But true. Bandits are not normally dumb enough to attack groups larger or better armed than they are. Keep in mind though, that festering wounds kill everyone, not just bandits, so the people being robbed might also be unwilling to fight. It's only money after all.
Historically, for example, Pirates would employ massively overwhelming numbers in their fights. This was for several reasons, but the top one was that they would REALLY rather their prize surrender without a fight.
Smart bandits will employ trickery, overwhelming numbers, surprise, or something else in addition to violence. Discretion is one of their tools.
