Re: Chapter 2
In reply to Titus Blackwell (msg # 193):
"Of course it's real, my friend. Just look at him. Bleached leather, staunchly starched robes, the, er, let's call it the toolbelt in polite company, shall we?, and the loyal paladin... it's all on the level," Brennan says, tossing both arrow and apple behind him without a backward glance. "What've I told you about demeaning authority by badging them?"
His admonishing tone quickly becomes explainatory instead of reproachful.
"But then, I've also told you to never be too careful, so what's done is done."
He walks up to Inquisitor and shakes his hand, requited or otherwise.
"The name's Otthild. At-large field agent. I've been tracking one the Dream's more elusive terrors for months, and I fear our friend here has become the subject of an all-too-common misunderstanding. I've seen it many times, of late."
Brennan smiles, then recounts a longer tale of the demon's exploits, appearance, comings/goings/sightings, and so on, complete with details on the several other poor peasants and farmers he'd been forced to extricate from similarly sticky scenarios.
"So, by all means, let's examine the man," Brennan finishes. "But let's do it here, while he's close to home. We'll eventually release him, given that he's not a witch, and the greater kindness is to spare him a troublesome journey heaped on top of the already not inconsequential bother he's been put through."
"Of course, if you're in a hurry, there's no need to trouble yourself. I can handle the investigation myself and write it up nice and proper with the rest of this month's news when I next report in, and you can be on your way. I'd even give you credit where due, for coming all this way to investigate it. Speaks highly of your character, moral fiber, and sense of duty. Worth a commendation, I'd say."
