The knowledge

As usual, the day began the same as any other since Iviana had left the shrine seeking knowledge and wisdom for her goddess.  Celine was a strange place even with her elven heritage. Perhaps that was it, the high elves were strangers to her and their attitude to her disdainful and occasionally hostile.

Traveling between the bowers she made her way, as usual, to the halls of knowledge. Those ancient chambers, housing ancient tomes and.... ancient elves. Still it was her chosen path she followed, or more correctly it was the path that had chosen her.

Strangely today she felt drawn to the more recent histories. So recent that in some the ramifications of the events chronicled were still rippling through Oerth.  Take this one for example, "The Battle of Emridy Meadows and the Overthrow of the Temple."  Usually she would not think of reading it but today she was fascinated.  Why would a demon set-up home so close to civilization? It must have know the forces of good would not tolerate it there.  Why even was a demon interested in elemental forces, things that it had little control over? Anyway it was well written, and by a human!  That the elves would bother with such a work spoke clearly about it value.  She read on until the light began to fade.  Some books so old, the curators did not allow artificial light, only the subtle tones of sunlight through leaves. Even her white robes looked green in this light, gradually turning to a rosy red as she return to her chambers. Her notes clasped to her breast, she would finish the book tomorrow.

As usual she prayed to Lydia, given forth the knowledge she had received in return for the warm of her faith.  Priest of Lydia had been known to actually speak to the goddess in the ritual but as yet she found only solace.

Retiring for the night she fell into a deep slumber, not surprisingly she dreamed of battle, evil and good minions destroying each other in the eternal struggle.  Over everything, a place so evil it hurt her to look upon it. Yet strangely attractive, in spite of herself, her disembodied spirit soared over the battle towards the temple. A great feeling of elation and fulfillment overcame her fears as the great doors opened and.....

With a gasp she awoke bathed in sweat.  The temple, she was sure of that! But, how could she dream it so clearly when she had never seen it or even a drawing of it? Restlessly she waited dawn’s light.

The nightmare still fresh in her mind she sought the book from its place in the social studies section.

It was not there....
