Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
She leads the way to her house but stays outside as the four friends enter. They enter the modest dwelling and find it disturbingly silent. Upon reaching Aeren’s room, they find Alergast Barett on his belly, as if he had crawled into the closet. He is not moving.

What do you do? And roll Notice checks with your post, for my sanity.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
The man is, unfortunately, dead--and his corpse has been partially eaten.

There is a blood-curdling scream from within the closet!

Need Notice checks from Hywel and Kelar as well. I will be posting an ad for a replacement player for Jereth.

Upon seeing the body, Hywel drew a beltaxe.  The scream drew his full attention right to the closet.  He stepped to the closet door, ready to ward any assault away from Cyrus....and to see what could be seen...

Notice - 10

16:46, Today: Hywel of Clan Silverscroll rolled 10,5 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+4)10,5. Notice!

Jereth steps in to see the body, but seeing the face of Cyrus he knows it will not help. He feels bad for the scene and can't focus, entering the room but not noticing anything.

23:06, Today: Jereth rolled 1,0 using d4-2,d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of 3,2. Notice (corrected with the wild die...sorry about that).

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
The shrieking turns out to be tied to a largish goblin with blood-smeared face who springs from the closet. He appears enraged that you liberated the body of the homeowner and seems intent on taking out his anger on you. He is clearly feral or mad!

The only one who is ready for the goblin is Hywel, who gets to go before the goblin in the surprise round. Your move, Hywel! The Goblin is only 10' away from you and your companions.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Hywel shouts a hard, multi-harmonic series of sorcerous syllables and places his free hand across his chest.  Skin hardens and darkens as it takes on the essence of iron.  As the iron effect spreads, the dwarf made, Axe in hand, moves to intercept the mad goblin's charge, "Ware! Goblin!"

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Hywel's tactic could not have worked better--the goblin immediately saw & smelled dwarf and charged Hywel, a broken dagger in his mad hands. However, his attempt to disembowel the dwarf fails the goblin's blade bounces off of Hywel's magically hardened skin!

The goblin draws a Joker and parlays that to get a solid hit but rolls insufficient damage to hurt Hywel.

All the PCs are up! Everyone's within melee range of the goblin. You would all get a +3 Gang Up bonus on him if you all engage him.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!

Hywel let's the rusty dagger skitter off his armored hide and takes advantage of the goblins resulting overbalance.  As the others move threateningly in, the military wizard presses the attack.  He steps into the wild goblin's guard and slashes his axe from low to high.

Cyrus held up his staff, but there was not much he could do in these cramped quarters. He instead positioned himself just past the doorway to the bedroom. Should the goblin make a dash for it, he would have to go through the witch.

13:20, Today: Cyrus Weaver drew the single card: 9C using a deck of 54 cards. Initiative.

The party pummels the goblin, who proves resilient but still takes a beating...

Spent all his Bennies on soak rolls, he did. He walks away Shaken with two Wounds.

Next round:
Hywel has the Black Joker--he can go any time he wants, plus +2 on all rolls (including damage).

Jereth and Cyrus can go after Hywel but before the goblin. Kelar, hang out until after the goblin goes.

Your moves!

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!

Its likely a furious desperate struggle in those close quarters with a feral and desperate goblin.  But, dwarves train for such close fighting.  Hywel let his compatriots press the attack as he recovered from his last heavy slash.  Bringing his axe up this time, he found an opening and brought his beltaxe down like a smith's hammer...

Attack - 10, assuming Raise.  Damage - 29(if Raise was correct)
Round 2/3 - Ironskin
Round 3 Card - 10D

20:20, Today: Hywel of Clan Silverscroll drew the single card: 10D using a deck of 54 cards. Round 3 Initiative.

20:19, Today: Hywel of Clan Silverscroll rolled 10,8 using d6+6,d6+6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,2. Attack! Gang Up+Wild Attack

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
The scene was geting messy, but as soon as they finished with all goblins, they could bring peace to the place. And that was the only thing Jereth had in mind when he waved his sword from the last slash to strike another.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Oh, okay!

Once the goblin falls under Hywel's axe, Jereth lowers his sword. The last hit spilled blood and guts on the floor and brought a sudden silence to the room. "I guess this is it" Jereth says as he takes another look on the place to be sure of his words. Unable to hear or see anything he just turns hinself to his friends "Are we all fine? Anyone needs assistance?"

22:41, Today: Jereth rolled -1,2 using d4-2,d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of 1,4. Notice.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
Hywel stared at the downed goblin and tugged his axe back loose from the greenskin corpse.  "Fine here," Hywel reported.  He then closed his eyes for a moment, releasing the arcane knot of energy that maintained his magic.  Ás his eyes opened, his iron gray skin began to crack.  Dissolving into flakes and rust, then nothingness.

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
"Well, not everyone came out of this unscathed..." Cyrus said as he returned and knelt over Alergast's body. The partially eaten corpse was not something his son and wife should see. Taking the linen's from the child's bed, he wrapped and covered the body, leaving the head and face exposed (and cleaned those up as best he could.).

Re: Chapter 2: Local Heroes!
When the group heads out, Amalee awaits them eagerly, her kids waiting with friends and with Sheriff Hemlock. When she hears of her husband's fate, she has a complete breakdown. The Sheriff does his best to comfort her. He thanks the four for helping and arranges to have the Barett family stay at the cathedral for a few days.

Amele’s sister from Magnimar soon arrives in Sandpoint to take the distraught family back south to live with her. Kelar encounters her as the family moves to leave. When she learns who Kelar is, she shoots him a cold glare and mutters, “Too bad you heroes weren’t a bit more thorough in your ‘heroing.’”

Congratulations! Everyone gets an Advance, including our new player, Martak. (Sometimes it's good to be the new guy :-))

Continuing the story in Chapter 3.

2 - I assume by heard of Kelar, you meant heard he used to be an adventurer?

Kelar was known to the sister for being the shopkeep and the man who helped stop the goblin invasion. He doesn't know if she knows anything about his prior time as an adventurer.

Kelar also looks into the tunnel in the closet. It appears to Kelar that the golbin must have run into this house during the raid, found a loose floorboard in the closet, frantically hacked an opening large enough for him to fit into the enclosed crawlspace under the house, and pulled a fur over the hole to hide. Kelar pieces together that the family dog, Petal, must have kept the goblin penned up for several days before the goblin finally killed the dog and eventually the dad. Had the party not acted when they did, the rest of the family would likely have died as well.
