Who are you?

An unarmoured halfling cautiously remains on guard, positioning himself between the prince, and those at the door. The halfling addresses the group at the door.
"Just a routine prisoner escape. We don't have a problem, do we?"

Re: Who are you?

The robed half-elf continued moving forward, passing behind those crowding the door until he had seen all of the combatants in the room beyond. He stopped there and bowed his head gently to the prince.

"If that is the fire priest Alrrem offering his surrender, then I am sure we have no problem at all," he calmly answered the halfling.

After that he divided his attention between what was happening in the room and keeping watch down the northern corridor, keeping his light crossbow pointed down that northern corridor in case trouble should arrive from that direction.

Ivianna stayed where she was, placing her shield on the ground, stringing her bow, and nocking an arrow to it. She had a good view of the hallway, and wasn't clustered with the others if anything bad happened. She listened to the conversation and tried to make sense of it, although that was proving difficult.

Luthien goes through the aforementioned pile of stolen stuff, looking for a longsword, a shield, and some kind of armor. If no kind of armor can be found, he can take the chain mail and shield of the surrendered cleric. Better then nothing, after all.

If no longswords can be found, he at least wants a proper knightly weapon, like any other one handed sword, or a horseman's mace or pick.

Re: Who are you?

An oversized table and two matching chairs stand in the northeast, along the diagonal wall. A cask containing beer and several leather jacks are on the table, amongst small hunks of cheese and dried meat; some food scraps have fallen to the floor.
Nearby is a barrel of water and a huge pot with some sort of gruel of grain and vegetables. Brackets and torches line the walls, but only 3 contain torches, none lit. A great pile of hides and skins is in the southeast corner — a bed of sorts. Next to it is piled possessions of the Prince and a halfling.
Four bronze-bound oaken doors, each with a heavy bar, padlock, and small barred port, mark the eight foot square cells.

The gaoler, an ogre, is laying dead in the northern section. He carries 39 gp and 28 ep in his purse, along with the keys to the cells. The body of his assistant, a bugbear, is beside him and wears a chain mail shirt, a purse tucked underneath contains 3 pp, 4 gp, and 18 sp.

One of the men wears a red robe with a gold skull emblem, but with plate mail armour underneath, and carries a shield as well. He has gold fire amulet on a gold chain. A warhammer is still hooked to his belt despite him having entered into combat.

Both of the remaining bugbears wear a short cape of crimson cloth. The one which was prone carried 8 gp, 7 ep, and 6 sp while the one which Sven, Gwythe, Halfdan and Ronalt cut to pieces was both unarmed and penniless.

After disarming and searching, Alrrem is found to have been wearing a robe of deep crimson with a purple lining and gold trim; it has gold skulls on front, back, and sleeves. His gold fire symbol (on golden chain) is set with a nice ruby. He had a scroll of three spells in a tube at his belt (dispel magic, flame strike, tongues), and carried 11 ep, 21 gp, 45 pp, and 4 zircons in his purse. He wore chain mail and shield, and carried two hammers.

Other items found include a footmans flail, morning star, the 8 foot long spear Luthien was fighting with, and the ogres club.

Yew exchanged glances with Tindo and Iviana.

"That voice is elvish," he comments for the benefit of others who might not recognise the language spoken.

With one last glance down the corridor he moves quickly to the ogre jailer and  retrieves the keys.

Noticing the dead half-orc he pauses to look at the corpse.

"Was this one alive or undead?" he asks of those who fought him. "He was surely dead last time we saw him."

He leaves that question for others to answer and swiftly moves on to check the four cells beyond. He peers in at the small barred port in each door to see which cells are occupied and what the prisoners look like.

How'm I gonna pay my bills?! Do you know how much I owe Black Bart? He'll have my gizzard on a stick if I can't pay him by Godsday!”

With another blistering curse, the tiny halfling kicks at the nearby pile in frustration, then yelps and grasps his side. Looking to the cleric, he says, “Ey, Yer Worshipfulness sir, I'm Haldan. I'd be grateful if y'd look at my side. I think that bugbear might've busted a few ribs... there was this crunch when he hit me.”

Luthien notices the Plate mail...and since that is even better then chain, he'll cheerfully take that and one of the shields. He feels much more comfortable now that his defense, at least, looks properly 'knightly'

Looking around, however, he sees no longswords among the temple's stuff, but...

"Pardon me, my friends, but are any of those longswords you carry extras? I need one to be effective. I don't require a magical one."

If nothing can found or parted with, however, he'll make do with either the warhammer or the Morningstar.

(OOC:GM says the rescuers have a couple longswords lying around...)

Apparently satisfied, Sven packs the hammers for later and turns to smile at the newcomers. It had to be a smile, anyway. Sunken eyes scanned the prisoners and a coffin like voice reached their ears.
"Sven."
A skeletal hand points in turn at the others of his group not yet introduced. First the Ranger "Ronalt."
Then the tall redheaded lady "Ivianna", followed by the pale zookeeper in the back corner; "Tindoome... and, eh, pets."

Turning back to the priest he began tying the man's hands behind his back and hobbling his feet. A minute later and the party had a fine addition to their already varied array of pets. He even had a leash - apparently Sven felt it appropriate.
Walking their prize over to Arek, he asked the dwarf "What you want to do whi him Alrek? ... Sven calls him Scrappy"
The tall figure leaned over the leader of the fire temple and stopped with his scarred excuse of a face an inch from Alrrem's "And Scrappy'll show uz out off here, won't he?" he whispered alarmingly loudly. "Or he'll get his fingers broke." he added hungrily.
"Of course first we need to stop and get zis man a real Shiv!" he aimed the last over his shoulder at the young human. Sven was very pro-weapons.

"The priest is Alrrem, Precept of Fire. This is the Fire Temple and they appear to be rivals with temples of the other elements here. While he held the Prince hostage he wanted us to do two things before he would show us the way out of here. First we must 'persuade' someone called Romag of the Earth Temple to ally with him. Secondly we were to 'convince' Belsornig, priest of the Water Temple to step aside. Luthien nodded in agreement.

"We've dallied here longer then was strictly necessary. We need to get these elves out of here and go already."

To that end, he let one of the elves lean on him if any of them appeared to be injured, particularly the lady elf. Even Knights In Training were courteous like that. But he still wanted to LEAVE now.

Rolf still lay on the ground holding a nasty wound where the bugbear had dug in it's claws then taking a large bite out of his shoulder.
"An yer, it's good to see you again too!"
Grimacing with pain, he cast his gaze around.
"Where's that wild woman Yesil?"

"I will go with Master Sven to fetch the weapons. Mistress Tindoorme and Mistress Iviana may be able to reassure those elvish prisoners better than I."

He bows to Rolf, who he hadn't recognised as an ally until now.

"I understand that Mistress Yesil decided to leave several days ago, just before I met this group," he replies. "Do you have weapons here sir, or is there something among the items I listed that we can bring for you to use?"

He turns to the rest and asks, "Is there is anything in particular that anyone else wants, apart from the falchion and hand crossbow we do not have? We will fetch the longsword and daggers at least, and whatever else we think worthwhile."

Ronalt de Gault:
Ronalt smiled at Alrrem, "It is good to see you again Alrrem. We have much to talk about."
"Shall we retire to your rooms then?"
"The treaty with the troll wasn't working out as he abused some of my companions while fetching some items for him."
"So delicious bargain will you off us this time?"

Alrrem spat at Ronalt but said nothing.
Sven Arnoff:
Turning back to the priest he began tying the man's hands behind his back and hobbling his feet. A minute later and the party had a fine addition to their already varied array of pets. He even had a leash - apparently Sven felt it appropriate.
Walking their prize over to Arek, he asked the dwarf "What you want to do whi him Alrek? ... Sven calls him Scrappy."

The fire priest just sneered derisively.
Ronalt de Gault:
"nothing more for now, Sven. He is a prisoner."
"He will aid us in returning my sword and pack. Give us a better understanding of this underground lair and its exits."
"Should he get out of hand, then you may play with him then."

Luthien:
Luthien actually nods enthusiastically.
"Yes, let us hence, lest he try to betray us. Oh, and one other thing we should do..."
He rips off the priest's unholy fire symbol, and casually tosses it in the prison cell they'd been stuck in.
"Now, even if he manages to get free, he won't be casting any spells until he runs all the way back up here to retrieve his unholy symbol. I considered destroying it outright, but I'm not really sure how yet."

Alrrem didn't seem all that concerned about the loss of his symbol. Or perhaps he just recognised the futility of resisting?
Ronalt de Gault:
"You have some items to return to us. My sword and pack. Some baubles the other had. Where are they?"
"You can then show us a map of this complex."
"Once we have a way to walk out of this place you will be released. Stray from the conditions and Sven will have his way with you."

"Long gone, just like your chance of survival."
Haldan Tanner:
Haldan shakes his head in disgust. He looks at the captive fire priest as well.

"Can't handle your own problems. Pathetic."
"Knowing that, could've hired someone to help. Didn't."
"Expected that holding a hostage would get folks to do an adequate job. Ridiculous."
"Kidnapped my friend Amathaon and I -- for what? That can only have gone worse."
"Do you ever just pay for services, you worm?"

As with most of what had been said, Alrrem simply ignored the halflings jibes.
Ronalt de Gault:
"Being silent will get you nothing but some quality time with Sven. Answers gets you options."

"Why don't you just get it over with? Imix won't spare you either way."

"Thank you for your kindness, my lady.", He said to Tindoome softly. "I am afraid that our friend has been sorely used.  Any aid would be most appreciated."

Turning to the rest of the group Caelebon said, "I am willing to do whatever I can to aid in our escape.  You spoke of equipment?  My people are notable archers and swordsmen and I don't believe I would embarrass them with my skills.  If you are willing, I would claim a bow and sword if those are available.  I doubt there is any mail that would fit me to be found."

"Even if he does not, I know the way. It is only a short distance from here through a well concealed door."

Ronalt gave a slight nod, "appreciated Prince Thrommel. I would also wish to thank you for your wisdom earlier. My desire for giantkin blood can sometimes push all reason from me."
"Though, I see it has all worked out with the release of all these prisoners."

Luthien takes the longsword he requested, and buckles on the sheath most gratefully. "Finally, I've got the weapon I know how to use again. This should work much better now."

Of course, his earlier advice to the elf doesn't seem so good now...

"Caelebon, are you sure you want to keep wearing that? I thought human sized chain would fit okay...but it really looks like it doesn't."

Caelebon began to fidget uncomfortably in the acquired armor. Apparently naked might be better. Humans were just so damnably bulky.  He quickly slipped out of the chain mail, which wasn't hard given its relative size.

"Rolf!" He called out, "Perhaps you will have better luck than I." He dragged the armor over to the larger man.

"I'll take the scimitar, longbow and a quiver of arrows. Given my lack of armor now, I'm likely more an asset with the bow." Caelebon nodded Luthien, "You don't know how right you were."

Iviana laid her hands on the area over Rofl's wounds and gave a quick prayer. For a moment the room was a little brighter and there was a faint of music in the distance, and Rolf's wounds began to close.

She headed over the Countess and looked at Sir Juffer, replying in the common tongue "Hmm... messy. I wish I'd come here first. But let's see." She prayed again, wincing at the depth of the wounds. "That should help" she said finally after a long session of prayer. "I'll probably need to spend some hours in meditation before I can help again though"

OK 2 CLW on Rolf for 4 hp back
And 3 CLW on the countess for 15 hp
And I'm out of healing

Iviana exhausts her healing capacity. Rolfs pain subsides and his wounds close, injuries now mainly just a memory.
The Countess likewise is physically fully healed for the most part, but the mental trauma she has suffered will need a lot longer to mend. The close and personal attentions of uncounted bugbears, ogres and other humanoids had done her no favours.

Equipment is shared out and the much larger party prepares to move on. Even the two merchants who'd cowered in the back of the cell as Amathaon, Haldan, Rolf, Luthien and the Prince had fought are now armed, if only with a crossbow and score of bolts each.

The prince leads the way out of the prison turns south, and then east through a door which had been believed to lead only into a disused storeroom. He manipulates a torch sconce and the south wall swings aside, opening the way into the fire temples bugbear dormitory area (msg #405 link to a message in this game). Taking the doorway in the western end of the south wall, he heads back to the scene of his capture.

Re: Who are you?

The door to the western side room is easily opened. The 30'x10' chamber is furnished similarly to the main room (see msg #254 link to a message in this game). It contains a large bed, two small side tables, a round table with four chairs, a stand with basin, ewer, and a small copper box, a wardrobe, and a brass brazier filled with brightly glowing coals and giving off wisps of sulphurous-smelling incense. A large brass chest with a heavy lock is at the foot of the bed.
The chest holds clothing, a suit of normal chain mail armour, a mace, and a sack containing gold. The top of the copper box is inlaid with sardonyx and holds herbs. The wardrobe holds a red silk robe with golden skulls on its back and sleeves, and with the eight-pointed fire symbol piqued on its front in garnets
On the table is a half written note which states, thus far, "Your rewards will be great if you bend your knee to Fire. Bring all of your forces here to me now, and swear fealty. If you fail to heed this advice... "

The eastern door opens to a 10 'x 20' side room. It is less lavishly furnished. It has a few tapestries and several small rugs, torches burning in wall sconces, a small table with a candelabra, a couch, two chairs, a chest, and a brazier. A book lies open on a small stand near the couch. A few serving pieces of brass and copper are scattered around, on the table and stand.

Only dried blood remains from the previous days battle, even the huge ogre bodies having been removed somehow.

"Belsornig, priest of the Water Temple, if I recall correctly," Yew commented. "One of the tasks Alrrem wished us to perform before he would release his hostage was  to 'convince' Belsornig to step aside."

"Tell us about him and his temple," Yew suggested to Alrrem. "Tell us where his temple is. No doubt you would be delighted to see us and them doing great harm to each other."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Before leaving the prison cells earlier Brother Yew had made sure that a number of other useful items were brought along by the party. He handed Iviana a bone map case to protect the scroll she had claimed from Alrrem. He handed a dagger to Celonor (sometimes even a mage needs a sharp blade to cut herself free from a sticky situation) and another to one of the merchants. He asked the two merchants to carry three small bags of metal powder (10-40 coins worth of gold, electrum and silver), a small bag of salt, a leg of salted pork, a cooking pot, scalpels, knives, a saw, needles, thread, 100 feet of rope, several candles and 3 torches. He decided to carry a fourth small bag himself and even ventured into one of the prison cells long enough to retrieve something that Luthien had thrown away earlier.

"Pardon me for interrupting, gentlemen." Caelebon said. "But would you mind explaining what is going on here?  Not the expansive explanation, of course. The more abbreviated version will do. To be specific, why are we travelling with him?" He pointed to Alrrem. Re: Who are you?

"I have to differ with you a little on your theology Luthien" Iviana said

"Sacrifice is an intrinsic part of worship. The gods value your gifts.  We give something of value to our god. It is not at all uncommon for people to give something to a deity, and fire is not an uncommon means of sacrifice. The things given are often useful or ceremonially representative of useful things. I myself have sacrificed animals to Lydia and burnt them using fire. The smoke ascends to heaven, and the gods partake of it. The gods like burnt animal meat, just as we do. I've also sacrificed usable musical instruments. To be meaningful a sacrifice should involve a transfer of something that matters from you to the god. That is often done by a priest ritually 'destroying' it. All the physical form of the item is destroyed, its essence is sent to the god receiving the sacrifice"

"Just because these people use fire to destroy things, doesn't make it evil to destroy things with fire. They also breath and walk and wear clothes. It's not evil to do those things either"

"De Gault does have a valid point though. It is not uncommon for some priests on the street of Gods to sacrifice a Ram, and then eat mutton every day for a week. I find such behaviour reprehensible, as it is stealing from your God. But it does none the less occur"

"I think though that while this theology is interesting, the real question is can we 'shut down the fire temple'. If there is loot there as well, that is all the better

Re: Who are you?

Alrrem chose not to respond to Haldans threats. Perhaps he saw them for what they were - nothing but empty words?

While others talk, Gwythe searches, gathering a number of items in the middle of the larger common room which was the scene of the earlier battle. This 20 'x 30' chamber is thickly strewn with rugs; carpets and tapestries cover the walls. Illumination comes from several candelabra, hanging lamps, and a fireplace. Plush furniture and soft cushions are everywhere. The colours are all bright — scarlet, hot orange, fiery gold, and brilliant blue. Small tables hold ewers and cups, and dishes of nuts and sweetmeats. A large box stands near the fireplace. The plastered ceiling is painted with scenes of demons and humans in lewd activities. Under a heap of pillows is a hooded robe of scarlet hue. Signs of recent charring cover everything.

From the chest in the western chamber (marked "H" on the game map) he obtains suit of human sized chain mail armour (probably Alrrems spare set), a horseman's mace, and a sack containing 100 gp.
The copper box, the top which is inlaid with sardonyx, is added the pile (has to be worth a bit). It holds a selection of herbs which Ronalt thinks might be something interesting (foraging non-weapon proficiency) but can't identify.
A red silk robe with golden skulls on its back and sleeves, and with the eight-pointed fire symbol piqued on its front in garnets comes from the wardrobe (the gems worth a fortune alone).

"At some stage one of our casters should check the whole collection to see if anything is enchanted," he suggests. "Have we finished searching this area now? Ronalt, do you still want to inspect the Fire Temple itself to see if your sword can be found, or shall we concentrate on finding a way out of here? With our numbers increased now there may be at least one among us who is able to approach close enough to those great locked doors at the top of the stairs to find a way to open them and let us all escape from this evil place."

He looked around for something to put the box in, as he wanted to have both hands free, if there was any fighting. If he can't find anything, then he would just hold onto it for now. The robe with the garnets looked nice, but way too cumbersome for the likes of him.

If they weren't carrying supplies, I'd say keep them, they'd be good as sacrificial lambs in combat. I think that box maybe worth 150 gp's. Those stones in the silk are probably worth more, but I'm not sure how to seperate them from the silk." After thinking about it, he decided to take the robe as well. Though he wasn't sure what to do with it. Looking at Hap, he said, "Hap, any ideas what to do with this robe? I can't wear it, but the jewels in it are too good to be left behind."

"Some of you have not seen the great hall yet, have you?" Yew observed. "Come with me. Everyone. I will show you the way. Then you can truly see the choices that face us. Up the stairs there are the great doors that we believe lead outside but they are locked and magically warded. Then there are several other exits from the great hall that we have not yet explored. Those are our choices. I would still consider it worthwhile to attempt the great doors again. The chance of success might be slim but the reward is likely to be freedom at last; certainly worth a few minutes of our time to make the attempt, in my humble opinion."

True to his word he sets off toward the great hall with the light crossbow he carries loaded and ready if needed.

Re: Who are you?

The party arrives quickly and without incident in the great hall. Over 200 feet long, it was evidently once the scene of great revels celebrating the triumphs of evil. The floor of the place is littered with skeletons, skulls, and bones of humans and various humanoids. Here and there are parts of broken chairs, stools, tables, benches, sideboards, buffets, cabinets, and cases. Much of the wreckage appears to have been carted off for unknown purposes and a clear path leads between all exits except the two wide stairways. Tapestries and trophies still remain on the walls in spots. The former show scenes of raiding, looting, pillage, and rapine; trophies include mummified heads, torn battle standards, hides and skins, battered shields, sundered armour, and a broken broadsword. Dozens of empty crescents and sconces line the walls. The broad steps in the middle of the "north" wall are of dull black stone, and the descending stair seems most depressing and horrible — though passable.

Ivianna shrugged. She would rather of kept him alive. But only a little bit. A man like that was treacherous and deceptive. There was every chance that he would of managed to trick them into serious danger. Alive there was a small chance of information. Dead there was little: the dead were no more likely to tell the truth than the living.

They still needed to get out of here though.

Re: Who do you think you are?

At Yew's suggestion, the party moved westward down the huge echoing hall. Soon the eastern end was lost in the gloom. Peering down the second wide opening in the south (A1) showed the walls of this 20' wide passage to be painted with scenes of gross evil, death, and destruction. Some also depict parties of worshippers and their sacrificial captives; each is led by a robed cleric. The great doors along the southern part of each wall are polished brass, with many more vile scenes and runes. Huge rings hang from their centres, for opening and closing.

Ignoring for the most part the passage in the south west corner of the hall (C) and those to the north (E) attention is given to the western way (D). Besides being a dogleg in shape and ending in a closed door, there's nothing particularly remarkable about it.

Re: Where do you think you are?

The door opens freely on oiled hinges, briefly tangling in a black curtain before pulling the cloth aside.
The plastered walls, paintings, wall hangings, two couches, and upholstered chairs in this room indicate that it was once a well-appointed place for important Temple guests. A heavy drape hangs on the eastern portion of the south wall. A brazier and pair of torches (in sconces) both light and warm the room. The 10' square alcove to the north contains a pair of rude cots and a small table; the latter holds a flagon and several ceramic mugs.

More importantly however are the two humans in leather armour wielding crossbows and short swords at their sides who happen to be standing in firing positions behind two more people in chain mail wielding shields and spears, long swords ready at their belts, and a half orc in plate mail and shield wielding a very large axe.

Nobody has much more than a heartbeat to take any of that in though as both crossbowmen fire, and the spears are thrown directly at the exposed Gwythe!
Fortunately only one bolt strikes him, the other bolt and both spears taking stone chips form the wall just inches from Luthien and Amathaon's heads!
A moment later and both spearmen draw swords and charge in company with the axeman while the crossbowmen begin reloading.

Roll initiative (1D10, add weapon speed factor, or spell casting time, or other relevant mod - see house rules thread).
Note the party was surprised

Yew raises the light crossbow he carries, aiming between Ronalt and Sven, and fires immediately. He aims for the spearman on the right if he can, or a crossbowman as he doesn't have confidence in his ability to penetrate the plate armour of the orc yet. The magic crossbow rearmed itself immediately and Yew found he was able to fire again before the other crossbowmen even finished reloading. He will aim at whichever spearman or crossbowman he can get the best shot at after everyone else has attacked.

OOC: rolled 2 for initiative but may not be relevant with crossbow of speed, as it shoots once at start of round and again at end of round. Rolled 19 and 15 to hit (THAC0 17) for 3hp and 4hp damage.

Re: Where do you think you are?

Yew fired past Gwythe's shoulder, the bolt driving through chainmail as if it wasn't there and sending the targeted spearman to the floor.

An instant later and Sven twitched, his heavy bolt shattering ineffectually on the stone wall.

Amathaon ducked, drew his short sword and made himself as small a target and obstacle as he could.

Ronalt enters the room to find the axeman and remaining spearman (now with drawn long sword) have moved up to impede his progress.
"Surrender now and we will take your parley."
His words are met with scorn and swinging blades as axe and sword slice at the Ranger, the latter missing but the axe smashing past Ronalts ineffectual defences and biting deep into flesh.

Gwythe sidesteps into Ronalts recently vacated spot, his back to the wall and magic short sword in hand.

Luthien barrels past Sven and almost tramples Gwythe in his haste to enter the fray. Enthusiasm doesn't make up for his inexperience however as his attack on the axeman goes wide.

Both black clad crossbowmen move to find better angles and fire - one at Ronalt's left flank, and the other at Luthien. Both miss however, Ronalts attacker barely avoiding impaling his own man in the process!

Sven dropped his crossbow to his right as Luthien pushed roughly past him and drew swords, but then scowls as he realises his advance was now blocked by the youngster!

Haldan changed weapons to his bow and struggled to see past the tall folk and make sense of what was going on.
The Prince and Arek maintained their positions, waiting to move up, or back, as the situation unfolded.

Yew, risking hitting either Ronalt or Luthien, shuffled to his right and fired again. The axeman was his only viable target however, even if the monk lacked faith in his weapons plate armour penetrating capability. Surprisingly his aim was true and the bolt struck a weak spot driving several inches into the axeman.

New round. New initiative roll, state your intended actions.
If I haven't mentioned your character specifically, assume your intended actions in this last round occurred without a hitch.

Luthien attacks the axeman again, his sword easily blocked by their shield. The door near the crossbowman (opened in the last round, but nobody noticed the change to the map) spills forth a number of reinforcements! Four chainmail and shield clad longswordsmen, a chainmail clad bastardswordsman, and a man wearing leather, carrying a shield and longsword (sheathed), a large war dart in hand.

Almost simultaneously, the rearguard spies even more heavily armed men burst from a nearby corridor, already arrayed in a battle line. This group consists of six longswordsmen in chain and shield (two clearly women), two halberdiers in scalemail, and two light crossbowmen in leather.

All four crossbowmen fire (two in each room), and the melee fighters facing the rearguard begin to advance.
Two of the bolts narrowly miss Ronalt (and those behind him), Iviana is scratched, and Rolf deflects the fourth with his shield. The ex-spearman swings his sword at Ronalt and misses.

Ronalt called his warning, "Watch this one! He's very skilled!" and swung his sword at the axeman scoring a telling, but not fatal hit. The axeman growls and retaliates hitting once, twice with massive blows!

In a panic, both Bill and Bob fire their crossbows, both bolts (thankfully perhaps) missing both friend and foe.

Haldan, moves up right behind Ronalt and Luthien (and in front of but below Brother Yew). Judging he had around a 50/50 chance of hitting one of his allies, but trusting in their armour should that event occur, he let loose at near point blank range.
His first arrow flew true, but was deflected by the axemans armour. The second however sunk into the back of Ronalts right leg, easily peircing the rangers chainmail.

The Prince thrust twice past Sven and between Ronalt and Luthien at the chainmail clad ex-spearman. The man stayed standing after the first hit, but dropped with the second.

Seeing the sudden opening, the dart man rapidly flicked three missiles at Ronalt, pulling his extra missiles from the back of his shield. Only the first struck home though.

Again Yew aims and fires. This time he misses Luthien, but strikes Ronalt squarely in the back, the bolt sinking in deep.

Looking at the situation closely, Amathaon realized he'd be wasting a dagger if he threw it now. There were too many people in the way and the door as well. So, he put his dagger back and continued to crawl across the ceiling and prepared to drop on the first fool to enter. Then, he'd stab them good, that is if no one was in the way.

He stood close to Luthien's back and pointed at the South Western swordsman's face, made eye contact and informed him with all the warmth of an iceberg "You die next, child. I will see to it."

Frostbrand was twitching in his hand, freezing the air around the blade impatiently and Sven was coiled like a steel spring ready to fly past Ronalt and at the swordsman's throat at the first opening.

Re: Where do you think you are?

Brother Yew was appalled at his disastrous last shot with the unfamiliar crossbow. He looked around desperately for another way to be of more assistance in this battle, then he realised the party was being attacked from the rear as well. He quickly stepped back and darted past Thromel and Arek (Amathaon is not in the way as he is climbing the wall) and past the double bend in the passage so he could see the enemy out in the great hall.

If he thinks he can safely do so without endangering his allies (again) he will pluck one of the two beads from the necklace about his neck and hurl it out into the middle of the group of enemies in the great hall.

If he doesn't think he throw one safely he will hand the necklace to Celonor instead, telling her it is a necklace of missiles and that if she plucks and throws one it will explode in a 40-foot diameter fireball.

Either way, if he has time, Yew will hand the necklace to Celonor with either one or two beads remaining on it at the end of this round.

Frustrated, Haldan had released his arrows in spite of the danger. After the fight, he'd claim that someone else had fired those shots... But in the meantime, it seemed there was nothing he could do with this bow.

Therefore, he stowed his missile weapon, with the intention of switching back to his shiny new sword. He eyed the west side of the doorway, planning to put his back to it and wait for the enemy to push through.

And if the party pushed through instead, well then he could follow them in.

Re: Where do you think you are?

Iviana suddenly realised that she had gone from being a long way from any conflict to being at the front line. She couldn't see into the main room to work out if this was 'the defenders flanking them', or a group of other unrelated people that were picking now to attack them. In any event it didn't look fun.

The main fighters were busy now, and these folks looked hard. It didn't take long for her to decide what to do: just slow them down, and hopefully stop the missile weapon users from getting the others.

Iviana had been preparing for this for a while. She wasn't much of a wizard, but she had at least one decent spell for a situation like this. As she exclaimed a word of power, she reached for a few fragments of spiders web that she had ready to hand in a pouch. She blew on them, and they flew forwards, growing in size, anchoring themselves to the walls on either side of the hallway, forming a sticky gooey mass around the combatants. Her mother would of just blown the crap out of them with a ball of fire, but Iviana hoped this would do this trick.

OOC Looking at the picture, IIRC the corridor is 10' across, so it looks like the big hall is 40' across. IIRC 1" is 10' in D&D, and I have 8 cubic inches of webs, so the webs go back 20' and are 10' high http://pandaria.rpgworlds.info.../adnd_spells.htm#Web

Re: Where do you think you are?

Brother Yew begins moving at great speed.
Tindoome moves into the corner of the corridor and begins casting.
The longswordsman closest to the door reaches down and pulls the fallen spearman clear of the front line and begins to bind his wounds. Meanwhile, another swordsman back next to the far crossbowman likewise tends to the wounds of the other fallen spearman.
Tindoome completes her spell and abruptly disappears!
Iviana starts casting.
The dart thrower steps to his right. The three unoccupied swordsmen begin moving.
Brother Yew rips free a bauble from his necklace and tosses it into the great hall where it erupts in a massive fireball. All but one (a woman) falls to the floor badly burnt and smoking. Not surprisingly she appears somewhat stunned at suddenly being alone.
The dart thrower throws three more darts at Ronalt. One misses entirely but two stick into his chainmail.
Arek begins casting.
Haldan joins Gwythe against the wall.
Iviana completes her spell and catches the hapless survivor of the fireball in sticky webs who becomes lost to sight. Celanor, left without a target, and little need even if the lone survivor was still visible, saves the charge and does not use the wand.
"Push in Gentlemen, Sven urged. If you want to live you have to press them - fight and move at once! Ronalt Left, Luthien Right - Flank him the pair of you! Bring him down!"
Both crossbowmen complete their reloading and fire at Ronalt. His armour stops one bolt, but the other stabs through.
A longswordsman, backed up by another and the bastardswordsman, leaps into the gap recently vacated by the fallen spearman and hacks at the seriously injured Ronalt (but misses).
The axeman, grinning ferociously, chops at the beleaguered Ranger once more. His swing is less than accurate however, distracted as Luthien pokes his sword at him with something almost resembling competence!
Switching his attention Sven again spoke up, "You die next, child. I will see to it."
Arek completes his Prayer spell (everyone is now +1 to rolls).
Ronalt, faced with an enemy that reacted quicker than he, and with coordination only training and long practice could bring, is unable to move forward. Instead he slashed ineffectually with his sword.
Brother Yew hands the necklace of missiles to Celonor.
Amathaon spends the round crawling across the ceiling, almost loosing his grip at the highest point and falling on top of the Prince.
The Prince finishes off the round by stepping into the space vacated by Brother Yew, and stabbing the already seriously wounded axeman (who falls to the floor).

New round, new initiative rolls, etc.
The rear is about as secure as it's possible to get with the great hall completely blocked by webs and only a small corridor to the south open. The front however is a meat grinder.

Luthien moved quickly, stepping over the axeman and striking the chainmail clad bastardswordsman with his own blade. Luthiens sword cut deep into the man, inflicting a grievous wound which would normally have dropped his opponent like a stone - he just bared his teeth and grinned...

The dart thrower moved in to Luthien's flank, lashing out with his own long sword, while another swordsman also attacked. Both, very fortunately for the now almost surrounded knight-in-training, miss.
Ronalt is also attacked, and also missed.

The bastardswordsman, still grinning despite the blood freely flowing from his wound, sliced once, twice at Luthien, his weapon held in both hands. the big weapon skidded off Luthiens shield the first time, but smashed through and into his thigh.

Both crossbowmen fire again simultaneously with Ronalts attack, seemingly unconcerned about the danger of hitting their own people. One narrowly misses the ranger, while the second glances off the bastardswordsmans mailed hand.

Ronalt steps forward over the fallen axeman behind Luthien and slashes hard at the nearby longswordsman, cutting the man down with a single blow. His second attack was easily fended off by the dart thrower.

Seeing his chance, Sven leapt gleefully into the fray, two swords flashing and slicing as he attacked the dart thrower. His enthusiasm however is not enough as he almost stumbles over the fallen swordsman. the Prince follows along behind Sven, thrusting past him with the long spear and successfully skewering the dart thrower. the injury isn't as significant as could be hoped for though as the man fights on.

Igniting her new sword, Iviana shot forward and set the webs alight. The flames spread quickly and a scream was heard within the inferno before being suddenly cut short.

Brother Yew collected Bill and Bob, and moved to watch the southern corridor. Neither of the merchants were too happy about being dragged potentially into harms way, but the fierce fight at the front and slow forward progress seemed to convince them.

"Switch!" Luthien called, stepping back and allowing Ronalt to slide forward into the forward position. The ranger dutifully attacked as he stepped up, but failed to inflict any injury, his own wounds having taken a greater toll than he'd thought.
The Prince dropped the spear and spoke, "Fragarach". His sword suddenly in hand, he shadowed Ronalt and stepped into his vacated position.

Sven smashed the leather clad dart thrower with the bastard sword, greatly staggering, but not dropping the rather surprised recipient. The dart thrower yelled "[Language unknown: Ast et omint!]" and backed away while simultaneously the two unengaged longswordmen sprang forward from where they'd been tending their fallen comrades, and attacked Sven. Both weapons strike, but fail to penetrate the walking corpses armour.

The bastardswordsman smiled at Ronalt, "Fresh meat!"
His weapon flicked out and sliced into the rangers ribs.

The crossbowmen let fly again as Haldan and Gwythe pass through the door. Both bolts once again fail to find a mark.

Yew shepherds the two merchants back into the relative safety of the corridor while Iviana searched for survivors.

Arek slaps Luthien on the shoulder and chants something unintelligible (even to those who understand his native language). Luthien's pain disappears and wounds close completely. "Tha's all I've go'."

Luthien considered diving back into the fray...but the truth was, he wasn't actually doing much good there, unless he could find a spot where he could find unarmored opponents to hit. Sadly, his skill just wasn't up to the task of getting by armor.

Instead, he decided to go over the field of unconscious people on the OTHER side of the battle...and see if any still lived.

"Not these two please Rolf" Iviana said pointing to two woman who were on the floor. "I want them alive and able to answer questions. They are no threat at the moment" She had no particular problem with Rolf ensuring people she thought were dead were really dead: the idea of them leaping on her by suprise later, didn't fill her with glee.

Iviana withdrew some bandages from a pouch. she kept most of her supplies in her backpack, but she'd found before that sometimes seconds count, and bandage in hand she knelt by the first of the woman in order to apply a bandage to the worst of her wounds

4 chainmail
2 scale mail
1 leather armour
3 shields (medium)
3 long swords
2 short swords
1 halberd
1 light crossbow (with string burnt away)
1 case, bolts, score capacity
24 bolts (four remaining from the second very scorched case which didn't make it)
3 sets of black clothing, adorned with the device of the red horned skull (one female, the others male)

Re: Where do you think you are?

Iviana completed her bandaging of the two badly wounded woman. Their prognosis without magical healing wasn't good, and she certainly wasn't very worried about them leaping up and stabbing anyone. She sighed at all the devastation, the cries of the dying, the moans of the critically wounded. At least Rolf, had stopped those, although she winced at the method he had used. Still she knew she would have to harden her heart when she entered their complex, and she'd tried to do so. She reminded herself that almost everyone here worshiped vile evil demons in full knowledge of the horror they caused. Still it was hard for her to see all the dead bodies around.

Sighing she stood, graceful despite the plate armour. At times like that she half wished the armour was like that on the statues and pillars she'd seen of warrior women. Their platemail had looked more like a platemail bikini.

Iviana headed into the main area where she saw the captives. She knew her hands were still covered with blood. And she wasn't in the best mood ever. And she really wasn't in much mood for long discussions "Talk" she said to the three captives. "Where is the way out. We will be prodding you in front of us, on that way out, so if there are any ambushes or traps you spring them. If you don't talk" she held up her bloody hands "This is what happened to the last lot, that didn't talk. And if you survive me, then I'll give you to Sven"

Re: Where do you think you are?

Hearing the shouts of surrender, Yew instructs Bob and Bill to remain on guard, saying he will be back soon. Then he darts back to speak to Ronalt, Arek, Iviana and the others. He nods as Iviana starts the questioning.

"Also ask what temple this part belongs to, whether this is all of that temple's force or are there more inside? If you want a guided tour of this temple you might ask them to oblige, if this was all the defenders. If not, ask them to sketch a rough map of the place. I would suggest that offering them their freedom once outside would be a fair reward. They would be free to flee as far and as fast as they can, as the only hope of saving their lives at all."

Then he heads back to rejoin Bob and Bill.

He suggests to Rolf and Luthien, "It would be a good idea to get all their gear together in one place so that one of our spellcasters can check the whole lot for any magical items. Perhaps it would be quickest just to take this lot through to the other room and pile it with their dead rather than stripping every body completely."

Iviana nodded to the captive, thinking that his chances of living had just gone up. And there was some ideas in what he had said that were interesting. 'We don't work for one of the factions'. That kind of implied that there were factions.. she would hazard a guess that the elements each had their own faction, and the trolls ... probably they were a faction too. But it also implied an overarching structure. Someone willing to hire these people to stop things getting out of hand. Still that could wait for later. She could see Gwythe was looking for people to help guard, and as the wounded were as cared for as they could be, she headed over to him

"Are we going to try and get out, or fort up, heal and rest" she asked. The choices were pretty clear. It sounded like they could probably just walk out. The key word being 'probably'. If they stayed and forted up though, they would be asking any faction that wanted to, to come and have a go at them. All in all it wasn't a very attractive set of options. Re: Where do you think you are?

Pushing through the second door, Gwythes party entered into another chamber. This 20' x 30' room is lit by four torches in wall sconces. This place contains a pair of beds, a trestle table, two benches, two chairs, a writing table, a wardrobe, and four stools. At the foot of each bed is a large chest. A small fire burns in the fireplace in the south wall, over which part of a sheep is cooking on a spit. A flowing water fountain in the east wall spills into a basin below it. Rush mats cover the floor, and a few ragged tapestries adorn the walls. Two small kegs (of beer, by their aroma) are on the table; numerous drinking vessels and dishes are on wall shelves.
The body of a man is in the north east corner, laying face down, feet towards you. Blood still flows from a neat slice across his throat - evidently he was taken by surprise from behind in the last few minutes. Horned red skulls are worked on the chest and back of his cloak. His leather armour and falchion were clearly not sufficient to protect him from his absent assailant (note this is not the dart thrower).

Through the other door is another small 10' square side room lit by a hanging lamp of dull metal. It contains a bed, stand, chair, wardrobe, and chest. A small rug is on the floor near the bed. A cup, ewer, and box are on the stand. In the southwest corner is a black candelabrum with four unlit candles.

In with the prisoners, it's found that the axeman and his two fallen sword wielding companions (the ones who threw the spears at the beginning) are half orcs (everyone else is human). Each is garbed in black under their armour; the axeman also had a black cape.

Inspection of the door out into the great hall reveals a cunningly concealed peep hole. With the heavy black drape down, no light escapes to the other side to give it away, while allowing the guard to keep an eye on the corridor outside.

Items recovered (additional to the previous list, but not including the body with the slit throat above):
2 leather armour
7 chain mail
7 shield
2 light crossbow with 12 bolts ea
2 throwing spear
2 short sword
6 long sword
1 Battle axe
1 Plate mail
1 dagger with a tourmaline set in the pommel (Axemans)
1 bastard sword
1 gold chain set with a large jet gem (bastard swordsman)
1 belt pouch (had 27 of the gold in it belonged to bastard swordsman)
Platinum 6

Re: Where do you think you are?

When he hears that they have secured the guardrooms and barracks Yew moves Bob and Bill and anyone else still out there back into the western guardroom where the main battle was fought. Then he works out how to secure that guardroom door from inside and locks or bars the door accordingly so no one will be able to come in from the great hall while they are all either resting or escaping. Finally he asks Bob and Bill to take turns keeping watch through the peephole in that door in case anyone does approach from the great hall.

When that entry is secure he turns his attention to the question of finding the exit. He starts by finding out what the prisoners have already told Iviana and the others that questioned them, which seems to amount to ... "Go through Brunk's room, then the barracks and turn left. Can't miss the stairs. Then just keep heading south whenever there's a choice. Only Feldrin and Brunk really know their way around." Brunk was the fleeing orcish one (the dart thrower?).

Yew then turns to the prisoners himself.

"Show us the stairs out of here if you ever want to see daylight and freedom again," he instructs them. "You mentioned two names, too. Feldrin and Brunk. Are they here among the dead or wounded? Was Brunk the dart thrower who ran away when the battle was lost? And who is this last man with his throat cut? Why would he have been murdered in here?"

The crossbowman seemed to be the most talkative, the other two being either a bit too tight lipped still, or scared out of their wits.
"Yeah Brunk was the one throwing darts. He likes to poison them first."
"That one with the cut throat, that's Feldrin. He was the leader of this group. Brunk hates him and I wouldn't be surprised if that's his work there."

Yew listened to the informant's information before quickly moving into the other room to pass on the news. He spoke quietly to Iviana and Arek first then told Gwythe and Sven about the torch that opens the secret door.

"Beware of that dart thrower, though. He must be one of their leaders. The prisoners say he is called Brunk and uses poison on those darts he uses."

Then he asks Gwythe, "Is that leather armour better quality than what you wear already? Iviana says it is enchanted."

After thinking for a moment longer he adds, "When you are ready to check out the stairs I will come with you."

Re: Who do you think you are?

While the spellcasters and their "protectors" settled in to rest, Gwythe's advance scouting party pushed through the secret door to the north revealing a passage lined with double bunks, ten in all. Each has a straw mattress, and two small boxes are tucked underneath, head and foot. Three torches are mounted in wall sconces, but only one, on the south wall, is lit.
A not-very-secret door is in the west wall at the bend in the corridor. Above it, positioned horizontally, is a large beam, studded with sharp spikes. It seems to be fastened to a hinge at the west end, and supported by a cord at the east, which connects to a fastening on the door. None of the bunks block the door or stand below the beam.

Amathaon and Gwythe open the door with Yew and Sven's crossbows covering them.
This 40' x 50' chamber was evidently one in which new arrivals were hosted to the delights of the Temple; at least, this is what the wall murals depict. A few pieces of battered furniture —  couches, chairs, and stands — remain along the walls. In the centre of the room is a shallow pool, its fountain apparently stopped and the decorative statue, of a minotaur sitting on a throne, much dirtied.
Several skeletons lie about the place, and some odd skulls and bones as well — mostly humans, but some humanoids also. None of the many cressets and walls sconces are lit; no torches remain.

I think our duty of care is clear: let's get these people to safety first, and then worry about her. She is invisible, and capable. Being invisible... it's kind of hard to go looking for her..."

"We'll see if she rejoins us shortly. If not I will pray to Lydia for guidance"

She nodded to Ronalt. She would head up the stairs after the others

Despite his concerns about Tindo, Yew joins them as they start to climb the stairs.

Re: Who do you think you are?

Resting apparently no longer a preferred option, Arek gathered up all the remaining people, including the prisoners, and followed along with the group.

Up again

This 10' wide spiral staircase circles clockwise up a shaft 20 feet in diameter. The stairs have no rail, but otherwise appear safe and sound.
