People

AZER

Bishop Abram:  Age 34
Uncommonly young for such a high ranking clergy, Abram has ambitions to some day make the Curia.  He spends the majority of his time at the cathedral, though he often visits the Templar College as well, ensuring the church has a hand on how the pupils are trained.

Edrick Bode:  Age 62
A crotchety and aging man, Erdrick is the main groundskeeper at the Cathedral.

Mary Brighton:  Age 19
A young, attractive woman who delights in tricks, thieves' tradecraft, and the flashiest side of magical aptitude.  She is currently taking odd jobs to fulfill her indulgent tastes.

Dirk:  Age 64
A lively and energetic man just reaching his late years.  He has been known to organize and solicit illegal activities and is likely a member of Murderer's Row

Baron Graves:  Age 41
The Provost of the Templar College for Battle Magic, Baron Graves has already earned the Templar's highest honors and now spends a great deal of time outside the walls of his school.  He has ambitions to control the entirety of the city even if his noble titles do not allow him to rule over it.  He already has a hand in some lesser guilds.

Caana Heirule:  Age 35
Canna is a Lieutenant of Murderer's Row.  He is exceptionally crafty, bright, and knows his way around a fight.  He contacted Judoc after the fight with Thresher and offered a favor for when Judoc needed it.  Once Judoc was tasked by Baron Graves with killing Thresher, Caana managed to smooth the whole thing over, sending Thresher off into hiding while spreading the word of his death.  However, the whole situation put Judoc into a debt with the organization and it is one that has yet to be reclaimed...

Brother Hilath:  Age 73
The Provost's secretary, Brother Hilath teaches no classes at the college, though he is well acquainted with all of the staff and knows the intimacies of the school itself better than most of the staff.  When the provost is off politicking for the school, Hilath runs day to day business with meticulous efficiency.

Brother Loke:  Age 62
Mentor at the Templar College, Loke is technically a monk, and owns very little authority within the church, however he is a holder of the diamonds on his Knight's Cross which makes him highly respected wherever he goes within the Templars.  A gifted mage, the man has a reputation for being both foul-tempered and cruel.

Brother Moloran:  Age 35
A recent addition to the college, Brother Moloran instructs the Battle Magic classes - which deals less with specific spells than their application in warfare.  He is stern, but fairer than most of the monks and has a good reputation with all of the students who attend his classes.

Sir Neranmal:  Age 43
Mentor at the Templar College, Neranmal is lower than most professors in both status and rank, being only a knight and only holds his original Knight's Cross, however he is quite gifted in magic.  He mostly instructs in the Air College, where his knowledge outpaces even that of Brother Loke himself.

'Thresher' Olgudsback:  Age 32
A lower level operator for Murderer's Row, Thresher was caught at a safe house raid and forced to fight in the Arena at Azer on All Saints Day.  He was dressed in costume as death and drew Judoc as his opponent.  Thresher was released after Judoc declined to kill him at the end of the fight.  However, Graves was so enraged at the release that he first tasked Elliot Strange and then Judoc with the murder of the Row peon.

Duke Suviel Orilou of Azer:  Age 54
The governor of Azer and all of Dyecaslte Isle, Suviel rules from Orilou Manor, although he seems to spend little time there these days.  He is rumored to spend the vast majority of his time in court at Megalos, leaving the administration of the isle to his assistants.

Baron Raisalter:  Age 54
Rumor has it that Baron Raisalter has had a rich career as a knight and Templar before settling down at the College of Battle Magic to teach religious studies.  he has earned the swords to his Knight's Cross, only surpassed by those few who have earned their diamonds.  He at times seems slightly out of place, for he is much kinder that most of the other teachers, encouraging thought rather than discipline and encouraging his students to test the bounds of their faith and reason.

Brother Raymond:  Age 41
The keeper of the College Library, Brother Raymond has acquired a vast knowledge in history, magical theory, and various subjects.  Still, he is held in rather less esteem than the vast majority of the staff because he tends books rather than teaching students and conducting research.

Deacon Samuel:  Age 19
Samuel is an ambitious and well to do young man, though he has obviously not had to work for most things in his life.  His lack of social status has also left him with a lack in the social graces expected of a man of the cloth.  He attended the seminary in Megalos and is finishing the last of his training in the Cathedral of Azer prior to receiving his ordination as a priest.

Master Ulrich:  Age Unknown
The rumored guildmaster of Murderer's Row, Ulrich is oft whipsered of but never seen.  Rumors abound that escaped a murder attempt four years ago in a disagreement with Baron Graves which only seems to increase this phantom's legend.

THREE CORNERS

Captain Nathan Brashear:  Age 38
Captain of the company at Fort Three Corners, Captain Brashear has held his station for going on 4 years.  He is a no-nonsense leader, giving as much rope to each of his lieutenants as could be reasonably expected until they prove themselves unworthy of it.  He is kind and interested in all of his men, spending more time with the soldiers than he does with the officer's mess.

Bromdaeg Flintarm:  Age 73
A master miner and metallurgist, Bromdaeg was recruited by Duke Bran to find ore in the southern hills near Three Corners.  Despite his entirely direct attitude and lack of tact, he manages to endear himself to most of his companions, perhaps because his thick Dwarven brogue is near impossible to understand.  Recruited for another job by the Duke Bran which required him to travel south again.

Lieutenant Einion Broskow:  Age 24
A minor noble from Craine, Broskow has been given most everything for his entire life and takes a similar attitude toward his military career.  He leads the second platoon by word only, expecting his enlisted supervisors to take the brunt of responsibility for follow through.  When things go awry he often yells arbitrarily at anyone around and he defers blame to those underneath him.  Most of the soldiers not directly reporting to him avoid his company.  His military career was cut short when he was drafted by Duke Bran to scout out the southern hills for mining opportunities, after which he did not return to the fort.

Rudyard Dodricks:  Age 59
Rudyard is a man approaching retirement, though he seems more chipper than most youth.  He is charged with running routes between the southern forts (from Raphael south along the R. Conn then West along the Makarem to three corners before making his way back) to bring mail and supplies.

Lieutenant Dorian: Age 27
Executive Officer of the Fort on Three Corners, Dorian is tasked with the minutia of running the company.  Money, pay, supply, berthing and punishment are all overseen by him, not to mention that he is the captain's first stop whenever something in the command isn't up to standard.  Though he is generally good natured, the workload at times leaves the lieutenant harried and frustrated.

Corporal Allen Edenburg:  Age 20
Edenburg has been at the Fort on Three Corners for two years, and is skilled at hunting skills, including the bow and some bits of tracking.

Fasad Hasim ibn Mohammad:  Age 55
Fasad is the leader of the small village of Tabuk, situated just southeast of the Fort on Three Corners.  A veteran of the Border Wars, Fasad is one of the most averse this area averse to reigniting the struggle and has proven to be somewhat hospitable to Megalan counterparts, though he fully realizes his entire village is not behind him.

Lieutenant Gunnar Hetrick:  Age 28
A minor noble's son, Gunnar is a platoon Lieutenant at the Fort on Three Corners.  Gunnar is well respected by his men as well as by Captain Brashear.  He is often the first to volunteer for arduous duty and puts his men in front of himself.

Khaldun al-Jumah:  Age 57
Khaldun is a one time soldier of the Wazifi Army who has settled in his old age to the small luxuries offered as bailiff to Haj Umr.  He has been sent with Mika'il and the others to Perdition as an adviser and foreman.

Darran Makreigh:  Age 60
A relatively low administrator for Duke Bran, Darran was conscripted for the Duke's pet project of finding a workable mine near the area of Three Corners.  Though the mission itself was successful, Darran lost half of a leg in the process when it was bitten off by a Tunnel Wyrm.

Lieutenant Radwan Kahlid:  Age 24
One of the newer Lieutenants at the Fort, Radwan has had his platoon over the last year.  Though he is respected enough, especially in comparison to Broskow, Radwan often is often stubborn with a quick temper.  He was briefly captured prior to the battle of Three Corners, though he managed to be rescued with minimal permanent damage.

Mika'il al-'ulma:  Deceased
Apprentice to the Necromancer Haj Umr who led the expedition to Perdition

Munt:  Age Unknown
Munt is an assistant to the necromancer who gives the appearance of being a great patchwork quilt of flesh and organs.  Though the man is disfigured almost to the point of being inhuman and walks with an obvious hunch in his back, he is surprisingly nimble and strong.  His current whereabouts are unknown.

Corporal Gustaf Pierce:  Age 23

Private Redman:  Age 18

Private Olan Rodrickson:  Age 19
Corporal Edenburg has been at Three Corners for near on a year and is a specialist in Arabic Language and Wazifi culture.

Sadda the Demon:  Deceased
Sadda has only come to the tower of Haj Umr within the past few years, a time which marked the abrupt shift of Haj Umr's persona from militant conspirer to harbinger of the apocalypse.  Though Sadda seldom speaks he is not frequently far from Haj Umr unless out on the necromancer's bidding.  His whereabouts are unknown since the death of Haj Umr.

First Sergeant Colton Spratt:  Age 40
The Company senior enlisted on Fort Three Corners, he's spent more of his life in service of Megalan Army than not.  The first Sergeant is an appearances man, concerned more with organization than form and function.  However, his expectations are clear and he is generally well liked by the men who also appreciate tidiness and discipline.

Haj Umr ibn-Hussein abd-al-Rahman al-alim Takali:  Deceased
Necromancer that lorded over the tower at al-Hassan, Haj Umr was feared by the villagers and idolized by many of his zealot followers.  Killed by Giles J'naeth Hind's military expedition.

Terri Bertrand  Widow of Sir Rondald Bertrand, she stands near 5'7 with a strong but slender frame.  She has light brown, shoulder length hair that is nearly always tied back behind her head in a high tail and brown eyes.  Her pale cheekbones are thin and splashed with a meager offering of freckles that give her the appearance of having a rather squashed face.  She left Craine soon after her husband was murdered by ruffians seeking revenge of those he had brought to justice.  Moving to the new settlement of Three Corners to try and start a new life, where she has multiple friends and former adventuring companions who now live there.

CRAINE

Duke Bran:  Age 61
The Duke of Craine, Bran has made a slow process of building and honing his personal, political, and integrated power through the territories under his control and his own armies.  A fierce proponent of pre-emptive strike prior to the Frontier Wars, Bran felt his position validated once the forces of Wazif attacked on their own.  Now a decade removed from the four year conflict, Bran has rebuilt his power after the conflict and now controls as much force as anyone but the Emperor.

Guildmaster Malak Dehogue:  Age 84
Despite his age, the Master of the Mage's guild in Craine is spirited and chipper, with a bounce in his step and an overlarge smile that he produces as easily for the young and his students as he does for his peers.  Dehogue is almost universally respected, with several Thaumatological and Alchemical discoveries attributed to him.

Salazar Dennick:  Age 48
Salazar is the innkeeper at the Golden Candle, one of the better inns in the lower wards of Craine.  He is extremely proud of his establishment, and he generally takes insults or insinuations personally.

Alma Gasteyer:  Age 43
Niece to Vunik, Alma approaches Rolf with an entreaty to save her uncle from Witten Asylum.  Though she has little evidence of mistreatment, she has been unable to see her uncle for over a month and she credits her uncle's deteriorating condition with the asylum itself.

Vunik Gasteyer:  Age 68
An experienced wizard and former member of the Mage's Guild in Craine, Vunik has taken a turn for the worse over recent years, causing various disturbances in public including one in which he accosted several nobles.  He was arrested for his most recent infraction, and sentenced to a term in Witten Asylum, an institution for the insane and addicted near the Western walls of Craine.

Doctor Heraladus:  Deceased
The lead doctor at the Witten Asylum.  Doctor Heraladus is a polarizing figure in Craine.  Many fear the asylum and what goes on inside, though there are plenty to argue that the institution is a 'fitting place for the dregs of society'.  Heraladus seems not to involve himself outwardly in politics however, preferring to keep himself at work within the asylum.

Doctor Josias Illhausen:  Age 73
Proprietor for the Witten Asylum for nearly forty years, Doctor Illhausen has gained a stellar reputation for helping the addled patients.  However, over the last decade or more, he has seemed to take a step back in the organization, showing up only to defend the institution in its most perilous times of need.

Sadim Illian:  Age 19
A gifted but lazy mage, Sadim has adopted the strategy of standing out by making everyone else seem bad by comparison.  Having taken a shine to Rolf in particular, Sadim spends much of his time giving Rolf worthless tasks, or ruining his conversation with others by pointing out faults or failures without any context.

Captain Geoffrey Talinson:  Age 47
As Captain of the guards for the lower wards of Craine, Captain Talinson is mostly tasked with keeping the peace.  In general, he runs a tight ship, and he expects all of his guards to both protect the city and the citizens fairly.  He is generally liked by the commons of Craine, though there are always outliers...

Viscount Archibald Tenesworth:  Age 53
The Viscount of Sussex rules a wide county south of the River Smoke that has fewer people than it does cattle and sheep.  With few citizens to try his time, he often spends most of his time in the city of Craine and is an active participant in the Mage's guild there.

Thomas Sabinson:  Age 26
Thomas is second footman to Duke Bran, the Duke of Craine.  Despite his youth, he has been raised nearly his whole life in service and is entirely competent in the intricacies of the court and his employers peculiarities.  He takes it upon himself to know all the goings on in the castle.  While his relatively minor duties often allows for some free time for his own purposes, he longs for a job with more prestige, such as valet or butler.

Baron Edward Vielliant:  Age 42
Baron of a small group of farmsteads and a village on the outskirts of Craine, Vielliant is often discounted as a man of no or little influence.  However, Vielliant is constantly jostling for rank and prestige, and is exceedingly interested in the futures of his teenage son, Archibald.

Lucas Bulvin:  Age 28
Leader of a small street gang.  Affiliations unknown.  Has wild red hair, dark blue eyes, and usually wears a maroon shirt.  Known to carry a rapier.

Deng Learen:  Age 32
A low level street thug, probably independent.

Places

Dyecastle Island
The island makes up a few hundred square miles immediately east of the Capital of Megalos.  The only major port is Azer, located all the way to the north of the island.  Several other towns scatter the island to the south, mostly to enable the vast logging and shipbuilding trade.

Orilou Manor
Duke Suviel of Azer's Manor, staffed by hundreds of the local servants and guards, though the master almost never dwells there for long.

St. Luke Cathedral
Largest and most grandiose church in Azer.  Seat to the Bishop Abram who leads the Christian faith on Dycastle Island.

Megalos
The capital city of the nation of the same name, Megalos sprawls over several leagues and hosts nearly a million citizens.  It is the center of everything in the city, including corruption.

Azer Great Arena
The term great might be a slight misnomer but the arena has a tradition of games on feast days.  Both freemen and slaves are able to participate, with purses fetching upward of two gold marks ($400) plus tips from the crowd.  However, failure is often just as extreme, with many bouts being fought to the death.

Hall of Nobles
Dormitory on the campus of the Templar College of Battle Magic, it houses only the sons of the most influential families in Megalos.

Hall of Bishops
Dormitory on the campus of the Templar College of Battle Magic, it houses the sons of the wealthy, most of which bought their way into the college in the first place.

Hall of Soldiers
Dormitory on the campus of the Templar College of Battle Magic, it houses the common and less wealthy members of the student body.  However, even here you would be unlikely to find anyone poor.

The Fort on Three Corners
This fort some fifteen miles east-northeast of the tri-border of Caithness, Al-Wazif, and Megalos.  Genrally, it is one of the least desired army stations and one of the hardest to staff, defectors are not uncommon.  Though its main purpose is to provide deter and warn of border incursions, the Fort has not seen a real skirmish in several years.

Tabuk
A small village just south of the Border of Megalos and Al-Wazif.  This village has proven to be one of the few rural areas amenable to Megalan peoples, thanks in the most part to it's leader, Fasad.

al-Hassan
A small village said to be home to the Necromancer Haj Umr ibn-Hussein abd-al-Rahman al-alim Takali near the mountains.

CRAINE

Parrenton Manor
Home of Duke Bran of Craine, Parrenton Manor is more of a castle fortified for war than a real manor house.  It hosts high parapets with openings for archers and a twin iron crossbar gates that drop into place in a moment if required.  The inside however, is lavishly decorated and well cared for.  It is plain to see that the duchy supplies plenty of wealth to be getting on with...

Organizations

The Legions
Often at war, Megalos keeps a large standing army, supplemented by levies when needed. The Imperial Legions are said to be the best fighting force in Ytarria.  Actual quality varies, depending on whether they are led by professional soldiers or spoiled sons of noblemen. The legions welcome commoners, and the best officers are often commoners or even freed slaves.

Each legion has an attached corps of wizards; Megalan armies depend on magic. This is one reason they have never conquered mana-poor Caithness.  In wartime, the legions receive support from the elite cavalry of the Megalan knighthood. Although they are formidable individually, these knights have little discipline; their effectiveness depends on their leader’s strength.

The most powerful lords keep their own legions as well. When quarrelsome nobles aren’t busy fighting the Empire’s neighbors, they often fight each other. Strictly speaking, this is against the law, and the Imperial Legions occasionally intervene.  Usually, however, such battles are ignored for political or economic expediency.

The Curia
The high order of the Christian Faith in Ytarria.  It consists of the Grand Masters of the Olybrians, the Templars, the Hospitallers, and the Thomasites, and the nine archbishops.  Caithness has one archbishop, Cardiel three, and Megalos five. Cities and large towns have resident bishops.

The Templars
The most significant military order in Megalos.  Often the Templars have their pick of the greatest young knights and wizards in the land and can reward those who do well with titles and gold.  While technically not under the direct control of the Curia, the Templars fall into a gray area between church and state and they strive to achieve greater autonomy.

Templar College of Battle Magic
The most influential academy on Dyecastle Island.  The college claims to accept magical sons of the nobility, though in truth true magical talent is much more important to most than noble blood.  Students spend six years in training, often from the age of 18 to 24 before graduation after which the highest graduates are baptized into the Templars with the rest going to the Legions.

Armsman's Guild
A recent enactment over the last four years, the Armsman's Guild is struggling.  Though the need for men at arms still exists, most nobles and great merchants hire their own retainers, and the Templars have little need for more swordsmen so its only clients seem to be the very rich hiring extra security for special occasions.  It seems most of the middle and lower high classes go elsewhere, or go without.  For now the institution is propped up by the Templars who supply both money and insight.

Mage's Guild
The true force in Magery in Azer is the Templar College, and due to the high volume of magical ability in the city willing to work for limited wages it is difficult to keep any reign on licensed use of magic.  However, the guild does exist for the purposes of enchantment and healing though their prices tend to be steep from limited work.

Acceptance into the mage's Guild comes in two levels, you can 'subscribe' which essentially gets you networking, discounted goods and services, and other slight perks.  This is open to anyone who wants to pay the subscription fee of $500 per year.

Alternatively, 'members' are allotted the full benefits of the guild, vote in elections and often are allowed heavily discounted or free access to magical services.  The flip side is that members are expected to reciprocate when needed and can be called on by the guild to assist with major spells or enchantments.  Members must either be fully qualified wizards (academy trained and certified by an institution such as the Templar College) or longstanding 'subscribers' who have been invited into the ranks.  Fee for membership is available on request only (and only to those who have a serious request).

Thieves' Guild
One of Baron Graves most frequent boasts is that no thieves guild exists in Azer...  However this is in name only and another organization gives him much more strife.

Murderer's Row
Driven underground four years ago when the guild was outlawed no guild offices exist for the row.  Instead, The Row exists in rumor and story only, though there are few who deny it exists.  Founded during the mage wars near eight decades ago, Murderer's Row is a mercenary guild consisting of fighters, thieves, and mages.  Though it claims to be apolitical, there seems to be a very fixed hidden war between the Templars and the Row.
