On to the temple...

Otis brought with him a map of the area showing Hommlet, Nulb and the temple in  their approximate locations.  He marked it up with the druid's bowl and traced out a route to the south of Nulb that they could follow to the temple.  This was almost entirely within the Gnarley which would shield them for prying eyes but had the obvious dangers of traveling through it. The distance was approximately 12 miles and would take the better part of a day if they were being cautious.

Re: On to the temple...

Iviana fairly quivers as she looks at Otis's map, a sparkle in her eyes that matches almost exactly those of the ferret peering over her shoulder.  She shakes her head sadly, though, and says softly, "Poor Nulb.  It really can't help but fall under the shadow.  Thank you, Otis."  The solemnity in her tone isn't entirely matched by the eager tension in her muscles.  "We should probably keep the map here; we don't want to risk it leading anything back here, should it be dropped, or...should its holder fall," she suggests.

With a longing glance out the cave entrance, she adds, "I'd suggest leaving in the morning...perhaps a little before first light.  We don't want to get there after dark."

Yew looked at the map, too. He muttered to himself as he also endeavoured to commit the route and its limited landmarks to memory.

"The trail heads south and curves around to the east, bending left all the way there. About a third of the way to the temple it crosses the road I travelled to Nulb."

It seemed straight forward enough.

Re: On to the temple...

The next morning started fine but chilly, they quickly packed and having given the map to the Dryad moved off in the direction indicated.  Most of the route was not a trail taking more the form of animal runs though the undergrowth. The going was dry and firm to begin with, but there were places where streams had backed up producing boggier ground.

With Ronalt taking the lead, they had little problem finding their way.  Several times he guided them past forest creatures and in the marshier areas steered them around likely places for giant toads or reptiles.

Mid afternoon and the clouds rolled in... Rain began to fall, light at first then settling into a steady downpour.  Those with bows did their best to protect the strings but all were pretty well soaked through by the time they got close to their goal.  Almost perceptively at first, the woodland began to thin out.  This was not the edge of a forest they would expect but more some sort of blight on the land driving the living wood into decay.  Perhaps it was the malign presence of the temple or perhaps some natural cause, the overall effect was depressing.

OOC: there are four hours of daylight remaining and by Ronalt's estimate you are about a mile from the temple.

Gwythe initially looks around with interest at the land that they are travelling through, but as the rain starts to fall pulls his hood over his face and walks along downtrodden, uninterested and simply seeking to reach their destination.

As they get closer he stops, interested in the thinned out trees. He breaks off a branch and inspects it closely, before throwing it to the side of the path and following along behind the others.

Re: On to the temple...

As they marched through the forest Yew was surprised that such a strong group moved so slowly. They were heavily armed, of course, which explained it. He silently practiced the mental techniques of calmness and patience he had learnt during his years at the monastery.

When they came closer to the temple he understood their caution was justified.

"Patience is often rewarded," he observed philosophically, "but an evil temple is likely to have both human and humanoid guards - humans on guard during the day then humanoids who can see at night. Night is probably their strongest time and our weakest. If there are guard patrols we may learn the best way to enter by watching them but if the temple itself is enough of a fortress they may not even patrol outside at all. Perhaps we should get close enough to watch for an hour. Then, if there are no patrols we can still try to find a way inside before nightfall."

Re: On to the temple...

Ladies and gentlemen I give you the words of Gary Gygax himself.

As you approach the Temple area, the vegetation is disconcerting—dead trees with a skeletal appearance, scrub growth twisted and unnaturally colored, all unhealthy and sickly looking or exceptionally robust and disgusting. The ruins of the Temple's outer works appear as dark and overgrown mounds of gray rubble and blackish weeds. Skulls and bones of humans and humanoids gleam white here and there amidst the weeds.

A grove of some oddly stunted and unhealthy looking usk trees still grows along the northern end of the former Temple compound, and a stump of a tower juts up from the northeast corner of the shattered wall. The leprous gray Temple, however, stands intact, its arched buttresses somehow obscene with their growth of climbing vegetation.

Everything surrounding the place is disgusting. The myriad leering faces and twisting, contorted forms writhing and posturing on every face of the Temple seem to jape at the obscenities they depict. The growth in the compound is rank and noisome. Thorns clutch, burrs stick, and crushed stems either emit foul stench or raise angry weals on exposed flesh.

Worst of all, however, is the pervading fear which seems to hang over the whole area — a smothering, clinging, almost tangible cloud of vileness and horror. Sounds seem distorted, either muffled and shrill or unnaturally loud and grating. Your eyes play tricks.

You see darting movements out of the corner of your eye, just at the edge of vision; but when you shift your gaze towards such, of course, there is nothing there at all. You cannot help but wonder who or what made the maze of narrow paths through the weedy courtyard. What sort of thing would wander here and there around the ghastly edifice of Evil without shrieking and gibbering and going completely mad?

Yet the usual mundane sounds of your travel are accompanied only by the chorus of the winds, moaning through hundreds of Temple apertures built to sing like doomed souls given over to the tender mercies of demonkind, echoed by macabre croaks from the scattered flapping, hopping, leering ravens.

There is no doubt; you have come to a place of ineffable Evil. Still, it is most certainly a place for high adventure and untold treasures. It is time to ready spells, draw weapons, check equipment, and set forth into the maze of peril that awaits you inside the....

OOC: Since we are approaching from the south I presume we will enter by the southern gate. Then approach directly to the temple?

What is our marching order? Yew is unarmoured and would be better off in the second rank or as rear guard. He can move quickly to get forward if required.

Re: On to the temple...

With Ronalt and Kalador in the lead, the party followed Tindo's advice and circled around the outside of the temple walls. The place oppressed them, it felt like they were being watched all the time... and perhaps they were.  At several times they thought they heard the sound of movement, strangely enough outside the walls but never saw any source other than the wind.  The tower to the North East while partially collapsed looked sturdy enough at its base, but short of entering the perimeter they could tell no more. No structure, other than the temple itself, retained any understandable form.

As they moved around they heard what sounded like the howl of wolves. The cries initially from inside the perimeter was echoed by others further afield. As it was taken up it almost seemed like they were surrounded by the howls, though again nothing could be seen.

OOC; I followed Tindo's instructions as no one complained.

The wolf howls continue to echo around the temple and surroundings.  For the moment they do not seem to be getting any louder allowing some respite to consider actions and plan their approach. At Iviana's urging the tower looked like a good place to start.

Studying it, it was clear that there was little or no chance of getting inside without gaining access to the temple ground, short of scaling the walls and hoping for access from above. To access from the temple grounds, they would either have to return to the entrance or scrambled over the ruined walls entangled with vines.

OOC: On the temple map you were about '11 o'clock' when the wolves started up.

Re: On to the temple...

Everyone has little difficulty scrambling to the top of rubble that was the wall.  Even Arek after some assistance. As they gazed about across the court yard they saw that temple of course dominated the scene.  Between them and it were some low trees or shrubs.  The remnants of raised building are there to be seen but only one, to the south west of their position, has enough left to even begin guess its purpose.

As with all of the razed works of the Temple, the outlines of this place are discernible even though the whole is tumbled, burned and broken. Broken bricks, bits of charred beams, and broken plaster are heaped in the shell of the lower storey. Parts of a narrow outside stairway on the north side can be seen through the rubble.

At least some few the sounds of wolves come from the direction of the building.  Even as they look, the howls begin to die down barely perceptible at first but finally, with one last mournful cry, there was only the sound of the wind and some crows crawing on the tower's crumbling upper-works.

OOC: Current location on the wall, just west of the tower 'A'.
The building is marked 'B' on the map.

Approaching the ruins they could see signs of wolves or hounds but no sound of them.  The crows in the tower settled down as the depart towards the ruins.  The building's collapse looks much more extensive the closer they get.  Approaching from the north east the only entrance visible is the stairs up now it looks as though this is a dead end.

Re: On to the temple...

The party skirted the wall reaching the corner and peering around.  Ahead they could see another opening in the wall though without going further they could not tell if this was blocked. The silence was broken only by the wind and the ravens in the tower behind.  Looking back they could see that three of them had taken to the wing and were heading in their general direction.

Brother Yew followed the wall along to the expected doorway followed closely by Kalador.  They were not the most silent pair but even so there was no sign of activity either monsters or wolves.  Behind them the others waited some watching the ravens of which another two had taken wing. All five circled for height, catching some unseen thermal.  Gradually they drifted closer.

Re: On to the temple...

Areks sling shot is true and hits one of the ravens which by now had assumed gigantic proportions. It caused it to briefly slow.

Kalador kicked in the door revealing some stairs going down but nothing else.  Almost as if this was a cue, a whistle sounded towards the temple. It was hard to say whether of the howling of wolves or the screeching of the ravens, both immediately following, was the louder. Wolves began to appear from the thicket. At the same time the first three ravens began a dive on the party.  Well behind, the remaining ravens took off from the tower, seven more in all.

OOC: So I need actions with a d10 individual initiative, dex modifiers apply.  Let me know if I have your position wrong....

Just to be clear the wolves are not attacking yet, but are behaving aggressively.  The first three ravens are attacking, the two behind them will be in position to attack in the following round and the remaining seven on round four.  The wolves look much larger than usual and the ravens are about a ten foot wingspan.

Most of the party headed down the stairs until only Ronalt and Brother Yew were left outside.  Somewhat surprisingly the wolves and ravens do not press the attack.  The giant birds wheeled away at the last minute while the wolves seemed content to close up and stand watching the party.

At the base of the stairs there was a 20'x20' room with three doors off, one on each wall and all closed.

It is just a circular room with no other way out. It doesn't feel right, though. It is cold in there and there is no dust on the floor, just 4 unlit torches in 4 sconces around the walls."

"Try the other door,"
he suggests to those behind him. "There is no way forward here."

However he remains where he is and peers around at the walls and ceiling, looking for any sign of gaps in the wall or anything lurking above the door.

"What would keep it so clean and cold?" he wonders aloud. "Strong winds? Water? Magic or monster?"

Finally he jabs forward with the base of his halberd, striking the floor inside the room solidly although he remains ready to leap back over the pit at the first sign of trouble.

Yew waits no longer but simply leaps across the pit and rolls past Kalador's legs back into the main room. He springs back to his feet and bows respectfully to Tindo. (If it is supposed to be 10 feet wide he may need a run up. In that case he would move into and across the circular room, tapping the floor ahead of him with his halberd to detect any more pits, then run back and leap across the pit.)

"I distrust the cold in that chamber. I do not wish to be trapped in there," he explained. "Let us explore the other corridors first."

OOC: the corridors are five foot wide.

Gwythe's instinct proved right if a bit premature.

The grating sound stopped to be replaced by the noise of a rolling ball. It seemed to take an age, but probably no more than five seconds before with a loud 'thump' it banged into something. There was a slight pause then the sound of something ratcheting, getting slower as it seamed to work harder.  Then there was a loud 'click' followed by a 'sproing'.  Some plaster crumbled and fell off roof at the foot of the stairs, followed by a crash as a portcullis dropped to block the exit.

And then jumps back with a shriek, dropping something that wasn't in her hand a moment before.  With a splortch, a heart hits the floor, spattering fresh blood as it lands.  Her flail falls from her other hand, skittering a few feet across the floor.

"Iviana, stop!"

He started to run back from the tapestry where Gwythe is trapped but it would take a miracle to reach her in time.

Re: On to the temple...

For once Yew seems stymied.  Not so Kalador who launches himself at Iviana and succeeds getting a grip on her arm as Arek smashes into her other elbow. Iviana is intent on reaching the statue and tries desperately to throw the heart into its out stretched hands. Peer pressure pays off, as it flops at her feet giving a feeble beat.

Ronalt and Tindo pick-up momentum and smash into the statue which reels from the blow.  Teetering on its pedestal it rocks backwards and forwards... and forwards... and forwards... until it rolls off, its outstretched hands seemingly grasping for the heart.

OOC: the dice roller really loved you guys..... well for while.

Kalador has Iviana in an arm lock.

Re: On to the temple...

Time again seemed to be in slow motion, Brother Yew tried to kick the heart away before Iviana could cause more damage.  It looked a good plan until... the Idol moved! It hands stretched out and partially blocking Yew's kick as it made what seemed an incredible move to clutch the heart out of the air.

Immediately the temple rang to the sound of laughter that echoed and rolled around. The heart pumped more blood than was possible.  The idol drenched in blood took on a rosy hew and the laughter increased in volume! Subtly beneath this the sound of water? No blood! Gallons of it started pouring from each tapestry.  In one pool, a naked human, covered in blood could be seen writhing either in pain or ecstasy. It took a few seconds to realise that this was Gwythe and slightly longer to realise he was trying to get back into the tapestry, the torrent of blood seemingly the only thing stopping him...

OOC: Gwythe is sort of hidden by the blood torrent in the map... You have a few but not many rounds before the blood will begin to fill the temple. The door is still open to the rest of the rooms....

btw: the dice roller really hates you now, Johna Lomu could not have done it better... or maybe Iviana's right and this is a good thing....

Re: On to the temple...

Kalador and Yew dragged Iviana to the corridor without any difficulty.  The half-elf looked disappointed but otherwise was compliant.  The door was slammed and the pew laid against it.  It was quite an effective barrier though some blood had run out into the corridor already.  It was clear however that if the temple continued to fill the door would not hold for long.

To the north as Ronalt had said, the circular room now was illuminated by torches in the sconces. Those that chose to look could also confirm his and Areks pronouncement. A pentagram had been painted on the floor in fresh blood.  There was no sign of drips or splashes from the corridor so whoever had painted it used a different source, or was very careful.

The stairs were still blocked by the portculis that had fallen in place earlier.

Arek pushed the door open.  Beyond was a room which initially dark brightened considerably as torches lit.  It was obviously a bedroom, not just that but a priest's bedroom and quite ornate.

Immediately opposite the door was a small shrine with an even smaller copy of the  potbellied idol.  Two candles were lit flanking the idol and a wicked looking rusted knife lay before it.  to their right was a writing desk of some description with the bed on their left and a dresser in the far corner.

Do not place yourself where they would expect you to be. Be careful what you touch. Use a blade or something else to move things instead. Think, also, where would you want to have a secret door for a quick escape if this was your home? It should be safe to look under the bed if you are uncertain where to begin."

The does not seem to be any traps.  The dresser drawers opened by Yew contained clothes and little else.

Blood or rust on the knife? It was hard to tell but if it was blood it had long since dried.

There were a few items on the desk.  Quills, writing paper the usual paraphernalia.  There was a central drawer and two on each side of the desk which may contain more.

Can you help me search these walls?" he indicates the south and east walls of the room, which seem likely to be the outer walls of this underground complex. He turns to search the eastern wall.

The door opened onto a small room.  What ever had been its original purpose was unclear, its current or recent use all to obvious. Bodies! Almost all skeletal; some with sinew attached; a few with flesh remnants long turned to leather; some even partially clothed were heaped in the room.  With some, it was obvious their ribs had been smashed..... perhaps in an effort to remove their heart.  There was little smell, the decay long since complete.  On a shelf in the background was a statuette of the pot bellied god. It seemed content to survey the carnage of yore.... almost as if sated after a good meal...

"Is there anything in the scrollcase?" Iviana asks Kalador.

Kalador replied, "No or at least nothing I can make out."

Brother Yew looked at the base of the statue. As he lifted it off the shelf.... nothing happened. Kalador looked at the scroll case, pronouncing on its contents though it was hard to determine if he was correct without opening it.

Arek continued to study.

Re: On to the temple...

Yew read out the series of letters on the label on the base of the small statue.

He shrugged his shoulders to indicate they meant nothing to him.

He put the statuette back and turned his attention to the ceiling of this small storeroom, using his halberd to determine what the ceiling was made of and whether it might be possible to break through and escape that way. The length of the halberd allowed him to reach the ceiling without standing directly beneath the area he was poking at.

For some reason Yew imagined Kalador was inspecting one of the statues, so his words caused the monk to look around in alarm. He relaxed considerably when he saw the halforc just holding a scrollcase.

"You might as well," he agreed, "it might contain a map or something else useful."

The bed is soon retrieved but doesn't prove to be completely suitable. The frame is solid hardwood, however the rotten straw matress rests on rope netting nearly as rotten.

Re: On to the temple...

The bed comes apart quite quickly, obviously intended to be dismantled from time to time to aid in moving it from place to place. The side members at a good two and a half inches wide and one thick look to be strong enough to hold several people at once, if only they were long enough.
A length or rope is pulled from a pack (there's several to choose from) and knots tied to hold the creation together. Although rickety, and the knots loosening with even passing moment, the entire party (unless I hear otherwise) manages with some trepidation to cross the spike filled chasm.
In the round chamber, the pentagram appeared to have come to life. Up close the blood red pentagrams seemed to writhe and twist with a life of their own, faintly glowing since the blood in the chapel had begun to flow.

"Now, Iviana is tha key 'ere. She made tha sacrifice, she kin open tha portal."
"This be a one way trip. Make sure ya go' everyt'ing ya want cuz tha's no commin' back."

Standing in an ancient evil temple, looking at a blood red pentagram didn't really instil confidence that what Arek was proposing was the right way to go. Arek himself wasn't too sure, let alone comfortable with it, and would happily listen to alternatives.
"Iviana 'as to stan' in the middle wi' everyone close 'roun' 'er. She then t'inks o' a place she wan's ta be."
"T'ere be no guarantee this'll work though. Meant ta be used by evil. Could ta' us somewhere....else..."

His ominous warning hung in the air as a shiver ran down even the stoic old Dwarf's back. "Elsewhere" might just mean to, and perhaps even past, the very gates of hell itself.

Iviana, not being stupid, doesn't actually require being kept out of the pentagram, and waits along the wall until everybody else has taken their suggested places.  Then she waits a little bit longer, in case anybody wants to say something like, `I think we should go to...!'

When the former has happened and the latter appears not to be, she takes a deep breath, and then steps into the center, curling her fingers around her holy symbol and closing her eyes.
