3.5 has it's benefits but for me, the drawbacks are far to great. Heading that list is the rampant commercialism attached to it. So many supplements, etc and you just have to have them all! :D
2nd ed was a bit like that. The social pressure to get "the complete <class> handbook" was awesome. Race books, setting books (dear Lord, does anyone
ever use the Viking Handbook?)... need I even mention the quest for a complete collection of magic items?
Forgotten Realms was pretty much the transition, and the FR supplements are many.

No I'm quite happy with my 1st edition thanks. Back in my day you were lucky to have more than two books! And that's all you really needed too. Try telling that to the players of today though and they won't believe you! ;)
I didn't have the DMG, back in the day. Had to sponge off others. I did have LL, though. Good times.
Somehow, eventually, I got my mitts on the Dungeoneer's Survival Guide and OA. I felt like a frickin'
god with my repeating crossbow.
