Ritual and Error

Though Judoc still bears an intense animosity toward Loke for the latter's public humiliation and torture of Judoc weeks ago, the young mage grudgingly respects the Templar's magical knowledge and power, and he does his best to dampen his personal loathing as much as he can.  Judoc can still learn from Loke, insufferable though the man may be.

As Loke describes the process of ceremonial magic, Judoc listens intently, doing his best to commit every detail to memory.  This surely is the key to Resurrection, else how could the spell ever be powered?  A group of healers working together could cast the spell, though the cost would still be incredibly draining, which is why Resurrection was so rarely used.  Either a ring or a powerstone, anyway, but such a powerstone would require immense resources to manufacture and take forever to recharge.

Judoc imagines himself at the head of such a circle of mages, hurling fireballs with explosive results all over a battlefield, ripping through enemy ranks as though they were paper.  The thought is immensely gratifying, though his good mood is quickly broken as Andros is asked to lead the circle.  Just as well.  Judoc's best spells are fire-based, and it wouldn't do to burn down the classroom.  Too, that prick Loke would never allow himself to admit that Judoc was the most talented of any of the students, the short-sighted fool, though he admits with grudging respect that the others are competent for the most part, except for poor Elliot, who is probably better suited for a sword, not magery.

So when Andros begins his spell, Judoc contributes his own energy like a good soldier.  Sabotaging the spell doesn't even occur to Judoc.  Instead, he concentrates on the spell, learning what he can of it as Andros leads it.  Though he hasn't mastered Darkness yet, Judoc still can contribute energy.

But when the spell begins to deteriorate, Judoc's thoughts race back to the stories of demons summoned and fires burning.  Get it together, Andros, he thinks, knowing that this wouldn't have happened if Loke had called on Judoc instead to lead.

OOC: Continue to contribute to the spell unless/until ordered by Loke or another teacher to break concentration.

Re: Ritual and Error

Indrid has said little of his own background in the magical arts, specifically how he came to know he could wield the mystical forces and what incantations he has learned before entering school.  He has been relatively private, and obviously irritated at his placement in the House of Soldiers instead of the House of Nobles where he believed to belong.  But the weeks of close daily life have softened his normally rough edges and slight intolerance of those below his station.

Colt is fascinated by the study of all things magic.  He approaches it with a zest, and a clinical eye for procedure and technique.  That there is a rhythm and patterns to the ritual of spell casting, but also that there is an indescribable art, an intangible form to the practice, never ceases to amaze him.

As Wilmer is picked to be the test subject Indrid is just happy that it isn’t him.  He would never admit it but he feels inferior to the others.  They name spells he has barely heard of, and they talk about them as if they read about as children.  So, Indrid does his part, more out of some sense of obligation than a fear of detention, or fear of an epic failing, which he has yet to see first hand.

OOC:
Indrid will not stop his concentration until he is told to by an instructor, or the spell ends.

Re: Ritual and Error

The paths of magic that Loke described were interesting and Giles could see that the majority of people within the group had a keen demeanour about them. It was no surprise, ritual magic, from what the student knew was the key to adding supreme power to any magical effect. The thought was confirmed then by Loke in his teachings.

As they gathered into the ritual and proceeded with Andros's spell, Giles could feel his energy slowly diminishing as he offered to supplement the spell's power with his own personal might. The half-elf closed his eyes and fell into the rhythm of the ritual taking on a semi-selfinduced medititve state to feel how a ritual should be performed and to commit the method to memory.

The blackness of dark washed through his mind and slowly all other feelings seemed to dissipate from Giles's mind until the moment of a thunder's clap. Something felt wrong and Giles instantly was brought back to full attention to look at the central sphere of blackness with caution. A flash of memory passed through his mind about the unwitting summon of a demon that wrecked havoc and that was enough for Giles.

He was concerned about his well-being, surely, but also did no want to let the rest of his classmates feel the potentially lethal effects of magic un-controlled.

Giles, will (if this is possible) try to stop the spell... if that's not possible in the GURPS notion of a ritual he will instead stop contributing and start walking backwards away from the centre :D

Re: Ritual and Error

Ritual magic.  Grobbik had never really known about this topic before.  His experiences with magic had always been with individual mages, and centered around individual spells.  The thought of multiple mages working together made sense, but he hadn't really been conscious of it before they started this lesson.  It wasn't something that the community at large really knew about or saw in the everyday comings and goings of the magical community.

As Brother Loke started explaining the ideas and theory behind ritual magic, Grobbik listened intently to what he was saying.  It was more of an overview in his opinion, but that also seemed more appropriate given the nature of casting spells.  It seemed like each wizard had their own way of conceptualizing the magical energy around them, and each one had their own stylized approach.

To Grobbik, the magic lay about them like they were under water, and he only had to channel currents to bend the mana to his will.  It seemed so natural to visualize it that way that sometimes he had problems understanding other mages when they used their terminology.  Judoc was the worst, of course, because he never made sense when he discussed mana.  However, Grobbik found that his point of view was sometimes just as alien to them, so he wasn't sure if it was his problem or a more generalized issue amongst the wizard community.

When the moment came for them to put their collective will together for a darkness spell, Grobbik wasn't sure how it would work.  He had great ability with water spells, but thus far other weaves had escaped him.  He had not even tried anything in the Light college, so he really wasn't sure how well he would do helping out Andros' spell.  But, he resolved to try, and moved into the group with everyone else.

As the spell started, Grobbik visualized the water around them flowing towards Wilmer, and he could almost feel the pool of mana that formed around them as Andros cast his spell.  However, the water was increasingly turbulent, like a storm was coming, or maybe as if a great wind was blowing over the waves.  He could not identify the cause of the undertow, but one thing was certain.  Andros was having trouble controlling it, and Grobbik couldn't do anything to help.

In the back of his mind, Grobbik finds himself concerned that his specialized magical ability was not well suited to powering a spell in the Light college.  He winces a little bit as the sphere of darkness began to waver, and then tries to pull his concentration even tighter to prevent the spell from failing on his account.  'I will not be the one Brother Loke singles out this time' he thinks to himself.  However, just to be safe, he also considers exactly what spell he should cast on the off chance that a demon does appear...

Re: Ritual and Error

There seems to be a differing set of reactions to the wayward spell around the room.  The vast majority of the students seem to continue on as if nothing had happened, indeed, Wilmer himself acts as if nothing what so ever is out of place perhaps afraid to admit that anything he attempts had gone astray.  Some other students such as Grobbik and Judoc seem to continue their attention, though perhaps only in part, their eyes scanning the room in anticipation of future cues towards some continued evil.  Elliot, at first, seems to have the greatest reaction.  He gasps inwardly, his attention to the spell obviously shattered, though Giles soon after makes a much more determined stance, and retreats several paces back, his face cast into a look of iron as he refuses to contribute further towards a known failed spell.  But even as he shuffles his first foot, Loke destroys the silence in the room with a bark.  "NO!"  he shouts, though it is difficult to determine at what, for at the same time Giles makes his second shuffling step back, the small globe of emptiness in the center of their circle explodes outward, bathing the entire room in black.  Towards the center of the room, the sound of rollicking thunder continues like an echo from a distant room.

"End the spell fool!" Loke calls from the darkness, the sound of his voice implying he had not moved from his spot in the circle.  A moment after, cutting off the sound of Wilmer's reply, a crash erupts from the center of the room, followed by a steady vibration...

OOC:  You are all bathed in a penetrating darkness, and cannot make out anything around you.  The room is laid out generally like a square and all of the desks had been pushed back against the walls when the spell had been started.  Again, in general you know that the entryway to the room is in the northeast corner.  The whole class had been arranged in a circle, though Giles had taken a few steps back as the spell cooked off.  Please post two seconds worth of action.

The room goes pitch dark, and Judoc listens intently around him.   Thoughts flash through his mind.  What had gone wrong with the spell?  Why was the thunder continuing?  What was the crash?  The spell seems to have worked in that the room is now completely dark, but the sounds coming from the middle of the room sound all wrong.  Whatever has happened, though, Judoc is more than sure he can handle it.  So he remains alert, ready to cast if necessary, but waiting the darkness out to see what happens next.

Re: Ritual and Error

Indrid Colt is a young man who seems confident, sure of himself and a man who understands and embraces his future.  But it isnt so under the surface.  Inside his mind and heart as a younger man he has struggled for years with the correct path.  Should he follow his fathers footsteps and dive into the family business?  His own father seemed to make merchating look easy but as he grew into adolescence and began to learn just what goes into managing, hiring, negotiations, regulations and law, and so much more, Indrid realized that he might enjoy life more following his other talent...magic.  And so splitting his time as a youth, between the magical arts, getting his feet wet in the murky sewers of profiteering and being a playboy, Colt needs to have some serious life experiences before he comes to realize how important focus is to a sorcerer.

So, when the student's spell spins dangerously out of control the young man doesn’t see the inherent danger.  Indrid has never seen a spell go so horribly wrong that it could kill, but, he does feel unsafe enough to know something is wrong.

Re: Ritual and Error

Grobbik feels the waves building and swirling in the darkness engulfing him, but continues helping with the spell anyway.  While he can feel the mana swirling around him, Grobbik doesn't know any spells in the Light and Darkness college.  He doesn't know how this school of magic works, so he is a very poor judge of when it fails too.  He doesn't understand the currents being woven together, so he continues to follow the lead of their instructor...  Until he signals to them that something is horribly wrong.  If Brother Loke is concerned about the spell, then Grobbik is too.  Very, very concerned.   Immediately Grobbik pulls his energy out of the spell.  The risk was too great for him to continue.  Then he takes two steps back, away from the vibration, and thinks back to the stories that people told him about the worst misfires they had seen.  Grobbik would be prepared for the worst.

Re: Ritual and Error

Though there are numerous sounds of scuffling feet and a few furtive breaths, for the most part silence and darkness reign over the next few moment.  From the center of the room, there is a noise like chalk scraping against stone, and a soft, high-pitched whine.  In an instant, like the dropping of a cloak, the darkness spell washes away, and though the light in the room is dim, it still cuts at the eyes for a moment as they adjust back.  Now, in the center of the room, where there had been nothing before sits a creature no more than three feet in height though it's features are menacing.

Imp

The thing has features almost like a man, though with wiry arms and legs, too long and lean to be real, protruding from his torso.  At the tips of his spindly hands protrude thin, white razors and atop his shoulders was a squat looking head with tall arcing ears and stubby goat-like horns.  From his back sprout a set of wispy ineffectual wings.  For all his awkward features however, the look set about the demon's face is a weave of comedy and horror, creating a sickening effect to all who look on.

All at once it seems, the students start casting their spells and spurts of flames intermingle with projectiles of earth and ice.  Loke himself seems taken aback, and for the moment at least, still holds his spot in the room rather than casting his own weapon of choice.  With a brief look around, the creature launches itself into the air off powerful legs, making it's way towards the two students closest to the door...

OOC:  For those of you who have posted that you already started casting a spell it is now complete and ready to be launched.  The downside is the close quarters means any sort of miss might mean disaster for some of the other students.  Then again, they aren't from the house of soldiers, so you aren't really that close...  I've put a rough combat map in the maps section (I'm totally useless at maps) but it should at least give you guys the idea of what is going on.  Characters are denoted by the first three letters of their names and the rest should be mentioned in the 'legend'.

So, the stories were true.  Demons could be summoned through spellcasting failure.   Too bad for Andros.   Judoc isn't sure, but he thinks demons can't necessarily be killed, although they can be banished from this plane.  He'll get his chance to see for sure, though.  Nothing like first-hand research to discover the truth for himself.

The young mage knows he's a talented fireball chucker, but still, he doesn't want to injure any other student foolish enough to wander within Judoc's field of fire, so he waits for an opportune moment to hurl his conjured flame.  The imp will regret this day.

Re: Ritual and Error

When the spell started to go bad, Grobbik knew something was off.  He could feel the disturbance in the mana currents.  But magically speaking, he had never seen anything like this.  Conjuring up some sort of magical creature like this was the stuff of lore, not reality.  It was hard for him to believe that a darkness spell had somehow resulted in a demon.  It didn't make any sense.  Still, here the creature sat.

Since it's intentions were unknown, Grobbik was a bit hesitant to attack the thing on sight.  Instead, his merchant roots kicked in, and he found himself negotiating with the thing.

"Creature!  Tell us your intentions lest we assume the worst!"

Re: Ritual and Error

The lesson is one full of surprises for Indrid.  He doesn’t come from a long line of magic users, he's not a legacy here, the only relative he's aware of to have gained notoriety with spells is a great aunt who was branded a witch but Colt isn’t certain if the family stories are true.  So he is presumably less prepared through way of rumor, myth and fact than some others who may have seen spells not only go horribly wrong, but work as well.

The obscuring darkness is something quite unexpected but equally shocking and alluring to the young student.  But it is the following odd sounds and sense of fear from his house mates that have him slightly rattled.  And then when the darkness lifts and Colt sees a winged beast panic grips him!  He's seen sketchings in books and parchment, heard tales of what they could do and generally their malevolent and destructive nature, but in his wildest dreams he never thought he'd meet one before graduation!

Indrid moves to his left, holding his back as far from the beast as he can.

Re: Ritual and Error

The thing from the abyss does not halt as it reaches the two students, but instead lashes out with one hand, shredding his bony claws against the cloaked body of the closest student Alevius Cleppo, a boy from the House of Bishops.  Though Alevius twists his body frantically to escape the demon's grasp, he succeeds only in throwing himself off balance.

The imp lets out a muffled cackle, like gargled laughter, or an infant cooing with the face of evil.  His claw finds its mark true, striking deep into the boy's flesh and tearing robe and body with vicious fervor.  Spurts of blood erupt from the wound as Alevius goes spinning into a dive for the floor.  Though he seems lucid, the shoots of brilliant red leaking from his body seem to suggest that the boy will not be doing anything useful for the time being.

The other boy in the mix, Rudolfus Crowe (also of the Bishop house), seems completely taken aback by the attack, with not so much of a wisp of a defense to his name.  Instead he simply watches as his friend drops, bleeding in torrents as he strikes the floor.

Indrid works his way around around the room, not really afraid though nor is he really wanting to engage himself in a fight that might meet no good end.  Brother Loke finally seems to come to his senses, summoning a ball of solid black to his hand though what it is seems a mystery.  Most of the other students take their times to summons spells as well, or lever back the spells they already have cast but for the moment, there is no one else to act for the time being.

OOC:  One round of action complete and the map (shudder) is updated.  Grobbik and Judoc have one round of aim, though it is still a muddled picture with Rudolfus right next to the beast.  Please post two more rounds of action.

There seemsto be no reasoning with the demon.  The creature had ignored Grobbik's challenge and is now proceeding to murder his way through the class.    Judoc watches as the demon rips through Alevius, and in spite of himself, the young mage shudders.  That could easily be Judoc being eviscerated.   The close confines means that others could be harmed in the midst of spells, but Judoc cannot just watch as the infernal thing kills student after student.  And what is Loke doing?  Is it up to Judoc to save everyone?

Gathering his courage, he steps forward and hurls his fireball at the imp, calling out, "Back to the pit with you, fiend!"  He prays that Rudolfus has the good sense to get out of the way.

Grobbik finally fumbles his knife out of it's sheath, and holds it out in front of him as he eyes the imp warily.  Judging from it's behavior, the creature was not interested in talking, OR it was a mindless killing machine.  Grobbik was interested to know which was the case, so he yells out "Hey!  Sewer Face, over here!".  However, he is also no fool, so he aims at the creature with his ice dagger at the same time.

Re: Ritual and Error

Unwilling to wait for the child-sized demon to lash out against another classmate, Judoc whips his arm around, sending his fireball flying.  Though at first it seems destined to impact the beast right at head-level, the flying ball of flames veers just high and right, sailing through the breadth of space that Alevius had just vacated with his fall.  The joyously flickering energy dances forward through the air, finally impacting at the corner of the doorway.  The fireball itself vanishes in an instant at contact; the door nearly shares the same fate...  Upon impact, a hinge explodes violently off, sailing a few feet back into the room, The bottom hinge strains and warps but in the end holds the door limp and sagging.  The door itself shoulders a large bit of the damage, a four-inch semicircle of black char appears in an instant from where the ball disappeared and tiny coals and licking flames climb from the spot.  Luckily, the door itself is is thick oak and lacquered on all sides, or it likely would have been a near-instant inferno.

The thing itself turns it's head for a moment just as the magic sails past and cackles in a high-pitched warble.

[Language unknown: Ersainintconthu, is moous waosou!  Whusck eitic onelo trch!]

It bounds lightly on two feet as it clears the still rolling form of Alevius, and makes it's way straight towards the now obstructed doorway, Rudolfus doing nothing to hamper it's escape.

Indrid makes a break for the opening as well, shielding his face from the blast as he attempts to be the one responsible for keeping the beast in check, or at least in the room.  Many more in the room do nothing, or else grip their spells in confusion or fear, afraid of doing as Judoc has or worse, hitting someone else in the line of fire.  As the thing bounds into the gaps of the portal, one more missile, this one a black and empty looking spell shoots out towards the demon, nearly hitting the thing, though he twists through the doorway and into safety as the spell hits the smouldering and broken wood and dissipates into nothingness.

Indrid only a few steps behind the thing, It maintains its back towards him, giggling in a horrible screel as it continues into the hallway...

OOC:  Combat map updated for now, but most of you are separated by a wall or more from the demon.  Please post 3 rounds of action.  The door had been open slightly before but now is hanging limply from one hinge.  Most of the students have not physically moved, but many still have spells in their hands.  Alevius appears still conscious, though bleeding and has spent the past moments kicking his way away from where the imp had previously stood.

Judoc should have felt a thrill of fear as his fireball just missed the demon and collided with the door, nearly blowing up the wooden door in the process.  A wiser man would have dreaded the impending verbal excoriation from Brother Loke, but the only thing Judoc thinks is that he should have nailed the fiend right in the skull.  Cursing, he moves forward, already summoning another ball of mana into flame, determined to burn the demon straight back to hell.

Re: Ritual and Error

As quick as the demon appeared, it is all but gone, scampering through the corridors and cackling into an echo.  Though a few are quick to move, it seems to little effect.  Rudolfus is first, getting down onto one knee to peer over Alevius, or perhaps to work the beginnings of a healing spell - he seems to give no attention to the imp bounding away from the room.  However, his act of concern proves to be a direct impediment to those who want the demon dead.

Grobbik is the first to move, racing towards the door with spell in hand, a bluish vapor of magic seeming ready to morph into a deadly form.  But Grobbik finds himself forced to dodge around Alevius, slowing his movement.  Judoc follows a near step behind, likewise hampered by the obstacle.

Elliot stands near stationary, his eyes wide in shock as he is shoved roughly back by Mariana, a fist-sized orb of rock and sand hovering just out of her grasp.

The one seemingly most likely to catch the beast however is Indrid, only steps behind but all too quickly he makes a desperate attempt, diving forward to knock the thing roughly off of it's base...  Even this attempt however is fruitless as the thing dances just out of range, Indrid collapsing roughly to the ground.

As Grobbik reaches the door just a step ahead of Mariana and Judoc, the beast rounds a corner in the hallway, escaping from view, his mass-less arms whipping above his head as he billows with laughter...

Perhaps the one man who had done the least or in any case less than was expected, was brother Loke himself.  The bearer of the diamonds threw a single spell, then naught a second effort to catch the beast that was guilty of slicing Alevius Cleppo open.  Instead, he takes a single step directly across the room, his eyes boring down on the pair of Giles and Elliot.

Near the doorway, Rudolfus's healing spells completes.  And though the Alevius's shirt is still soaked through with blood, his obvious relief is apparent.

OOC:  For the sake of not posting into a chase that is hopeless I will save you guys the trouble.  The imp gets away for now, it did not use any apparent magic once it was summoned, and used only foot-power to escape.  So it is somewhere not too far.  This thread remains open for IC RP purposes

Re: Ritual and Error

The demon was gone.  Grobbik could tell he had no chance of catching it, so there wasn't anything more to do in this moment.  Loke wasn't moving, and as their teacher he was in charge of the situation.  Thus, Grobbik followed his lead.  Peering out into the hallway, Grobbik decided to stand guard.  He doubted the creature would come back, as it's only motivation seemed to involve leaving.  Still, it was better to be safe rather than sorry, in case the thing was attracted to magic or something.  Cautiously he sheaths his dagger as he takes up what seems like the best place to observe the hall where the creature went.

As he stands guard there, Grobbik can't help but think over the situation in his mind.  One person withdrew from the circle, and that was enough to throw the whole spell out of kilter.  He felt the magic currents shift, even if he didn't know why they did.  It was their first time casting magic as a group, so he wasn't surprised that it failed.  However, the manner of their failure definitely got his attention.  They had conjured a demon of some sort.  It was the stuff that the senior students whispered to the freshmen to frighten them, and here they had done it.  Grobbik was certain that everyone in the room would pay very close attention to their spells from here on out.  He would for sure.

Considering the situation, Grobbik was grateful that no one had been killed.  It could have been much worse.  The thing cut through Alevius like butter, and many more of them could have been killed or maimed had the creature stayed.  It was so quick that even spells from point blank range weren't hitting it.  They had a lot to learn if they were going to survive a battle.  A trained assassin could easily have killed them one by one by using his classmates as shields.  Grobbik could picture it in his mind.

As Brother Loke started what was sure to be a lecture, Grobbik couldn't help but feel sorry for Giles.  Probably everyone had been tempted to leave the circle.  Giles was just the person who left first.  He was getting blamed for something any one of them could have done.  It was an unfortunate situation, but a good learning opportunity in a sense.

Unfortunately, the coming lecture was bound to be very difficult on Giles.  Brother Loke was very, very mad, and he had reason to be.  This event was certain to have ramifications beyond what happened in this room.  If the demon killed or maimed anyone, Loke was ultimately the man responsible for it.  Surely he would be called in front of the most powerful people at the university to answer for this.  He was responsible for a group of novices, and he had almost gotten one of them killed.

Quietly Grobbik took a sidelong glance at Elliot Strange.  If anyone were to drop out it would be him, and given the circumstances Grobbik didn't think he'd last the day.  Weaving magic was dangerous, and today underscored that with an exclamation point no one could have implemented with mere words.  The question was how many others were going to quit after seeing what could happen.  This was certainly about the worst case.

As he listened to the conversation develop, Grobbik took another look up the hallway to make sure they were safe.  His missile was cool and watery in his hand, and it was strangely comforting under the circumstances.

Cancelling the spell before the fireball can form, Judoc stumbles out into the hallway and scans the corridor.  The imp had escaped, and he feels the momentary rush of adrenaline drain from his body.  His head swings back to the doorway.  He should have caught the creature!  His spell had only just missed roasting the demon alive, but it had managed to escape, and now it was loose, causing only God knows how much mischief.

"We need to track it down!" he calls out.  "Who's with me?  Let's find the foul creature and send it back to the pit!"  But before setting off at a run, he hangs back, curious to see what Brother Loke would say.  For once, Judoc finds himself to not be the unjust target of the brother's wrath, but if anyone knows how to kill a demon, it will be the Templar.

Re: Ritual and Error

It seems at first that Giles is taken aback at being talked to in such a way by a man of such meager status, even if he was a bearer of the diamonds on his knight's cross.  For a brief moment he steels himself up, as if to reprimand or correct the elder but after a moment he thinks better of it and simply keeps his mouth shut.

Elliot for his part simply looks morose, still having not moved from the corner he stood in when the spell was cast.  It would not be a stretch to imagine him issuing self-blame for the whole event, even if he had not been explicitly named.

A few others in the class still mill about, with a few magical darts still poised for attack, but it seems with the passing of a few more seconds that the beast is not about to return to the class.

Re: Ritual and Error

Loke snarls in disgust perhaps just at the situation or otherwise just at the lack of accountability from his class.  "Class dismissed."  he says with resignation, stepping over towards Alevius for the first time.  "Come now Mr. Cleppo, lets find you the infirmary to ensure there are no lingering effects from the demon's claws."

OOC:  I'll start up a new thread as I have the time, unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot of work put into it yet, though I know where things are going.  2 character points for everyone for this thread, due to it mostly being a role playing exercise, but I do expect things to get a little more character driven in the upcoming threads to allow you guys a little more leeway.
