End of Night 12: Into the fort

The orc cleric knocks sharply on the small door in the wall of the fort between the two buildings. A few moments later an orc inside opens a peephole in the door then quickly opens the door and ushers the orc cleric and his guests inside.

[Language unknown: "Diain ateson'romugh at ndet, oulratwas iv,"] the orc cleric orders loudly.

There are three pairs of orcs on guard at the top of the three round towers on the southern side of the fort and another orc patrolling along the top of the wall. One orc from each pair hurries down into each tower and raised voices can be heard from inside as the word is passed to those inside.

One of the orc guards on the southern tower calls down to the orc cleric.

[Language unknown: "Pre rowalo ei intom eveomeher, in. Venerewit si ver u evol iveonethi iossac."]

[Language unknown: "Icilli, atnd teil m,"] the orc cleric responds abruptly.

It doesn't take long before there are twenty orcs gathered in the courtyard, in addition to the original seven on the towers and wall. Then a shifty-eyed dwarf is allowed in through a passageway in the southernmost tower. He jumps slightly as a low growl echoes from the western side of the courtyard, where a white wolf is held on a short chain from the winch above the well in that corner of the courtyard. After a moment's hesitation he quickly recovers and continues toward the orc cleric. He nods a quick and barely respectful bow to the orc cleric before quickly getting down to business.

"There's a gods-damned knight on his way here with two score of men planning to take this fort. What's it worth to you to know what their plans are?" he asks bluntly.

Riza follows the group in but once they are inside she sticks to the shadows near the group, keeping up with them but keeping out of site. She keeps her now ready but pointed down, she instantly dislikes the dwarf and will put an arrow through him if he threatens any of the party members.

End of Night 12: Into the fort

Bulldust snorts in disbelief.  "Dey couldn't take dis fort, even wiv a whole bunch of knights, not wiv so many orcs already inside it!  Which one's Kurjan?"  He listens to learn more about what's going on, in particular any mention of elves or how to get up to the cliff top.  He looks around the fort and glances up at the cliff to see what he can see from this angle.  He stays alert and ready to defend himself if they are attacked.

23:43, Today: Bulldust rolled 17 using 1d20+4.  spot check.

End of Night 12: Into the fort

OOC: Good guess.

os1-os3 are orc sergeants. All three are wearing splint mail armour.
The 6 guards (o1-o6) on duty on the towers are wearing scale mail armour.
All the rest (o7-o24) look like they were off duty and are only wearing the leather leggings (with metal scales) of their scale mail.
All of the orcs are armed with two-handed weapons (mostly falchions although there are a few with greataxes or orc double axes).
None of the orcs carry shields or missile weapons but there are barrels of javelins at strategic places around the courtyard and on the towers.

The walls are about 15 feet high and the 3 towers and 2 buildings 20ft high. There is the small door in the northern wall that you entered through (5ft high x 3ft wide) and a much larger 8ft x 8ft gate and passage through the centre of the southeast tower. Access up to the walls is available via ladders at each end of each wall.
There is a partially repaired breach 10ft wide in the middle of the east wall (where os1 is standing). The wall at that point was broken down to only 5ft high and has been barricaded back up to a height of 10ft. There is still a pile of rubble making a 5ft high ramp up to the breach (difficult terrain, counts as double the normal movement).

The rectangular shape sticking out into the courtyard north of the central tower is actually a wooden platform 12ft above the ground supported by heavy wooden posts at the northeast and northwest corners.

The white wolf is chained to the winch over the well in the western part of the courtyard.

Minmorc has been carefully watching the Dwarf and the Orcs but most closely the Wee Cleric. He's been looking around to see if another Orc shows up and something seems to dawn on him. Walking over to loom over the Dwarf and pointing at the Wee cleric he'll say "Dwarf... Dis is Kurgan Sawtooth, right?"

The dwarf looks up at Minmorc and sneers.

"Yeah, I know he's Sawtooth. That's why I'm talking business with him, not you. He's the boss, not you. So back off until he tells you what he wants you to do. Got it?"

He turns back to the Orc Cleric and jerks his thumb at Minmorc.

"New recruit?" he asks.

End of Night 12: Into the fort

"Back off, orc boy!" Kurjan Sawtooth the Orc Cleric orders Minmorc. He pushes in between Minmorc and the dwarf. "Makkal has proven himself useful enough in the past but you haven't proven yourself at all, yet!"

He then turns to the dwarf and ignores Minmorc.

"Alright, Makkal, I'll double your usual fee if the information is worth it. So, who is this knight, what is his plan and why do these guys keep talking about elves?"

The dwarf nods agreement to that deal and quickly explains what he knows.

"The knight is a human called Sir Jolimont Thrumble. He's a right pompous ass, rich enough to have plenty of influence at court, but he's a strong fighter and an experienced commander too. He's got about 40 human troops. Half of them are ex-soldiers and the rest are young lads looking for a chance to get rich in his service, 'cause he pays good money. He also managed to get a band of elvish archers to join him just for this mission, because they really hate all you orcs. They're going to be his artillery support but they split off from the main group several hours ago and I don't know what their plans are. The rest of them are sneaking up to the plateau here in the dark and will launch their attack just after dawn, when the sun is bright enough to dazzle you orcs so you can't shoot at them as they close in to attack the fort. He wants this fort so he can claim the lands around here as his own."

He gestures toward the south as he speaks of them sneaking up to the plateau and gestures toward the east when he talks of the attack planned just after dawn.

"What are you clowns talking about now?" the Orc Cleric shouts in frustration. "Why would I pay you to kill elves? My boyz love to kill elves for the sheer joy of it! You can go climb that damn cliff for all I care, since you seem so interested in it. That's the only way to get up there. Go climb the cliff then do us all a favour and jump off it!"

He flings out his arm theatrically to point at the cliff that is barely discernible in the darkness behind the fort.

"Or shut up and stand quietly back there to show me you can follow a simple order, if you want to have any hope of joining my army!"

This time he points back at the north wall of the fort near the small gate they came in by.

Moments later there is a faint whistling sound in the air above the courtyard then a shower of arrows falls on the unarmoured orc soldiers lined up in the courtyard. Seven of the orcs are hit by arrows. One orc (o8) collapses on the ground with 2 arrows in him, another (o14) is grievously wounded, four orcs are seriously wounded and one is only lightly wounded.

"Dats all I needed ta hear Kurgan.  Have a nice war.  An don't forget ta line everyone up an march em up an down till dere bums fall off."  Bulldust stalks off through the small gate and back towards the cliff.

[GM posted while I was posting for Bully} The bugbear does not seem surprised at the shower of arrows.  If there is a large shield lying around somewhere he will swipe it in the confusion and hold it above his bead as he crosses to the cliff.  He looks back from the small door to see if any of the others are leaving too; he will cover them with the shield too if they do.
