Chapter 6

In reply to Titus Blackwell (msg # 295):

"The guards and the Inquisitors don't really negotiate. But perhaps if we can get them to leave their post and Chase a fake Cyril, the real one can slip out at his own pace?"

In reply to Brennan Otthild (msg # 296):

You were in the academy right?  What do you know of the inquisition, what type of people are they?  What motivates them?  What sort of training do they receive?

Chapter 6

In reply to Titus Blackwell (msg # 297):

Brennan blinks.

"They're...not really people, once they put on the mask. I don't mean that literally, of course, but that's the job. They separate themselves from their selves to stoically pursue their vision of justice and righteousness. Their main motivation is the expunging of witchcraft, demons, and those who enable them. Their trained in torture, chemistry, biology, deduction, hunting, survival, and demonic interactions."

He shrugs.

"Most of them can fight well enough, if push comes to shove, but combat training isn't really a huge piece of it. That's what the paladins are for."

Brennan stiffens suddenly.

"I have not seen a paladin in this town yet. Have any of you? That is very strange indeed..."

Chapter 6

In reply to Brennan Otthild (msg # 298):

As Ciryl has nothing better to do than sing and evesdrop on his captors, and as the guards have a greater abundance of loyalty than brains, he learns a few things:

The Inquisitor arrived alone around daybreak and immediately went to the Masters and organized them.  The town was already somewhat militarized after the demonic sightings and murders the night before, with the Master of Arms distributing weapons and duties to a number of conscripts.

The Inquisitor arrived by horse, said horse dying of exhaustion almost immediately upon arrival.  According to one guard, the creature was given over to the tanners, but the tanner was afraid to work with it and so let the carcass be taken away for food.

In reply to GM (msg # 299):

How unified is this vision of righteousness?  Is it possible to drive a wedge somewhere or to find some more flexible than others?

...and no I have not seen a paladin in this town.

He beckons over Deev

How much like Brennan do I look?

In reply to Brennan Otthild (msg # 301):

Any crack can be forced open.  When dealing with zealots money is of little use.  However, if ideation is properly framed...

Titus clicks his tongue frustrated at trying to sound smarter than he is.

Damnit.... basically I need to find a way to make it more within their morals to let us go than it is to bring us in.  Any ideas?

Chapter 6

In reply to Titus Blackwell (msg # 304):

"No," Brennan says simply. "No, I do not. But the alternative is to leave Cyril locked up to pay for sins that are not his own."

He sighs.

"If we only had more time, I could summon appropriate aid. If only there was..."

Brennan blinks suddenly.

"...a way. Oh, that's a terrible idea..."

He withdraws a stone from his pocket and curls his fingers around it protectively.

"I do have the power to summon a pair of lesser demons quickly," Brennan says softly. "But I'm loathe to set them upon the guards who are just doing their job even to free Cyril. And I have never been sure of the repercussions of using this particular artifact -- the incantation warns that it works 'at the cost of sleep'. Is it a good idea? No. Would it work? Maybe. Do I like it? No."

Brennan exhales sharply, frustrated with the whole situation.

"I do not know what to do," he admits at last.

Chapter 6

In reply to Brennan Otthild (msg # 305):

Brennan putters around a bit, weighing options aloud and internally before speaking up again.

"Here's what we're going to do. All of this is Plan B. I will, myself, go to the Inquisitor and attempt to convince him to let me help exterminate Jack. If all goes well, that will get Cyril out of jail to help us."

He turns to Titus.

"If you gave Jack a 'present', like the location of the Inquisitor, would he try to attack him at the first opportunity? We need to prove to the Inquisition that Jack is a clear and present danger, and that he should be a priority over us."

He frowns slightly.

"Plan C may involve asking the governor to intercede. Cyril helped him with that cough. Maybe that will count for something. This isn't a rebel town, but neither did it seem friendly to the king. Maybe they don't hold the Inquisition with as high a regard as other towns do..."

In reply to Brennan Otthild (msg # 308):

If you want someone impersonated close up Deev's your guy.  I can be someone else, I can be probably 3 people simultaneously... but someone specific... thats tough.

Titus sighs heavily.

We could let the inquisitor befall a horrible 'accident' I can go get Burk or one of the network...

Up to you can we sweep this under the rug or do we confront it now.  The fact he doesn't have a paladin means he's vulnerable?  Perhaps we turn an enemy to a friend, at least for a time.
In this case, plan A is for you to negotiate to help them.

If I did would they execute me on the spot or take me back to the citadel?

"They just spread those stories to scare you," Brennan assures Deev. "Though they are more skeptical than most, and more likely to know when they are being affected by what they'd term witchcraft than the average person."

He frowns thoughtfully.

"Really, it would be best for Jack to swoop in and take the Inquisitor himself. Then we could intervene and earn brownie points."

You still have to wait for nightfall for that.  What exactly did you and he agree to when you spoke.  Maybe we can find a loophole or if we intrigue him enough to spend the night?

Or... and this is a horrible idea... you go missing until dark then he has to find you.

Chapter 6

In reply to Brennan Otthild (msg # 319):

Well then... it seems our choices are either try to hide until nightfall, arrange for an accident to befall the inquisitor, and jailbreak Ciryl... for the record, he will be pissed... try to strike a new deal with the inquisitor, or attempt to deceive the inquisitor.

I think Ciryl attempted to get him on our side, and either they didn't believe him, or used him as bait... or both. Do you think we stand a better chance?  Should we try to stall until nightfall?

I mean... I could kidnap you..

He says offhand and then gets that look like its not as bad an idea as he first thought.
