Re: OOC (Clarifications and Wonderful Neepery, Part the Third)
If only you'd read the next book, Vampire Science.
The Eight Doctors kind of killed the line right out of the gate. Terrance Dicks is normally at least reliable, but that was very poor and childish. I guess editors were expecting them to be more like children's books than the previous adult New Adventures, which came as a shock to the fans. The Eight Doctors would probably have fit in well the current NSAs however.
Things picked up a lot with Vampire Science, then War of the Daleks killed the range again a few books later with its needless and overcomplicated retconning the destruction of Skaro. Finally, Alien Bodies came along as a vast improvement, introducing the Time War that we're basically still dealing with, but by then it seems the fandom at large wasn't interested. The books remained fairly good, then the Time War came and ate the series, then the authors made periodic attempts to go cold-turkey on the fanwank (destroying Gallifrey so we can't go back there; giving the Doctor amnesia so he doesn't know everything), only to then binge on it.
Okay, I'm probably not selling them too well here. :) There are good and decent books there, and some turkeys as usual, but the overall direction of the range was haphazard.
Ironically, the new series would spend all its time both ignoring the EDAs and ripping them off for the Time War.
