Alright, we need to do some tabletalk. Brennan might be a genius but I'm flummoxed and I think we should discuss our options.

We know that there are many girls missing (How Many?), and that the last three at least have vanished within about a week of each other. This could have a ritual significance or not, based on alignment of celestial bodies or maybe just days of the week or something as simple as the people involved have to work during the week and can only ritual/kidnap on weekends. If those even exist in this setting.

We found the body of one girl (You're Sure She's Dead?), who was naked and holding a flower (What Kind?). You put her back where you found here so we can "discover" her again later, and drew a picture, and Deev was there in any case and so could take her form if needed.

Trouble is, aside from trying to use "the girl" to ferret out the kidnappers based on reactions, the best use of Deev mirroring the child is to lead the authorities to the hideout...which we haven't found yet.

Clues include the tattoos found on Keller and his men; the tattoo'd corpse in the Master of Arms's jail cell; the body of the child; the missing or forged Badge; and Keller's patron.

Other clues that may or may not be relevant: Smitty exists, the mold is in the guildmistress's possession, the governor is (and has been) sick, there's a kid who wants explosives from Cyril, and Pika is giving off untrustworthy tells (IMO).

What else do folks have to add to the melting pot o' knowledge?

3 is all the confirmed disappearances, yes. Approximately one per week.

Alignment of celestial bodies is absolutely important for predictions, divination, and allegedly demonic rituals, yes.


The Governor and his Masters (Arms, Coin, Hunt, Guild) wear the badges as do their deputies/clerks or whatever.  The exact number of badges is unknown to Pika, or she claims not to know.

Guildmistress Lady Rayne holds the mold for the badge.  "Smitty" is just Pika's pronounciation of "smithy" or a blacksmith.

You have found one girl you suppose to be one of those missing, though you have not confirmed it per se.  Though Titus is no doctor and did not do an autopsy, he did confirm that she is dead.

Who is in possession of the forged medallion?  Somehow they know that it was forged and why may be relevent.

I'm almost inclined to believe the whole town is in on it, or at least the entire 'ruling' class.  Though I have no evidence to level that accusation.

We could always send Deev/Titus to follow Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum in mud village to see if they lead us anywhere.  Also we could go hunting for more people with tattoos.

The other option that I'm holding for when we hit a dead end is that I could kick the shit out of the hornets nest and whip up a frenzy.  Then we watch who scrambles.

Or Brennan can use his knowledge to attempt to infiltrate the group because they are doing it wrong and he wants to show them how to do it right.  It may be possible to leak some information that will make it so they approach us with an offer of some description.

If we can find the group, there are a lot of options available to us. Lead the authorities there in a way that maintains our innocence (using Deev or some bullshit detective-looking work), infiltrate it, etc. The problem is finding it.

Keller's goons don't know who the patron is. We shook them up pretty well and I believe them there.

The Master of Arms did not give me the badge back after I gave it to him to examine. Which does not come as a surprise. I don't think it incriminates him, particularly since he wanted help with the corpse and wouldn't have shown it to me if he already knew what it was and wanted to keep it quiet.

The Master of the Hunt had no reason to be helpful if he had something to hide, so I don't suspect him either.

I haven't met the guildmistress, but Cyril trusts her...for some reason. I'm torn on that one.

We haven't see the Master of the Coin yet, but there's no obvious motive for him to be doing this. Scared people move away and pay fewer taxes.

Of course we don't know the relationships these people share. Are the Masters appointed? Elected? Is this favoritism or neopotism or mertism or what? How was the governor selected? They don't kneel to the king, so who empowered them?

And let's not forget the governor's room is a pentagram. That might have just been a cute way of describing a room with 5 doors to throw us off but...it might not have been, too.

There's a lot we don't know, honestly. But we've stuck our noses out enough that if somebody with any power wanted to waylay us, they've had ample opportunity by now. We might have to just keep talking to people until they make their move (if they do, that is).

And tonight? Titus should tell the story of that rhyme the governor told and see what happens in a crowded room.

Ciryl was listening to gossip in the market while you were with the master of arms and Titus was digging for bodies.  There was nothing in the air about the Guildmistress other than she does her job keeping the guilds and merchants in line.  It's not so much that I trust her as I'd heard nothing to actually be suspect about.  It's one thing to summon demons because you're bitter and old, or lost a daughter, or something something but as far as I know she's got nothing going on.  Her holding the badge's mold might be worth shaking up, but I didn't know that till now.

As far as the master of coin's motives, Bryce did make a point that money is a great way to get things done.  It's wartime in medievalish noteurope, moving's probably low on people's priorities.  If taxes is a day job and cultism is a passion, scaring people away's probably not his biggest concern.

However, there will have to be a new Keller appointed at some point who will have to know their patron... unless we accidentally'ed the one unreplaceable weak spot in their plan.  So someone should be making a move to contact those two idiots to find out what they said or tie up the loose ends if nothing else.

Also if we go hunting tat's in the mud we may find someone who knows more... we'd be going fishing as it were.

We can always go back to the master at arms and find out how he knew it was a forgery.  If we knew more about the creation or the forgery we may be able to figure out who made the forgery.  We find that and now we have an arm to twist.

So I think our current route is hitting a dead end.  We can wait and try a different tack tomorrow and see if option 4 happens, or we can try to press on.

You are as far from the priest's house as you want to be given 10 minutes lead time.  In that time you can sprint anywhere in the shantytown, or make it back to DuckTown behind the soldiers, or wherever you want to be.

Ducktown has a lake to the west, open land to the north (farms), open land then trees and mountains a mile to the east, and the slums to the south (where I presume you are).

The priest walked around the lake to the west.  Past the lake to the west are the woods he was heading to.

You don't recognize any of the men, you have no idea whether they heard rumors about an inspector, lordling, or anything else.

The sack is tied at the top, or else the flour would get out and bugs would get in.

The sack is really just there to make sure nobody can open the door quickly, it doesn't stop you from opening the door.

That's what the guards are for.

It's only there because the door doesn't lock from the outside.  Ciryl could shove the door open and get out himself if he were allowed to, the sack just means it would take him enough time to do so that the guards could stop him and that he can't slam one of them with the door.

I'm going to be out of the country and unable to post from Sept 8 - Sept 22. I'm...not sure how to play this. Normally I wouldn't have Brennan just go to the Inquisitor's citadel but that might honestly be the best way to move the story forward while I'm gone. Open to any suggestions (and please don't get me killed while I'm gone) :)

I think this is not a great idea, according to Deev I'm not overly convincing as Brennan.  That being said.... Titus is 100% on board with this stupid idea.

It doesn't seem like anyone has any extra information to go on with this, and I'm low on echo so... this is going to be bad.

That being said short of staging the jailbreak scene from Matrix I don't see a way out of this.

We could try to negotiate some kind of police agreement with them but I don't see that going far...

What do you guys think?

I don't think it will work, but I also don't know what else to do besides leave him in jail, which is a bullshit thing to do to a fellow PC who isn't trying to be written out of the game.

If it leads to a TPK, so be it. I still have a couple aces in the hole if shit hits the fan, but they involve demonic pacts that are a terrible idea so...

So we're all agreed this is a dumb plan, let's get to it.

I'm mostly concerned with the fact that I don't know what our next steps realistically are after I'm out.  We still have Titus tied to Jack, no definitive answer to him from the inquisition, and now the inquisitor is very aware of us and has plans of some variety for us as well.

Foe 1: The Inquisitor
- Support from a huge and powerful organization that can track us easily and move quickly
- Technically the legal authority on these matters, so it's real treason to fight him
- No paladin and not physically intimidating, so beatable but...see points 1 and 2...

Foe 2: Springheel Jack
- Can track us easily and move quickly, but only at night
- Can kill humans with one hit, in a blur of motion
- Somewhat tied to the town, and definitely a Bad Guy (tm) doing Bad Things (tm)

Foe 3: The Priest's Cult
- Tied to Springheel Jack, but separate in scope and complexity and perhaps even motivations
- Eyes and ears everywhere

Foe 4: Lord Garr
- Still marching (ostensibly) to deal with the murdered bride thing
- Big army, legal threat to us

ASSETS
- Titus (Out of Mana)
- Deev (Scared and Fragile)
- Bryce (Defected)
- Cyril (Imprisoned)
- Brennan (basically on what's left of a 2-hour parole)

I have no idea what to do.

you guys don't know it yet, but if he rode his horse to death to get here, he's pretty out on a limb and/or desperate. he might be more negotiable as an individual than he wants to let on.

this is the big daddy and in-character Ciryl really wants to put a bow on this.  I feel like we don't have a lot of room to work here aside from getting the inquisitor to yes definitely lend a hand and get this done before more pressing matters happen  he doesn't have to like it, he doesn't have to consider us equals, he doesn't have to trust us, but we need him to work with us instead of against us.

since this one is kinda technically under Titus's thumb at the moment, I have no major fears about it, and no qualms about selling them out to the inquisitor if we can get away with Titus's life and be rid of Jack at the end of the day.


I'm just gonna stamp a big "not my problem" on this one.  it does seem a more long-term issue regardless


we really need to get the inquisitor to be an asset, even if only for the shortest term.  I dunno what kind of leverage we have on him, and I'm not completely against the idea of pulling a fast one on him  when it's done (however well that may or may not work out) but given how we have consistently come up against a wall trying to suss out Jack on our own and with our limited resources we need a definite solution to what I think is the most pressing hangup, that being the magical mystery man with fantastic and terrible powers.  Every other problem is a lot more mundane and manageable.

I agree with Ciryl on this one.  If we can flip him to our side maybe he can come up with someone to help with Spring Heel Jack.  I have an idea sloshing around in my head its a bad one but it may work.

There will be a lot of hand wavey bullshit and I may be visiting my dad, but... y'know....

Basically it would be a 'yeah you got me but here listen to this.'

Also the wandering haunts could always do a thing....
