Re: X2U-238: Shot in the Dark 2

The controls seems well designed and seem pretty easy for the uninitiated to grasp - always a good sign.  "Hey... If I'm reading this right, and I think I am, the radiation level outside seems rather high.   I'm not expert though.   What do you think?"  She point out the odd discrepancy she's spotted in the readings.  Maybe one of the scientists can decipher them?

Re: X2U-238: Shot in the Dark 2

"I see what you mean, Sarah," Gavan responds.

"Although it's about the same, it's a little lower here in the base than on the planet. I would think that means the base is heavily shielded, probably against attack as well as standard background radiation in space."

"The planet's magnetic field and atmosphere provide its shielding. The moon doesn't have either of those, and the Alterants apparently didn't see any reason to shield the whole moon."

"I suppose if the Goa'uld or someone else were capable of destroying the whole moon, wouldn't have been much point protecting it from radiation. And, presumably, they had some means of escape."

"Well, now we know that this symbol here is what they use to indicate temperature. Based on the visible scale, I'd say it's Kelvin."

"Say... have you found a route to the computer's base operating system? It just occurred to me that they might have had a routine to switch the OS over to a different language. It wouldn't be automatic... in case you had two or more people speaking different languages at the same time. Whether they would have English as one seems a bit absurd, since English as a language probably didn't even exist when this facility was built."

"And the last thing it would be able to do is switch to Goa'uld... unless it was announcing the countdown to self-destruct. But, just maybe, there's another language in there that you know."

"I've learned a few languages, but I'm not a student of the history of them. How far back a language goes would be beyond my knowledge."

Lucky nodded as Hilda’s guess made sense. “Sounds like we have a bet then. The door is yours, milady.” He smirked and motioned towards the door with a wave of his hand

While Sarah was a linguist, she wasn't a complete slouch when it came to computers despite not grasping the intricacies the science at hand.   At Gavin's suggestions she replies, "It's not my forte, but I'll give it a try, Gavin."   And attempts to do just that, search for a means of accessing the base operating system, while avoiding triggering any alarm bells... so to speak.

Re: X2U-238: Shot in the Dark 2

Hilda opens the next door... three doors down, actually, since the first two opened into the same room as the first one.

At first, Hilda has no idea what the function of this room is. It is a long room, too, though not as long as the other one, but long enough to have two doors. There are four beds, one along each of the side walls and two across the back, and there is a desk against the front wall between the two doors. Above the desk are cabinets and shelves. Between the two back beds is another floor-to-ceiling cabinet. The beds appear slightly elevated, perhaps meant for tall people.

She caught a flash of the lights coming on as she opened the door, indicating that it had apparently been dark... since it wasn't occupied.

Then she realizes why there's a vague familiarity to the room--it has a simplified look of the SGC medical bay.

Meanwhile, Sarah has managed to find the base operating system for the control room. She's not into the hard code for it, assuming there is such a thing, but into a root directory/menu.

One of the entries is Language Setting, so apparently the Alterants were expecting someone else to be able to take control of the facility at some point. One of them seems to be Mayan; it doesn't actually say that, but that's the symbology displayed. As it is, no one is quite sure what the Mayans actually called their language. There wasn't as much cultural interaction in the Americas for the distinction between languages had to be made like it did in Europe. As near as anyone has been able to determine, the Mayans spoke 'Language' and everyone else spoke 'garbage'. She can also switch to Asgard or (she thinks) Furling.

Sarah is able to switch the displays over to Mayan, and almost laughs when she realizes that there isn't much change. After all, the Mayans wouldn't have had any symbols for a lot of the technical data. Temperature, for instance, would have just been 'warm, hot, very hot'.

However, Sarah is also able to activate voice protocols if she wishes, which means she can talk to the computer.

Chuckling to herself and shakes her head as the Mayan option before flicking it to Asgardian, "I've got it...."  She can speak that language too and at least one other person in the group would benefit from that change.  On a bigger plus, Asgard would certain have translations for the more technical terms and she'd not have to guess.  "Freyda.   Take a look at this?  I've managed to flick the display to Ardgardian.  Can you interface with it?"

She then continues, speaking Asgard, "Show me logs of the the last 100 users actions on this platform, please."

Entering the room, Hilda looked around, first one way and then the other. 'A medical bay.' she decided, almost disappointed not to find a photocopier, and sighed to Lucky 'So, how does the bet go if we're both wrong?'

Regardless, she wandered into the room and tried to look inside the cabinets and on the shelves over the desk by the door.

Re: X2U-238: Shot in the Dark 2

The computer begins displaying the last 100 actions. The most recent one is tagged as occurring 637 years ago. It was: [voice] Initiate standby shutdown in 5 minutes.

Next one was: [voice] Activate passive defense.

Next one was: [voice] Activate Overwatch.

And there was a long list.

Hilda has no problem opening the cabinets as there don't appear to be any locks on them. There are typical supplies in the cabinets... bandages, spray bottles, spray cans, and a few things she can't readily identify.

"Interesting.... look at this."  She pauses and once again speaks to the computer in Asgard, "Describe the functions of Overwatch" and assuming it responds she'll add the same for 'Passive Defence'.   of course, if it struggles with her voice commands she'll type in similar to find out what she can of the two actions.

Further, she'll ask the computer to replay those voice commands - so she can hear who spoke it and what language they were using.  And she'll ask the computer to display the details of the individual who issued those commands - a personnel file if it is available.

"Looks like it. Should check it out closely, could find some good stuff in here for back home." Lucas said with a nod of agreement. "I think a tie means double or nothing next time. But I'm sure the majors will encourage cross training anyways in case we ever run into hostiles."

He took the other side of the room, and began checking as well

'If we ever run into hostiles.' the Viking sighed dramatically, longing for glorious battle or anything interesting in this strange empty place. 'Okay, the next room, we make the same guesses.'

Closing the door of the last cabinet, Hilda came over to see what Lucky had found. 'Everything looks to me like what Doctor Frasier has in her infirmary. Only she could say if any of it is good stuff.'

Re: X2U-238: Shot in the Dark 2

The computer responds to Sarah's questions, explaining first what Overwatch is and then what Passive Defense is.

Overwatch is system surveillance for the star and planets and moons. It's capable of shutting down any or all henges if a potential threat is detected. Apparently there are also weapons somewhere and a 'stealth' status that can be activated.

Passive Defense is the hologram out in the lobby and a device that alters emotions... generating whatever emotion is apt to make unwanted visitors leave. Passive defense means the system will not harm any living creature.

"Yeah, same on this side. You would think they would have some advanced medical supplies. Spray on band aids or hand held body scanners or something. Maybe Dr. Morgan or Maj. Gorski will want to take a second look for anything worth toting back to command." Lucky replied, closing the last drawer. "Standing bets works for me. Don't get too upset things are quiet here, the last thing we need to do is find out if that hologram we ran into earlier has anything to back it up. Or worse, we punch a hole in the wall and get to find out what it's like outside."

Interesting.  "Computer... what is your name?"   She looks to the systems to see what moving to stealth mode might entail and ensures that passive mode (rather than active) defences are locked in.  Further, if she's able to, she'll get the computer to identify the individuals in the team as non-threatening.

Re: X2U-238: Shot in the Dark 2

"This computer has no name or designation. Its sequence number is YV6345789," the computer responds to  Sarah.

She has no problem calling up the internal security screen, having it scan the base for life forms (which shows only the team), and identifies everyone by species (Gavan and Hilda register as Human (variant)). Sarah then directs the computer to designate all the members of the team as 'non-threatening'.

As Hilda and Lucky move to the next door along the balcony and make guesses as to what will be behind it, it finally sinks in to both of them, for slightly different reasons, that while all the items in the medical bay were familiar, they were simplistically familiar. There should have been something a little more... advanced. It was the things that they didn't find that made them realize that there were blank spots on the shelves where such equipment would have been likely to sit. There were no thermometers, no blood pressure cuffs, no oxygen sensors, no stethoscopes, no syringes...

It's possible that when the Alterants left the base, they took all tech items with them.

Re: X2U-238: Shot in the Dark 2

Just because Sarah was able to get the Alterant computer to recognize the team as friendlies didn't mean something wouldn't pop out of the woodwork, so Tate moved a few steps away from the door to the command room and kept a watch back the way they'd come.

Most of this tech stuff was way over his head... and his pay grade!

"So, what are we trying to accomplish now?" he called back to Kaspar.

Then, as an afterthought, he called out to Sarah.

"Hey, Sarah! Any chance of getting technical specs out of that computer?"

"YV6345789... eh... Computer, I'd like to call you Eevee from now on."  She smiled at that.  "Eevee.  I'm Sarah.   What happened to the previous occupants?"

When Tate calls to her asking for tech specs she'll call back, "Sure, Tate.  What specifically are you looking for?"  She's pretty sure he isn't looking for an alarm clock so will wait to hear what he's after, ask Eevee, and then translate and relay the response.

'But we did find out what it's like outside,' Hilda observed, 'When we were out there. Cold and dusty and grey.'

She had a last look around the infirmary. Where she was from, bandages and sprays were advanced technology, but she could soon tell what was missing from this place. 'No screens, no heart-listeners... This place is much bigger than Doctor Frasier's infirmary, but it does not even have all that she has. Maybe others have already looted this place of its treasures and technology. Maybe the Alterans, or others who came after.' the Cimmerian mused.
