Re: Chapter 5: Murder Most Foul
Zantu's face loses all its color but he does not hesitate. He ushers Odin back into the back into a side chapel and asks Cyrus to join him.

He explains the Desnan ritual but asks Cyrus to join in as well, using his own access to powers to assist with the ritual.

Cyrus, give me a Faith roll. Odin, give a Knowledge (Arcana) roll.

Re: Chapter 5: Murder Most Foul
Cyrus was not too far removed from his days as an assistant, so he he simply did what he was told and followed Zantu's lead. It did not take him long, however, to understand the ritual on his terms and contribute.

10:52, Today: Cyrus Weaver rolled 1,4 using 1d6,1d10, rerolling max with rolls of 1,4.  Faith.

Nah, let's spend a bennie.

10:53, Today: Cyrus Weaver rolled 2,16 using 1d6,1d10, rerolling max with rolls of 2,(10+6)16.  Faith #2.

Better. :)

Re: Chapter 5: Murder Most Foul
Working through the particulars with Cyrus, Zantu leads the ritual and, two hours later, Odin's face rather abruptly clears. His craving for meat is entirely gone and he feels wholly himself again.

Zantu brings the pair back to the others. "If we are to exorcise this house, we must spend a bit of time preparing. Will you all aid me in preparing? There are rituals to be managed, and we will need some brave souls to help carry rather a large quantity of holy water to the site."

"Brave souls with strong backs," Cyrus said, putting himself out of the running. "There are secrets of the house yet to be retrieved. I will help with the ritual, of course, but we might learn more about its origins and its role in recent events, if we have time to investigate beforehand."

"I give you acclaim for phrasing 'water wenches' so eloquently, sage."  Aradhel replied, her ego a little bruised by the fact that's all she was good for here.

Re: Chapter 5: Murder Most Foul
The cleric looks puzzled at Aradhel's comment and then smiles. "Firstly, do not call me 'sage.' While I am honored by the title, I do not deserve it. I am a cleric of Desna, not a scholar. You may simply call me by my name.

"Secondly, you do not understand me. I do not need you to simply carry holy water. I will need many more than two people. What I need is your assistance in finding and coordinating at least twenty people to help carry the holy water urns. This is a matter where you and Jereth could find and supervise those people, in addition to anything you wish to carry."

He turns to Cyrus. "I do hear your point, Cyrus, but I do not know how we would investigate it further without cleansing the house first. It strikes me as likely that the Foxgloves' own papers and journals are your first and best source of information regarding the matter."

Re: Chapter 5: Murder Most Foul
Jereth had visibly relaxed when Odin returned seeming in much better health and less infected by an evil fungus.  Listening to Zantu, he simply nodded; he was used to heavy lifting jobs and had assumed it was that sort as well.

At the mention of organizing help, he stood straighter, "I think I can gather up that many hands.  Rouse some of the Watch."

"And I'd like to find those journals before they're soaked in holy water," Cyrus smiled. "How long will the ritual take once we get the water train moving?"

Re: Chapter 5: Murder Most Foul
The cleric laughs. "We will not soak the whole house--just the area of fungus in the basement. That sounds like the epicenter of the possession. The ritual will take several hours, I'm sure."

Some rolls, to get them out of the way: Jereth, you can make a Spirit check to see how well you do in recruiting others.

Odin and Cyrus may roll Knowledge (Arcana) and Faith respectively for me. Aradhel may apply her skills or background creatively to aid the situation. No rolls are required to carry holy water."

Re: Chapter 5: Murder Most Foul
LOL I have got nothin'.  This situation just doesn't play into Aradhel's character concept at all.

And that's okay, not everyone is good for everything or there'd be only one character.

Aradhel tried to help but that basically amounted to not getting in the way.

Re: Chapter 5: Murder Most Foul
The party works hard for the remainder of the day, recruiting half the Guard, getting the rather skeptical sherriff's permission to use their help, waiting while the cleric consecrates a ridiculous amount of holy water, transporting it all to the house, getting into the basement--which turns out to be hard, as the house keeps scaring anyone who walks in. It is Aradhel who ultimately pulls each pot-bearer through the building and leads them into the basement and the sub-basement, where Odin and Cyrus help the cleric throw the holy water ritualistically onto the fungus. The water steams and boils on touch as it is thrown, but soon the fungus begins to appear almost normally wet. Finally, six hours later, a round of holy water and prayer causes the fungus to suddenly animate and tear free from the wall. The thing howls in a sloshy, barely human voice, then crumbles to dust—the haunt of Foxglove Manor is thusly exorcised, and while the building retains its unwelcoming aura, it is no longer haunted.

The party is then able to spend time figuring out what happened. What appears to have happened is that Vorel Foxglove--Aldon Foxglove's grandfather--tried to turn himself into a lich, but was foiled by his wife, resulting in the awful fungus-possession that the party encountered. His son, Traver Foxglove, had tried to live in the building but eventually went mad, killing his wife.

What happened with Aldern himself is less clear. It seems likely that his exposure to the curse turned him into a ghoul, but the more interesting question became: why was he not driven mad before he discovered the fungus and turned into a ghoul?

In the house's cavern, in the laboratory where the party found Aldern, they also find this letter:

letter:
Aldern—
You have served us quite well. The delivery you harvested from the caverns far exceeds what I had hoped for. You may consider your debt to the Brothers paid in full. Yet I still have need of you, and when you awaken from your death, you should  nd your mind clear and able to understand this task more than in the state you lie in as I write this.

You shall remember the workings of the Sihedron ritual, I trust. You seemed quite lucid at the time, but if you  nd after your rebirth that you have forgotten, return to your townhouse in Magnimar. My agents shall contact you there soon—no need for you to bother the Brothers further. I will provide the list of proper victims for the Sihedron ritual in two days’ time. Commit that list to memory and then destroy it before you begin your work. The ones I have selected must be marked before they die, otherwise they do my master no good and the greed in their souls will go to waste.

If others get in your way, though, you may do with them as you please. Eat them, savage them, or turn them into pawns—it matters not to me.

—Your Mistress, Wanton of Nature’s Pagan Forms

A quick inquiry about Aldern turns up the fact that he did, in fact, have a residence in Magnimar--to which the party might have keys, found in his possession--and in Magnimar, city-state of Varisia, there may be more answers to questions...

Cyrus lingered on the letter for several minutes, trying to parse its words and understand the meaning beyond what was written. Consulting with Odin, he pointed at the signature and asked, "Who gives themselves the title of 'Wanton'? Have you heard it used before?"

Re: Chapter 5: Murder Most Foul
Odin has not, in fact, heard of this title before. It strikes him likely, though, that the title is an affectation of a cleric or spiritual leader of some hedonistic religious cult.

"No, that's what I assumed," Cyrus shook his head. "What is it with priests and their titles?"

"Well, it seems that we need to head to Magnimar if we want to dig deeper into this mystery. But to be honest, I think I need a couple of weeks off. All this adventure has really drained my spirit."

Jereth looked over the leter again as they discussed, "Aye...  Seems like we must be off to Magnimar next if we are to continue loking into the matter.  For me, of course, I'll need to see if the Sheriff wishes me to continue this investigation.  We are getting far outside the bounds of my little town here."

Jereth, make a Persuasion check to see if you can get the sheriff to let you off duty to go to Magnimar--or convince him it is in the course of duty that you go.

It takes a bit of insistence on Jereth's part, but the sheriff releases Jereth and Aradhel to pursue this matter in the great city. It takes a couple days for the party to collect themselves and head out...

Continued in Chapter 6!
