Night 7: The Plains of the Paynims

There is a sound like a gust of wind and everyone feels slightly nauseous and slightly disoriented as their surroundings suddenly change around them. One moment Team Arda-Nuff were huddled in a laneway in the ruined city of Gorna and the next moment they find themselves huddled behind the 15ft wide wall of a tent, flanked by other smaller tents, on a moonlit night somewhere in the desert. The only sounds to be heard are snoring from several of the tents and somewhere in the distance beyond the big tent the sound of a horse whinnying a couple of times.

Those who peek around the edge of the big tent see that it is set on one side of a cleared space at the centre of a camp. There are about 20 tents in total. Most are about 10ft square but there are 4 of these larger 15ft square tents. All are tall enough for even Minmorc to hide behind without stooping. The clear area in the centre of the camp is about 60ft across. It is illuminated by a campfire in the centre. There is also a well in the clearing and a dozen human-sized figures are chained together and asleep in the clearing near the fire. One human warrior (equipped with leather armour, shield, scimitar and spear) stands guard in front of one of the big tents on the opposite side of the clearing, watching the sleeping prisoners.

This campsite is a relatively low flat spot among the surrounding dunes, hence the well in the clearing in the middle of the camp. It is on a sort of east-west valley between the dunes. There is a 20ft high rock outcrop sticking out of the side of one of those sand dunes about 60ft southeast from where you have landed and another one 60ft north of the northernmost tents. It would be possible for the group to hide behind either of those outcrops but the dunes continue to slope upward behind them for another hundred feet or so.

Seeing how the number of tents and the number of horses greatly outnumbers his fingers Minmorc will get real serious real fast. Moving as quietly as he is able Minmorc will start heading towards the rocky out cropping to the South East.

She is almost invisible but moves through the unfamiliar terrain only slightly quieter than Minmorc

Dregz stares forlornly at the black rod, pointing inexorably towards the tent behind which everyone was hiding (or perhaps at some point beyond). For a moment he considers using his sharp knife to create a new opening in the canvas ... then decides there's more safety in numbers and slinks furtively off after the rest of his tribe.

Night 7: The Plains of the Paynims

After suddenly finding themselves in what looks like a nomads' camp (or slavers' camp?) in the desert Team Arda-Nuff all decide to withdraw to the shelter of a rocky outcrop in the side of a sand dune 60 feet away to the southeast. All except Riza, that is.

Minmorc leads the way and everyone else except Riza follows him. All move more quietly than Oopses, who stumbles over a tent rope on the way out. The rope makes a slight 'twang' but at least Oopses manages not to fall over completely. Everyone is moving at half speed to be as quiet as they can, so it takes 2 rounds for everyone to get behind the shelter of the rock outcrop. Once there they all find vantage spots where they can watch the campsite, which is well enough illuminated by the campfire for them to be able to see it quite clearly.

Meanwhile, Riza had snuck off northwards around the outside edge of the camp. She passes one tent without incident then just as she reaches the northern edge of a second tent she suddenly finds herself right behind another human warrior (m3) who is standing guard at the northeast edge of the campsite. This man is similarly dressed in sandy-coloured leather armour with a scimitar at his side but has a bow in hand and a quiver of arrows on his back. Fortunately for Riza he is looking northwards and doesn't see or hear the little lizard-girl as she almost stumbles into him from behind.

Dregz shakes his head.  Something is not quite right, but he struggles to put his finger on it.  On a whim he holds forth the Black Rod once more, to check it still wants to point to the same tent, a method that's sadly far less effective than the traditional "try strangulation" that was popular for a time in the service of one of the Dark Lords he was fighting for during the war.

The campfire is lighting up the area quite nicely ...

"Dat's it !" the little goblin whispers urgently. "We got here too early !  It was much, much darker in my dream !   Der fire was nearly out ... dark is good for us, bad for der yoomans !"

Riza curses herself quietly as she nearly blows her cover, she makes a note of the human and continues her scouting around the camp. She will prepare one of her drow poison arrows to fire off if she is found or needs to beat a hasty retreat.

Her aim is to reach the horses on the far side of the camp, without being spotted or startling the horses

Rounds 3 to 6: Riza cautiously sneaks around the northern side of the camp. Most of the time she is very quiet but has one nasty moment where she stumbles over one of the tent ropes. It sounds alarmingly loud to her but none of the guards notices the sound. Finally she reaches her destination at the northwest corner of the camp close to the northern end of the horse lines. Fortunately her movements are quiet enough not to disturb the sleeping horses either.

OOC: Main Game Map updated. Did anyone else do anything during those 4 rounds, or now in the next round after Riza reaches the horses?

Round 3 (revised): Riza continues cautiously sneaking around the northern side of the camp.

Minmorc props his greatspear against the rocky outcrop and speaks the words of a prayer accompanied by gestures that encompass all of Team Arda-Nuff behind the rocks. They all feel filled with courage by that prayer.

"When I's dun wid my magics ders gonna be sum good fightin! Yer wanna be cleva or yer wanna be else wer, nows der time," he tells them all.

Jurz readies himself, mounted on Rog the dog.

Dregz follows Minmorc's example and recites a prayer for himself, too. Both prayers sound quite loud against the quietness of the surrounding desert

The guard at the northeast edge of the camp suddenly steps into view and starts walking southward around the edge of the camp, staring intently into the darkness toward where, to his eyes, the rocky outcrop is nothing more than a darker patch in the distance.

OOC: Main Game Map updated. Does anybody else want to do anything else in round 3? Or post intended actions for round 4. Riza has not yet reached the northwest corner of the camp and we will need to play this out round by round now.
[Bless from Minmorc: All allies (except Riza) are +1 on attack rolls and saves vs fear for 19 more rounds.]

Round 4: Riza continues cautiously sneaking around the northern side of the camp.

Jurz and Minmorc both cast more spells and even Arlein meows and waves her paw at the southern end of the rock where Jurz, Rog and Minmorc are hiding. Moffdust is much more subtle as she points a wand at Bulldust and only says a single word. The only noticeable effects are that both Minmorc and Bulldust suddenly double in size.

Everyone except Minmorc (and Riza) huddles in close around Dregz and he speaks the magic word "Wyrd!" once again. The little group vanishes from behind the rock outcrop and instantly reappears behind the same large tent where they had first arrived. Giant Bulldust immediately slashes with his guisarme at the nearby guard(m3). The heavy blade slashes through the man's leather armour and he collapses on the sand before he even has a chance to cry out. Moffdust quietly cuts a small slit in the back of the tent and peeks inside.

The other two guards at the centre and southwest parts of the camp seem not to have heard anything yet.

Dregz is a little occupied peeking around the side of the tent to note either Moffa's contortions or Jurz's reaction to whatever it is that lurks within tent number one ... though his own response to what he himself has seen strangely mirrors the druid's.

"Can't get close enuff to dampen der fire," the little priest mutters quietly and with great disappointment, finally noticing Moffa's gestures and putting his eye to the small hole in the back of the tent.

Night 7: The Plains of the Paynims

As soon as Bulldust cut down the easternmost guard (m3), Minmorc shot an oversized arrow at the southwest guard (m2). His arrow missed the guard completely but the flash of movement as the missile whistled over his head certainly gave the guard a tremendous fright.

Moffdust, Jurz and Dregz each peeked into the big tent they had landed behind and all looked a bit worried about what they saw in there. Moffdust began an incantation which seemed like it must be heard by anyone nearby in the quietness of the campsite.

Then another light flared at the northern edge of the camp as one of the northernmost tents suddenly caught fire!

The silence of the camp is instantly shattered by the shouts of the southwest guard (m2), "Aiiee! Wake up, wake up! We are being attacked!", which is immediately taken up by the central guard (m1) as well. Almost immediately a woman starts screaming and a man starts yelling from the northern tent, "Aiiee! Fire! Fire!"

Within seconds there are sounds of movement and voices within virtually every tent. Women and children screaming. Men yelling at them to be quite or cursing as they fumble about in the darkness inside the tents. Horses in the horse lines begin to whinny nervously and start to pull at the ropes tethering them in line. Movement is heard inside the big tent that Team Arda-Nuff landed behind then a woman's voice speaks a short phrase and bright light fills that tent. The sound of an animal snarling is also heard from inside the tent.

The southwest guard retreats behind the concealment offered by the closest tent so he is no longer visible to the unseen archer somewhere in the darkness southeast of the campsite. He waits with shield and spear ready as he peers out into the darkness trying to see the enemy.

The central guard (m1) rushes toward the flaming tent in the north and drops his spear as he begins to use his shield to shovel sand onto the burning tent to extinguish the flames.

However, he is a bit miffed at Riza.  Starting fires is his job.  He considers lobbing balls of flame at a couple of the other tents, but decided to leave that for the moment, as he waits to see what the others will do bout the humies and the big cat in their target tent.

Night 7: The Plains of the Paynims

Riza continues her progress around the northern side of the camp and another tent at the northwest edge of the camp begins to burn and shouts of anger and screams of fear start from inside. Meanwhile the guard (m1) shovelling sand with his shield manages to extinguish the flames on the first northern tent that had caught fire.

The giant Minmorc drops his bow, grabs battleaxe and greatspear and trots over to the closest tent at the southeast edge of the campsite.

Dregz peeks inside the big eastern tent again then Moffdust slits the back corner of that tent open enough for a goblin to easily enter. Swarms of rats pour out of the sand around her and pour into the well-lit tent past her. Moffdust slips in after them. "Der woman has der Magic Stick!" Dregz hisses urgently at Moffa as his kinswoman rushes past him. A lot of swearing and shouting and snarling and squeaking erupts inside that tent.  Oopses and Arlein remain hidden behind that tent.

Jurz joins in the fun by activating a wand that produces a flame in his open hand. Then he throws the flame at the next big tent south of the campfire. It immediately begins to burn on one corner of the tent.

The giant Bulldust peers over the top of the tents to see what's happening then drops his guisarme and moves forward between the tents to the edge of the campfire light, readying his white-tipped flail as he goes.

The shouting of men and screaming of women and children throughout the camp growslouder and louder with each passing second. Men start pouring out of the tents armed with their scimitars, some carrying shields as well and a few carrying bows. None are wearing any armour, just the lose cotton robes that they sleep in. A few women and children scurry out of some of the tents and head toward the campfire in the middle of camp but the biggest group of these is from the one big tent that Jurz set fire to. A total of six women and two children fled out of that big tent. Four men came from the big northern tent and one man (m5) came from the big tent to the west of the campfire. He is obviously someone important as he starts shouting orders and holds up his scimitar, which is instantly sheathed in flames. He is soon surrounded by seven other men including one (m6) who also wields a glowing scimitar.

Three men emerge from tends near the big eastern one and spot Jurz, Rog and Dregz where they are illuminated by the light spilling out the slit in the big eastern tent. Those three warriors converge from the south toward the goblins.

Four other warriors spot the giant Bulldust where he is silhouetted against the glow of that big eastern tent and they rush toward him from north and south. But the giant bugbear is ready for them. He swings his white-tipped flail at each one in rapid succession before they can even get within striking distance of him. Three of them are badly injured and collapse on the ground, including the young man (mA) who tried to flee from the big eastern tent. The long-haired, middle-aged woman who follows him out of the tent sees him fall and ducks off northward to avoid the same fate.

Night 7: The Plains of the Paynims

Arlein the cat dashes away between the tents towards the north, paralleling the course taken by the long-haired old lady from the big eastern tent.

Riza steps back near the horses then takes aim and fires an arrow at the human leader (m5) wielding a flaming scimitar. The arrows hits him in the back. He gasps then whips around to glare at the flaming tent where the arrow seemed to have come from.

Moffa offers some advice from inside the tent. "Youse should gets youseselfs away from dis tentses. I dont knows where dese ratses is goin next. An wes gotta gets de hairy ole womans cos shes got Dregsies sticks!" Then she slits a hole in the northern wall of that big tent and recites a brief incantation to send two little glowing missiles to strike the long-haired old lady in the back. She is now moderately wounded but keeps running.   Dregz joins Moffa inside the tent moments later.

Rog bites the closest warrior (m22), grievously wounding the man then backs off a few feet behind the tent while Jurz recites the words that conjure a flaming scimitar in his hand. The light from that fiery weapon is as bright as a torch and clearly illuminates everything within 20 feet.

Giant Minmorc strolls around the south-eastern tent, drops his greataxe and with his greatspear Vera he skewers one of the warriors (m20) that was trying to attack Jurz. He jiggles Vera to make the corpse dance, much to Minmorc's amusement.

Giant Bulldust lashes out with his giant flail to put down another one of that group of warriors (m21) then steps over his body to move back closer to Jurz. The warrior (m16) to Bully's west slashes at him as Bully retreats but the scimitar misses its target.

Although he is terrified and still cowering behind the big eastern tent, Oopses chants a short spell and suddenly there is the howling of several wolves just east and northeast of the campsite. Two more terrified women clutching terrified children scramble out of the two northeast tents and dart toward the well-lit centre of the campsite, away from the wolves.

The long-haired old woman joins a group of other women and children who have crowded into the well-lit space between the northern large tent and the chained slaves. There she stops and chants a prayer that completely heals the wounds she had suffered from rat bites and magic missiles.

Only three of the warriors have bows (m8, m11, m17) but one of them (m17) pushes past another group of frightened women and children near the well and takes aim at Bulldust. However his terror is evident as the arrow flies high over the giant bugbear’s head and vanishes into the darkness of the surrounding desert.

Six of the warriors are carrying spears (m1, m2, m9, m13, m19, m23). A couple of them (m13 and m19) move forward and hurl their spears at Bulldust as well. The first spear glances off Bully's black chain shirt and the second misses completely.

A group of four warriors lead by a scarred veteran dash forward at Bulldust from south of the well, with the veteran (m7) actually charging fearlessly at the giant bugbear. Bully's giant flail clobbers the first two (m7 and m18) but the mortally wounded veteran still manages to complete his charge and hits Bully with his scimitar before collapsing unconscious at Bully's feet.  The warrior that Bully missed before (m16) then darts forward over their bodies to slash at the giant bugbear once more but again his blade misses completely. Bully's flail doesn't miss him this time and that plucky warrior joins the growing heap of dead or dying humans in front of Bully. The warrior that Rog mauled so badly (m22) retreats from the battle into a tent behind Bully.

Meanwhile, just north of the well, the leader (m5) with the flaming scimitar takes charge of the largest group of warriors in the camp. He gestures angrily sending one man (m24) off toward the flaming tent and horse lines in search of the archer who shot at him. The leader (m5) quickly organises his men and they begin to advance toward the eastern zone where Bully, Jurz and Minmorc are fighting.

The man sent northwest (m24) scouts around the burning tent and soon closes in on Riza where she is clearly illuminated by the blazing tent. He snarls angrily at the little lizardgirl and advances with his scimitar in hand. The horses nearby are starting to whinny and rear in panic as the flames engulf the nearby northwest tent.

Night 7: The Plains of the Paynims

Giant Minmorc finally loses control of his temper and starts to twitch and foam at the mouth. He strides forward between the tents then thrusts his greatspear at the human leader (m5) with the flaming scimitar, grievously wounding him. Moments later giant Bulldust steps a pace or two closer and brings his white-tipped flail down in a devastating blow on the human leader's head. The man is killed instantly and his body falls to the ground. The flame of his scimitar also dies as the enchanted weapon falls from his lifeless fingers.

Arlein scurries into the big northern tent  just as Jurz rides Rog around past Minmorc then past the attacking warriors and the archers behind them. Jurz slashes at one of the warriors as Rog races past but the warrior just manages to dodge the weapon of flame.

The rest of the goblins (Dregz, Moffa and Oopses) watch the fun from inside or behind the big eastern tent, with Moffa reciting the words of another spell as she peers out the slit in the tent wall.

On the other side of the camp Riza's anger boils up in her as well and she hisses like some sort of serpent from the pits of hell as she slashes savagely at the warrior (m24) sent to get her. Her claws slice through his thin cotton robe and slash his chest in a grievous wound that leaves him gasping and barely able to stay on his feet. He slashes at her desperately with his scimitar but loses his grip on the scimitar and the weapon flies away over Riza's head into the darkness. The desperate move rips his wound open even further and Riza is sprayed with blood as the warrior collapses to the ground, slowly bleeding his life away.

One of the warriors (m23) turns and flees from Bully and Minmorc but the rest of the warriors stay brave and press forward to attack. The veteran soldier (m6) with the glowing scimitar takes charge and leads the attack against giant Bully while a younger warrior (m9) leads the attack against giant Minmorc. Bulldust's flail thumps three of them as they rush forward, killing two (m12 and m10) and seriously wounding the veteran with the magical scimitar (m6). Two of them (m6 and m4) manage to get close enough to attack Bulldust with the humble warrior (m4) managing to seriously wound the giant bugbear!

Minmorc skewers one of the warriors (m9) rushing at him but three others close in and attack him, including the two leather armoured warriors (m1 and m2) who were on guard duty.  Fortunately for the giant orc they almost seem to get in each other's way as they rush in and all three of them miss him completely.

Jurz suddenly finds himself the target of a trio of archers (m8, m11 and m17) lead by one who seems to be another veteran (m8) wielding a beautifully crafted shortbow. He shoots an arrow at Rog and hits him in the shoulder inflicting a nasty wound. One other archer misses Rog and the other would have hit Jurz but the arrow fails to penetrate the goblin’s current tough, bark-like exterior.

The terrified women and children back away from the fighting and congregate in a frightened mass on the northwest side of the fire lit area. The long-haired old woman scowls at them but stands her ground and pulls out a slender wand from inside her robe. She glances at it and scowls again, then pulls out another wand as well. She faces the fighting with one wand gripped tightly in each hand and her large, ornamental, necklace glowing brightly on her chest.

A faint shimmer begins to appear at the edge of the firelight 20 feet east of the long-haired old woman as Moffa's summoned hound begins to materialise.

The long-haired old lady (middle-aged actually, but much older than any of Team Arda-Nuff) has a woven breastplate-type ornament on a necklace around her neck. Light is radiating from it in a 20ft radius and it is easy to spot a six inch segment of black rod woven into that ornamental necklace. The whole thing looks like some sort of mystical or religious symbol of some kind.

Night 7: The Plains of the Paynims

Jurz urges Rog forward to attack the westernmost archer (m11) but neither Jurz nor Rog manage to hit that archer.

Minmorc is infuriated that Bulldust 'stole' his kill on the leader with the flaming scimitar so he responds the same way, skewering and killing the man with the glowing magical scimitar (m6) right in front of Bully.

Bully retaliates by squashing the other human warrior (m4) in front of himself and informing Minmorc how their tallies are progressing. Then he sticks a potion vial into his mouth, which will at least keep him quiet for a little while!

Moffdust scrambles through the slit in the north side of the big east tent and scurries northward around the next small tent to get closer to the long-haired old woman. Moffa's summoned dog materialises at the edge of the firelight 25 feet east of the long-haired old woman and, at Moffa's urging, charges straight in to attack her. The dog bites her on the leg and her loose cotton gown is stained red by her blood. Moffa follows up with a spell aimed at the second wand (in the woman's right hand) and the wand shoots out of her grip to fall on the sand at her feet.

Oopses chooses this moment to charge out from behind the big east tent and dash straight at that woman. As he reaches her he leaps up with his hands clutching for her bulky, glowing necklace but at the last moment she sees him coming and slaps him down with a stinging slap across the face that stops him in his tracks.

Meanwhile in the big eastern tent there is a sudden outburst of hissing, snarling and squeaking that suddenly goes quiet. Dozens of rats scurry out of the tent and disappear into hiding places throughout the campsite.  Dregz appears at the tent flap moments later with the words of a prayer on his lips. He points at the central campfire and suddenly a deluge of water lands straight on it, extinguishing the campfire in a cloud of steam. Now only the two burning tents, Jurz's flaming scimitar and the old woman's glowing necklace provide illumination in the campsite.

Riza races back around the northern side of the camp until she reaches a point on the northern side where she suddenly sees the old woman with the glowing necklace fighting Oopses and a big dog similar to the one Moffa has summoned in previous battles.

The long-haired old woman points her other wand at Oopses and the dog and shrieks something almost incomprehensible at them. [Language unknown: "Rut olwh!"] A broad jet of flames roars out of the wand at Oopses and the dog and one unlucky slave (s6) at the end of the line. Oopses and the slave are singed by the flames but the dog ducks underneath them completely.

One of the archers (m17)turns and flees from Jurz and Rog but the other two archers stay to fight. The one Jurz attacked (m11) steps back between his sergeant (m8) and the dead campfire and they both shoot at Jurz. One arrow (from m8) hits Jurz in the thigh inflicting a nasty wound.

One brave warrior (m13) steps over the fallen bodies of his leaders to swing his scimitar at Bulldust but misses the giant bugbear completely. Three other warriors (m1, m2 and m19) continue to attack Minmorc and one of them (m2) manages to jab the giant orc with his spear.

The rest of the women, children and cowards are mostly cowering in the northwest quarter of the campsite and the slaves are still lying in their chains north of the extinguished campfire.

The wounded bugbear squeezes between m13 and the big tent where the rats just came out.  He offers advice in common tongue to that brave man m13 as he pushes past.  "Do i ee an a wo i oo."  He skulks warily towards the archers until he's within his 10' reach of them then twirls his flail menacingly. Night 7: The Plains of the Paynims

Further enraged by being stabbed by a spear, giant Minmorc steps back a pace to give himself room to stab Vera straight through the heart of the offending warrior (m2), killing him instantly.

Giant Bully swings and misses the warrior in front of him but claims credit for another victim anyway and pushes past him to go and menace the two remaining archers instead. The warrior swings fiercely at Bulldust as he squeezes past but his scimitar does little more than rattle the steel links of the giant bugbear's chain shirt.

With the campfire extinguished Dregz finally feels free to focus on other things, so he marches out of the rat-infested eastern tent, wand in hand, ready to patch up Bulldust next round.

Jurz and Rog lunge forward at the less-experienced of the two archers. Jurz's scimitar of flame scorches the man's face and Rog's teeth bite hard on his neck. The archer (m11) collapses on the sand, bleeding profusely.

Moffdust cackles with glee and edges forward close enough to target Oopses with her magic wand. Suddenly Oopses grows to 6 feet tall; a full head taller than the long-haired woman (fA) in front of him. Moffa's summoned dog bites the woman savagely again on the same leg as before then Riza charges in from between the northern tents to spear the woman as well. She is more seriously injured and bleeding from several wounds. Oopses almost falls on top of the woman as he suddenly looms over her and she tries to slam him away again. They wrestle for a moment but Oopses doesn't manage to pin her down. Then Arlein the cat darts out of the big northern tent and leaps up at the woman's chest, clawing and biting at the ugly, great big, glowing necklace the woman is wearing.   Arlein bites through the thin leather band of the necklace and tears it free from the woman’s neck. But the old woman isn't going to let it go without a fight. She grabs the necklace but can’t tear it free from Arlein's jaws. Arlein ends up swinging from one end of the glowing necklace with the old woman gripping the other end tightly in her fist.

The veteran archer (m8) steps back away from Jurz and Rog and aims an arrow at the bigger target, Bulldust. Bully swings and misses with his white-tipped flail and the arrow glances harmlessly off Bully's blackened chain shirt.

The last armoured guard (m1) lunges forward with his spear at Minmorc just manages to pierce the giant orc's breastplate.

The other two warriors (m13 and m19) decide the battle is lost and make a run for it. Minmorc skewers one of them (m19) with his greatspear Vera but the other one (m13 escapes between the tents towards the east and is promptly joined by the badly wounded warrior (m22) who previously hid in one of the small tents in the east of the camp.

That is the last straw for the terrified women and children in the northwest corner of the campsite. They suddenly turn and flee past the burning tent and toward the north and northwest. Their terrified screams draw out another 14 women and children that were hiding in the tents and they join the desperate exodus running away from the camp toward the north and west as well. All the screaming is the final straw for the string of horses closest to the burning tent and they finally break free and join the screaming horde of women and children fleeing the campsite.

OOC: Main Game Map updated. The slaves are all still lying on the ground in their chains where they were sleeping before.

Partial update ...

Oopses crouches down and reaches to tickle the long-haired old woman under the armpits just as Riza slashes savagely at the woman's belly with her claws. The woman screams and collapses on the ground unconscious, Oopses stumbles over her body and falls on top of her legs and Arlein lands on the woman's chest with the big, ugly, glowing necklace still gripped by her sharp little teeth.

Giant Minmorc doesn't even bother to pull Vera out of the body of his last victim (m19) but just steps back and stabs the oversized spear straight through the chest of the man who just attacked him (m1). The two dead warriors finish up face to face with the greatspear pinning them closer together in death than they probably ever were in life.

Giant Bulldust takes a step closer to the last archer and smashes his white-tipped flail down on the man. The grievously wounded archer staggers but somehow refuses to go down.

The rest of the nomads (4 fleeing warriors and lots of screaming women and children) all run full speed away from the campsite and out into the darkness of the surrounding desert sand dunes. Nine horses broke free last round and gallop away into the darkness as well.

A couple of the women (f5 and f7) pause long enough to untie a horse each (h1 and h8) and are hurriedly leading those two horses (with their children c5 and c7 on the horses' backs) away toward the west. The other 39 horses are still tied up at the horse lines.

The 12 chained slaves are still lying or cowering where they were sleeping near the campfire.

Night 7: The Plains of the Paynims

Bulldust finishes off the retreating archer (m8), Minmorc chases down and slays the two warriors (m13 and m22) fleeing east of the camp and Riza finishes off the wounded woman (fA) and the last three wounded warriors that had not yet bled to death.

Moffdust's summoned dog vanishes again shortly after the battle is over.

Dregz examines the long-haired woman's glowing, woven necklace which has the 6-inch long segment of the black rod stitched onto it.

Jurz wanders around the campsite concentrating on locating all items with magical auras.

Bulldust begins searching the big tent to the west while Moffdust searches the big tent to the east.

Eventually all of the tents will be searched and the contents dragged out to a big heap near the campfire site. Most tents yield at least one suit of leather armour and a large shield as well as heaps of other personal possessions of the nomad tribesmen and their families. Two more women and one child are found hiding in a couple of the southern tents that were obviously too close to the fighting for them to escape when everyone else did.

Weapons and shields are collected from the slain warriors and added to the growing pile of loot. Apart from the magical items that Jurz locates, some of the most valuable things in the camp are probably the 39 light horses (including 24 light warhorses) still tethered at the horse-lines on the west side of the camp and the dozen slaves chained together near the campfire site.

Apart from whatever Bully and Moffa pull out of the big east and west tents the pile of loot includes:
  • 2 magical wands (One used by the long-haired old woman and the greased wand dropped by her.)
  • Magical flaming scimitar
  • Magical glowing scimitar
  • Masterwork mighty composite shortbow (+2 strength)
  • Masterwork quarterstaff
  • 2 x Masterwork chainmail
  • Masterwork studded leather
  • 2 x Masterwork heavy steel shield
  • 3 x Masterwork longspears
  • 22 scimitars, 10 shortbows, 12 quivers x20 arrows, 18 leather armour, 18 heavy wood shields, 10 short spears, 26 daggers
  • 200gp, 400sp, 300cp, 4x50gp gems and 20x10gp gems
  • Lots of other mundane possessions including 3 large tents and 17 small tents, clothing, boots, blankets, food, waterskins, saddles, etc.

Members of Team Arda-Nuff injured in this encounter are Bulldust (now only lightly wounded), Oopses (lightly wounded), Jurz (moderately wounded), Rog (moderately wounded) and Minmorc (moderately wounded).

OOC: Main Game Map updated. The directions that the fleeing nomads headed are indicated around the edges of the map.

Night 7: The Plains of the Paynims

Jurz rides Rog around collecting the magical items, if he is the one to find the two women and the child, he will chase them out into the night - they aren't a threat to him and he isn't into killing for the sake of killing.  However, he does cast Cure Minor wounds, to affect both himself and Rog, to help start closing their wounds over.

Once back he will concentrate on the wands, trying to work out what they do and if he can use them, as they are the only magical items he might be able to use.  The slaves and the horses don't really interest him, they aren't portable and he suspects that Dregz is going to magic them all away to some place soon.  Some place near home would be good though.

Instead, when the treasure is divvied up he points to one of the wands "I's want dat one."    and  tries to claim the rest of his individual share from the smaller more portable items.  However, he is happy to see the large items go into a party treasure sack, for sale and distribution later.

Once Minmorc has come down off his rage he will become aware of his injuries. He will cast cure light wounds and will use his wand to cast lesser vigor on himself. He will then drag the two soldiers back to camp, picking up his axe along the way. Seeing that others are busy finishing the wounded enemies and gathering the loot he will busy himself with possibly the most important task - he will start rebuilding the camps main fire and will slaughter a horse to roast over it.

When Bulldust leaves the leader's tent he has returned to normal size and put his potion vial away in his pocket.  His arms are full of treasure.  He adds to the pile the leader's very nice chainmail and shield from the western tent and more money bags, but he claims the leader's longspear for himself.  The plan (the dream) worked well - having the humans unarmoured helped a lot.

As he saunters past the chained slaves and comments in common tongue "I's not really a giant, jus a bugbear.  Was any of youse keepin count?"  He reckons he may need witnesses if it comes to dispute with Min.  He retrieves his goose-hook and helps to search the tents, eventually arriving at the fire pit where Oopses is cooking.  He takes a slab of roast horse orally and glowing bones nasally.  This starts his bandaged nose bleeding once again.  "Ow Moffa!"  He looks sheepishly at Dregz again.  "Can yer do da stick fing again Dregzie?  Else its never gonna heal up wiv her around."

The slaves cower away from Bully as he talks to them but one scrawny little man dares to reply.

"No, master. It was too many and too fast to count. Please master, don't eat us! Those wicked men you have slain were taking us to sell to the slave traders at Kester. Sadly all of the equipment is human-sized, so nothing is the right size for Riza or the goblins to use. Of course there are plenty of ordinary items of other kinds that are usable by small people as well (a lot of them are designed for human children, actually) and Riza finds a good assortment of small knives around the camp.

The talkative slave considers Minmorc's question for a moment before answering.

"Some of the foolish ones will probably flee out into the desert. They will probably die of thirst within a few days. A few might manage to catch some of the horses that escaped. They would probably keep going eastward to the last place we camped. Most probably will not have gone far at all, just beyond these dunes or the next ones, where they will probably hide until you leave. Then most of them will probably return to this campsite to salvage anything you have left behind, for these are all their worldly possessions."

The talkative slave is a bit crestfallen when he realises that Minmorc still plans to sell him to the slavers when they reach Kester, but he soon rallies and tries again.

"Please Master, will you set me free when we reach Kester if I help you sell all the goods and horses and the other slaves you have captured? If you sell the horses and slaves to merchants they will give you half the price they could be sold for. That is the only way you will be able to trade things like weapons, armour, tents and other ordinary gear. But horses and slaves are as good as gold if you know how and where to sell them. I was a merchant before these nomads captured me, so I do know how and where to sell horses and slaves. I can sell them for you and earn you 75 gold for each of those horses and 150 gold for the ones that are trained for battle. All of the adult slaves can be sold for 100 gold each and 50 gold for the child. Don't worry about them having friends in the town. These are Paynim nomads but the people in Kester are Ullites. They have no love for the Paynims but they will trade with anyone, even with you! Please Master, if you will set me free I will earn more gold for you than you would get for selling me!"

A couple of horses are butchered and various bits roasted or smoked over the campfire. Everyone feasts on roast horse meat and Rog has a feast of his own of uncooked horse's hooves and offal. Quite a few rats creep out from their hiding places around the camp and gorge themselves on the scraps as well, although Oopses spoils their fun a bit when he buries a lot of the remaining scraps in the morning.

Guards are set through the remainder of the night and the following day but there are no unwelcome visitors to disturb everyone's rest.

As the first light of dawn lightens the eastern sky those who are still awake see the jagged outline of a great mountain range that forms the eastern horizon. It is probably only a day's walk to the east of this campsite.

Minmorc heads out at dawn on to scout around the surrounding area and Riza tags along They return about half an hour later from the dunes to the north herding 15 terrified nomad women and 3 children.  They quickly head out to complete their sweep south of the cam and return with 2 more nomad women and another 2 children.

The prisoners are quickly secured by roping them together but several are used to help pack up everything of value and load the horses for travel as the sun sets.

The talkative slave (whose name is Abbu bin Dhehr) proves to be an excellent guide and successfully leads Team Arda-Nuff from one waterhole to the next and so on over the following four nights (Nights 8 to 11 of this adventure). They travel northeast along the foothills of the eastern mountain range during this time. Everyone (including the slaves and prisoners) travels on horseback to

Sometime before the dawn of Day 12 he suggests that they halt to rest for a few hours because they are nearly at the town of Kester. It would be best to wait until daylight before approaching the town as the guards at the gate will not allow entry during the hours of darkness.

OOC: Everyone is fully healed. I will pause at this point to allow discussion of the group's plans for trading your goods and slaves, etc. If anyone has any other actions or preparations they want to have taken over the four days and nights of travel you can say so here.

Day 12: Trading at Kester

Team Arda-Nuff all end up agreeing that Abbu bin Dhehr will be set free after he helps them sell all the rest of the slaves, prisoners and horses in Kester. So Team Arda-Nuff and their whole convoy of horses laden with slaves, prisoners and equipment approaches the western gates that control the road through Kester.

Abbu bin Dhehr deftly handles the questions of the guards at the gate to allow this band of armed humanoids into Kester to trade. The guards are not at all concerned about the Peynim women and children prisoners as there is obviously no love lost between the Peynims and the Ullites of Kester. Armed humanoids are a different story, though. After some animated debate Abbu and the guards finally agree that these humanoids must be escorted by a squad of 10 armed guardsmen while they are within the town, they must pay a fee of 100 gold pieces for this escort, they must all stay together wile in town and they must all leave the town before the gates close at sunset today. Abbu begs Team Arda-Nuff to accept these terms as it is the only way they will be allowed to enter.

Assuming that deal is agreed to, Abbu leads them all into town and heads straight to the horse market. In less than two hours he has successfully sold all of the 13 light riding horses and 24 light warhorses for the princely sum of 4,575gp.

Then he says the slave market is just about to open for trading so he leads the Team and their slaves and armed escort through town to the slave market. An hour later he has managed to sell all of the other original slaves (11 male humans) and the Peynim prisoners (17 women and 5 children) for another 3,050gp.

Then comes another four hours of haggling with all sorts of merchants and traders in the central marketplace of the town. Abbu manages to sell everything else the Team wants to sell at the normal rate of half market price.

Bulldust had decided to claim the leaders magical shield as part of his own share and Moffdust wanted to keep the unidentified wand as part of hers, but apart from that everything else was to be sold.

The sale price of the rest of the gear is as follows:
Wand of burning hands (735/2=367.5gp)
+1 flaming scimitar (8,315/2=4,157.5gp)
+1 scimitar (2,315=1,157.5gp)
+1 shortbow [+2str] (2,525/2=1,222.5gp)
+1 chainmail (1,300/2=650gp)
+1 heavy steel shield (1170/2=585gp)
2 x Masterwork chainmail (2 x 300gp = 1,200/2=600gp)
Masterwork studded leather (175/2=87.5gp)
Masterwork heavy steel shield (170=85gp)
Masterwork quarterstaff (600/2=300gp)
4 Masterwork longspears (4 x 305gp = 1,220/2=610gp)
22 scimitars (22x15gp=330/2=165gp),
10 shortbows (10x30gp=300/2=150gp),
12x20 arrows (12/2=6gp),
20 leather armour (20x10gp=200/2=100gp),
20 heavy wood shields (20x7gp=140/2=70gp),
10 short spears (10x2gp=20/2=10gp),
26 daggers (26x2gp=52/2=26gp)
2 large tents (2x30gp=60/2=30gp)
17 tents (17x10gp=170/2=85gp)
Other miscellaneous gear = 50gp
Subtotal = 10,514.5gp
Horses = 4,575gp
Slaves = 3,050gp
Coins and gems = 1,605gp
Total = 19,744.5gp
Minus 100gp entry and escort fee
Grand total = 19,644.5gp

After all the profits are shared out between Minmorc, Bulldust, Moffdust, Jurz, Dregz, Riza and Oopses (taking into account the extra 585gp they could have got for the shield Bully already claimed) they each receive a share of approximately 2,890gp (2,305gp for Bully).

By now it is about 2 o'clock in the afternoon, leaving about 3 hours for everyone to buy whatever they want before the guards start escorting them all back to the gates to leave town before sunset. Kester is large enough to be considered a small city with 8,600 inhabitants and most items up to a market price of 15,000gp can be found here.

Day 12: Trading at Kester

To appease Moffdust, Abbu first heads for a wizard who trades in magic wands, scrolls and potions. They leave the unknown wand with the wizard to identify it and to put a price on it. The process will take an hour and cost Moffdust 110gp. When they return later and Moffa hands over the gold the wizard tells her it is a Wand of Scorching Ray with 25 charges remaining. He would pay up to 1,125gp to buy it off her but reluctantly tells her the command word if she does decide to keep it.

Abbu immediately calculates that this extra piece of treasure means all seven humanoids in Team Arda-Nuff are entitled to an additional share of 160gp and 7sp, so now the basic shares for everyone are 3,050gp and 7sp each, before subtracting the value of items that individuals want to keep (i.e. 585gp for Bully's +1 shield, 1,125gp for Moffa's wand of scorching ray and 1,157gp 5sp for the medium-sized +1 glowing scimitar that Oopses timidly claims for himself).

The gauntlets of ogre power that Minmorc and Bully want can be bought for 4,000gp for each pair of gauntlets. The modified (spiked) pair of gauntlets of ogre power that Minmorc wants will cost an extra 305gp and take an hour for a skilled blacksmith to fashion and install those spikes as it turns out that anything less than masterwork quality spikes would ruin those magical gauntlets.

A gnomish trader is found who owns a small-sized, magic, mithril chain shirt that Dregz dearly wants to buy. Abbu wisely insists on dealing with the gnome alone without letting him know the purchase is for a goblin and agrees on a price of 2,100gp to secure this prized item for Dregz.

The magical haversack that Jurz wants to buy is even easier for Abbu to find and he quickly secures one for the sum of 2,000gp.

All the other smaller purchases that various people want to make are quickly taken care of too, including potions, scrolls, ammunition, alchemical items, food and drink, etc.

OOC: Everyone can now spend their money on just about anything they want (or exchange coins for gems or other valuables of equal value) and update their own character sheets accordingly.

Day 12: Trading at Kester

Though Dregz (now looking very hairy indeed, a sure sign of Bargrivyek's favour - must be all that praying, look at Minmorc) didn't want to go shopping and hadn't intended on spending a single coin.  Indeed, the priest wanders through the market place spellbound, listening to all the bustle and chatter going on around him more than the wares that are offered.  But before him dawns that shiny, oh so shiny mailcoat, and once he sets eyes upon it he just has to have it ... though he gets Abbu to sell his old mundane armour to soften the blow.

And after that, there's no stopping him.  Their pet slave is set to work, first when the little goblin spies a lustrous pearl, and then to bicker over a brace of potions that the owner personally guarantees to work as advertised.

Finally, the crowning glory, a backpack !  Worn and cracked it might be, old it most certainly is ... but to the little goblin it is a fitting vessel to house his Holy Book, which is dutifully ensconced in the main compartment, still wrapped about in the old sack which has seen it safe thus far.

"Der next bit of der Magic Stick is South !" Dregz announces excitedly as Abbu speaks of the carpet owned by the Amir of Kanak.  "Definitely in der desert ... looked pretty wild and nasty where we're going ... don' suppose this Amir lives in a ruined tower ?"  The goblin tells of the vision he has been sent, growing clearer day by day ...

You dream of a bleak landscape that is like a desert of powdery grey ash. The only breaks in this bleak landscape are some sort of ruined building ahead of you and the silhouette of a mountain range behind you. A howling wind rises quickly and soon starts to whip the ash around you in blinding clouds that sear your lungs and sting any exposed flesh. The ruined building looks like the only possible place to escape from the wind.

... and upon that recounting immediately demands Abbu hurry to buy him a cloak, though all he can afford is a thin cotton affair, and even that has him counting out coppers.

Day 12: Trading at Kester

OOC: Is everyone ready to move on? Everyone is at full hit points and clerics will have prepared spells for today. Does anyone want to edit spell selections first, or buy anything else or make any other preparations?

Day 12: Trading at Kester

Hearing about the ash in Dregz vision Minmorc will tear up one of his sacks to make a bandanna mask and will offer the rest of the rags to the rest of the party if they want to do the same. Helmet jammed back on his head and Vera in hand Minmorc is ready to go.

"We's wants some googly-goggles." the goblin pipes up suddenly  "To keeps de ash out of ours eyes!  Dat sounds like the Hell Furnaces.  Dey have big lizards dat blows fire at youse, an dere is monsters dat lives under ash, and de humies wipe stinky stuff on dere faces.  And de nature gods don't go dere.  Dere's isn't any plants or proper stuff." he continues shivering at the very thought of a place with no plants.

"An we's needs some big goggles for Rog ... and a fishes bowl for Arlien ..." He continues rapidly running off a list of the first things that he can think of.

Day 12: Trading at Kester

With helmet on, one of Minmorc's dust-masks over his nose and mouth, his long hair all but covering his eyes, his massive pack upon his back and his cloak wrapped about him, Dregz looks ready for anything a desert of ash might throw at him ... though he looks up at Jurz's suggestion. "Dat sounds good," his muffled voice emanates, applauding his kinsman's quick thinking (now being in a position to recognise cleverness).

Day 12: Trading at Kester

Bulldust returns wearing Ogre Power gauntlets too and looks very pleased with himself.  He owes Moffa 600gp but does not feel any need to swear a blood oath to pay back his big sister ... she knows where he lives.  He takes one of Min's dust masks and also wants to buy goggles after hearing Dregz' vision and Jurz' suggestion.  Then he's ready to!

Moffdust blinks up at Abbu when he reveals the name Kanak! "Dats good Abbus. Wes will sees youse dere some days."

She buys a few potions and gets in on the face mask and goggles too, then she's ready to go. She whistles for Cat to come back and crowds in next to Dregz, ruffling his new-grown hair.

Day 12: Trading at Kester

With all of their trading and shopping completed Team Arda-Nuff find themselves ready to depart about half an hour before sunset. They gather together, clustered around Dregz in the marketplace of Kester, with their escort of ten guardsmen and the ex-slave Abbu bin Dhehr standing back about ten feet away from them.

Dregz holds the black rod in one hand, opens his holy book with the other, squints at the book then utters a single word – "Wyrd!"

With just a slight rush of air Team Arda-Nuff vanishes from sight, much to the consternation of the ring of guardsmen that was supposed to be keeping them under guard.
