Not in a gigantic hurry. Once everyone has their sheet finished or at least near finished we will start.

Re: OOC thread

Just curious...why not human? Anyone who plays with me knows I am almost always a warrior human type, perhaps I am just a poor roleplayer or maybe my range of roleplaying is limited?

For some reason I do not really enjoy playing non-human characters, wonder why that is?

Re: OOC thread

Good question. I dunno. I tend not to play non-humans myself in games that have multiple races. When I first started gaming I did. My first RPG character was a Dwarf (AD&D, of course). Since then I think Fernao and a Halfling I created about six years ago are the only non-humans I've played in the last ten years or so.

For me it's a matter of inspiration. For this game I knew I wanted to play a character different than others I'm currently playing. A big, bluff warrior type was my first thought and thought of a blustering Porthos from the Three Musketeers type might be a way into that. Looking through the races in Atlantis I spied the Taurans and these reminded me that growing up Ferdinand the Bull was a favorite book of my little brother's. Something tells me that if I hadn't remembered Ferdinand I may have gone back to playing a Human.

Re: OOC thread

In reply to Fernao (msg # 7):

In a lot of games, Humans are a default and that probably leads to some of it. Humans in Atlantis though get their own set of bonuses that really do come into play. With the ability to re-roll (or force re-rolls) and spend Hero Points, a determined Human Hero is going to get things done.

Re: OOC thread

My characters are always somewhat like a version of me, showing some side of my actual personality usually. So I am almost always a human in my games. I was tempted to play a Tauran though.

I am going with a tentative first game post on Sunday. Don't worry if you are not done with your characters, this will be a 99% roleplaying thread/

Re: OOC thread

I rarely play a human.  I am one in real life, so what's the point in sticking with being boring!

However, I will admit that since I'm quite homely and a bit awkward in real life, playing someone attractive and less bumbling is terribly fun. *laugh*

Re: OOC thread

I'm writing this quickly, because I've got other things I probably ought to be doing, but I wanted to dash some thoughts that occurred to me about this stuff, so forgive me if my grammar fades in and out here...

It has occurred to me why my interest in playing non-humans has waned over the years. See, I've been playing rpgs for a rather long time. No. Really. I'm 47 today and discovered AD&D, et al. when I was 13 or 14.

There was a point just after High School when I was trying to figure out what I was going to do and the things that seemed most interesting also seemed the most difficult (so I did the logical thing and ran away) a thought occurred to me: it doesn't matter whether I get an interesting job or actually 'Do' anything, because I've got rpgs. I can do whatever, be whatever I'd like in them. So, I can get a shit job and just get on with things, because I'll always have this outlet.

In the 20 or so years since then I'm pleased to say that I've actually managed to 'Do' some things in my career and life, go figure. That is, I didn't actually let myself live the life I wanted through my gaming while I trundled through things. I did, however, use my gaming to test out approaches to various problems and opportunities. The characters I've played at certain times in my life I don't think I could play today, because I'm not that person any more. Or perhaps it's more accurate to say that I could play those characters, but I'd play them differently.

Now, saying this I do mean to say that I've done this with every character I've ever created. Nor have I done it consistently when I've been playing a given character during one of those times when I was actively using rpging as a means to figuring out how to do whatever it was that I figuring out how to do. It does mean, though, that today I'm am far less interested in playing characters much younger than I am or that are non-human. (I've also never really played female characters and I think that this also reflects the very personal nature of my approach to gaming.)

So, yeah, while I play because I like games and I like the improv nature, etc. of rpgs that I've been able to use them to figure how to best 'play' myself in the real world has probably resulted in my characters becoming more and more like me, even if they are better looking, smarter, stronger, more highly skilled, etc. than I actually am.

Re: OOC thread

erm... Crap. I just realized that I totally screwed my post up by confusing Nkruma and Brude. (Does this make me a racist? No. It makes me stupid.)

The thing is that while Fernao is also stupid, he's not quite that stupid.

I'm going to edit my post to fix and apologize for the error!

Re: OOC thread

To add in some thoughts on the old thread about non-humans, I find it depends a lot on what type of non-humans are available. Something non-standard seems interesting (to me like the ones in Atlantis as opposed to the standard elves, dwarfs, hobbits, etc).

Re: OOC thread

We have some really good roleplayers in this group, pretty excited to see how things play out. It is a meeting of my Tal worlds and D&D world meeting on 3rd party ground...Atlantis. We are just waiting on our last player to make his appearance in the tavern and then we will move on.

Re: OOC thread

Woo!

We have a job, we have a destination, we have a crew of brave, fine, fearless folk!

Let's get this party started!

Also, I'll be out of town Thursday through Monday. Should have internet, but should also be stuck on tablet where typing is a pain. Will do my best to keep abreast of things and update when I can.

Hey hey folks.

I don't think it's been said in game what day/month it is. Since our beloved GM is away, do you all want to brainstorm about it?

Summer, Winter? Fall, Spring?

So, should we congratulate you on having your trip cancelled? Or commiserate?

Also, cool about spring. I'll have a post later today (after some other Atlantis writing gets done).

Commiserate for sure. I was taking place in a longsweord tournament and a knife tournament on Saturday and teaching French Savate and Russian fisticuffs on Sunday...would have been a blast but the cold winds of Boreas thought otherwise.

Yes. Sorry to hear about the travel issues and hopefully it can get rescheduled.

And glad you could get out of Chicago...seems to be way too easy to get stuck there...particularly when trying to get out of town away from the in-laws.
