Chapter 3

In reply to GM (msg # 408):

Heard wolves last night... I hope that Deev, the horses and Bryce are ok... in that order.

Titus says stretching and knuckling his back from a night on the stones.

While the team makes breakfast he does some typical actor's warmup exercises switching accents and identities sliding them on and off.  You've never seen him do this before but you can only assume that it is his pre-show ritual.

I'm Lucas Fairwight of the twin cities.

I'm Lord Fastbender of the cold North...

and so on.

Eventually he claps his hands, checks his daggers, sword and hauberk wrapping it all in his cloak.  He takes one whiff of the material

When we get back to the town I'm going to have to ask one of the women to wash this.

He says after an exaggerated coughing fit.

Chapter 3

In reply to Titus Blackwell (msg # 409):

"Come. Once we get close, we shall imbibe of the cup and bask on in the protection our patroness offers. Then... we shall begin the grim business at hand."

He turns to Enrei and switches to the big man's native tongue.

Chapter 3

In reply to Brennan Otthild (msg # 410):

Titus looks at Brennan his mouth hanging open.

Imbibe of the cup?  Really?  Stop talking like some Galeenium legend.

He looks up at the sky.

Today is as good a day as any to die.

Enrei nods to Brennan's statements in his native tongue, but does not give any other response.  Instead he looks at Titus, "Is never good to die," he observes simply.

Chapter 3

In reply to Enrei Omal'i (msg # 412):

"Don't worry. I don't plan to replace you as the group's storyteller."

Brennan sighs, checks his bow and arrows, arranges them neatly, and begins heading up the rest of the way to the witches' home.

When they are about 10 minutes out, he will stop and allow all to sip from the cup.

In reply to Brennan Otthild (msg # 413):

The summit is not overly large, so you are able to make it to the thin cliffside trail that leads to the witches' cave very quickly.

OOC:  Anyone who wishes to drink from the cup may do so, any other preparations to be made?  It sounds like Titus has his armor on and is ready to dance.

Enrei takes a drink from the cup when offered and enters the cave bare handed, so as to appropriately intimidate any giant snakes they may encounter.

Chapter 3

In reply to Enrei Omal'i (msg # 416):

Titus has armor on, his sword strapped to his hip and bandolier of daggers... all under his cloak.  So his usual armed to the teeth and fairly concealed he doesn't carry any weapon outwardly.  He will drink from the cup and lead the group into the cave.

Chapter 3

In reply to Titus Blackwell (msg # 417):

The Summit

OOC:  if you didn't already, recover Echo for sleeping.

You pause in the dawn's early light to sip from the chalice, which you notice has become darkened, hard and feels almost brittle.  Still, the now familiar wave of calm and comfort washes over you and you feel invigorated.

OOC: I have removed some minor wounds from your sheets.  Any additional effects are not evident at this point.

Thus prepared, you start off toward the cave.  You have not gone far when the silence is broken by a loud hiss from the underbrush.  You leap backward as the enormous dark snake explodes from the grasses to loom over you, its skin darker even than the shadows in which it hid.

It stands poised for a moment, jaw gaping and white teeth gleaming, then retreats and slithers slowly away, looking back at you from time to time indicating you should follow.

Once again you carefully navigate the sandy ledge that wraps around some of the more sheer cliffs and soon the cave is in sight.

As before, a pair of ragged figures stand vigil.  They leer at you horribly with empty eyes and their visage makes you wish the sun were not rising that you might be spared their sight.

Still, though they mouth soundlessly and reach for you with withered fingers, they do not impede you.

The snake slips into the darkness of the cave.

Chapter 3

Enrei charges after the snake on sight, leaving the others to run after him or risk losing them both, and forcing the serpent to lead quickly or be overtaken.  On another day he may have spared a moment to address the husks at the door, but when they fail to bar his passage the islander simply runs past them, intent on catching his monster.

The Cave

Enrei almost immediately runs into an unseen wall (1 shock torso and L. arm).

Reaching out his arms, he is able to feel along and move fairly quickly in a direction.  He gets numerous minor bumps and scrapes but nothing serious.

Titus, soon after, runs into Enrei's back.  Again, no serious damage done.

Cave Entrance

The emaciated demons continue to gape and sway.

Chapter 3

In reply to Titus Blackwell (msg # 426):

The Cave

Together, you bump and fumble your way through the cave, all the while aware with every raspy echo that a giant serpent is never far ahead.

At least you see a glint of light between dark rocks and finally find yourself at the threshold of the large chamber where you met with the witches a few days prior.

Again you smell acrid sickly-sweet mixes of death, sweat and cool earth.  Again you see the hunched figures of the witches around their fire, subtly inhuman in an eerie way.

Light from their coals catches trinkets and brickabrack on the walls, and reflects suddenly off of beady eyes in the shadows.

The snake is nowhere to be seen, but the raspy sound of the witches clearing their throats is nearly as serpentine.

Chapter 3

In reply to Brennan Otthild (msg # 430):

The chamber is roughly oblong and around the size of the keep of the hairy siblings.  The ceiling is dotted with stalactites and so makes movement around the edges of the room where the ceiling is lower very difficult.  This ceiling domes upward, getting to at least two man's heights at its peak.

The walls are a mix of shadow, but here and there are candles and weak lanterns throwing reflections off of a small collection of books, tools, jars and small metal objects hanging off of forked sticks leaning against the walls.

In the center of the room is a wide circle of fitted rocks encompassing a bed of glowing coals.  Atop this are several small pots and pans.

In a raspy voice, one or both of the figures responds:

"A deed is done, so says this man,
all has gone according to plan.
Were we blind or robbed of wit,
we might believe this verbal shit.

A task was set, terms laid out,
now they seek to come about.
Are they thieves or merely fools?
There are costs to breaking rules."
