it turns out, she doesn't think it's a xeno-language at all, but an Earth language. She can't be absolutely positive, but the faint accent sounds vaguely Scandinavian.

About the time she's considering Alfrior's accent, the Jaffa wakes up. He still clutched his staff weapon in his hand, so Kuruk had carried it along with the Jaffa, and then set it down beside him in the niche.

Unliked most people felled by a zat, Shor'zal did not wake up groggy or disoriented. His symbiote took care of that. Once his muscles and senses were fully restored, he just sat up, fully conscious and alert.

His hand instinctivel reached out to grasp his staff weapon, which, fortunately, was by his side. However, he still had no idea where he was or how he'd gotten here.

He was surprised, though not really shocked, to see so many of the giant horned furballs. A moment later, he spotted the blue-haired woman he'd helped... and the other woman who'd shot him!

Had he still been the Jaffa that he'd been, he most assuredly would have retaliated. He was not that same Jaffa any more. He knew the Goa'uld were false gods, and now understood why other races hated Jaffa.

He stood up slowly, but left the staff weapon on the stone platform that had served as a bed for him. Equally slowly, he walked towards the woman who'd shot him.

"I apologize if I have offended you any way," he said to Sarah. "If I may ask, why did you shoot me with your zat'nik'tel?"

Sarah was still pondering the woman's accent when the Jaffa spoke up and Sarah suddenly realised that their leader hadn't taken the initiative and disarmed the obvious threat, Can he do nothing right?  Why on earth did the general give him leadership of this team!  She was therefore immediately wary but, given that her commander had chosen to leave the man with his staff weapon, polite.  Spoken in Jaffa, "Because you were raising your weapon, Jaffa.  The fact that you've been left with yours is still of some concern, so please keep it lowered."  The implied 'or I might have to shoot you again' as simple threat even for one who did not at all appear to be war-like.   That all being said, she did hit him!  So why hasn't he attacked?  Retaliated?  He is no fool and must be better trained than some, or maybe on a mission that overrides his natural tendencies.  Attacking while outnumbered would surely end such a mission.

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

Michael felt like he was starting to get whiplash from turning his head first one way and then the other trying to keep track of two conversations, neither of which he could understand.

At heart, he was a soldier, and while he wasn't one of those combat machines, he functioned best against an enemy... at least one that he recognized and understood. Here, he wasn't even sure there was an enemy, though the actions of the villagers was... peculiar. Seemed like a negotiation problem, not a military one.

He understood Sarah's desire to do those negotiations, but he'd felt the 'angry villager' rule was in play. It was very hard to negotiate with someone who was determined to stick a pitchfork in you!

Now that everyone was safe, he could patiently wait for Travis and Sarah to translate for him. He didn't need instant, immediate translation, but it was hard to plan without intel.

If Sarah had a fault, it was that she was too impulsive. If she'd bothered reading the Jaffa's body language, she'd have realized he wasn't the threat that she thought he was. Teal'c had proven that not all Jaffa were 'the enemy'. Context was also important. She was probably quite good at reading people across the negotiating table but she didn't have the military training for assessing people in combat situations.

Michael just didn't see any reason for this mission to continue. It's a big planet, and there could be hundreds of other cultures on it, but unless there was more than one gate, they weren't equipped for long range exploration. Although unspecified, there was a de facto mandate that the team explore the culture and technology near the gate. If there were indications of something beyond that range--roughly a 20-mile perimeter, then subsequent teams would be sent that were better equipped for it.

He laughed inwardly at those thoughts. As the team leader, he'd undergone extensive training; he was mildly amused that most of it seemed to have stuck.

"Travis," he said when there was a momentary lull in their conversation, "see if there is anything we can do to help these... um, minotaurs. In fact, ask them if they know what a minotaur is."

He then turned to Sarah, with more or less the same request.

"Sarah, see if this... Shor'zal..." he hoped he correctly picked the Jaffa's name out of the conversation... "and the woman need our assistance. We are willing to escort them to the gate, if that is what they wish."

Fox considers "so the language is the standard one for your people?"

"It is a little strange this, let me tell you what I know". "Your people are mentioned in ancient History by a race called the Greeks". "In that history there is only one, clearly that is a twisted tale."

The term Minotaur derives from the Ancient Greek Μῑνώταυρος, a compound of the name Μίνως (Minos) and the noun ταύρος "bull", translated as "(the) Bull of Minos". In Crete, the Minotaur was known by its proper name, Asterion.
Fox thinks for a moment, then asks
"So this balance has existed for how long"?

"Let me talk to the commander and see if we can find a way of achieving peaceful co existence for both races"

"My first contact with the inhabitants was when a native woman suddenly drew a dagger and attacked the blue-haired woman. Moments later, the angry inhabitants arrived, clearly pursuing her. Had it been just one person, I would have intervened in an effort to keep the peace. Instead, I indicated to her that I could help her escape, as I marked the path I took."

"That was when we ran into you and your comrades. So, as you can see, we have not exchanged names yet."

If these were indeed the fabled Tau'ri--and he was becoming more and more certain of that, then prevaricating or holding out information would not be in his best interests as he wished to join them.

He did not know the full details of how they got the Prime Teal'c to join them, but that was an ability the Goa'uld possessed. And if they really did destroy Ra, then they were potent and powerful allies.

The false gods had tried to make it a name of shame, but Shor'zal had come to recognize it as a badge of honor. He'd also realized that the problem with the entire Goa'uld system was that slaves weren't very useful if they couldn't think, but if they could, then sooner or later one or more of them would realize the Goa'uld weren't truly gods at all.

If he seemed to stand a bit taller, it was those thoughts running through his head that made him do so, as he replied to Sarah.

"I am Shol'va! My brethren were hunting me when they shot down my death glider. It crashed near the gate and I fled through it. I seem to have misdialed in my haste, and wound up here."

"I do not know where this place is. I have never seen that control device before."

He knew that Apophis's First Prime, Teal'c, had become a shol'va, but he did not think that alone would impress the Tau'ri. After all, it was just a word.

"Loyalty is earned and deserved," Shor'zal replies. "I would be a traitor if the Goa'uld were the gods they claimed to be. They are not. They are false gods. They deserve no loyalty for their deception."

Having finally gotten a positive (or at least not negative) response from this Tau'ri woman, he felt it was the opening he needed.

"I do not know if gods are infallible, though they would seem to want you to believe that. The Goa'uld were petty and cruel, often performing unwise acts. They tried to condition us Jaffa into accepting that this was alright as long as it wasn't directed at us. Yet, for the smallest of transgressions, it was."

"They would want us not to feel, but we do--how else could we be loyal to them? When those feelings are put to the test, when a friend is horrifically tortured to death for a minor error, it is the Goa'uld who come up short."

"When we learned that Apophis's First Prime, Teal'c, became shol'va, most Jaffa were outraged. A few, however, wondered how this could be, though in our hearts I think we knew."

"It was also learned that it was the Tau'ri that destroyed Ra, not Apophis, as he claimed. If only one god could kill another, did that not make the Tau'ri godlike?"

"All these things convinced me that the Goa'uld were false gods, not gods at all, but parasites that preyed on Jaffa and humans. I had not even expressed these thoughts, yet the others knew. That is why they tried to kill me. They did not succeed. I have a warrior's heart, fueled now by freedom!"

"As Teal'c has done, I wish to give my services to the Tau'ri, to free my people, avenge the fallen, and bring down the false gods!"

After hearing Travis's translation, Michael quickly realized that his team was not in a position to broker any kind of peace treaty. Of course, Sarah thought she could do this if given a chance, but perhaps he was looking at the situation with a more jaundiced eye.

There seemed to be more going on here than just one group angry with another. Even if the minotaurs had done something so outrageously horrific to the villagers, he just could not see their reaction as being reasonable, especially to such an extreme.

He felt it would take weeks for someone to reach an understanding with the villagers, and even then he honestly believed that the instant the two species came in contact, the villagers would go berserk again.

He couldn't quite say why, but he felt this was like the Broca Divide incident with Colonel O'Neill.

He turned to Travis.

"Tell Kuruk that we wish to establish trade with his people. I do not know what we have that they might want, but perhaps knives, food, medicine, tents or domes... We have no intention of providing weapons, but then I don't think they would want them anyway."

"In return, we only desire knowledge... whatever they are able to provide. We'd like to study them, as well... learn their language, their culture, their customs, their history. It may not sound like much to him, but tell him we are seekers of knowledge."

"Also, give him my spare radio, and explain how it works. We will send a new team through in several days, perhaps longer, to work out the trade details... a chief talking with a chief."

He waited for Travis to relay all that to Kuruk, and then addressed all of them.

"It's time to head back to the gate. Tell Shor'zal and Alfrior that we will escort them to the gate if they wish."

"Sarah, explain to Shor'zal that he is welcome to return with us. Warn him, however, that he will be detained but treated with respect. I'm sure he understands that we don't quite trust Jaffa yet."

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

"Loyalty certainly is earned, Shor'zal."  She pauses, pursing her lips.  "And because of this I'm sure you'll understand when I say that your words, while well spoken, will need to prove their worth.  It would be remiss of us," she is clearly referring to the Tau'ri here, "to simply assume the truth in the face of the cunning shown by the system lords?"

She pauses to make sure he understands this before adding.  "If you wish, you may accompany us to the Chappa'ai where you will be detained to ensure that you represent no hidden threat to us.  As I said, the system lords are cunning and I would not put it past them to use your new change in attitude towards them - as a weapon against us."

She then turns to reticent woman and offers her the same option should she wish to accompany them to the gate.

Nodding then to Michael, "I've explained this - he seems honest, but you know as well as I do that he might still represent a threat."

In reply to Michael Galamore (msg # 113):

He turned to Travis.

"Tell Kuruk that we wish to establish trade with his people. I do not know what we have that they might want, but perhaps knives, food, medicine, tents or domes... We have no intention of providing weapons, but then I don't think they would want them anyway."

He waited for Travis to relay all that to Kuruk, and then addressed all of them.

Fox "Sir for the radio to work they will need the earth dial code at the Star gate".

Fox turns back to Kuruk, "My commander seems to think we need to go back and report". "With his say so and so you can keep in contact if you wish to we will leave you a radio". "If you go to the star gate and dial in this sequence it will get earth, and you will be able to speak to us or some one will get a message to us."
"Do not try to cross to earth with out say so".
"You would not live through the encounter, I would like to leave you a gift from my self, it has been good to find some one out here among the stars, that speaks the Apache language, even if I do not understand why".

Fox hands Kuruk his Chris Cain survival tool

"We will get a team here to talk to the Mad ones and try to help settle that problem for you, and hopefully set a contact up between here and earth"

Fox bows, " I am sorry to leave so soon, but my commander has spoken his will, and I must obey".
"Would you show us the way to the gate".
"Please excuse me a moment."

Fox Steps over to the Jaffa.

"Jaffa I am sorry as yet I do not have the name to know you by".
"I am Master Sgt Travis Fox warrior of the Taur'i, please keep your weapon until we get to the gate." "Then I will have to ask for it's surrender until you are cleared by those in command.

He turns to the women, "the same will stand for you as well I am afraid."
"We are not trying to be rude or unpleasant just being careful"

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

"I hadn't meant for them to contact us," the Major replied to Travis, "only that we had a way to contact them when a team returned. But, that was a good idea. If they have a problem and need help, they can contact us."

"It shows a certain amount of trust and good faith. Well done, Travis."

He waited until that was all said and done, but he kept casting glances at the blue-haired woman. He'd always liked small furry animals, and he was almost as fascinated by her little pet as he was by her.

I wonder what her world is like. Maybe I could get a pet like hers. Hahaha... wouldn't the General be surprised if I brought one back! Hope it's not like a Tribble.

"Okay, let's move out," he finally said, hoping that Kuruk would, indeed, lead them out.

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

After the exchanges were made, Kuruk agreed to lead them out of the labyrinth and to the gate. Whether it was intentional or not, Kuruk leads them out a different way, though it does seem like a shorter trip to the gate.

There are no signs of the ice villagers, but everyone can't help noting that there is more smoke coming from ice castle. Of course, they have no way of knowing what that means, but it does seem ominous.

Not wanting to leave Alfrior here by herself in case the angry villagers did show up, Michael offered to let her use the gate first.

She refuses, and Sarah is able to determine that she doesn't trust the SG-X2 team, including the Jaffa, so she doesn't want them to know her home planet's address.

After pondering the situation for a minute, Michael suggests that SG-X2 goes through the gate, he'll stay here with Alfior to protect her, and then he'll go through with her... to study her world.

Nobody actually seems happy with this, but a better solution doesn't present itself.

So the gate is dialed, the code transmitted, and Travis, Sarah, and Shor'zal go through the gate. At the last moment before it closed, Michael transmits his request for an extended leave of absence and his reasons and intentions. As planned, there isn't time for General Hammond to protest, deny his request or attempt to talk him out of it.

Once the gate closes, Michael turns his back on the gate and DHD while Alfrior dials her homeworld. Then he joins her and they both step through.

The gate once again closes on a bleak, desolate, snow-covered and mostly silent landscape.

Before Travis goes through the gate, though, Michael says, "There's nothing you can say to command," Michael replies to Travis, "that I won't communicate over the radio when the gate is open. It's been an honor serving with you, Sergeant. Maybe we'll get a chance again sometime."

Then he says to Sarah, "Even if we haven't always seen eye-to-eye, it's been a pleasure serving with you, Ms. Morgan. Who knows... our paths may cross again."

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

Upon reaching the gate, Shor'zal hands his staff weapon over to Travis.

Travis would be the one to go through first, then Shor'zal, and then Sarah. With the SGC notified of an incoming Jaffa, they'll have guards ready in the gate room, and Travis has already seen how trigger-happy Sarah is with Jaffa. Plus Michael is still there.

Fox bows slightly as he takes the weapon.
"I think that once Command is satisfied you will get this back Shor'zal. Certainly Teal'c carries his in combat need".
"It is more I would not want you shot for no reason before you have a chance to have your say.
Is there any thing else you are carrying that I need to know about and have given me"?

Re: XBN-81N: Ice Planet Zebra

Yet again, Travis interrupted her, this time interrupting her conversation with the Jaffar.  A pity really as she had been getting to the nitty gritty of the conversation and it had allowed Shor'zal to avoid answering her.

With her progress destroyed and Travis inept (And dare I say bluntly rude) blundering noted for her report, she quietly followed the group back to the gate, wondered in passing about what secrets might be hidden by the 'modified' DHD, and is then stopped by Michael's choice to remain behind.   The choice is shocking one and she is yet again flummoxed by the men in her team who seem to insist on destroying any semblance of team cohesion.  It is however his choice and despite all that has happened, he is still their commander, "Best of luck, Michael."

With that said and unwilling to let things drag on, she stepped through the stargate to returned home.
