Night 12: The Sea of Dust

The faint rush of air and slight feeling of nausea that accompanies teleportation by the black rod doesn't feel as bad this time. You must be getting used to it.

You look around at your new surroundings. It is a bleak landscape that is like a desert of powdery grey ash. The only breaks in this bleak landscape are some sort of ruined building about 80 feet ahead of you and the silhouette of a mountain range behind you. Actually, there are broken pillars of stone sticking up 5 to 10 feet out of the ash around you, too

A howling wind rises quickly and soon starts to whip the ash around you in blinding clouds that sear your lungs and sting any exposed flesh. The ruined building looks like the only possible place to escape from the wind. You can just make out some darker patches around the base of the building, near the middle of it, that might be openings into a lower, darker level of the building not quite buried beneath the deep drifts of grey ash that surround you.

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

As they approach the building they see that it looks like the lower levels of a building that was once significantly taller. The walls rise up 10 to 20 feet above the grey ash that covers the ground. The floor of what might once have been the second level of the building is now only a couple of feet above the new ground level of ash outside. All windows have been shattered long ago. The roof and any upper floors above this level have collapsed and are covered in at least a foot of ash over the whole building.

The dark spaces, which could barely be glimpsed from the point where the Team arrived, prove to be openings into what was originally the ground floor of this building. The openings are barely two feet high at the northern edge of the building but in the middle of the building there is a large open space that extends 20 feet into the building with a low balcony rail around the south, east and west sides of this open area. The ash slopes down as you look southward into this area and the opening into the lower level reaches 6 feet in height at the southern edge of this area.

Looking into the lower level you see that it forms three separate chambers extending south, east and west from this central open space. The grey ash continues to slope downward into these chambers at a rate of about 1 foot drop per 5 feet away from the open area, so the last ten feet or so of each of these chambers has little more than a few inches of ash covering the floors.

The light is poor (low light) in each of these lower chambers but that won't present a problem for any of Team Arda-Nuff.

Riza and Minmorc (and Arlein riding on Minmorc’s shoulders) are now close enough to see there is some sort of large stone altar near the southern end of the south chamber. A single door can be seen in the eastern wall of the eastern chamber and a similar door in the western wall of the western chamber.

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

The tracks that Minmorc finds in the southern chamber are more like a churned trail about 2 to 3 feet wide across the surface of the grey ash slope. It looks like there are either:
  • two separate trails to and from the eastern chamber with one of those trails extending further into the western chamber and back; or
  • one trail that runs from the western chamber to the southern then the eastern, back to the southern then the eastern again, then back through the southern to the western chamber again.

Minmorc can't tell what it was or which way it was travelling.

Riza moves across to the southwest edge of the eastern chamber and can see those tracks winding down into and circling round inside that eastern chamber but can't see any sign of life in there at the moment.

Dregz and Oopses follow Minmorc down the slope into the southern chamber (Oopses in the inimitable style that obviously earned him his name!) while Jurz and Rog lead the rest of Team Arda-Nuff forward in their wake.

The bat flies off wherever it will, its small squeaks fading as it leaves the south room. "I doesnt likes it here. Looks like humies made dis places." She notices where Dregz stick is pointing. "Does dat means wes has to digs?" she asks dubiously. She looks at Bully sniffing around in the corners. He likes to dig holes, but he'd probably get buried alive if he tried to dig in this dust.

She takes out a fistful of wands to hold in her left hand but casts Detect Magic and focuses her attention towards the south end of the room where Minmorc is.

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

Moffdust's spell initially indicates that yes, there is definitely magic down at the southern end of the southern chamber but she soon realises it is only what Minmorc, Bulldust and other members of the team have brought in with them. There is no sign of any other magical auras in the southern chamber.

There are two doors in the southern wall of the southern chamber, one in the eastern wall of the eastern chamber and one in the western wall of the western chamber but nothing leading directly to the north where the black rod is pointing, because the northern end of the building is completely buried in ash. If the team wants to explore other areas they will need to decide which way they want to go.

It should be noted that the ash is only loose and soft for the first few inches below the surface. Below that it is packed hard enough to walk on.

Minmorc will conclude his search of the room by giving the altar a good kick. Setting his gaze on the eastern door in the southern chamber Minmorc will take a couple of seconds to properly prepare for some dungeon delving. Careful not to disturb his rider Minmorc will stow his spear carefull and will withdraw the Axe wife. Focusing his small well of magical power Minmorc will softly pray to Nuffle for first a blessing upon the the party then for additional divine favor for himself. Axe in hand and cat on shoulder he will then move over to the door and try to open it.

The southeast door that Minmorc tackles is designed to open inward into this chamber. It is held in place by a sturdy bar on the inside, which Minmorc can easily remove. The door seems stuck but Minmorc pulls on it with great determination and finally it swings open to reveal a solid wall of densely packed grey ash behind the door, completely blocking that exit.

When Bulldust enters the western chamber he notices some fairly obvious tracks leading down toward the door at the far western end of that chamber. The broader churned up tracks that circle through all three chambers wipe out those other tracks for most of their length.

The western door is free of the grey ash and Bully is able to pull it open easily. It leads to a small landing at the top of a set of stairs that leads down into darkness towards the south. There is also another door on the western side of the landing.

The ash is looser near the top of the doorway and Minmorc can easily poke his axe through to see daylight (it is only about 5:30pm at present, so it is still light outside) just above the top of the doorway. The ash would be about 6 feet deep outside this doorway. His axe can fairly easily chop through the lower levels of ash too but it is like digging through packed earth and does indeed raise a thick dustcloud around him too.

Cat the bat has flown around through all the three lower level chambers without showing any sign of finding anything that alarmed or excited it.

The door found by Moffa in the southeast corner of the western chamber is at least two-thirds buried by the slope of grey ash sloping down into these three chambers. It would probably be easy enough to clear those 3 or 4 feet of ash but it would take quite a while and would stir up huge clouds of choking ash and dust that would make it a very unpleasant task.

The western door beyond the landing at the top of the western stairs proves much the same as the ones Minmorc has previously opened. A solid wall of packed ash lies directly behind that door too. Enough spills down onto the landing to make it difficult to close that door again and will take a bit of work to clear enough to close that door. The landing was previously clear of ash but it and the top stairs are now covered by a heavy dusting of ash that is already marked by the footprints of Minmorc and Bulldust.

Minmorc and Bully lead the way downstairs and find a 5 foot wide corridor leading east for 80 feet. There are 6 doors in the northern wall , which all stand open, and two closed doors in the southern wall.

The first four doors open to four separate rooms, which are as follows:
1. 15 x 15 room with four 6ft benches, 2 chairs and a lectern.
2. 15 x 15 room with 2 tables, 4 benches and 4 chairs.
3. 10 x 15 room with an oven and two side tables.
4. 5 x 10 room with shelves stacked with dry remains of food.

The 5th door on the north side (0 on the map) opens to reveal a long corridor leading north with more doors on both sides and two openings on the eastern side.

The sixth door on the north side (door 25) opens to a storeroom full of piles of folded brown cloth.

The two southern doors (42 and 43) are locked.

At the eastern end of the first corridor there is a bend then the corridor continues east again. The first northern door after the bend (also marked 0 on the map) leads to another northern corridor with more doors and openings.

The eastern corridor after their bend has another 8 doors on the north wall and 8 more doors on the south wall, all of which as closed.

Bully can't smell anything interesting - it all just smells musty - but Dregz's black rod points straight up the first northern corridor.

Oopses, Minmorc, Riza, Bully and Moffa can see 4 purple mushrooms as big as goblins bunched together in front  of the southernmost wall of area 19. Everyone else can hear them but not see them yet. Note that it is dark down here so anyone with lowlight vision will need a light source.

OOC: Riza and Raven were the only characters in the group who have lowlight vision not darkvision. The redcaps had a lowlight lamp that only sheds dim light in a 20ft radius, so I assume Riza would now have that piece of equipment

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

When the shriekers start their noise the responses of various members of Team Arda-Nuff are as varied as their own natures. Oopses  joins in their chorus, Moffdust draws a wand as though she is their conductor and Dregz sticks his hands over his ears and moans in tune with their shrieking. Riza handles the lighting (low light to suit the ambience of the venue). Bulldust is unimpressed and walks out on the performance while Jurz and Rog stand by as ushers or bouncers to handle any uninvited guests.

Minmorc is the only one who objects violently to the musical interlude and he steps into the room to hack the closest one of the purple mushrooms (v1) apart with his greataxe.

The second front-line fungus responds in kind by lashing at Minmorc with four 10-foot long tentacles. Two of the tentacles strike the big orc leaving bloody welts across his skin

Moffa reacts instantly to the violet fungus's attack. Even as its tentacles are lashing Minmorc she points her wand and a scorching ray of fire burns deeply into the violent fungus. Although badly damaged it is still alive and thrashing its tentacles about.

It is now obvious that there were two violet fungi and two shriekers, which are still shrieking.

At the back of the group Jurz suddenly becomes aware of a brighter light in the corridor behind them and moments later an unexpected visitor arrives at the southern door to this northern corridor. The black figure holds a glowing rapier in one hand and, remarkably, the figure looks just like Raven.

OOC: Main game map updated. Everyone has the benefits of a Bless spell previously cast by Minmorc (+1 to hit and +1 on saves vs fear) for 14 more rounds.

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

Jurz and Dregz turn their attention to the unexpected arrival of Raven behind them. They question her about Grakk the minotaur and how and why she is now here, but she seems even more confused than they are. The last she remembers was dreaming of this group here in the ruins in a desert of ash, then she woke up here and came quickly down to join them.

Meanwhile, Bully swings into action with his goose-hook to finish off the second violet fungus(v2), Moffa fries the shrieker (s2) behind it with another scorching ray from her wand and Minmorc shrugs off the effects of the violet fungus’s attack to leap in at hack apart the other shrieker (s1) with his greataxe. Moffa’s fried mushroom is still shrieking (although it now sounds more like a punctured gas bag) so Riza leaps in to finish it off with her spear.

Finally there is silence, broken only by the excited chatter of Team Arda-Nuff speculating on whether the magic stick was responsible for Raven’s sudden arrival and other, more important topics like the best recipe for Scream of Mushroom Soup.

OOC: Main game map updated. Room 19 has several writing desks pushed into the corners and numerous empty shelves on the walls. Room 18 is bare except for a few wooden racks that might once have held weapons and wooden frames that might have supported archery targets or something similar.

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

Dregz and Moffa follow Raven into the room (#11) to try to work out what she is talking about. The black rod in Dregz's hand stays trained on the middle of the western wall, although to the casual observer it would probably look like it was pointed at Raven! Moffa recites a brief incantation and starts scanning the room for magic.

Jurz opens a different door (#9) and reveals a storeroom full of bookshelves loaded with books, while Oopses is still busy loading his pots and pans with delicious shrieker mushrooms. (It looks like scream of mushroom soup is still on the menu for tonight.)

Meanwhile Bully, Minmorc and Arlein venture into the larger room (#12) with its 2 stone tables, coffin stack and stone sarcophagus. Minmorc and Bulldust unceremoniously push the lid off the stone sarcophagus to get at the riches they assume will have been interred with the corpse inside. There is indeed a corpse but any speculation about gold and jewels is immediately pushed from their minds as a vaguely humanoid shadow lashes out at Minmorc!

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

In the room (#12) where Minmorc and Bully had loosed a shadow from the stone sarcophagus, the shadow is damaged but not destroyed by Bully's flail. That doesn't phase the shadow at all but the scary cat (Arlein) is another story altogether. Perhaps the shadow was allergic to cats in its previous life, or perhaps it is the light that Riza brings to the room – whatever the cause, the shadow flees across the room and disappears from view among the stack of coffins against the eastern wall.

Meanwhile, virtually the opposite effect occurs in the other room (#11). As Raven suddenly squawks a warning and retreats from the western wall and Dregz echoes her concern as he backs up as far as he can to the east, four figures suddenly lunge out of the western wall and attack Raven, Dregz and Moffa! Raven's attacker is a plate-armoured dwarf (d1) wielding battleaxe and shield. Dregz is attacked by a dire badger (db) with a leather-clad gnome (g1) close behind it waving a scimitar and wooden shield, while another gnome (g2) in chain shirt armour leaps out of the wall onto the stone table and stabs at Moffa with a shortsword. All four of them are yelling or roaring as they attack. Thankfully Raven's warning was just enough so they are not taken completely by surprise.

The dwarf's battleaxe slices through Raven's armour to cut deep and leave her grievously wounded.  Dregz has more luck and easily dodges the claws of the dire badger and Moffa flinches back just out of reach of the gnome's shortsword.

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

Raven's rapier glances off the dwarf's full-plate armour as the kenku ducks and dives for cover under the stone table.

Minmorc rushes into the room to occupy the spot just vacated by Raven, right in front of the heavily armoured dwarf (d1). But Minmorc swings his greataxe at the chain-shirted gnome (g2) standing on the stone table instead. She ducks beneath the wild swing and the axe barely grazes the back of her chain shirt.

Dregz wails in fear and prays to Bargrivyek as he slaps the dire badger (db) on the nose. His touch opens a deep and painful gash across the badger’s face.

Moffdust fights back the fear that the sight of gnomes evokes and dashes to Dregz's side to fire a scorching ray from her wand straight into the dire badger's face. The dire badger collapses on the floor at their feet.

Bulldust follows Minmorc's lead and rushes into the room right behind him. He too attacks the chain-shirted gnome (g2) standing on the stone table. His white-tipped flail whips her legs out from underneath her and she falls flat on her back on the table. Bully follows up with an overhand swing of his flail but she nimbly rolls aside in time to avoid being hit.

Outside the room Jurz leaps off Rog's back and recites a prayer causing a flaming scimitar blade to spring up from his hand while Oopses rushes up to see what is going on.

The gnome in studded leather (g1) behind the dire badger wails in anguish as the beast is overcome by Moffa's scorching ray. "Oh, Digby, no! I'll save you!" she cries then scrambles forward over the badger to swing her cudgel at Moffa! The little wooden club clonks Moffa on the head and Moffa reels from the blow.

The heavily-armoured dwarf (d1)suddenly finds himself confronted by a raging orc, which seems to be something he understands. He swings his battleaxe at Minmorc in a savage slash intended to slice open the orc's belly. The savage blow doesn't quite achieve that but does cut deep and leaves Minmorc seriously wounded.

However, the gnome (g2) on the stone table squeals in fright as she looks up at Bulldust and she agilely rolls back off the end of the table away from him. "What's going on here?" she scries. "That’s a damned minotaur! What's one of them doing here with a bunch of goblins and orcs? And a damned kenku, too!"

Suddenly the western wall of the room vanishes and a trio of identical, flying, robed gnomes (g3) can be seen weaving about in the air above a second stone table in the western part of the room. "Minotaur!" a male gnomish voice shouts above the noise of the fight. "Why are you here with these foul goblins and orcs? They cannot hope to defeat us! Join us and we will reward you well when they are defeated!"

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

Minmorc finally focusses on the dwarven fighter (d1) right under his nose and swings his greataxe down on that ironclad menace. Axewife bites deep, seriously wounding the dwarf.

Moffdust howls in pain and fires a scorching ray from her wand straight at the gnome (g1) that had hit just her on the head. The fiery ray scorches studded leather and exposed flesh leaving the gnome badly blistered (and moderately wounded). Dregz tries to stab the same gnome with his dagger but doesn't manage to find a way through the gnome's studded leather armour. Bulldust fares no better when he tries to sweep the same gnome off its feet with his white-tipped flail. Bulldust has to settle for verbally taunting the three flying gnomes (g3) instead, over their mistake of calling him a minotaur. Raven tries to stab that gnome too from under the table but finds the gnome is harder to hit than she looks.

Jurz squeezes between Bulldust and Minmorc, scrambles past Raven under the stone table (his flaming scimitar making sure that everyone gives him enough room to squeeze past) and pops out on the other side to slash it at the chain-shirted gnome (g2) who had just rolled back off the stone table. The flaming blade sears her skin through her chain shirt armour leaving her lightly wounded.

Outside the room Riza readies her bow as she looks for an opening into the fight and Oopses, Arlein and Rog can’t do much more than listen to the sounds of the battle.

The dwarf roars in pain and anger and slashes at Minmorc again with his battleaxe. But this time his wild swing bounces harmlessly off Minmorc's bright red breastplate.

The surrounded, outnumbered and seriously wounded female gnome (g1) is obviously very worried about her predicament and continues to focus on the goblin girl who is proving to be her nemesis. She swings her cudgel at Moffa again but this time she completely misses and comes closer to clobbering Dregz on the follow through.

The chain-shirted female gnome (g2) squeals in pain as Jurz burns her and she stabs back at him with her shortsword but her blade fails to cut the little druid’s magically toughened skin.

The weaving trio of flying gnomes (g3) are outraged by Bully's taunts and weave their hands in intricate gestures and speak words in a tongue that sounds familiar but incomprehensible to Bully. Finally they respond in words he can understand. "Not you, you stupid bugbear," they shout back. "I'm talking to the minotaur behind you!" Sure enough a big, bull-headed man now looms over Riza's shoulder peering into the room. "Mooo-Ok. Me join de brave gnomes. Mooove outa de way, yous evil monsters! Me coming through!"

She joins in with Bully in disbelieving the minotaur "If my brudder says youse not dere den youse not deres! Youse jus doesn't knows it yet."

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

OOC: Main game map updated to reflect Bulldust's current position on top of the stone table. Poor Raven is hidden somewhere under there - under Bully and the stone table.

Dregz's first reaction when he sees the minotaur is to assume it is Grakk somehow come to join them the same as Raven, but after the first glance it is obvious it is a different minotaur.

Bully convinces himself it is just a gnomish trick and attacks the female gnome (g1) again, this time tripping her then hammering her with his flail. Moffa follows up with a pair of magic missiles at her as well. Between these attacks the gnome (g1) is grievously wounded but somehow still refuses to give up the fight. (She is currently prone.)

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

OOC: Partial update. (Jurz, Riza and Arlein can still act this round)

Dregz's first reaction when he sees the minotaur is to assume it is Grakk somehow come to join them the same as Raven, but after the first glance it is obvious it is a different minotaur.

Bully convinces himself it is just a gnomish trick and attacks the chain-shirted female gnome (g2) again, this time tripping her then hammering her with his flail. (She is currently prone.)

Moffa follows up with a pair of magic missiles at the other female gnome (g1). By now, both the female gnomes (g1 and g2) are seriously wounded.

Minmorc has now really mastered the art of chopping dwarves while raging and again he chops down on the ironclad dwarven fighter with his greataxe. This time plenty of dwarven blood is spilled as the Axewife bites deep again. The dwarf (d1) falls over backward and crashes onto the stone floor, unconscious and bleeding profusely.

Oopses lives up to his reputation as he fumbles with a tindertwig in the corridor outside and Raven finally gets a chance to retreat to a safer spot near the door.

OOC: Main game map updated.

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

After Bully and Moffa play with the female gnomes and Minmorc flattens the dwarf it is Jurz's turn to play too. He pokes his fiery blade at the chain-shirted gnome (g2), burning her again. She is now grievously wounded.

After retreating to the doorway Raven is startled to see the minotaur lurking in the corridor outside. She responds instinctively, stabbing the minotaur with her glowing rapier. The minotaur grunts in surprise and a trickle of blood flows down his side from the wound.

Riza ignores the minotaur beside her and shoots an arrow at one of the three flying gnomes from the doorway. Unfortunately the gnome veers aside at the last second and the arrow just misses.

The minotaur looks at the gnomes and suddenly bellows, "Me coming to help gnomes! Get outa de way, all youse evil goblins and lizards and kenku!" Then he strides into the room, simply pushing Riza, Raven, Moffdust, Dregz and Jurz out of the way as he barges his way across the room. It steps right over the gnome (g1) that was in its way.  Bully takes the opportunity to lash out at the minotaur as it barges past and hits it solidly, leaving a great red welt on the minotaur's back. The minotaur bellows in pain at the blow but continues on toward the gnomes.

The studded leather-clad gnome (g1) turns her attention to Jurz behind her and swings her cudgel at him in a desperate effort to clear a way for her to retreat. Sadly for her, she misses.

The chain-shirted gnome winces in pain and quickly rolls away out of Bulldust's reach. She rolls underneath the flying gnomes and comes to a stop near the western end of the room where she quickly selects a small glass vial from her belt pouch.

The flying gnome triplets point at the minotaur and shout instructions. "Good minotaur! Well done. Now push them all out of here and lock the door behind them!"

The minotaur grunts acknowledgement, turns to face Jurz and lowers its head ready to charge.

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

OOC: Partial update. (Dregz, Riza, Raven and Oopses can still act this round)

Raven had stabbed the minotaur again with her rapier as it pushed past her, adding another little trickle of blood that the minotaur ignored.

Minmorc uses the dwarf's body as a stepping stone as he steps forward and swings his greataxe at one of the flying gnomes. The already bloody blade slices deep into the gnome's leg and the grievously wounded little gnome screams in agony. In fact, all three flying gnomes (g3) suffer the same injury and all open their mouths to voice that single scream.

A roaring hiss is heard from Arlein in the next room.

Bully clobbers the studded leather-clad gnome (g1) with his white-tipped flail then Moffa finishes her off with a pair of magic missiles. The gnome passes out and collapses on top of the unconscious dire badger.

The minotaur still stands with head lowered, poised to charge at Jurz, so Jurz steps out of his way, walks beneath the flying gnomes and swats the other gnome girl (g2) cowering in the corner with his fiery scimitar, as he starts to demand answers from her. Answers she won't be supplying as the pain of the burn she receives sends her into unconsciousness.

The minotaur makes no move as Jurz steps aside.

Raven hops up onto the first stone table then lunges forward over Bully's shoulder to stab the closest of the flying male gnome trio (g3). But the moment her blade pierces the gnome it simply vanishes! Raven ends up draped across Bully's left shoulder.

Then Riza steps into the room for a clearer shot and fires an arrow at one of the two remaining flying gnomes (g3). This time her arrow hits its target but the effect is exactly the same as for Raven. The gnome vanishes completely, leaving only one flying gnome in the room.

Moffa and her little bat, Cat, descend upon the bodies of the leatherclad gnome girl (g1) and the dire badger, only to discover that both are not quite dead yet. It is quickly obvious that the other gnome girl (g2) and the dwarf (d1) are still alive as well, although all four are mortally wounded and likely to die from blood loss soon.

The last flying gnome (g3) is in the back corner of the room, as far from the combat as he can get. He squeals in terror and pain (he is already grievously wounded by Minmorc) then amid a flurry of hand gestures he rattles off an incantation and he too vanishes from sight.

The minotaur remains motionless, still poised to charge eastward towards Moffdust and Dregz.

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

The battle is over – victory is complete – and all that is left to do is the mopping up.

Current status of Team Arda-Nuff is as follows:
  •   Arlein, Bulldust, Dregz, Riza and Rog unwounded
  •   Oopses is lightly wounded (down 1hp)
  •   Jurz is moderately wounded (down 8hp)
  •   Moffdust is moderately wounded (down 7hp)
  •   Minmorc is moderately wounded (down 16hp but slowly healing 11hp to be lightly wounded)
  •   Raven is grievously wounded (down 12hp)

The dwarf (d1) and the dire badger (db) are mortally wounded, unconscious and will bleed out in 4 rounds unless someone intervenes, one way or the other. The chain-shirted gnome girl (g2) and invisible male gnome (g3) are dead. The other gnome girl in studded leather (g1)is mortally wounded and unconscious but has been stabilised by Moffdust, who seems to want to keep her as a pet.

The minotaur remains completely stationary and silent for 2 more rounds then vanishes.

The shadow in room 12 shows no sign of wanting to come out from hiding among the coffins anytime soon, even if Arlein leaves the room.

The body of the invisible gnome (g3) is a bit difficult to search because the slightest touch sends it floating away, so Raven has to hang onto it with one hand and search with the other. She gets a nasty surprise when she searches inside the gnome's tunic and a little weasel tries to bite her fingers. The weasel becomes visible when it scurries out from hiding and sits protectively on the invisible, dead gnome's chest threatening to bite anyone who gets too close.

Moffdust scans for magic and slowly isolates all the magical auras on the bodies and equipment of the dwarf and gnomes. Apart from 3 magical auras on the body of the male gnome (g3) and one on the stabilised female gnome (g1) that must be spells cast upon themselves and still in effect, the magical items found are as follows:

Dwarf d1 (medium size):
  •   Spiked gauntlets: right gauntlet has moderate evocation aura

Gnome g1 (small size):
  •   Oak cudgel has faint transmutation aura
  •   Studded leather armour (bone studs) has faint abjuration aura (= +1 studded leather)
  •   Heavy wooden shield has faint abjuration aura (= +1 shield)
  •   Brown woollen cloak has faint abjuration aura

Gnome g2 (small size):
  •   Chain shirt armour has faint abjuration aura (= +1 chain shirt)
  •   Grey cloak has faint abjuration aura
  •   10 potions (6 x faint conjuration, 1 faint transmutation, 1 faint illusion, 1 faint adjuration)

Gnome g3 (small size):
  •   Wand has faint conjuration aura
  •   Bag of holding (type 1)
  •   2 scrolls of Knock (CL3)
  •   1 potion (faint conjuration aura)
  •   6" Segment of black rod, strong aura

Other equipment and treasure on the bodies is as follows:

Dwarf d1 (medium size):
  •   Full plate armour
  •   Heavy steel shield
  •   Masterwork battleaxe
  •   Masterwork heavy crossbow and 10 bolts
  •   Backpack
  •   Belt pouch
  •   50gp
  •   100gp gem

Gnome g1 (small size):
  •   Masterwork scimitar
  •   Masterwork light crossbow and 10 bolts
  •   Backpack
  •   Belt pouch
  •   2 antitoxins
  •   2 alchemists' fire

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

Once he is satisfied that Arlein has won the battle next door, and they are not liable to be attacked by an angry ghost, he will turn his attention to the dead gnomes in  this room.

”Nomeses runs away an dey pee an poo all over de cave.” Jurz says authoritatively as he lets the flaming blade blink out.  Once he has collected the loot from the gnome at his feet (G2), Jurz brings it across to one of the stone tables and lays it out.  ”Look.  She’s gots armour like me, an she’s got spells like me.  If youse keeps her, we’s all might get a flaming swordses up der jacksies whiles we is asleep!” the druid reminds Moffa.  However he looks over the gnome-druids gear.  ”Ise bets de club runs out of de magic in a few minuteses, cos dat looks like a shilling-ale-y”

However, he takes his buckler off and tries the heavy wooden shield out,  and waves the club about at the same time -  just to get a feel of how it might work in battle.

Instead, he starts looking hard at the cloaks.  "One grey one, one brown one and ...." the rhyme sort of fades out as he holds the two up in comparison.

Dregz's eyes dart about and he seems reluctant to believe that there aren't more invisible flying gnomes hanging about waiting to pounce, but eventually he relaxes just enough to sheathe his dagger and fetch out his magic stick, which he uses to heal the worst of the hurts his companions have suffered, wandering around and poking them with it as necessary, with only the occasional panicked upwards glance.

In between, the little goblin priest eyes the magic bag greedily, seeing it as a worthy receptacle for his Holy Book, but doesn't dare stake a claim until the bigguns have made their selections from the loot.

After 5 rounds of prodding with Dregz's magic stick everyone is nearly fully healed.
  •   Arlein, Bulldust, Dregz, Moffdust, Raven, Riza and Rog unwounded
  •   Oopses is lightly wounded (down 1hp)
  •   Jurz is lightly wounded (down 2hp)
  •   Minmorc is lightly wounded (down 7hp but slowly healing at 1hp per round and will end up only down 1hp)

The shadow in room 12 shows no sign of wanting to come out from hiding among the coffins anytime soon, even if Arlein leaves the room, although Oopses reports that Arlein obviously doesn't want to leave that room anyway.

A bit of experimentation with the two small cloaks reveals that both are cloaks of resistance. Moffdust carefully tastes and inspects all the potions and is eventually able to work out what they are:
  • 7 Potions of Cure Light Wounds (CL1)
  • 1 Potion of Cat's Grace (CL3)
  • 1 Potion of Invisibility (CL3)= Raven
  • 1 Potion of Hide from Undead (CL1)

The other magical items found (and who has claimed any so far) are as follows:
  •   Spiked gauntlets (medium size): right gauntlet has moderate evocation aura = Bulldust
  •   +1 Chain shirt armour (small)
  •   +1 studded leather armour (bone studs)(small)
  •   +1 Heavy wooden shield (small) = Jurz
  •   +1 Cloak of resistance (small, grey)
  •   +1 Cloak of resistance (small, brown woollen) = Jurz
  •   Wand has faint conjuration aura
  •   Bag of holding (type 1) = Dregz
  •   2 scrolls of Knock (CL3) = Moffdust
  •   6" Segment of black rod, strong aura = Dregz

Other equipment and treasure on the bodies is as follows:
  •   Full plate armour (to fit a dwarf)
  •   Heavy steel shield (medium) = Minmorc
  •   Masterwork buckler (small)
  •   Masterwork battleaxe (medium) = Minmorc
  •   Masterwork heavy crossbow (medium) and 10 bolts
  •   Masterwork short sword (small)
  •   Staff (small)
  •   Dagger (small) = Riza
  •   Backpack (medium size)
  •   3 Backpacks (small size)
  •   4 Belt pouches
  •   Spell component pouch
  •   Spellbook
  •   Masterwork thieves' tools = Raven
  •   Oak cudgel (small size; statistics as a club) = Jurz
  •   Masterwork scimitar (small)
  •   3 Masterwork light crossbows (small) and 3x10 bolts
  •   2 antitoxins = Bulldust
  •   2 alchemists' fire = Bulldust
  •   2 acid = Bulldust
  •   2 holy water = Bulldust

Money and gems:
  •   2pp, 85gp, 700sp
  •   50gp gem, 100gp gem, 100gp pearl

Their backpacks also contained a fair assortment of mundane adventuring gear as well including bedrolls, waterskins and enough trail rations for each of them for a week. (Assume any other item you want from the adventuring gear list is there, up to a 12gp price limit per item.) (Riza takes some trail rations)

Cat the bat is sent out of the room to go exploring but returns looking very agitated and alarmed at about the same time that Dregz finishes healing everyone.

Most headed out to the southwest passage to see what the trouble was but Bully backtracked to check on Arlein first.  While Bully peered into the stone sarcophagus again Arlein made a show of jumping all over the discarded stone lid then ran hissing and yowling at the pile of empty coffins at the end of the room. The shadow suddenly flew out as though terrified of the cat and dived back into the stone coffin to hide beneath the corpse again.

Meanwhile everyone else crowds around the corner of the corridor to see a huge, 15ft long centipede twisting through the opening into the room where the shriekers and violet fungi were (area 19).

Raven's arrow glances off the huge centipede's exoskeleton but the scorching ray from Moffa's wand crisps several of its legs and leaves a section of its body smouldering. Riza's arrow finds its mark as well.

The centipede looks seriously injured and responds to the sudden assault aggressively. It whips its forward section out of the opening (room 19) and charges down the narrow corridor at its attackers. Fortunately Minmorc has Vera set in anticipation of exactly this and the centipede impales itself fully 10 feet along the greatspear before it collapses on the floor, dead.

But there is no time for celebration as a loud scuttling of many bony feet on the stone floor heralds the approach of a second one of these monstrous vermin down the eastern corridor. Seconds later it scuttles across the open area of room 18 to lunge at Minmorc from that side. Fortunately, its fangs don't quite manage to penetrate Minmorc's breastplate and he is unharmed.

Oopses cowers in terror against the wall as Jurz and Rog charge past him to attack the rear end of the second huge centipede while Minmorc  drops Vera and switches back to his axewife to slash at the bitey end of that huge creepy crawly. Rog bites off a chuck of crunchy leg and abdomen and Jurz obligingly cauterises the wound with his flaming blade. As the centipede rears up to strike back at the attackers behind it Minmorc's greataxe almost slices the creature's head off.

Raven hops back across to the eastern corridor in time to shoot a crossbow bolt into the twitching rear end of the centipede and it finally collapses on the floor, just as dead as the first one.

Thoughts of the culinary delights ahead fill the minds of many members of Team Arda-Nuff.

Moffdust happily leaves the battle to her fighting friends and focusses on the strong, locked door (#10) beside her. She reads a spell from a scroll and there is a satisfying click as the lock on the door unlocks itself. The door, of course, remains closed. (This door needs to be pulled open and will open outwards into the corridor. The hinges are on the left side of the door.)

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

More rooms are opened up by the explorers as the rest of the group focusses on finding a safe way to enter the room with the four locked chests. Raven, Dregz, Riza and Bulldust all try to figure it out but in the end it is left to Bulldust to try to wedge a bedframe between the floor and the section of ceiling with holes in. He nearly manages to get it into position but as soon as he starts to straighten it up to vertical position it presses down on the floor, which turns out to be a pressure plate that releases the heavy trapdoor from the ceiling. The trapdoor swings down in an arc to slam against the open doorway sending row after row of 6-inch long metal spikes to protrude out of the holes in the wood and skewer anyone caught inside the room by the swinging trapdoor. Fortunately Bully was far enough back and protected by the bedframe, so he is just pushed back from the door as the trapdoor swings down.

However, the spiked trapdoor was then wedged in place and required some considerable muscle to push it back up into position. Luckily Bully and Minmorc are big enough and strong enough to manage that and finally the trapdoor can be propped up in position on the ceiling again with a solid beam of wood from the broken bedframe braced diagonally down from one of the holes to the corner of the room just beside the doorway. As long as no one is careless enough to dislodge that beam the trapdoor is now secured and it is safe to enter the room.

Cat the bat flutters around the room and Moffdust tells Raven to open the chest to the right of the doorway first.  Raven quickly picks the lock and lifts the lid of the chest to reveal its contents. It looks like a decent collection of gold and silver temple ornaments, all bearing a holy symbol that consists of a crescent moon in front of a new moon surrounded by about 14 stars.

Eventually all of the other rooms along these northern corridors are opened without finding any more monsters lurking inside. The previously unopened western and central rooms (#5 to #8 and #20 to #25) are all storerooms of various kinds, holding spare furniture, clothing, bedding, camping supplies, cooking, cleaning and gardening equipment, etc. The eastern rooms are
#13: Armory (various non-masterwork weapons and armour up to chainmail and banded mail in human and halfling sizes (no half-plate or full-plate armour) – leather items are dried and brittle; steel is rusty but still serviceable)

Riza will assist Raven in unlocking the chests if any locks seem to be giving trouble. Failing that she will call in Minmorc and bulldust to apply their subtle persuasion on the locks.
While the others rummage through the chests Riza will busy herself with the centipede corpses, before heading back and seeing if there is anything she could use from the items discovered.

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

Raven and Riza work together to pick the locks on the last two chests. These prove a bit more tricky but eventually they manage to unlock the third chest, which is full of silver coins. All old and tarnished black and of an unfamiliar design but still valuable enough in human lands. Again, there must be thousands of them in there.

Eventually they manage to unlock the last chest, too. But when they lift the lid of the chest a sudden rush of smoke pours out of the chest to engulf them! Raven gasps and coughs for a moment then collapses on the floor.  Riza manages to hold her breath and is not overcome by the smoke.

While the others concentrated on Moffa’s room, Jurz rode Rog around the rooms, picking over the various weapons armours and tools.
Eventually he made his way back to the book room,  and starts looking for a book with pages made of nice soft paper.  For some things, soft paper was much more pleasant than leaves.  And it came already packaged.

When the spluttering and coughing starts accompanied, as it almost certainly will be, by the Ooohs and Arrhs of the others - Jurz makes his way back to the corridor to see what is happening.

Moffdust returns from her walk down the corridor still muttering "...ya uln...ya uln..." but also carrying an earthenware urn. When she returns the room is full of smoke, Raven is stricken and there is still nowhere for her to cast her spell. So she abandon's the spell and sets down the urn. "Just opens de ones wid de golds." she offers helpfully.

Then realising that that was not really much help, she casts Detect Magic to see if any magic auras linger in the room or on the piles of armour and weapons and books that Min and Jurz are hauling out of the other rooms. She grins at Jurz' practical use for the book he found, but comments to Dregz "Sometimes a holey books just wont do."

The smoke cloud was still expanding and by the time Riza drags Raven out the smoke completely fills that room. It seeps out the doorway making the 5-foot section of corridor outside the door smoky as well, but it doesn't seem to be expanding any more.

Bulldust retreats as the smoke advances so he is not affected. Raven doesn't seem to be injured, just unconscious. She is still breathing.

Moffdust stands as close to the smoke as she can to scan for magic inside the room after everyone is out.

Meanwhile Bulldust fans the smoke from the doorway and that does seem to be having some effect as the smoke does seem to be thinning and clearing.

OOC: Bully won't need to drag the chests out as the smoke will dissipate after a few more rounds. Raven will be unconscious for at least a minute, maybe longer.

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

As the smoke clears away Bulldust holds his breath and heads back into the room, then drags the closest chest over to the doorway. He can't pull it right out of the room without dislodging the bedframe prop that is holding up the spiked trap panel above the doorway, so he is obliged to pass the items out to those waiting in the corridor outside. By the time he is finished the smoke has completely cleared and Raven has woken up again from her nap.

The items that Bully passed out are a set of gold and silver temple ornaments, all bearing a holy symbol that consists of a crescent moon in front of a new moon surrounded by about 14 stars.  There are two silver candelabras, four silver candlesticks, a silver candle snuffer, a silver incense urn with holes in the lid, a large silver tray, a gold chalice, a gold plate, a gold bowl, a gold ceremonial dagger, one larger gold and silver wall ornament and two smaller gold and silver wall ornaments. The general consensus among those in the group that have any idea of the value of such things is that this collection might be worth about 5000 gold coins in human lands.

Bully heads back in to fetch the items from the fourth chest.

There are also two other chests in there full of old silver and copper coins.

"I fink dere was some pattern on da padlocks."  Bulldust suggests to Jurz.  He fetches the one from the temple trinket chest and gives it to the red gobbo.

The bugbear has a rethink when he learns how many silver coins there are.  They're worth taking.  So once all the loot is out of the treasure room, he pulls the silver chest out the door, dropping the bars behind the chest as he goes, and drags the chest into the open space.  He thinks over what he's learned about sharing, and tries to remember how Oopses divided coins back in their temple hideout.  He starts by tearing off pieces of mildewed tapestry and placing them on the floor, one for each of the people: Oopses, Jurzie, Raven, Riza, Min, Dregzie, Moffa and Himself.  Its a lot of coins.  So he borrows a rusty helmet to use as a scoop and ladles out the coins into equal piles, finishing off by tying each bundle with a piece of tapestry cord.  "Can I borrow da pee tree later Jurzie an turn mine inta holy juice?"

OOC: thats 2500 sp each (worth 250 gp each, weighs 50 lb each).

The previous night had been spent travelling to the town of Kester with their caravan of Paynim nomad prisoners and horses. They arrived near dawn and had little rest before entering Kester as soon as the gates opened in the morning, then spent the whole day trading and shopping in the marketplace. They teleported out straight afterwards about half an hour before dusk. So the team have all been awake and busy for almost 24 hours. It is time to rest!

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

With the excitement over and fatigue setting in everyone settles down to feast, sort through their treasures and finally to have a well-earned sleep. Minmorc drags Oopses upstairs to set up a cooking fire in the half-buried ground floor level of the ruined building above. They discover the tracks of the two giant centipedes that had come down the stairs through the door that the team had left open earlier but there is no sign of anything else to disturb them while everything is cooked to perfection.

Bully persuades Jurz to bring out the O'Baddy Bonsai Tree, which is a small bonsai tree in a silver pot that drips greenish holy water from a tiny tube inserted in the tree trunk. At the back of the silver pot is a horizontal slot about 1.25 inches long and less than a quarter of an inch wide, just the right size to insert silver coins. The bonsai tree will convert 100 silver coins and one pint of water to half a pint of concentrated holy water in 100 minutes. Each half pint flask has the same effect as a normal pint flask of holy water, or 2 concentrated half pints could be stored in a normal one pint flask to deliver 2 doses of holy water at the same time. If the group rests for say 10 hours in total that would be 600 minutes and the tree can convert 600sp and 12 pints of water into 6 half pints of concentrated holy water.

OOC: I am still working out the details of Dregz's dreams, but while you are waiting the good news is that the nomad camp battle and this temple basement encounter give everyone enough experience to level up. Everyone now has 10,252XP and can advance to ECL 5.

"Bits of dem are holy," he amends his earlier remark.  "I'll have to sort through dem."

If Jurz's questions are confusing, even to the druid himself, Minmorc's are doubly so, not least of which for the very good reason that there might actually be a wrong answer.

On matters of holy texts, though, the little goblin priest's faith is very clear.

"More holy," Dregz tells the big orc confidently.

Bully gladly takes the bag of holding that was too heavy for Dregz.  He puts in everyone's bundles of silvered all the other treasure that has not yet been shared out.  He will explain the workings of the centipede auto-feed for the pee tree so that those on watch can keep his coins rolling in all through the sleep (never pausing to consider that they could possibly have nothing better to do) so he will have 3 flasks of double strength holy water after 10 hours.  He sleeps next to Moffa and wakes up bigger and stronger, older and wiser looking more like his portrait every day.

The night passes quietly and everyone is able to enjoy a much-needed full night's sleep with a full belly. Those on guard duty through the night have nothing to report. When everyone wakes up it is still about two hours before dawn and even after everyone has eaten and priests have prayed to their unholy gods it will still be an hour before dawn.

OOC: All spellcasters will have their full quota of spells available, including any new spells learnt after levelling up. The full night's rest cures one hit point per level for anyone who is wounded, and anyone with ability damage (Strength, Dex, Con, etc.) regains one point in each affected ability score.

She reached down and softly shook Moffdust to try to wake her up, so she would have time to get ready too. She stuffed a few mouth-fulls of cold leftover cenner peed in her mouth and laid some by Moffdust in case she is hungry too.

Night 12: The Sea of Dust

After a good night's sleep all of Team Arda-Nuff are refreshed, almost fully healed, fed and ready to go. Dregz gathers everyone in a circle around him, holds up the black rod and says the magic word, "Wyrd!"

Nothing happens. The rod doesn't teleport to or from underground locations or inside buildings, so everyone has to carry their heavy loads of loot upstairs and out into the gray dust before Dregz can try again.

Outside it is still night (about one hour before dawn) but there is enough moonlight for those with lowlight vision (Raven and Riza) so Raven puts her glowing rapier away and Rza shutters her lowlight lantern.

This time the magic word works. There is the sound of a faint gust of wind behind them as Team Arda-Nuff disappears from the Sea of Dust.

Continued in new thread.
