Chapter 5

In reply to Brennan Otthild (msg # 619):

"There's one more potential problem," Bryce notes slowly, "the archer didn't see the demon.  I didn't either, but I've been around these things long enough to put things together.  Likely he can hide from view, or maybe there's something about you lot that let you see him."

He sits back.

"Inquisition?  More of them?  Well now, that complicates things."

Chapter 5

In reply to GM (msg # 620):

The first customer to the Tavern is Deev, who wanders in with a stern look on his face, clearly a man on a mission.

"I... Titus sent me.  Wants your... wisdom on the demon: how do these bargains work?  Is it the letter or the spirit?  Also... when is the... the BEST time and place to strike?"

Chapter 5

Ciryl doesn't look satisfied at Brennan's declaration that the group is done with Jack still on the run and Titus tied up in it, "And how long until the Inquisition gets here?  If the demon takes a girl every night until then we've done nothing for this town."  As Bryce voices his concern Ciryl simply nods, his dissatisfaction with affairs  evident, "We should at least try to be rid of him, how much time would it take?"

When Deev comes in and passes on Titus's request Ciryl rolls his eyes, "You tell him he's an idiot and if he didn't know how to bargain with a demon he shouldn't have butted in."

Chapter 5

In reply to Ciryl Fontaine (msg # 622):

"It's a contract, Deev," Brennan says. "The words are what matter, not the intent. That's how demons twist such agreements to their purposes. In terms of striking? Well, if you're looking for an exposed underbelly to stab, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed. I told him it was dangerous and the fool did it anyway."

He grimaces, turning to the others.

"The Inquisition has somehow made up significant time. I know not how. We were at least a week ahead of them when we arrived here, thanks in part to the mess they had to unravel in Eastwatch, but now I judge them just a day away, arriving from multiple locations all converging on this point. We shouldn't be here when they arrive."

Brennan's eyes flick across the faces of his allies, then he scowls as an idea occurs to him.

"Ok...if nobody saw Jack but the Chosen, it would appear we require Titus after all. For the good Lord Fastbender has the power to make others see what we have seen. He can conjure an 'appearance' of the demon, make a show of it, parade it before the Masters, the Governor, the populace, everyone. And THEN the powers-that-be will be sufficiently informed to set the Inquisitors upon their task. It's a win/win -- the murders will stop, Jack will be...resolved...and the Inquisition will be delayed."

Brennan smiles slightly.

"We might be able to eke out another win by revealing the location of the body we found before we leave, thus garnering a small reward. I'm of a mind to do that before we depart either way. More closure for her parents, and more evidence for the Inquisition."

He nods at Deev.

"Tell me, where is Titus now?"

"He won't do it," Ciryl says despondently, "He has to keep the demon's secret, I don't see how you could twist words so that making the whole town aware of him wouldn't be a breach of contract."

Chapter 5

In reply to Ciryl Fontaine (msg # 626):

"Demons tend to grossly overestimate their intellect, and to underestimate that of humanity. This is partially our own fault, as the average human seeking to interact with demons is either overconfident, desperate, an idiot, or a mixture of the three."

He shrugs.

"There are exceptions. Unfortunately, Titus has not proven himself to be one of them. Once we find him, we can ask more plainly about exactly what he agreed to, and together we can consider how to bend that word without breaking it."

Brennan pauses, then glances down at the cup at his side for a moment, looking troubled.

"You know, demons ARE capable of breaking their word, when there are no bindings in place to enforce a penalty. Perhaps Titus is bound in similarly loose chains..."

He stands ready to follow Deev to Titus, should the man know and lead the way.

In reply to Brennan Otthild (msg # 629):

The Bank

Titus loiters about the place until the clerks begin to shuffle in for the day.  He slips in through the door, ducks under a guard's arm and slides into a chair at the first desk he comes to.

The female clerk blinks through her spectacles.  "Early bird I see?  What can I do for you?"

OOC: Sliding ahead, the bank is happy to take your money and add you to their accounts.  If you want anything more complicated than that, we can RP it.

Titus smiles breezy making sure that she recognizes him as the foreign southron lordling

I always find its best to conduct business when everyone is fresh.

leans forward conspiratorially and smiles at the teller, bites his lip looking back and forth.

Truth be told... its kind of embarassing... I ended up sleeping under a table on the outskirts of town last night.... woke up with my traveling money gone...

He says the last as if it physically pains him.

So all I'm left with are my large value coins, which can be as good as having no money at all... I was wondering if you would be able to break a few crowns in to suns, chips and some pennies for me.

In reply to Titus Blackwell (msg # 632):

The Bank

She raises one eyebrow so high it threatens to join her hairline.

"I wouldn't presume to ask about your nocturnal activities... my lord."

She quickly assesses the stack of money on the table.

"Certainly, the bank would be more than happy to exchange your coin.  If sire so desires, we can also hold a portion of it in an account... to avoid future mishaps?"

Assuming Titus declines the latter offer, she will summon a lower clerk who spirits away the gold and returns a moment later with an equal value in smaller denominations.  Titus notes that a guard follows the lower clerk all the way to the vault and back, and that the female clerk makes careful note of the value and type of coins exchanged in a ledger.

"We appreciate your visit," she says without looking up from her notes.  "I do hope you have the time to tour our town."

As Titus stands to leave she raises one finger.

"I should note that for such a... large transaction, these notes will be reviewed by the Master of Coin: purely a formality, nothing to be alarmed about.  Also, on a personal note, I recommend you speak with our Master of Arms or his deputy.  Likely he can find the brigands who pilfered your purse."

While Brennan waits, he happens to notice a fat toad hopping along in a nearby alley.  It pauses for the briefest of moments to look in your direction.  Brennan has the distinct sense that the toad is somehow feeling the upmost indifference to his presence, bordering on noncommittal disinterest.

The toad hops away.

Chapter 5

In reply to GM (msg # 637):

Brennan regards the toad for longer than strictly necessary, then closes his eyes as a vision comes to him from another time and place...

quote:
Not far off down the hallway, the battle resumes.

Three already have been slain, the first in a quick and silent attack from the shadows.  Not silent enough, however, as it alerted the enemy to our hero's presence.  The next two died with somewhat less flair, all attempt at stealth abandoned in favor of a showing of raw power.

Now the companions of the dead have rallied.  They are afraid, perhaps, but they put too much stock in their superior numbers to back down.  This is not as our hero had hoped...

A thousand tactics from countless battles near the bog roll through his mind like mirrors down a hill, reflecting countless possibilities for the future though all mere distortions of what is before him.

Grimly, he puts those aside and sets his mind to his purpose.

With a wordless battle-cry, he charges bodily forward. The foes steel themselves in the dark shadows of the soft earthen walls, but are fooled. At the last instant, our hero makes a stunning leap over their lines and smashes at one end of their force from behind.  Having underestimated the vertical dimension, they are caught off guard.

A flash of limb here, a tongue like liquid steel here in the dark, and soon the enemy are falling over themselves to scamper off, leaving our hero victorious.

It may be that they will regroup, it may be that they are routed forever.

None of that matters now. All that matters is that the others may be in trouble, and he may be the only one who can save them. As much as it pains him to help lesser folk, and as much as he would rather chase down the surviving cockroaches and finish them off once and for all, Chubbs realizes it is his place to come to the rescue at any cost.

So resolved, the toad hops along the squishy earth toward the main chamber...

This vision passes quickly, and Brennan opens his eyes.

Curious, he breathes quietly to himself. And somehow troubling.

Chapter 5

In reply to Titus Blackwell (msg # 643):

"We have to go," he says bluntly, as soon as they are away from most prying eyes and ears. "The Inquisition will be here by tomorrow, in force. And that's not necessarily a bad thing, given your present...predicament."

Brennan sighs.

"Having them deal with Jack for us kills two birds with one stone. But nobody's seen the demon but the Chosen. I need you to do Eastwatch all over again. Conjure the image of a demon, make sure people see it, give them something for the Inquisition to chase and track down. That needs to happen shortly, today, in a few hours at most."

He jerks a thumb toward the gates.

"While you're doing that, I'm going to accidentally stumble upon the girl's body, tell the authorities, collect a reward, and get out of here before we're all burned at the stake."

Brennan looks at Titus carefully.

"Losthelm beckons, and I cannot delay any longer. You've stayed one step ahead of the Haunts for this long. You can stay ahead of Jack, as well. If you even still want to. Are you coming or not?"
