Downtime plans

We have had a bit of discussion about downtime businesses ..

Berta was talking about a brewery - that finished up as an Inn that provided accommodation for us. Wyn was talking about about a shrine as part of his religious 'tithe'.

However, if we were to set up a Travelers Hostel -  that could meet both needs.  Aiming it at Travelers means it could meet a religious need (as Wyn goddess is also patron of travelers) as well as giving us somewhere to live that incorporates a bar :)

Fiddling with the downtime buildings and rooms rules (I enjoy this sort of stuff) we could put together a basic set of

Bar -  250gp (a room for socializing where  serves drinks)
Kitchen - 160gp (preparation and storage of food.
Lavatory - 120gp (for the obvious purposes)
Lodgings - 430gp (10x small, single, rooms for accommodation)

= 960gp

As far as I recall, businesses come with commoners to do the work (although probably a bit more competent than the lad in The White Dragon) and generate an income.

If we were to take 1 room each -  we  have 7 left.  We might want to give over 2 for 'live in' staff so that there is someone in the building over night while we are away (and might discourage the GM from breaking into it regularly)

Which leaves a working bar and kitchen with 5 letting rooms :)  I will play with the maths at some point, but I suspect we could be living rent free ...

Re: Downtime plans

I'm in !!  :>

I think Gedd was really after a masterwork weapon - whereas Berta managed that along with the rest of her gear in character build, albeit all but wiping out her coin in the process ...

But I'm certainly not worried about dividing everything by 3 (hey, we're family) - am happy to put most if not all of the proceeds from our current employment into the venture, so if Gedd puts in less this time and Berta puts in more, pas de problem.  We'll all be relying on Wyn for free entertainment, anyway ! <grins>

Probably could do with a separate room for a shrine or somesuch ?  Another 250 GP ?  And maybe another 6 rooms (43GP x 6 = 258 GP ???)  My thinking is that would give 16 rooms - 3 for us and 3 for staff - cook, barman, bouncer/everything else ...

... on the premise that we need a few NPC characters ourselves if the GM wants to open up our tavern for PC visitors ?  Anyone have preferences for the above ?  I'm happy to take what's left.  :>

Re: Downtime plans

Wyn has enough money to buy it now  :)  Although we don't get down time yet.

And I was thinking of using it as a starting point.  For the time being just have an Icon of the goddess on the wall so that travelers can give her thanks they found a safe place to stay, and perhaps a motivational text framed on another wall ...

If we start out small, we can add bits as we go along  (especially if we check on local land / space beforehand)  That way, we have an ongoing down time project with two aspects.

First we have a building development plan, which gives us some downtime RP if we are hanging around for other parties to comeback and reform.

Second, it gives us something functional to start with, that we might be able to use for downtime RP -  of just gives us somewhere to hang out if we need a quiet place away from O'Malleys.

?Third? - it gives us a 'play with the decorating' type thread as we build a home/business.

Re: Downtime plans

When Gedd mentioned a masterwork weapon and a couple of months accommodation at O'Malleys he was just trying to put the offered 700gp into perspective, since magic gear probably isn't available to buy. I did manage a masterwork longsword among the equipment he has started with. I don't really know what he would spend his money on yet.

But as O'Malley told us, "A bed in the common room will run you two gold a night.  A private room is five." A that rate a private room would chew through your 960gp in about 6.4 months. Your hostel certainly sounds like a very sound investment, as long as (a) we live that long and (b) the game continues long enough to cover those costs. ;o)

You can count Gedd in, too. I'm sure he can organise someone who can brew a beverage to rival Poacher's Pale, as well!  :o)

Anything other than l1 Commoners costs more money :)  But a team of three L4 experts costs 200gp (after that they have no running costs)

Experts are allowed to have crafts or professions ..  so  Profession Cook, Profession Innkeeper and (a new one I have just invented) Profession Doorman.

Bags I the huge female expert doorman.

Ohh, Ohh ooh -  or the mad chinese chef with a cleaver.

ROFL - in Fantasy terms, we just make him/her human and inscrutable: ie speaking a language that NOBODY else understands - except the Innkeeper NPC - someone had to hire the cook and pass along meal orders ! ;>

Although, for continuity (if/when our chars bite the dust), it'd be a thought to have the next PC come from our staff at the Inn - they move up, another NPC moves in ?  Or perhaps we're thinking cousins from our home town with whom we shared childhood and hitherto unmentioned adventures ?  Of course it's probably better if we don't die ... <grins>

Re: Downtime plans

Well, I could probably put in a good word with the death goddess ...

Although when we get to the appropriate time to build, and negotiate with the DM, it might be a good idea to see what his views on death and replacement characters are.
