First by telling me I've never been awake you have given yourself away as a cleric.  Also given your calculating and hesitant way you went about the course you are clearly very concerned with preservation of your own well being.

Given that you could not see the giant surprise on the other side of the wall you have clearly either had others watching your back or have never had to watch it yourself... your choice

I feel like I am in for another round of mental whiplash between this guy and Rebecca.  Though I think I'm going to dial back the asshole a few notches.  You are actually supposed to like him.

A bit more Ed Elrich from full metal alchemist.  I get the crap kicked out of me but still come out on top with a reputation that bears out.

I've got my concept all fleshed out. I'll work on numbers and stuff tonight. He's going to be young (16-20), secretive, skeptical/skittish, well intentioned, smart beyond his years, and with absolutely no wisdom to show for it.

I'm thinking the man with a secret + sean ashmore from legend of earth sea.

well this will be awkward.

I'm going to be a young ~16 year old street urchin with a reputation that far outstrips his deeds.  Not so well intentioned.

I'm thinking Kevothe from The Name of the Wind.

I love the Name of the Wind series. Can't wait to see this archetype in action.

My personality will become more evident over time.

I am concerned to see that we do not, at the moment, have an obvious tank.

In reply to Brennan Otthild (msg # 37):

correct a concern of mine as well.  We do have two other characters who have not yet rolled so we can see what they are.  If not I can try to respec.

Also my entrance scene is going to be some lazy plagiarism ;).

You know James was supposed to be based on Bast from the Name of the Wind... I don't think he held to it as much as I would have liked.

In reply to Player 2 (msg # 38):

I am most certainly not a tank, and it's highly debatable whether I will have combat skills to start.

The more I think about my character concept, the more he's a smarter and somehow less worldly Keef, but instead of lusting to be a hero, he's lusting to be accepted and not reviled for his.. backstory.

I deeply enjoy Name of the Wind. It is one of my favorite books. Go read it. :)

Side note: I can already tell that someone, someday, is going to punch my character directly in his teeth.

Question re: skills- it says 1pt/die. So if I have a 4 mind, and does that mean each point of astrology costs 4 points?

Re: OOC Discussion

In reply to Player 3 (msg # 42):

Each point in a subordinate skill costs 1 point, while each attribute point costs 2 points.

So your 4 Mind would cost 8 points, and adding 4 Astrology would only cost 4, for a total of 12.

It seems like 70 is a lot of points when you get started, but just wait. You'll eventually have to made some tough choices on dice.

A little math suggests that if you ever want to hit a width of 3 with reliability, you'll want to be rolling at least 7 dice. You can only make so many sets of skills that hit 7, y'know? And even rolling the max of 10 dice leaves you failing to make a match of 3 more than half the time.

quote:
Number of d10 Rolled | Probability of a triple
1 | 0
2 | 0
3 | 0.983%
4 | 3.3%
5 | 8.383%
6 | 14.433%
7 | 23.167%
8 | 30.65%
9 | 39.617%
10 | 48%

A match of 2 is much more forgiving, however; you're probably going to get a match of 2 whenever you roll at least 5 dice.

quote:
Number of d10 Rolled | Probability of a pair
1 | 0
2 | 10%
3 | 28%
4 | 49.6%
5 | 69.8%
6 | 84.9%
7 | 94%
8 | 98.2%
9 | 99.6%
10 | 99.9%

Fantastic, thanks!

It should be noted that a 3-wide set is almost never required, though it certainly helps in combat.

After some experiments, I may modify how blocking works to allow more simultaneous actions in melee and get a more medieval back-and-forth feel.

Character generation question:

Is there a penalty for training a new skill when you ding as opposed to character generation?  If I were to not take brawling and rely on my body stat could I train it later?

Also how will progression work?  I know where I want him to go but I am beginning to believe it may be unrealistic.

Jon- Where would you say something like Charm/Charisma exists in this space? I don't really want to go the empathy route (He's decidedly not a people person) or the command route (he's not a leader), but I do view him as being endearingly..precocious? There's something lovable about him, and it's helped him get by.

Re: OOC Discussion

In reply to Player 3 (msg # 47):

There's no difference between skill points now and those earned later.  However, earning advancement is going to be very rare in this game, and will possibly only be tied to in-game activity (i.e. training and other events).  Thus, don't count on it being reliable.

I think that's still empathy... even if you're not a people person, being able to get them to react well to you is still empathy.  As an extreme example, sociopaths are commonly VERY likeable yet they are not people-persons in a sense because it's all done methodically to elicit a response.

Re: OOC Discussion

In reply to GM (msg # 48):

Just so you know I'm pretty firmly empathy/command.  So not sure how you would want to play with that.

Jack of all trades states that you can not have a skill at 5.  Does this apply to the main statistics mind body etc... or just the actual secondary skills?

Also does the limit of 4 count to your core competency i.e. perform for me?
