Re: OOC Discussion

In reply to Titus Blackwell (msg # 227):

Are we more likely to be able to make camp going around, or staying on the quicker path? Would I know of any caves in these hills (perhaps my love bear)?

Would I know of any specific dangers in this area, i.e.- reasons to not make a fire, predators, etc.

LMK if any of this merits a roll. I want to understand the answers before I start directing the party.

Re: OOC Discussion

In reply to Uldaf Asbjorn (msg # 228):

Just from background, you'd know the likely dangers:

The terrain is rocky and rolling with deep valleys and sharp bluffs.  However, there are almost no trees so there is no cover from rain, etc and little kindling or firewood.

Predators include mostly wolves, but yes some bears which could be a problem.

Going the 'scenic way' would be less exhausting but would very likely include camping for the night because you won't make the town before dark.  Alternatively you could travel in the dark if you'd like.  The scenic route is also more likely to get you lost.

Making a fire requires ranging far from your camp for wood since it's not plentiful.  Fire will deter wolves (from the fire itself) but make you easy to find and you could be attacked if you wander from the fire (way to get wood).

If there are bandits or the like, a fire would certainly alert them.

The 'direct route' involves going in a more straight path and requires more climbing of obstacles than going around.  It will be more physically taxing.  It will be faster assuming everyone can keep up and nobody gets injured climbing up and down etc.

Re: OOC Discussion

In reply to GM (msg # 229):

Are the folks comprising the "away team" going to look wealthy or poor to a bandit? I don't feel like any of us have much of value, but then I don't know how that compares to the average traveler.

If I were a bandit, I would be happy to attack merchants or families in their carts or shopkeepers or the like. I would be less likely to attack clearly armed folks -- even in force.

Because the first rule on banditry is "You can't spend it if you're dead." They'd have to be desperate indeed.

I imagine godrick and titus look rather appealing, and lump with his pack of stuff probably looks like easy pickings.  The rest of us are a mixed bag of mostly armed folk, so it probably depends on how many bandits we're talking about.

Do bandits typically have medics? Or are the northmen mostly cowards?

It just seems like in a world where getting knicked by a blade usually means a festering horrible wound that slowly and painfully kills you dead, you'd not want to attack anybody who could fight back no matter how many of you there are.

To clarify, I'd totally expect to be pounced on after we've collected some taxes. But at the moment we don't have anything worth the risk IMO.

And yet it really happened in history...  ;P

But true.  Bandits are not normally dumb enough to attack groups larger or better armed than they are.  Keep in mind though, that festering wounds kill everyone, not just bandits, so the people being robbed might also be unwilling to fight.  It's only money after all.

Historically, for example, Pirates would employ massively overwhelming numbers in their fights.  This was for several reasons, but the top one was that they would REALLY rather their prize surrender without a fight.

Smart bandits will employ trickery, overwhelming numbers, surprise, or something else in addition to violence.  Discretion is one of their tools.

I think we are all quite aware that Uldaf is also a pseudo demonspeaker and in times of great energy knows the name of the wind.

Uldaf (and Matt) are honestly in a holding pattern in this game. They both know there is a shoe waiting to drop, but until it does, all they can both do is press on..

Real talk: did Uldaf burn down the town of Trebon?

And yeah, I have nothing to do or contribute really until the story moves forward a bit more. Brennan's agreeable to walking in the woods. Let's see what happens.

Not a complaint. We're getting frequent updates, you're giving the party and opportunity to congeal, and it's a nice change of pace from our other games.

It's got a slow burn thing going.

Yeah, I'm not seeing anybody else at this point. It doesn't take long to cross a 20 foot bridge, even a crappy one. We'd hear their horses from a ways off. If there's already dangers nearby, there's nothing we can do about that one way or the other.

I have no fear in or out of game that I can cross the bridge barring GM wankery.
